Eigenvalues of Laplacians on Higher Dimensional Vicsek Set Graphs

We study the graphs associated with Vicsek sets in higher dimensional settings. First, we study the eigenvalues of the Laplacians on the approximating graphs of the Vicsek sets, finding a general spectral decimation function. This is an extension of earlier results on two dimensional Vicsek sets. Second, we study the Vicsek set lattices, which are natural analogues to the Sierpinski lattices. We have a criterion when two different Vicsek set lattices are isomorphic.

Existence and uniqueness of diffusions on the Julia sets of Misiurewicz-Sierpinski maps

We study the balanced resistance forms on the Julia sets of Misiurewicz-Sierpinski maps, which are self-similar resistance forms with equal weights. In particular, we use a theorem of Sabot to prove the existence and uniqueness of balanced forms on these Julia sets. We also provide an explorative study on the resistance forms on the Julia sets of rational maps with periodic critical points.

Laplacians on Julia sets of rational maps

The study of Julia sets gives a new and natural way to look at fractals. When mathematicians investigated the special class of Misiurewicz's rational maps, they found out that there is a Julia set which is homeomorphic to a well known fractal, the Sierpinski gasket. In this paper, we apply the method of Kigami to give rise to a new construction of Laplacians on the Sierpinski gasket like Julia sets with a dynamically invariant property.

Spectral Decimation for Families of Self-Similar Symmetric Laplacians on the Sierpinski Gasket

We construct a one-parameter family of Laplacians on the Sierpinski Gasket that are symmetric and self-similar for the 9-map iterated function system obtained by iterating the standard 3-map iterated function system. Our main result is the fact that all these Laplacians satisfy a version of spectral decimation that builds a precise catalog of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for any choice of the parameter. We give a number of applications of this spectral decimation. We also prove analogous results for fractal Laplacians on the unit Interval, and this yields an analogue of the classical Sturm-Liouville theory for the eigenfunctions of these one-dimensional Laplacians.

A Convex Surface with Fractal Curvature

We construct a surface that is obtained from the octahedron by pushing out 4 of the faces so that the curvature is supported in a copy of the Sierpinski gasket in each of them, and is essentially the self similar measure on SG. We then compute the bottom of the spectrum of the associated Laplacian using the finite element method on polyhedral approximations of our surface, and speculate on the behavior of the entire spectrum.

Polynomials on the Sierpinski Gasket with Respect to Different Laplacians which are Symmetric and Self-Similar

We study the analogue of polynomials (solutions to $Δ^{n+1} u =0$ for some $n$) on the Sierpinski gasket ($SG$) with respect to a family of symmetric, self-similar Laplacians constructed by Fang, King, Lee, and Strichartz, extending the work of Needleman, Strichartz, Teplyaev, and Yung on the polynomials with respect to the standard Kigami Laplacian. We define a basis for the space of polynomials, the monomials, characterized by the property that a certain "derivative" is 1 at one of the boundary points, while all other "derivatives" vanish, and we compute the values of the monomials at the boundary points of $SG$. We then present some data which suggest surprising relationships between the values of the monomials at the boundary and certain Neumann eigenvalues of the family of symmetric self-similar Laplacians. Surprisingly, the results for the general case are quite different from the results for the Kigami Laplacian.

Sampling Theory with Average Values on the Sierpinski Gasket

In the case of some fractals, sampling with average values on cells is more natural than sampling on points. In this paper we investigate this method of sampling on $SG$ and $SG_{3}$. In the former, we show that the cell graph approximations have the spectral decimation property and prove an analog of the Shannon sampling theorem.. We also investigate the numerical properties of these sampling functions and make conjectures which allow us to look at sampling on infinite blowups of $SG$. In the case of $SG_{3}$, we show that the cell graphs have the spectral decimation property, but show that it is not useful for proving an analogous sampling theorem.

Unexpected Spectral Asymptotics for Wave Equations on certain Compact Spacetimes

We study the spectral asymptotics of wave equations on certain compact spacetimes where some variant of the Weyl asymptotic law is valid. The simplest example is the spacetime $S^1 \times S^2$. For the Laplacian on $S^1 \times S^2$ the Weyl asymptotic law gives a growth rate $O(s^{3/2})$ for the eigenvalue counting function $N(s) = \#\{λ_j: 0 \leq λ_j \leq s\}$. For the wave operator there are two corresponding eigenvalue counting functions $N^{\pm}(s) = \#\{λ_j: 0 < \pm λ_j \leq s\}$ and they both have a growth rate of $O(s^2)$. More precisely there is a leading term $\frac{π^2}{4}s^2$ and a correction term of $as^{3/2}$ where the constant $a$ is different for $N^{\pm}$. These results are not robust, in that if we include a speed of propagation constant to the wave operator the result depends on number theoretic properties of the constant, and generalizations to $S^1 \times S^q$ are valid for $q$ even but not $q$ odd. We also examine some related examples.

Average Error for Spectral Asymptotics on Surfaces

Let $N(t)$ denote the eigenvalue counting funtion of the Laplacian on a compact surface of constant nonnegative curvature, with or without boundary. We define a refined asymptotic formula $\tilde{N}(t)=At+Bt^{1/2}+C$, where the constants are expressed in terms of the geometry of the surface and its boundary, and consider the average error $A(t) = \frac{1}{t} \int_0^{t}D(s)ds$ for $D(t) = N(t) - \tilde{N}(t)$. We present a conjecture for the asymptotic behavior of $A(t)$, and study some examples that support the conjecture.

Boundary Value Problems for a Family of Domains in the Sierpinski Gasket

For a family of domains in the Sierpinski gasket, we study harmonic functions of finite energy, characterizing them in terms of their boundary values, and study their normal derivatives on the boundary. We characterize those domains for which there is an extension operator for functions of finite energy. We give an explicit construction of the Green's function for these domains.

Energy Measures of Harmonic Functions on the Sierpiński Gasket

We study energy measures on SG based on harmonic functions. We characterize the positive energy measures through studying the bounds of Radon-Nikodym derivatives with respect to the Kusuoka measure. We prove a limited continuity of the derivative on the graph $V_*$ and express the average value of the derivative on a whole cell as a weighted average of the values on the boundary vertices. We also prove some characterizations and properties of the weights.

Extensions and their Minimizations on the Sierpinski Gasket

We study the extension problem on the Sierpinski Gasket ($SG$). In the first part we consider minimizing the functional $\mathcal{E}_λ(f) = \mathcal{E}(f,f) + λ\int f^2 d μ$ with prescribed values at a finite set of points where $\mathcal{E}$ denotes the energy (the analog of $\int |\nabla f|^2$ in Euclidean space) and $μ$ denotes the standard self-similiar measure on $SG$. We explicitly construct the minimizer $f(x) = \sum_{i} c_i G_λ(x_i, x)$ for some constants $c_i$, where $G_λ$ is the resolvent for $λ\geq 0$. We minimize the energy over sets in $SG$ by calculating the explicit quadratic form $\mathcal{E}(f)$ of the minimizer $f$. We consider properties of this quadratic form for arbitrary sets and then analyze some specific sets. One such set we consider is the bottom row of a graph approximation of $SG$. We describe both the quadratic form and a discretized form in terms of Haar functions which corresponds to the continuous result established in a previous paper. In the second part, we study a similar problem this time minimizing $\int_{SG} |Δf(x)|^2 d μ(x)$ for general measures. In both cases, by using standard methods we show the existence and uniqueness to the minimization problem. We then study properties of the unique minimizers.

Average Number of Lattice Points in a Disk

The difference between the number of lattice points in a disk of radius $\sqrt{t}/2π$ and the area of the disk $t/4π$ is equal to the error in the Weyl asymptotic estimate for the eigenvalue counting function of the Laplacian on the standard flat torus. We give a sharp asymptotic expression for the average value of the difference over the interval $0 \leq t \leq R$. We obtain similar results for families of ellipses. We also obtain relations to the eigenvalue counting function for the Klein bottle and projective plane.

Harmonic functions and the spectrum of the Laplacian on the Sierpinski carpet

Kusuoka and Zhou have defined the Laplacian on the Sierpinski carpet using average values of functions on small cells and the graph structure of cell adjacency. We have implemented an algorithm that uses their method to approximate solutions to boundary value problems. As a result we have a wealth of data concerning harmonic functions with prescribed boundary values, and eigenfunctions of the Laplacian with either Neumann or Dirichlet boundary conditions. We will present some of this data and discuss some ideas for defining normal derivatives on the boundary of the carpet.

Orthogonal Polynomials on the Sierpinski Gasket

The construction of a Laplacian on a class of fractals which includes the Sierpinski gasket ({\bf $SG$}) has given rise to an intensive research on analysis on fractals. For instance, a complete theory of polynomials and power series on $SG$ has been developed by one of us and his coauthors. We build on this body of work to construct certain analogs of classical orthogonal polynomials (OP) on $SG$. In particular, we investigate key properties of these OP on $SG$, including a three-term recursion formula and the asymptotics of the coefficients appearing in this recursion. Moreover, we develop numerical tools that allow us to graph a number of these OP. Finally, we use these numerical tools to investigate the structure of the zero and the nodal sets of these polynomials.

Pseudo-differential Operators on Fractals

We define and study pseudo-differential operators on a class of fractals that include the post-critically finite self-similar sets and Sierpinski carpets. Using the sub-Gaussian estimates of the heat operator we prove that our operators have kernels that decay and, in the constant coefficient case, are smooth off the diagonal. Our analysis can be extended to product of fractals. While our results are applicable to a larger class of metric measure spaces with Laplacian, we use them to study elliptic, hypoelliptic, and quasi-elliptic operators on p.c.f. fractals, answering a few open questions posed in a series of recent papers. We extend our class of operators to include the so called Hörmander hypoelliptic operators and we initiate the study of wavefront sets and microlocal analysis on p.c.f. fractals.

Exact Spectral Asymptotics on the Sierpinski Gasket

One of the ways that analysis on fractals is more complicated than analysis on manifolds is that the asymptotic behavior of the spectral counting function $N(t)$ has a power law modulated by a nonconstant multiplicatively periodic function. Nevertheless, we show that for the Sierpinski gasket it is possible to write an exact formula, with no remainder term, valid for almost every $t$. This is a stronger result than is valid on manifolds.

Spectral Asymptotics Revisited

We introduce two new heuristic ideas concerning the spectrum of a Laplacian, and we give theorems and conjectures from the realms of manifolds, graphs and fractals that validate these heuristics. The first heuristic concerns Laplacians that do not have discrete spectra: here we introduce a notion of "spectral mass", an average of the diagonal of the kernel of the spectral projection operator, and show that this can serve as a substitute for the eigenvalue counting function. The second heuristic is an "asymptotic Schur's lemma" that describes the proportions of the spectrum that transforms according to the irreducible representations of a finite group that acts as a symmetric group of the Laplacian. For this to be valid we require the existence of a fundamental domain with relatively small boundary. We also give a version in the case that the symmetry groups is a compact Lie group. Many of our results are reformulations of known results, and some are merely conjectures, but there is something to be gained by looking at them together with a new perspective.

Analysis of the Laplacian and Spectral Operators on the Vicsek Set

We study the spectral decomposition of the Laplacian on a family of fractals $\mathcal{VS}_n$ that includes the Vicsek set for $n=2$, extending earlier research on the Sierpinski Gasket. We implement an algorithm [24] for spectral decimation of eigenfunctions of the Laplacian, and explicitly compute these eigenfunctions and some of their properties. We give an algorithm for computing inner products of eigenfunctions. We explicitly compute solutions to the heat equation and wave equation for Neumann boundary conditions. We study gaps in the ratios of eigenvalues and eigenvalue clusters. We give an explicit formula for the Green's function on $\mathcal{VS}_n$. Finally, we explain how the spectrum of the Laplacian on $\mathcal{VS}_n$ converges as $n \to \infty$ to the spectrum of the Laplacian on two crossed lines (the limit of the sets $\mathcal{VS}_n$.)

The resolvent kernel for PCF self-similar fractals

For the Laplacian $Δ$ defined on a p.c.f. self-similar fractal, we give an explicit formula for the resolvent kernel of the Laplacian with Dirichlet boundary conditions, and also with Neumann boundary conditions. That is, we construct a symmetric function $G^{(λ)}$ which solves $(λ\mathbb{I} - Δ)^{-1} f(x) = \int G^{(λ)}(x,y) f(y) dμ(y)$. The method is similar to Kigami's construction of the Green kernel in \cite[\S3.5]{Kig01} and is expressed as a sum of scaled and "translated" copies of a certain function $ψ^{(λ)}$ which may be considered as a fundamental solution of the resolvent equation. Examples of the explicit resolvent kernel formula are given for the unit interval, standard Sierpinski gasket, and the level-3 Sierpinski gasket $SG_3$.
