Bose-Einstein condensate confined in a 1D ring stirred with a rotating delta link

We consider a Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive interactions confined in a 1D ring where a Dirac delta is rotating at constant speed. The spectrum of stationary solutions in the delta comoving frame is analyzed in terms of the nonlinear coupling, delta velocity, and delta strength, which may take positive and negative values. It is organized into a set of energy levels conforming a multiple swallowtail structure in parameter space, consisting in bright solitons, gray and dark solitonic trains, and vortices. Analytical expressions in terms Jacobi elliptic functions are provided for the wave functions and chemical potentials. We compute the critical velocities and perform a Bogoliubov analysis for the ground state and first few excited levels, establishing possible adiabatic transitions between the stationary and stable solutions. A set of adiabatic cycles is proposed in which gray solitons and vortices of arbitrary quantized angular momenta are obtained from the ground state by setting and unsetting a rotating delta.

Generating nonequilibrium stationary state from ground state condensate through an almost-adiabatic cycle

It is shown that the ground state of weakly interacting Bose particles in a quasi one-dimensional box trap can be converted into an excited stationary state by an adiabatic cyclic operation that involves a quench of interaction strength: A sharp impurity potential is applied and its strength is varied during the cycle, which induces a nonequilibrium stationary state exhibiting the inversion of population. This process is robust in the sense that the resultant stationary state is almost independent of the details of the cycle, such as the position of the impurity as long as the cycle is far enough from critical regions. The case of the failure of the population inversion due to the strong interparticle interactions is also examined.

One dimensional Hydrogen problem with general connection condition at the origin and non-Rydberg spectra

We consider the solution of the quantum Coulomb problem in one dimension with the most general connection condition at the origin. The divergence of the derivative of the wave function at the origin invalidates the standard current conservation approach. We explore two approaches, Wronskian self-adjoint extension method and cutoff regularization method, and establish their mutual relations, thereby clarifying the physical contents of the connection parameters. We show how to realize exotic non-Loudon connection conditions, entailing the realization of non-Rydberg spectrum.

Complete population inversion of Bose particles by an adiabatic cycle

We show that an adiabatic cycle excites Bose particles confined in a one-dimensional box. During the adiabatic cycle, a wall described by a $δ$-shaped potential is applied and its strength and position are slowly varied. When the system is initially prepared in the ground state, namely, in the zero-temperature equilibrium state, the adiabatic cycle brings all bosons into the first excited one-particle state, leaving the system in a nonequilibrium state. The absorbed energy during the cycle is proportional to the number of bosons.

Spiral orbits and oscillations in historical evolution of empires

We introduce the concept of metaasabiya, the second non-material resource, to the asabiya theory of historical dynamics. We find that the resulting three variable dynamical system has peculiar features such as repelling or attracting axes and spiralling orbits in the phase space. Depending on the initial state, the system can go through series of oscillatory rises and falls, mimicking the geopolitical evolution of real-world polities. These distinctive features, absent in conventional Lotka-Volterra type biological systems, reveal the hidden richness inherent in the asabiya theory.

A topological formulation for exotic quantum holonomy

An adiabatic change of parameters along a closed path may interchange the (quasi-)eigenenergies and eigenspaces of a closed quantum system. Such discrepancies induced by adiabatic cycles are refereed to as the exotic quantum holonomy, which is an extension of the geometric phase. "Small" adiabatic cycles induce no change on eigenspaces, whereas some "large" adiabatic cycles interchange eigenspaces. We explain the topological formulation for the eigenspace anholonomy, where the homotopy equivalence precisely distinguishes the larger cycles from smaller ones. An application to two level systems is explained. We also examine the cycles that involve the adiabatic evolution across an exact crossing, and the diabatic evolution across an avoided crossing. The latter is a nonadiabatic example of the exotic quantum holonomy.

Asymmetric quantum transport in a double-stranded Kronig-Penney model

We introduce a double-stranded Kronig-Penney model and analyze its transport properties. The asymmetric fluxes between two strands with suddenly alternating localization patterns are found as the energy is varied. The zero-size limit of the internal lines connecting two strands is examined using quantum graph vertices with four edges. We also consider a two-dimensional Kronig-Penney lattice with two types of alternating layers with $δ$ and $δ'$ connections, and show that the existence of energy bands in which the quantum flux can flow only in selected directions.

Balancer effects in opinion dynamics

We introduce a novel type of contrarian agent, the balancer, to Galam model of opinion dynamics, in order to account for the existence of social skepticism over one-sidedness. We find that the inclusion of balancers, along with majoritarian floaters and single-sided inflexibles, brings about the emergence of a critical point on parametric plane of the dynamical system. Around the critical point, three distinct phases of opinion dynamics separated by discontinuous changes are found.

Bloch vector, disclination and exotic quantum holonomy

A topological formulation of the eigenspace anholonomy, where eigenspaces are interchanged by adiabatic cycles, is introduced. The anholonomy in two-level systems is identified with a disclination of the director (headless vector) of a Bloch vector, which characterizes eigenprojectors. The covering map structure behind the exotic quantum holonomy and the role of the homotopy classification of adiabatic cycles are elucidated. The extensions of this formulation to nonadiabatic cycles and N-level systems are outlined.

Hermitian unitary matrices with modular permutation symmetry

We study Hermitian unitary matrices $\mathcal{S}\in\mathbb{C}^{n,n}$ with the following property: There exist $r\geq0$ and $t>0$ such that the entries of $\mathcal{S}$ satisfy $|\mathcal{S}_{jj}|=r$ and $|\mathcal{S}_{jk}|=t$ for all $j,k=1,\ldots,n$, $j\neq k$. We derive necessary conditions on the ratio $d:=r/t$ and show that these conditions are very restrictive except for the case when $n$ is even and the sum of the diagonal elements of $§$ is zero. Examples of families of matrices $\mathcal{S}$ are constructed for $d$ belonging to certain intervals. The case of real matrices $\mathcal{S}$ is examined in more detail. It is demonstrated that a real $\mathcal{S}$ can exist only for $d=\frac{n}{2}-1$, or for $n$ even and $\frac{n}{2}+d\equiv1\pmod 2$. We provide a detailed description of the structure of real $\mathcal{S}$ with $d\geq\frac{n}{4}-\frac{3}{2}$, and derive a sufficient and necessary condition of their existence in terms of the existence of certain symmetric $(v,k,λ)$-designs. We prove that there exist no real $\mathcal{S}$ with $d\in\left(\frac{n}{6}-1,\frac{n}{4}-\frac{3}{2}\right)$. A parametrization of Hermitian unitary matrices is also proposed, and its generalization to general unitary matrices is given. At the end of the paper, the role of the studied matrices in quantum mechanics on graphs is briefly explained.

Exotic quantum holonomy and higher-order exceptional points in quantum kicked tops

The correspondence between exotic quantum holonomy that occurs in families of Hermitian cycles, and exceptional points (EPs) for non-Hermitian quantum theory is examined in quantum kicked tops. Under a suitable condition, an explicit expressions of the adiabatic parameter dependencies of quasienergies and stationary states, which exhibit anholonomies, are obtained. It is also shown that the quantum kicked tops with the complexified adiabatic parameter have a higher order EP, which is broken into lower order EPs with the application of small perturbations. The stability of exotic holonomy against such bifurcation is demonstrated.

Quantum graph vertices with minimal number of passbands

We study a set of scattering matrices of quantum graphs containing minimal number of passbands, i.e., maximal number of zero elements. The cases of even and odd vertex degree are considered. Using a solution of inverse scattering problem, we reconstruct boundary conditions of scale-invariant vertex couplings. Potential-controlled universal flat filtering properties are found for considered types of vertex couplings. Obtained boundary conditions are approximated by simple graphs carrying only $δ$ potentials and inner magnetic field.

Exotic quantum holonomy and non-Hermitian degeneracies in two-body Lieb-Liniger model

An interplay of an exotic quantum holonomy and exceptional points is examined in one-dimensional Bose systems. The eigenenergy anholonomy, in which Hermitian adiabatic cycle induces nontrivial change in eigenenergies, can be interpreted as a manifestation of eigenenergy's Riemann surface structure, where the branch points are identified as the exceptional points which are degeneracy points in the complexified parameter space. It is also shown that the exceptional points are the divergent points of the non-Abelian gauge connection for the gauge theoretical formulation of the eigenspace anholonomy. This helps us to evaluate anti-path-ordered exponentials of the gauge connection to obtain gauge covariant quantities.

preprint2013arXiv

Quantum anholonomy with topology change

We study a family of closed quantum graphs described by one singular vertex of order n=4. By suitable choice of the parameters specifying the singular vertex, we can construct a closed sequence of paths in the parameter space that physically corresponds to the smooth interpolation of different topologies - a ring, separate two lines, separate two rings, two rings with a contact point. We find that the spectrum of a quantum particle on this family of graphs shows the quantum anholonomy.

Quantum Game Theory Based on the Schmidt Decomposition

We present a novel formulation of quantum game theory based on the Schmidt decomposition, which has the merit that the entanglement of quantum strategies is manifestly quantified. We apply this formulation to 2-player, 2-strategy symmetric games and obtain a complete set of quantum Nash equilibria. Apart from those available with the maximal entanglement, these quantum Nash equilibria are extensions of the Nash equilibria in classical game theory. The phase structure of the equilibria is determined for all values of entanglement, and thereby the possibility of resolving the dilemmas by entanglement in the game of Chicken, the Battle of the Sexes, the Prisoners' Dilemma, and the Stag Hunt, is examined. We find that entanglement transforms these dilemmas with each other but cannot resolve them, except in the Stag Hunt game where the dilemma can be alleviated to a certain degree.

Quantum graph as a quantum spectral filter

We study the transmission of a quantum particle along a straight input--output line to which a graph $Γ$ is attached at a point. In the point of contact we impose a singularity represented by a certain properly chosen scale-invariant coupling with a coupling parameter $α$. We show that the probability of transmission along the line as a function of the particle energy tends to the indicator function of the energy spectrum of $Γ$ as $α\to\infty$. This effect can be used for a spectral analysis of the given graph $Γ$. Its applications include a control of a transmission along the line and spectral filtering. The result is illustrated with an example where $Γ$ is a loop exposed to a magnetic field. Two more quantum devices are designed using other special scale-invariant vertex couplings. They can serve as a band-stop filter and as a spectral separator, respectively.

Quantum holonomy in Lieb-Liniger model

We examine a parametric cycle in the N-body Lieb-Liniger model that starts from the free system and goes through Tonks-Girardeau and super-Tonks-Girardeau regimes and comes back to the free system. We show the existence of exotic quantum holonomy, whose detailed workings are analysed with the specific sample of two- and three body systems. The classification of eigenstates based on clustering structure naturally emerges from the analysis.

Weak value expansion of quantum operators and its application in stochastic matrices

It is shown that any Hermitian operator can be expanded in terms of a set of operators formed from biorthogonal basis, and the expansion coefficients are given as products of weight functions and weak values, shedding a new light on the physical interpretation of the weak value. The utility of our approach is showcased with examples of spin one-half and spin one systems, where irreversible subset of stochastic matrices describing projective measurement on a mixed state is identified.

Gauge invariants of eigenspace and eigenvalue anholonomies: Examples in hierarchical quantum circuits

A set of gauge invariants are identified for the gauge theory of quantum anholonomies, which comprise both the Berry phase and an exotic anholonomy in eigenspaces. We examine these invariants for hierarchical families of quantum circuits whose qubit size can be arbitrarily large. It is also found that a hierarchical family of quantum circuits generally involves an NP-complete problem.

Potential-controlled filtering in quantum star graphs

We study the scattering in a quantum star graph with a Fülöp--Tsutsui coupling in its vertex and with external potentials on the lines. We find certain special couplings for which the probability of the transmission between two given lines of the graph is strongly influenced by the potential applied on another line. On the basis of this phenomenon we design a tunable quantum band-pass spectral filter. The transmission from the input to the output line is governed by a potential added on the controlling line. The strength of the potential directly determines the passband position, which allows to control the filter in a macroscopic manner. Generalization of this concept to quantum devices with multiple controlling lines proves possible. It enables the construction of spectral filters with more controllable parameters or with more operation modes. In particular, we design a band-pass filter with independently adjustable multiple passbands. We also address the problem of the physical realization of Fülöp--Tsutsui couplings and demonstrate that the couplings needed for the construction of the proposed quantum devices can be approximated by simple graphs carrying only $δ$ potentials.

Eigenvalue and eigenspace anholonomies in hierarchical systems

An adiabatic cycle of parameters in a quantum system can yield the quantum anholonomies, nontrivial evolution not just in phase of the states, but also in eigenvalues and eigenstates. Such exotic anholonomies imply that an adiabatic cycle rearranges eigenstates even without spectral degeneracy. We show that an arbitrarily large quantum circuit generated by recursive extension can also exhibit the eigenvalue and eigenspace anholonomies.

Inverse scattering problem for quantum graph vertices

We demonstrate how the inverse scattering problem of a quantum star graph can be solved by means of diagonalization of Hermitian unitary matrix when the vertex coupling is of the scale invariant (or Fülőp-Tsutsui) form. This enables the construction of quantum graphs with desired properties in a tailor-made fashion. The procedure is illustrated on the example of quantum vertices with equal transmission probabilities.

preprint2011arXiv

Quantum graph vertices with permutation-symmetric scattering probabilities

Boundary conditions in quantum graph vertices are generally given in terms of a unitary matrix $U$. Observing that if $U$ has at most two eigenvalues, then the scattering matrix $\mathcal{S}(k)$ of the vertex is a linear combination of the identity matrix and a fixed Hermitian unitary matrix, we construct vertex couplings with this property: For all momenta $k$, the transmission probability from the $j$-th edge to $\ell$-th edge is independent of $(j,\ell)$, and all the reflection probabilities are equal. We classify these couplings according to their scattering properties, which leads to the concept of generalized $δ$ and $δ'$ couplings.

Fulop-Tsutsui interactions on quantum graphs

We examine scale invariant Fulop-Tsutsui couplings in a quantum vertex of a general degree $n$. We demonstrate that essentially same scattering amplitudes as for the free coupling can be achieved for two $(n-1)$-parameter Fulop-Tsutsui subfamilies if $n$ is odd, and for three $(n-1)$-parameter Fulop-Tsutsui subfamilies if $n$ is even. We also work up an approximation scheme for a general Fulop-Tsutsui vertex, using only $n$ $δ$ function potentials.

Quantum anholonomies in time-dependent Aharonov-Bohm rings

Anholonomies in eigenstates are studied through time-dependent variations of a magnetic flux in an Aharonov-Bohm ring. The anholonomies in the eigenenergy and the expectation values of eigenstates are shown to persist beyond the adiabatic regime. The choice of the gauge of the magnetic flux is shown to be crucial to clarify the relationship of these anholonomies to the eigenspace anholonomy, which is described by a non-Abelian connection in the adiabatic limit.

Short-range interaction in three-dimensional quantum mechanics

We show that it is possible to define shape-independent three-dimensional short-range quantum interactions in two parameter form for non-spherical angular momentum channels through double rescaling of potential strength. Unlike the special case of $l=0$, where the zero range limit of the system is renormalizable, the effective ranges diverge for $l /ne 0$ channels, and the system becomes trivial at zero-size limit. It is also shown that the two-parameter representation with finite interaction range is useful in analyzing phase shifts with accuracy and describing resonances in non-spherical scatterings.

preprint2010arXiv

Tripartite connection condition for quantum graph vertex

We discuss formulations of boundary conditions in a quantum graph vertex and demonstrate that the so-called $ST$-form can be further reduced up to a form more effective in certain applications: In particular, in identifying the number of independent parameters for given ranks of two connection matrices, or in calculating the scattering matrix when both matrices are singular. The new form of boundary conditions, called the $PQRS$-form, also gives a natural scheme to design generalized low and high pass quantum filters.

A Unified Theory of Quantum Holonomies

A periodic change of slow environmental parameters of a quantum system induces quantum holonomy. The phase holonomy is a well-known example. Another is a more exotic kind that exhibits eigenvalue and eigenspace holonomies. We introduce a theoretical formulation that describes the phase and eigenspace holonomies on an equal footing. The building block of the theory is a gauge connection for an ordered basis, which is conceptually distinct from Mead-Truhlar-Berry's connection and its Wilczek-Zee extension. A gauge invariant treatment of eigenspace holonomy based on Fujikawa's formalism is developed. Example of adiabatic quantum holonomy, including the exotic kind with spectral degeneracy, are shown.

Approximation of a general singular vertex coupling in quantum graphs

The longstanding open problem of approximating all singular vertex couplings in a quantum graph is solved. We present a construction in which the edges are decoupled; an each pair of their endpoints is joined by an edge carrying a $δ$ potential and a vector potential coupled to the "loose" edges by a $δ$ coupling. It is shown that if the lengths of the connecting edges shrink to zero and the potentials are properly scaled, the limit can yield any prescribed singular vertex coupling, and moreover, that such an approximation converges in the norm-resolvent sense.

preprint2009arXiv

Exotic quantum holonomy induced by degeneracy hidden in complex parameter space

An adiabatic change of a bound state along a closed circuit in the parameter space can induces holonomies not only in the phase of the state, but also in the associated eigenspace and eigenvalue. The former is the well-known Berry phase while the latter, namely the exotic holonomy, is found a decade ago and its origin has not been understood yet. By extending the parameter into the complex number, the correspondence of the exotic holonomies and the degeneracy of the non-Hermitian Hamiltonian, or the exceptional points, is revealed. We show that this explains all the known non-trivial characteristics of the exotic holonomies.

Constructing multi-player quantum games from non-factorizable joint probabilities

We use the standard three-party Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen (EPR) setting in order to play general three-player non-cooperative symmetric games. We analyze how the peculiar non-factorizable joint probabilities that may emerge in the EPR setting can change outcome of the game. Our setup requires that the quantum game attains classical interpretation for factorizable joint probabilities. We analyze the generalized three-player game of Prisoner's Dilemma (PD) and show that the players can indeed escape from the classical outcome of the game because of non-factorizable joint probabilities. This result for three-player PD contrasts strikingly with our earlier result for two-player PD for which even non-factorizable joint probabilities are not found to be helpful to escape from the classical outcome of the game.

Evolutionary stability in quantum games

In evolutionary game theory an Evolutionarily Stable Strategy (ESS) is a refinement of the Nash equilibrium concept that is sometimes also recognized as evolutionary stability. It is a game-theoretic model, well known to mathematical biologists, that was found quite useful in the understanding of evolutionary dynamics of a population. This chapter presents an analysis of evolutionary stability in the emerging field of quantum games.

Classical and Quantum Contents of Solvable Game Theory on Hilbert Space

A simple and general formulation of the quantum game theory is presented, accommodating all possible strategies in the Hilbert space for the first time. The theory is solvable for the two strategy quantum game, which is shown to be equivalent to a family of classical games supplemented by quantum interference. Our formulation gives a clear perspective to understand why and how quantum strategies outmaneuver classical strategies. It also reveals novel aspects of quantum games such as the stone-scissor-paper phase sub-game and the fluctuation-induced moderation.
