Blowup behavior of strongly perturbed wave equations

We study the blowup behavior of a class of strongly perturbed wave equations with a focusing supercritical power nonlinearity in three spatial dimensions. We show that the ODE blowup profile of the unperturbed equation still describes the asymptotics of stable blowup. As a consequence, stable ODE-type blowup is seen to be a universal phenomenon that exists in a large class of semilinear wave equations.

Stable blowup for the supercritical Yang-Mills heat flow

In this paper, we consider the heat flow for Yang-Mills connections on $\mathbb{R}^5 \times SO(5)$. In the $SO(5)-$equivariant setting, the Yang-Mills heat equation reduces to a single semilinear reaction-diffusion equation for which an explicit self-similar blowup solution was found by Weinkove \cite{Wei04}. We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of this solution under small perturbations. In particular, we show that there exists an open set of initial conditions in a suitable topology such that the corresponding solutions blow up in finite time and converge to a non-trivial self-similar blowup profile on an unbounded domain. Convergence is obtained in suitable Sobolev norms and in $L^{\infty}$.

Stable self-similar blowup in the supercritical heat flow of harmonic maps

We consider the heat flow of corotational harmonic maps from $\mathbb R^3$ to the three-sphere and prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of a particular self-similar shrinker that is not known in closed form. Our method provides a novel, systematic, robust, and constructive approach to the stability analysis of self-similar blowup in parabolic evolution equations. In particular, we completely avoid using delicate Lyapunov functionals, monotonicity formulas, indirect arguments, or fragile parabolic structure like the maximum principle. As a matter of fact, our approach reduces the nonlinear stability analysis of self-similar shrinkers to the spectral analysis of the associated self-adjoint linearized operators.

Codimension one stability of the catenoid under the vanishing mean curvature flow in Minkowski space

We study time-like hypersurfaces with vanishing mean curvature in the (3+1) dimensional Minkowski space, which are the hyperbolic counterparts to minimal embeddings of Riemannian manifolds. The catenoid is a stationary solution of the associated Cauchy problem. This solution is linearly unstable, and we show that this instability is the only obstruction to the global nonlinear stability of the catenoid. More precisely, we prove in a certain symmetry class the existence, in the neighborhood of the catenoid initial data, of a co-dimension 1 Lipschitz manifold transverse to the unstable mode consisting of initial data whose solutions exist globally in time and converge asymptotically to the catenoid.

On the stability of self-similar solutions to nonlinear wave equations

We consider an explicit self-similar solution to an energy-supercritical Yang-Mills equation and prove its mode stability. Based on earlier work by one of the authors, we obtain a fully rigorous proof of the nonlinear stability of the self-similar blowup profile. This is a large-data result for a supercritical wave equation. Our method is broadly applicable and provides a general approach to stability problems related to self-similar solutions of nonlinear wave equations.

Stable blowup for wave equations in odd space dimensions

We consider semilinear wave equations with focusing power nonlinearities in odd space dimensions $d \geq 5$. We prove that for every $p > \frac{d+3}{d-1}$ there exists an open set of radial initial data in $H^{\frac{d+1}{2}} \times H^{\frac{d-1}{2}}$ such that the corresponding solution exists in a backward lightcone and approaches the ODE blowup profile. The result covers the entire range of energy supercritical nonlinearities and extends our previous work for the three-dimensional radial wave equation to higher space dimensions.

A vector field method on the distorted Fourier side and decay for wave equations with potentials

We study the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional wave equation with an inverse square potential. We derive dispersive estimates, energy estimates, and estimates involving the scaling vector field, where the latter are obtained by employing a vector field method on the "distorted" Fourier side. In addition, we prove local energy decay estimates. Our results have immediate applications in the context of geometric evolution problems. The theory developed in this paper is fundamental for the proof of the co-dimension 1 stability of the catenoid under the vanishing mean curvature flow in Minkowski space.

Asymptotics and analytic modes for the wave equation in similarity coordinates

We consider the radial wave equation in similarity coordinates within the semigroup formalism. It is known that the generator of the semigroup exhibits a continuum of eigenvalues and embedded in this continuum there exists a discrete set of eigenvalues with analytic eigenfunctions. Our results show that, for sufficiently regular data, the long time behaviour of the solution is governed by the analytic eigenfunctions. The same techniques are applied to the linear stability problem for the fundamental self--similar solution $χ_T$ of the wave equation with a focusing power nonlinearity. Analogous to the free wave equation, we show that the long time behaviour (in similarity coordinates) of linear perturbations around $χ_T$ is governed by analytic mode solutions. In particular, this yields a rigorous proof for the linear stability of $χ_T$ with the sharp decay rate for the perturbations.

Nonscattering solutions and blowup at infinity for the critical wave equation

We consider the critical focusing wave equation $(-\partial_t^2+Δ)u+u^5=0$ in $\R^{1+3}$ and prove the existence of energy class solutions which are of the form [u(t,x)=t^\fracμ{2}W(t^μx)+η(t,x)] in the forward lightcone ${(t,x)\in\R\times \R^3: |x|\leq t, t\gg 1}$ where $W(x)=(1+(1/3)|x|^2)^{-(1/2)}$ is the ground state soliton, $μ$ is an arbitrary prescribed real number (positive or negative) with $|μ|\ll 1$, and the error $η$ satisfies [|\partial_t η(t,\cdot)|_{L^2(B_t)} +|\nabla η(t,\cdot)|_{L^2(B_t)}\ll 1,\quad B_t:={x\in\R^3: |x|<t}] for all $t\gg 1$. Furthermore, the kinetic energy of $u$ outside the cone is small. Consequently, depending on the sign of $μ$, we obtain two new types of solutions which either concentrate as $t\to\infty$ (with a continuum of rates) or stay bounded but do not scatter. In particular, these solutions contradict a strong version of the soliton resolution conjecture.

Stable blow up dynamics for energy supercritical wave equations

We study the semilinear wave equation \[ \partial_t^2 ψ-Δψ=|ψ|^{p-1}ψ\] for $p > 3$ with radial data in three spatial dimensions. There exists an explicit solution which blows up at $t=T>0$ given by \[ ψ^T(t,x)=c_p (T-t)^{-\frac{2}{p-1}} \] where $c_p$ is a suitable constant. We prove that the blow up described by $ψ^T$ is stable in the sense that there exists an open set (in a topology strictly stronger than the energy) of radial initial data that lead to a solution which converges to $ψ^T$ as $t\to T-$ in the backward lightcone of the blow up point $(t,r)=(T,0)$.

preprint2012arXiv

Stable self-similar blow up for energy subcritical wave equations

We consider the semilinear wave equation \[ \partial_t^2 ψ-Δψ=|ψ|^{p-1}ψ\] for $1<p\leq 3$ with radial data in $\R^{3}$. This equation admits an explicit spatially homogeneous blow up solution $ψ^T$ given by $$ ψ^T(t,x)=κ_p (T-t)^{-\frac{2}{p-1}} $$ where $T>0$ and $κ_p$ is a $p$-dependent constant. We prove that the blow up described by $ψ^T$ is stable against small perturbations in the energy topology. This complements previous results by Merle and Zaag. The method of proof is quite robust and can be applied to other self-similar blow up problems as well, even in the energy supercritical case.

Stable self-similar blowup in energy supercritical Yang-Mills theory

We consider the Cauchy problem for an energy supercritical nonlinear wave equation that arises in $(1+5)$--dimensional Yang--Mills theory. A certain self--similar solution $W_0$ of this model is conjectured to act as an attractor for generic large data evolutions. Assuming mode stability of $W_0$, we prove a weak version of this conjecture, namely that the self--similar solution $W_0$ is (nonlinearly) stable. Phrased differently, we prove that mode stability of $W_0$ implies its nonlinear stability. The fact that this statement is not vacuous follows from careful numerical work by Bizoń and Chmaj that verifies the mode stability of $W_0$ beyond reasonable doubt.

Numerical study of the blowup/global existence dichotomy for the focusing cubic nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation

We present some numerical findings concerning the nature of the blowup vs. global existence dichotomy for the focusing cubic nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation in three dimensions for radial data. The context of this study is provided by the classical paper by Payne, Sattinger from 1975, as well as the recent work by K. Nakanishi, and the second author arXiv:1005.4894. Specifically, we numerically investigate the boundary of the forward scattering region. At this point we do not have sufficient numerical evidence that might indicate whether or not the boundary remains a smooth manifold for general energies. In this updated version we include some fine-scale computations that reveal more complicated structures than one might expect.

On pointwise decay of linear waves on a Schwarzschild black hole background

We prove sharp pointwise $t^{-3}$ decay for scalar linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole without symmetry assumptions on the data. We also consider electromagnetic and gravitational perturbations for which we obtain decay rates $t^{-4}$, and $t^{-6}$, respectively. We proceed by decomposition into angular momentum $\ell$ and summation of the decay estimates on the Regge-Wheeler equation for fixed $\ell$. We encounter a dichotomy: the decay law in time is entirely determined by the asymptotic behavior of the Regge-Wheeler potential in the far field, whereas the growth of the constants in $\ell$ is dictated by the behavior of the Regge-Wheeler potential in a small neighborhood around its maximum. In other words, the tails are controlled by small energies, whereas the number of angular derivatives needed on the data is determined by energies close to the top of the Regge-Wheeler potential. This dichotomy corresponds to the well-known principle that for initial times the decay reflects the presence of complex resonances generated by the potential maximum, whereas for later times the tails are determined by the far field. However, we do not invoke complex resonances at all, but rely instead on semiclassical Sigal-Soffer type propagation estimates based on a Mourre bound near the top energy.

On stable self-similar blow up for equivariant wave maps

We consider co--rotational wave maps from (3+1) Minkowski space into the three--sphere. This is an energy supercritical model which is known to exhibit finite time blow up via self-similar solutions. The ground state self--similar solution $f_0$ is known in closed form and based on numerics, it is supposed to describe the generic blow up behavior of the system. We prove that the blow up via $f_0$ is stable under the assumption that $f_0$ does not have unstable modes. This condition is equivalent to a spectral assumption for a linear second order ordinary differential operator. In other words, we reduce the problem of stable blow up to a linear ODE spectral problem. Although we are unable, at the moment, to verify the mode stability of $f_0$ rigorously, it is known that possible unstable eigenvalues are confined to a certain compact region in the complex plane. As a consequence, highly reliable numerical techniques can be applied and all available results strongly suggest the nonexistence of unstable modes, i.e., the assumed mode stability of $f_0$.

Semiclassical low energy scattering for one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with exponentially decaying potentials

We consider semiclassical Schrödinger operators on the real line of the form $$H(\hbar)=-\hbar^2 \frac{d^2}{dx^2}+V(\cdot;\hbar)$$ with $\hbar>0$ small. The potential $V$ is assumed to be smooth, positive and exponentially decaying towards infinity. We establish semiclassical global representations of Jost solutions $f_\pm(\cdot,E;\hbar)$ with error terms that are uniformly controlled for small $E$ and $\hbar$, and construct the scattering matrix as well as the semiclassical spectral measure associated to $H(\hbar)$. This is crucial in order to obtain decay bounds for the corresponding wave and Schrödinger flows. As an application we consider the wave equation on a Schwarzschild background for large angular momenta $\ell$ where the role of the small parameter $\hbar$ is played by $\ell^{-1}$. It follows from the results in this paper and \cite{DSS2}, that the decay bounds obtained in \cite{DSS1}, \cite{DS} for individual angular momenta $\ell$ can be summed to yield the sharp $t^{-3}$ decay for data without symmetry assumptions.

A proof of Price's Law on Schwarzschild black hole manifolds for all angular momenta

Price's Law states that linear perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole fall off as $t^{-2\ell-3}$ for $t \to \infty$ provided the initial data decay sufficiently fast at spatial infinity. Moreover, if the perturbations are initially static (i.e., their time derivative is zero), then the decay is predicted to be $t^{-2\ell-4}$. We give a proof of $t^{-2\ell-2}$ decay for general data in the form of weighted $L^1$ to $L^\infty$ bounds for solutions of the Regge--Wheeler equation. For initially static perturbations we obtain $t^{-2\ell-3}$. The proof is based on an integral representation of the solution which follows from self--adjoint spectral theory. We apply two different perturbative arguments in order to construct the corresponding spectral measure and the decay bounds are obtained by appropriate oscillatory integral estimates.

On stable self-similar blow up for equivariant wave maps: The linearized problem

We consider co-rotational wave maps from (3+1) Minkowski space into the three-sphere. This is an energy supercritical model which is known to exhibit finite time blow up via self-similar solutions. The ground state self-similar solution $f_0$ is known in closed form and based on numerics, it is supposed to describe the generic blow up behavior of the system. In this paper we develop a rigorous linear perturbation theory around $f_0$. This is an indispensable prerequisite for the study of nonlinear stability of the self-similar blow up which is conducted in a companion paper. In particular, we prove that $f_0$ is linearly stable if it is mode stable. Furthermore, concerning the mode stability problem, we prove new results that exclude the existence of unstable eigenvalues with large imaginary parts and also, with real parts larger than 1/2. The remaining compact region is well-studied numerically and all available results strongly suggest the nonexistence of unstable modes.
