Mildly relativistic magnetized shocks in electron-ion plasmas -- II. Particle acceleration and heating

Particle acceleration and heating at mildly relativistic magnetized shocks in electron-ion plasma are investigated with unprecedentedly high-resolution two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations that include ion-scale shock rippling. Electrons are super-adiabatically heated at the shock, and most of the energy transfer from protons to electrons takes place at or downstream of the shock. We are the first to demonstrate that shock rippling is crucial for the energization of electrons at the shock. They remain well below equipartition with the protons. The downstream electron spectra are approximately thermal with a limited supra-thermal power-law component. Our results are discussed in the context of wakefield acceleration and the modelling of electromagnetic radiation from blazar cores.

Particle Acceleration by Pickup Process Upstream of Relativistic Shocks

Particle acceleration at magnetized purely perpendicular relativistic shocks in electron-ion plasmas are studied by means of two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. Magnetized shocks with the upstream bulk Lorentz factor $γ_1 \gg 1$ are known to emit intense electromagnetic waves from the shock front, which induce electrostatic plasma waves (wakefield) and transverse filamentary structures in the upstream region via the stimulated/induced Raman scattering and the filamentation instability, respectively. The wakefield and filaments inject a fraction of incoming particles into a particle acceleration process, in which particles are once decoupled from the upstream bulk flow by the wakefield, and are piked up again by the flow. The picked-up particles are accelerated by the motional electric field. The maximum attainable Lorentz factor is estimated as $γ_{max,e} \sim αγ_1^3$ for electrons and $γ_{max,i} \sim (1+m_eγ_1/m_i)γ_1^2$ for ions, where $α\sim 10$ is determined from our simulation results. $α$ can increase up to $γ_1$ for weakly magnetized shock if $γ_1$ is sufficiently large. This result indicates that highly relativistic astrophysical shocks such as external shocks of gamma-ray bursts can be an efficient particle accelerator.

Field-Orientation Effect on Ferro-Quadrupole Order in PrTi2Al20

Ferro-quadrupole (FQ) order in the non-Kramers $Γ_3$ doublet system PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$ has been investigated via angle-resolved measurements of the specific heat, rotational magnetocaloric effect, and entropy, under a rotating magnetic field within the $(1\bar{1}0)$ plane. The FQ transition occurring at 2 K is robust when the magnetic field $B$ is applied precisely along the $[111]$ direction. By contrast, the magnetic field of larger than 1 T tilted away from the $[111]$ direction sensitively changes the FQ transition to a crossover. The energy gap between the ground and first-excited states in the FQ order increases remarkably with the magnetic field in $B \parallel [001]$, but hardly depends on the magnetic-field strength, at least up to 5 T, in the field orientation between the $[111]$ and $[110]$ axes. These features can be reproduced by using a phenomenological model for FQ order assuming an anisotropic field-dependent interaction between quadrupoles, which has been recently proposed to explain the field-induced first-order phase transition in PrTi$_2$Al$_{20}$. The present study demonstrates the great potential of the field-angle-resolved measurements for evaluating possible scenarios for multipole orders.

Kinetic simulations of nonrelativistic perpendicular shocks of young supernova remnants. III. Magnetic reconnection

Fully kinetic two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations are used to study electron acceleration at high-Mach-number nonrelativistic perpendicular shocks. SNR shocks are mediated by the Weibel instability which is excited because of an interaction between shock-reflected and upstream ions. Nonlinear evolution of the Weibel instability leads to the formation of current sheets. At the turbulent shock ramp the current sheets decay through magnetic reconnection. The number of reconnection sites strongly depends on the ion-to-electron mass ratio and the Alfvénic Mach number of the simulated shock. Electron acceleration is observed at locations where magnetic reconnection operates. For the highest mass ratios almost all electrons are involved in magnetic reconnection, which makes the magnetic reconnection the dominant acceleration process for electrons at these shocks. We discuss the relevance of our results for 3D systems with realistic ion-to-electron mass ratio.

Mildly relativistic magnetized shocks in electron-ion plasmas I. Electromagnetic shock structure

Mildly relativistic shocks in magnetized electron-ion plasmas are investigated with 2D kinetic particle-in-cell simulations of unprecedentedly high resolution and large scale for conditions that may be found at internal shocks in blazar cores. Ion-scale effects cause corrugations along the shock surface whose properties somewhat depend on the configuration of the mean perpendicular magnetic field, that is either in or out of the simulation plane. We show that the synchrotron maser instability persists to operate in mildly relativistic shocks in agreement with theoretical predictions and produces coherent emission of upstream-propagating electromagnetic waves. Shock front ripples are excited in both mean-field configurations and they engender effective wave amplification. The interaction of these waves with upstream plasma generates electrostatic wakefields.

Quantum critical behaviour and Lifshitz transition in intermediate valence $α$-YbAlB$_4$

Intermetallic compounds containing $f$-electron elements have been prototypical materials for investigating strong electron correlations and quantum criticality (QC). Their heavy fermion ground state evoked by the magnetic $f$-electrons is susceptible to the onset of quantum phases, such as magnetism or superconductivity, due to the enhanced effective mass ($m^{*}$) and a corresponding decrease of the Fermi temperature. However, the presence of $f$-electron valence fluctuations to a non-magnetic state is regarded an anathema to QC, as it usually generates a paramagnetic Fermi-liquid state with quasiparticles of moderate $m^{*}$. Such systems are typically isotropic, with a characteristic energy scale $T_0$ of the order of hundreds of kelvins that require large magnetic fields or pressures to promote a valence or magnetic instability. Here we show that the intermediate valence compound $α$-YbAlB$_4$ surprisingly exhibits both quantum critical behaviour and a Lifshitz transition under low magnetic field, which is attributed to the anisotropy of the hybridization between the conduction and localized $f$-electrons. These findings suggest a new route to bypass the large valence energy scale in developing the QC.

Unveiling Quadrupolar Kondo Effect in the Heavy Fermion Superconductor PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$

Heavy fermion metals hosting multipolar local moments set a new stage for exploring exotic spin-orbital entangled quantum phases. In such systems, the quadrupolar Kondo effect serves as the key ingredient in the orbital-driven non-Fermi liquid (NFL) behavior and quantum critical phenomena. The cubic heavy fermion superconductor Pr$Tr_2$Al$_{20}$ ($Tr$: Ti, V) is a prime candidate for realizing the quadrupolar Kondo lattice. Here, we present a systematic study of the NFL phenomena in PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$ based on magnetoresistance (MR), magnetic susceptibility and specific heat measurements. Upon entering the NFL regime, we observe a universal scaling behavior expected for the quadrupolar Kondo lattice in PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$, which indicates a prominent role of the quadrupolar Kondo effect in driving the NFL behavior. Deviations from this scaling relation occur below $\sim 8$ K, accompanied by a sign change in the MR and a power-law divergence in the specific heat. This anomalous low-temperature state points to the presence of other mechanisms which are not included in the theory, such as heavy fermion coherence or multipolar quantum critical fluctuations.

Multiband electronic transport in $α$-Yb$_{1-x}$Sr$_{x}$AlB$_{4}$ [x = 0, 0.19(3)] single crystals

We report on the evidence for the multiband electronic transport in $α$-YbAlB$_{4}$ and $α$-Yb$_{0.81(2)}$Sr$_{0.19(3)}$AlB$_{4}$. Multiband transport reveals itself below 10 K in both compounds via Hall effect measurements, whereas anisotropic magnetic ground state sets in below 3 K in $α$-Yb$_{0.81(2)}$Sr$_{0.19(3)}$AlB$_{4}$. Our results show that Sr$^{2+}$ substitution enhances conductivity, but does not change the quasiparticle mass of bands induced by heavy fermion hybridization.

NMR Observation of Ferro-quadrupole Order in PrTi2Al20

We report the results of 27Al-NMR measurements on a single crystal of PrTi2Al20. This compound shows a phase transition near 2 K associated with the quadrupole degree of freedom of Pr ions, for which the ground state of the crystalline electric field is a nonmagnetic doublet. When a magnetic field is applied along the <111> direction, the NMR lines split upon entering the low-temperature phase, indicating the breaking of the three fold rotation symmetry due to the field-induced magnetic dipole perpendicular to the field. This provides microscopic evidence for a ferro order of the O20 quadrupole. Although a first-order transition is expected theoretically, the line splitting evolves continuously within the experimental resolution.

Stability Property of Numerical Cherenkov Radiation and its Application to Relativistic Shock Simulations

We studied the stability property of numerical Cherenkov radiation in relativistic plasma flows employing particle-in-cell simulations. Using the implicit finite-difference time-domain method to solve Maxwell equations, we found that nonphysical instability was greatly inhibited with a Courant-Friedrichs-Lewy (CFL) number of 1.0. The present result contrasts with recently reported results (Vay, J. L., et al. 2011, J. Comp. Phys, 230, 5908; Godfrey. B., & Vay, J. L. 2013, J. Comp. Phys, 243, 260; Xu, X., et al. 2013, Comput. Phys. Commun, 184, 2503) in which magical CFL numbers in the range 0.5-0.7 were obtained with explicit field solvers. In addition, we found employing higher-order shape functions and an optimal implicitness factor further suppressed long-wavelength modes of the instability. The findings allowed the examination of the long-term evolution of a relativistic collisionless shock without the generation of nonphysical wave excitations in the upstream. This achievement will allow us to investigate particle accelerations in relativistic shocks associated with, for example, gamma-ray bursts.

Unstable Spin-Ice Order in the Stuffed Metallic Pyrochlore Pr$_{2+x}$Ir$_{2-x}$O$_{7-δ}$

Specific heat, elastic neutron scattering, and muon spin rotation ($μ$SR) experiments have been carried out on a well-characterized sample of "stuffed" (Pr-rich) Pr$_{2+x}$Ir$_{2-x}$O$_{7-δ}$. Elastic neutron scattering shows the onset of long-range spin-ice "2-in/2-out" magnetic order at $T_M = 0.93$ K, with an ordered moment of 1.7(1)$μ_\mathrm{B}$/Pr ion at low temperatures. Approximate lower bounds on the correlation length and correlation time in the ordered state are 170 Å and 0.7 ns, respectively. $μ$SR experiments yield an upper bound 2.6(7) mT on the local field $B_\mathrm{loc}^{4f}$ at the muon site, which is nearly two orders of magnitude smaller than the expected dipolar field for long-range spin-ice ordering of 1.7$μ_B$ moments (120--270 mT, depending on muon site). This shortfall is due in part to splitting of the non-Kramers crystal-field ground-state doublets of near-neighbor Pr$^{3+}$ ions by the $μ^+$-induced lattice distortion. For this to be the only effect, however, $\sim$160 Pr moments out to a distance of $\sim$14 Å must be suppressed. An alternative scenario, which is consistent with the observed reduced nuclear hyperfine Schottky anomaly in the specific heat, invokes slow correlated Pr-moment fluctuations in the ordered state that average $B_\mathrm{loc}^{4f}$ on the $μ$SR time scale (${\sim}10^{-7}$ s), but are static on the time scale of the elastic neutron scattering experiments (${\sim}10^{-9}$ s). In this picture the dynamic muon relaxation suggests a Pr$^{3+}$ $4f$ correlation time of a few nanoseconds, which should be observable in a neutron spin echo experiment.

Anisotropic transverse magnetoresistivity in alpha-YbAlB4

We measured the transverse magnetoresistivity of the mixed valence compound $α$-YbAlB$_4$. Two configurations were used where current was applied along [110] direction for both and magnetic field was applied along [-110] and $c$-axis. We found the transverse magnetoresistivity is highly anisotropic. In the weak field below 1 T, it is consistent with stronger $c$-$f$ hybridization in the $ab$ plane which was suggested from the previous zero field resistivity measurements. At the higher field above 3 T, we observed a negative transverse magnetoresistivity for the field applied along the $c$-axis. The temperature dependences of the resistivity measured at several different fields suggest the suppression of the heavy fermion behavior at the characteristic field of $\sim 5.5$ T.

Anomalous specific heat behaviour in the quadrupolar Kondo system PrV2Al20

We have measured the specific heat of PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$ at very low temperatures, using high quality single crystals with the residual resistivity ratio ~ 20. The high-quality single crystals exhibit clear double transitions at $T_{\rm Q} =$ 0.75 K and $T^* =$ 0.65 K. These transitions are clearer and shift to higher temperature in higher quality single crystals. Besides, there was no hysteresis in those transitions in warming and cooling process of the heat capacity measurements. In the ordered state below $T^*$, the specific heat shows a $T^4$ dependence, indicating the gapless mode associated with the quadrupole and/or octupole ordering.

Field evolution of quantum critical and heavy Fermi-liquid components in the magnetization of the mixed valence compound beta-YbAlB4

We present the high-precision magnetization data of the valence fluctuating heavy fermion superconductor $β$-YbAlB$_4$ in a wide temperature range from 0.02 K to 320 K spanning four orders of magnitude. We made detailed analyses of the $T/B$ scaling of the magnetization, and firmly confirmed the unconventional zero-field quantum criticality (QC) without tuning. We examined other possible scaling relationship such as $T/(B-B_c)^δ$ scaling, and confirmed that $δ= 1$ provides the best quality of the fit with an upper bound on the critical magnetic field $\vert B_c \vert <0.2$~mT. We further discuss the heavy Fermi-liquid component of the magnetization after subtracting the QC component estimated based on the $T/B$ scaling. The temperature dependence of the heavy Fermi-liquid component is found very similar to the magnetization of the polymorph $α$-YbAlB$_4$. In addition, the heavy Fermi-liquid component is suppressed in the magnetic field above $\sim$ 5 T as in $α$-YbAlB$_4$. This was also confirmed by the magnetization measurements up to $\sim 50$ T for both $α$- and $β$-YbAlB$_4$. Interestingly, the detailed analyses revealed that the only a part of $f$ electrons participates in the zero-field QC and the heavy fermion behavior. We also present a temperature - magnetic field phase diagram of \ybal to illustrate how the characteristic temperature and field scales evolves near the QC.

Heavy Fermion Superconductivity in the Quadrupole Ordered State of PrV2Al20

PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$ is a rare example of a heavy fermion system based on strong hybridization between conduction electrons and nonmagnetic quadrupolar moments of the cubic $Γ_3$ ground doublet. Here, we report that a high-quality single crystal of PrV$_2$Al$_{20}$ exhibits superconductivity at $T_{\rm c}=$ 50 mK in the antiferroquadrupole-ordered state under ambient pressure. The heavy fermion character of the superconductivity is evident from the specific heat jump of $ΔC/T \sim 0.3$ J/mol K$^2$ and the effective mass $m^*/m_0 \sim 140$ estimated from the temperature dependence of the upper critical field. Furthermore, the high-quality single crystals exhibit double transitions at $T_{\rm Q}$ = 0.75 K and $T^{*}$ = 0.65 K associated with quadrupole and octapole degrees of freedom of the $Γ_3$ doublet. In the ordered state, the specific heat $C/T$ shows a $T^3$ dependence, indicating the gapless mode associated with the quadrupole and/or octapole order. The strong sensitivity to impurity of the superconductivity suggests unconventional character due to significant quadrupolar fluctuations.

T/B scaling of magnetization in the mixed valent compound β-YbAlB4

Here we provide the first clear evidence of Fermi-liquid breakdown in an intermediate valence system. We employ high precision magnetization measurements of the valence fluctuating superconductor beta-YbAlB4 to probe the quantum critical free energy down to temperatures far below the characteristic energy scale of the valence fluctuations. The observed T/B scaling in the magnetization over three decades not only indicates unconventional quantum criticality, but places an upper bound on the critical magnetic field |B_c| < 0.2 mT, a value comparable with the Earth's magnetic field and six orders of magnitude smaller than the valence fluctuation scale. This tiny value of the upper bound on B_c, well inside the superconducting dome, raises the fascinating possibility that valence fluctuating beta-YbAlB4 is intrinsically quantum critical, without tuning the magnetic field, pressure, or composition: the first known example of such a phenomenon in a metal.

Electron Accelerations at High Mach Number Shocks: Two-Dimensional Particle-In-Cell Simulations in Various Parameter Regimes

Electron accelerations at high Mach number collision-less shocks are investigated by means of two-dimensional electromagnetic Particle-in-Cell simulations with various Alfven Mach numbers, ion-to-electron mass ratios, and the upstream electron beta_e (the ratio of the thermal pressure to the magnetic pressure). We found electrons are effectively accelerated at a super-high Mach number shock (MA~30) with a mass ratio of M/m=100 and beta_e=0.5. The electron shock surfing acceleration is an effective mechanism for accelerating the particles toward the relativistic regime even in two dimensions with the large mass ratio. Buneman instability excited at the leading edge of the foot in the super-high Mach number shock results in a coherent electrostatic potential structure. While multi-dimensionality allows the electrons to escape from the trapping region, they can interact with the strong electrostatic field several times. Simulation runs in various parameter regimes indicate that the electron shock surfing acceleration is an effective mechanism for producing relativistic particles in extremely-high Mach number shocks in supernova remnants, provided that the upstream electron temperature is reasonably low.

Multi-Moment Advection scheme for Vlasov simulations

We present a new numerical scheme for solving the advection equation and its application to the Vlasov simulation. The scheme treats not only point values of a profile but also its zeroth to second order piecewise moments as dependent variables, and advances them on the basis of their governing equations. We have developed one- and two-dimensional schemes and show that they provide quite accurate solutions compared to other existing schemes with the same memory usage. The two-dimensional scheme can solve the solid body rotation problem of a gaussian profile with little numerical diffusion. This is a very important property for Vlasov simulations of magnetized plasma. The application of the scheme to the electromagnetic Vlasov simulation of collisionless shock waves is presented as a benchmark test.

Multi-moment advection scheme in three dimension for Vlasov simulations of magnetized plasma

We present an extension of the multi-moment advection scheme (Minoshima et al., 2011, J. Comput. Phys.) to the three-dimensional case, for full electromagnetic Vlasov simulations of magnetized plasma. The scheme treats not only point values of a profile but also its zeroth to second order piecewise moments as dependent variables, and advances them on the basis of their governing equations. Similar to the two-dimensional scheme, the three-dimensional scheme can accurately solve the solid body rotation problem of a gaussian profile with little numerical dispersion or diffusion. This is a very important property for Vlasov simulations of magnetized plasma. We apply the scheme to electromagnetic Vlasov simulations. Propagation of linear waves and nonlinear evolution of the electron temperature anisotropy instability are successfully simulated with a good accuracy of the energy conservation.

The Kelvin-Helmholtz instability in Orion: a source of turbulence and chemical mixing

Hydrodynamical instabilities are believed to power some of the small scale (0.1-10 pc) turbulence and chemical mixing in the interstellar medium. Identifying such instabilities has always been difficult but recent observations of a wavelike structure (the Ripples) in the Orion nebula have been interpreted as a signature of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability (KHI), occurring at the interface between the HII region and the molecular cloud. However, this has not been verified theoretically. In this letter, we investigate theoretically the stability of this interface using observational constraints for the local physical conditions. A linear analysis shows that the HII/molecular cloud interface is indeed KH unstable for a certain range of magnetic field orientation. We find that the maximal growth-rates correspond to typical timescales of a few 1e4 years and instability wavelengths of 0.06 to 0.6 pc. We predict that after 2e5 years the KHI saturates and forms a turbulent layer of thickness ~0.5 pc. The KHI can remain in linear phase over a maximum distance of 0.75 pc. These spatial and time scales are compatible with the Ripples representing the linear phase of the KHI. These results suggest that the KHI may be crucial to generate turbulence and to bring heavy elements injected by the winds of massive stars in HII regions to colder regions where planetary systems around low mass stars are being formed. This could apply to the transport of 26Al injected by a massive star in an HII region to the nascent solar-system.

Anisotropic heavy Fermi-liquid formation in the valence fluctuating $α$-YbAlB$_4$

$α$-YbAlB$_4$ is the locally isostructural polymorph of $β$-YbAlB$_4$, the first example of an Yb-based heavy fermion superconductor which exhibits pronounced non-Fermi-liquid behavior above $T_{\rm c}$. Interestingly, both $α$-YbAlB$_4$ and $β$-YbAlB$_4$ have strongly intermediate valence. Our single crystal study of the specific heat, magnetization and resistivity has confirmed the Fermi liquid ground state of $α$-YbAlB$_4$ ~in contrast with the quantum criticality observed in $β$-YbAlB$_4$. Both systems exhibit Kondo lattice behavior with the characteristic temperature scale $T^* \sim$ 8 K in addition to a valence fluctuation scale $\sim 200$ K. Below $T^*$, $α$-YbAlB$_4$ a heavy Fermi liquid state with an electronic specific heat coefficient $γ\sim$ 130 mJ/mol K$^2$ and a large Wilson ratio more than 7, which indicates ferromagnetic correlation between Yb moments. A large anisotropy in the resistivity suggests that the hybridization between 4$f$ and conduction electrons is much stronger in the $ab$-plane than along the c-axis. The strongly anisotropic hybridization as well as the large Wilson ratio is the key to understand the unusual Kondo lattice behavior and heavy fermion formation in mixed valent compounds.

Multi-Moment Advection scheme for Vlasov simulations

We present a new numerical scheme for solving the advection equation and its application to Vlasov simulations. The scheme treats not only point values of a profile but also its zeroth to second order piecewise moments as dependent variables, for better conservation of the information entropy. We have developed one- and two-dimensional schemes and show that they provide quite accurate solutions within reasonable usage of computational resources compared to other existing schemes. The two-dimensional scheme can accurately solve the solid body rotation problem of a gaussian profile for more than hundred rotation periods with little numerical diffusion. This is crucially important for Vlasov simulations of magnetized plasmas. Applications of the one- and two-dimensional schemes to electrostatic and electromagnetic Vlasov simulations are presented with some benchmark tests.

Quantum Criticality without Tuning in the Mixed Valence Compound beta-YbAlB4

Fermi liquid theory, the standard theory of metals, has been challenged by a number of observations of anomalous metallic behavior found in the vicinity of a quantum phase transition. The breakdown of the Fermi liquid is accomplished by fine-tuning the material to a quantum critical point using a control parameter such as the magnetic field, pressure, or chemical composition. Our high precision magnetization measurements of the ultrapure f-electron based superconductor β-YbAlB4 demonstrate a scaling of its free energy indicative of zero-field quantum criticality without tuning in a metal. The breakdown of Fermi-liquid behavior takes place in a mixed-valence state, in sharp contrast with other known examples of quantum critical f-electron systems that are magnetic Kondo lattice systems with integral valence.
