Conserved energies for the one dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation: low regularity case

We construct a family of conserved energies for the one dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation, but in the low regularity case (in \cite{KL} we have constructed conserved energies in the high regularity situation). This can be done thanks to regularization procedures and a study of the topological structure of the finite-energy space. The asymptotic (regularised conserved) phase change on the real line with values in $ \R/2π\Z$ is studied. We also construct a conserved quantity, the renormalized momentum $H_1$ (see Theorem \ref{thm:E1}), on the universal covering space of the finite-energy space.

Multisolitons for the cubic NLS in 1-d and their stability

For both the cubic Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation (NLS) as well as the modified Korteweg-de Vries (mKdV) equation in one space dimension we consider the set ${\bf M}_N$ of pure $N$-soliton states, and their associated multisoliton solutions. We prove that (i) the set ${\bf M}_N$ is a uniformly smooth manifold, and (ii) the ${\bf M}_N$ states are uniformly stable in $H^s$, for each $s>-\frac12$. One main tool in our analysis is an iterated Backlund transform, which allows us to nonlinearly add a multisoliton to an existing soliton free state (the soliton addition map) or alternatively to remove a multisoliton from a multisoliton state (the soliton removal map). The properties and the regularity of these maps are extensively studied.

Flatness implies smoothness for solutions of the porous medium equation

One of the major problems in the theory of the porous medium equation is the regularity of the solutions and the free boundaries. Here we assume flatness of the solution in space time cylinder and derive smoothness of the interface after a small time, as well as smoothness of the solution in the positivity set and up to the free boundary for some time interval. We use these facts to prove the following eventual regularity result: solutions with compactly supported initial data are smooth after a finite time T that depends on mass and the size of the initial support. This result eliminates the condition of non-degeneracy on the initial data that has been carried on for decades in the literature.

Higher Regularity for the fractional thin obstacle problem

In this article we investigate the higher regularity properties of the regular free boundary in the fractional thin obstacle problem. Relying on a Hodograph-Legendre transform, we show that for smooth or analytic obstacles the regular free boundary is smooth or analytic, respectively. This leads to the analysis of a fully nonlinear, degenerate (sub)elliptic operator which we identify as a (fully nonlinear) perturbation of the fractional Baouendi-Grushin Laplacian. Using its intrinsic geometry and adapted function spaces, we invoke the analytic implicit function theorem to deduce analyticity of the regular free boundary.

The Variable Coefficient Thin Obstacle Problem: Higher Regularity

In this article we continue our investigation of the thin obstacle problem with variable coefficients which was initiated in \cite{KRS14}, \cite{KRSI}. Using a partial Hodograph-Legendre transform and the implicit function theorem, we prove higher order Hölder regularity for the regular free boundary, if the associated coefficients are of the corresponding regularity. For the zero obstacle this yields an improvement of a \emph{full derivative} for the free boundary regularity compared to the regularity of the metric. In the presence of non-zero obstacles or inhomogeneities, we gain \emph{three halves of a derivative} for the free boundary regularity with respect to the regularity of the inhomogeneity. Further we show analyticity of the regular free boundary for analytic metrics. We also discuss the low regularity set-up of $W^{1,p}$ metrics with $p>n+1$ with and without ($L^p$) inhomogeneities. Key new ingredients in our analysis are the introduction of generalized Hölder spaces, which allow to interpret the transformed fully nonlinear, degenerate (sub)elliptic equation as a perturbation of the Baouendi-Grushin operator, various uses of intrinsic geometries associated with appropriate operators, the application of the implicit function theorem to deduce (higher) regularity and the splitting technique from \cite{KRSI}.

The Variable Coefficient Thin Obstacle Problem: Optimal Regularity and Regularity of the Regular Free Boundary

This article deals with the variable coefficient thin obstacle problem in $n+1$ dimensions. We address the regular free boundary regularity, the behavior of the solution close to the free boundary and the optimal regularity of the solution in a low regularity set-up. We first discuss the case of zero obstacle and $W^{1,p}$ metrics with $p\in(n+1,\infty]$. In this framework, we prove the $C^{1,α}$ regularity of the regular free boundary and derive the leading order asymptotic expansion of solutions at regular free boundary points. We further show the optimal $C^{1,\min\{1-\frac{n+1}{p}, \frac{1}{2}\}}$ regularity of solutions. New ingredients include the use of the Reifenberg flatness of the regular free boundary, the construction of an (almost) optimal barrier function and the introduction of an appropriate splitting of the solution. Important insights depend on the consideration of various intrinsic geometric structures. Based on variations of the arguments in \cite{KRS14} and the present article, we then also discuss the case of non-zero and interior thin obstacles. We obtain the optimal regularity of the solutions and the regularity of the regular free boundary for $W^{1,p}$ metrics and $W^{2,p}$ obstacles with $p\in (2(n+1),\infty]$.

Bounded compositions on scaling invariant Besov spaces

For $0 < s < 1 < q < \infty$, we characterize the homeomorphisms $φ: \real^n \to \real^n$ for which the composition operator $f \mapsto f \circ φ$ is bounded on the homogeneous, scaling invariant Besov space $\dot{B}^s_{n/s,q}(\real^n)$, where the emphasis is on the case $q\not=n/s$, left open in the previous literature. We also establish an analogous result for Besov-type function spaces on a wide class of metric measure spaces as well, and make some new remarks considering the scaling invariant Triebel-Lizorkin spaces $\dot{F}^s_{n/s,q}(\real^n)$ with $0 < s < 1$ and $0 < q \leq \infty$.

Doubling inequalities for the Lamé system with rough coefficients

In this paper we study the local behavior of a solution to the Lamé system when the Lamé coefficients $λ$ and $μ$ satisfy that $μ$ is Lipschitz and $λ$ is essentially bounded in dimension $n\ge 2$. One of the main results is the \emph{local} doubling inequality for the solution of the Lamé system. This is a quantitative estimate of the strong unique continuation property. Our proof relies on Carleman estimates with carefully chosen weights. Furthermore, we also prove the \emph{global} doubling inequality, which is useful in some inverse problems.

Higher regularity of the free boundary in the elliptic Signorini problem

In this paper we study the higher regularity of the free boundary for the elliptic Signorini problem. By using a partial hodograph-Legendre transformation we show that the regular part of the free boundary is real analytic. The first complication in the study is the invertibility of the hodograph transform (which is only $C^{0,1/2}$) which can be overcome by studying the precise asymptotic behavior of the solutions near regular free boundary points. The second and main complication in the study is that the equation satisfied by the Legendre transform is degenerate. However, the equation has a subelliptic structure and can be viewed as a perturbation of the Baouendi-Grushin operator. By using the $L^p$ theory available for that operator, we can bootstrap the regularity of the Legendre transform up to real analyticity, which imples the real analyticity of the free boundary.

The Variable Coefficient Thin Obstacle Problem: Carleman Inequalities

In this article we present a new strategy of addressing the (variable coefficient) thin obstacle problem. Our approach is based on a (variable coefficient) Carleman estimate. This yields semi-continuity of the vanishing order, lower and uniform upper growth bounds of solutions and sufficient compactness properties in order to carry out a blow-up procedure. Moreover, the Carleman estimate implies the existence of homogeneous blow-up limits along certain sequences and ultimately leads to an almost optimal regularity statement. As it is a very robust tool, it allows us to consider the problem in the setting of Sobolev metrics, i.e. the coefficients are only $W^{1,p}$ regular for some $p>n+1$. These results provide the basis for our further analysis of the free boundary, the optimal ($C^{1,1/2}$-) regularity of solutions and a first order asymptotic expansion of solutions at the regular free boundary which is carried out in a follow-up article in the framework of $W^{1,p}$, $p>2(n+1)$, regular coefficients.

Convolution Estimates for Singular Measures and Some Global Nonlinear Brascamp-Lieb Inequalities

We give a $L^2\times L^2 \rightarrow L^2$ convolution estimate for singular measures supported on transversal hypersurfaces in $\mathbb{R}^n$, which improves earlier results of Bejenaru, Herr & Tataru as well as Bejenaru & Herr. The arising quantities are relevant in the study of the validity of bilinear estimates for dispersive partial differential equations. We also prove a class of global, nonlinear Brascamp-Lieb inequalities with explicit constants in the same spirit.

Semiclassical Lp estimates

The purpose of this paper is to use semiclassical analysis to unify and generalize Lp estimates on high energy eigenfunctions and spectral clusters. In our approach these estimates do not depend on ellipticity and order, and apply to operators which are selfadjoint only at the principal level. They are estimates on weakly approximate solutions to semiclassical pseudodifferential equations. The revision corrects an exponent in the main theorems.

On the spectral density function of the Laplacian of a graph

Let X be a finite graph. Let E be the number of its edges and d be its degree. Denote by F_1(X) its first spectral density function which counts the number of eigenvalues less or equal to lambda^2 of the associated Laplace operator. We prove the estimate F_1(X)(lambda) - F_1(X)(0) le 2 cdot E cdot d cdot lambda for 0 le lambda < 1. We explain how this gives evidence for conjectures about approximating Fuglede-Kadison determinants and L^2-torsion.

Higher order time asymptotics of fast diffusion in euclidean space: a dynamical systems approach

This paper quantifies the speed of convergence and higher- order asymptotics of fast diffusion dynamics on R^n to the Barenblatt (self similar) solution. Degeneracies in the parabolicity of this equation are cured by re-expressing the dynamics on a manifold with a cylindrical end, called the cigar. The nonlinear evolution becomes differentiable in Hoelder spaces on the cigar. The linearization of the dynamics is given by the Laplace-Beltrami operator plus a transport term (which can be suppressed by introducing appropriate weights into the function space norm), plus a finite-depth potential well with a universal profile. In the limiting case of the (linear) heat equation, the depth diverges, the number of eigenstates increases without bound, and the continuous spectrum recedes to infinity. We provide a detailed study of the linear and nonlinear problems in Hoelder spaces on the cigar, including a sharp boundedness estimate for the semi-group, and use this as a tool to obtain sharp convergence results toward the Barenblatt solution, and higher order asymptotics. In finer convergence results (after modding out symmetries of the problem), a subtle interplay between convergence rates and tail behavior is revealed. The difficulties involved in choosing the right functional spaces in which to carry out the analysis can be interpreted as genuine features of the equation rather than mere annoying technicalities.

The Korteweg-de-Vries equation at H^{-1} regularity

In this paper we will prove the existence of weak solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries initial value problem on the real line with H^{-1} initial data; moreover, we will study the problem of orbital and asymptotic H^{s} stability of solitons for integers s\ge -1; finally, we will also prove new a priori H^{-1} bounds for solutions to the Korteweg-de Vries equation. The paper will utilise the Miura transformation to link the Korteweg-de Vries equation to the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation.

Geometric flows with rough initial data

We show the existence of a global unique and analytic solution for the mean curvature flow, the surface diffusion flow and the Willmore flow of entire graphs for Lipschitz initial data with small Lipschitz norm. We also show the existence of a global unique and analytic solution to the Ricci-DeTurck flow on euclidean space for bounded initial metrics which are close to the euclidean metric in $L^\infty$ and to the harmonic map flow for initial maps whose image is contained in a small geodesic ball.

Energy and local energy bounds for the 1-D cubic NLS equation in H^{-1/4}

We consider the cubic Nonlinear Schroedinger Equation (NLS) in one space dimension, either focusing or defocusing. We prove that the solutions satisfy a-priori local in time Hs bounds in terms of the Hs size of the initial data for s >=-1/4 . This improves earlier results of Christ-Colliander-Tao [2] and of the authors [12]. The new ingredients are a localization in space and local energy decay, which we hope to be of independent interest.

Small data scattering and soliton stability in $\dot{H}^{-\frac16}$ for the quartic KdV Equation

In this note we prove scattering for perturbations of solitons in the scaling space appropriate for the quartic nonlinearity, namely $\dot{H}^{-\frac16}$. The article relies strongly on refined estimates for a KdV equation linearized at the soliton. In contrast to the work of Tao (2006), we are able to work purely in the scaling space without additional regularity assumptions, allowing us to prove some results on the existence of inverse wave operators.

Well-posedness and scattering for the KP-II equation in a critical space

The Cauchy problem for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili-II equation (u_t+u_{xxx}+uu_x)_x+u_{yy}=0 is considered. A small data global well-posedness and scattering result in the scale invariant, non-isotropic, homogeneous Sobolev space \dot H^{-1/2,0}(R^2) is derived. Additionally, it is proved that for arbitrarily large initial data the Cauchy problem is locally well-posed in the homogeneous space \dot H^{-1/2,0}(R^2) and in the inhomogeneous space H^{-1/2,0}(R^2), respectively.
