On stability of blow up solutions for the critical co-rotational Wave Maps problem

We show that the finite time blow up solutions for the co-rotational Wave Maps problem constructed in [7,15] are stable under suitably small perturbations within the co-rotational class, provided the scaling parameter $λ(t) = t^{-1-ν}$ is sufficiently close to $t^{-1}$, i. e. the constant $ν$ is sufficiently small and positive. The method of proof is inspired by [3,12], but takes advantage of geometric structures of the Wave Maps problem already used in [1,21] to simplify the analysis. In particular, we heavily exploit that the resonance at zero satisfies a natural first order differential equation.

A class of large global solutions for the Wave--Map equation

In this paper we consider the equation for equivariant wave maps from $R^{3+1}$ to $S^3$ and we prove global in forward time existence of certain $C^\infty$-smooth solutions which have infinite critical Sobolev norm $\dot{H}^{\frac{3}{2}}(R^3)\times \dot{H}^{\frac{1}{2}}(R^3)$. Our construction provides solutions which can moreover satisfy the additional size condition $\|u(0, \cdot)\|_{L^\infty(|x|\geq 1)}>M$ for arbitrarily chosen $M>0$. These solutions are also stable under suitable perturbations. Our method is based on a perturbative approach around suitably constructed approximate self--similar solutions.

Codimension one stability of the catenoid under the vanishing mean curvature flow in Minkowski space

We study time-like hypersurfaces with vanishing mean curvature in the (3+1) dimensional Minkowski space, which are the hyperbolic counterparts to minimal embeddings of Riemannian manifolds. The catenoid is a stationary solution of the associated Cauchy problem. This solution is linearly unstable, and we show that this instability is the only obstruction to the global nonlinear stability of the catenoid. More precisely, we prove in a certain symmetry class the existence, in the neighborhood of the catenoid initial data, of a co-dimension 1 Lipschitz manifold transverse to the unstable mode consisting of initial data whose solutions exist globally in time and converge asymptotically to the catenoid.

Concentration Compactness for the Critical Maxwell-Klein-Gordon Equation

We prove global regularity, scattering and a priori bounds for the energy critical Maxwell-Klein-Gordon equation relative to the Coulomb gauge on (1+4)-dimensional Minkowski space. The proof is based upon a modified Bahouri-Gerard profile decomposition [1] and a concentration compactness/rigidity argument by Kenig-Merle [10], following the method developed by the first author and Schlag [20] in the context of critical wave maps.

A vector field method on the distorted Fourier side and decay for wave equations with potentials

We study the Cauchy problem for the one-dimensional wave equation with an inverse square potential. We derive dispersive estimates, energy estimates, and estimates involving the scaling vector field, where the latter are obtained by employing a vector field method on the "distorted" Fourier side. In addition, we prove local energy decay estimates. Our results have immediate applications in the context of geometric evolution problems. The theory developed in this paper is fundamental for the proof of the co-dimension 1 stability of the catenoid under the vanishing mean curvature flow in Minkowski space.

Large global solutions for energy supercritical nonlinear wave equations on \R^{3+1}

For the radial energy-supercritical nonlinear wave equation $$\Box u = -u_{tt} + \triangle u = \pm u^7$$ on $\R^{3+1}$, we prove the existence of a class of global in forward time $C^\infty$-smooth solutions with infinite critical Sobolev norm $\dot{H}^{\frac{7}{6}}(\R^3)\times \dot{H}^{\f16}(\R^3)$. Moreover, these solutions are stable under suitably small perturbations . We also show that for the {\em defocussing} energy supercritical wave equation, we can construct such solutions which moreover satisfy the size condition $\|u(0, \cdot)\|_{L_x^\infty(|x|\geq 1)}>M$ for arbitrarily prescribed $M>0$. These solutions are stable under suitably small perturbations. Our method proceeds by regularization of self-similar solutions which are smooth away from the light-cone but singular on the light-cone. The argument crucially depends on the supercritical nature of the equation. Our approach should be seen as part of the program initiated in \cite{KrSchTat1}, \cite{KrSchTat2}, \cite{DoKri}.

Optimal polynomial blow up range for critical wave maps

We prove that the critical Wave Maps equation with target $S^2$ and origin $\mathbb{R}^{2+1}$ admits energy class blow up solutions of the form $$u(t,r)=Q(λ(t)r)+ε(t,r)$$where $Q: \mathbb{R}^2 \to S^2$ is the ground state harmonic map and $λ(t) = t^{-1-ν}$ for any $ν> 0$. This extends the work [13], where such solutions were constructed under the assumption $ν> 1/2$. In light of a result of Struwe [22], our result is optimal for polynomial blow up rates.

Center-stable manifold of the ground state in the energy space for the critical wave equation

We construct a center-stable manifold of the ground state solitons in the energy space for the critical wave equation without imposing any symmetry, as the dynamical threshold between scattering and blow-up, and also as a collection of solutions which stay close to the ground states. Up to energy slightly above the ground state, this completes the 9-set classification of the global dynamics in our previous paper. We can also extend the manifold to arbitrary energy size by adding large radiation. The manifold contains all the solutions scattering to the ground state solitons, and also some of those blowing up in finite time by concentration of the ground states.

Global dynamics of the nonradial energy-critical wave equation above the ground state energy

In this paper we establish the existence of certain classes of solutions to the energy critical nonlinear wave equation in dimensions 3 and 5 assuming that the energy exceeds the ground state energy only by a small amount. No radial assumption is made. We find that there exist four sets in the natural energy space with nonempty interiors which correspond to all possible combinations of finite-time blowup on the one hand, and global existence and scattering to a free wave, on the other hand, as time approaches infinity. In our previous paper arxiv:1010.3799 we treated the radial case, and this paper provides the natural nonradial extension of these results. However, the present paper is self-contained and in fact develops a somewhat different formalism in order to handle the more complex nonradial situation.

Nonscattering solutions and blowup at infinity for the critical wave equation

We consider the critical focusing wave equation $(-\partial_t^2+Δ)u+u^5=0$ in $\R^{1+3}$ and prove the existence of energy class solutions which are of the form [u(t,x)=t^\fracμ{2}W(t^μx)+η(t,x)] in the forward lightcone ${(t,x)\in\R\times \R^3: |x|\leq t, t\gg 1}$ where $W(x)=(1+(1/3)|x|^2)^{-(1/2)}$ is the ground state soliton, $μ$ is an arbitrary prescribed real number (positive or negative) with $|μ|\ll 1$, and the error $η$ satisfies [|\partial_t η(t,\cdot)|_{L^2(B_t)} +|\nabla η(t,\cdot)|_{L^2(B_t)}\ll 1,\quad B_t:={x\in\R^3: |x|<t}] for all $t\gg 1$. Furthermore, the kinetic energy of $u$ outside the cone is small. Consequently, depending on the sign of $μ$, we obtain two new types of solutions which either concentrate as $t\to\infty$ (with a continuum of rates) or stay bounded but do not scatter. In particular, these solutions contradict a strong version of the soliton resolution conjecture.

On type I blow up formation for the critical NLW

We introduce a suitable concept of weak evolution in the context of the radial quintic focussing semilinear wave equation on $\mathbb{R}^{3+1}$, that is adapted to continuation past type II singularities. We show that the weak extension leads to type I singularity formation for initial data corresponding to: (i) the Kenig-Merle blow-up solutions with initial energy below the ground state and (ii) the Krieger-Nakanishi-Schlag blow-up solutions sitting initially near and "above" the ground state static solution.

A non-local inequality and global existence

In this article we prove a collection of new non-linear and non-local integral inequalities. As an example for $u\ge 0$ and $p\in (0,\infty)$ we obtain $$ \int_{\threed} dx ~ u^{p+1}(x) \le (\frac{p+1}{p})^2 \int_{\threed} dx ~ \{(-\triangle)^{-1} u(x) \} \nsm \nabla u^{\frac{p}{2}}(x)\nsm^2. $$ We use these inequalities to deduce global existence of solutions to a non-local heat equation with a quadratic non-linearity for large radial monotonic positive initial conditions. Specifically, we improve \cite{ksLM} to include all $α\in (0, 74/75)$.

Full range of blow up exponents for the quintic wave equation in three dimensions

For the critical focusing wave equation \Box u = u^5 on R^{3+1} in the radial case, we prove the existence of type II blow up solutions with scaling parameter λ(t) = t^{-1-ν} for all ν>0. This extends the previous work by the authors and Tataru where the condition ν> 1/2 had been imposed, and gives the optimal range of polynomial blow up rates in light of recent work by Duyckaerts, Kenig and Merle.

Nondispersive solutions to the L2-critical half-wave equation

We consider the focusing $L^2$-critical half-wave equation in one space dimension $$ i \partial_t u = D u - |u|^2 u, $$ where $D$ denotes the first-order fractional derivative. Standard arguments show that there is a critical threshold $M_* > 0$ such that all $H^{1/2}$ solutions with $\| u \|_{L^2} < M_*$ extend globally in time, while solutions with $\| u \|_{L^2} \geq M_*$ may develop singularities in finite time. In this paper, we first prove the existence of a family of traveling waves with subcritical arbitrarily small mass. We then give a second example of nondispersive dynamics and show the existence of finite-time blowup solutions with minimal mass $\| u_0 \|_{L^2} = M_*$. More precisely, we construct a family of minimal mass blowup solutions that are parametrized by the energy $E_0 >0$ and the linear momentum $P_0 \in \R$. In particular, our main result (and its proof) can be seen as a model scenario of minimal mass blowup for $L^2$-critical nonlinear PDE with nonlocal dispersion.

Threshold phenomenon for the quintic wave equation in three dimensions

For the critical focusing wave equation $\Box u = u^5$ on $\R^{3+1}$ in the radial case, we establish the role of the "center stable" manifold $Σ$ constructed in \cite{KS} near the ground state $(W,0)$ as a threshold between type I blowup and scattering to zero, establishing a conjecture going back to numerical work by Bizoń, Chmaj, Tabor. The underlying topology is stronger than the energy norm.

preprint2011arXiv

Global solutions to a non-local diffusion equation with quadratic non-linearity

In this paper we prove the global in time well-posedness of the following non-local diffusion equation with $α\in[0,2/3)$: $$ \partial_t u = {(-\triangle)^{-1}u} \triangle u + αu^2, \quad u(t=0) = u_0. $$ The initial condition $u_0$ is positive, radial, and non-increasing with $u_0\in L^1\cap L^{2+δ}(\threed)$ for some small $δ>0$. There is no size restriction on $u_0$. This model problem appears of interest due to its structural similarity with Landau's equation from plasma physics, and moreover its radically different behavior from the semi-linear Heat equation: $u_t = \triangle u + αu^2$.

preprint2010arXiv

Global dynamics above the ground state energy for the one-dimensional NLKG equation

In this paper we obtain a global characterization of the dynamics of even solutions to the one-dimensional nonlinear Klein-Gordon (NLKG) equation on the line with focusing nonlinearity |u|^{p-1}u, p>5, provided their energy exceeds that of the ground state only sightly. The method is the same as in the three-dimensional case arXiv:1005.4894, the major difference being in the construction of the center-stable manifold. The difficulty there lies with the weak dispersive decay of 1-dimensional NLKG. In order to address this specific issue, we establish local dispersive estimates for the perturbed linear Klein-Gordon equation, similar to those of Mizumachi arXiv:math/0605031. The essential ingredient for the latter class of estimates is the absence of a threshold resonance of the linearized operator.

preprint2010arXiv

Global dynamics away from the ground state for the energy-critical nonlinear wave equation

We study global behavior of radial solutions for the nonlinear wave equation with the focusing energy critical nonlinearity in three and five space dimensions. Assuming that the solution has energy at most slightly more than the ground states and gets away from them in the energy space, we can classify its behavior into four cases, according to whether it blows up in finite time or scatters to zero, in forward or backward time direction. We prove that initial data for each case constitute a non-empty open set in the energy space. This is an extension of the recent results by the latter two authors on the subcritical nonlinear Klein-Gordon and Schrödinger equations, except for the part of the center manifolds. The key step is to prove the "one-pass" theorem, which states that the transition from the scattering region to the blow-up region can take place at most once along each trajectory. The main new ingredients are the control of the scaling parameter and the blow-up characterization by Duyckaerts, Kenig and Merle.

On Stability of Pseudo-Conformal Blowup for L^2-critical Hartree NLS

We consider $L^2$-critical focusing nonlinear Schroedinger equations with Hartree type nonlinearity $$i \pr_t u = -\DD u - \big (Φ\ast |u|^2 \big) u \quad {in $\RR^4$},$$ where $Φ(x)$ is a perturbation of the convolution kernel $|x|^{-2}$. Despite the lack of pseudo conformal invariance for this equation, we prove the existence of critical mass finite-time blowup solutions $u(t,x)$ that exhibit the pseudo-conformal blowup rate $$ \| \nabla u(t) \|_{L^2_x} \sim \frac{1}{|t|} \quad {as} \quad t \nearrow 0 . $$ Furthermore, we prove the finite-codimensional stability of this conformal blow up, by extending the nonlinear wave operator construction by Bourgain and Wang (see \cite{Bourgain+Wang1997}) to $L^2$-critical Hartree NLS.
