Information Fluctuation Theorem for an Open Quantum Bipartite System

We study an arbitrary non-equilibrium dynamics of a quantum bipartite system coupled to a reservoir. For its characterization, we present a fluctuation theorem (FT) that explicitly addresses the quantum correlation of subsystems during the thermodynamic evolution. To our aim, we designate the local and the global states altogether in the time-forward and the time-reversed transition probabilities. In view of the two-point measurement scheme, only the global states are subject to measurements whereas the local states are used only as an augmented information on the composite system. We specifically derive a FT in such a form that relates the entropy production of local systems in the time-forward transition to the change of quantum correlation in the time-reversed transition. This also leads to a useful thermodynamic inequality and we illustrate its advantage by an example of an isothermal process on Werner states.

Fluctuation Theorem for Arbitrary Quantum Bipartite Systems

We present a fluctuation theorem for quantum bipartite systems in which the subsystems exchange information with each other. Our information fluctuation theorem includes correlations by introducing a quantum mechanical mutual information content and a statistical probability distribution which allows one to consider statistical averages when computing the thermodynamic and informational quantities. The fundamental limit of heat transferred from a heat reservoir for quantum bipartite systems involving the quantum mutual information is then derived. We illustrate the use of our thermodynamic inequality in quantum computing and discuss our results in terms of Landauer's principle.

Exceptional points in coupled dissipative dynamical systems

We study the transient behavior in coupled dissipative dynamical systems based on the linear analysis around the steady state. We find that the transient time is minimized at a specific set of system parameters and show that at this parameter set, two eigenvalues and two eigenvectors of Jacobian matrix coalesce at the same time, this degenerate point is called the exceptional point. For the case of coupled limit cycle oscillators, we investigate the transient behavior into the amplitude death state, and clarify that the exceptional point is associated with a critical point of frequency locking, as well as the transition of the envelope oscillation.

Localization in chaotic systems with a single-channel opening

We introduce a single-channel opening in a random Hamiltonian and a quantized chaotic map: localization on the opening occurs as a sensible deviation of the wavefunction statistics from the predictions of random matrix theory, even in the semiclassical limit. Increasing the coupling to the open channel in the quantum model, we observe a similar picture to resonance trapping, made of few fast-decaying states, whose left (right) eigenfunctions are entirely localized on the (preimage of the) opening, and plentiful long-lived states, whose probability density is instead suppressed at the opening. For the latter we derive and test a linear relation between the wavefunction intensities and the decay rates, similar to Breit-Wigner law. We then analyze the statistics of the eigenfunctions of the corresponding (discretized) classical propagator, finding a similar behavior to the quantum system only in the weak-coupling regime.

Abnormal high-$Q$ modes of coupled stadium-shaped microcavities

It is well known that the strongly deformed microcavity with fully chaotic ray dynamics cannot support high-Q modes due to its fast chaotic diffusion to the critical line of refractive emission. Here, we investigate how the Q factor is modified when two chaotic cavities are coupled, and show that some modes, whose Q factor is about 10 times higher than that of the corresponding single cavity, can exist. These abnormal high-Q modes are the result of an optimal combination of coupling and cavity geometry. As an example, in the coupled stadium-shaped microcavities, the mode pattern extends over both cavities such that it follows a whispering-gallery-type mode at both ends, whereas a big coupling spot forms at the closest contact of the two microcavities. The pattern of such a 'rounded bow tie' mode allows the mode to have a high-Q factor. This mode pattern minimizes the leakage of light at both ends of the microcavities as the pattern at both ends is similar to whispering gallery mode.

Exotic quantum holonomy and higher-order exceptional points in quantum kicked tops

The correspondence between exotic quantum holonomy that occurs in families of Hermitian cycles, and exceptional points (EPs) for non-Hermitian quantum theory is examined in quantum kicked tops. Under a suitable condition, an explicit expressions of the adiabatic parameter dependencies of quasienergies and stationary states, which exhibit anholonomies, are obtained. It is also shown that the quantum kicked tops with the complexified adiabatic parameter have a higher order EP, which is broken into lower order EPs with the application of small perturbations. The stability of exotic holonomy against such bifurcation is demonstrated.

Is Bell inequality violated once measurement independence is relaxed?

It has been believed that statistical inequality such as Bell inequality should be modified once measurement independence (MI), the assumption that observers can freely choose measurement settings without changing the probability distribution of hidden variables, is relaxed. However, we show that there exists the possibility that Bell inequality is still valid even if MI is relaxed. MI is only a sufficient condition to derive Bell inequality when both determinism and setting independence, usually called as local realism, are satisfied. We thus propose a new condition necessary and sufficient for deriving Bell inequality, called as concealed measurement dependence.

Optimal work of quantum Szilard engine

We have found the optimal condition of the work performed by the quantum Szilard engine (SZE) containing multi-particles. Usually the optimal work of a cyclic engine is achieved when the whole thermodynamic process is reversible. Although the quantum SZE inherently contains an irreversible process, we can still define effectively reversible protocol based upon the force of time-forward and time-backward processes.

Heat engine driven by purely quantum information

The key question of this paper is whether work can be extracted from a heat engine by using purely quantum mechanical information. If the answer is yes, what is its mathematical formula? First, by using a bipartite memory we show that the work extractable from a heat engine is bounded not only by the free energy change and the sum of the entropy change of an individual memory but also by the change of quantum mutual information contained inside the memory. We then find that the engine can be driven by purely quantum information, expressed as the so-called quantum discord, forming a part of the quantum mutual information. To confirm it, as a physical example we present the Szilard engine containing a diatomic molecule with a semi-permeable wall.

Analysis of multiple exceptional points related to three interacting eigenmodes in a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian

We have investigated the exceptional points (EPs) which are degeneracies of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, in the case that three modes are interacting with each other. Even though the parametric evolution of the modes cannot be uniquely determined when encircling more than two EPs once, we can recover the initial configuration of the modes by encircling two EPs three times or three EPs twice. We confirm our expectation by numerically calculating the modes of an open quantum system, two dielectric microdisks, and 3$\times$3 matrix model.

Effect of Disorder in BCS-BEC Crossover

In this article we have investigated the effect of weak random disorder in the BCS-BEC crossover region. The disorder is included in the mean field formalism through NSR theory of superconducting fluctuations. A self consistent numerical solution of the coupled equations involving the superfluid gap parameter and density as a function of the disorder strength, albeit unaffected in the BCS phase, yields a depleted order parameter in the BEC regime and an interesting nonmonotonic behavior of the condensate fraction in the vicinity of the unitary region, and a gradual depletion thereafter, as the pairing interaction is continuously tuned across the BCS-BEC crossover. The unitary regime thus demonstrates a robust paradigm of superfluidity even when the disorder is introduced. To support the above feature and shed light on a lingering controversial issue, we have computed the behavior of the sound mode across the crossover that distinctly reveals a suppression of the sound velocity. We also find the Landau critical velocity that shows similar nonmonotonicity as that of the condensate fraction data, thereby supporting a stable superfluid scenario in the unitary limit.

Gauge invariants of eigenspace and eigenvalue anholonomies: Examples in hierarchical quantum circuits

A set of gauge invariants are identified for the gauge theory of quantum anholonomies, which comprise both the Berry phase and an exotic anholonomy in eigenspaces. We examine these invariants for hierarchical families of quantum circuits whose qubit size can be arbitrarily large. It is also found that a hierarchical family of quantum circuits generally involves an NP-complete problem.

Quasiattractors in coupled maps and coupled dielectric cavities

We study the origin of attracting phenomena in the ray dynamics of coupled optical microcavities. To this end we investigate a combined map that is composed of standard and linear map, and a selection rule that defines when which map has to be used. We find that this system shows attracting dynamics, leading exactly to a quasiattractor, due to collapse of phase space. For coupled dielectric disks, we derive the corresponding mapping based on a ray model with deterministic selection rule and study the quasiattractor obtained from it. We also discuss a generalized Poincaré surface of section at dielectric interfaces.

Terahertz beat freuquency generation from two-mode lasing operation of coupled microdisk laser

We propose a coupled microdisk laser as a compact and tunable laser source for the generation of a coherent continuous wave THz radiation by photomixing. Using the Schrödinger-Bloch model including the nonlinear effect of active medium, we find single mode and two mode lasings depending on the pumping strength. We explain the transitions of lasing modes in terms of resonant modes which are the solutions of the Schrödinger-Bloch model without active medium and nonlinear interaction. In particular, a two mode lasing is shown to generate THz oscillating frequency originating from the light beating of two nearly degenerated resonant modes with different symmetries.

Eigenvalue and eigenspace anholonomies in hierarchical systems

An adiabatic cycle of parameters in a quantum system can yield the quantum anholonomies, nontrivial evolution not just in phase of the states, but also in eigenvalues and eigenstates. Such exotic anholonomies imply that an adiabatic cycle rearranges eigenstates even without spectral degeneracy. We show that an arbitrarily large quantum circuit generated by recursive extension can also exhibit the eigenvalue and eigenspace anholonomies.

Quantum Szilard Engine

The Szilard engine (SZE) is the quintessence of Maxwell's demon, which can extract the work from a heat bath by utilizing information. We present the first complete quantum analysis of the SZE, and derive an analytic expression of the quantum-mechanical work performed by a quantum SZE containing an arbitrary number of molecules, where it is crucial to regard the process of insertion or removal of a wall as a legitimate thermodynamic process. We find that more (less) work can be extracted from the bosonic (fermionic) SZE due to the indistinguishability of identical particles.

preprint2011arXiv

What role does the third law of thermodynamics play in Szilard engines?

The role of the third law of thermodynamics in the Szilard engine has been addressed. If the ground state is non-degenerate, the entropy production defined as the work extractable from the engine divided by temperature vanishes as temperature approaches zero due to the third law. The degenerate ground state induced by the symmetry or by accidence gives rise to non-zero entropy production at zero temperature associated with the residual entropy. Various physical situations such as the SZE consisting of bosons or fermions either with or without interaction have been investigated.

Coupled non-identical microdisks: avoided crossing of energy levels and unidirectional far-field emission

We investigate two coupled microdisks with non-identical radii focusing on the parametric evolution of energy levels and the unidirectional far-field emission. We show that the evolution of energy levels is characterized by the avoided crossing intrinsically associated with the exceptional point or the non-Hermitian degeneracy. These spectral properties explain highly asymmetric near-field intensity pattern of the resonance mode. The observed unidirectional far-field emission is shown to be understood by considering the forbidden inter-disk coupling in the ray picture induced by the frustrated total internal reflection near the closest point between two disks when the inter-disk distance is small enough.

Exotic quantum holonomy induced by degeneracy hidden in complex parameter space

An adiabatic change of a bound state along a closed circuit in the parameter space can induces holonomies not only in the phase of the state, but also in the associated eigenspace and eigenvalue. The former is the well-known Berry phase while the latter, namely the exotic holonomy, is found a decade ago and its origin has not been understood yet. By extending the parameter into the complex number, the correspondence of the exotic holonomies and the degeneracy of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, or the exceptional points, is revealed. We show that this explains all the known non-trivial characteristics of the exotic holonomies.

Observation of an exceptional point in a chaotic optical microcavity

We present spectroscopic observation of an exceptional point or the transition point between diabatic crossing and avoided crossing of neighboring quasi-eigenmodes in a chaotic optical microcavity with a large size parameter. The transition to the avoided crossing was impeded until the degree of deformation exceeded a threshold deformation owing to the system's openness also enhanced by the shape deformation. As a result, a singular topology was observed around the exceptional point on the eigenfrequency surfaces, resulting in fundamental inconsistency in mode labeling.

Improvement of conversion efficiency of atom-molecule Bose-Einstein condensate

We investigate the stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in two-color photoassociation for a atom-molecule Bose-Einstein condensate. By applying two time-varying Guassian laser pulses that fulfill generalized two-photon resonance condition, we obtain highly efficient atom-molecule conversion. The efficiency depends on the free-bound detuning and the delay time between the two pulses. By adjusting the parameters optimally, we achieve 92% conversion efficiency.

Storage of spin squeezing in a two-component Bose-Einstein condensate

Efficient control of spin squeezing in a two-component Bose-Einstein Condensate is studied by rapidly turning-off the external field at a time that maximal spin squeezing appears. We show that strong reduction of spin fluctuation can be maintained in a nearly fixed direction for a long time. We explain the underlying physics unambiguously, and present analytical expressions of the maximal-squeezing time.
