When is a locally convex space Eberlein-Grothendieck?

In this paper we undertake a systematic study of those locally convex spaces EE such that (E,w)(E, w) is (linearly) Eberlein-Grothendieck, where ww is the weak topology of EE. Let Ck(X)C_{k}(X) be the space of continuous real-valued functions on a Tychonoff space XX endowed with the compact-open topology. The main results of our paper are: (1) For a first-countable space XX (in particular, for a metrizable XX) the locally convex space (Ck(X),w)(C_{k}(X), w) is Eberlein-Grothendieck if and only if XX is both σσ-compact and locally compact; (2) (Ck(X),w)(C_{k}(X), w) is linearly Eberlein-Grothendieck if and only if XX is compact. We characterize EE such that (E,w)(E, w) is linearly Eberlein-Grothendieck for several other important classes of locally convex spaces EE. Also, we show that the class of EE for which (E,w)(E, w) is linearly Eberlein-Grothendieck preserves linear continuous quotients. Various illustrating examples are provided.

Free locally convex spaces with a small base

The paper studies the free locally convex space L(X)L(X) over a Tychonoff space XX. Since for infinite XX the space L(X)L(X) is never metrizable (even not Fréchet-Urysohn), a possible applicable generalized metric property for L(X)L(X) is welcome. We propose a concept (essentially weaker than first-countability) which is known under the name a G\mathfrak{G}-base. A space XX has a {\em G\mathfrak{G}-base} if for every x∈Xx\in X there is a base {Uα:α∈NN}\{ U_α: α\in\mathbb{N}^\mathbb{N}\} of neighborhoods at xx such that Uβ⊆UαU_β\subseteq U_α whenever α≤βα\leqβ for all α,β∈NNα,β\in\mathbb{N}^\mathbb{N}, where α=(α(n))n∈N≤β=(β(n))n∈Nα=(α(n))_{n\in\mathbb{N}}\leq β=(β(n))_{n\in\mathbb{N}} if α(n)≤β(n)α(n)\leqβ(n) for all n∈Nn\in\mathbb{N}. We show that if XX is an Ascoli σσ-compact space, then L(X)L(X) has a G\mathfrak{G}-base if and only if XX admits an Ascoli uniformity U\mathcal{U} with a G\mathfrak{G}-base. We prove that if XX is a σσ-compact Ascoli space of NN\mathbb{N}^\mathbb{N}-uniformly compact type, then L(X)L(X) has a G\mathfrak{G}-base. As an application we show: (1) if XX is a metrizable space, then L(X)L(X) has a G\mathfrak{G}-base if and only if XX is σσ-compact, and (2) if XX is a countable Ascoli space, then L(X)L(X) has a G\mathfrak{G}-base if and only if XX has a G\mathfrak{G}-base.

The Ascoli property for function spaces

The paper deals with Ascoli spaces Cp(X)C_p(X) and Ck(X)C_k(X) over Tychonoff spaces XX. The class of Ascoli spaces XX, i.e. spaces XX for which any compact subset KK of Ck(X)C_k(X) is evenly continuous, essentially includes the class of kRk_{\mathbb R}-spaces. First we prove that if Cp(X)C_p(X) is Ascoli, then it is κκ-Fréchet-Urysohn. If XX is cosmic, then Cp(X)C_p(X) is Ascoli iff it is κκ-Fr'echet-Urysohn. This leads to the following extension of a result of Morishita: If for a Čech-complete space XX the space Cp(X)C_p(X) is Ascoli, then XX is scattered. If XX is scattered and stratifiable, then Cp(X)C_p(X) is an Ascoli space. Consequently: (a) If XX is a complete metrizable space, then Cp(X)C_p(X) is Ascoli iff XX is scattered. (b) If XX is a Čech-complete Lindelöf space, then Cp(X)C_p(X) is Ascoli iff XX is scattered iff Cp(X)C_p(X) is Fréchet-Urysohn. Moreover, we prove that for a paracompact space XX of point-countable type the following conditions are equivalent: (i) XX is locally compact. (ii) Ck(X)C_k(X) is a kRk_{\mathbb R}-space. (iii) Ck(X)C_k(X) is an Ascoli space. The Asoli spaces Ck(X,[0,1])C_k(X,[0,1]) are also studied.

Topological properties of function spaces over ordinals

A topological space XX is said to be an Ascoli space if any compact subset KK of Ck(X)C_k(X) is evenly continuous. This definition is motivated by the classical Ascoli theorem. We study the kRk_R-property and the Ascoli property of Cp(κ)C_p(κ) and Ck(κ)C_k(κ) over ordinals κκ. We prove that Cp(κ)C_p(κ) is always an Ascoli space, while Cp(κ)C_p(κ) is a kRk_R-space iff the cofinality of κκ is countable. In particular, this provides the first CpC_p-example of an Ascoli space which is not a kRk_R-space, namely Cp(ω1)C_p(ω_1). We show that Ck(κ)C_k(κ) is Ascoli iff cf(κ)cf(κ) is countable iff Ck(κ)C_k(κ) is metrizable.

On topological properties of the weak topology of a Banach space

Being motivated by the famous Kaplansky theorem we study various sequential properties of a Banach space EE and its closed unit ball BB, both endowed with the weak topology of EE. We show that BB has the Pytkeev property if and only if EE in the norm topology contains no isomorphic copy of ℓ1\ell_1, while EE has the Pytkeev property if and only if it is finite-dimensional. We extend Schlüchtermann and Wheeler's result by showing that BB is a (separable) metrizable space if and only if it has countable cs∗cs^\ast-character and is a kk-space. As a corollary we obtain that BB is Polish if and only if it has countable cs∗cs^\ast-character and is Čech-complete, that supplements a result of Edgar and Wheeler.
