Covers of surfaces, Kleinian groups, and the curve complex

We prove an effective version of a theorem relating curve complex distance to electric distance in hyperbolic 3-manifolds, up to errors that are polynomial in the complexity of the underlying surface. We use this to give an effective proof of a result regarding maps between curve complexes of surfaces induced by finite covers. As applications, we effectively relate the electric circumference of a fibered manifold to the curve complex translation length of its monodromy, and we give quantitative bounds on virtual specialness for cube complexes dual to curves on surfaces.

Flows, growth rates, and the veering polynomial

For certain pseudo-Anosov flows $ϕ$ on closed $3$-manifolds, unpublished work of Agol--Guéritaud produces a veering triangulation $τ$ on the manifold $M$ obtained by deleting $ϕ$'s singular orbits. We show that $τ$ can be realized in $M$ so that its 2-skeleton is positively transverse to $ϕ$, and that the combinatorially defined flow graph $Φ$ embedded in $M$ uniformly codes $ϕ$'s orbits in a precise sense. Together with these facts we use a modified version of the veering polynomial, previously introduced by the authors, to compute the growth rates of $ϕ$'s closed orbits after cutting $M$ along certain transverse surfaces, thereby generalizing work of McMullen in the fibered setting. These results are new even in the case where the transverse surface represents a class in the boundary of a fibered cone of $M$. Our work can be used to study the flow $ϕ$ on the original closed manifold. Applications include counting growth rates of closed orbits after cutting along closed transverse surfaces, defining a continuous, convex entropy function on the `positive' cone in $H^1$ of the cut-open manifold, and answering a question of Leininger about the closure of the set of all stretch factors arising as monodromies within a single fibered cone of a $3$-manifold. This last application connects to the study of endperiodic automorphisms of infinite-type surfaces and the growth rates of their periodic points.

A polynomial invariant for veering triangulations

We introduce a polynomial invariant $V_τ\in \mathbb{Z}[H_1(M)/\text{torsion}]$ associated to a veering triangulation $τ$ of a $3$-manifold $M$. In the special case where the triangulation is layered, i.e. comes from a fibration, $V_τ$ recovers the Teichmüller polynomial of the fibered faces canonically associated to $τ$. Via Dehn filling, this gives a combinatorial description of the Teichmüller polynomial for any hyperbolic fibered $3$-manifold. For a general veering triangulation $τ$, we show that the surfaces carried by $τ$ determine a cone in homology that is dual to its cone of positive closed transversals. Moreover, we prove that this is $\textit{equal}$ to the cone over a (generally non-fibered) face of the Thurston norm ball, and that $τ$ computes the norm on this cone in a precise sense. We also give a combinatorial description of $V_τ$ in terms of the $\textit{flow graph}$ for $τ$ and its Perron polynomial. This perspective allows us to characterize when a veering triangulation comes from a fibration, and more generally to compute the face of the Thurston norm determined by $τ$.

Central limit theorems for counting measures in coarse negative curvature

We establish central limit theorems for an action of a group G on a hyperbolic space X with respect to the counting measure on a Cayley graph of G. Our techniques allow us to remove the usual assumptions of properness and smoothness of the space, or cocompactness of the action. We provide several applications which require our general framework, including to lengths of geodesics in geometrically finite manifolds and to intersection numbers with submanifolds.

Weil-Petersson translation length and manifolds with many fibered fillings

We prove that any mapping torus of a pseudo-Anosov mapping class with bounded normalized Weil-Petersson translation length contains a finite set of transverse and level closed curves, and drilling out this set of curves results in one of a finite number of cusped hyperbolic 3-manifolds. The number of manifolds in the finite list depends only on the bound for normalized translation length. We also prove a complementary result that explains the necessity of removing level curves by producing new estimates for the Weil-Petersson translation length of compositions of pseudo-Anosov mapping classes and arbitrary powers of a Dehn twist.

The geometry of purely loxodromic subgroups of right-angled Artin groups

We prove that finitely generated purely loxodromic subgroups of a right-angled Artin group $A(Γ)$ fulfill equivalent conditions that parallel characterizations of convex cocompactness in mapping class groups $\text{Mod}(S)$. In particular, such subgroups are quasiconvex in $A(Γ)$. In addition, we identify a milder condition for a finitely generated subgroup of $A(Γ)$ that guarantees it is free, undistorted, and retains finite generation when intersected with $A(Λ)$ for subgraphs $Λ$ of $Γ$. These results have applications to both the study of convex cocompactness in $\text{Mod}(S)$ and the way in which certain groups can embed in right-angled Artin groups.

Cannon-Thurston maps for hyperbolic free group extensions

This paper gives a detailed analysis of the Cannon--Thurston maps associated to a general class of hyperbolic free group extensions. Let $F_N$ denote a free groups of finite rank $N\ge 3$ and consider a \emph{convex cocompact} subgroup $Γ\le Out(F_N)$, i.e. one for which the orbit map from $Γ$ into the free factor complex of $F_N$ is a quasi-isometric embedding. The subgroup $Γ$ determines an extension $E_Γ$ of $F_N$, and the main theorem of Dowdall--Taylor \cite{DT1} states that in this situation $E_Γ$ is hyperbolic if and only if $Γ$ is purely atoroidal. Here, we give an explicit geometric description of the Cannon--Thurston maps $\partial F_N\to\partial E_Γ$ for these hyperbolic free group extensions, the existence of which follows from a general result of Mitra. In particular, we obtain a uniform bound on the multiplicity of the Cannon--Thurston map, showing that this map has multiplicity at most $2N$. This theorem generalizes the main result of Kapovich and Lustig \cite{KapLusCT} which treats the special case where $Γ$ is infinite cyclic. We also answer a question of Mahan Mitra by producing an explicit example of a hyperbolic free group extension for which the natural map from the boundary of $Γ$ to the space of laminations of the free group (with the Chabauty topology) is not continuous.

Pseudo-Anosovs optimizing the ratio of Teichmüller to curve graph translation length

Given $ϕ$ a pseudo-Anosov map, let $\ell_\mathcal{T}(ϕ)$ denote the translation length of $ϕ$ in the Teichmüller space, and let $\ell_\mathcal{C}(ϕ)$ denote the stable translation length of $ϕ$ in the curve graph. Gadre--Hironaka--Kent--Leininger showed that, as a function of Euler characteristic $χ(S)$, the minimal possible ratio $τ(ϕ) = \frac{\ell_\mathcal{T}(ϕ)}{\ell_\mathcal{C}(ϕ)}$ is $\log(|χ(S)|)$, up to uniform additive and multiplicative constants. In this short note, we introduce a new construction of such ratio optimizers and demonstrate their abundance in the mapping class group. Further, we show that ratio optimizers can be found arbitrarily deep into the Johnson filtration as well as in the point pushing subgroup.

Random extensions of free groups and surface groups are hyperbolic

In this note, we prove that a random extension of either the free group $F_N$ of rank $N\ge3$ or of the fundamental group of a closed, orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g\ge2$ is a hyperbolic group. Here, a random extension is one corresponding to a subgroup of either Out$(F_N)$ or Mod$(S_g)$ generated by $k$ independent random walks. Our main theorem has several applications, including that a random subgroup of a weakly hyperbolic group is free and undistorted.

Convex cocompactness and stability in mapping class groups

We introduce a strong notion of quasiconvexity in finitely generated groups, which we call stability. Stability agrees with quasiconvexity in hyperbolic groups and is preserved under quasi-isometry for finitely generated groups. We show that the stable subgroups of mapping class groups are precisely the convex cocompact subgroups. This generalizes a well-known result of Behrstock and is related to questions asked by Farb-Mosher and Farb.

Products of Farey graphs are totally geodesic in the pants graph

We show that for a surface S, the subgraph of the pants graph determined by fixing a collection of curves that cut S into pairs of pants, once-punctured tori, and four-times-punctured spheres is totally geodesic. The main theorem resolves a special case of a conjecture made by Aramayona, Parlier, and Shackleton and has the implication that an embedded product of Farey graphs in any pants graph is totally geodesic. In addition, we show that a pants graph contains a convex n-flat if and only if it contains an n-quasi-flat.

A note on subfactor projections

We extend some results of [BF12] on subfactor projections to show that the projection of a free factor B to the free factor complex of the free factor A is well-defined with uniformly bound diameter, unless either A is contained in B or A and B are vertex stabilizers of a single splitting of F_n, i.e. they are disjoint. These projections are shown to satisfy properties analogous to subsurface projections, and we give as an application a construction of fully irreducible outer automorphisms using the Bounded Geodesic Image Theorem.

Right-angled Artin groups and Out(F_n) I: quasi-isometric embeddings

We construct quasi-isometric embeddings from right-angled Artin groups into the outer automorphism group of a free group. These homomorphisms are in analogy with those constructed in \cite{CLM}, where the target group is the mapping class group of a surface. Toward this goal, we develop tools in the free group setting that mirror those for surface groups as well as discuss various analogs of subsurface projection; these may be of independent interest.
