Co-dimension one stable blowup for the supercritical cubic wave equation

For the focusing cubic wave equation, we find an explicit, non-trivial self-similar blowup solution $u^*_T$, which is defined on the whole space and exists in all supercritical dimensions $d \geq 5$. For $d=7$, we analyze its stability properties without any symmetry assumptions and prove the existence of a set of perturbations which lead to blowup via $u^*_T$ in a backward light cone. Moreover, this set corresponds to a co-dimension one Lipschitz manifold modulo translation symmetries in similarity coordinates.

Nonlinear stability of homothetically shrinking Yang-Mills solitons in the equivariant case

We study the heat flow for Yang-Mills connections on $\mathbb R^d \times SO(d)$. It is well-known that in dimensions $5 \leq d \leq 9$ this model admits homothetically shrinking solitons, i.e., self-similar blowup solutions, with an explicit example given by Weinkove \cite{Wei04}. We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of the Weinkove solution under small equivariant perturbations and thus extend a result by the second author and Donninger for $d=5$ to higher dimensions. At the same time, we provide a general framework for proving stability of self-similar blowup solutions to a large class of semilinear heat equations in arbitrary space dimension $d \geq 3$, including a robust and simple method for solving the underlying spectral problems.

Threshold for blowup for the supercritical cubic wave equation

We consider the focusing cubic wave equation in the energy supercritical case, i.e., in dimensions $d \geq 5$. For this model an explicit nontrivial self-similar blowup solution was recently found by the first and third author in \cite{GlogicSchoerkhuber}. Furthermore, the solution is proven to be co-dimension one stable in $d=7$. In this paper, we study the equation from a numerical point of view. For $d=5$ and $d=7$ in the radial case, we provide evidence that this solution is at the threshold between generic ODE blowup and dispersion. In addition, we investigate the spectral problem that underlies the stability analysis and compute the spectrum in general supercritical dimensions.

Stable blowup for the supercritical Yang-Mills heat flow

In this paper, we consider the heat flow for Yang-Mills connections on $\mathbb{R}^5 \times SO(5)$. In the $SO(5)-$equivariant setting, the Yang-Mills heat equation reduces to a single semilinear reaction-diffusion equation for which an explicit self-similar blowup solution was found by Weinkove \cite{Wei04}. We prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of this solution under small perturbations. In particular, we show that there exists an open set of initial conditions in a suitable topology such that the corresponding solutions blow up in finite time and converge to a non-trivial self-similar blowup profile on an unbounded domain. Convergence is obtained in suitable Sobolev norms and in $L^{\infty}$.

Stable self-similar blowup in the supercritical heat flow of harmonic maps

We consider the heat flow of corotational harmonic maps from $\mathbb R^3$ to the three-sphere and prove the nonlinear asymptotic stability of a particular self-similar shrinker that is not known in closed form. Our method provides a novel, systematic, robust, and constructive approach to the stability analysis of self-similar blowup in parabolic evolution equations. In particular, we completely avoid using delicate Lyapunov functionals, monotonicity formulas, indirect arguments, or fragile parabolic structure like the maximum principle. As a matter of fact, our approach reduces the nonlinear stability analysis of self-similar shrinkers to the spectral analysis of the associated self-adjoint linearized operators.

Stable blowup for wave equations in odd space dimensions

We consider semilinear wave equations with focusing power nonlinearities in odd space dimensions $d \geq 5$. We prove that for every $p > \frac{d+3}{d-1}$ there exists an open set of radial initial data in $H^{\frac{d+1}{2}} \times H^{\frac{d-1}{2}}$ such that the corresponding solution exists in a backward lightcone and approaches the ODE blowup profile. The result covers the entire range of energy supercritical nonlinearities and extends our previous work for the three-dimensional radial wave equation to higher space dimensions.

Stable blow up dynamics for energy supercritical wave equations

We study the semilinear wave equation \[ \partial_t^2 ψ-Δψ=|ψ|^{p-1}ψ\] for $p > 3$ with radial data in three spatial dimensions. There exists an explicit solution which blows up at $t=T>0$ given by \[ ψ^T(t,x)=c_p (T-t)^{-\frac{2}{p-1}} \] where $c_p$ is a suitable constant. We prove that the blow up described by $ψ^T$ is stable in the sense that there exists an open set (in a topology strictly stronger than the energy) of radial initial data that lead to a solution which converges to $ψ^T$ as $t\to T-$ in the backward lightcone of the blow up point $(t,r)=(T,0)$.

Stable self-similar blow up for energy subcritical wave equations

We consider the semilinear wave equation \[ \partial_t^2 ψ-Δψ=|ψ|^{p-1}ψ\] for $1<p\leq 3$ with radial data in $\R^{3}$. This equation admits an explicit spatially homogeneous blow up solution $ψ^T$ given by $$ ψ^T(t,x)=κ_p (T-t)^{-\frac{2}{p-1}} $$ where $T>0$ and $κ_p$ is a $p$-dependent constant. We prove that the blow up described by $ψ^T$ is stable against small perturbations in the energy topology. This complements previous results by Merle and Zaag. The method of proof is quite robust and can be applied to other self-similar blow up problems as well, even in the energy supercritical case.
