Backward asymptotics in S-unimodal maps

While the forward trajectory of a point in a discrete dynamical system is always unique, in general a point can have infinitely many backward trajectories. The union of the limit points of all backward trajectories through $x$ was called by M.~Hero the "special $α$-limit" ($sα$-limit for short) of $x$. In this article we show that there is a hierarchy of $sα$-limits of points under iterations of a S-unimodal map: the size of the $sα$-limit of a point increases monotonically as the point gets closer and closer to the attractor. The $sα$-limit of any point of the attractor is the whole non-wandering set. This hierarchy reflects the structure of the graph of a S-unimodal map recently introduced jointly by Jim Yorke and the present author.

Weak solutions of the cohomological equation on R^2 for regular vector fields

In a recent article, we studied the global solvability of the so-called cohomological equation L_X f=g in C^\infty(\Rt), where X is a regular vector field on the plane and L_X the corresponding Lie derivative. In a joint article with T. Gramchev and A. Kirilov, we studied the existence of global L^1_{loc} weak solutions of the cohomological equation for vector fields depending only on one coordinate. Here we generalize the results of both articles by providing explicit conditions for the existence of global weak solutions to the cohomological equation when X is intrinsically Hamiltonian or of finite type.

Exponential growth of norms in semigroups of linear automorphisms and Hausdorff dimension of self-projective IFS

Given a finitely generated semigroup S of the (normed) set of linear maps of a vector space V into itself, we find sufficient conditions for the exponential growth of the number N(k) of elements of the semigroup contained in the sphere of radius k as k->infinity. We relate the growth rate lim log N(k)/log k to the exponent of a zeta function naturally defined on the semigroup and, in case S is a semigroup of volume-preserving automorpisms, to the Hausdorff and box dimensions of the limit set of the induced semigroup of automorphisms on the corresponding projective space.

Global Solvability in Functional Spaces for Smooth Nonsingular Vector Fields in the Plane

We address some global solvability issues for classes of smooth nonsingular vector fields $L$ in the plane related to cohomological equations $Lu=f$ in geometry and dynamical systems. The first main result is that $L$ is not surjective in $C^\infty(\R^2)$ iff the geometrical condition -- the existence of separatrix strips -- holds. Next, for nonsurjective vector fields, we demonstrate that if the RHS $f$ has at most infra-exponential growth in the separatrix strips we can find a global weak solution $L^1_{loc}$ near the boundaries of the separatrix strips. Finally we investigate the global solvability for perturbations with zero order p.d.o. We provide examples showing that our estimates are sharp.

Partial immersions and partially free maps

In a recent paper~\cite{DDL10} we studied basic properties of partial immersions and partially free maps, a generalization of free maps introduced first by Gromov in~\cite{Gro70}. In this short note we show how to build partially free maps out of partial immersions and use this fact to prove that the partially free maps in critical dimension introduced in Theorems 1.1-1.3 of~\cite{DDL10} for three important types of distributions can actually be built out of partial immersions. Finally, we show that the canonical contact structure on $\bR^{2n+1}$ admits partial immersions in critical dimension for every $n$.

Partially Isometric Immersions and Free Maps

In this paper we investigate the existence of ``partially'' isometric immersions. These are maps f:M->R^q which, for a given Riemannian manifold M, are isometries on some sub-bundle H of TM. The concept of free maps, which is essential in the Nash--Gromov theory of isometric immersions, is replaced here by that of H-free maps, i.e. maps whose restriction to H is free. We prove, under suitable conditions on the dimension q of the Euclidean space, that H-free maps are generic and we provide, for the smallest possible value of q, explicit expressions for H-free maps in the following three settings: 1-dimensional distributions in R^2, Lagrangian distributions of completely integrable systems, Hamiltonian distributions of a particular kind of Poisson Bracket.

Solvability of the cohomological equation for regular vector fields on the plane

We consider planar vector field without zeroes X and study the image of the associated Lie derivative operator LX acting on the space of smooth functions. We show that the cokernel of LX is infinite-dimensional as soon as X is not topologically conjugate to a constant vector field and that, if the topology of the integral trajectories of X is ``simple enough'' (e.g. if X is polynomial) then X is transversal to a Hamiltonian foliation. We use this fact to find a large explicit subalgebra of the image of LX and to build an embedding of R^2 into R^4 which rectifies X. Finally we use this embedding to characterize the functions in the image of LX.
