Chiral-anomaly-driven magnetotransport in the correlated Weyl magnet Mn$_3$Sn

The quest for topological states in strongly correlated materials is challenging but essential from fundamental research and application perspectives. The magnetic Weyl semimetal (WSM) state in the chiral antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn emerges with strong electronic correlations, offering an intriguing arena for exploring the interplay between Weyl fermions and correlation physics. One prominent characteristic of the WSM state is the chiral anomaly, yet the potential effects of electronic correlations on the chiral anomaly remain unexplored. Here, we report a comprehensive study of the in-plane magnetotransport properties of single-crystal Mn$_{3+x}$Sn$_{1-x}$ with three different Mn doping levels ($x=0.053$, 0.070, and 0.090). The excess Mn leads to glassy ferromagnetic behavior and the Kondo effect, aside from shifting the chemical potential relative to the Weyl nodes. Thus, systematic tuning of the Mn doping level enables us to study the interplay between the spin-fluctuation scatterings, the correlation effect, and the chiral anomaly. We identify negative longitudinal magnetoresistance and planar Hall effect specific to the chiral anomaly for all three doping levels, indicating that the chiral anomaly persists in the presence of strong correlations.

Magnetic field tuning of the valley population in the Weyl phase of Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$

The frustrated magnet Nd$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, where strong correlations together with spin-orbit coupling play a crucial role, is predicted to be a Weyl semimetal and to host topological pairs of bulk Dirac-like valleys. Here we use an external magnetic field to manipulate the localized rare earth 4f moments coupled to the 5d electronic bands. Low energy optical spectroscopy reveals that a field of only a few teslas suffices to create charge compensating pockets of holes and electrons in different regions of momentum space, thus introducing a valley population shift that can be tuned with the field.

Phonon thermal Hall effect in a metallic spin ice

It has become common knowledge that phonons can generate thermal Hall effect in a wide variety of materials, although the underlying mechanism is still controversial. We study longitudinal $κ_{xx}$ and transverse $κ_{xy}$ thermal conductivity in Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$, which is a metallic analogue of spin ice. Despite the presence of mobile charge carriers, we find that both $κ_{xx}$ and $κ_{xy}$ are dominated by phonons. A $T/H$ scaling of $κ_{xx}$ unambiguously reveals that longitudinal heat current is substantially impeded by resonant scattering of phonons on paramagnetic spins. Upon cooling, the resonant scattering is strongly affected by a development of spin ice correlation and $κ_{xx}$ deviates from the scaling in an anisotropic way with respect to field directions. Strikingly, a set of the $κ_{xx}$ and $κ_{xy}$ data clearly shows that $κ_{xy}$ correlates with $κ_{xx}$ in its response to magnetic field including a success of the $T/H$ scaling and its failure at low temperature. This remarkable correlation provides solid evidence that an indispensable role is played by spin-phonon scattering not only for hindering the longitudinal heat conduction, but also for generating the transverse response.

Phonon spectrum of Pr$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ and Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ as an evidence of coupling of the lattice with electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom

Magnetic materials with pyrochlore crystal structure form exotic magnetic states due to the high lattice frustration. In this work we follow the effects of coupling of the lattice and electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom in two Praseodymium-based pyrochlores Pr$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ and Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. In both materials the presence of magnetic interactions does not lead to magnetically ordered low temperature states, however their electronic properties are different. A comparison of Raman phonon spectra of Pr$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ and Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$ allows us to identify magneto-elastic coupling in Pr$_2$Zr$_2$O$_7$ that elucidates its magnetic properties at intermediate temperatures, and allows us to characterize phonon-electron coupling in the semimetallic Pr$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. We also show that the effects of random disorder on the Raman phonon spectra is small.

A new stress dilatometer and measurement of the thermal expansion under uniaxial stress of Mn$_3$Sn

We present a method for measuring thermal expansion under tunable uniaxial stresses, and show measurements of the thermal expansion of Mn$_3$Sn, a room temperature antiferromagnet that exhibits a spontaneous Hall effect, under uniaxial stresses of up to 1.51 GPa compression. Measurement of thermal expansion provides thermodynamic data about the nature of phase transitions, and uniaxial stress provides a powerful tuning method that does not introduce disorder. Mn$_3$Sn exhibits an anomaly in its thermal expansion near $\sim$270 K, associated with a first-order change in its magnetic structure. We show this transition temperature is suppressed by 54.6 K by 1.51 GPa compression along [0001]. We find the associated entropy change at the transition to be $\sim$ 0.1 J mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-1}$ and to vary only weakly with applied stress.

Anomalous transport due to Weyl fermions in the chiral antiferromagnets Mn$_3$$X$, $X$ = Sn, Ge

The recent discoveries of strikingly large zero-field Hall and Nernst effects in antiferromagnets Mn$_3$$X$, ($X$ = Sn, Ge) have brought the study of magnetic topological states to the forefront of condensed matter research and technological innovation. These effects are considered fingerprints of Weyl nodes residing near the Fermi energy, promoting Mn$_3$$X$, ($X$ = Sn, Ge) as a fascinating platform to explore the elusive magnetic Weyl fermions. In this review, we provide recent updates on the insights drawn from experimental and theoretical studies of Mn$_3$$X$, ($X$ = Sn, Ge) by combining previous reports with our new, comprehensive set of transport measurements of high-quality Mn$_3$Sn and Mn$_3$Ge single crystals. In particular, we report magnetotransport signatures specific to chiral anomalies in Mn$_3$Ge and planar Hall effect in Mn$_3$Sn, which have not yet been found in earlier studies. The results summarized here indicate the essential role of magnetic Weyl fermions in producing the large transverse responses in the absence of magnetization.

Anomalous transverse response of Co$_2$MnGa and universality of the room-temperature $α^A_{ij}/σ^A_{ij}$ ratio across topological magnets

The off-diagonal (electric, thermal and thermoelectric) transport coefficients of a solid can acquire an anomalous component due to the non-trivial topology of the Bloch waves. We present a study of the anomalous Hall (AHE), Nernst (ANE) and thermal Hall effects (ATHE) in the Heusler Weyl ferromagnet Co$_2$MnGa. The Anomalous Wiedemann-Franz law, linking electric and thermal responses, was found to be valid over the whole temperature window. This indicates that the AHE has an intrinsic origin and the Berry spectrum is smooth in the immediate vicinity of the Fermi level. From the ANE data, we extract the magnitude and temperature dependence of $α^A_{ij}$ and put under scrutiny the $α^A_{ij}/σ^A_{ij}$ ratio, which approaches k$_B$/e at room temperature. We show that in various topological magnets the room-temperature magnitude of this ratio is a sizeable fraction of k$_B$/e and argue that the two anomalous transverse coefficients depend on universal constants, the Berry curvature averaged over a window set by either the Fermi wavelength (for Hall) or the de Broglie thermal length (for Nernst). Since the ratio of the latter two is close to unity at room temperature, such a universal scaling finds a natural explanation in the intrinsic picture of anomalous transverse coefficients.

Electrical Manipulation of a Topological Antiferromagnetic State

Electrical manipulation of emergent phenomena due to nontrivial band topology is a key to realize next-generation technology using topological protection. A Weyl semimetal is a three-dimensional gapless system that hosts Weyl fermions as low-energy quasiparticles. It exhibits various exotic phenomena such as large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) and chiral anomaly, which have robust properties due to the topologically protected Weyl nodes. To manipulate such phenomena, the magnetic version of Weyl semimetals would be useful as a magnetic texture may provide a handle for controlling the locations of Weyl nodes in the Brillouin zone. Moreover, given the prospects of antiferromagnetic (AF) spintronics for realizing high-density devices with ultrafast operation, it would be ideal if one could electrically manipulate an AF Weyl metal. However, no report has appeared on the electrical manipulation of a Weyl metal. Here we demonstrate the electrical switching of a topological AF state and its detection by AHE at room temperature. In particular, we employ a polycrystalline thin film of the AF Weyl metal Mn$_3$Sn, which exhibits zero-field AHE. Using the bilayer device of Mn$_3$Sn and nonmagnetic metals (NMs), we find that an electrical current density of $\sim 10^{10}$-$10^{11}$ A/m$^2$ in NMs induces the magnetic switching with a large change in Hall voltage, and besides, the current polarity along a bias field and the sign of the spin Hall angle $θ_{\rm SH}$ of NMs [Pt ($θ_{\rm SH} > 0$), Cu($θ_{\rm SH} \sim 0$), W ($θ_{\rm SH} < 0$)] determines the sign of the Hall voltage. Notably, the electrical switching in the antiferromagnet is made using the same protocol as the one used for ferromagnetic metals. Our observation may well lead to another leap in science and technology for topological magnetism and AF spintronics.

Field-Orientation Effect on Ferro-Quadrupole Order in PrTi2Al20

Ferro-quadrupole (FQ) order in the non-Kramers $Γ_3$ doublet system PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ has been investigated via angle-resolved measurements of the specific heat, rotational magnetocaloric effect, and entropy, under a rotating magnetic field within the $(1\bar{1}0)$ plane. The FQ transition occurring at 2 K is robust when the magnetic field $B$ is applied precisely along the $[111]$ direction. By contrast, the magnetic field of larger than 1 T tilted away from the $[111]$ direction sensitively changes the FQ transition to a crossover. The energy gap between the ground and first-excited states in the FQ order increases remarkably with the magnetic field in $B \parallel [001]$, but hardly depends on the magnetic-field strength, at least up to 5 T, in the field orientation between the $[111]$ and $[110]$ axes. These features can be reproduced by using a phenomenological model for FQ order assuming an anisotropic field-dependent interaction between quadrupoles, which has been recently proposed to explain the field-induced first-order phase transition in PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$. The present study demonstrates the great potential of the field-angle-resolved measurements for evaluating possible scenarios for multipole orders.

Many-body Resonance in a Correlated Topological Kagome Antiferromagnet

We use scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy (STM/S) to elucidate the atomically resolved electronic structure in strongly correlated topological kagome magnet Mn$_3$Sn. In stark contrast to its broad single-particle electronic structure, we observe a pronounced resonance with a Fano line shape at the Fermi level resembling the many-body Kondo resonance. We find that this resonance does not arise from the step edges or atomic impurities, but the intrinsic kagome lattice. Moreover, the resonance is robust against the perturbation of a vector magnetic field, but broadens substantially with increasing temperature, signaling strongly interacting physics. We show that this resonance can be understood as the result of geometrical frustration and strong correlation based on the kagome lattice Hubbard model. Our results point to the emergent many-body resonance behavior in a topological kagome magnet.

Room-Temperature Terahertz Anomalous Hall Effect in Weyl Antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn Thin Films

Antiferromagnetic spin motion at terahertz (THz) frequencies attracts growing interests for fast spintronics, however their smaller responses to external field inhibit device application. Recently the noncollinear antiferromagnet Mn$_3$Sn, a Weyl semimetal candidate, was reported to show large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) at room temperature comparable to ferromagnets. Dynamical aspect of such large responses is an important issue to be clarified for future THz data processing. Here the THz anomalous Hall conductivity in Mn$_3$Sn thin films is investigated by polarization-resolved spectroscopy. Large anomalous Hall conductivity Re $σ_{xy} (ω) \sim$ 20 $\rm{Ω^{-1} cm^{-1}}$ at THz frequencies is clearly observed as polarization rotation. In contrast, Im $σ_{xy} (ω)$ is small up to a few THz, showing that the AHE remains dissipationless over a large frequency range. A peculiar temperature dependence corresponding to the breaking/recovery of symmetry in the spin texture is also discussed. Observation of the THz AHE at room temperature demonstrates the ultrafast readout for the antiferromagnetic spintronics using Mn$_3$Sn and will also open new avenue for studying nonequilibrium dynamics in Weyl antiferromagnets.

Strong in-plane anisotropy in the electronic structure of fixed-valence $β$-LuAlB$_4$

The origin of intrinsic quantum criticality in the heavy-fermion superconductor $β$-YbAlB$_4$ has been attributed to strong Yb valence fluctuations and its peculiar crystal structure. Here, we assess these contributions individually by studying the isostructural but fixed-valence compound $β$-LuAlB$_4$. Quantum oscillation measurements and DFT calculations reveal a Fermi surface markedly different from that of $β$-YbAlB$_4$, consistent with a `large' Fermi surface there. We also find an unexpected in-plane anisotropy of the electronic structure, in contrast to the isotropic Kondo hybridization in $β$-YbAlB$_4$.

Quantum critical behaviour and Lifshitz transition in intermediate valence $α$-YbAlB$_4$

Intermetallic compounds containing $f$-electron elements have been prototypical materials for investigating strong electron correlations and quantum criticality (QC). Their heavy fermion ground state evoked by the magnetic $f$-electrons is susceptible to the onset of quantum phases, such as magnetism or superconductivity, due to the enhanced effective mass ($m^{*}$) and a corresponding decrease of the Fermi temperature. However, the presence of $f$-electron valence fluctuations to a non-magnetic state is regarded an anathema to QC, as it usually generates a paramagnetic Fermi-liquid state with quasiparticles of moderate $m^{*}$. Such systems are typically isotropic, with a characteristic energy scale $T_0$ of the order of hundreds of kelvins that require large magnetic fields or pressures to promote a valence or magnetic instability. Here we show that the intermediate valence compound $α$-YbAlB$_4$ surprisingly exhibits both quantum critical behaviour and a Lifshitz transition under low magnetic field, which is attributed to the anisotropy of the hybridization between the conduction and localized $f$-electrons. These findings suggest a new route to bypass the large valence energy scale in developing the QC.

Unveiling Quadrupolar Kondo Effect in the Heavy Fermion Superconductor PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$

Heavy fermion metals hosting multipolar local moments set a new stage for exploring exotic spin-orbital entangled quantum phases. In such systems, the quadrupolar Kondo effect serves as the key ingredient in the orbital-driven non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior and quantum critical phenomena. The cubic heavy fermion superconductor Pr$Tr_2$Al$_{20}$ ($Tr$: Ti, V) is a prime candidate for realizing the quadrupolar Kondo lattice. Here, we present a systematic study of the NFL phenomena in PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$ based on magnetoresistance (MR), magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. Upon entering the NFL regime, we observe a universal scaling behavior expected for the quadrupolar Kondo lattice in PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$, which indicates a prominent role of the quadrupolar Kondo effect in driving the NFL behavior. Deviations from this scaling relation occur below $\sim 8$ K, accompanied by a sign change in the MR and a power-law divergence in the specific heat. This anomalous low-temperature state points to the presence of other mechanisms which are not included in the theory, such as heavy fermion coherence or multipolar quantum critical fluctuations.

Giant Anomalous Hall Effect in the Chiral Antiferromagnet Mn3Ge

The external field control of antiferromagnetism is a significant subject both for basic science and technological applications. As a useful macroscopic response to detect magnetic states, the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) is known for ferromagnets, but it has never been observed in antiferromagnets until the recent discovery in Mn3Sn. Here we report another example of the AHE in a related antiferromagnet, namely, in the hexagonal chiral antiferromagnet Mn3Ge. Our single-crystal study reveals that Mn3Ge exhibits a giant anomalous Hall conductivity $|σ_{xz}|$ ~ 60 per ohm per cm at room temperature and approximately 380 per ohm per cm at 5 K in zero field, reaching nearly half of the value expected for the quantum Hall effect per atomic layer with Chern number of unity. Our detailed analyses on the anisotropic Hall conductivity indicate that in comparison with the in-plane-field components $|σ_{xz}|$ and $|σ_{zy}|$, which are very large and nearly comparable in size, we find $|σ_{yx}|$ obtained in the field along the c axis is found to be much smaller. The anomalous Hall effect shows a sign reversal with the rotation of a small magnetic field less than 0.1 T. The soft response of the AHE to magnetic field should be useful for applications, for example, to develop switching and memory devices based on antiferromagnets.

NMR Observation of Ferro-quadrupole Order in PrTi2Al20

We report the results of 27Al-NMR measurements on a single crystal of PrTi2Al20. This compound shows a phase transition near 2 K associated with the quadrupole degree of freedom of Pr ions, for which the ground state of the crystalline electric field is a nonmagnetic doublet. When a magnetic field is applied along the <111> direction, the NMR lines split upon entering the low-temperature phase, indicating the breaking of the three fold rotation symmetry due to the field-induced magnetic dipole perpendicular to the field. This provides microscopic evidence for a ferro order of the O20 quadrupole. Although a first-order transition is expected theoretically, the line splitting evolves continuously within the experimental resolution.

Pressure-induced magnetic transition exceeding 30 K in the Yb-based heavy fermion superconductor $β$-YbAlB$_4$

Measurements of the electric resistivity $ρ(T)$ under pressure up to 8 GPa were performed on high-quality single-crystals of the Yb-based heavy fermion system $β$-YbAlB$_4$ in the temperature range $2<T<$ 300 K. In the resistivity data, we observed pressure-induced magnetic ordering above the critical pressure $P_{\rm c} \sim$ 2 GPa. Clear difference in the phase diagram under pressure using two types of pressure mediums indicates that the transition temperature may be further enhanced under application of uniaxial pressure. With pressure, this phase transition temperature $T_{\rm M}$ is enhanced reaching 32 K at 8 GPa, which is the highest transition temperature so far recorded for the Yb-based heavy fermion compounds. The power-law exponent $α$ in $ρ=ρ_0+ AT^α$ below $T_{\rm M}$ gradually changes from 3/2 to 5/2 with increasing pressure from 2 to 8 GPa. In contrast, the resistivity exhibits a $T$-linear behavior in the temperature range 2 $\le T \le$ 20 K and is insensitive to pressure below $P_{\rm c}$. In this pressure regime, the magnetization is also nearly independent of pressure and shows no anomaly above 2 K. Our results indicate that a quantum critical point for $β$-YbAlB$_4$ is also located near $P_{\rm c}$ in addition to the strange metal region near the ambient pressure.

High Pressure Measurements of the Resistivity of $β$-YbAlB$_4$

The electric resistivity $ρ(T)$ under hydrostatic pressure up to 8 GPa was measured above 2 K using a high-quality single crystal of the Yb-based heavy fermion system $β$-YbAlB$_4$. We found pressure-induced magnetic ordering above the critical pressure $P_{\rm c} \approx $ 2.4 GPa. This phase transition temperature $T_M$ is enhanced with pressure and reaches 30 K at a pressure of 8 GPa, which is the highest transition temperature for the Yb-based heavy fermion compounds. In contrast, the resistivity is insensitive to pressure below $P_c$ and exhibits the $T$-linear behavior in the temperature range between 2 and 20 K. Our results indicate that quantum criticality for $β$-YbAlB$_4$ is also located near $P_{\rm c}$ in addition to the ambient pressure.

Observation of the orbital quantum dynamics in the spin-1/2 hexagonal antiferromagnet Ba3CuSb2O9

We explore orbital dynamics in the spin liquid candidate Ba3CuSb2O9 using multi-frequency electron spin resonance. We prepared two high quality single crystals. The crystal with a slight copper deficiency shows a structural phase transition at around 200 K due to the cooperative Jahn-Teller effect, accompanied with orbital ordering. In contrast, the crystal with almost perfect stoichiometry shows no orbital ordering down to the lowest temperature of 1.5 K. Dramatic change in the g-factor anisotropy as a function of frequency and temperature demonstrates orbital quantum fluctuations at a nearly constant time scale of ~ 100 ps below 20 K, evidencing the emergence of an orbital liquid state in this quantum spin liquid compound.

Optical evidence for a Weyl semimetal state in pyrochlore Eu2Ir2O7

A Weyl semimetallic state with pairs of nondegenerate Dirac cones in three dimensions was recently predicted to occur in the antiferromagnetic state of the pyrochlore iridates. Here, we show that the THz optical conductivity and temperature dependence of free carriers in the pyrochlore Eu2Ir2O7 match the predictions for a Weyl semimetal and suggest novel Dirac liquid behavior. The interband optical conductivity vanishes continuously at low frequencies signifying a semimetal. The metal-insulator transition at T_N = 110 K is manifested in the Drude spectral weight, which is independent of temperature in the metallic phase, and which decreases smoothly in the ordered phase. The temperature dependence of the free carrier weight below T_N is in good agreement with theoretical predictions for a Dirac material. The data yield a Fermi velocity v_F=4x10^7 cm/s, a logarithmic renormalization scale Lambda_L=600 K, and require a Fermi temperature of T_F=100 K associated with residual unintentional doping to account for the low temperature optical response and dc resistivity.

Spin Fluctuations from Hertz to Terahertz on a Triangular Lattice

The temporal magnetic correlations of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet NiGa$_2$S$_4$ are examined through thirteen decades ($10^{-13}-1$~sec) using ultra-high-resolution inelastic neutron scattering, muon spin relaxation, AC and nonlinear susceptibility measurements. Unlike the short-ranged {\it spatial} correlations, the temperature dependence of the {\it temporal} correlations show distinct anomalies. The spin fluctuation rate decreases precipitously upon cooling towards $T^{\ast}=8.5$~K, but fluctuations on the microsecond time scale then persist in an anomalous dynamical regime for 4 K $<T\le T^{\ast}$. As this time scale exceeds that of single site dynamics by six orders of magnitude, these fluctuations bear evidence of emergent degrees of freedom within the short-range correlated incommensurate state of NiGa$_2$S$_4$.

Strange metal without magnetic criticality

A fundamental challenge to our current understanding of metals is the frequent observation of qualitative departures from Fermi liquid behavior. The standard view attributes such non-Fermi liquid phenomena to the scattering of electrons off quantum critical fluctuations of an underlying order parameter. While the possibility of non-Fermi liquid behavior isolated from the border of magnetism has long been speculated, no experimental confirmation has been made. Here we report on the observation of a strange metal region in the absence of a magnetic instability in an ultrapure single crystal. In particular, we show that the heavy fermion superconductor $β$-YbAlB$_4$ forms a possible phase with strange metallic behavior across an extensive pressure regime, distinctly separated from a high-pressure magnetic quantum phase transition by a Fermi liquid phase.

Unstable Spin-Ice Order in the Stuffed Metallic Pyrochlore Pr$_{2+x}$Ir$_{2-x}$O$_{7-δ}$

Specific heat, elastic neutron scattering, and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) experiments have been carried out on a well-characterized sample of "stuffed" (Pr-rich) Pr$_{2+x}$Ir$_{2-x}$O$_{7-δ}$. Elastic neutron scattering shows the onset of long-range spin-ice "2-in/2-out" magnetic order at $T_M = 0.93$ K, with an ordered moment of 1.7(1)$μ_\mathrm{B}$/Pr ion at low temperatures. Approximate lower bounds on the correlation length and correlation time in the ordered state are 170 Å and 0.7 ns, respectively. $μ$SR experiments yield an upper bound 2.6(7) mT on the local field $B_\mathrm{loc}^{4f}$ at the muon site, which is nearly two orders of magnitude smaller than the expected dipolar field for long-range spin-ice ordering of 1.7$μ_B$ moments (120--270 mT, depending on muon site). This shortfall is due in part to splitting of the non-Kramers crystal-field ground-state doublets of near-neighbor Pr$^{3+}$ ions by the $μ^+$-induced lattice distortion. For this to be the only effect, however, $\sim$160 Pr moments out to a distance of $\sim$14 Å must be suppressed. An alternative scenario, which is consistent with the observed reduced nuclear hyperfine Schottky anomaly in the specific heat, invokes slow correlated Pr-moment fluctuations in the ordered state that average $B_\mathrm{loc}^{4f}$ on the $μ$SR time scale (${\sim}10^{-7}$ s), but are static on the time scale of the elastic neutron scattering experiments (${\sim}10^{-9}$ s). In this picture the dynamic muon relaxation suggests a Pr$^{3+}$ $4f$ correlation time of a few nanoseconds, which should be observable in a neutron spin echo experiment.

Anisotropic transverse magnetoresistivity in alpha-YbAlB4

We measured the transverse magnetoresistivity of the mixed valence compound $α$-YbAlB$_4$. Two configurations were used where current was applied along [110] direction for both and magnetic field was applied along [-110] and $c$-axis. We found the transverse magnetoresistivity is highly anisotropic. In the weak field below 1 T, it is consistent with stronger $c$-$f$ hybridization in the $ab$ plane which was suggested from the previous zero field resistivity measurements. At the higher field above 3 T, we observed a negative transverse magnetoresistivity for the field applied along the $c$-axis. The temperature dependences of the resistivity measured at several different fields suggest the suppression of the heavy fermion behavior at the characteristic field of $\sim 5.5$ T.

Anomalous specific heat behaviour in the quadrupolar Kondo system PrV2Al20

We have measured the specific heat of PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$ at very low temperatures, using high quality single crystals with the residual resistivity ratio ~ 20. The high-quality single crystals exhibit clear double transitions at $T_{\rm Q} =$ 0.75 K and $T^* =$ 0.65 K. These transitions are clearer and shift to higher temperature in higher quality single crystals. Besides, there was no hysteresis in those transitions in warming and cooling process of the heat capacity measurements. In the ordered state below $T^*$, the specific heat shows a $T^4$ dependence, indicating the gapless mode associated with the quadrupole and/or octupole ordering.

Field-Induced Quadrupolar Quantum Criticality in PrV2Al20

PrV2Al20 is the heavy fermion superconductor based on the cubic Gamma3 doublet that exhibits non- magnetic quadrupolar ordering below ~ 0.6 K. Our magnetotransport study on PrV2Al20 reveals field-induced quadrupolar quantum criticality at Hc ~ 11 T applied along the [111] direction. Near the critical field Hc required to suppress the quadrupolar state, we find a marked enhancement of the resistivity rho(H, T), a divergent effective mass of quasiparticles and concomitant non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior (i.e. rho(T) ~ T^n with n < 0.5). We also observe the Shubnikov de Haas-effect above ?Hc, indicating the enhanced effective mass m/m0 ~ 10. This reveals the competition between the nonmagnetic Kondo effect and the intersite quadrupolar coupling, leading to the pronounced NFL behavior in an extensive region of T and H emerging from the quantum critical point.

Heavy Fermion Superconductivity in the Quadrupole Ordered State of PrV2Al20

PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$ is a rare example of a heavy fermion system based on strong hybridization between conduction electrons and nonmagnetic quadrupolar moments of the cubic $Γ_3$ ground doublet. Here, we report that a high-quality single crystal of PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$ exhibits superconductivity at $T_{\rm c}=$ 50 mK in the antiferroquadrupole-ordered state under ambient pressure. The heavy fermion character of the superconductivity is evident from the specific heat jump of $ΔC/T \sim 0.3$ J/mol K$^2$ and the effective mass $m^*/m_0 \sim 140$ estimated from the temperature dependence of the upper critical field. Furthermore, the high-quality single crystals exhibit double transitions at $T_{\rm Q}$ = 0.75 K and $T^{*}$ = 0.65 K associated with quadrupole and octapole degrees of freedom of the $Γ_3$ doublet. In the ordered state, the specific heat $C/T$ shows a $T^3$ dependence, indicating the gapless mode associated with the quadrupole and/or octapole order. The strong sensitivity to impurity of the superconductivity suggests unconventional character due to significant quadrupolar fluctuations.

Continuous Transition between Antiferromagnetic Insulator and Paramagnetic Metal in the Pyrochlore Iridate Eu2Ir2O7

Our single crystal study of the magneto-thermal and transport properties of the pyrochlore iridate Eu2Ir2O7 reveals a continuous phase transition from a paramagnetic metal to an antiferromagnetic insulator for a sample with stoichiometry within ~1% resolution. The insulating phase has strong proximity to an antiferromagnetic semimetal, which is stabilized by several % level of the off-stoichiometry. Our observations suggest that in addition to electronic correlation and spin-orbit coupling the magnetic order is essential for opening the charge gap.

Magnetic order induced by Fe substitution of Al site in the heavy fermion systems alpha-YbAlB4 and beta-YbAlB4

beta-YbAlB4 is a heavy fermion superconductor that exhibits a quantum criticality without tuning at zero field and under ambient pressure. We have succeeded in substituting Fe for Al in beta-YbAlB4 as well as the polymorphous compound alpha-YbAlB4, which in contrast has a heavy Fermi liquid ground state. Full structure determination by single crystal X-ray diffraction confirmed no change in crystal structure for both alpha- and beta-YbAlB4, in addition to volume contraction with Fe substitution. Our measurements of the magnetization and specific heat indicate that both alpha-YbAl0.93Fe0.07B4 and beta-YbAl0.94Fe0.06B4 exhibit a magnetic order, most likely of a canted antiferromagnetic type, at $7\sim 9$ K. The increase in the entropy as well as the decrease in the antiferromagnetic Weiss temperature with the Fe substitution in both systems indicates that the chemical pressure due to the Fe substitution suppresses the Kondo temperature and induces the magnetism.

Superconducting gap structure of CeIrIn5 from field-angle-resolved measurements of its specific heat

In order to identify the gap structure of CeIrIn5, we measured field-angle-resolved specific heat C(phi) by conically rotating the magnetic field H around the c axis at low temperatures down to 80 mK. We revealed that C(phi) exhibits a fourfold angular oscillation, whose amplitude decreases monotonically by tilting H out of the ab plane. Detailed microscopic calculations based on the quasiclassical Eilenberger equation confirm that the observed features are uniquely explained by assuming the dx2-y2-wave gap. These results strongly indicate that CeIrIn5 is a dx2-y2-wave superconductor and suggest the universal pairing mechanism in CeMIn5 (M = Co, Rh, and Ir).

Superconductivity in the Ferroquadrupolar State in the Quadrupolar Kondo Lattice PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$

The cubic compound PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ is a quadrupolar Kondo lattice system that exhibits quadrupolar ordering due to the non-Kramers $Γ_3$ ground doublet and has strong hybridization between $4f$ and conduction electrons. Our study using high-purity single crystal reveals that PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ exhibits type-II superconductivity at $T_{\rm c} = 200$ mK in the nonmagnetic ferroquadrupolar state. The superconducting critical temperature and field phase diagram suggests moderately enhanced effective mass of $m^*/m_0 \sim 16$.

Ferro-quadrupolar ordering in PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$

Origin of the non-magnetic phase transition in PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$, reported earlier in the macroscopic study, has been asserted microscopically using elastic and inelastic neutron scattering techniques. It has been shown spectroscopically that the crystalline-electric-field ground state is a non-magnetic $Γ_3$ doublet, whereas the excited states are two triplets ($Γ_4$ and $Γ_5$) and a singlet ($Γ_1$). The diffraction experiment under external magnetic field shows that the non-magnetic transition is indeed ferro-quadrupolar ordering, which takes place as a consequence of cooperative removal of the ground-state-doublet degeneracy. It is therefore concluded that PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ is another rare example of Pr compounds exhibiting non-magnetic quadrupolar order.

Kondo Effects and Multipolar Order in the cubic PrTr2Al20 (Tr=Ti, V)

Our single crystal study reveals that PrTr2Al20 (Tr = Ti and V) provides the first examples of a cubic Γ3 nonmagnetic ground doublet system that shows the Kondo effect including a -ln T dependent resistivity. The Γ3 quadrupolar moments in PrV2Al20 induce anomalous metallic behavior through hybridization with conduction electrons, such as T^{1/2} dependent resistivity and susceptibility below ~ 20 K down to its ordering temperature T_O = 0.6 K. In PrTi2Al20, however, quadrupoles are well-localized and exhibit an order at T_O = 2.0 K. Stronger Kondo coupling in PrV2Al20 than in PrTi2Al20 suppresses quadrupolar ordering, and instead promotes hybridization between the Γ3 doublet and conduction electrons, leading to most likely the quadrupolar Kondo effect.

Quantum Criticality without Tuning in the Mixed Valence Compound beta-YbAlB4

Fermi liquid theory, the standard theory of metals, has been challenged by a number of observations of anomalous metallic behavior found in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition. The breakdown of the Fermi liquid is accomplished by fine-tuning the material to a quantum critical point using a control parameter such as the magnetic field, pressure, or chemical composition. Our high precision magnetization measurements of the ultrapure f-electron based superconductor β-YbAlB4 demonstrate a scaling of its free energy indicative of zero-field quantum criticality without tuning in a metal. The breakdown of Fermi-liquid behavior takes place in a mixed-valence state, in sharp contrast with other known examples of quantum critical f-electron systems that are magnetic Kondo lattice systems with integral valence.

Strong Valence Fluctuation Effects in Sm$Tr_2$Al$_{20}$($Tr=$Ti, V, Cr)

We present a single crystal study of low temperature magnetism and transport in Sm$Tr_2$Al$_{20}$ ($Tr =$ Ti, V and Cr). Strong valence fluctuation is manifested as Kondo effects including a large Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$, a weak temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility and a $-\ln T$ dependent resistivity. All the systems order antiferromagnetically at $T_{\rm N}=$ 6.4 K (Ti), 2.3 K (V) and 1.8 K (Cr). Systematic change in the susceptibility, specific heat, and resistivity indicates that stronger $c$-$f$ hybridization in SmV$_2$Al$_{20}$ and SmCr$_2$Al$_{20}$ than in SmTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ suppresses $T_{\rm N}$ and induces the valence fluctuations and moreover field insensitive heavy fermion states.

High Field ESR and Magnetization of the Triangular Lattice Antiferromagnet NiGa2S4

We report the experimental and the analytical results of electron spin resonance (ESR) and magnetization in high magnetic fields up to about 68 T of the quasi two-dimensional triangular lattice antiferromagnet NiGa$_2$S$_4$. From the temperature evolution of the ESR absorption linewidth, we find a distinct disturbing of the development of the spin correlation by $Z_2$-vortices between 23 K and 8.5 K. Below $T_{\rm{v}}=8.5$ K, spin-wave calculations based on a 57$^{\circ}$ spiral spin order well explains the frequency dependence of the ESR resonance fields and high field magnetization processes for $H$$\parallel$$c$ and $H$$\perp$$c$, although the magnetization for $H$$\perp$$c$ at high fields is different from the calculated one. Furthermore, we explain the field independent specific heat with $T^2$-dependence by the same spin-wave calculation, but the magnitude of the specific heat is much less than the observed one. Accordingly, these results suggest the occurrence of a $Z_2$ vortex-induced topological transition at $T_{\rm{v}}$ and may indicate quantum effects beyond the descriptions based on the above classical spin models.

Successive phase transitions and phase diagrams of the quasi-two-dimensional triangular antiferromagnet Rb4Mn(MoO4)3

Comprehensive experimental studies by magnetic, thermal and neutron measurements have clarified that Rb4Mn(MoO4)3 is a model system of a quasi-2D triangular Heisenberg antiferromagnet with an easy-axis anisotropy, exhibiting successive transitions across an intermediate collinear phase. As a rare case for geometrically frustrated magnetism, quantitative agreement between experiment and theory is found for complete, anisotropic phase diagrams as well as magnetic properties.
