Mesoscopic Möbius ladder lattices as non-Hermitian model systems

While classic quantum chaos originated from the idea to set into context nonlinear physics and Hermitian quantum mechanics, non-Hermitian models have enhanced the field in recent years. At the same time, low-dimensional effective matrix models have proven to be a powerful tool in accessing the physical properties of a system in a semiquantitative manner. Here, we focus on two realizations of non-Hermitian physics in mesoscopic systems. First, we consider spiral optical microcavities in which the asymmetric scattering between whispering gallery modes induces the non-Hermitian behaviour. Second, for parity-time (PT) symmetric ladder lattices we compare circular and Möbius geometries. We find the effective coupling between even and odd parity modes to be symmetric but complex in a microscopically derived 2 x 2 matrix model, resulting in non-Hermitian behaviour as well. Most importantly, the Möbius topology acts like a scatterer that induces a qualitatively new form of (avoided) level crossing - a PT-broken phase terminated by exceptional points - resulting from the symmetric but non-Hermitian coupling.

Revealing non-Hermitian band structures of photonic Floquet media

Periodically driven systems, characterised by their inherent non-equilibrium dynamics, are ubiquitously found in both classical and quantum regimes. In the field of photonics, these Floquet systems have begun to provide insight into how time periodicity can extend the concept of spatially periodic photonic crystals and metamaterials to the time domain. However, despite the necessity arising from the presence of non-reciprocal coupling between states in a photonic Floquet medium, a unified non-Hermitian band structure description remains elusive. Here, we experimentally reveal the unique Bloch-Floquet and non-Bloch band structures of a photonic Floquet medium emulated in the microwave regime with a one-dimensional array of time-periodically driven resonators. Specifically, these non-Hermitian band structures are shown to be two measurable distinct subsets of complex eigenfrequency surfaces of the photonic Floquet medium defined in complex momentum space. In the Bloch-Floquet band structure, the driving-induced non-reciprocal coupling between oppositely signed frequency states leads to opening of momentum gaps along the real momentum axis, at the edges of which exceptional phase transitions occur. More interestingly, we show that the non-Bloch band structure defined in the complex Brillouin zone supplements the information on the morphology of complex eigenfrequency surfaces of the photonic Floquet medium. Our work paves the way for a comprehensive understanding of photonic Floquet media in complex energy-momentum space and could provide general guidelines for the study of non-equilibrium photonic phases of matter.

Double layered transformation cavities: Crossover between local and global transformations

We study the resonant modes in double-layered transformation cavities consisting of inner and outer layer boundaries where the mode intensity is mainly located inside the inner layer. This is an intermediate design between a transformation cavity and a cavity in a wholly transformed space of transformation optics. We demonstrate the crossover between these two extreme cases as the outer layer of the cavity varies and also explore the properties of the resonant modes in the cavity. While the near-field patterns of the resonant modes do not change as the outer layer becomes larger, the Q-factors approach those of a cavity in the wholly transformed space of transformation optics, and the far-field patterns are modified.

Whispering gallery modes in triple microdisks of triangular configurations

We study whispering gallery modes in triple microdisks of equilateral and isosceles triangular configurations. The characteristic properties of resonant modes in three microdisks on vertices of an equilateral triangle are explained by discrete rotational symmetry of the triangle. The avoided crossings of resonant modes in three microdisks on vertices of an isosceles triangle are also studied in terms of a combination of single and coupled microdisks. Finally, we propose the matrix models which well explain the resonant modes in triple microdisks.

Emergent localized states at the interface of a twofold $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric lattice

We consider the role of non-triviality resulting from a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian that conserves twofold PT-symmetry assembled by interconnections between a PT-symmetric lattice and its time reversal partner. Twofold PT-symmetry in the lattice produces additional surface exceptional points that play the role of new critical points, along with the bulk exceptional point. We show that there are two distinct regimes possessing symmetry-protected localized states, of which localization lengths are robust against external gain and loss. The states are demonstrated by numerical calculation of a quasi-1D ladder lattice and a 2D bilayered square lattice.

Exceptional points in coupled dissipative dynamical systems

We study the transient behavior in coupled dissipative dynamical systems based on the linear analysis around the steady state. We find that the transient time is minimized at a specific set of system parameters and show that at this parameter set, two eigenvalues and two eigenvectors of Jacobian matrix coalesce at the same time, this degenerate point is called the exceptional point. For the case of coupled limit cycle oscillators, we investigate the transient behavior into the amplitude death state, and clarify that the exceptional point is associated with a critical point of frequency locking, as well as the transition of the envelope oscillation.

Localization in chaotic systems with a single-channel opening

We introduce a single-channel opening in a random Hamiltonian and a quantized chaotic map: localization on the opening occurs as a sensible deviation of the wavefunction statistics from the predictions of random matrix theory, even in the semiclassical limit. Increasing the coupling to the open channel in the quantum model, we observe a similar picture to resonance trapping, made of few fast-decaying states, whose left (right) eigenfunctions are entirely localized on the (preimage of the) opening, and plentiful long-lived states, whose probability density is instead suppressed at the opening. For the latter we derive and test a linear relation between the wavefunction intensities and the decay rates, similar to Breit-Wigner law. We then analyze the statistics of the eigenfunctions of the corresponding (discretized) classical propagator, finding a similar behavior to the quantum system only in the weak-coupling regime.

Abnormal high-$Q$ modes of coupled stadium-shaped microcavities

It is well known that the strongly deformed microcavity with fully chaotic ray dynamics cannot support high-Q modes due to its fast chaotic diffusion to the critical line of refractive emission. Here, we investigate how the Q factor is modified when two chaotic cavities are coupled, and show that some modes, whose Q factor is about 10 times higher than that of the corresponding single cavity, can exist. These abnormal high-Q modes are the result of an optimal combination of coupling and cavity geometry. As an example, in the coupled stadium-shaped microcavities, the mode pattern extends over both cavities such that it follows a whispering-gallery-type mode at both ends, whereas a big coupling spot forms at the closest contact of the two microcavities. The pattern of such a 'rounded bow tie' mode allows the mode to have a high-Q factor. This mode pattern minimizes the leakage of light at both ends of the microcavities as the pattern at both ends is similar to whispering gallery mode.

Analysis of multiple exceptional points related to three interacting eigenmodes in a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian

We have investigated the exceptional points (EPs) which are degeneracies of a non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, in the case that three modes are interacting with each other. Even though the parametric evolution of the modes cannot be uniquely determined when encircling more than two EPs once, we can recover the initial configuration of the modes by encircling two EPs three times or three EPs twice. We confirm our expectation by numerically calculating the modes of an open quantum system, two dielectric microdisks, and 3$\times$3 matrix model.

Quasiattractors in coupled maps and coupled dielectric cavities

We study the origin of attracting phenomena in the ray dynamics of coupled optical microcavities. To this end we investigate a combined map that is composed of standard and linear map, and a selection rule that defines when which map has to be used. We find that this system shows attracting dynamics, leading exactly to a quasiattractor, due to collapse of phase space. For coupled dielectric disks, we derive the corresponding mapping based on a ray model with deterministic selection rule and study the quasiattractor obtained from it. We also discuss a generalized Poincaré surface of section at dielectric interfaces.

Terahertz beat freuquency generation from two-mode lasing operation of coupled microdisk laser

We propose a coupled microdisk laser as a compact and tunable laser source for the generation of a coherent continuous wave THz radiation by photomixing. Using the Schrödinger-Bloch model including the nonlinear effect of active medium, we find single mode and two mode lasings depending on the pumping strength. We explain the transitions of lasing modes in terms of resonant modes which are the solutions of the Schrödinger-Bloch model without active medium and nonlinear interaction. In particular, a two mode lasing is shown to generate THz oscillating frequency originating from the light beating of two nearly degenerated resonant modes with different symmetries.

Designing coupled microcavity lasers for high-Q modes with unidirectional light emission

We design coupled optical microcavities and report directional light emission from high-$Q$ modes for a broad range of refractive indices. The system consists of a circular cavity that provides a high-$Q$ mode in form of a whispering gallery mode, whereas an adjacent deformed microcavity plays the role of a waveguide or collimator of the light transmitted from the circular cavity. As a result of this very simple, yet robust, concept we obtain high-$Q$ modes with promising directional emission characteristics. No information about phase space is required, and the proposed scheme can be easily realized in experiments.

Nonorthogonal pairs of copropagating optical modes in deformed microdisk cavities

Recently, it has been shown that spiral-shaped microdisk cavities support highly nonorthogonal pairs of copropagating modes with a preferred sense of rotation (spatial chirality) [Wiersig et al., Phys. Rev. A 78, 053809 (2008)]. Here, we provide numerical evidence which indicates that such pairs are a common feature of deformed microdisk cavities which lack mirror symmetries. In particular, we demonstrate that discontinuities of the cavity boundary such as the notch in the spiral cavity are not needed. We find a quantitative relation between the nonorthogonality and the chirality of the modes which agrees well with the predictions from an effective non-Hermitian Hamiltonian. A comparison to ray-tracing simulations is given.

Quasiscarred modes and their branching behavior at an exceptional point

We study quasiscarring phenomenon and mode branching at an exceptional point (EP) in typically deformed microcavities. It is shown that quasiscarred (QS) modes are dominant in some mode group and their pattern can be understood by short-time ray dynamics near the critical line. As cavity deformation increases, high-Q and low-Q QS modes are branching in an opposite way, at an EP, into two robust mode types showing QS and diamond patterns, respectively. Similar branching behavior can be also found at another EP appearing at a higher deformation. This branching behavior of QS modes has its origin on the fact that an EP is a square-root branch point.

Ray model and ray-wave correspondence in coupled optical microdisks

We introduce a ray model for coupled optical microdisks, in which we select coupling-efficient rays among the splitting rays. We investigate the resulting phase-space structure and report island structures arising from the ray-coupling between the two microdisks. We find the microdisks's refractive index to influence the phase-space structure and calculate the stability and decay rates of the islands. Turning to ray-wave correspondence, we find many resonances to be directly related to the presence of these islands. We study the relation between the (ray-picture originating) island structures and the (wave-picture originating) spectral properties of resonances, especially the leakiness of the resonances which is represented as the imaginary part of the complex wave vector.

Coupled non-identical microdisks: avoided crossing of energy levels and unidirectional far-field emission

We investigate two coupled microdisks with non-identical radii focusing on the parametric evolution of energy levels and the unidirectional far-field emission. We show that the evolution of energy levels is characterized by the avoided crossing intrinsically associated with the exceptional point or the non-Hermitian degeneracy. These spectral properties explain highly asymmetric near-field intensity pattern of the resonance mode. The observed unidirectional far-field emission is shown to be understood by considering the forbidden inter-disk coupling in the ray picture induced by the frustrated total internal reflection near the closest point between two disks when the inter-disk distance is small enough.
