Sublinearly Morse Boundary I: CAT(0) Spaces

To every Gromov hyperbolic space X one can associate a space at infinity called the Gromov boundary of X. Gromov showed that quasi-isometries of hyperbolic metric spaces induce homeomorphisms on their boundaries, thus giving rise to a well-defined notion of the boundary of a hyperbolic group. Croke and Kleiner showed that the visual boundary of non-positively curved (CAT(0)) groups is not well-defined, since quasi-isometric CAT(0) spaces can have non-homeomorphic boundaries. For any sublinear function $κ$, we consider a subset of the visual boundary called the $κ$-Morse boundary and show that it is QI-invariant and metrizable. This is to say, the $κ$-Morse boundary of a CAT(0) group is well-defined. In the case of Right-angled Artin groups, it is shown in the Appendix that the Poisson boundary of random walks is naturally identified with the $\sqrt{t \log t}$--boundary.

Cusp excursion in hyperbolic manifolds and singularity of harmonic measure

We generalize the notion of cusp excursion of geodesic rays by introducing for any $k \geq 1$ the $k^{th}$ excursion in the cusps of a hyperbolic $N$-manifold of finite volume. We show that on one hand, this excursion is at most linear for geodesics that are generic with respect to the hitting measure of a random walk. On the other hand, for $k = N-1$, the $k^{th}$ excursion is superlinear for geodesics that are generic with respect to the Lebesgue measure. We use this to show that the hitting measure and the Lebesgue measure on the boundary of hyperbolic space $\mathbb{H}^N$ for any $N \geq 2$ are mutually singular.

Random walks, WPD actions, and the Cremona group

We study random walks on groups of isometries of non-proper delta-hyperbolic spaces under the assumption that at least one element in the group satisfies Bestvina-Fujiwara's WPD condition. We show that in this case typical elements are WPD, and the Poisson boundary coincides with the Gromov boundary. Moreover, we show that the random walk satisfies a form of asymptotic acylindricality, and we use this to show that the normal closure of random elements yields almost surely infinitely many different normal subgroups. Moreover, the probability that the normal closure is free tends to 1 if and only if the maximal normal subgroup coincides with the center of the group. We apply such techniques to the Cremona group, thus obtaining that the dynamical degree of random Cremona transformations grows exponentially fast, producing many different normal subgroups, and identifying the Poisson boundary. We also give a new identification of the Poisson boundary of Out(F_n). Our methods give bounds on the rates of convergence for these results.

Central limit theorems for counting measures in coarse negative curvature

We establish central limit theorems for an action of a group G on a hyperbolic space X with respect to the counting measure on a Cayley graph of G. Our techniques allow us to remove the usual assumptions of properness and smoothness of the space, or cocompactness of the action. We provide several applications which require our general framework, including to lengths of geodesics in geometrically finite manifolds and to intersection numbers with submanifolds.

Shannon's theorem for locally compact groups

We consider random walks on locally compact groups, extending the geometric criteria for the identification of their Poisson boundary previously known for discrete groups. First, we prove a version of the Shannon-McMillan-Breiman theorem, which we then use to generalize Kaimanovich's ray approximation and strip approximation criteria. We give several applications to identify the Poisson boundary of locally compact groups which act by isometries on nonpositively curved spaces, as well as on Diestel-Leader graphs and horocylic products.

Generalised continuation by means of right limits

Several theories have been proposed to generalise the concept of analytic continuation to holomorphic functions of the disc for which the circle is a natural boundary. Elaborating on Breuer-Simon's work on "right limits" of power series, Baladi-Marmi-Sauzin recently introduced the notion of "renascent right limit" and "rrl-continuation". We discuss a few examples and consider particularly the classical example of "Poincar{é} simple pole series" in this light. These functions are represented in the disc as series of infinitely many simple poles located on the circle; they appear for instance in small divisor problems in dynamics. We prove that any such function admits a unique rrl-continuation, which coincides with the function obtained outside the disc by summing the simple pole expansion. We also discuss the relation with monogenic regularity in the sense of Borel.

Random extensions of free groups and surface groups are hyperbolic

In this note, we prove that a random extension of either the free group $F_N$ of rank $N\ge3$ or of the fundamental group of a closed, orientable surface $S_g$ of genus $g\ge2$ is a hyperbolic group. Here, a random extension is one corresponding to a subgroup of either Out$(F_N)$ or Mod$(S_g)$ generated by $k$ independent random walks. Our main theorem has several applications, including that a random subgroup of a weakly hyperbolic group is free and undistorted.

Random walks on weakly hyperbolic groups

Let G be a countable group which acts by isometries on a separable, but not necessarily proper, Gromov hyperbolic space X. We say the action of G is weakly hyperbolic if G contains two independent hyperbolic isometries. We show that a random walk on such G converges to the Gromov boundary almost surely. We apply the convergence result to show linear progress and linear growth of translation length, without any assumptions on the moments of the random walk. If the action is acylindrical, and the random walk has finite entropy and finite logarithmic moment, we show that the Gromov boundary with the hitting measure is the Poisson boundary.

The local Hoelder exponent for the dimension of invariant subsets of the circle

We consider for each t the set K(t) of points of the circle whose forward orbit for the doubling map does not intersect (0,t), and look at the dimension function eta(t) := H.dim K(t). We prove that at every bifurcation parameter t, the local Hoelder exponent of the dimension function equals the value of the function eta(t) itself. The same statement holds by replacing the doubling map with the map g(x) := dx mod 1 for d >2.

Continuity of core entropy of quadratic polynomials

The core entropy of polynomials, recently introduced by W. Thurston, is a dynamical invariant which can be defined purely in combinatorial terms, and provides a useful tool to study parameter spaces of polynomials. The theory of core entropy extends to complex polynomials the entropy theory for real unimodal maps: the real segment is replaced by an invariant tree, known as Hubbard tree, which lives inside the filled Julia set. We prove that the core entropy of quadratic polynomials varies continuously as a function of the external angle, answering a question of Thurston.

Word length statistics for Teichmüller geodesics and singularity of harmonic measure

Given a measure on the Thurston boundary of Teichmueller space, one can pick a geodesic ray joining some basepoint to a randomly chosen point on the boundary. Different choices of measures may yield typical geodesics with different geometric properties. In particular, we consider two families of measures: the ones which belong to the Lebesgue or visual measure class, and harmonic measures for random walks on the mapping class group generated by a distribution with finite first moment in the word metric. We consider the ratio between the word metric and the relative metric of approximating mapping class group elements along a geodesic ray, and prove that this ratio tends to infinity along almost all geodesics with respect to Lebesgue measure, while the limit is finite along almost all geodesics with respect to harmonic measure. As a corollary, we establish singularity of harmonic measure. We show the same result for cofinite volume Fuchsian groups with cusps. As an application, we answer a question of Deroin-Kleptsyn-Navas about the vanishing of the Lyapunov expansion exponent.

Continued fractions with SL(2, Z)-branches: combinatorics and entropy

We study the dynamics of a family K_alpha of discontinuous interval maps whose (infinitely many) branches are Moebius transformations in SL(2, Z), and which arise as the critical-line case of the family of (a, b)-continued fractions. We provide an explicit construction of the bifurcation locus E_KU for this family, showing it is parametrized by Farey words and it has Hausdorff dimension zero. As a consequence, we prove that the metric entropy of K_alpha is analytic outside the bifurcation set but not differentiable at points of E_KU, and that the entropy is monotone as a function of the parameter. Finally, we prove that the bifurcation set is combinatorially isomorphic to the main cardioid in the Mandelbrot set, providing one more entry to the dictionary developed by the authors between continued fractions and complex dynamics.

Topological entropy of quadratic polynomials and dimension of sections of the Mandelbrot set

Let c be a real parameter in the Mandelbrot set, and f_c(z):= z^2 + c. We prove a formula relating the topological entropy of f_c to the Hausdorff dimension of the set of rays landing on the real Julia set, and to the Hausdorff dimension of the set of rays landing on the real section of the Mandelbrot set, to the right of the given parameter c. We then generalize the result by looking at the entropy of Hubbard trees: namely, we relate the Hausdorff dimension of the set of external angles which land on a certain slice of a principal vein in the Mandelbrot set to the topological entropy of the quadratic polynomial f_c restricted to its Hubbard tree.

Dynamics of continued fractions and kneading sequences of unimodal maps

In this paper we construct a correspondence between the parameter spaces of two families of one-dimensional dynamical systems, the alpha-continued fraction transformations T_alpha and unimodal maps. This correspondence identifies bifurcation parameters in the two families, and allows one to transfer topological and metric properties from one setting to the other. As an application, we recover results about the real slice of the Mandelbrot set, and the set of univoque numbers.

Tuning and plateaux for the entropy of $α$-continued fractions

The entropy $h(T_α)$ of $α$-continued fraction transformations is known to be locally monotone outside a closed, totally disconnected set $\EE$. We will exploit the explicit description of the fractal structure of $\EE$ to investigate the self-similarities displayed by the graph of the function $α\mapsto h(T_α)$. Finally, we completely characterize the plateaux occurring in this graph, and classify the local monotonic behaviour.

The entropy of alpha-continued fractions: analytical results

We study the ergodic theory of a one-parameter family of interval maps T_alpha arising from generalized continued fraction algorithms. First of all, we prove the dependence of the metric entropy of T_alpha to be Hoelder-continuous in the parameter alpha. Moreover, we prove a central limit theorem for possibly unbounded observables whose bounded variation grows moderately. This class of functions is large enough to cover the case of Birkhoff averages converging to the entropy.

The entropy of alpha-continued fractions: numerical results

We consider the one-parameter family of interval maps arising from generalized continued fraction expansions known as alpha-continued fractions. For such maps, we perform a numerical study of the behaviour of metric entropy as a function of the parameter. The behaviour of entropy is known to be quite regular for parameters for which a matching condition on the orbits of the endpoints holds. We give a detailed description of the set M where this condition is met: it consists of a countable union of open intervals, corresponding to different combinatorial data, which appear to be arranged in a hierarchical structure. Our experimental data suggest that the complement of M is a proper subset of the set of bounded-type numbers, hence it has measure zero. Furthermore, we give evidence that the entropy on matching intervals is smooth; on the other hand, we can construct points outside of M on which it is not even locally monotone.
