Dominance of Electron-Magnon Scattering in Itinerant Ferromagnet Fe3GeTe2

Fe3GeTe2 is a 2-dimensional van der Waals material exhibiting itinerant ferromagnetism upto 230 K. Here, we study aspects of scattering mechanism in Fe3Ge2Te2 single crystals via resistivity, magneto-transport and Hall effect measurements. The quadratic temperature dependence of electrical resistivity below the Curie temperature hints towards the dominance of electron-magnon scattering. A non-saturating positive magnetoresistance (MR) is observed at low temperatures when the magnetic field is applied parallel to the sample plane. The linear negative MR at high fields for T < TC corroborates to the suppression in magnon population due to the damping of spin waves. In the high temperature regime T > TC,MR can be described by the scattering from spin fluctuations using the model described by Khosla and Fischer. Isothermal Hall resistivity curves unveil the presence of anomalous Hall resistivity. Correlation between MR and side jump mechanism further reveals that the electron-magnon scattering is responsible for the side jump contribution to the anomalous Hall effect. Our results provide a clear understanding of the role of electron-magnon scattering on anomalous Hall effect that rules out its origin to be the topological band structure.

Superconductivity and weak anti-localization in nodal-line semimetal SnTaS_2

Topological semimetals with superconducting properties provide an emergent platform to explore the properties of topological superconductors. We report magnetization, and magneto-transport measurements on high quality single crystals of transition metal dichalcogenide SnTaS2. It is a nodal line semimetal with superconducting transition below Tc = 2.9 K. Moderate anisotropy (3.1) is observed in upper critical fields along H||c and H||ab plane. In the normal state we observe large magneto-resistance and weak anti-localization effect that provide unambiguous confirmation of topological features in SnTaS2. Therefore, genuine topological characteristics can be studied in this material, particularly with regard to microscopic origin of order parameter symmetry.

Crystal Growth and characterization of possible New Magnetic Topological Insulators FeBi2Te4

Here we report successful single crystal growth of new possible magnetic topological insulator (MTI) FeBi2Te4 by self-flux method via vacuum encapsulation process. The detailed Rietveld analysis of Powder XRD data shows the as grown MTI crystal to be mainly dominated by FeBi2Te4 phase along with minority phases of Bi2Te3 and FeTe. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) image shows the morphology of as grown MTI single crystal to be of layered type laminar structure. Raman spectroscopy of the crystal exhibited three distinct phonon modes at 65, 110, and 132 cm-1 along with two split secondary modes at 90, and 144cm-1. The secondary split modes are result of FeTe intercalation in Bi2Te3 unit cell. Magneto-resistance measurement has been performed at different temperatures i.e. 200K, 20K and 2K in applied magnetic fields up to 12 Tesla, which showed very low MR in comparison to pure Bi2Te3 crystal. Temperature dependence of DC magnetization measurements show the FeBi2Te4 crystal to be mainly of ferromagnetic (FM) or ferri-magnetic nature above 295 K, albeit a secondary weak magnetic transition is seen at 54-46K as well. Detailed isothermal magnetization (MH) results showed that FM saturation moment at 295K is 0.00213emu/g, which is nearly invariant till 400 K. Summary, we had grown an MTI FeBi2Te4 single crystal, which may be a possible entrant for Quantum Anomalous Hall (QAH) effect at room temperature or above.

Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka (HLN) Fitting of Magneto Transport of Bi2Se3 Single Crystal in Different Magnetic Field Ranges

We report the detailed study of structural micro-structuraland high magnetic field magneto transport propertiesof Bi2Se3single crystal. Bi2Se3 single crystal is grown through conventional solid-state reaction route via the self-flux method. Rietveld analysis on Powder X-ray Diffraction showed that the studied Bi2Se3 crystal is crystallized in single-phase without any impurity. The surface morphology analyzed through Scanning Electron Microscopy study which shows that as-grown single crystal exhibit layered type structure and the quantitative weight of the atomic constituents (Bi and Se) are found to be closeto the stoichiometric amount in energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis. Low temperature (2.5K) magneto-resistance (MR) exhibited a v-type cusp around origin at lower magnetic field, which is the sign of weak anti-localization effect. Further, Bi2Se3 single crystal magneto conductivity data is fitted by well-known HLN equation in different magnetic field range of 2Tesla, 4Tesla and 6Tesla and the resultant found that the conduction mechanism of Bi2Se3 is dominated by WAL state.

Evidence for trivial Berry phase and absence of chiral anomaly in semimetal NbP

We report a detailed magneto-transport study in single crystals of NbP. High quality crystals were grown by vapour transport method. An exceptionally large magnetoresistance is confirmed at low temperature which is non-saturating and is linear at high fields. Models explaining the linear magnetoresistance are discussed and it is argued that in NbP this is linked to charge carrier mobility fluctuations. Negative longitudinal magnetoresistance is not seen, unlike several other Weyl monopnictides, suggesting lack of well defined chiral anomaly in NbP. Unambiguous Shubnikov-de-Haas oscillations are observed at low temperatures that are correlated to Berry phases. The Landau fan diagram indicates trivial Berry phase in NbP crystals corresponding to Fermi surface extrema at 30.5 Tesla.

Evolution of Microstructure and Relaxor Ferroelectric Properties in (La_zBa_(1-z)(Ti0.80Sn0.20)O3

We report a study on a series of lanthanum doped barium stannate-titanate (LBTS) ceramics towards correlating their microstructure with ferroelectric properties. The samples were prepared by solid state reaction technique and the XRD analysis indicated predominantly single phase microstructure. Scanning Electron Microscopy revealed that while a low La doping of 1 atomic % yielded inhibited grain growth in 1LBTS, higher amounts of La doping yield larger leafy grains. This peculiar grain growth and microstructure evolution could be attributed to the combination of the following two competing factors: (i) suppression of O vacancies due to La doping leading to grain growth inhibition and (ii) enhancement of mechanism leading to nucleation and growth of 2-D (leafy) grains for La doping higher than 2 atomic % due to eutectic phenomena. Dielectric permittivity measurements indicate that addition of La enhances diffused phase transition in BTS, but its frequency dependence is observed only at 2 atomic % La doping. This signature relaxor behaviour and the increase in the intensity of a particular Raman peak with La doping, as well as non-saturated PE hysteresis loops confirm the presence of polar nano-regions for 2 and 3 atomic % La doped BTS. However significant enhancement in dielectric permittivity could not be achieved due to reduced grain size.

Weak ferromagnetism in non-centrosymmetric BiPd 4K superconductor

We report synthesis of non-centrosymmetric BiPd single crystal by self flux method. The BiPd single crystal is crystallized in monoclinic structure with the P21 space group. Detailed SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) results show that the crystals are formed in slab like morphology with homogenous distribution of Bi and Pd. The magnetic susceptibility measurement confirmed that the BiPd compound is superconducting below 4K. Further, BiPd exhibits weak ferromagnetism near the superconducting transition temperature in isothermal magnetization (MH) measurements. The temperature dependent electrical resistivity also confirmed that the BiPd single crystal is superconducting at Tc=4K. Magneto transport measurements showed that the estimated Hc2(0) value is around 7.0kOe. We also obtained a sharp peak in heat capacity Cp(T) measurements at below 4K due to superconducting ordering. The normalized specific-heat jump, DC/γTc, is 1.52, suggesting the BiPd to be an intermediate BCS coupled superconductor. The pressure dependent electrical resistivity shows the Tc decreases with increasing applied pressure and the obtained dTc/dP is -0.62K/Gpa.

Effect of pressure on superconductivity in doped topological crystalline insulator Sn0.5In0.5Te

We report on the impact of hydrostatic pressure on the superconductivity of optimally (Indium) doped SnTe which is established to be derived from a topological crystalline insulating phase. Single crystals of Sn1-xInxTe were synthesized by a modified Bridgman method that exhibited maximum superconducting Tc of 4.4 K for x= 0.5. Hydrostatic pressure upto 2.5 GPa was applied on the crystals of Sn0.5In0.5Te and electrical resistivity as a function of temperature and pressure was measured. We observed decrease in onset superconducting transition temperature from 4.4 K to 2.8 K on increasing pressure from ambient to 2.5 GPa. The normal state resistivity also decreased abruptly by an order of magnitude at 0.5 GPa but for higher pressures, the same decreased marginally. From onset, offset and zero resistivity values, dTc/dP of -0.6K/GPa was confirmed. The low temperature normal state resistivity followed T^2 dependence suggesting Fermi liquid behaviour both for ambient and high pressure data. This increase in metallic characteristics accompanied by normal state Fermi liquid behaviour is in accordance with a dome structure for Tc variation with varying carrier concentration.

Improved superconducting properties of skutterudite La3Co4Sn13 with indium substitution

We report on two fold increase in superconducting transition temperature of La3Co4Sn13 by substituting indium at the tin site. The transition temperature of this skutterudite is observed to increase from 2.5 K to 5.1 K for 10 % indium substituted sample. The band structure and density of states calculations also indicate such a possibility. The compounds exhibit type - II superconductivity and the values of lower critical field (Hc1), upper critical field (Hc2), Ginzburg - Landau coherence length , penetration depth and GL parameter are estimated to be 0.0028 T, 0.68 T, 21.6 nm, 33.2 nm and 1.53 respectively for La3 Co4Sn11.7In1.3. Hydrostatic external pressure leads to decrease in transition temperature and the calculated pressure coefficient is -0.311 K/GPa . Flux pinning and vortex activation energies also improved with indium addition. Only positive frequencies are observed in phonon dispersion curve that relate to the absence of charge density wave or structural instability in the normal state.

Single gap s-wave superconductivity in Nb2PdS5

Superconducting order parameter and its symmetry are important parameters towards deciphering the pairing mechanism in newly discovered superconducting systems. We report a study on penetration depth measurement on Nb2PdS5 that has recently been reported with extremely high upper critical field with possible triplet pairing mechanism. Our data show that at low temperatures the change in penetration depth is best fitted with BCS s-wave model for single gap. The zero-temperature value of the superconducting energy gap is estimated to be Δ0 = 1.05 meV. The superfluid density in the entire temperature range is well described by single gap for λ (0) = 220 nm.

Superconductivity by Sr Intercalation in Layered Topological Insulator Bi2Se3

Strontium intercalation between van der Waals bonded layers of topological insulator Bi2Se3 is found to induce superconductivity with a maximum Tc of 2.9 K. Transport measurement on single crystal of optimally doped sample Sr0.1Bi2Se3 shows weak anisotropy (1.5) and upper critical field Hc2(0) equals to 2.1 T for magnetic field applied per-pendicular to c -axis of the sample. The Ginzburg-Landau coherence lengths are Xi-ab = 15.3 Å and Xi_c = 10.2 Å. The lower critical field and zero temperature penetration depth Lambda(0) are estimated to be 0.35 mT and 1550 nm respectively. Hall and Seebeck measurements confirm the dominance of electronic conduction and the carrier concentration is surprisingly low (n = 1.85 x 10^19 cm-3) at 10 K indicating possibility of unconventional superconductivity.

Correlation of magneto-electric coupling with crystal structure in Dy doped hexagonal YMnO3

Coexistence of mutually influencing ferroelectric and magnetic ordering at low temperature in hexagonal phase of rare-earth manganites gives rise to interesting physical phenomena. Here, we report a detailed analysis of powder neutron diffraction (ND) studies on polycrystalline Y1-xDyxMnO3 (x = 0, 0.05) as a function of temperature. Our analysis shows that Dy doping at Y site leads to modification in lattice constants: unit cell shrinks in c direction, but expands in ab plane, unit cell volume increases and effective Mn magnetic moment also reduces. All the Mn-O bond lengths and O-Mn-O bond angles shows significant variations leading to reduction in tilting of MnO5 polyhedra. Dielectric measurements on these samples show that, due to Dy doping, inverse S-shape anomaly shifts to the lower temperature side and magnetoelectric coupling decreases. Magnetic measurements confirm the decrease in the frustration of Mn triangular lattice. Temperature dependent specific heat measurement shows anomaly at Néel temperature (TN) and results indicate a decrease in entropy due to Dy doping. These results are understood in terms of modification in magnetoelectric coupling triggered due to Dy induced strain in Y plane of YMnO3.

Effect of dilution of both A- and B- sites on the multiferroic properties of spinal Mott insulators

The structural, magnetic, electrical and transport properties of FeV2O4, by doping Li and Cr ions respectively in A and B sites, have been studied. Dilution of A-site by Li doping increases the ferri-magnetic ordering temperature and decreases the ferroelectric transition temperature. This also decreases the V-V distances which in effect increases the A-V coupling. This increased A-V coupling dominates over the decrease in A-V coupling due to doping of non-magnetic Li. On the other hand, Cr doping increases the ferri-magnetic ordering temperature but does not alter the ferroelectric transition temperature which is due to the fact that the polarization origin to the presence of almost non-substituted regions.

Electromagnetic Properties of Topological Crystalline Superconductor Sn0.5In0.5Te

We report on the superconducting properties of In doped SnTe which has recently been explored as a topological crystalline superconductor. Single crystals of Sn0.5In0.5Te have been synthesized by modified Bridgman method. Resistivity measurement performed in the range 1.6K to 300K shows metallic normal state with onset of superconducting transition at Tc = 4.5K. Bulk superconductivity has also been confirmed by DC magnetization, AC susceptibility and rf penetration depth measurements. The zero temperature upper critical field, lower critical field, coherence length, penetration depth are estimated to be 1.6T, 10Oe, 143.5 Å and 832nm respectively. Temperature dependence of low temperature penetration depth indicates S-wave fully gapped characteristics with BCS gap meV. Hall and Seebeck coefficient measurements confirm dominance of hole conduction with possible phonon-drag effects around ~45K. Resistive transition studied under the applied magnetic field shows thermally activated flux flow behavior.

Improper Ferroelectricity in Helicoidal Antiferromagnet Cu3Nb2O8

Cu3Nb2O8 is an unusual multiferroic compound that undergoes a series of magnetic ordering at low temperatures. Concurrent development of electric polarization has been reported at TN1 ~25 K corresponding to a non-collinear helicoidal ordering (Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 137205 (2011)). But questions remain on the microscopic origin of such phenomena. In this communication, we report a detailed study of induced polar ordering in Cu3Nb2O8 by performing polarization, magnetization, dielectric constant and heat capacity measurements over a broad range of temperature and magnetic field. The dielectric constant shows suppression in the magnetic field but it does not shift to lower temperature with the application of external field. The appearance of magneto-dielectric effect signifies the contribution of q-dependent magnetic correlation function with enhanced weightage in the presence of magnetic field. This magnetic correlation function is associated with the ferro-axial vector and our overall results support this mechanism for the observation of muliferroicity in Cu3Nb2O8.

A survey on subideals of operators and an introduction to subideal-traces

Operator ideals in B(H) are well understood and exploited but ideals inside them have only recently been studied starting with the 1983 seminal work of Fong and Radjavi and continuing with two recent articles by the authors of this survey. This article surveys this study embodied in these three articles. A subideal is a two-sided ideal of J (for specificity also called a J-ideal) for J an arbitrary ideal of B(H). In this terminology we alternatively call J a B(H)-ideal. This surveys these three articles in which we developed a complete characterization of all J-ideals generated by sets of cardinality strictly less than the cardinality of the continuum. So a central theme is the impact of generating sets for subideals on their algebraic structure. This characterization includes in particular finitely and countably generated J-ideals. It was obtained by first generalizing to arbitrary principal J-ideals the 1983 work of Fong-Radjavi who determined which principal K(H)-ideals are also B(H)-ideals. A key property in our investigation turned out to be J-softness of a B(H)-ideal I inside J, that is, IJ = I, a generalization of a recent notion of K(H)-softness of B(H)-ideals introduced by Kaftal-Weiss and earlier exploited for Banach spaces by Mityagin and Pietsch. This study of subideals and the study of elementary operators with coefficient constraints are closely related. Here we also introduce and study a notion of subideal-traces where classical traces (unitarily invariant linear functionals) need not make sense for subideals that are not B(H)-ideals.

Appearance of superconductivity in new BiS2 based layered LaO0.5F0.5BiS2

We report here synthesis, structural, DC magnetization, and transport studies of new BiS2 based layered LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor [1]. The sample was synthesized by conventional solid state route via vacuum encapsulation technique at 800oC for 12h. LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 crystallizes in tetragonal P4/nmm space group with lattice parameters a = 4.0703(5)Å, c = 13.3902(4)Å. Bulk superconductivity is confirmed with superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 2.7K by DC magnetization measurements. The Isothermal magnetization (MH) measurements showed closed loops with clear signatures of flux pinning and irreversible behavior. The resistivity measurements confirmed an onset Tc of 2.7K. The magneto-transport ρ(T,H) measurements showed a resistive broadening and decrease in Tc (ρ=0) to lower temperatures with increasing magnetic field. The magnetic phase diagram involving upper critical and irreversibility fields as a function of temperature has been ascertained. Our DC magnetization and electrical transport measurements confirm the appearance of bulk superconductivity in LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor.

Evidence for Fully Gapped Strong Coupling S-wave Superconductivity in Bi4O4S3

We report on the superconducting gap and pairing symmetry in layered superconductor Bi4O4S3. The measurement of temperature dependence of magnetic penetration depth was carried out using tunnel diode oscillator technique. It is observed that Bi4O4S3 is a conventional s-wave type superconductor with fully developed gap. The zero-temperature value of the superconducting energy gap Δ0 was found to be 1.54 meV, corresponding to the ratio 2Δ0/kBTc=7.2 which is much higher than the BCS value of 3.53. In the superconducting range, superfluid density is very well described by single gap s- wave model.

Evidence for Multiferroic Characteristics in NdCrTiO5

We report NdCrTiO5 to be an unusual multiferroic material with large magnetic field dependent electric polarization. While magneto-electric coupling in this two magnetic sub-lattice oxide is well established, the purpose of this study is to look for spontaneous symmetry breaking at the magnetic transition. The conclusions are based on extensive magnetization, dielectric and polarization measurements around its antiferromagnetic ordering temperature of 18K. Room temperature X-ray diffraction pattern of NdCrTiO5 reveals that the sample is single phase with an orthorhombic crystal structure that allows linear magneto-electric coupling. DC magnetization measurement shows magnetization downturn at 11K together with a small kink corresponding to the Co+3 sub-lattice ordering at ~18K. An anomaly in dielectric constant is observed around the magnetic ordering temperature that increases substantially with increasing magnetic field. Through detailed pyroelectric current measurements at zero magnetic field, particularly as a function of thermal cycling, we establish that NdCrTiO5 is a genuine multiferroic material that is possibly driven by collinear magneto-striction.

Magnetism driven ferroelectricity above liquid nitrogen temperature in Y2CoMnO6

We report multiferroic behavior in double perovskite Y2CoMnO6 with ferroelectric transition temperature Tc = 80K. The origin of ferroelectricity is associated with magnetic ordering of Co2+ and Mn4+ moments in a up-up-down-down arrangement. The saturation polarization and magnetization are estimated to be 65 uC/m2 and 6.2 Bohr magneton/f.u. respectively. The magnetoelectric coupling parameter, on the other hand, is small as a 5 Tesla field suppresses the electric polarization by only ~8%. This is corroborated with observed hysteretic behaviour at 5K that remains unsaturated even upto 7 Tesla. A model based on exchange-striction is proposed to explain the observed high temperature ferroelectricity.

Spontaneous electric polarization and Magneto-dielectric coupling in ceramic multiferroic Co3TeO6

We report observation of magneto-electric and magneto-dielectric couplings in ceramic Co3TeO6. Temperature dependent DC magnetization and dielectric constant measurements together indicate coupling between magnetic order and electronic polarization. Strong anomaly in dielectric constant at ~ 18K in zero magnetic field indicates presence of spontaneous polarization. Observations like weak ferromagnetic order at lower temperature, field and temperature dependences of the ferroelectric transition provide experimental verification of the recent theoretical proposal by P. Toledano et al., Phys. Rev. B 85, 214439 (2012). We provide direct evidence of spin-phonon coupling as possible origin of magnetic order.

Structural, Electromagnetic, and Thermoelectric properties of Bi4O4S3 Superconductor

We report on the synthesis and extensive characterization of layered Bi4O4S3 superconductor. This is the optimally doped sample with Tc ~5.3 K out of a series of Bi6O4S4(SO4)_1-x samples synthesized by solid state reaction. The series was synthesized towards establishing a phase diagram of transition temperature as a function of carrier concentration. Crystal structure for Bi4O4S3 shows larger bending of Bi2-S2-Bi2 bond in the BiS2 layer compared to that for the parent phase. Scanning electron microscopy images show platelets like morphology for Bi4O4S3 signifying the layered structure. While the parent compound is found to be semiconducting, the electrical resistivity of Bi4O4S3 exhibits T^2 dependence in a small temperature range between 25 and 50 K. The typical dome structure for variation of Tc with dopant concentration is not observed. From the magneto-transport data Hc2 for Bi4O4S3 is estimated to be ~2.75T with WHH approximation and the corresponding coherence length is ~110A. Support for multiband signatures is not seen from magneto-resistance data. RF susceptibility data fits well for S-wave isotropic gap with gap value higher than BCS strong coupling limit. Hall measurements confirm dominance of electronic transport. The experimental value of Seebeck coefficient at 35K is well in accord with the calculated value deduced by using density of charge carriers from Hall experiments. The Sommerfeld constant is estimated to be ~ 1.113 mJ/K^2 mol. Evidence for thermally activated flux flow is observed.

Study of Ni and Zn doped CeOFeAs: Effect on the structural transition and specific heat capacity

We have systematically studied the substitution of nonmagnetic Zn and magnetic Ni at iron sites in Ce based oxypnictide. The parent compound (CeOFeAs) shows an anomaly in resistivity around 150 K due to structural transition from tetragonal (space group: P4/nmm) to orthorhombic structure (space group: Cmma). Substitution of Zn suppresses this anomaly to lower temperature (~130 K) but Ni substitution does not show any anomaly around this temperature and the compound behaves like a metal. Further, we find that non magnetic (Zn) doping leads to higher impurity scattering as compared to magnetic Ni doping. Similar to the resistivity measurement, the specific heat shows another jump near 4 K for CeOFeAs. This is attributed to the ordering of Ce3+ moments. This peak shifts to 3.8 K for Zn substituted compound and there is no change in the ordering temperature in the Ni substituted CeOFeAs. These peaks are broadened in applied magnetic field (5 T) and the calculated magnetic entropy tends to saturate at the same value for 0 T and 5 T external magnetic field.

Bulk Superconductivity in Bismuth-oxy-sulfide Bi4O4S3

Very recent report [1] on observation of superconductivity in Bi4O4S3 could potentially reignite the search for superconductivity in a broad range of layered sulphides. We report here synthesis of Bi4O4S3 at 5000C by vacuum encapsulation technique and basic characterizations. Detailed structural, magnetization, and electrical transport results are reported. Bi4O4S3 is contaminated by small amounts of Bi2S3 and Bi impurities. The majority phase is tetragonal I4/mmm space group with lattice parameters a = 3.9697(2)Å, c = 41.3520(1)Å. Both AC and DC magnetization measurements confirmed that Bi4O4S3 is a bulk superconductor with superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 4.4K. Isothermal magnetization (MH) measurements indicated closed loops with clear signatures of flux pinning and irreversible behavior. The lower critical field (Hc1) at 2K, of the new superconductor is found to be ~39 Oe. The magneto-transport R(T, H) measurements showed a resistive broadening and decrease in Tc (R=0) to lower temperatures with increasing magnetic field. The extrapolated upper critical field Hc2(0) is ~ 310kOe with a corresponding Ginzburg-Landau coherence length of ~100Å . In the normal state the ρ ~ T2 is not indicated. Our magnetization and electrical transport measurements substantiate the appearance of bulk superconductivity in as synthesized Bi4O4S3. On the other hand same temperature heat treated Bi is not superconducting, thus excluding possibility of impurity driven superconductivity in the newly discovered Bi4O4S3 superconductor.

Subideals of operators

A subideal is an ideal of an ideal of B(H) and a principal subideal is a principal ideal of an ideal of B(H). We determine necessary and sufficient conditions for a principal subideal to be an ideal of B(H). This generalizes to arbitrary ideals the 1983 work of Fong and Radjavi characterizing principal subideals of the ideal of compact operators that are also ideals of B(H). We then characterize all principal subideals. We also investigate the lattice structure of subideals as part of the general study of ideal lattices such as the often studied lattice structure of ideals of B(H). This study of subideals and the study of elementary operators with coefficient constraints are closely related.

Subideals of operators II

A subideal (also called a J-ideal) is an ideal of a B(H)-ideal J. This paper is the sequel to Subideals of operators where a complete characterization of principal and then finitely generated J-ideals were obtained by first generalizing the 1983 work of Fong and Radjavi who determined which principal K(H)-ideals are also B(H)-ideals. Here we determine which countably generated J-ideals are B(H)-ideals, and in the absence of the continuum hypothesis which J-ideals with generating sets of cardinality less than the continuum are B(H)-ideals. These and some other results herein are based on the dimension of a related quotient space. We use this to characterize these J-ideals and settle additional questions about subideals. A key property in our investigation turned out to be J-softness of a B(H)-ideal I inside J, that is, IJ = I, a generalization of a recent notion of softness of B(H)-ideals introduced by Kaftal-Weiss and earlier exploited for Banach spaces by Mityagin and Pietsch.

Anomalous Raman scattering from phonons and electrons of superconducting FeSe$_{0.82}$

We report interesting anomalies in the temperature dependent Raman spectra of FeSe$_{0.82}$ measured from 3K to 300K in the spectral range from 60 to 1800 cm$^{-1}$ and determine their origin using complementary first-principles density functional calculations. A phonon mode near 100 cm$^{-1}$ exhibits a sharp increase by $\sim$ 5% in frequency below a temperature T$_s$ ($\sim$ 100 K) attributed to strong spin-phonon coupling and onset of short-range antiferromagnetic order. In addition, two high frequency modes are observed at 1350 cm$^{-1}$ and 1600 cm$^{-1}$, attributed to electronic Raman scattering from ($x^2-y^2$)to $xz$ / $yz$ $d$-orbitals of Fe.

Dominance of magnetoelastic coupling in multiferroic hexagonal YMnO_3

Hexagonal YMnO_3 with space group P63cm is one of the rare examples of multiferroic materials that exhibit co-dependence of a robust ferroelectric phase along with antiferromagnetic ordering. This is primarily ascribed to tilting of the MnO_5 polyhedra driven by magnetoelectric coupling. We report on the effect of magnetic field at the atomic level in YMnO_3 by utilizing magnetic field and temperature dependent neutron diffraction measurements. We show that near the Néel temperature the lattice parameters, effective magnetic moment per site, Mn-O bond lengths and O-Mn-O bond angles show large variations and these are further modified in the presence of magnetic field. We observe distinct changes with the application of magnetic field in the paramagnetic state both in atomic positions and in the bulk dielectric constant. Our results provide unambiguous confirmation of the role played by exchange-striction over and above the much studied magnetoelectric coupling in this frustrated antiferromagnet.

Effect of epitaxial strain on the magneto-electric coupling of YMnO3 thin films

We report synthesis of phase pure multiferroic YMnO3 thin films on sapphire (0001)with conducting ZnGaO buffer contact layer. Films were prepared by using pulsed laser deposition technique and characterized using x-ray diffraction(XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy dispersive absorption spectroscopy (EDAX) and magnetic field dependent dielectric measurement techniques. Structural characterizations indicated phase purity and epitaxial nature of the films. The dielectric response indicated an anomaly in dielectric constant and tand in the vicinity of 30 K, well below the bulk Neel temperature ~ 70 K. This anomaly in dielectric constant and tand and its magnetic field dependence is explained as an influence of strain due to lattice mismatch between the substrate and YMnO3 film. A substantial enhancement in magnetocapacitance was also observed for magnetic field applied parallel to ab plane of the film. Our results show that it is possible to tune the multiferroic property of YMnO3 via changes in ferroelastic route.

Enhancement in transition temperature and critical current density of CeO0.8F0.2FeAs by yttrium doping

We report significant enhancement in superconducting properties of yttrium substituted Ce1-xYxOFFeAs superconductors. The polycrystalline samples were prepared by two step solid state reaction technique. X-ray diffraction confirmed tetragonal ZrCuSiAs structure with decrease in both a and c lattice parameters on increasing yttrium substitution (with fixed F content). With smaller ion Y in place of Ce, the transition temperature increased by 6 K. Yttrium doping also lead to higher critical fields as well as stronger inter and intra-granular current density. The magnetization critical current density increased by an order of magnitude at 30 K and 1 T magnetic field.

We study the effect of 100 MeV Silicon and 200 MeV Gold ion irradiation on the inter and intra grain properties of superconducting thin films of Magnesium Diboride. Substantial decrease in inter-grain connectivity is observed, depending on irradiation dose and type of ions used. We establish that modification of sigma band scattering mechanism, and consequently the upper critical field and anisotropy, depends on the size and directional properties of the extrinsic defects. Post heavy ion irradiation, the upper critical field shows enhancement at a defect density that is five orders of magnitude less compared to neutron irradiation. The critical current density however is best improved through light ion irradiation.
