Completeness and reflexivity type properties of $B_1(X)$

For a Tychonoff space $X$, $B_1(X)$ denotes the space of all Baire-one functions on $X$ endowed with the pointwise topology. We prove that the following assertions are equivalent: (1) $B_1(X)$ is a (semi-)Montel space, (2) $B_1(X)$ is a (semi-)reflexive space, (3) $B_1(X)$ is a (quasi-)complete space, (4) $B_1(X)=\mathbb{R}^X$, (5) $X$ is a $Q_f$-space. It is proved that $B_1(X)$ is sequentially complete iff $B_1(X)$ is locally complete iff $X$ is a $CZ$-space. In the case when $K$ is a compact space, we show that $B_1(K)$ is locally complete iff $K$ is scattered. We thoroughly study the case when $X$ is a separable metrizable space. Numerous distinguished examples are given.

Compatible group topologies on a locally quasi-convex abelian group and the Mackey group problem

For a locally quasi-convex (lqc) abelian group $G$, we give the first description of all compatible group topologies on $G$ and apply this result to the Mackey group problem for lqc groups. We characterize lqc abelian groups which are Mackey groups or admit a Mackey group topology and provide a characterization of two Mackey groups whose product is Mackey. We obtain the first characterization of locally convex spaces which are Mackey groups.

Ascoli and sequentially Ascoli spaces

A Tychonoff space $X$ is called ({\em sequentially}) {\em Ascoli} if every compact subset (resp. convergent sequence) of $C_k(X)$ is evenly continuous, where $C_k(X)$ denotes the space of all real-valued continuous functions on $X$ endowed with the compact-open topology. Various properties of (sequentially) Ascoli spaces are studied, and we give several characterizations of sequentially Ascoli spaces. Strengthening a result of Arhangel'skii we show that a hereditary Ascoli space is Fréchet--Urysohn. A locally compact abelian group $G$ with the Bohr topology is sequentially Ascoli iff $G$ is compact. If $X$ is totally countably compact or near sequentially compact then it is a sequentially Ascoli space. The product of a locally compact space and an Ascoli space is Ascoli. If additionally $X$ is a $μ$-space, then $X$ is locally compact iff the product of $X$ with any Ascoli space is an Ascoli space. Extending one of the main results of [18] and [16] we show that $C_p(X)$ is sequentially Ascoli iff $X$ has the property $(κ)$. We give a necessary condition on $X$ for which the space $C_k(X)$ is sequentially Ascoli. For every metrizable abelian group $Y$, $Y$-Tychonoff space $X$, and nonzero countable ordinal $α$, the space $B_α(X,Y)$ of Baire-$α$ functions from $X$ to $Y$ is $κ$-Fréchet--Urysohn and hence Ascoli.

Ascoli's theorem for pseudocompact spaces

A Tychonoff space $X$ is called ({\em sequentially}) {\em Ascoli} if every compact subset (resp. convergent sequence) of $C_k(X)$ is equicontinuous, where $C_k(X)$ denotes the space of all real-valued continuous functions on $X$ endowed with the compact-open topology. The classical Ascoli theorem states that each compact space is Ascoli. We show that a pseudocompact space $X$ is Asoli iff it is sequentially Ascoli iff it is selectively $ω$-bounded.

Topological properties of some function spaces

Let $Y$ be a metrizable space containing at least two points, and let $X$ be a $Y_{\mathcal{I}}$-Tychonoff space for some ideal $\mathcal{I}$ of compact sets of $X$. Denote by $C_{\mathcal{I}}(X,Y)$ the space of continuous functions from $X$ to $Y$ endowed with the $\mathcal{I}$-open topology. We prove that $C_{\mathcal{I}}(X,Y)$ is Fréchet - Urysohn iff $X$ has the property $γ_{\mathcal{I}}$. We characterize zero - dimensional Tychonoff spaces $X$ for which the space $C_{\mathcal{I}}(X,{\bf 2})$ is sequential. Extending the classical theorems of Gerlits, Nagy and Pytkeev we show that if $Y$ is not compact, then $C_{p}(X,Y)$ is Fréchet - Urysohn iff it is sequential iff it is a $k$-space iff $X$ has the property $γ$. An analogous result is obtained for the space of bounded continuous functions taking values in a metrizable locally convex space. Denote by $B_{1}(X,Y)$ and $B(X,Y)$ the space of Baire one functions and the space of all Baire functions from $X$ to $Y$, respectively. If $H$ is a subspace of $B(X,Y)$ containing $B_{1}(X,Y)$, then $H$ is metrizable iff it is a $σ$ - space iff it has countable $cs^*$ - character iff $X$ is countable. If additionally $Y$ is not compact, then $H$ is Fréchet - Urysohn iff it is sequential iff it is a $k$ - space iff it has countable tightness iff $X_{\aleph_0}$ has the property $γ$, where $X_{\aleph_0}$ is the space $X$ with the Baire topology. We show that if $X$ is a Polish space, then the space $B_{1}(X,\mathbb{R})$ is normal iff $X$ is countable.

Free locally convex spaces with a small base

The paper studies the free locally convex space $L(X)$ over a Tychonoff space $X$. Since for infinite $X$ the space $L(X)$ is never metrizable (even not Fréchet-Urysohn), a possible applicable generalized metric property for $L(X)$ is welcome. We propose a concept (essentially weaker than first-countability) which is known under the name a $\mathfrak{G}$-base. A space $X$ has a {\em $\mathfrak{G}$-base} if for every $x\in X$ there is a base $\{ U_α: α\in\mathbb{N}^\mathbb{N}\}$ of neighborhoods at $x$ such that $U_β\subseteq U_α$ whenever $α\leqβ$ for all $α,β\in\mathbb{N}^\mathbb{N}$, where $α=(α(n))_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\leq β=(β(n))_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ if $α(n)\leqβ(n)$ for all $n\in\mathbb{N}$. We show that if $X$ is an Ascoli $σ$-compact space, then $L(X)$ has a $\mathfrak{G}$-base if and only if $X$ admits an Ascoli uniformity $\mathcal{U}$ with a $\mathfrak{G}$-base. We prove that if $X$ is a $σ$-compact Ascoli space of $\mathbb{N}^\mathbb{N}$-uniformly compact type, then $L(X)$ has a $\mathfrak{G}$-base. As an application we show: (1) if $X$ is a metrizable space, then $L(X)$ has a $\mathfrak{G}$-base if and only if $X$ is $σ$-compact, and (2) if $X$ is a countable Ascoli space, then $L(X)$ has a $\mathfrak{G}$-base if and only if $X$ has a $\mathfrak{G}$-base.

On the $C_k$-stable closure of the class of (separable) metrizable spaces

Denote by $\mathbf C_k[\mathfrak M]$ the $C_k$-stable closure of the class $\mathfrak M$ of all metrizable spaces, i.e., $\mathbf C_k[\mathfrak M]$ is the smallest class of topological spaces that contains $\mathfrak M$ and is closed under taking subspaces, homeomorphic images, countable topological sums, countable Tychonoff products, and function spaces $C_k(X,Y)$ with Lindelöf domain. We show that the class $\mathbf C_k[\mathfrak M]$ coincides with the class of all topological spaces homeomorphic to subspaces of the function spaces $C_k(X,Y)$ with a separable metrizable space $X$ and a metrizable space $Y$. We say that a topological space $Z$ is Ascoli if every compact subset of $C_k(Z)$ is evenly continuous; by the Ascoli Theorem, each $k$-space is Ascoli. We prove that the class $\mathbf C_k[\mathfrak M]$ properly contains the class of all Ascoli $\aleph_0$-spaces and is properly contained in the class of $\mathfrak P$-spaces, recently introduced by Gabriyelyan and Kąkol. Consequently, an Ascoli space $Z$ embeds into the function space $C_k(X,Y)$ for suitable separable metrizable spaces $X$ and $Y$ if and only if $Z$ is an $\aleph_0$-space.

The Ascoli property for function spaces

The paper deals with Ascoli spaces $C_p(X)$ and $C_k(X)$ over Tychonoff spaces $X$. The class of Ascoli spaces $X$, i.e. spaces $X$ for which any compact subset $K$ of $C_k(X)$ is evenly continuous, essentially includes the class of $k_{\mathbb R}$-spaces. First we prove that if $C_p(X)$ is Ascoli, then it is $κ$-Fréchet-Urysohn. If $X$ is cosmic, then $C_p(X)$ is Ascoli iff it is $κ$-Fr'echet-Urysohn. This leads to the following extension of a result of Morishita: If for a Čech-complete space $X$ the space $C_p(X)$ is Ascoli, then $X$ is scattered. If $X$ is scattered and stratifiable, then $C_p(X)$ is an Ascoli space. Consequently: (a) If $X$ is a complete metrizable space, then $C_p(X)$ is Ascoli iff $X$ is scattered. (b) If $X$ is a Čech-complete Lindelöf space, then $C_p(X)$ is Ascoli iff $X$ is scattered iff $C_p(X)$ is Fréchet-Urysohn. Moreover, we prove that for a paracompact space $X$ of point-countable type the following conditions are equivalent: (i) $X$ is locally compact. (ii) $C_k(X)$ is a $k_{\mathbb R}$-space. (iii) $C_k(X)$ is an Ascoli space. The Asoli spaces $C_k(X,[0,1])$ are also studied.

Topological properties of function spaces over ordinals

A topological space $X$ is said to be an Ascoli space if any compact subset $K$ of $C_k(X)$ is evenly continuous. This definition is motivated by the classical Ascoli theorem. We study the $k_R$-property and the Ascoli property of $C_p(κ)$ and $C_k(κ)$ over ordinals $κ$. We prove that $C_p(κ)$ is always an Ascoli space, while $C_p(κ)$ is a $k_R$-space iff the cofinality of $κ$ is countable. In particular, this provides the first $C_p$-example of an Ascoli space which is not a $k_R$-space, namely $C_p(ω_1)$. We show that $C_k(κ)$ is Ascoli iff $cf(κ)$ is countable iff $C_k(κ)$ is metrizable.

On topological properties of the weak topology of a Banach space

Being motivated by the famous Kaplansky theorem we study various sequential properties of a Banach space $E$ and its closed unit ball $B$, both endowed with the weak topology of $E$. We show that $B$ has the Pytkeev property if and only if $E$ in the norm topology contains no isomorphic copy of $\ell_1$, while $E$ has the Pytkeev property if and only if it is finite-dimensional. We extend Schlüchtermann and Wheeler's result by showing that $B$ is a (separable) metrizable space if and only if it has countable $cs^\ast$-character and is a $k$-space. As a corollary we obtain that $B$ is Polish if and only if it has countable $cs^\ast$-character and is Čech-complete, that supplements a result of Edgar and Wheeler.
