Self-similar Dirichlet forms on polygon carpets

We construct symmetric self-similar diffusions with sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates on two types of polygon carpets, which are natural generalizations of planner Sierpinski carpets (SC). The first ones are called perfect polygon carpets that are natural analogs of SC in that any intersection cells are either side-to-side or point-to-point. The second ones are called bordered polygon carpets which satisfy the boundary including condition as SC but allow distinct contraction ratios.

Existence and uniqueness of diffusions on the Julia sets of Misiurewicz-Sierpinski maps

We study the balanced resistance forms on the Julia sets of Misiurewicz-Sierpinski maps, which are self-similar resistance forms with equal weights. In particular, we use a theorem of Sabot to prove the existence and uniqueness of balanced forms on these Julia sets. We also provide an explorative study on the resistance forms on the Julia sets of rational maps with periodic critical points.

Laplacians on Julia sets of rational maps

The study of Julia sets gives a new and natural way to look at fractals. When mathematicians investigated the special class of Misiurewicz's rational maps, they found out that there is a Julia set which is homeomorphic to a well known fractal, the Sierpinski gasket. In this paper, we apply the method of Kigami to give rise to a new construction of Laplacians on the Sierpinski gasket like Julia sets with a dynamically invariant property.

Sobolev spaces and trace theorem on the Sierpinski gasket

On the Sierpinski gasket $\mathcal{SG}$, we consider Sobolev spaces $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ associated with the standard Laplacian $Δ$ with order $σ\geq 0$. When $σ\in\mathbb{Z}^+$, $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ consists of functions equipped with $L^2$ norms of the function itself and its Laplacians up to $σ$ order; when $σ\notin \mathbb{Z}^+$, we fill up the gaps between integer orders by using complex interpolation. Let $L^2_{σ, D}(\mathcal{SG})=(I-Δ_D)^{-σ}L^2(\mathcal{SG})$ where $Δ_D$ is the Dirichlet Laplacian associated with $Δ$. Let $\{p_n\}_{n\geq 0}$ be a collection of countably many points located along one of the symmetrical axes of $\mathcal{SG}$. We make a full characterization of the trace spaces of $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ and $L^2_{σ,D}(\mathcal{SG})$ to $\{p_n\}_{n\geq 0}$. Using this, we get a full description of the relationship between $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ and $L^2_{σ,D}(\mathcal{SG})$ for $σ\geq 0$. The result indicates that when $σ-\frac{\log 3}{2\log5}\in \mathbb{Z}^+$, $L^2_{σ, D}(\mathcal{SG})$ is not closed in $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ and has an infinite codimension. Otherwise, $L^2_{σ, D}(\mathcal{SG})$ is closed in $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ with a finite codimension. Similar result holds for the Neumann case. Another consequence of the trace result is that the Sobolev spaces $L^2_σ(\mathcal{SG})$ are stable under complex interpolation for $σ\geq 0$ although they are defined by piecewise interpolation between integer orders.

Sobolev spaces on p.c.f. self-similar sets: boundary behavior and interpolation theorems

We study the Sobolev spaces $H^σ(K)$ and $H^σ_0(K)$ on p.c.f. self-similar sets in terms of the boundary behavior of functions. First, for $σ\in \mathbb{R}^+$, we make an exact description of the tangents of functions in $H^σ(K)$ at the boundary. Second, we characterize $H_0^σ(K)$ as the space of functions in $H^σ(K)$ with zero tangent of an appropriate order depending on $σ$. Last, we extend $H^σ(K)$ to $σ\in\mathbb{R}$, and obtain various interpolation theorems with $σ\in\mathbb{R}^+$ or $σ\in\mathbb{R}$. We illustrate that there is a countable set of critical orders, that arises naturally in the boundary behavior of functions, such that $H^σ_0(K)$ presents a critical phenomenon if $σ$ is critical. These orders will play a crucial role in our study. They are just the values in $\frac 12+\mathbb{Z}_+$ in the classical case, but are much more complicated in the fractal case.

Sobolev spaces on p.c.f. self-similar sets: critical orders and atomic decompositions

We consider the Sobolev type spaces $H^σ(K)$ with $σ\geq 0$, where $K$ is a post-critically finite self-similar set with the natural boundary. Firstly, we compare different classes of Sobolev spaces $H^σ_N(K),H^σ_D(K)$ and $H^σ(K)$, {and observe} a sequence of critical orders of $σ$ in our comparison theorem. Secondly, We present a general atomic decomposition theorem of Sobolev spaces $H^σ(K)$, where the same critical orders play an important role. At the same time, we provide purely analytic approaches for various Besov type characterizations of Sobolev spaces $H^σ(K)$.

Open set condition and pseudo Hausdorff measure of self-affine IFSs

Let $A$ be an $n\times n$ real expanding matrix and $\mathcal{D}$ be a finite subset of $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $0\in\mathcal{D}$. The family of maps $\{f_d(x)=A^{-1}(x+d)\}_{d\in\mathcal{D}}$ is called a self-affine iterated function system (self-affine IFS). The self-affine set $K=K(A,\mathcal{D})$ is the unique compact set determined by $(A, {\mathcal D})$ satisfying the set-valued equation $K=\displaystyle\bigcup_{d\in\mathcal{D}}f_d(K)$. The number $s=n\,\ln(\# \mathcal{D})/\ln(q)$ with $q=|\det(A)|$, is the so-called pseudo similarity dimension of $K$. As shown by He and Lau, one can associate with $A$ and any number $s\ge 0$ a natural pseudo Hausdorff measure denoted by $\mathcal{H}_w^s.$ In this paper, we show that, if $s$ is chosen to be the pseudo similarity dimension of $K$, then the condition $\mathcal{H}_w^s(K)> 0$ holds if and only if the IFS $\{f_d\}_{d\in\mathcal{D}}$ satisfies the open set condition (OSC). This extends the well-known result for the self-similar case that the OSC is equivalent to $K$ having positive Hausdorff measure $\mathcal{H}^s$ for a suitable $s$. Furthermore, we relate the exact value of pseudo Hausdorff measure $\mathcal{H}_w^s(K)$ to a notion of upper $s$-density with respect to the pseudo norm $w(x)$ associated with $A$ for the measure $μ=\lim\limits_{M\to\infty}\sum\limits_{d_0,\dotsc,d_{M-1}\in\mathcal{D}}δ_{d_0 + Ad_1 + \dotsb + A^{M-1}d_{M-1}}$ in the case that $\#\mathcal{D}\le\lvert\det A\rvert$.

Higher order tangents and Higher order Laplacians on Sierpinski Gasket Type Fractals

We study higher order tangents and higher order Laplacians on p.c.f. self-similar sets with fully symmetric structures, such as $D3$ or $D4$ symmetric fractals. Firstly, let $x$ be a vertex point in the graphs that approximate the fractal, we prove that for any $f$ defined near $x$, the higher oder weak tangent of $f$ at $x$, if exists, is the uniform limit of local multiharmonic functions that agree with $f$ in some sense near $x$. Secondly, we prove that the higher order Laplacian on a fractal can be expressible as a renormalized uniform limit of higher order graph Laplacians on the graphs that approximate the fractal. The main technical tool is the theory of local multiharmonic functions and local monomials analogous to $(x-x_0)^j/j!$. The results in this paper are closely related to the theory of local Taylor approximations, splines and entire analytic functions. Some of our results can be extended to general p.c.f. fractals. In Appendix of the paper, we provide a recursion algorithm for the exact calculations of the boundary values of the monomials for $D3$ or $D4$ symmetric fractals, which is shorter and more direct than the previous work on the Sierpinski gasket.

Some Properties of the Derivatives on Sierpinski Gasket Type Fractals

In this paper, we focus on Strichartz's derivatives, a family of derivatives including the normal derivative, on p.c.f. (post critically finite) fractals, which are defined at vertex points in the graphs that approximate the fractal. We obtain a weak continuity property of the derivatives for functions in the domain of the Laplacian. For a function with zero normal derivative at any fixed vertex, the derivatives, including the normal derivatives of the neighboring vertices will decay to zero. The optimal rates of approximations are described and several non-trivial examples are provided to illustrate that our estimates are sharp. We also study the boundness property of derivatives for functions in the domain of the Laplacian. A necessary condition for a function having a weak tangent of order one at a vertex point is provided. Furthermore, we give a counter-example of a conjecture of Strichartz on the existence of higher order weak tangents.

The Laplacian on the unit square in a self-similar manner

In this paper, we show how to construct the standard Laplacian on the unit square in a self-similar manner. We rewrite the familiar mean value property of planar harmonic functions in terms of averge values on small squares, from which we could know how the planar self-similar resistance form and the Laplacian look like. This approach combines the constructive limit-of-difference-quotients method of Kigami for p.c.f. self-similar sets and the method of averages introduced by Kusuoka and Zhou for the Sierpinski carpet.

Boundary Value Problems for a Family of Domains in the Sierpinski Gasket

For a family of domains in the Sierpinski gasket, we study harmonic functions of finite energy, characterizing them in terms of their boundary values, and study their normal derivatives on the boundary. We characterize those domains for which there is an extension operator for functions of finite energy. We give an explicit construction of the Green's function for these domains.

Exact Hausdorff and packing measures of linear Cantor sets with overlaps

Let $K$ be the attractor of a linear iterated function system (IFS) $S_j(x)=ρ_jx+b_j,$ $j=1,\cdots,m$, on the real line satisfying the generalized finite type condition (whose invariant open set $\mathcal{O}$ is an interval) with an irreducible weighted incidence matrix. This condition was introduced by Lau \& Ngai recently as a natural generalization of the open set condition, allowing us to include many important overlapping cases. They showed that the Hausdorff and packing dimensions of $K$ coincide and can be calculated in terms of the spectral radius of the weighted incidence matrix. Let $α$ be the dimension of $K$. In this paper, we state that \begin{equation*} \mathcal{H}^α(K\cap J)\leq |J|^α\end{equation*} for all intervals $J\subset\overline{\mathcal{O}}$, and \begin{equation*} \mathcal{P}^α(K\cap J)\geq |J|^α\end{equation*} for all intervals $J\subset\overline{\mathcal{O}}$ centered in $K$, where $\mathcal{H}^α$ denotes the $α$-dimensional Hausdorff measure and $\mathcal{P}^α$ denotes the $α$-dimensional packing measure. This result extends a recent work of Olsen where the open set condition is required. We use these inequalities to obtain some precise density theorems for the Hausdorff and packing measures of $K$. Moreover, using these densities theorems, we describe a scheme for computing $\mathcal{H}^α(K)$ exactly as the minimum of a finite set of elementary functions of the parameters of the IFS. We also obtain an exact algorithm for computing $\mathcal{P}^α(K)$ as the maximum of another finite set of elementary functions of the parameters of the IFS. These results extend previous ones by Ayer \& Strichartz and Feng, respectively, and apply to some new classes allowing us to include linear Cantor sets with overlaps.

Exact spectrum of the Laplacian on a domain in the Sierpinski gasket

For a certain domain $Ω$ in the Sierpinski gasket $\mathcal{SG}$ whose boundary is a line segment, a complete description of the eigenvalues of the Laplacian, with an exact count of dimensions of eigenspaces, under the Dirichlet and Neumann boundary conditions is presented. The method developed in this paper is a weak version of the spectral decimation method due to Fukushima and Shima, since for a lot of "bad" eigenvalues the spectral decimation method can not be used directly. Let $ρ^0(x)$, $ρ^Ω(x)$ be the eigenvalue counting functions of the Laplacian associated to $\mathcal{SG}$ and $Ω$ respectively. We prove a comparison between $ρ^0(x)$ and $ρ^Ω(x)$ says that $ 0\leq ρ^{0}(x)-ρ^Ω(x)\leq C x^{\log2/\log 5}\log x$ for sufficiently large $x$ for some positive constant $C$. As a consequence, $ρ^Ω(x)=g(\log x)x^{\log 3/\log 5}+O(x^{\log2/\log5}\log x)$ as $x\rightarrow\infty$, for some (right-continuous discontinuous) $\log 5$-periodic function $g:\mathbb{R}\rightarrow \mathbb{R}$ with $0<\inf_{\mathbb{R}}g<\sup_\mathbb{R}g<\infty$. Moreover, we explain that the asymptotic expansion of $ρ^Ω(x)$ should admit a second term of the order $\log2/\log 5$, that becomes apparent from the experimental data. This is very analogous to the conjectures of Weyl and Berry.

Continuity of packing measure function of self-similar iterated function systems

In this paper, we focus on the packing measure of self-similar sets. Let $K$ be a self-similar set whose Hausdorff dimension and packing dimension equal $s$, we state that if $K$ satisfies the strong open set condition with an open set $\mathcal{O}$, then $\mathcal{P}^s(K\cap B(x,r))\geq (2r)^s$ for each open ball $B(x,r)\subset \mathcal{O}$ centered in $K$, where $\mathcal{P}^s$ denotes the $s$-dimensional packing measure. We use this inequality to obtain some precise density theorems for packing measure of self-similar sets, which can be applied to compute the exact value of the $s$-dimensional packing measure $\mathcal{P}^s(K)$ of $K$. Moreover, by using the above results, we show the continuity of the packing measure function of the attractors on the space of self-similar iterated function systems satisfying the strong separation condition. This result gives a complete answer to a question posed by L. Olsen.
