Two dimensional gravity waves at low regularity I: Energy estimates

This article represents the first installment of a series of papers concerned with low regularity solutions for the water wave equations in two space dimensions. Our focus here is on sharp cubic energy estimates. Precisely, we introduce and develop the techniques to prove a new class of energy estimates, which we call \emph{balanced cubic estimates}. This yields a key improvement over the earlier cubic estimates of Hunter-Ifrim-Tataru [15], while preserving their scale invariant character and their position-velocity potential holomorphic coordinate formulation. Even without using any Strichartz estimates, these results allow us to significantly lower the Sobolev regularity threshold for local well-posedness, drastically improving earlier results obtained by Alazard-Burq-Zuily [5, 6], Hunter-Ifrim-Tataru [15] and Ai [2].

Local well-posedness for quasilinear problems: a primer

Proving local well-posedness for quasilinear problems in pde's presents a number of difficulties, some of which are universal and others of which are more problem specific. While a common standard, going back to Hadamard, has existed for a long time, there are by now both many variations and many misconceptions in the subject. The aim of these notes is to collect a number of both classical and more recent ideas in this direction, and to assemble them into a cohesive road map that can be then adapted to the reader's problem of choice.

The Benjamin-Ono approximation for 2D gravity water waves with constant vorticity

This article is concerned with infinite depth gravity water waves with constant vorticity in two space dimensions. We consider this system expressed in position-velocity potential holomorphic coordinates. We show that, for low-frequency solutions, the Benjamin-Ono equation gives a good and stable approximation to the system on the natural cubic time scale. The proof relies on refined cubic energy estimates and perturbative analysis.

The relativistic Euler equations with a physical vacuum boundary: Hadamard local well-posedness, rough solutions, and continuation criterion

In this paper we provide a complete local well-posedness theory for the free boundary relativistic Euler equations with a physical vacuum boundary on a Minkowski background. Specifically, we establish the following results: (i) local well-posedness in the Hadamard sense, i.e., local existence, uniqueness, and continuous dependence on the data; (ii) low regularity solutions: our uniqueness result holds at the level of Lipschitz velocity and density, while our rough solutions, obtained as unique limits of smooth solutions, have regularity only a half derivative above scaling; (iii) stability: our uniqueness in fact follows from a more general result, namely, we show that a certain nonlinear functional that tracks the distance between two solutions (in part by measuring the distance between their respective boundaries) is propagated by the flow; (iv) we establish sharp, essentially scale invariant energy estimates for solutions; (v) a sharp continuation criterion, at the level of scaling, showing that solutions can be continued as long as the the velocity is in $L^1_t Lip$ and a suitable weighted version of the density is at the same regularity level. Our entire approach is in Eulerian coordinates and relies on the functional framework developed in the companion work of the second and third authors corresponding to the non relativistic problem. All our results are valid for a general equation of state $p(\varrho)= \varrho^γ$, $γ> 1$.

Local well-posedness of skew mean curvature flow for small data in $d\geq 4$ dimensions

The skew mean curvature flow is an evolution equation for $d$ dimensional manifolds embedded in $\mathbb{R}^{d+2}$ (or more generally, in a Riemannian manifold). It can be viewed as a Schrödinger analogue of the mean curvature flow, or alternatively as a quasilinear version of the Schrödinger Map equation. In this article, we prove small data local well-posedness in low-regularity Sobolev spaces for the skew mean curvature flow in dimension $d\geq 4$.

Multisolitons for the cubic NLS in 1-d and their stability

For both the cubic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLS) as well as the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation in one space dimension we consider the set ${\bf M}_N$ of pure $N$-soliton states, and their associated multisoliton solutions. We prove that (i) the set ${\bf M}_N$ is a uniformly smooth manifold, and (ii) the ${\bf M}_N$ states are uniformly stable in $H^s$, for each $s>-\frac12$. One main tool in our analysis is an iterated Backlund transform, which allows us to nonlinearly add a multisoliton to an existing soliton free state (the soliton addition map) or alternatively to remove a multisoliton from a multisoliton state (the soliton removal map). The properties and the regularity of these maps are extensively studied.

Finite depth gravity water waves in holomorphic coordinates

In this article we consider irrotational gravity water waves with finite bottom. Our goal is two-fold. First, we represent the equations in holomorphic coordinates and discuss the local well-posedness of the problem in this context. Second, we consider the small data problem and establish cubic lifespan bounds for the solutions. Our results are uniform in the infinite depth limit, and match the earlier infinite depth result of Hunter-Ifrim-Tataru.

Energy dispersed solutions for the (4+1)-dimensional Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equation

This article is devoted to the mass-less energy critical Maxwell-Klein-Gordon system in 4+1 dimensions. In earlier work of the second author, joint with Krieger and Sterbenz, we have proved that this problem has global well-posedness and scattering in the Coulomb gauge for small initial data. This article is the second of a sequence of three papers of the authors, whose goal is to show that the same result holds for data with arbitrarily large energy. Our aim here is to show that large data solutions persist for as long as one has small energy dispersion; hence failure of global well-posedness must be accompanied with a non-trivial energy dispersion.

Global well-posedness and scattering of the (4+1)-dimensional Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equation

This article constitutes the final and main part of a three-paper sequence, whose goal is to prove global well-posedness and scattering of the energy critical Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equation (MKG) on $\mathbb{R}^{1+4}$ for arbitrary finite energy initial data. Using the successively stronger continuation/scattering criteria established in the previous two papers, we carry out a blow-up analysis and deduce that the failure of global well-posedness and scattering implies the existence of a nontrivial stationary or self-similar solution to MKG. Then, by establishing that such solutions do not exist, we complete the proof.

preprint2015arXiv

Local well-posedness of the (4+1)-dimensional Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equation at energy regularity

This paper is the first part of a trilogy dedicated to a proof of global well-posedness and scattering of the (4+1)-dimensional mass-less Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equation (MKG) for any finite energy initial data. The main result of the present paper is a large energy local well-posedness theorem for MKG in the global Coulomb gauge, where the lifespan is bounded from below by the energy concentration scale of the data. Hence the proof of global well-posedness is reduced to establishing non-concentration of energy. To deal with non-local features of MKG we develop initial data excision and gluing techniques at critical regularity, which might be of independent interest.

Global bounds for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in one space dimension

This article is concerned with the small data problem for the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLS) in one space dimension, and short range modifications of it. We provide a new, simpler approach in order to prove that global solutions exist for data which is small in $H^{0,1}$. In the same setting we also discuss the related problems of obtaining a modified scattering expansion for the solution, as well as asymptotic completeness.

Semiclassical Lp estimates

The purpose of this paper is to use semiclassical analysis to unify and generalize Lp estimates on high energy eigenfunctions and spectral clusters. In our approach these estimates do not depend on ellipticity and order, and apply to operators which are selfadjoint only at the principal level. They are estimates on weakly approximate solutions to semiclassical pseudodifferential equations. The revision corrects an exponent in the main theorems.

Two dimensional water waves in holomorphic coordinates

This article is concerned with the infinite depth water wave equation in two space dimensions. We consider this problem expressed in position-velocity potential holomorphic coordinates. Viewing this problem as a quasilinear dispersive equation, we establish two results: (i) local well-posedness in Sobolev spaces, and (ii) almost global solutions for small localized data. Neither of these results are new; they have been recently obtained by Alazard-Burq-Zuily \cite{abz}, respectively by Wu \cite{wu} using different coordinates and methods. Instead our goal is improve the understanding of this problem by providing a single setting for both problems, by proving sharper versions of the above results, as well as presenting new, simpler proofs. This article is self contained.

Low regularity bounds for mKdV

We study the local well-posedness in the Sobolev space H^s for the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation on the real line. Kenig-Ponce-Vega \cite{KPV2} and Christ-Colliander-Tao established that the data-to-solution map fails to be uniformly continuous on a fixed ball in H^s when s<1/4. In spite of this, we establish that for -1/8 < s < 1/4, the solution satisfies global in time H^s(R) bounds which depend only on the time and on the H^s(R) norm of the initial data. This result is weaker than global well-posedness, as we have no control on differences of solutions. Our proof is modeled on recent work by Christ-Colliander-Tao and Koch-Tataru employing a version of Bourgain's Fourier restriction spaces adapted to time intervals whose length depends on the spatial frequency.

Quasilinear Schrödinger equations I: Small data and quadratic interactions

In this article we prove local well-posedness in low-regularity Sobolev spaces for general quasilinear Schrödinger equations. These results represent improvements of the pioneering works by Kenig-Ponce-Vega and Kenig-Ponce-Rolvung-Vega, where viscosity methods were used to prove existence of solutions in very high regularity spaces. Our arguments here are purely dispersive. The function spaces in which we show existence are constructed in ways motivated by the results of Mizohata, Ichinose, Doi, and others, including the authors.

Quasilinear Schrödinger equations II: Small data and cubic nonlinearities

In part I of this project we examined low regularity local well-posedness for generic quasilinear Schrödinger equations with small data. This improved, in the small data regime, the preceding results of Kenig, Ponce, and Vega as well as Kenig, Ponce, Rolvung, and Vega. In the setting of quadratic interactions, the (translation invariant) function spaces which were utilized incorporated an $l^1$ summability over cubes in order to account for Mizohata's integrability condition, which is a necessary condition for the $L^2$ well-posedness for the linearized equation. For cubic interactions, this integrability condition meshes better with the inherent $L^2$ nature of the Schrödinger equation, and such summability is not required. Thus we are able to prove small data well-posedness in $H^s$ spaces.

Price's Law on Nonstationary Spacetimes

In this article we study the pointwise decay properties of solutions to the wave equation on a class of nonstationary asymptotically flat backgrounds in three space dimensions. Under the assumption that uniform energy bounds and a weak form of local energy decay hold forward in time we establish a $t^{-3}$ local uniform decay rate (Price's law \cite{MR0376103}) for linear waves. As a corollary, we also prove Price's law for certain small perturbations of the Kerr metric. This result was previously established by the second author in \cite{Tat} on stationary backgrounds. The present work was motivated by the problem of nonlinear stability of the Kerr/Schwarzschild solutions for the vacuum Einstein equations, which seems to require a more robust approach to proving linear decay estimates.

Energy and local energy bounds for the 1-D cubic NLS equation in H^{-1/4}

We consider the cubic Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation (NLS) in one space dimension, either focusing or defocusing. We prove that the solutions satisfy a-priori local in time Hs bounds in terms of the Hs size of the initial data for s >=-1/4 . This improves earlier results of Christ-Colliander-Tao [2] and of the authors [12]. The new ingredients are a localization in space and local energy decay, which we hope to be of independent interest.

Near soliton evolution for equivariant Schroedinger Maps in two spatial dimensions

We consider the Schrödinger Map equation in $2+1$ dimensions, with values into $§^2$. This admits a lowest energy steady state $Q$, namely the stereographic projection, which extends to a two dimensional family of steady states by scaling and rotation. We prove that $Q$ is unstable in the energy space $\dot H^1$. However, in the process of proving this we also show that within the equivariant class $Q$ is stable in a stronger topology $X \subset \dot H^1$.

Strichartz estimates for partially periodic solutions to Schrödinger equations in 4d and applications

We consider the energy critical nonlinear Schrödinger equation on periodic domains of the form R^m x T^{4-m} with m=0,1,2,3. Assuming that a certain L^4 Strichartz estimate holds for solutions to the corresponding linear Schrödinger equation, we prove that the nonlinear problem is locally well-posed in the energy space. Then we verify that the L^4 estimate holds if m=2,3, leaving open the cases m=0,1.

Wave packet parametrices for evolutions governed by PDO's with rough symbols

In this note, we consider wave packet parametrices for Schrodinger-like evolution equations. Under an integrability condition along the flow, we prove that the flow is then globally well-defined and bilipschitz. Under an additional smallness assumption, we prove that the kernel of the phase space operator decays rapidly away from the graph of the Hamilton flow. This can be used to prove that smoothness is preserved for finite times by the flow of the equation.

A convolution estimate for two-dimensional hypersurfaces

Given three transversal and sufficiently regular hypersurfaces in R^3 it follows from work of Bennett-Carbery-Wright that the convolution of two L^2 functions supported of the first and second hypersurface, respectively, can be restricted to an L^2 function on the third hypersurface, which can be considered as a nonlinear version of the Loomis-Whitney inequality. We generalize this result to a class of C^{1,beta} hypersurfaces in R^3, under scaleable assumptions. The resulting uniform L^2 estimate has applications to nonlinear dispersive equations.

Strichartz estimates on Schwarzschild black hole backgrounds

We study dispersive properties for the wave equation in the Schwarzschild space-time. The first result we obtain is a local energy estimate. This is then used, following the spirit of earlier work of Metcalfe-Tataru, in order to establish global-in-time Strichartz estimates. A considerable part of the paper is devoted to a precise analysis of solutions near the trapping region, namely the photon sphere.
