A comprehensive review on topological superconducting materials and interfaces

Superconductivity in topological materials has drawn a significant interest of the scientific community as these materials provide a hint of the existence of Majorana fermions conceived from the quantized thermal conductivity, a zero-biased conduction peak and the anomalous Josephson effect. In this review, we make a systematic study of recent advances in the field of topological superconductivity. The article comprises of both bulk systems as well as heterostructures. A brief description of Majorana fermions and their relationship with topological superconductors and heterostructures is also carried out. Also, this review consists of details of key experimental techniques to characterize candidates of topological superconductivity. Moreover, we summarize the potential material candidate that may demonstrate topological superconductivity. We also consider some intrinsic odd-parity superconductors, non-centrosymmetric, centrosymmetric superconductors, doped topological insulators, doped topological crystalline insulators and some other materials that are expected to show superconductivity along with topological non-trivial states in bulk from. The effect of pressure, emergence of superconductivity in topological materials and Muon Spin Rotation studies are also summarized in this article.

Bulk superconductivity and non-trivial band topology analysis of Pb2Pd

A perfect topological superconductor can be realized by the simultaneous existence of bulk superconductivity along with topological non-trivial surface states. In this article, we report single crystal growth of superconducting binary compound Pb2Pd. The crystal is well characterized through X-Ray Diffraction (XRD), Selected Area electron diffraction (SAED), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Field emission Scanning electron Microscopy (FESEM) and X-Ray Photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The bulk superconducting nature of the studied crystal is determined through AC susceptibility and magneto-heat capacity measurements. The specific heat jump at superconducting transition suggests Pb2Pd to be a moderately coupled s-wave superconductor. The topological non-trivial character of Pb2Pd is evidenced through bulk electronic band structure and Z2 invariants, which are calculated under the protocols of Density Functional Theory (DFT). This is the first report on topological invariant of Pb2Pd, showing Pb2Pd to possess non-trivial topological band structure

Detailed magneto-heat capacity analysis of SnAs topological superconductor

In this article, we report magneto-heat capacity analysis of superconducting SnAs, which is characterized through X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and magneto-transport measurements. The studied SnAs superconductor evidenced the presence of superconductivity at around 4K, and the same is seen to persist up to an applied field of 250Oe. The bulk nature of superconductivity is determined through AC susceptibility along with heat capacity measurements. Magneto-heat capacity measurements show SnAs to be a fully gapped s wave superconductor. This finding is well supported by calculated superconducting physical parameters. Further, the calculation of the residual Sommerfeld coefficient at different fields confirms node-less superconductivity in SnAs.

Growth, structure, micro-structure and magneto transport of an easy route synthesized bulk polycrystalline TiSe2

This article reports an easy route synthesis of bulk polycrystalline TiSe2. Phase purity and microstructure are determined through powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) respectively. Vibrational modes of TiSe2 as being analyzed by Raman spectroscopy, show the occurrence of both Ag and Eg modes. Charge density wave (CDW) is observed in transport measurements of TiSe2 with hysteresis in cooling and warming measurements at around 180K. Further, studied TiSe2 showed negative magnetoresistance (MR) below the CDW and a small positive MR above the CDW.

Probing the topological surface states in superconducting Sn4Au single crystal: A magneto transport study

Materials exhibiting bulk superconductivity along with magnetoresistance (MR) in their normal state have emerged as suitable candidates for topological superconductivity. In this article, we report a flux free method to synthesize single crystal of topological superconductor candidate Sn4Au. The phase purity and single crystalline nature are confirmed through various characterizations viz. X-Ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), selected Area electron diffraction (SAED), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Chemical states of the constituent element viz. Sn and Au are analyzed through X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Superconductivity in synthesized Sn4Au single crystal is evident form R-T plot and critical field (Hc) is determined through R-H plot at 2K i.e., just below critical temperature Tc. A positive magnetoresistance (MR) is observed in R-H measurements at different temperatures above Tc, viz. at 3K, 5K, 10K and 20K. Further, the magnetoconductivity (MC) is analyzed by using Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka (HLN) formalism, which signifies the presence of weak antilocalization (WAL) effect in Sn4Au. Angle dependent magneto-transport measurement has been performed to detect the origin of the observed WAL effect in Sn4Au single crystal. Normalized MC vs HcosTheta plot shows presence of topological surface states (TSS) in the studied system. It is evident that Sn4Au is a 2.6K topological superconductor.

Shubnikov de Haas (SdH) Oscillation in Self-Flux Grown Rhombohedral Single Crystalline Bismuth

The historic de Haas van Alphen effect observed in the late 1950s in CSIR-NPL by J.S. Dhillon and D. Shoenberg in pure bismuth and zinc metal is revisited in this article hrough a single crystalline phase of bismuth crystal, which is observed in terms of resistivity as predicted by Shubnikov de Haas oscillations. The occurrence of oscillations in the transverse magnetic field confirms the presence of the Fermi surface. The single crystal of bismuth is grown through solid-state reaction under an optimized heat treatment whose purity and structural phase are confirmed through XRD, SEM, and EDAX.

Sn2Pd: a possible superconducting material with topological surface states

In this article, we report the detailed magneto transport measurements of the topological semimetal (TSM) candidate, Sn2Pd. Single crystal of Sn2Pd is synthesized through the self-flux method. Phase purity and crystalline morphology are confirmed through powder X ray diffraction (PXRD) pattern and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) image. Signatures of superconducting transition are seen in both transport and magneto transport measurements, which are further supported by the AC magnetization studies. Sn2Pd is found to show superconductivity onset at below 2.8K, but not the zero resistivity down to 2K. Although, isothermal magneto resistivity measurements below superconducting onset (2.8K) clearly exhibited superconductor-like behavior, but is not observed in heat capacity measurements, indicating the same to be of weak nature. Magnetotransport measurements performed in a normal state of Sn2Pd show the presence of a weak antilocalization (WAL) effect, which is confirmed by modeling of low field magneto-conductivity (MC) through Hikami Larkin Nagaoka (HLN) formalism. Here, it is worth mentioning that the present article is the first report on magneto transport measurements of Sn2Pd, which show the same to be a topological material with a weak superconducting phase below around 2.8K.

Thickness-Dependent Magneto Transport of Bi2Se3/SiO2 Topological Insulator thin films

Topological insulators are immensely investigated for their surface states related properties as these materials can be used for various spintronics, quantum computing, and optoelectronics applications. In this perspective, different thicknesses of bismuth selenide thin films are deposited on the 250 nm SiO2 substrate with the help of thermal deposition. The motive of this study is to investigate the surface and bulk-related behaviour with different thicknesses. The deposited films are characterized through GI-XRD (grazing incidence X-ray diffractometer) and Raman spectroscopy, which ensure the impurity less deposition. Further, the transport properties are investigated, which shows thickness dependence of weak anti-localization effect (WAL) in the system and proposed these Bi2Se3/SiO2 thin films as a topological Anderson insulator (TAI).

Topological Superconductor AuSn4: A first principle study

Topological semimetals such as Weyl or Dirac semimetals with superconductivity have emerged as a new class of topological materials to realize and study Majorana Fermion. This article reports the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculated bulk electronic band structure of recently discovered topological superconductor candidate AuSn4. The study has been performed on AuSn4 considering two space groups symmetries viz. Aea2 and Ccce, as reported earlier. This study is further extended to the calculation of Z2 invariants. The Fermi surfaces corresponding to the bands, which are responsible for non-trivial band topology, along with the surface states, are also mapped. The complete study suggests that AuSn4 is a topological semimetal. On AuSn4, it is the first report in the literature showing the non-trivial band topology based on first-principle calculations.

Modeling of Magneto-Conductivity of Bismuth Selenide -- A Topological Insulator

We report the magneto-conductivity analysis of Bi2Se3 single crystal at different temperatures in a magnetic field range of 14Tesla. The single crystals are grown by the self-flux method and characterized through X-ray diffraction, Scanning Electron Microscopy, and Raman Spectroscopy. The single crystals show magnetoresistance (MR) of around 380 percent at a magnetic field of 14T and a temperature of 5K. The Hikami Larkin Nagaoka (HLN) equation has been used to fit the magneto-conductivity (MC) data. However, the HLN fitted curve deviates at higher magnetic fields above 1 Tesla, suggesting that the role of surface driven conductivity suppresses with an increasing magnetic field. This article proposes a speculative model comprising of surface-driven HLN and added quantum diffusive and bulk carriers driven classical terms. The model successfully explains the MC of the Bi2Se3 single crystal at various temperatures (5 to 200K) and applied magnetic fields (up to 14Tesla).

Crystal Growth and characterization of possible New Magnetic Topological Insulators FeBi2Te4

Here we report successful single crystal growth of new possible magnetic topological insulator (MTI) FeBi2Te4 by self-flux method via vacuum encapsulation process. The detailed Rietveld analysis of Powder XRD data shows the as grown MTI crystal to be mainly dominated by FeBi2Te4 phase along with minority phases of Bi2Te3 and FeTe. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) image shows the morphology of as grown MTI single crystal to be of layered type laminar structure. Raman spectroscopy of the crystal exhibited three distinct phonon modes at 65, 110, and 132 cm-1 along with two split secondary modes at 90, and 144cm-1. The secondary split modes are result of FeTe intercalation in Bi2Te3 unit cell. Magneto-resistance measurement has been performed at different temperatures i.e. 200K, 20K and 2K in applied magnetic fields up to 12 Tesla, which showed very low MR in comparison to pure Bi2Te3 crystal. Temperature dependence of DC magnetization measurements show the FeBi2Te4 crystal to be mainly of ferromagnetic (FM) or ferri-magnetic nature above 295 K, albeit a secondary weak magnetic transition is seen at 54-46K as well. Detailed isothermal magnetization (MH) results showed that FM saturation moment at 295K is 0.00213emu/g, which is nearly invariant till 400 K. Summary, we had grown an MTI FeBi2Te4 single crystal, which may be a possible entrant for Quantum Anomalous Hall (QAH) effect at room temperature or above.

Exploration of terahertz from time-resolved ultrafast spectroscopy in single-crystal Bi2Se3 topological insulator

In this article, we reconnoiter the differential reflection signal of a Bi2Se3 single crystal flake, using ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy in the femtosecond time domain and thereby explore the experimental data in terms of terahertz frequency generated in the sample. An exfoliated flake of a well characterized self-flux grown bulk Bi2Se3 single crystal having rhombohedral structure and layered morphology is used in the present study. The kinetic profile of the same being generated through a reflection signal by a pump laser of 650 nm at an average power of 0.5 mW is studied utilizing time-resolved ultrafast technique. The silhouette as a function of probe delay predicting the capability of the terahertz generation is estimated. Here, two methods FFT (fast Fourier transformation) and FFD (filtering high-frequency component followed by fitting data) are performed to estimate the value of terahertz generated in the system. While comparing the two (FFT & FFD) it is found that a large amount of magnitude difference occurs in the prediction of terahertz frequency. Summarily, we not only report the generation of terahertz in Bi2Se3 flake, also but points out that the exact order of magnitude and the capability of the same depends upon the method of analysis. It is important to extract the vibration signal from the background one so that to find the exact order of magnitude and capability of terahertz generation by any quantum material.

Type-II Superconductivity below 4K in Sn0.4Sb0.6

In this article, we report the occurrence of superconductivity in Sn0.4Sb0.6 single crystal at below 4K. Rietveld refined Powder XRD data confirms the phase purity of as grown crystal, crystallizing in rhombohedral R-3m space group with an elongated (2xc) unit cell in c-direction. Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) image and EDAX measurement confirm the laminar growth and near to desired stoichiometry ratio. Raman Spectroscopy data shows the vibrational modes of Sn-Sb and Sb-Sb modes at 110 and 135cm-1. ZFC (Zero-Field-Cooled) magnetization measurements done at 10Oe showed sharp superconducting transitions at 4K along with a minor step at 3.5K. On the other hand, Paramagnetic Meissner Effect (PME) is observed in FC measurements. Magnetization vs applied field (M-H) plots at 2, 2.2, 2.5, 2.7, 3, 3.2, 3.5, and 3.7K shows typical Type-II nature of observed superconductivity with lower and upper critical fields (Hc1 and Hc2) at 69.42Oe and 630Oe respectively at 2K. Type-II superconductivity is also confirmed by calculated Ginzburg-Landau Kappa parameter value of 3.55. Characteristics length viz. coherence length and penetration depth are also calculated. Weak granular coupling is observed from R-T plot, in which resistance is not dropping to zero down to 2K.

Hikami-Larkin-Nagaoka (HLN) Fitting of Magneto Transport of Bi2Se3 Single Crystal in Different Magnetic Field Ranges

We report the detailed study of structural micro-structuraland high magnetic field magneto transport propertiesof Bi2Se3single crystal. Bi2Se3 single crystal is grown through conventional solid-state reaction route via the self-flux method. Rietveld analysis on Powder X-ray Diffraction showed that the studied Bi2Se3 crystal is crystallized in single-phase without any impurity. The surface morphology analyzed through Scanning Electron Microscopy study which shows that as-grown single crystal exhibit layered type structure and the quantitative weight of the atomic constituents (Bi and Se) are found to be closeto the stoichiometric amount in energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analysis. Low temperature (2.5K) magneto-resistance (MR) exhibited a v-type cusp around origin at lower magnetic field, which is the sign of weak anti-localization effect. Further, Bi2Se3 single crystal magneto conductivity data is fitted by well-known HLN equation in different magnetic field range of 2Tesla, 4Tesla and 6Tesla and the resultant found that the conduction mechanism of Bi2Se3 is dominated by WAL state.

Ultrafast Spectroscopy of Bi2Se3 Topological Insulator

We investigate the ultrafast transient absorption spectrum of Bi2Se3 topological insulator. Bi2Se3 single crystal is grown through conventional solid-state reaction routevia self-flux method. The structural properties have been studied in terms of high-resolution Powder X-ray Diffraction (PXRD). Detailed Rietveld analysis of PXRD of the crystal showed that sample is crystallized in the rhombohedral crystal structure with a space group of R-3m, and the lattice parameters are a=b=4.14A and c=28.7010A. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) result shows perfectly crystalline structure with layered type morphology which evidenced from surface XRD. Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (EDS) analysis determined quantitative amounts of the constituent atoms, found to be very close to their stoichiometric ratio. Further the fluence dependent nonlinear behaviour is studied by means of ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy. The ultrafast spectroscopy also predicts the capability of this single crystal to generate Terahertz (THz) radiations (T-rays).

An inter comparison of the upper critical fields (Hc2) of different superconductors - YBa2Cu3O7, MgB2, NdFeAsO0.8F0.2, FeSe0.5Te0.5 and Nb2PdS5

Here we report the comparison of the upper critical fields of different superconductors being calculated by two different theories i.e., Werthamer Helfand Hohenburg (WHH) and Ginzberg Landau (GL). All the samples are synthesized through previously known solid state reaction route. Phase purity is determined from the Rietveld refinement of powder X-Ray diffraction (XRD) data. High field (up to 14Tesla) magneto transport \r{ho}(T)H of different superconductors is studied to estimate their upper critical field (Hc2). The present inter comparison covers from Cuprates (YBa2Cu3O7) - Borides (MgB2) - Fe pnictides (NdFeAsO0.8F0.2) and chalcogenides (FeSe0.5Te0.5) to robust Nb2PdS5. The upper critical fields [Hc2(T)] at zero temperature are calculated by extrapolating the data using GL and WHH equations.

Effect of impurity substitution on band structure and mass renormalization of the correlated FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ superconductor

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES), we studied the effect of the impurity potential on the electronic structure of FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ superconductor by substituting 10\% of Ni for Fe which leads to an electron doping of the system. We could resolve three hole pockets near the zone center and an electron pocket near the zone corner in the case of FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$, whereas only two hole pockets near the zone center and an electron pocket near the zone corner are resolved in the case of Fe$_{0.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$Te$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$, suggesting that the hole pocket having predominantly the $xy$ orbital character is very sensitive to the impurity scattering. Upon electron doping, the size of the hole pockets decrease and the size of the electron pockets increase as compared to the host compound. However, the observed changes in the size of the electron and hole pockets are not consistent with the rigid-band model. Moreover, the effective mass of the hole pockets is reduced near the zone center and of the electron pockets is increased near the zone corner in the doped Fe$_{0.9}$Ni$_{0.1}$Te$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$ as compared to FeTe$_{0.5}$Se$_{0.5}$. We refer these observations to the changes of the spectral function due to the effect of the impurity potential of the dopants.

Improvement in granularity of NdFeAsO0.8F0.2 superconductor through Ag doping

We report the impact of silver addition on granularity of NdFeAsO0.8F0.2 superconductor. The ac susceptibility and electrical resistivity under magnetic field are measured to study the improvement in weak links of NdFeAsO0.8F0.2 with addition of Ag. The Ag free NdFeAsO0.8F0.2 compound shows superconductivity at around 51.8K. Typical two step superconducting transitions due to the inter and intra grain contributions, induced from the combined effect of superconducting grains and the inter-granular weak-coupled medium respectively are clearly seen in susceptibility plots. In comparison to the pure NdFeAsO0.8F0.2 compound, the coupling between the superconducting grains is significantly improved for 20Ag silver doped sample, and the same is deteriorated for higher Ag content i.e., for 30wt Ag sample. The magneto transport measurements R(T)H of polycrystalline 20Ag doped NdFeAsO0.8F0.2, exhibited the upper critical filed [Hc2(0)] of up to 334Tesla, which is slightly higher than the one observed for pure NdFeAsO0.8F0.2. The flux flow activation energy varies from 7143.38K to 454.77K with magnetic field ranging from 0Tesla to 14Tesla for 20wtAg doped NdFeAsO0.8F0.2. In this investigation, our results show that limited addition of Ag improves the granular coupling of superconducting grains of NdFeAsO0.8F0.2 compound.

Influence of Ni doping on critical parameters of PdTe superconductor

We report the effect of Ni doping on superconductivity of PdTe. The superconducting parameters like critical temperature (Tc), upper critical field (Hc2) and normalized specific-heat jump are reported for Ni doped Pd1-xNixTe. The samples of series Pd1-xNixTe with nominal compositions x=0, 0.01, 0.05, 0.07, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3 and 1.0 are synthesized via vacuum shield solid state reaction route. All the studied samples of Pd1-xNixTe series are crystallized in hexagonal crystal structure as refined by Rietveld method to space group P63/mmc. Both the electrical resistivity and magnetic measurements revealed that Tc decreases with increase of Ni concentration in Pd1-xNixTe. The magneto-transport measurements suggest that flux is better pinned for 20% Ni doped PdTe as compared to other compositions of Pd1-xNixTe. The effect and contribution of Ni 3d electron to electronic structure and density of states near Fermi level in Pd1-xNixTe are also studied using first-principle calculations within spin polarized local density approximation. The overlap of bands at Fermi level for NiTe is larger as compared to PdTe. Also the density of states just below Fermi level (in conduction band) drops much lower for PdTe than as for NiTe. Summarily, Ni doping in Pd1-xNixTe superconductor suppresses superconductivity moderately and also Ni is of non magnetic character in these compounds.

Structural and Transport Studies of Under Doped FeTe1-xSex(x=0.0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05) Single Crystals

We report synthesis of under doped non-superconducting parent compound of iron chalcogenide, i.e FeTe1-xSex (x=0.0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05) single crystals by flux free method. These FeTe1-xSex (x=0.0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05) single crystals are crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm at room temperature. Detailed scanning electron microscopy (SEM) results showed that the crystals are formed in slab-like morphology structure. Powder X-Ray diffraction (XRD) results show that (0 0 l) peaks are shifted towards higher angel with increasing Se concentration. Coupled magnetic and structural phase transition temperature, being seen as a step in resistivity, decreases from around 67K for x = 0.0 to 55K for x = 0.05 crystal. Further, the step in resistivity is seen to be hysteric (ΔT) in nature, i.e., different step temperatures in cooling and warming cycles. Interestingly, the hysteric (ΔT) becomes narrower from around 5.8K for x =0.0 to 0.95K for x =0.05 crystal.

Structural, and Magnetic properties of flux free large FeTe Single crystal

We report synthesis of non superconducting parent compound of iron chalcogenide, i.e., FeTe single crystal by self flux method. The FeTe single crystal is crystallized in tetragonal structure with the P4/nmm space group. The detailed SEM (scanning electron microscopy) results showed that the crystals are formed in slab like morphology and are near (slight deficiency of Te) stoichiometric with homogenous distribution of Fe and Te. The coupled structural and magnetic phase transition is seen at around 70K in both electrical resistivity and magnetization measurements, which is hysteric (deltaT = 5K) in nature with cooling and warming cycles. Magnetic susceptibility (chi-T) measurements showed the magnetic transition to be of antiferromagnetic nature, which is substantiated by isothermal magnetization (M-H) plots as well. The temperature dependent electrical resistivity measured in 10kOe field in both in plane and out of plane field directions showed that the hysteric width nearly becomes double to deltaT = 10K, and is maximum for the out of plane field direction for the studied FeTe single crystal. We also obtained a sharp spike like peak in heat capacity Cp(T) measurement due to the coupled structural and magnetic order phase transitions.

Tuning the magnetocrystalline anisotropy in $R$CoPO by means of $R$ substitution: a ferromagnetic resonance study

We report on broad-band electron spin resonance measurements performed within the itinerant ferromagnetic phase of $R$CoPO ($R$ = La, Pr, Nd and Sm). We reveal that the $R$ substitution is highly effective in gradually introducing a sizeable easy-plane magnetocrystalline anisotropy within the Co sublattice. We explain our results in terms of a subtle interplay of structural effects and of indirect interactions between the $f$ and $d$ orbitals from $R$ and Co, respectively.

Ultrasensitive interplay between ferromagnetism and superconductivity in NbGd composite thin films

A model binary hybrid system composed of a randomly distributed rare-earth ferromagnetic (Gd) part embedded in an s-wave superconducting (Nb) matrix is being manufactured to study the interplay between competing superconducting and ferromagnetic order parameters. The normal metallic to superconducting phase transition appears to be very sensitive to the magnetic counterpart and the modulation of the superconducing properties follow closely to the Abrikosov-Gorkov (AG) theory of magnetic impurity induced pair breaking mechanism. A critical concentration of Gd is obtained for the studied NbGd based composite films (CFs) above which superconductivity disappears. Besides, a magnetic ordering resembling the paramagnetic Meissner effect (PME) appears in DC magnetization measurements at temperatures close to the superconducting transition temperature. The positive magnetization related to the PME emerges upon doping Nb with Gd. The temperature dependent resistance measurements evolve in a similar fashion with the concentration of Gd as that with an external magnetic field and in both the cases, the transition curves accompany several intermediate features indicating the traces of magnetism originated either from Gd or from the external field. Finally, the signatures of magnetism appear evidently in the magnetization and transport measurements for the CFs with very low (less than 1 at. %) doping of Gd.

Unusual Dirac fermions on the surface of noncentrosymmetric $α$ - BiPd superconductor

Combining multiple emergent correlated properties such as superconductivity and magnetism within the topological matrix can have exceptional consequences in garnering new and exotic physics. Here, we study the topological surface states from a noncentrosymmetric $α$-BiPd superconductor by employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and first principle calculations. We observe that the Dirac surface states of this system have several interesting and unusual properties, compared to other topological surface states. The surface state is strongly anisotropic and the in-plane Fermi velocity varies rigorously on rotating the crystal about the $y$-axis. Moreover, it acquires an unusual band gap as a function of $k_y$, possibly due to hybridization with bulk bands, detected upon varying the excitation energy. Coexistence of all the functional properties, in addition to the unusual surface state characteristics make this an interesting material.

Weak ferromagnetism in non-centrosymmetric BiPd 4K superconductor

We report synthesis of non-centrosymmetric BiPd single crystal by self flux method. The BiPd single crystal is crystallized in monoclinic structure with the P21 space group. Detailed SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) results show that the crystals are formed in slab like morphology with homogenous distribution of Bi and Pd. The magnetic susceptibility measurement confirmed that the BiPd compound is superconducting below 4K. Further, BiPd exhibits weak ferromagnetism near the superconducting transition temperature in isothermal magnetization (MH) measurements. The temperature dependent electrical resistivity also confirmed that the BiPd single crystal is superconducting at Tc=4K. Magneto transport measurements showed that the estimated Hc2(0) value is around 7.0kOe. We also obtained a sharp peak in heat capacity Cp(T) measurements at below 4K due to superconducting ordering. The normalized specific-heat jump, DC/γTc, is 1.52, suggesting the BiPd to be an intermediate BCS coupled superconductor. The pressure dependent electrical resistivity shows the Tc decreases with increasing applied pressure and the obtained dTc/dP is -0.62K/Gpa.

The synthesized LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound is crystallized in tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm and Reitveld refined lattice parameters are a= 4.15(1)A and c=14.02(2)A. The LaO0.5F0.5BiSe2 compound showed metallic normal state electrical resistivity with residual resistivity value of 1.35mΩ-cm. The compound is type-II superconductor, and the estimated Hc2(0) value obtained by WHH formula is above 20kOe for 90percent Rn criteria. The superconducting transition temperature decreases with applied pressure till around 1.68GPa and with further higher pressures a high Tc phase emerges with possible onset Tc of above 5K for 2.5GPa.

Appearance of bulk Superconductivity under Hydrostatic Pressure in Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 (RE = Ce, Nd, Pr and Sm) compounds

We report the appearance of superconductivity under hydrostatic pressure (0.35 to 2.5GPa) in Sr0.5RE0.5FBiS2 with RE = Ce, Nd, Pr and Sm. The studied compounds, synthesized by solid state reaction route, are crystallized in tetragonal P4/nmm space group. At ambient pressure though the RE = Ce exhibit the onset of superconductivity below 2.5K, the Nd, Pr and Sm samples are not superconducting down to 2K. With application of hydrostatic pressure (up to 2.5GPa), superconducting transition temperature is increased to around 10K for all the studied samples. The magneto-transport measurements are carried out on all the samples with maximum Tc i.e., at under 2.5GPa pressure and their upper critical fields are determined. The new superconducting compounds appear to be quite robust against magnetic field but within Pauli paramagnetic limit. The new superconducting compounds with various RE (Ce, Nd, Pr and Sm) belonging to Sr0.5La0.5FBiS2 family are successfully synthesized for the first time and superconductivity is induced in them under hydrostatic pressure.

Common effect of chemical and external pressures on the magnetic properties of $R$CoPO ($R$ = La, Pr, Nd, Sm). II

The direct correspondence between Co band ferromagnetism and structural parameters is investigated in the pnictide oxides $R$CoPO for different rare-earth ions ($R$ = La, Pr, Nd, Sm) by means of muon-spin spectroscopy and {\it ab-initio} calculations, complementing our results published previously [G. Prando {\it et al.}, {\it Phys. Rev. B} {\bf 87}, 064401 (2013)]. Both the transition temperature to the ferromagnetic phase $T_{_{\textrm{C}}}$ and the volume of the crystallographic unit cell $V$ are found to be conveniently tuned by the $R$ ionic radius and/or external pressure. A linear correlation between $T_{_{\textrm{C}}}$ and $V$ is reported and {\it ab-initio} calculations unambiguously demonstrate a full equivalence of chemical and external pressures. As such, $R$ ions are shown to be influencing the ferromagnetic phase only via the induced structural shrinkage without involving any active role from the electronic $f$ degrees of freedom, which are only giving a sizeable magnetic contribution at much lower temperatures.

Effect of Hydrostatic Pressure on BiS2-Based Layered Superconductors: A Review

We report impact of hydrostatic pressure on the newly discovered BiS2 based superconductors. In last couple of years the new BiS2 based superconductor attracted great attention of the condensed matter physics community. These new layered BiS2-based compounds are very sensitive to the concentration of carriers doping and pressure that cause profound changes in their physical properties with appearance of superconductivity in the vicinity of their insulating/semiconducting state. The BiS2-based new compounds are expected to provide us with the next stage of exploring new superconductors and to discuss their exotic superconductivity mechanisms. In current review, we present most of our findings related to impact of hydrostatic pressure on superconductivity of new BiS2 based superconductors at one place.

We study the impact of hydrostatic pressure on superconductivity of new BiS2 based layered REO0.5F0.5BiS2 (RE-La, Pr, and Nd) compounds through the measurements of dc electrical resistivity. The REO0.5F0.5BiS2 (RE-La, Pr and Nd) compounds synthesized by solid state reaction route via vacuum encapsulation are crystallized in the tetragonal P4/nmm space group. At ambient pressure the superconducting transition onset temperatures are 2.7K, 3.5K and 4.5K which are enhanced substantially under external hydrostatic pressure to 10.5K, 7.8K and 7.5K for LaO0.5F0.5BiS2, PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 and NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 respectively at 1.68GPa. The normal state electrical resistivity decreases with applied pressure for REO0.5F0.5BiS2 (RE-La, Pr and Nd). The electrical resistivity under magnetic field and applied pressure has been measured to estimate upper critical field, the values of which are 15.9Tesla, 8.8Tesla and 8.2Tesla for LaO0.5F0.5BiS2, PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 and NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 compounds. Substantial enhancement of superconductivity under moderate pressures in studied new BiS2 based superconductors call for the attention of condensed matter physics community.

Effect of pressure on superconductivity in doped topological crystalline insulator Sn0.5In0.5Te

We report on the impact of hydrostatic pressure on the superconductivity of optimally (Indium) doped SnTe which is established to be derived from a topological crystalline insulating phase. Single crystals of Sn1-xInxTe were synthesized by a modified Bridgman method that exhibited maximum superconducting Tc of 4.4 K for x= 0.5. Hydrostatic pressure upto 2.5 GPa was applied on the crystals of Sn0.5In0.5Te and electrical resistivity as a function of temperature and pressure was measured. We observed decrease in onset superconducting transition temperature from 4.4 K to 2.8 K on increasing pressure from ambient to 2.5 GPa. The normal state resistivity also decreased abruptly by an order of magnitude at 0.5 GPa but for higher pressures, the same decreased marginally. From onset, offset and zero resistivity values, dTc/dP of -0.6K/GPa was confirmed. The low temperature normal state resistivity followed T^2 dependence suggesting Fermi liquid behaviour both for ambient and high pressure data. This increase in metallic characteristics accompanied by normal state Fermi liquid behaviour is in accordance with a dome structure for Tc variation with varying carrier concentration.

Electron correlation effects and scattering rates in Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ superconductor

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy we have studied the low-energy electronic structure and the Fermi surface topology of Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ superconductors. Similar to the known iron pnictides we observe hole pockets at the center and electron pockets at the corner of the Brillouin zone (BZ). However, on a finer level, the electronic structure around the $Γ$- and $Z$-points in $k$-space is substantially different from other iron pnictides, in that we observe two hole pockets at the $Γ$-point, and more interestingly only one hole pocket is seen at the $Z$-point, whereas in $1111$-, $111$-, and $122$-type compounds, three hole pockets could be readily found at the zone center. Another major difference noted in the Fe$_{1+y}$Te$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ superconductors is that the top of innermost hole-like band moves away from the Fermi level to higher binding energy on going from $Γ$ to $Z$, quite opposite to the iron pnictides. The polarization dependence of the observed features was used to aid the attribution of the orbital character of the observed bands. Photon energy dependent measurements suggest a weak $k_z$ dispersion for the outer hole pocket and a moderate $k_z$ dispersion for the inner hole pocket. By evaluating the momentum and energy dependent spectral widths, the single-particle self-energy was extracted and interestingly this shows a pronounced non-Fermi liquid behaviour for these compounds. The experimental observations are discussed in context of electronic band structure calculations and models for the self-energy such as the spin-fermion model and the marginal-Fermi liquid.

Flux free growth of large FeSe1/2Te1/2 superconducting single crystals by an easy high temperature melt and slow cooling method

We report successful growth of flux free large single crystals of superconducting FeSe1/2Te1/2 with typical dimensions of up to few cm. The AC and DC magnetic measurements revealed the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) value of around 11.5K and the iso-thermal MH showed typical type-II superconducting behavior. The lower critical field being estimated by measuring the low field iso-thermal magnetization in superconducting regime is found to be above 200 Oe at 0K.

Impact of Ni doping on critical parameters of PdTe type-II BCS superconductor

We report the impact of Ni doping on superconductivity of PdTe superconductor. The superconducting parameters like critical temperature (Tc), upper critical field (Hc2) and normalized specific-heat jump are reported for Ni doped Pd1-xNixTe. The samples of series Pd1-xNixTe with nominal compositions x=0, .01, 0.05, 0.07, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, 0.3 and 1.0 are synthesized via solid state reaction route. All the studied samples of series Pd1-xNixTe (x = 0.0 to 1.0) are crystallized in hexagonal crystal structure within the space group P63/mmc. Unit cell volume shrinks almost linearly upon Ni doping in Pd1-xNixTe. The normal state residual resistivity increases with Ni substitution on Pd site. Both the electrical resistivity and magnetic measurements revealed that Tc decreases with increase of Ni concentration in Pd1-xNixTe and is not observed down to 2K for x=0.30 i.e., 30% of Ni doping at Pd site. Interestingly, this is unusual for magnetic Ni doping in a known type-II BCS type superconductor. Magnetic Ni must suppress the superconductivity much faster. Interestingly, the isothermal magnetization measurements for NiTe revealed that Ni is non-magnetic in Pd1-xNixTe structure and hence the Tc depression is mainly due to disorder. The magneto-transport measurements revealed that flux is better pinned for 20% Ni doped PdTe as compared to other compositions of Pd1-xNixTe. The magnetic field dependence of specific heat of Pd1-xNixTe for x=0.01 was studied and the estimated value of the normalized specific-heat jump,is found to be 1.42, which is under BCS weak-coupling limit. Summarily, we report the impact of Ni doping in Pd1-xNixTe superconductor and conclude that Ni substitutes at Pd site, suppress superconductivity moderately and is of non magnetic nature in this system. To best of our knowledge this is the first study on Ni substitution in PdTe superconductor.

Improved superconducting properties of skutterudite La3Co4Sn13 with indium substitution

We report on two fold increase in superconducting transition temperature of La3Co4Sn13 by substituting indium at the tin site. The transition temperature of this skutterudite is observed to increase from 2.5 K to 5.1 K for 10 % indium substituted sample. The band structure and density of states calculations also indicate such a possibility. The compounds exhibit type - II superconductivity and the values of lower critical field (Hc1), upper critical field (Hc2), Ginzburg - Landau coherence length , penetration depth and GL parameter are estimated to be 0.0028 T, 0.68 T, 21.6 nm, 33.2 nm and 1.53 respectively for La3 Co4Sn11.7In1.3. Hydrostatic external pressure leads to decrease in transition temperature and the calculated pressure coefficient is -0.311 K/GPa . Flux pinning and vortex activation energies also improved with indium addition. Only positive frequencies are observed in phonon dispersion curve that relate to the absence of charge density wave or structural instability in the normal state.

Pressure enhanced superconductivity at 10 K in La doped EuBiS2F

Polycrystalline Eu0.5La0.5BiS2F was synthesized by solid state reaction which crystallizes in the tetragonal CeOBiS2 structure (P4/nmm). We report here enhancement of Tc to 2.2 K in Eu0.5La0.5BiS2F (by electron doping in EuBiS2F with Tc ~ 0.3 K). Eu0.5La0.5BiS2F is semiconducting down to 3 K and an onset of superconductivity is seen at 2.2 K at ambient pressure. Upon application of pressure the Tc could be enhanced upto 10 K. Step like features are seen in the resistivity curves at intermediate pressures (0.5 - 1 GPa) which hints towards the possible existence of two phases with different Tc. At a pressure above 1.38GPa, the Tconset remains invariant at 10 K but the Tc(\r{ho}=0) is increased to above 8.2 K. There is a possible transformation from a low Tc phase to a high Tc phase by application of pressure.

Specific heat of robust Nb2PdS5 superconductor

We report specific heat under different magnetic fields for recently discovered quasi-one dimensional Nb2PdS5 superconductor. The studied compound is superconducting below 6 K. Nb2PdS5 is quite robust against magnetic field with dHc/dT of -42 kOe/K. The estimated upper critical field [Hc2(0)] is 190 kOe, clearly surpassing the Pauli-paramagnetic limit of 1.84Tc. Low temperature heat capacity in superconducting state of Nb2PdS5 under different magnetic fields showed s-wave superconductivity with two different gaps. Two quasi-linear slopes in Somerfield-coefficient as a function of applied magnetic field and two band behavior of the electronic heat capacity demonstrate that Nb2PdS5 is a multiband su-perconductor in weak coupling limit with deltagamma/deltaTc=0.9.

Structural, Magnetic and Magneto-caloric studies of Ni50Mn30Sn20Shape Memory Alloy

We have synthesized a nominal composition of Ni50Mn30Sn20 alloy using arc melting technique. Rietveld refinement confirms the austenite L21 structure in Fm-3m space group. Electrical resistivity has been found to clearly exhibiting two different phenomena viz. a magnetic transition from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic and a structural transition from austenite to martensitic phase. Thermo-magnetization measurements M(T) confirms ferromagnetic transition temperature TC at 222 K and martensitic transition starting at 127 K(MS). Magnetization measurement M(H) at 10 K confirms the ferromagnetic state. Frequency dependence of ac susceptibility \c{hi}' at low temperature suggests spin glass behavior in the system. The isothermal magnetic entropy change values have been found to be 1.14 J/Kg.K, 2.69 J/Kg.K and 3.9 J/Kg.K, with refrigeration capacities of 19.6 J/kg, 37.8 J/kg and 54.6 J/kg for the field change of 1, 2 and 3 Tesla respectively at 227 K.

Anomalous magnetism of Pr in PrCoAsO

Detailed magnetization and magneto-transport measurements studies are carried out to unearth the anomalous magnetism of Pr in PrCoAsO compound. The studied PrCoAsO sample is single phase and crystallized in the tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm in analogy of ZrCuSiAs type compounds. Detailed magnetization measurements showed that Co moments in PrCoAsO exhibit weakly itinerant ferromagnetic Co spins ordering at below 80 K with a small magnetic moments of 0.12 muB/f.u. High temperatures Curie-Weiss fit, resulted in effective paramagnetic moment mueff (exp) of 5.91 muB/f.u., which can be theoretically assigned to 3d Co (3.88 muB) and 4f Pr (3.58 muB). Further, a positive Curie- Weiss temperature of 136 K is seen, indicating predominant ferromagnetic interactions in PrCoAsO. Detailed transport measurements showed that PrCoAsO exhibit metallic behavior and negative magneto-resistance below ferro-magnetically (FM) ordered state. Surprisingly, the situation of PrCoAsO is similar to non magnetic La containing LaCoAsO and strikingly different than that as reported for magnetic Nd, Sm and Gd i.e., (Nd/Sm/Gd)CoAsO. The magnetic behavior of PrCoAsO being closed to LaCoAsO and strikingly different to that of (Nd/Sm/Gd)CoAsO is unusual.

Crossover from charge order to strain glass in phase separated manganite thin films: Impact of thermal cycling and substrate induced strain

The magnetic and magnetotransport properties of single crystalline La1-x-yPryCaxMnO3 (x=0.42, y=0.40) thin films (~140 nm) deposited on (110) oriented LaAlO3 and SrTiO3 substrates exhibit a crossover from the high temperature antiferromagnetic-charge ordered insulator (AFM-COI) phase (T>TN) to strain glass (T<Tg). At intermediate temperatures (Tg<T<TN) dynamical liquid having prominent thermal-magneto-resistive hysteresis dominates in the cooling cycle, while in the warming cycle it is preceded by ferromagnetic metal (FMM) phase. Magnetic field required to drive AFM-COI to FMM phase transition are higher than that for the strain glass. The magneto-electric nature and temperature span of the distinct magnetic regimes are sensitive to the thermal cycling and substrate induced strain.

Effect of external pressure on the magnetic properties of $R$CoAsO ($R$ = La, Pr, Sm): a $μ$SR study

We report on a detailed investigation of the itinerant ferromagnets LaCoAsO, PrCoAsO and SmCoAsO performed by means of muon spin spectroscopy upon the application of external hydrostatic pressures $p$ up to $2.4$ GPa. These materials are shown to be magnetically hard in view of the weak dependence of both critical temperatures $T_{C}$ and internal fields at the muon site on $p$. In the cases $R$ = La and Sm, the behaviour of the internal field is substantially unaltered up to $p = 2.4$ GPa. A much richer phenomenology is detected in PrCoAsO instead, possibly associated with a strong $p$ dependence of the statistical population of the two different crystallographic sites for the muon. Surprisingly, results are notably different from what is observed in the case of the isostructural compounds $R$CoPO, where the full As/P substitution is already inducing a strong chemical pressure within the lattice but $p$ is still very effective in further affecting the magnetic properties.

Effect of Se doping in recently discovered layered Bi4O4S3 Superconductor

We report suppression of superconductivity in Bi4O4S3 compound by Se doping at S site. Bulk polycrystalline samples are synthesized by solid state reaction route. The Rietveld refined of XRD data of all the studied samples show that the same are crystallized in tetragonal I4/mmm space group with slightly increased c lattice constant with the Se doping. Superconductivity is observed at below 4.5 K in both dc magnetization and resistivity with temperature measurements for all Bi4O4S3-xSex (x = 0, 0.03, 0.09 and 0.15) samples, though the same is decreased slightly with increase in Se content. The upper critical field of the Bi4O4S3 is estimated from resistivity under magnetic field [R(T)H] measurements of up to 2T (Tesla), and the same decreases for Se doped samples. The flux flow activation energies being obtained by fitting to the the Arrhenius equation are 18.60 meV for Bi4O4S3, 13.69 meV for Bi4O4S2.97Se0.03 and 13.16 meV for Bi4O4S2.85Se0.15 samples in applied magnetic field of 200 Oe. In conclusion the S site Se substitution showed detrimental effect on superconductivity of Bi4O4S3.

Electrical and Magnetic behaviour of PrFeAsO0.8F0.2 superconductor

The superconducting and ground state samples of PrFeAsO0.8F0.2 and PrFeAsO have been synthesised via easy and versatile single step solid state reaction route. X-ray & Reitveld refine parameters of the synthesised samples are in good agreement to the earlier reported value of the structure. The ground state of the pristine compound (PrFeAsO) exhibited a metallic like step in resistivity below 150K followed by another step at 12K. The former is associated with the spin density wave (SDW) like ordering of Fe spins and later to the anomalous magnetic ordering for Pr moments. Both the resistivity anomalies are absent in case of superconducting PrFeAsO0.8F0.2 sample. Detailed high field (up to 12Tesla) electrical and magnetization measurements are carried out for superconducting PrFeAsO0.8F0.2 sample. The PrFeAsO0.8F0.2 exhibited superconducting onset (Tconset) at around 47K with Tc(ρ =0) at 38K. Though the Tconset remains nearly invariant, the Tc(ρ =0) is decreased with applied field, and the same is around 23K under applied field of 12Tesla. The upper critical field (Hc2) is estimated from the Ginzburg Landau equation (GL) fitting, which is found to be ~ 182Tesla. Critical current density (Jc) being calculated from high field isothermal magnetization (MH) loops with the help of Beans critical state model, is found to be of the order of 103 A/cm2. Summarily, the superconductivity characterization of single step synthesised PrFeAsO0.8F0.2 superconductor is presented.

Evolution of superconductivity in PrFe1-xCoxAsO with x = 0.0 to 1.0

We report the synthesis and physical property characterization of PrFe1-xCoxAsO with x = 0.0 to 1.0. The studied samples are synthesized by solid state reaction route via vacuum encapsulation method. The pristine compound PrFeAsO does not show superconductivity, but rather exhibits a metallic step like transition due to spin density wave ordering of Fe moments below 150 K, followed by another upward step due to anomalous ordering of Pr moments at 12 K. Both the Fe-SDW and Pr-TN temperatures decrease monotonically with Co substitution at Fe site. Superconductivity appears in a narrow range of x from 0.07 to 0.25 with maximum Tc at 11.12 K for x = 0.15. Samples, with x = 0.25 exhibit metallic behavior right from 300 K down to 2 K, without any Fe-SDW or Pr-TN steps in resistivity. In fact, though Fe-SDW decreases monotonically, the Pr-TN is disappeared even with x = 0.02. The magneto transport measurements below 14 Tesla on superconducting polycrystalline Co doped PrFeAsO lead to extrapolated values of the upper critical fields [Hc2(0)] of up to 60 Tesla.

Ferromagnetism, insulator-metal transition and magnetotransport in Pr0.58Ca0.42MnO3 films: role of microstructural perturbations

Magnetic and magnetotransport properties of oriented polycrystalline Pr0.58Ca0.42MnO3 thin films prepared in flowing oxygen and air ambient has been investigated. The magnetic ground state of both the films is a frozen cluster glass. In the air annealed film charge order (CO) is quenched and ferromagnetic (FM) transition, which appears at TC=148 K is followed by antiferromagnetic (AFM) transition at TN=104 K. This film shows self-field hysteretic insulator-metal transition (IMT) at TIMC=89 K and TIMW=148 K in the cooling and warming cycle, respectively. Application of magnetic field (H) gradually enhances TIMC and TIMW, reduces the thermoresistive hysteresis and TIM diminishes. In contrast, the film annealed in flowing oxygen shows a CO transition, which is followed by FM and AFM transitions. This film shows appreciably smaller magnetic moment and does not show IMT upto H=20 kOe. As H is increased to H=30 kOe, IMT having strong thermoresistive hysteresis and sharp resistivity jumps appears in the cooling and warming cycles. As H increases to higher values the thermoresistive hysteresis is reduced, resistivity jumps are observed to disappear and TIM decreases. In the lower temperature regime the resistivity first decreases slowly with H and then shows sharp drop. The virgin cycle is not recoverable in subsequent cycles. The decrement far more pronounced in the oxygen annealed film and occurs at much higher H suggesting that the frozen cluster glass state is more robust in this film. The microstructural analysis of the two set of films shows CO quenching, FM transition and self-field IMT in air annealed film is caused by higher density of microstructural disorder and lattice defects. The difference in growth ambience of the two films could give rise to such microstructural perturbations.

Importance of structural distortions in enhancement of transition temperature in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ superconductors

Temperature (12K $\le$ T $\le$ 300K) dependent extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies at the Fe K edge in FeSe$_{1-x}$Te$_x$ (x = 0, 0.5 and 1.0) compounds have been carried out to understand the reasons for increase in T$_C$ upon Te doping in FeSe. While local distortions are present near superconducting onset in FeSe and FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, they seem to be absent in non superconducting FeTe. Of crucial importance is the variation of anion height. In FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$, near superconducting onset, the two heights, $h_{Fe-Se}$ and $h_{Fe-Te}$ show a nearly opposite behaviour. These changes indicate a possible correlation between Fe-chalcogen hybridization and the superconducting transition temperature in these Fe-chalcogenides.

Local structural distortions and their role in superconductivity in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ superconductors

EXAFS studies at the As K edge as a function of temperature have been carried out in SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ ($x$ = 0 and 0.2) compounds to understand the role of local structural distortions superconductivity observed in F doped compound. A significant correlation between thermal variation of local structural parameters like anion height and superconducting onset is found in the fluorinated compound. Such a variation in anion height is absent in non-superconducting compound. Increase in Fe-As bond distance just below superconducting onset temperature indicates a similarity in distortions observed in high T$_C$ cuprates and these Fe based superconductors.

Photoemission studies of the near Fermi level spectral weight shifts in FeSe1-xTex superconductor

Our valence band photoelectron spectroscopic studies show a temperature dependent spectral weight transfer near the Fermi level in the Fe-based superconductor FeSe1-xTex. Using theoretical band structure calculations we have shown that the weight transfer is due to the temperature induced changes in the Fe(Se,Te)4 tetrahedra. These structural changes lead to shifts in the electron occupancy from the xz/yz and x2-y2 orbitals to the 3z2-r2 orbitals indicating a temperature induced crossover from a metallic state to an Orbital Selective Mott (OSM) Phase. Our study presents the observation of a temperature induced crossover to a low temperature OSM phase in the family of Fe chalcogenides.

Robust superconductivity with large upper critical field in Nb2PdS5

We report synthesis, structural details and complete superconducting characterization of very recently discovered Nb2PdS5 new superconductor. The synthesized compound is crystallized in mono-clinic structure. Bulk superconductivity is seen in both magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements with superconducting transition temperature (Tc) at 6K. The upper critical field (Hc2), being estimated from high field magneto-transport measure-ments is above 240kOe. The estimated Hc2(0) is clearly above the Pauli paramagnetic limit. Heat capacity measurements show clear transition with well defined peak at Tc, but with lower jump than as expected for a BCS type superconductor. The Sommerfield constant and Debye temperature as determined from low temperature fitting of heat capacity data are 32mJ/moleK2 and 263K respectively. Hall coefficients and resistivity in conjugation with electronic heat capacity indicates multiple gap superconductivity signatures in Nb2PdS5. We also studied the impact of hydrostatic pressure on superconductivity of Nb2PdS5 and found nearly no change in Tc for the given pressure range.

Role of MgO impurity on the superconducting properties of MgB2

We address the effect of MgO impurity on the superconducting properties of MgB2. The synthesis of MgB2 is very crucial because of sensitivity of Mg to oxidation which may lead to MgO as a secondary phase. Rietveld refinement was performed to determine the quantitative volume fraction of MgO in the samples synthesized by two different techniques. Both the samples were subjected to magnetization measurements under dc and ac applied magnetic fields and the observed results were compared as a function of temperature. Paramagnetic Meissner effect has been observed in a sample of MgB2 having more amount of MgO (with Tc = 37.1K) whereas the pure sample MgB2 having minor quantity of MgO shows diamagnetic Meissner effect with Tc = 38.8K. M-H measurements at 10K reveal a slight difference in irreversibility field which is due to MgO impurity along with wide transition observed from ac magnetic susceptibility measurements. The magnetotransport measurements R(T)H using RN = 90%, 50% and 10% criterion on pure sample of MgB2 has been used to determine the upper critical field whereas the sample having large quantity of MgO does not allow these measurements due to its high resistance.

Significant enhancement of superconductivity under hydrostatic pressure in CeO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor

We report the effect of hydrostatic pressure (0-1.97GPa) on the superconductivity of BiS2 based CeO0.5F0.5BiS2 compound. The CeO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor was synthesized by the solid state reaction route and the compound is crystallized in tetragonal P4/nmm space group. The studied compound shows superconductivity with transition temperature of 2.5K (Tconset) at ambient pressure, which has been enhanced to 8 K at applied pressure of 1.97 GPa. The observed normal resistivity exhibited semiconducting behavior. The data of normal state resistivity R(T) has been fitted by activation type equation and it is found that the energy gap is significantly reduced with pressure. Resistivity measurements under magnetic field for the highest applied pressure of 1.97GPa (Tconset = 8K) exhibits the upper critical field of above 5Tesla. The observation of fourfold increase in Tc accompanied with improved normal state conduction under hydrostatic pressure on CeO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor calls for the attention of solid state physics community.

Superconducting performance of ex-situ SiC-doped MgB2 mono-filamentary tapes

We report on the superconducting performance of the ex-situ SiC doped MgB2 monofilamentary tapes. Polycrystalline powders of MgB2 doped with 5 and 10 wt% SiC were synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction route and characterized for their superconducting performance. It is found that superconducting parameters i.e. upper critical field (Hc2), irreversibility field (Hirr) and critical current density (Jc) are all improved significantly with SiC addition. Also it was found that relatively lower synthesis temperature (700 C) resulted in further improved superconducting parameters. As synthesized powders are used for ex-situ powder-in-tube (PIT) monofilamentary tapes and superconducting parameters are determined. Albeit the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is decreased slightly (2K) for SiC doped tapes, the superconducting performance in terms of critical current density (Jc), being determined from both magnetization and transport measurements, is improved significantly. In particular the SiC doped and 700 °C synthesized MgB2 tapes exhibited the transport Jc of nearly 10^4 A/cm2 under applied fields of as high as 7 Tesla. Further it is found that the Jc anisotropy decreases significantly for SiC doped tapes. Disorder due to substitution of C at B site being created from broken SiC and the presence of nano SiC respectively in SiC added ex-situ MgB2 tapes are responsible for decreased anisotropy and improved Jc(H) performance.

We measure pressure dependent resistivity from 250K to 5K, which shows that the normal state resistivity increases initially for the applied pressures of up to 0.55GPa and then the same is decreased monotonically with increasing pressure of up to 1.97GPa. On the other hand the superconducting transition temperatures (Tconset and TcR=0) increase monotonically with increasing pressure. Namely the Tconset increases from 13K to 25K and TcR=0 from 11.5K to 20K for the pressures range of 0-1.97GPa. Our results suggest that superconductivity in this class of Fe-based compounds is very sensitive to pressure as the estimated pressure coefficient dTc(onset)/dP is 5.8K/GPa. It may be suggested that FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconductor is a strong electron correlated system. The enhancement of Tc with applying pressure is mainly attributed to an increase of charge carriers at Fermi surface.

Superconductivity at 4K in Pd deficient layered Ta_2Pd_xS_6

Here in this short note, we report on the low dimensional 4d and 5d transition metals-chalcogenide based compounds i.e., Ta2PdxS6, showing semiconducting to superconducting transition around 4K with upper critical field outside Pauli paramagnetic limit. It seems couple of different superconducting phases do exist in these new set of compounds. Our short note in this regards is thought provoking, asking to explore various unearthed possible superconducting phases in (Nb/Ta)2Pdx(S/Se/Te)y systems.

Superconductivity in layered CeO0.5F0.5BiS2

We report appearance of superconductivity in CeO0.5F0.5BiS2. The bulk polycrystalline samples CeOBiS2 and CeO0.5F0.5BiS2 are synthesized by conventional solid state reaction route via vacuum encapsulation technique. Detailed structural analysis showed that the studied CeO0.5F0.5BiS2 compound is crystallized in tetragonal P4/nmm space group with lattice parameters a = 4.016(3) A, c = 13.604(2) A. DC magnetization measurement (MT-curve) shows the ferromagnetic signal at the low temperature region. The superconductivity is established in CeO0.5F0.5BiS2 at Tconset = 2.5K by electrical transport measurement. Under applied magnetic field both Tc onset and Tc (ρ =0) decrease to lower temperatures and an upper critical field [Hc2(0)] above 1.2Tesla is estimated. The results suggest coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity for the CeO0.5F0.5BiS2 sample.

Appearance of superconductivity in new BiS2 based layered LaO0.5F0.5BiS2

We report here synthesis, structural, DC magnetization, and transport studies of new BiS2 based layered LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor [1]. The sample was synthesized by conventional solid state route via vacuum encapsulation technique at 800oC for 12h. LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 crystallizes in tetragonal P4/nmm space group with lattice parameters a = 4.0703(5)Å, c = 13.3902(4)Å. Bulk superconductivity is confirmed with superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 2.7K by DC magnetization measurements. The Isothermal magnetization (MH) measurements showed closed loops with clear signatures of flux pinning and irreversible behavior. The resistivity measurements confirmed an onset Tc of 2.7K. The magneto-transport ρ(T,H) measurements showed a resistive broadening and decrease in Tc (ρ=0) to lower temperatures with increasing magnetic field. The magnetic phase diagram involving upper critical and irreversibility fields as a function of temperature has been ascertained. Our DC magnetization and electrical transport measurements confirm the appearance of bulk superconductivity in LaO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor.

Comparative study of magnetic and magnetotransport properties of Sm0.55Sr0.45MnO3 thin films grown on different substrates

Highly oriented polycrystalline SSMO thin films deposited on single crystal substrates by ultrasonic nebulized spray pyrolysis have been studied. The film on LAO is under compressive strain while LSAT and STO are under tensile strain. The presence of a metamagnetic state akin to cluster glass formed due to coexisting FM and antiferromagnetic/charge order (AFM/CO) clusters. All the films show colossal magnetoresistance but its temperature and magnetic field dependence are drastically different. In the lower temperature region the magnetic field dependent isothermal resistivity also shows signature of metamagnetic transitions. The observed results have been explained in terms of the variation of the relative fractions of the coexisting FM and AFM/CO phases as a function of the substrate induced strain and oxygen vacancy induced quenched disorder.

Enhanced superconducting performance of melt quenched Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi-2212) superconductor

We scrutinize the enhanced superconducting performance of melt quench Bismuth based Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi-2212) superconductor. The superconducting properties of melt quenched Bi-2212 (Bi2212-MQ) sample are compared with non-melted Bi2212-NM and Bi1.4Pb0.6Sr2Ca2Cu3O10 (Bi-2223). Crystal structure and morphology of the samples are studied using X-ray diffraction and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) techniques. The high field (14T) magneto-transport and DC/AC magnetic susceptibility techniques are extensively used to study the superconducting properties of the investigated samples. The superconducting critical temperature (Tc) and upper critical field (Hc2) as well as thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) activation energy are estimated from the magneto-resistive [R(T)H] measurements. Both DC magnetization and amplitude dependent AC susceptibility measurements are used to determine the field and temperature dependence of critical current density (Jc) for studied samples. On the other hand, the frequency dependent AC susceptibility is used for estimating flux creep activation energy. It is found that melt quenching significantly enhances the superconducting properties of granular Bi-2212 superconductor. The results are interpreted in terms of better alignment and inter-connectivity of the grains along with reduction of grain boundaries for Bi2212-MQ sample.

Hydrostatic pressure effect on Tc of new BiS2 based Bi4O4S3 and NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 layered superconductors

We investigate the external hydrostatic pressure effect on the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of new layered superconductors Bi4O4S3 and NdO0.5F0.5BiS2. Though the Tc is found to have moderate decrease from 4.8 K to 4.3 K (dTconset/dP = -0.28 K/GPa) for Bi4O4S3 superconductor, the same increases from 4.6 K to 5 K (dTconset/dP = 0.44 K/GPa) upto 1.31 GPa followed by a sudden decrease from 5 K to 4.7 K upto 1.75 GPa for NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor. The variation of Tc in these systems may be correlated to increase or decrease of the charge carriers in the density of states under externally applied pressure.

Hydrostatic pressures dependence of superconductivity in PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor

In this communication, we report the temperature dependence (3 to 300K) of the electrical resistivity of BiS2 based layered PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor at ambient and hydrostatic pressure of up to 3GPa. It is observed that Tc increases with pressure at the rate of dTc/dP=0.45/GPa for PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 compound. It is envisaged that one may increase the Superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of recently discovered PrO0.5F0.5BiS2 superconductor by applying hydrostatic external or internal chemical pressure via suitable on site substitutions.

Impact of Gd doping on morphology and superconductivity of NbN sputtered thin films

We report effect of Gd inclusion in the NbN superconductor thin films. The films are deposited on single crystalline Silicon (100) by DC reactive sputtering technique i.e., deposition of Nb and Gd in presence of reactive N2 gas. The fabricated relatively thick films (400 nm) are crystallized in cubic structure. These films are characterized for their morphology, elemental analysis and roughness by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) respectively. The optimized film (maximum Tc) is achieved with gas ratio of Ar:N2 (80:20) for both pristine and Gd doped films. The optimized NbN film possesses Tc (R=0) in zero and 140kOe fields are at 14.8K and 8.8K respectively. The Gd doped NbN film showed Tc (R=0) in zero and 130kOe fields at 11.2K and 6.8 K respectively. The upper critical field Hc2(0) of the studied superconducting films is calculated from the magneto-transport [R(T)H] measurements using GL equations. It is found that Gd doping deteriorated the superconducting performance of NbN.

Impact of sintering temperature on room temperature magneto-resistive and magneto-caloric properties of Pr2/3Sr1/3MnO3

Magneto-resistive and magneto-caloric properties of polycrystalline Pr2/3Sr1/3MnO3 have been studied as a function of sintering temperature (Ts) between 1260-1450°C. Reitveld refinement of their X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns confirms their single phase crystalline structure with orthorhombic Pbnm space group. The point of maximum value of temperature coefficient of resistance (TCRmax) and Curie temperature (Tc) decreased slightly with Ts. Magneto-resistance (MR) and magnetic entropy (ΔSM) increased markedly with sintering temperature. This could be attributed to the observed sharpness of both the magnetic and resistive transitions due to better grain connectivity. Optimum results are obtained for the sample with Ts = 1400°C. MR at Tc of the same is found to be as large as 32% at 1T and 58% at 5T magnetic fields. The maximum entropy change (ΔSMmax) near its Tc is 2.3Jkg-1K-1 and 7.8 Jkg-1K-1 upon 1T and 5T fields change respectively. These characteristics [MR (32% 1T, 58% 5T) and reasonable change in magnetic entropy (7.8Jkg-1K-1, 5T)] generate possibility that the optimized compound can be used as a potential magnetic refrigerant close to room temperature.

Local electromagnetic properties of magnetic pnictides: A comparative study probed by NMR measurement

75As and 31P NMR studies are performed in PrCoAsO and NdCoPO respectively. The Knight shift data in PrCoAsO indicate the presence of an antiferromagnetic interaction between the 4f moments along the c axis in the ferromagnetic state of Co 3d moments. We propose a possible spin structure in this system. The 75As quadrupolar coupling constant, $ν_Q$ increases continuously with the decrease of temperature and is found to vary linearly with the intrinsic spin susceptibility, Kiso. This indicates a possibility of the presence of a coupling between charge density and spin density fluctuations. Further, 31P NMR Knight shift and spin lattice relaxation rate (1/T1) in the paramagnetic state of NdCoPO indicate that the differences between LaCoPO and NdCoPO with SmCoPO are due to the decrement of inter layer separation and not due to the moments of 4f electrons. Nuclear spin lattice relaxation time (T1) in NdCoPO shows weak anisotropy at 300 K. Using self consistent renormalization (SCR)theory of itinerant ferromagnet, it is shown that in the ab plane, the spin fluctuations are three dimensional ferromagnetic in nature. From SCR theory the important spin fluctuation parameters ($T_0$, $T_A$, $\bar{F}_1$) are evaluated. The similarities and dissimilarities of the NMR results in As and P based systems, with different rare earths have also been discussed.

Magneto-transport and magnetic susceptibility of SmFeAsO1-xFx (x = 0.0 and 0.20)

Bulk polycrystalline samples, SmFeAsO and the iso-structural superconducting SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 are explored through resistivity with temperature under magnetic field ρ(T, H), AC and DC magnetization (M-T), and Specific heat (Cp) measurements. The Resistivity measurement shows superconductivity for x = 0.20 sample with Tc(onset) ~ 51.7K. The upper critical field, [Hc2(0)] is estimated ~3770kOe by Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory. Broadening of superconducting transition in magneto transport is studied through thermally activated flux flow in applied field up to 130 kOe. The flux flow activation energy (U/kB) is estimated ~1215K for 1kOe field. Magnetic measurements exhibited bulk superconductivity with lower critical field (Hc1) of ~1.2kOe at 2K. In normal state, the paramagnetic nature of compound confirms no trace of magnetic impurity which orders ferromagnetically. AC susceptibility measurements have been carried out for SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 sample at various amplitude and frequencies of applied AC drive field. The inter-granular critical current density (Jc) is estimated. Specific heat [Cp(T)] measurement showed an anomaly at around 140K due to the SDW ordering of Fe, followed by another peak at 5K corresponding to the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering of Sm+3 ions in SmFeAsO compound. Interestingly the change in entropy (marked by the Cp transition height) at 5K for Sm+3 AFM ordering is heavily reduced in case of superconducting SmFeAsO0.80F0.20 sample.

Magnetotransport and thermal properties characterization of 55 K superconductor SmFeAsO0.85F0.15

Correlation between structural/microstructural and magneto-thermal transport properties of FeAs-based SmFeAsO and SmFeAsO0.85F0.15 has been studied in detail. The Rietveld analysis of room temperature powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) data reveals that both the samples are single phase, with very small amount of rare earth impurity in the F doped compound. Electron microscopic investigations show that compounds have layered morphology and structure, with the individual grains being surrounded by amorphous layers. The average grain boundary thickness is ~5 nm. The F free material is found to be magnetic and shows the appearance of Fe spin density wave (SDW) like order at T = 150 K. The F doped compound (SmFeAsO0.85F0.15) shows the occurrence of superconductivity at Tc(R=0, H=0)- 55 K, which decreases to 42 K at magnetic field (H) of 13 kOe. The superconducting transition was also confirmed by DC magnetization and AC susceptibility measurements. The intra-grain critical current density (Jc) calculated using the Bean critical state model is found to be around 5.26 x 10^4 A/cm2 at 5 K in zero field (H=0). The dependence of thermally activated flux flow energy (U/KB) on the applied magnetic field has been observed. AC susceptibility measurements at different amplitude of applied AC drive field confirm the granular nature of the superconducting compound. is confirmed. Both Fe (SDW) at 150K for SmFeAsO and 55K superconductivity in case of SmFeAsO0.85F0.15 sample has confirmed by Specific heat [Cp(T)] measurement too. Further Sm orders anti-ferro-magnetically at 4.5K for non-superconducting and at 3.5K for superconducting samples, also the entropy change is reduced significantly for the later than the former. Summarily complete physical property characterization for both non-superconducting SmFeAsO and 55K superconductor SmFeAsO0.85F0.15 samples is provided and discussed in the current article.

Spin dynamics, short-range order and superparamagnetism in superconducting ferromagnet RuSr2Gd1.4Ce0.6Cu2O10-δ

We report structural, detailed DC and linear/non-linear AC, isothermal and thermoremanent magnetization study of the rutheno-cuprate superconducting ferromagnet RuSr2Gd1.4Ce0.6Cu2O10-δ (GdRu-1222). Structural analysis, by employing Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction pattern, reveals that GdRu-1222 crystallizes in tetragonal phase with I4/mmm space group. GdRu-1222 is a reported superconducting ferromagnet with Ru spins magnetic ordering at around 110 K and superconductivity below 40 K in Cu-O2 planes. Detailed linear/non-linear first and higher order harmonic of AC susceptibility studies unveiled the complex magnetism of GdRu-1222. A frequency dependent cusp is observed in AC susceptibility (χac) vs. T measurements. The change in cusp position with applied frequency followed the well known Vogel-Fulcher law, which is a feature to describe a spin-glass (SG) system with possibility of embedded homogeneous/non-homogeneous magnetically interacting/non-interacting ferromagnetic clusters. Such an interpretation is also supported by thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) study at T = 60 K. Detailed interpretation of AC magnetization results revealed the formation of magnetic (ferromagnetic) homogenous/non-homogenous clusters of different sizes embedded in spin-glass (SG) matrix. The magnetization vs. applied field loops do not saturate, even at high applied fields (50 kOe), resulting in the short-range magnetic ordering in the system, which causes the formation of clusters that freeze at low temperatures. Temperature variation of first- and third-order susceptibility harmonics show good agreement with Wohlfarth's model (WM), leading to the superparamagnetism (SPM) state. Detailed magnetization (DC and AC both) results and their analysis helped in explaining the temperature dependent magnetism of the GdRu-1222 system.

Study of Ni and Zn doped CeOFeAs: Effect on the structural transition and specific heat capacity

We have systematically studied the substitution of nonmagnetic Zn and magnetic Ni at iron sites in Ce based oxypnictide. The parent compound (CeOFeAs) shows an anomaly in resistivity around 150 K due to structural transition from tetragonal (space group: P4/nmm) to orthorhombic structure (space group: Cmma). Substitution of Zn suppresses this anomaly to lower temperature (~130 K) but Ni substitution does not show any anomaly around this temperature and the compound behaves like a metal. Further, we find that non magnetic (Zn) doping leads to higher impurity scattering as compared to magnetic Ni doping. Similar to the resistivity measurement, the specific heat shows another jump near 4 K for CeOFeAs. This is attributed to the ordering of Ce3+ moments. This peak shifts to 3.8 K for Zn substituted compound and there is no change in the ordering temperature in the Ni substituted CeOFeAs. These peaks are broadened in applied magnetic field (5 T) and the calculated magnetic entropy tends to saturate at the same value for 0 T and 5 T external magnetic field.

Superconductivity at 5K in NdO0.5F0.5BiS2

We report appearance of superconductivity at 5K in NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 and supplement the discovery [1] of the same in layered sulfide based ZrCuSiAs type compounds. The bulk polycrystalline compound is synthesized by conventional solid state route via vacuum encapsulation technique. Detailed structural analysis showed that the studied compound is crystallized in tetragonal P4/nmm space group with lattice parameters a = 3.9911(3) Å, c = 13.3830(2) Å. Bulk superconductivity is established in NdO0.5F0.5BiS2 at 5K by both transport and magnetic measurements. Electrical transport measurements showed superconducting Tc onset at 5.2K and Tc (ρ=0) at 4.7K. Under applied magnetic field both Tc onset and Tc (ρ =0) decrease to lower temperatures and an upper critical field [Hc2(0)] of above 23kOe is estimated. Both AC and DC magnetic susceptibility measurements showed bulk superconductivity below 5K. Isothermal magnetization (MH) exhibited typical type II behavior with lower critical field (Hc1) of around 15Oe. Isothermal magnetization (MH) exhibited typical type-II behavior with lower critical field (Hc1) of around 15Oe. Specific heat [Cp(T)] is investigated in the temperature range of 1.9-50K in zero external magnetic field. A Schottky-type anomaly is observed at low temperature below 7K. This low temperature Schottky can be attributed to the change in the entropy of the system.

Hump at Tc related to superconducting transition is not observed in heat capacity measurement and rather a Schottky-type anomaly is observed at below ~6K. The compound is slightly semiconducting in normal state. Isothermal magnetization (MH) exhibited typical type II behavior with lower critical field (Hc1) of around 8Oe.

57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic measurements of oxygen deficient LaFeAsO

We report on the magnetic behavior of oxygen deficient LaFeAsO1-x (x-0.10) compound, prepared by one-step synthesis, which crystallizes in the tetragonal (S.G. P4/nmm) structure at room temperature. Resistivity measurements show a strong anomaly near 150 K, which is ascribed to the spin density wave (SDW) instability. On the other hand, dc magnetization data shows paramagnetic-like features down to 5 K, with an effective moment of 0.83 mB/Fe. 57Fe Mossbauer studies (MS) have been performed at 95 and 200 K. The spectra at both temperatures are composed of two sub-spectra. At 200 K the major one (88%), is almost a singlet, and corresponds to those Fe nuclei, which have two oxygen ions in their close vicinity. The minor one, with a large quadrupole splitting, corresponds to Fe nuclei, which have vacancies in their immediate neighborhood. The spectrum at 95 K, exhibits a broadened magnetic split major (84%) sub-spectrum and a very small magnetic splitting in the minor subspectrum. The relative intensities of the subspectra facilitate in estimating the actual amount of oxygen vacancies in the compound to be 7.0(5)%, instead of the nominal LaFeAsO0.90. These results, when compared with reported 57Fe MS of non-superconducting LaFeAsO and superconducting LaFeAsO0.9F0.1, confirm that the studied LaFeAsO0.93 is a superconductivity-magnetism crossover compound of the newly discovered Fe based superconducting family.

Aluminium substitution induced superstructures in Mg1-xAlxB2 (x = 0.0 to 0.50): An X-ray diffraction study

The physical property characterization of Al doped Mg1-xAlxB2 system with x = 0.0 to 0.50 is reported. The results related to phase formation, structural transition, resistivity R(T) and magnetization M(T) measurements are discussed in detail. It is shown that the addition of electrons to MgB2 through Al results in loss of superconductivity. Also seen is a structural transition associated with the collapse of boron layers reflected by the continuous decrease in the c parameter. The main emphasis in this paper is on slow scan X-ray diffraction (XRD) results, which confirm the existence of a superstructure along the c-direction for the x = 0.50 sample. The appearance of some additional peaks, viz. [103], [004], [104] and [112], results in doubling of the lattice parameter along the c-axis. This possibly indicates the alternative ordering of Al and Mg in MgAlB4 separated by hexagonal boron layers but still maintaining the same hexagonal AlB2 type structure.

Anisotropic spin-fluctuations in SmCoPO revealed by 31^P NMR measurement

31^P NMR spectral features in polycrystalline SmCoPO reveal an axially symmetric local magnetic field. At low temperature, the anisotropy of the internal magnetic field increases rapidly, with K_ab increasing faster than that of K_c. The dominant contribution to this anisotropy arises from Sm-4f electron contribution over that of Co-3d. The intrinsic width 2*(Beta) deviates from linearity with respect to bulk susceptibility below 170 K due to the enhancement of (1/T_2)dynamic, which along with the continuous increase of anisotropy in the internal magnetic field is responsible for the wipe out effect of the NMR signal, well above T_C. 1/T_1 shows large anisotropy confirming a significant contribution of Sm-4f electron spin fluctuations to 1/T_1, arising from indirect RKKY type exchange interaction indicating a non-negligible hybridization between Sm-4f orbitals and the conduction band, over the itinerant character of the Co-3d spins. This anisotropy in originates from the orientation dependence of chi"(q,omega). The 3d-spin fluctuations in the ab plane is 2D FM in nature, while along the c-axis, a signature of a weak 2D AFM spin fluctuations superimposed on weak FM spin-fluctuations even in a field of 7 T and far above T_N is observed. The enhancement of this AFM fluctuations of the Co-3d spins along c-axis, at further low temperature is responsible to drive the system to an AFM ordered state.

Anomalous heat capacity and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy of Superconducting FeSe1/2Te1/2

The bulk polycrystalline sample FeSe1/2Te1/2 is synthesized by solid state reaction route in an evacuated sealed quartz tube at 750 oC. The presence of superconductivity is confirmed through magnetization/thermoelectric/resistivity studies. It is found that the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is around 12 K. Heat capacity (Cp) of superconducting FeSe1-xTex exhibited a hump near Tc, instead of well defined Lambda transition. X-ray Photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) studies revealed well defined positions for divalent Fe, Se and Te but with sufficient hybridization of Fe (2p) and Se/Te (3d) core levels. In particular divalent Fe is shifted to higher BE (binding energy) and Se and Te to lower. The situation is similar to that as observed earlier for famous Cu based HTSc (High Tc superconductors), where Cu (3d) orbital hybridizes with O (2p). We also found the satellite peak of Fe at 712.00 eV, which is attributed to charge carrier localization induced by Fe at 2c site.

Anomalous thermoelectric power of Mg1-xAlxB2 system with x = 0.0 to 1.0

Thermoelectric power, S(T) of the Mg1-xAlxB2 system has been measured for x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1.0. XRD, resistivity and magnetization measurements are also presented. It has been found that the thermoelectric power is positive for x = 0.4 and is negative for x = 0.6 over the entire temperature range studied up to 300 K. The thermoelectric power of x = 0.4 samples vanishes discontinuously below a certain temperature, implying existence of superconductivity. In general, the magnitude of the thermoelectric power increases with temperature up to a certain temperature, and then it starts to decrease towards zero base line. In order to explain the observed behavior of the thermoelectric power, we have used a model in which both diffusion and phonon drag processes are combined by using a phenomenological interpolation between the low and high temperature behaviors of the thermoelectric power. The considered model provides an excellent fit to the observed data. It is further found that Al doping enhances the Debye temperature.

Anomalous Thermoelectric power of over-doped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 superconductor

Temperature dependence of thermoelectric power S(T) of three differently processed Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212) samples, viz. as-processed melt quenched (Bi2212-MQ), 6000C N2-annealed (Bi2212-N2) and 6000C O2-annealed (Bi2212-O2) is reported here. All the samples possess single-phase character and their superconducting transition temperatures (TcR=0) are 85 K, 90 K and 72 K respectively for Bi2212-MQ, Bi2212-N2 and Bi2212-O2. While Bi2212-MQ and Bi2212-N2 samples are in near optimum doping regime, Bi2212-O2 is an over-doped sample. TcS=0 values obtained through S(T) data are also in line with those deduced from the temperature dependence of resistance and DC magnetization. Interestingly, S(T) behaviour of the optimally-doped Bi2212-MQ and Bi2212-N2 samples is seen to be positive in whole temperature range, it is found negative for the over-doped Bi2212-O2 sample above TcS=0. These results have been seen in the light of the recent band structure calculations and the ensuing split Fermi surface as determined by angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES).

Appearance and disappearance of superconductivity in SmFe1-xNixAsO (x = 0.0 to 1.0)

Bulk polycrystalline Ni-substituted SmFe1-xNixAsO (x = 0.0 to 1.0) samples are synthesized by solid state reaction route in an evacuated sealed quartz tube. The cell volume decreases with increase of Ni content in SmFe1-xNixAsO, thus indicating successful substitution of smaller ion Ni at Fe site. The resistivity measurements showed that the spin-density-wave (SDW) transition is suppressed drastically with Ni doping and subsequently superconductivity is achieved in a narrow range of x from 0.04 to 0.10 with maximum Tc of 9K at x = 0.06. For higher content of Ni (x > 0.10), the system becomes metallic and superconductivity is not observed down to 2K. The magneto-transport [R(T)H] measurements exhibited the upper critical field [Hc2(0)] of up to 300kOe. The flux flow activation energy (U/kB) is estimated ~98.37K for 0.1T field. Magnetic susceptibility measurements also confirms bulk superconductivity for x = 0.04, 0.06 and 0.08 samples. The lower critical field (Hc1) is around 100Oe at 2K for x = 0.06 sample. Heat capacity CP(T) measurements exhibited a hump like transition pertaining to SDW in Fe planes at around 150K and an AFM ordering of Sm spins below temperature of 5.4K for ordered Sm spins [TN(Sm)]. Though, the SDW hump for Fe spins disappears for Ni doped samples, the TN (Sm) remains unaltered but with a reduced transition height, i.e., decreased entropy. In conclusion, complete phase diagram of SmFe1-xNixAsO (x = 0.0 to 1.0) is studied in terms of its structural, electrical, magnetic and thermal properties.

Appearance and disappearance of superconductivity with Fe site Co substitution in SmFe1-xCoxAsO (x = 0.0 to 1.0)

We report synthesis, structural details and magnetization of SmFe1-xCoxAsO with x ranging from 0.0 to 1.0 at close interval of 0.10. It is found that Co substitutes fully at Fe site in SmFeAsO in an iso-structural lattice with slightly compressed cell. The parent compound exhibited known spin density wave (SDW) character below 150K. Successive doping of Co at Fe site suppressed the SDW transition for x = 0.05 and later induced superconductivity for x = 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 respectively at 14, 15.5 and 9K. The appearance of bulk superconductivity is established by wide open isothermal magnetization M(H) loops. For higher content of Co i.e. x \geq 0.30, superconductivity is not observed. Clearly the Co substitution at Fe site in SmFe1-xCoxAsO diminishes the Fe SDW character (x=0.05), introduces bulk superconductivity for x from 0.10 to 0.20 and finally becomes a non-superconductor. The SmCoAsO also exhibits a secondary AFM like transition at below around 50 K. The reported AFM ordering of Sm spins is seen from heat capacity Cp(T) at 4.5 K and the same remains invariant with Co doping in SmFe1-xCoxAsO. Further the FM ordering of Co-spins (seen in magnetization measurements) is not evident in Cp(T) studies, suggesting weak correlations between ordered Co-spins in these systems.

Bulk Superconductivity in Bismuth-oxy-sulfide Bi4O4S3

Very recent report [1] on observation of superconductivity in Bi4O4S3 could potentially reignite the search for superconductivity in a broad range of layered sulphides. We report here synthesis of Bi4O4S3 at 5000C by vacuum encapsulation technique and basic characterizations. Detailed structural, magnetization, and electrical transport results are reported. Bi4O4S3 is contaminated by small amounts of Bi2S3 and Bi impurities. The majority phase is tetragonal I4/mmm space group with lattice parameters a = 3.9697(2)Å, c = 41.3520(1)Å. Both AC and DC magnetization measurements confirmed that Bi4O4S3 is a bulk superconductor with superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of 4.4K. Isothermal magnetization (MH) measurements indicated closed loops with clear signatures of flux pinning and irreversible behavior. The lower critical field (Hc1) at 2K, of the new superconductor is found to be ~39 Oe. The magneto-transport R(T, H) measurements showed a resistive broadening and decrease in Tc (R=0) to lower temperatures with increasing magnetic field. The extrapolated upper critical field Hc2(0) is ~ 310kOe with a corresponding Ginzburg-Landau coherence length of ~100Å . In the normal state the ρ ~ T2 is not indicated. Our magnetization and electrical transport measurements substantiate the appearance of bulk superconductivity in as synthesized Bi4O4S3. On the other hand same temperature heat treated Bi is not superconducting, thus excluding possibility of impurity driven superconductivity in the newly discovered Bi4O4S3 superconductor.

Chalcogen Height Dependence of Magnetism and Fermiology in FeTe_xSe_{1-x}

FeTexSe1-x (x=0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75 and 1) system has been studied using density functional theory. Our results show that for FeSe, LDA seems better approximation in terms of magnitude of magnetic energy whereas GGA overestimates it largely. On the other hand for FeTe, GGA is better approximation that gives experimentally observed magnetic state. It has been shown that the height of chalcogen atoms above Fe layers has significant effect on band structure, electronic density of states (DOS) at Fermi level N(EF) and Fermi surfaces. For FeSe the value of N(EF) is small so as to satisfy Stoner criteria for ferromagnetism, (I\timesN(EF)\geq1) whereas for FeTe, since the value of N(EF) is large, the same is close to be satisfied. Force minimization done for FeTexSe1-x using supercell approach shows that in disordered system Se and Te do not share same site and have two distinct z coordinates. This has small effect on magnetic energy but no significant difference in band structure and DOS near EF when calculated using either relaxed or average value of z for chalcogen atoms. Thus substitution of Se at Te site decreases average value of chalcogen height above Fe layers which in turn affect the magnetism and Fermiology in the system. By using coherent-potential approximation for disordered system we found that height of chalcogen atoms above Fe layer rather than chalcogen species or disorder in the anion planes, affect magnetism and shape of Fermi surfaces (FS), thus significantly altering nesting conditions, which govern antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations in the system.

Common effect of chemical and external pressures on the magnetic properties of RECoPO (RE = La, Pr)

We report a detailed investigation of RECoPO (RE = La, Pr) and LaCoAsO materials performed by means of muon spin spectroscopy. Zero-field measurements show that the electrons localized on the Pr$^{3+}$ ions do not play any role in the static magnetic properties of the compounds. Magnetism at the local level is indeed fully dominated by the weakly-itinerant ferromagnetism from the Co sublattice only. The increase of the chemical pressure triggered by the different ionic radii of La$^{3+}$ and Pr$^{3+}$, on the other hand, plays a crucial role in enhancing the value of the magnetic critical temperature and can be mimicked by the application of external hydrostatic pressure up to 24 kbar. A sharp discontinuity in the local magnetic field at the muon site in LaCoPO at around 5 kbar suggests a sizeable modification in the band structure of the material upon increasing pressure. This scenario is qualitatively supported by \emph{ab-initio} density-functional theory calculations.

Comparative experimental and Density Functional Theory (DFT) study of the physical properties of MgB2 and AlB2

In present study, we report an inter-comparison of various physical and electronic properties of MgB2 and AlB2. Interestingly, the sign of S(T) is +ve for MgB2 the same is -ve for AlB2. This is consistent our band structure plots. We fitted the experimental specific heat of MgB2 to Debye Einstein model and estimated the value of Debye temperature (theta) and Sommerfeld constant (gamma) for electronic specific heat. Further, from gamma the electronic density of states (DOS) at Fermi level N(EF) is calculated. From the ratio of experimental N (EF) and the one being calculated from DFT, we obtained value of Lembda to be 1.84, thus placing MgB2 in the strong coupling BCS category. The electronic specific heat of MgB2 is also fitted below Tc using pi-model and found that it is a two gap superconductor. The calculated values of two gaps are in good agreement with earlier reports. Our results clearly demonstrate that the superconductivity of MgB2 is due to very large phonon contribution from its stretched lattice. The same two effects are obviously missing in AlB2 and hence it is not superconducting. DFT calculations demonstrated that for MgB2 the majority of states come from Sigma and Pi 2p states of boron on the other hand Sigma band at Fermi level for AlB2 is absent. This leads to a weak electron phonon coupling and also to hole deficiency as Pi bands are known to be of electron type and hence obviously the AlB2 is not superconducting. The DFT calculations are consistent with the measured physical properties of the studied borides, i.e., MgB2 and AlB2

Crossing point phenomena (T* = 2.7 K) in specific heat curves of superconducting ferromagnets RuSr2Gd1.4Ce0.6Cu2O10-δ

Crossing point phenomena are one of the interesting and still puzzling effects in strongly correlated electron systems. We have synthesized RuSr2Gd1.4Ce0.6Cu2O10-δ (GdRu-1222) magneto-superconductor through standard solid state reaction route and measured its magnetic, transport and thermal properties. We also synthesized RuSr2Eu1.4Ce0.6Cu2O10-δ (EuRu-1222) then measured its heat capacity in zero magnetic fields for reference. The studied compounds crystallized in tetragonal structure with space group I4/mmm. GdRu-1222 is a reported magneto-superconductor with Ru spins magnetic ordering at temperature around 110 K and superconductivity in Cu-O2 planes below around 40 K. To explore the crossing point phenomena, the specific heat [Cp (T)] was investigated in temperature range 1.9-250 K, under magnetic field of up to 70 kOe. Unfortunately though no magnetic and superconducting transitions are observed in specific heat, a Schottky type anomaly is observed at low temperatures below 20 K. This low temperature Schottky type anomaly can be attributed to splitting of the ground state spectroscopic term 8S7/2 of paramagnetic Gd3+ ions by both internal and external magnetic fields. It was also observed that Cp (T) being measured for different values of magnetic field, possesses the same crossing point (T* = 2.7 K), up to the applied magnetic field 70 kOe. A quantitative explanation of this phenomenon, based on its shape and temperature dependence of the associated generalized heat capacity (Cp), is presented. This effect supports the crossing point phenomena, which is supposed to be inherent for strongly correlated systems.

Effect of 3d Metal (Co and Ni) Doping on the Superconductivity of FeSe0.5Te0.5

We report the effect of 3d metal Cobalt (Co) and Nickel (Ni) doping on the FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconductor with the nominal composition range Fe1-xMxTe0.5Se0.5 (M = Co, Ni and x = 0.00, 0.01 0.02, 0.05, and 0.10). Samples are synthesized through standard solid state reaction route and all are crystallize in single phase tetragonal structure with space group P4nmm. The lattice parameters 'a', 'c' and volume decrease with increase in Co and Ni content, although not monotonically. In fact the 'a' lattice parameter of Co doped samples is nearly unaffected for Co doped samples. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) is measured from both DC and AC magnetic susceptibility, which decrease with increase in Ni or Co content. Both Co and Ni suppress Tc and drive the system into the normal state. Interestingly, Ni suppresses the superconductivity much faster than the Co. This indicates less effect on in-plane Fe-Se distances and thus reduced disorder in case of Co when compared with Ni substation at Fe site in FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconductor. It is concluded that in-plane disorder on superconducting Fe-Se and Fe-Se-Se planes directly affects superconductivity in FeTe0.5Se0.5 superconductor.

Effect of Boron substitution on the superconductivity of non-oxide perovskite MgCNi3

We report synthesis, structural and magnetic (DC and AC) properties of Boron substituted MgCNi3 superconductor. A series of polycrystalline bulk samples Mg1.2C1.6-xBxNi3 (x = 0.0, 0.08 and 0.16) is synthesized through standard solid-state reaction route, which are found to crystallize in cubic perovskite structure with space group Pm3m. Rietveld analysis of observed XRD data show that lattice parameters expand from a = 3.8106 (4) Å for pure, to 3.8164 (2) Å and 3.8173 (5) Å for 5% and 10% Boron substituted samples respectively. DC magnetization exhibited superconducting transition (Tc) at around 7.3 K for pure sample, and the same decreases slightly with Boron substitution. The lower critical field (Hc1) at 2 K is around 150 Oe for pure sample, which increases slightly with Boron substitution. For pure sample the upper critical field (Hc2) being determined from AC susceptibility measurements is 11.6 kOe and 91.70 kOe with 50% and 90% diamagnetism criteria respectively, which decreases to 5.57 kOe and 42.5 kOe respectively for 10% Boron substituted sample. 10% Boron substitution at Carbon site has decreased both the Hc2 and Tc. On the other hand lower critical field (Hc1) at 2 K is slightly increased from around 150 Oe for pure sample, to 200 Oe for 10% Boron substituted sample. Seemingly, the Carbon site Boron substitution induced disorder though has increased slightly the Hc1 but with simultaneous decrease in superconducting transition temperature (Tc) and upper critical field (Hc2). The high relative proportion of Ni in studied MgCNi3 suggests that magnetic interactions are important and non-oxide perovskite structure make it interesting.

Effect of synthesis temperature on superconducting properties of n-SiC added bulk MgB2 superconductor

We study the effect of synthesis temperature on the phase formation in nano(n)-SiC added bulk MgB2 superconductor. In particular we study: lattice parameters, amount of carbon (C) substitution, microstructure, critical temperature (Tc), irreversibility field (Hirr), critical current density (Jc), upper critical field (Hc2) and flux pinning. Samples of MgB2+(n-SiC)x with x=0.0, 0.05 & 0.10 were prepared at four different synthesis temperatures i.e. 850, 800, 750, and 700oC with the same heating rate as 10oC/min. We found 750oC as the optimal synthesis temperature for n-SiC doping in bulk MgB2 in order to get the best superconducting performance in terms of Jc, Hc2 and Hirr. Carbon (C) substitution enhances the Hc2 while the low temperature synthesis is responsible for the improvement in Jc due to the smaller grain size, defects and nano-inclusion induced by C incorporation into MgB2 matrix, which is corroborated by elaborative HRTEM (high-resolution transmission electron microscopy) results. We optimized the the Tc(R=0) of above 15K for the studied n-SiC doped and 750 0C synthesized MgB2 under 140 KOe field, which is one of the highest values yet obtained for variously processed and nano-particle added MgB2 in literature to our knowledge.

Enhanced Critical parameters of nano-Carbon doped MgB2 Superconductor

The high field magnetization and magneto transport measurements are carried out to determine the critical superconducting parameters of MgB2-xCx system. The synthesized samples are pure phase and the lattice parameters evaluation is carried out using the Rietveld refinement. The R-T(H) measurements are done up to a field of 140 kOe. The upper critical field values, Hc2 are obtained from this data based upon the criterion of 90% of normal resistivity i.e. Hc2=H at which Rho=90%Rho; where RhoN is the normal resistivity i.e., resistivity at about 40 K in our case. The Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg (WHH) prediction of Hc(0) underestimates the critical field value even below than the field up to which measurement is carried out. After this the model, the Ginzburg Landau theory (GL equation) is applied to the R-T(H) data which not only calculates the Hc2(0) value but also determines the dependence of Hc2 on temperature in the low temperature high field region. The estimated Hc(0)=157.2 kOe for pure MgB2 is profoundly enhanced to 297.5 kOe for the x=0.15 sample in MgB2-xCx series. Magnetization measurements are done up to 120 kOe at different temperatures and the other parameters like irreversibility field, Hirr and critical current density Jc(H) are also calculated. The nano carbon doping results in substantial enhancement of critical parameters like Hc2, Hirr and Jc(H) in comparison to the pure MgB2 sample.

Enhanced Room Temperature Coefficient of Resistance and Magneto-resistance of Ag-added La0.7Ca0.3-xBaxMnO3 Composites

In this paper we report an enhanced temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) close to room temperature in La0.7Ca0.3-xBaxMnO3 + Agy (x = 0.10, 0.15 and y = 0.0 to 0.40) (LCBMO+Ag) composite manganites. The observed enhancement of TCR is attributed to the grain growth and opening of new conducting channels in the composites. Ag addition has also been found to enhance intra-granular magneto-resistance. Inter-granular MR, however, is seen to decrease with Ag addition. The enhanced TCR and MR at / near room temperature open up the possibility of the use of such materials as infrared bolometric and magnetic field sensors respectively.

Fe ion doping effect on electrical and magnetic properties of La0.7Ca0.3Mn1-xFexO3 x = 0.0 to 1.0

Here we report the structural, electrical and magnetic properties of Fe doped La0.7Ca0.3Mn1-xFexO3 with x = 0.0 to 1.0 prepared by conventional solid state reaction method. Simulated data on XRD shows an increase in volume with an increase in Fe ion concentration. XPS supports that Fe3+ ions directly substitute Mn3+ ions. Shifting towards lower wave-number and symmetric IR band structure confirms increase in volume and homogeneous distribution of Fe ions. Fe ion doesn't contribute in double-exchange (DE) conduction mechanism due to its stable half filled 3d orbital. The presence of Fe3+ ions encourages anti-ferromagnetism (AFM) generated by super-exchange interaction and suppress insulator-metal transition temperature (TIM). Magnetic measurements show the existence of magnetic polarons supported by increase in volume of unit cell and deviation from Curie-Weiss law.

High field magneto-transport and magnetization study of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-δ(x = 0.0-0.25)

We report DC isothermal magnetization, global critical current density (JC), Intra-grain critical current density (JCintra) and resistive upper critical field (Bc2) of polycrystalline Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-δ (YBCO); x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20 and 0.25. Ca doping at Y sites in YBCO superconductor results in flux pinning property, which can enhance the critical current density and upper critical fields. JC and JCintra are experimentally calculated through DC isothermal magnetization measurement (M-H), employing the well known Bean's critical model. It is observed that both type of current densities (global and intra) enhance with lower doped (5%) samples and can be accounted in terms of reaching maximum of pinning centers and improved grain couplings nature. The upper critical field (Bc2) increases with Ca content being consistent with enhanced grain coupling nature of doped samples.

Hump Structure below Tc in the thermal conductivity of MgB2 superconductor

A reasonable cause of absence of hump structure in thermal conductivity of MgB2 below the superconducting transition temperature (Tc) lies in the appearance of multigap structure. The gaps of lower magnitude can be suppressed by defects so that this system becomes effectively a single gap superconductor. When such a situation is created, it is hoped that thermal conductivity will show hump below Tc. Proceeding along these lines, a sample of MgB2 with a relatively higher residual resistivity (33.3 mili-Ohm-cm)has been found to show a hump structure below Tc. The actual electronic thermal conductivity kel of this sample is less than that expected from the Wiedeman- Franz law by more than a factor of 2.6 in the considered temperature range. Modifying the Wiedeman- Franz law for the electronic contribution by replacing the Lorenz number by an effective Lorenz number Leff (L0) we have obtained two sets of kel, namely those with Leff = 0.1L0 and 0.2L0. Corresponding to these two sets of kel, two sets of the phonon thermal conductivity kph are obtained. kph has been analyzed in terms of an extended Bardeen- Rickayzen- Tewordt theory. The main result of this analysis is that the hump structure corresponds to a gap ratio of 3.5, and that large electron-point defect scattering is the main source of drastic reduction of the electronic thermal conductivity from that given by the usual Wiedeman- Franz law.

Induction of superconductivity by sulphur doping in FeTe system and post effect of low temperature oxygen annealing

Here, we report the synthesis and characterization of sulphur-substituted iron telluride i.e. FeTe1-xSx; (x = 0-30 %) system and study the impact of low temperature oxygen (O2) annealing as well. Rietveld analysis of room temperature x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns shows that all the compounds are crystallized in a tetragonal structure (space group P4/nmm) and no secondary phases are observed. Lattice constants are decreased with increasing S concentration. The parent compound of the system i.e. FeTe does not exhibit superconductivity but shows an anomaly in the resistivity measurement at around 78 K, which corresponds to a structural phase transition. Heat capacity Cp(T) measurement also confirms the structural phase transition of FeTe compound. Superconductivity appears by S substitution; the onset of superconducting transition temperature is about 8 K for FeTe0.75S0.25 sample. Thermoelectric power measurements S(T) also shows the superconducting transition at around 7 K for FeTe0.75S0.25 sample. The upper critical fields Hc2(10%), Hc2(50%) and Hc2(90%) are estimated to be 400, 650 and 900 kOe respectively at 0 K by applying Ginzburg Landau (GL) equation. Interestingly, superconducting volume fraction is increased with low temperature (200 oC) O2 annealing at normal pressure. Detailed investigations related to structural (XRD), transport [S(T), R(T)H], magnetization (AC and DC susceptibility) and thermal [Cp(T)] measurements for FeTe1-xS:O2 system are presented and discussed.

Intriguing complex magnetism of Co in RECoAsO (RE=La, Nd and Sm)

We synthesized bulk polycrystalline samples of RECoAsO (RE=La, Nd and Sm) by solid state reaction route in an evacuated sealed quartz tube. All these compounds are crystallized in a tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm. The Co, in these compounds is in itinerant ferromagnetic state with its paramagnetic moment above 1.5 microB and the same orders ferromagnetically (FM) with small saturation moment of around 0.20 microB below say 80K. This bulk intrinsic magnetism of Co changes dramatically when nonmagnetic La is changed by magnetic Sm and Nd. Although the itinerant ferromagnetism occurs below 80-100K with small saturation moment, typical anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) transitions (TN1, TN2) are observed at 57K and 45K for Sm and at 69K and 14K for Nd. The transition of Co spins from FM to AFM, for magnetic Sm and Nd in RECoAsO is both field and temperature dependent. For applied fields below 100Oe, both TN1 and TN2 are seen, with intermediate fields below 1-2kOe only TN1 and above say 5kOe the AFM transition is not observed. This is evidenced in isothermal magnetization (MH) plots as well. It is clear that Sm/Nd magnetic moments interact with the ordered Co spins in adjacent layer and thus transforms the FM ordering to AFM. All the studied compounds are metallic in nature, and their magneto-transport R(T)H follows the temperature and field dependent FM-AFM transition of ordered Co spins.

Magnetic phase transitions in SmCoAsO

Magnetization, x-ray diffraction and specific-heat measurements reveal that SmCoAsO undergoes three magnetic phase transitions. A ferromagnetic transition attributed to the Co ions, emerges at TC=57 K with a small saturation moment of 0.15muB/Co. Reorientation of the Co moment to an antiferromagnetic state is obtained at TN2=45 K. The relative high paramagnetic effective moment Peff=1.57 MuB/Co indicates an itinerant ferromagnetic state of the Co sublattice. The third magnetic transition at TN1=5 K is observed clearly in the specific-heat study only. Both magnetic and 57Fe Mossbauer studies show that substitution of small quantities of Fe for Co was unsuccessful.

Magnetization and Magneto-resistance in Y(Ba1-xSrx)2Cu3O7-δ (x = 0.00 - 0.50) superconductor

Here we present the magnetic properties and upper critical field (BC2) of polycrystalline Y(Ba1-xSrx)2Cu3O7-δ superconductors, which are being determined through detailed ac/dc susceptibility and resistivity under magnetic field (RTH) study. All the samples are synthesized through solid state reaction route. Reduction in Meissner fraction (the ratio of field cooled to zero field cooled magnetization) is observed with increasing Sr content, suggesting occurrence of flux pining in the doped samples. The ac susceptibility and resistivity measurements reveal improved grain couplings in Sr substituted samples. Consequently the inter-grain critical current density (Jc), upturn curvature near the Tc in temperature dependence of upper critical field [BC2(T)], and BC2 are enhanced. Both Jc and BC2 increase in lower Sr substitution (up to x = 0.10) samples followed by decrease in higher doping due to degradation in effective pining and grain coupling.

Magnetotransport of La0.70ca0.3-xsrxmno3 (Ag): A Potential Room Temperature Bolometer and Magnetic Sensor

Here we report the optimized magneto-transport properties of polycrystalline La0.70Ca0.3-xSrxMnO3 and their composites with Ag. The optimization was carried out by varying the Sr and Ag contents simultaneously to achieve large temperature coefficient of resistance (TCR) as well as low field magneto-resistance (MR) at room temperature. Sharpest paramagnetic (PM)-ferromagnetic (FM) and insulator-metal (IM) transition is observed in the vicinity of the room temperature (TC=300 K=TIM) for the composition La0.70Ca0.20Sr00.10MnO3:Ag0.20. Partial substitution of larger Sr2+ ions at the Ca2+ ions sites controls the magnitude of the FM and IM transition temperatures, while the Ag induces the desired sharpness in these transitions. For the optimized composition, maximum TCR and MR are tuned to room temperature (300 K) with the former being as high as 9% and the later being 20 and 30 percent at 5 and 10 kOe magnetic fields respectively. Such sharp single peak (TCR= 9 percent) at room temperature can be used for the bolometric and infrared detector applications. The achievement of large TCR and low field MR at T~300K in polycrystalline samples is encouraging and we believe that further improvements can be achieved in thin films, which, by virtue of their low conduction noise, are more suitable for device applications.

Physical property and electronic structure characterization of bulk superconducting Bi3Ni

We report the experimental and theoretical study on magnetic nature of Bi3Ni system. The structure is found to be orthorhombic (Pnma) with lattice parameters a = 8.879Å b = 4.0998Å and c = 4.099Å. The title compound is synthesized via a solid state reaction route by quartz vacuum encapsulation of 5N purity stoichiometric ingredients of Ni and Bi. The superconducting transition temperature is found to be 4.1 K as confirmed from magnetization and specific heat measurements. The lower critical field (Hc1) and irreversibility field (Hirr) are around 150 and 3000Oe respectively at 2K. Upper critical field (Hc2) as determined from in field (up to 4 Tesla) ac susceptibility is found to be around 2 Tesla at 2K. The normal state specific heat is fitted using Sommerfeld-Debye equation C(T) = γT + βT3+δT5 and the parameters obtained are γ= 11.08mJ/mol-K2, β= 3.73mJ/mol-K4 and δ= 0.0140mJ/mol-K6. The calculated electronic density of states (DOS) at Fermi level N(EF) and Debye temperature ΘD are 4.697 states/eV per formula unit and 127.7K respectively. We also estimated the value of electron phonon coupling constant (λ) to be 1.23, which when substituted in MacMillan equation gives Tc = 4.5K. Density functional (DFT) based calculations for experimentally determined lattice parameters show that Ni in this compound is non-magnetic and ferromagnetic interactions seem to play no role. The Stoner condition I*N(EF) = 0.136 per Ni atom also indicates that system cannot have any ferromagnetism. The fixed spin moment (FSM) calculations by fixing total magnetic moment on the unit cell also suggested that this system does not exhibit any signatures of ferromagnetism.

Physical Property Characterization of Bulk MgB2 Superconductor

We report synthesis, structure/micro-structure, resistivity under magnetic field [R(T)H], Raman spectra, thermoelectric power S(T), thermal conductivity K(T), and magnetization of ambient pressure argon annealed polycrystalline bulk samples of MgB2, processed under identical conditions. The compound crystallizes in hexagonal structure with space group P6/mmm. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals electron micrographs showing various types of defect features along with the presence of 3-4nm thick amorphous layers forming the grain boundaries of otherwise crystalline MgB2. Raman spectra of the compound at room temperature exhibited characteristic phonon peak at 600 cm-1. Superconductivity is observed at 37.2K by magnetic susceptibility C(T), resistivity R(T), thermoelectric power S(T), and thermal conductivity K(T) measurements. The power law fitting of R(T) give rise to Debye temperature at 1400K which is found consistent with the theoretical fitting of S(T), exhibiting ThetaD of 1410K and carrier density of 3.81x 1028/m3. Thermal conductivity K(T) shows a jump at 38K, i.e., at Tc, which was missing in some earlier reports. Critical current density (Jc) of up to 105 A/cm2 in 1-2T (Tesla) fields at temperatures (T) of up to 10K is seen from magnetization measurements. The irreversibility field, defined as the field related to merging of M(H) loops is found to be 78, 68 and 42 kOe at 4, 10 and 20K respectively. The superconducting performance parameters viz. irreversibility field (Hirr) and critical current density Jc(H) of the studied MgB2 are improved profoundly with addition of nano-SiC and nano-Diamond. The physical property parameters measured for polycrystalline MgB2 are compared with earlier reports and a consolidated insight of various physical properties is presented.

Physical property characterization of single step synthesized NdFeAsO0.80F0.20 bulk 50K superconductor

We report an easy single step synthesis route of title compound NdFeAsO0.80F0.20 superconductor having bulk superconductivity below 50 K. The title compound is synthesized via solid-state reaction route by encapsulation in an evacuated (10-3 Torr) quartz tube. Rietveld analysis of powder X-ray diffraction data shows that compound crystallized in tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm. R(T)H measurements showed superconductivity with Tc (R=0) at 48 K and a very high upper critical field (Hc2) of up to 345 Tesla. Magnetic measurements exhibited bulk superconductivity in terms of diamagnetic onset below 50 K. The lower critical field (Hc1) is around 1000 Oe at 5 K. In normal state i.e., above 60 K, the compound exhibited purely paramagnetic behavior and thus ruling out the presence of any ordered FeOx impurity in the matrix. In specific heat measurements a jump is observed in the vicinity of superconducting transition (Tc) along with an upturn at below T=4 K due to the AFM ordering of Nd+3 ions in the system. The Thermo-electric power (TEP) is negative down to Tc, thus indicating dominant carriers to be of n-type in NdFeAsO0.80F0.20 superconductor. The granularity of the bulk superconducting NdFeAsO0.8F0.2 sample is investigated and the intra and inter grain contributions have been individuated by looking at various amplitude and frequencies of the applied AC drive magnetic field.

Role of Carbon in Enhancing the Performance of MgB2 superconductor

The enhancement of the critical current density (Jc(H)) of carbon and nano-SiC doped MgB2 is presented and compared. The upper critical field (Hc2) being determined from resistivity under magnetic field experiments is though improved for both C substitution and nano-SiC addition the same is more pronounced for the former. In MgB2-xCx carbon is substituted for boron that induces disorder in the boron network and acts as internal pinning centres. The optimal Jc(H) values are obtained for x = 0.1 sample . In case of nano-SiC doped in MgB2, the Jc(H) improves more profoundly and two simultaneous mechanisms seems responsible to this enhancement. Highly reactive nano-SiC releases free carbon atom, which gets easily incorporated into the MgB2 lattice to act as intrinsic pinning centres. Further enhancement is observed for higher nano-SiC concentrations, where the un-reacted components serve as additional extrinsic pinning centres.

Role of interstitial "caged" Fe in the superconductivity of FeTe1/2Se1/2

All samples are synthesized through standard solid state reaction route and are quenched to room temperature systematically at 7000C, 5000C, 3000C and room temperature (RT); named as 700Q, 500Q, 300Q and RTQ respectively. The structural and magnetic properties are studied. Careful Reitveld analysis of XRD patterns revealed that though all samples except 700Q are crystallized in single phase with space group P4/nmm, the presence of interstitial Fe (Feint) at 2c site is increased from 5% for RTQ to 8% for 500Q. The 700Q sample is crystallized in Fe7Se8 phase. The transport and magnetization results revealed that though RTQ and 300Q are superconducting at 10 K and 13 K respectively, while the 500Q and 700Q are not. Magnetic ordering (Tmag) is observed at around 125 K for all the samples. The prominence of Tmag in terms of effective moment is sufficiently higher for 500Q and 700Q than RTQ and 300Q. Summarily it is found that quenching induced disorder affects the occupancy of interstitial Fe in FeTe1/2Se1/2 and thus both its superconducting and magnetic properties. Further it clear that limited presence of interstitial Fe at 2c site is not fully against observation of superconductivity, because 300Q sample possesses higher Tc (13 K) for higher Feint (6%) than RTQ sample with relatively lower Tc (10 K) having lower Feint (5%). Further the 500Q sample with much higher Feint (8%) is though non-superconducting.

Room temperature magnetic entropy change and magnetoresistance in La_{0.70}(Ca_{0.30-x}Sr_x)MnO_3:Ag 10% (x = 0.0-0.10)

The magnetic and magnetocaloric properties of polycrystalline La0.70(Ca0.30-xSrx)MnO3:Ag 10% manganite have been investigated. All the compositions are crystallized in single phase orthorhombic Pbnm space group. Both, the Insulator-Metal transition temperature (TIM) and Curie temperature (Tc) are observed at 298 K for x = 0.10 composition. Though both TIM and Tc are nearly unchanged with Ag addition, the MR is slightly improved. The MR at 300 K is found to be as large as 31% with magnetic field change of 1Tesla, whereas it reaches up to 49% at magnetic field of 3Tesla for La0.70Ca0.20Sr0.10MnO3:Ag0.10 sample. The maximum entropy change (\DeltaSMmax) is 7.6 J.Kg-1.K-1 upon the magnetic field change of 5Tesla, near its Tc (300.5 K). The La0.70Ca0.20Sr0.10MnO3:Ag0.10 sample having good MR (31%1Tesla, 49%3Tesla) and reasonable change in magnetic entropy (7.6 J.Kg-1.K-1, 5 Tesla) at 300 K can be a potential magnetic refrigerant material at ambient temperatures.

Single step synthesis of Sr4V2O6Fe2As2: The blocking layer based potential future superconductor

We report synthesis, structural details and transport measurements on Sr4V2O6Fe2As2. Namely the stoichiometric amounts of V2O5 + SrO2 + Sr + 2FeAs are weighed mixed, ground thoroughly and palletized in rectangular form in a glove box in high purity Ar atmosphere. The pellet is further sealed in an evacuated (10-5 Torr) quartz tube and put for heat treatments at 750 and 1150 0C in a single step for 12 and 36 hours respectively. Finally the quartz ampoule is allowed to cool naturally to room temperature. The as synthesized sample is black in color. The compound crystallized in P4/nmm space group with lattice parameters a = b = 3.925A and c = 15.870A. Also seen are some small impurity lines. The compound did not exhibit superconductivity but instead a spin density wave (SDW) like metallic step at around 175 K is seen in R(T) measurements

Structural and Magnetic Properties of Co1-xFexSr2YCu2O7 compounds

Here we study the structural and magnetic properties of the CoFeSr2YCu2O7 compound with x = 0.0 to 1.0. X-ray diffraction patterns and simulated data obtained from Rietveld refinement of the same indicate that the iron ion replacement in CoFeSr2YCu2O7 induces a change in crystal structure. The orthorhombic Ima2 space group structure of Co-1212 changes to tetragonal P4/mmm with increasing Fe ion. The XPS studies reveal that both Co and Fe ions are in mixed states for the former and in case of later.Although none of the studied as synthesized samples in CoFeSr2YCu2O7 are superconducting, the interesting structural changes in terms of their crystallisation space groups and the weak magnetism highlights the rich solid state chemistry of this class of materials.

Structural, electrical, magnetic and thermal studies of Cr-doped La0.7Ca0.3Mn1-xCrxO3 for x = 0.0 to 1.0 manganites

We report detailed structural, electrical, magnetic and specific heat studies on La0.7Ca0.3Mn1-xCrxO3 manganites. Rietveld analysis of fitted and observed XRD patterns exhibited the single-phase nature of all the studied materials, which crystallize in Pbnm space group. Successive substitution of Cr at Mn site in La0.7Ca0.3Mn1-xCrxO3 manganites increases the electrical resistivity and decrease the characteristic insulator-metal transition temperature (TIM) of the parent compound along with a hump like feature for higher Cr-content samples. The hump structure basically signifies the onset of anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) interactions as inferred by both the magnetic and infra-red (IR) spectroscopy studies. The systematic suppression of FM state results in a spin glass (SG) like behavior. IR studies revealed that the vibration mode at 413 cm-1 being associated with internal bending of MnO6 octehedra, becomes softer, indicating an increase in distortion and hence the possible spin glass behavior. The critical exponents alpha, beta and gama are calculated from the heat capacity (CP) data near the TIM/TFM. The same exhibited variations of their values with doping. In particular the value of beta increases from 0.37 to 0.43, clearly indicating the coexistence of both long and short range magnetic orders i.e. tendency towards SG state for Cr doped samples. On the basis of present results, it is suggested that Cr dilutes double-exchange (DE) based FM and rather promotes the AFM based super exchange interactions (SE) via Cr3+/Mn4+ ions. Substitution of Cr systematically destroys both the metallic state and long range ferromagnetic (FM) order.

Structure and Charge transfer Mechanism in Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-δ through direct doping

Here we study the effect of Ca doping on charge transfer mechanism of polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-δ compound. The samples of composition Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-δ (x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20 and 0.30) are synthesized through standard solid state reaction route. Carrier doping is controlled by annealing of samples in oxygen and subsequently in reducing atmosphere. Samples are investigated using resistivity, dc magnetization (M-T) and magnetization with field (M-H) measurements. With increase of Ca the transition temperature (Tc) decreases in oxygenated samples, whereas the same increases in reduced samples. Further reduction of samples at higher temperatures (> 600 0C) though results in non-superconducting nature up to Ca concentration of x = 0.20, the x = 0.30 sample is superconducting below 30K. This provides a remarkably simple and effective way to study the relationship between structure, superconductivity, and associated electronic properties. Variations in Cu1-O4, Cu2-O4 and Cu2-O2 bond lengths with oxygen content, is seen through the structural refinement of XRD pattern. The effective coordination of Cu2 atom with oxygen changes with the change in theses bond lengths and hence the holes in the CuO2 planes. The charge transfer mechanism from CuOx chains to CuO2 planes and thus effective hole doping is discussed in context of observed results.

Study of spin glass and cluster ferromagnetism in RuSr2Eu1.4Ce0.6Cu2O10-δ magneto Superconductor

We report DC magnetization, detailed systematic linear and nonlinear AC magnetic susceptibility and transport for a single phase RuSr2Eu1.4Ce0.6Cu2O10-δ (EuRu-1222) magneto-superconductor. The studied sample is synthesized through standard solid state reaction route, which is crystallized in single phase tetragonal structure with space group I4/mmm. DC magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed that the studied EuRu-1222 is a magneto-superconductor with Ru spins ordering at around 110 K and superconductivity in the Cu-O2 planes below \approx 30 K. Temperature dependence of AC susceptibility with different frequency and amplitude variations confirms spin-glass behavior with cluster ferromagnetism of the system. Change in the cusp position with frequency follows the Vogel-Fulcher law, which is commonly accepted feature for a spin-glass (SG) system with ferromagnetic clusters. The third harmonic of AC susceptibility (\c{hi}3) shows that the system undergoes a spin glass transition below 80 K. Superconducting transition temperature (Tc) onset and ρ = 0 are seen at around 30 and 18 K without any applied field and the same decreases to 10 and 2 K under 130 kOe applied field. Also low fields isothermal (MH) suggests that ferromagnetic clusters are embedded in spin-glass (SG) matrix. The magnetization vs. applied field (MH) loops exhibited ferromagnetic (FM) like behavior with rather small coercive fields. Detailed AC magnetic susceptibility measurements are carried out to unearth the short range magnetic correlations. These results support the spin-glass (SG) formation followed by ferromagnetic clustering effects at low temperatures. Our detailed magnetization and magneto transport results will undoubtedly contribute to current understanding of the complex magnetism of the EuRu-1222 system.

Successive spin glass, cluster ferromagnetic, and superparamagnetic transitions in RuSr2Y1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 complex magneto-superconductor

We report structural, DC magnetization, detailed linear/non-linear AC susceptibility, (with applied frequency and amplitude) isothermal and thermoremanent magnetization (TRM) behavior for RuSr2Y1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 (YRu-1222) magneto-superconductor to understand its complex magnetism. Studied sample is synthesized through the novel solid state High Pressure (6 GPa) High Temperature (1450oC) (HPHT) technique. The compound is crystallized in tetragonal structure with space group I4/mmm (No. 139). DC magnetic susceptibility shows that studied YRu-1222 is magneto-superconducting with Ru spins magnetic ordering at around 110 K and superconductivity (SC) in the Cu-O2 planes below ~ 30 K. Frequency and field dependent detailed AC magnetic susceptibility measurements confirms the spin-glass (SG) behavior with homogeneous/non-homogeneous ferromagnetic (FM) clusters in this system. Variation of cusp position with applied AC frequency follows the famous Vogel-Fulcher law, which is commonly accepted feature for spin-glass (SG) system with homogeneous/non-homogeneous ferromagnetic clusters embedded in spin-glass (SG) matrix. Above the freezing temperature (Tf), first and third harmonics AC susceptibility analysis indicated possibility of the co-existence of spin cluster ferromagnetism with superparamagnetism (SPM). The M-H loops at low temperature exhibit the ferromagnetic behavior with rather small coercive field (Hc) and remnant magnetization (Mr). Summarily, the magnetic (DC and AC) susceptibility measurements and their analysis have enabled us to unearth the complex magnetism in terms of successive SG-FM-SPM transitions with temperature.

Superconducting Mechanism through direct and redox layer doping in Pnictides

The mechanism of superconductivity in pnictides is discussed through direct doping in superconducting FeAs and also in charge reservoir REO layers. The un-doped SmFeAsO is charge neutral SDW (Spin Density Wave) compound with magnetic ordering below 150 K. The Superconducting FeAs layers are doped with Co and Ni at Fe site, whereas REO layers are doped with F at O site. The electron doping in SmFeAsO through Co results in superconductivity with transition temperature (Tc) maximum up to 15 K, whereas F doping results in Tc upto 47 K in SmFeAsO. All these REFe/Co/NiAsO/F compounds are iso-structural to ZrCuSiAs structure. The samples are crystallized in a tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm. Variation of Tc with different doping routes shows the versatility of the structure and mechanism of occurrence of superconductivity. It seems doping in redox layer is more effective than direct doping in superconducting FeAs layer.

Superconducting Properties of adipic acid doped Bulk MgB2 Superconductor

We report the effect of adipic acid (C6H10O4) doping on lattice parameters, microstructure, critical temperature (Tc), current density (Jc), and irreversibility field (Hirr) for MgB2 superconductor. Actual carbon (C) substitution level for boron (B) is estimated to be from 0.40 percent to 2.95 percent for different doping levels. A reduction in Tc from 38.43 to 34.93 K and in lattice parameter a from 3.084(3) A to 3.075(6) Ais observed for the10 wt percent C6H10O4 doped sample in comparison to pristine MgB2. This is an indication of C substitution at boron sites, with the C coming from the decomposition of C6H10O4 at the time of reaction. Interestingly the doped samples have resulted in significant enhancement of Jc and Hirr. All the doped samples exhibit the Jc value of the order of 10^4 A/cm2 at 5 K and 8 T, which is higher by an order of magnitude as compared to undoped sample. This result indicates that C6H10O4 is a promising material for MgB2 for obtaining the excellent Jc values under higher magnetic fields.

Superconductivity at 14K in the Co-doped SmFe0.9Co0.1AsO

We report superconductivity in the SmFe0.9Co0.1AsO system being prepared by most easy and versatile single step solid-state reaction route. The parent compound SmFeAsO is non-superconducting but shows the spin density wave (SDW) like antiferromagnetic ordering at around 140K. To destroy the antiferromagnetic ordering and to induce the superconductivity in the parent system, the Fe2+ is substituted partially by Co3+. Superconductivity appears in SmFe0.9Co0.1AsO system at around 14K. The Co doping suppresses the SDW anomaly in the parent compound and induces the superconductivity. Magnetization measurements show clearly the onset of superconductivity with Tcdia at 14K. The isothermal magnetization measurements exhibit the lower critical fields (Hc1) to be around 200Oe at 2 K. The bulk superconductivity of the studied SmFe0.9Co0.1AsO sample is further established by open diamagnetic M(H) loops at 2, and 5K. Normal state (above Tc) linear isothermal magnetization M(H) plots excluded presence of any ordered magnetic impurity in the studied compound.

Superconductivity in SmFe1-xCoxAsO (x = 0.0 to 0.30)

We report synthesis, structural details and magnetization of SmFe1-xCoxAsO with x ranging from 0.0 to 0.30. It is found that Co substitutes fully at Fe site in SmFeAsO in an iso-structural lattice with slightly compressed cell. The parent compound exhibited known spin density wave (SDW) character below at around 140 K. Successive doping of Co at Fe site suppressed the SDW transition for x = 0.05 and later induced superconductivity for x = 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20 respectively at 14, 15.5 and 9K. The lower critical field as seen from magnetization measurements is below 200Oe. The appearance of bulk superconductivity is established by wide open isothermal magnetization M(H) loops. Superconductivity is not observed for higher content of Co i.e. x = 0.30. Clearly the Co substitution at Fe site in SmFe1-xCoxAsO diminishes the Fe SDW character, introduces bulk superconductivity for x between 0.10 and 0.20 and finally becomes non-superconducting for x above 0.20. The Fe2+ site Co3+ substitution injects mobile electrons to the system and superconductivity appears, however direct substitution introduces simultaneous disorder in superconducting FeAs layer and thus superconductivity disappears for higher content of Co.

Superconductivity in the vicinity of ferromagnetism in oxygen free perovskite MgCNi3: An experimental and DFT (Density Functional Theory) study

We report synthesis, structural, magnetic, specific heat and Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies on MgCNi3 superconductor. Polycrystalline MgCNi3 samples are synthesized through standard solid state reaction route and found to crystallize in cubic perovskite structure with space group Pm3m, without any detectable trace of Ni impurity. Both AC and DC magnetization exhibited superconducting transition (Tc) at around 7.25 K. The lower critical field (Hc1) and irreversibility field (Hirr) are around 140 Oe and 11 kOe respectively at 2 K. The upper critical field (Hc2) being determined from in-field AC susceptibility measurements is 11.6 kOe and 91.70 kOe with 50% and 90% diamagnetism criteria respectively. Heat capacity (Cp) measurements are carried out under applied field of up to 140 kOe and down to 2 K. The Sommerfeld constant (γ) and Debye temperature (ΘD) as determined from low temperature fitting of Cp(T) data to Sommerfeld-Debye model are 36.13 mJ/mole-K2 and 263.13 K respectively. The Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) parameter (2Δ/KBTc) is around 3.62, suggesting MgCNi3 to be an intermediate coupled BCS superconductor with value λ = 0.69. Although the density functional theory (DFT) calculations exhibited the compound to be non-magnetic but with spin fluctuations, the experimental isothermal magnetization MH loops at 20, 50, 100, 200 and 300 K showed some ferromagnetic nature in this compound with coercive field (Hc) of around 50 Oe at 20 K. The Ni3d states play dominant roles near the Fermi levels and there is strong hybridization between Ni3d and C2p states. It seems that MgCNi3 is superconducting in close proximity of ferromagnetism.

Synthesis and Characterization of Excess Magnesium MgB2 Superconductor under Inert Carbon Environment

The structural, transport and magnetic properties of MgB2 superconductor heavily blended with Mg is studied. The samples are synthesized with a new approach in both, pressed carbon environment and in flowing argon. The excess magnesium used is observed to play dual role: one being the prevention of Mg losses during the synthesis process and hence maintaining the stoichiometry of MgB2 phase, and second being the formation of Mg milieu probably all around the MgB2 grains to give a ductile and dense structure. Excess Mg also improves the grain connectivity by going in to the pores and there by minimizing the insulating junctions.

Synthesis and Physical Properties of FeSe1/2Te1/2 Superconductor

One of the most important properties of very recently reported FeSe based superconductors is the robustness of their superconductivity under applied magnetic field. The synthesis and control of superconductivity in FeSe based compounds is rather a difficult task. Synthesis and physical property characterization for optimized superconductivity of FeSe1/2Te1/2 at 13 K is reported here. The compound crystallized in a tetragonal structure with lattice parameters a = 3.8008(10) and c = 6.0187 (15) A. Magnetization measurements indicated bulk superconductivity with lower critical field (Hc1) of around 180 Oe. By applying Ginzburg Landau (GL) theory, the Hc2(0) value is estimated to be = 1840 kOe for the 90% of resistive transition. A heat capacity measurement revealed bulk superconductivity by a hump at Tc near 13 K, and an expected decrease was observed under an applied magnetic field.

Synthesis and Structural details of BiOCu1-xS: Possible new entrant in series of exotic superconductors?

We report an easy route single step synthesis of BiOCuS with and without Cu deficiency. The title compound is synthesized via solid state reaction route by encapsulation in an evacuated (10-3 Torr) quartz tube. Mixed components of the ingredients in stoichiometric ratio (1/3Bi2O3 +0.34Bi +Cu1-x + S) are pelletized, sealed in evacuated quartz tube and heat treated for 30 hours at 500 0C. Finally the sample is allowed to cool down to room temperature. The resultant compound is black is color and could not hold in pellet form, but is powdered. X-ray diffraction Reitveld analysis is carried out on all three samples of series BiOCu1-xS with x = 0.0, 0.10 and 0.15. These samples crystallize in single phase with space group P4/nmm and with cell parameters as a = 3.868 A and c = 8.557 A for stoichiometric BiOCuS. The volume of the cell slightly increases with an increase in Cu deficiency. The co-ordinate positions are determined by fitting the observed XRD patterns of the studied samples.

CeNi0.8Bi2 is very recent entrant in superconductivity kitchen [1], and the same seeks reproduction from other groups. We report synthesis, structural details and superconductivity in CeNi0.8Bi2 compound. The CeNi0.8Bi2 compound is synthesized by solid state reaction route via vacuum encapsulation of high purity mixed Ce, Ni, Bi and subsequent heating of the same at 500 0C for 10 hours followed by annealing at 750 0C for 20 hours. As synthesized compounds are dark grey in color and do crystallize in tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm. The lattice parameters are a = 3.61 Å and c = 10.20 Å. AC susceptibility measurements showed that synthesized CeNi0.8Bi2 compound is weakly superconducting below 4.2K. We believe our article will regenerate fresh activity to look for bulk superconductivity in CeNi0.8Bi2.

Synthesis of SmFeAsO by an Easy and Versatile Route and its Physical Property Characterization

We report synthesis, structure, electrical transport and heat capacity of SmFeAsO. The title compound is synthesized by one-step encapsulation of stoichiometric FeAs, Sm, and Sm2O3 in an evacuated (10-5 Torr) quartz tube by prolong (72 hours) annealing at 1100oC. The as synthesized compound is crystallized in tetragonal structure with P4/nmm space group having lattice parameters a = 3.93726(33) A and c = 8.49802(07) A. The resistance (R-T) measurements on the compound exhibited ground state spin-density-wave (SDW)-like metallic steps below 140 K. Heat capacity CP(T) measurements on the title compound, showed an anomaly at around 140 K, which is reminiscent of the SDW ordering of the compound. At lower temperatures the CP(T) shows a clear peak at around 4.5 K. At lower temperature below 20 K, Cp(T) is also measured under an applied field of 7 Tesla. It is concluded that the CP(T) peak at 4.5 K is due to the anti-ferromagnetic(AFM) ordering of Sm3+ spins. These results are in confirmation with ordering of Sm in Sm2-xCexCuO4.

Synthesis, magnetization and magneto transport study of RECoPO (RE = La, Nd & Sm)

We report the electrical, magneto transport and specific heat of the layered polycrystalline RECoPO (RE = La, Nd and Sm) samples. These compounds are iso-structural to recently discovered superconductor LaFeAs(O/F). Bulk polycrystalline samples are synthesized by solid state reaction route in an evacuated sealed quartz tube. All these compounds are crystallized in a tetragonal structure with space group P4/nmm. The Cobalt in these compounds is in itinerant state with its paramagnetic moment above 1.4\muB and the same orders ferromagnetically (FM) with saturation moment of around 0.20\muB below say 80K. Though, LaCoPO shows single paramagnetic (PM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition near 35K, the NdCoPO and SmCoPO exhibit successive PM-FM-AFM transitions. Both FM and AFM transition temperatures vary with applied field. Although the itinerant ferromagnetism occurs with small saturation moment, typical anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) transitions (TN1, TN2) are observed at 69K and 14K for Nd and 57K and 45K for Sm. This FM-AFM transition of Co spins in NdCoPO and SmCoPO is both field and temperature dependent. The Magneto-transport of NdCoPO and SmCoPO distinctly follows their successive PM-FM-AFM transitions. It is clear that Sm/Nd (4f) interacts with the Co (3d) in first time synthesized Sm/NdCoPO.

Temperature and field dependence of thermally activated flux flow resistance in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ superconductor

We study the temperature dependence of the resistivity as a function of magnetic field in superconducting transition (Tconset - TcR=0) region for different Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ superconducting samples being synthesized using sol-gel method. The superconducting transition temperature (TcR=0) of the studied samples is increased from 32 K to 82K by simply increasing the final sintering temperature with an improved grains morphology. On the other hand, broadening of transition is increased substantially with decrease in sintering temperature; this is because Tconset is not affected much with grains morphology. Further broadening of the superconducting transition is seen under magnetic field, which is being explained on the basis of thermally activated flux flow (TAFF) below superconducting transition temperature (Tc). TAFF activation energy (U0) is calculated using the resistive broadening of samples in the presence of magnetic field. Temperature dependence of TAFF activation energy revealed linear temperature dependence for all the samples. Further, magnetic field dependence is found to obey power law for all the samples and the negative exponent is increased with increase in sintering temperature or the improved grains morphology for different Bi-2212 samples. We believe that the sintering temperature and the ensuing role of grain morphology is yet a key issue to be addressed in case of cuprate superconductors.

The role of Ca in superconducting and magnetic properties of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7 (x = 0.0-0.30)

We report the structural, superconducting, magnetic and granular properties of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7; x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3. Rietveld fitted X-ray diffraction data confirms the single phase formation for all the samples. The orthorhombicity of parent compound (x = 0.0) decreases and becomes closer to the tetragonal structure for higher Ca concentration. The superconducting transition temperature (Tc) decreases with increasing Ca content due to both over-doping and ensuing disorder in the superconducting CuO2 planes with Ca doping. DC susceptibility measurements reveal reduction of Meissner fraction with Ca doping, suggesting the flux pining effect. The AC susceptibility measurements reveal the enhancement of grain coupling with increasing Ca content in the system. The average grain size is found to increase with Ca doping. The Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) observations indicate better grain connectivity in terms of narrow grain boundaries for Ca doped samples. It is concluded that limited Ca doping enhances the superconducting performance of YBa2Cu3O7 system.

Bulk polycrystalline NbC samples are synthesized through solid state reaction route in an evacuated sealed quartz tube. Studied NbC samples are crystallized in NaCl-type cubic structure with space group Fm-3m. To control cell parameters and minute un-reacted phases, different samples are synthesized with various heat treatments. Finally phase pure NbC is achieved. The grain size of the as systemized material being seen from SEM (scanning electron microscopy) is non-uniform of around 3-10μm size. Crystal structure and lattice parameters of samples have been calculated by Rietveld analysis of room temperature X-ray powder diffraction data. The lattice parameter increases with synthesis temperature and scales with superconducting transition temperature (Tc). Both AC and DC magnetization exhibited highest Tc at around 11.5 K for an NbC sample with lattice parameter a = 4.471 Å. The lower critical field (Hc1) and irreversibility field (Hirr) measured at 3 K are around 250 Oe and 4.5 kOe respectively. Interplay of Sm4f and Co3d spins in SmCoAsO

We present detailed magnetization and magneto-transport studies on the title compound SmCoAsO. In a recent paper we reported [1] the complex magnetism of this compound. SmCoAsO undergoes successive paramagnetic (PM) - ferro-magnetic (FM) - anti-ferro-magnetic (AFM) transitions with decrease in temperature. This is mainly driven via the c-direction interaction of Sm4f (SmO layer) spins with adjacent (CoAs layer) ordered Co3d spins. In this article we present an evidence of kinetic arrest for FM-AFM transition. The isothermal magnetization (MH) loops for SmCoAsO exhibited the meta-magnetic transitions at 6, 8 and 10K at around 80, 60 and 50kOe fields respectively with characteristic hysteresis shoulders along with the non-zero moment at origin, thus suggesting the possibility of kinetic arrest. Suggested kinetic arrest is further evident in zero field-cooled (ZFC) and field-cooled (FC) hysteresis under high fields of up to 140kOe magnetization (MT) and the magneto-transport measurements R(T)H during FM-AFM transition. The time dependent moment experiments exhibited very small (~2-3%) increase of the same below 20kO and decrease for 30kOe at 15K.

Large decrease in the critical temperature of superconducting LaFeAsO0.85 compounds doped with 3% atomic weight of nonmagnetic Zn impurities

We observed a large decrease of Tc by no more than 3 at.% of Zn doped to the optimized superconductor LaFeAsO0.85 (Tc = 26 K), confirmed by measurements of electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, specific heat, Mössbauer spectroscopy, Hall coefficient, and an electron probe micro-analysis. The rate ~9 K/% is remarkably higher than observations regarding nonmagnetic impurities. The Tc suppression is likely due to pair-breaking caused by scatterings associated with highly localized electronic state of Zn doped into the Fe2As2 layer. If this is true, the Zn result well accords with the theoretical prediction that suggests a sign reversal s-wave pairing model for the Fe pnictide superconductors, unlike other nonmagnetic impurity results.

Impact of rare earth magnetic moment on ordering of Ru in Sr2RuREO6 (RE = Gd and Eu)

We report synthesis and magnetization of Sr2RuREO6 (RE/Ru-211O6) with RE = Gd and Eu. Both Gd,Eu/Ru-211O6 are formed in distorted perovskite-type single phase with monoclinic P21/n space group. Magnetization (M/T) measurements exhibited antiferromagnetic ordering of Ru moments for both Gd and Eu compounds at TN of around 30 K due to super-exchange Ru-O-O-Ru interaction. Interestingly enough, detailed M/H plots of Gd/Ru-211O6 exhibited, the development of a ferromagnetic (FM) component at 20 K. Further at below 10 K, the FM component disappears and rather an spin freezing field (HSF) of around 1000 Oe is seen at 5 K. In case of Eu/Ru-211O6, the basic antiferromagnetic ordering of Ru moments remains invariant down to 5 K, and the appearance of FM component is not seen. It seems that the high magnetic moment of 8mB for Gd3+ influences the AFM ordering of Ru in case of Gd/Ru-211O6.

Magneto-Superconductivity of Rutheno-Cuprates

We reviewed our various results on rutheno-cuprate magneto-superconductors RuSr2GdCu2O8-d (Ru-1212) and RuSr2(Gd0.75Ce0.25)2Cu2O10-d (Ru-1222) synthesized by NPHT process. Also reviewed are the results for HPHT synthesized various Ln/Ru-1212, 1222 and 1232. Various important results being reported by other international groups are incorporated and discussed critically. It is observed, that it is difficult to control the oxygen content of Ru-1212, though the same is possible up to some extent for Ru-1222. Samples of both phases exhibited superconductivity, presumably in the CuO2 plane at low temperatures coexisting with magnetic ordering of Ru spins of predominantly antiferromagnetic type below 140 K having a ferromagnetic component appearing below 20 K. Electrical conductivity measurements indicate that the RuO2-d layer takes part in conduction besides the CuO2 plane. The magnetic ordering temperature of Ru spins is seen as a clear hump in the resistivity measurements, establishing the magnetic spins interaction with the conduction carriers.

Compounds of series YBa2Cu3O7-d (d = 0.7), being synthesized by solid-state synthesis route with x = 0.0, 0.10, 0.15 and 0.20, crystallize in single-phase form with tetragonal structure (space group P4/mmm). The c-lattice parameter increases with increasing x, indicating successful substitution of Y3+ by bigger Ca2+ ion. Resistance versus temperature (R vs. T) measurements show that pristine sample (x = 0.0) is semiconducting down to 5 K. Induction of superconductivity is seen with an increase in x. The x = 0.10 sample exhibit the onset of superconducting transition (Tconset) at around 42 K without attaining zero resistance superconducting transition temperature (TcR=0) state down to 5 K. For x = 0.15 and 0.20 samples TcR=0 is observed at 25 K and 35 K with Tconset of 52 K and 61 K respectively. Thermo-electric power (S) measurements in temperature range of 5 - 300 K, exhibited TcS=0 at around 25 K and 35 K respectively for x = 0.15 and 0.20 samples. Further a sign change in S from +ve to -ve is observed at low temperatures for x = 0.0 sample. Room temperature +ve S value decreases with increase in x, indicating enhanced number of mobile holes. The Magneto-transport measurements under applied magnet ic fields of 3 and 6 Tesla show the broadening of superconducting transition for x = 0.15, and 0.20 samples. For x = 0.10 sample the superconducting transition is suppressed in applied fields of 3 and 6 Tesla. Our results will help in constructing the complete phase diagram of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-d compounds with various x and d.

Magnetization study of RuSr2Y1.5Ce 0.5Cu2O10 (Ru-1222)

We have studied the magnetic properties of the non-superconducting RuSr2Ln1.5Ce0.5Cu2O10 (Ln=Y, Dy and Ho, Ru-1222) compounds synthesized under high pressure (6 Gpa) at elevated temperature. The materials become magnetically ordered at TM =152(2) K regardless of Ln. The wide ferromagnetic-like hysteresis loops which open at 5 K, close themselves around Tirr= 90-100 K and the remanent magnetizations (Mrem) and the coercive fields (HC) become zero. Surprisingly, at Tirr<T< TM a reappearance of the Mrem and HC (with a peak at 120-130 K) is observed for all three samples studied. For the non-magnetic Ln=Y compound, the extracted saturation moment at 5 K and the effective paramagnetic moment are is 0.75 and 2.05 mB /Ru, values which are close to the expected 1 mB and 1.73 mB respectively, for the low-spin state of Ru5+. We argue that the Ru-1222 system becomes (i) anti-ferromagnetically (AFM) ordered at TM. In this range a metamagnetic transition is induced by the applied field (ii). At Tirr < TM, weak-ferromagnetism (W-FM) is induced by the canting of the Ru moments.

Structural and magnetic properties of MSr2Y1.5Ce0.5Cu2Oz (M-1222) compounds with M = Fe and Co

MSr2Y1.5Ce0.5Cu2Oz (M-1222) compounds, with M = Fe and Co, have been synthesized through a solid-state reaction route. Both compounds crystallize in a tetragonal structure (space group I4/mmm). A Rietveld structural refinement of room-temperature neutron diffraction data for Fe-1222 reveals that nearly half the Fe remains at the M site, while the other half goes to the Cu site in the CuO2 planes. Existence of Fe at two different lattice sites, is also confirmed by 57Fe Mossbauer spectroscopy from which it is inferred that nearly 50% of the total Fe occupies the Cu site in the CuO2 planes as Fe3+, whereas the other 50 % is located at the M site with nearly 40 % as Fe4+ and around 10% as Fe3+. For the M = Co compound, nearly 84 % of Co remains at its designated M site, while the rest occupies the Cu site in the CuO2 planes. The oxygen content, z, based on oxygen occupancies refined from the neutron diffraction data, comes close to 9.0 for both the samples The ZFC and FC magnetization curves as a function of temperature show a complex behavior for both Fe-1222 and Co-1222 compounds.

Superconductivity of up to 80 K for Tb-123 - TbSr2Cu2.7Mo0.3O7

The Tb-123 phase has been synthesized in single-phase form with the composition TbSr2Cu2.7Mo0.3O7 by solid-state reaction route and its phase purity is confirmed by neutron powder diffraction experiments. As-synthesized sample does not show superconductivity down to 5 K. An unusually high antiferromagnetic ordering temperature (TN) of around 7 K is seen for Tb. After 120-atm-O2 post-annealing, bulk superconductivity is achieved in the compound at around 30 K, without any significant effect on TN. To achieve higher oxygen content and higher Tc, the as-synthesized sample is subjected to high-pressure oxygenation (HPO) carried out in a closed cell at 5 GPa and 400 oC in the presence of AgO as an excess-oxygen source. This sample exhibited superconductivity onset at around 80 K with a Meissner fraction of larger than 10 % at 5 K. Our observation of superconductivity at 80 K is the highest Tc to-date among the Tb-123 compounds.
