A Transferable Recommender Approach for Selecting the Best Density Functional Approximations in Chemical Discovery

Approximate density functional theory (DFT) has become indispensable owing to its cost-accuracy trade-off in comparison to more computationally demanding but accurate correlated wavefunction theory. To date, however, no single density functional approximation (DFA) with universal accuracy has been identified, leading to uncertainty in the quality of data generated from DFT. With electron density fitting and transfer learning, we build a DFA recommender that selects the DFA with the lowest expected error with respect to gold standard but cost-prohibitive coupled cluster theory in a system-specific manner. We demonstrate this recommender approach on vertical spin-splitting energy evaluation for challenging transition metal complexes. Our recommender predicts top-performing DFAs and yields excellent accuracy (ca. 2 kcal/mol) for chemical discovery, outperforming both individual transfer learning models and the single best functional in a set of 48 DFAs. We demonstrate the transferability of the DFA recommender to experimentally synthesized compounds with distinct chemistry.

Aperiodicity, topological freeness and pure outerness: from group actions to Fell bundles

We generalise various non-triviality conditions for group actions to Fell bundles over discrete groups and prove several implications between them. We also study sufficient criteria for the reduced section C*-algebra C_r(B) of a Fell bundle (B_g) to be strongly purely infinite. If the unit fibre A=B_e contains an essential ideal that is separable or of Type I, then the Fell bundle is aperiodic if and only if it is topologically free. If, in addition, G=Z or G=Z/p for a square-free number p, then these equivalent conditions are satisfied if and only if A detects ideals in C_r(B), if and only if A^+ \ {0} supports C_r(B) in the Cuntz sense. For G as above and arbitrary A, C_r(B) is simple if and only if the Fell bundle B is minimal and pointwise outer. In general, B is aperiodic if and only if each of its non-trivial fibres has a non-trivial Connes spectrum. If G is finite or if A contains an essential ideal that is of Type I or simple, then aperiodicity is equivalent to pointwise pure outerness.

Inverse semigroup actions as groupoid actions

To an inverse semigroup, we associate an étale groupoid such that its actions on topological spaces are equivalent to actions of the inverse semigroup. Both the object and the arrow space of this groupoid are non-Hausdorff. We show that this construction provides an adjoint functor to the functor that maps a groupoid to its inverse semigroup of bisections, where we turn étale groupoids into a category using algebraic morphisms. We also discuss how to recover a groupoid from this inverse semigroup.

Iterated crossed products for groupoid fibrations

We define and study fibrations of topological groupoids. We interpret a groupoid fibration L->H with fibre G as an action of H on G by groupoid equivalences. Our main result shows that a crossed product for an action of L is isomorphic to an iterated crossed product first by G and then by H. Here groupoid action means a Fell bundle over the groupoid, and crossed product means the section C*-algebra.

Noncommutative coarse geometry

We use compactifications of C*-algebras to introduce noncommutative coarse geometry. We transfer a noncommutative coarse structure on a C*-algebra with an action of a locally compact Abelian group by translations to Rieffel deformations and prove that the resulting noncommutative coarse spaces are coarsely equivalent. We construct a noncommutative coarse structure from a cocompact continuously square-integrable action of a group and show that this is coarsely equivalent to the standard coarse structure on the group in question. We define noncommutative coarse maps through certain completely positive maps that induce *-homomorphisms on the boundaries of the compactifications. We lift *-homomorphisms between separable, nuclear boundaries to noncommutative coarse maps and prove an analogous lifting theorem for maps between the metrisable boundaries of ordinary locally compact spaces.

Crossed products for actions of crossed modules on C*-algebras

We decompose the crossed product functor for actions of crossed modules of locally compact groups on C*-algebras into more elementary constructions: taking crossed products by group actions and fibres in C*-algebras over topological spaces. For this, we extend the theory of partial crossed products from groups to crossed modules; extend Takesaki-Takai duality to Abelian crossed modules; show that equivalent crossed modules have equivalent categories of actions on C*-algebras; and show that certain crossed modules are automatically equivalent to Abelian crossed modules.

Cuspidal representations of reductive p-adic groups are relatively injective and projective

Cuspidal representations of a reductive p-adic group G over a field of characteristic different from p are relatively injective and projective with respect to extensions that split by a U-equivariant linear map for any subgroup U that is compact modulo the centre. The category of smooth representations over a field whose characteristic does not divide the pro-order of G is the product of the subcategories of cuspidal representations and of subrepresentations of direct sums of parabolically induced representations.

Groupoids in categories with pretopology

We survey the general theory of groupoids, groupoid actions, groupoid principal bundles, and various kinds of morphisms between groupoids in the framework of categories with pretopology. We study extra assumptions on pretopologies that are needed for this theory. We check these extra assumptions in several categories with pretopologies. Functors between groupoids may be localised at equivalences in two ways. One uses spans of functors, the other bibundles (commuting actions) of groupoids. We show that both approaches give equivalent bicategories. Another type of groupoid morphisms, called actors, are closely related to functors between the categories of groupoid actions. We also generalise actors using bibundles, and show that this gives another bicategory of groupoids.

Product systems over Ore monoids

We interpret the Cuntz-Pimsner covariance condition as a nondegeneracy condition for representations of product systems. We show that Cuntz-Pimsner algebras over Ore monoids are constructed through inductive limits and section algebras of Fell bundles over groups. We construct a groupoid model for the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra coming from an action of an Ore monoid on a space by topological correspondences. We characterise when this groupoid is effective or locally contracting and describe its invariant subsets and invariant measures.

A spectral interpretation for the zeros of the Riemann zeta function

Based on work of Alain Connes, I have constructed a spectral interpretation for zeros of L-functions. Here we specialise this construction to the Riemann zeta function. We construct an operator on a nuclear Frechet space whose spectrum is the set of non-trivial zeros of zeta. We exhibit the explicit formula for the zeros of the Riemann zeta function as a character formula.

An equivariant Lefschetz fixed-point formula for correspondences

We compute the trace of an endomorphism in equivariant bivariant K-theory for a compact group G in several ways: geometrically using geometric correspondences, algebraically using localisation, and as a Hattori-Stallings trace. This results in an equivariant version of the classical Lefschetz fixed-point theorem, which applies to arbitrary equivariant correspondences, not just maps.

C*-Algebras over Topological Spaces: Filtrated K-Theory

We define the filtrated K-theory of a C*-algebra over a finite topological space X and explain how to construct a spectral sequence that computes the bivariant Kasparov theory over X in terms of filtrated K-theory. For finite spaces with totally ordered lattice of open subsets, this spectral sequence becomes an exact sequence as in the Universal Coefficient Theorem, with the same consequences for classification. We also exhibit an example where filtrated K-theory is not yet a complete invariant. We describe a space with four points and two C*-algebras over this space in the bootstrap class that have isomorphic filtrated K-theory but are not KK(X)-equivalent. For this particular space, we enrich filtrated K-theory by another K-theory functor, so that there is again a Universal Coefficient Theorem. Thus the enriched filtrated K-theory is a complete invariant for purely infinite, stable C*-algebras with this particular spectrum and belonging to the appropriate bootstrap class.

A functorial equivariant K-theory spectrum and an equivariant Lefschetz formula

We construct a symmetric spectrum representing the G-equivariant K-theory of C*-algebras for a compact group or a proper groupoid G. Our spectrum is functorial for equivariant *-homomorphisms. We use this to establish the additivity of the canonical traces for endomorphisms of strongly dualisable objects in the bootstrap class in equivariant KK, in analogy to previous results for traces in stable homotopy theory. As an application, we prove an equivariant analogue of the Lefschetz trace formula for Hodgkin Lie groups.

The Second Adjointness Theorem for reductive p-adic groups

We prove that the Jacquet restriction functor for a parabolic subgroup of a reductive group over a non-Archimedean local field is right adjoint to the parabolic induction functor for the opposite parabolic subgroup, in the generality of smooth group representations on R-modules for any unital ring R in which the residue field characteristic is invertible. Correction: it turned out that the paper contains a mistake (in Lemma 3.4), which the authors have been unable to fix. This renders the proof of the main theorem incomplete.

A higher category approach to twisted actions on C*-algebras

C*-algebras form a 2-category with \Star{}homomorphisms or correspondences as morphisms and unitary intertwiners as 2-morphisms. We use this structure to define weak actions of 2-categories, weakly equivariant maps between weak actions, and modifications between weakly equivariant maps. In the group case, we identify the resulting notions with known ones, including Busby-Smith twisted actions and equivalence of such actions, covariant representations, and saturated Fell bundles. For 2-groups, weak actions combine twists in the sense of Green and Busby-Smith. The Packer-Raeburn Stabilisation Trick implies that all Busby-Smith twisted group actions of locally compact groups are Morita equivalent to classical group actions. We generalise this to actions of strict 2-groupoids.

Bivariant K-theory via correspondences

We use correspondences to define a purely topological equivariant bivariant K-theory for spaces with a proper groupoid action. Our notion of correspondence differs slightly from that of Connes and Skandalis. We replace smooth K-oriented maps by a class of K-oriented normal maps, which are maps together with a certain factorisation. Our construction does not use any special features of equivariant K-theory. To highlight this, we construct bivariant extensions for arbitrary equivariant multiplicative cohomology theories. We formulate necessary and sufficient conditions for certain duality isomorphisms in the geometric bivariant K-theory and verify these conditions in some cases, including smooth manifolds with a smooth cocompact action of a Lie group. One of these duality isomorphisms reduces bivariant K-theory to K-theory with support conditions. Since similar duality isomorphisms exist in Kasparov theory, both bivariant K-theories agree if there is such a duality isomorphism.

preprint2009arXiv

Dualities in equivariant Kasparov theory

We study several duality isomorphisms between equivariant bivariant K-theory groups, generalising Kasparov's first and second Poincare duality isomorphisms. We use the first duality to define an equivariant generalisation of Lefschetz invariants of generalised self-maps. The second duality is related to the description of bivariant Kasparov theory for commutative C*-algebras by families of elliptic pseudodifferential operators. For many groupoids, both dualities apply to a universal proper G-space. This is a basic requirement for the dual Dirac method and allows us to describe the Baum-Connes assembly map via localisation of categories.

E-Theory for C*-algebras over topological spaces

We define E-theory for separable C*-algebras over second countable topological spaces and establish its basic properties. This includes an approximation theorem that relates the E-theory over a general space to the E-theories over finite approximations to this space. We obtain effective criteria for determining the invertibility of E-theory elements over possibly infinite-dimensional spaces. Furthermore, we prove a Universal Multicoefficient Theorem for C*-algebras over totally disconnected metrisable compact spaces.

Equivariant embedding theorems and topological index maps

The construction of topological index maps for equivariant families of Dirac operators requires factoring a general smooth map through maps of a very simple type: zero sections of vector bundles, open embeddings, and vector bundle projections. Roughly speaking, a normally non-singular map is a map together with such a factorisation. These factorisations are models for the topological index map. Under some assumptions concerning the existence of equivariant vector bundles, any smooth map admits a normal factorisation, and two such factorisations are unique up to a certain notion of equivalence. To prove this, we generalise the Mostow Embedding Theorem to spaces equipped with proper groupoid actions. We also discuss orientations of normally non-singular maps with respect to a cohomology theory and show that oriented normally non-singular maps induce wrong-way maps on the chosen cohomology theory. For K-oriented normally non-singular maps, we also get a functor to Kasparov's equivariant KK-theory. We interpret this functor as a topological index map.

Excision in Hochschild and cyclic homology without continuous linear sections

We prove that continuous Hochschild and cyclic homology satisfy excision for extensions of nuclear H-unital Frechet algebras and use this to compute them for the algebra of Whitney functions on an arbitrary closed subset of a smooth manifold. Using a similar excision result for periodic cyclic homology, we also compute the periodic cyclic homology of algebras of smooth functions and Whitney functions on closed subsets of smooth manifolds.

Localisation and colocalisation of triangulated categories at thick subcategories

Given a thick subcategory of a triangulated category, we define a colocalisation and a natural long exact sequence that involves the original category and its localisation and colocalisation at the subcategory. Similarly, we construct a natural long exact sequence containing the canonical map between a homological functor and its total derived functor with respect to a thick subcategory.

Resolutions for representations of reductive p-adic groups via their buildings

Schneider-Stuhler and Vigneras have used cosheaves on the affine Bruhat-Tits building to construct natural finite type projective resolutions for admissible representations of reductive p-adic groups in characteristic not equal to p. We use a system of idempotent endomorphisms of a representation with certain properties to construct a cosheaf and a sheaf on the building. We establish that these are acyclic and compute homology and cohomology with these coefficients. This implies Bernstein's result that certain subcategories of the category of representations are Serre subcategories. Furthermore, we also get results for convex subcomplexes of the building. Following work of Korman, this leads to trace formulas for admissible representations.

Smooth and rough modules over self-induced algebras

A non-unital algebra in a closed monoidal category is called self-induced if the multiplication induces an isomorphism between A\otimes_A A and A. For such an algebra, we define smoothening and roughening functors that retract the category of modules onto two equivalent subcategories of smooth and rough modules, respectively. These functors generalise previous constructions for group representations on bornological vector spaces. We also study the pairs of adjoint functors between categories of smooth and rough modules that are induced by bimodules and Morita equivalence.

Coarse and equivariant co-assembly maps

We study an equivariant co-assembly map that is dual to the usual Baum-Connes assembly map and closely related to coarse geometry, equivariant Kasparov theory, and the existence of dual Dirac morphisms. As applications, we prove the existence of dual Dirac morphisms for groups with suitable compactifications, that is, satisfying the Carlsson-Pedersen condition, and we study a K-theoretic counterpart to the proper Lipschitz cohomology of Connes, Gromov and Moscovici.

Equivariant Lefschetz maps for simplicial complexes and smooth manifolds

Let X be a locally compact space with a continuous proper action of a locally compact group G. Assuming that X satisfies a certain kind of duality in equivariant bivariant Kasparov theory, we can enrich the classical construction of Lefschetz numbers to equivariant K-homology classes. We compute the Lefschetz invariants for self-maps of finite-dimensional simplicial complexes and of self-maps of smooth manifolds. The resulting invariants are independent of the extra structure used to compute them. Since smooth manifolds can be triangulated, we get two formulas for the same Lefschetz invariant in these cases. The resulting identity is closely related to the equivariant Lefschetz Fixed Point Theorem of Luck and Rosenberg.

Equivariant representable K-theory

We interpret certain equivariant Kasparov groups as equivariant representable K-theory groups. We compute these groups via a classifying space and as K-theory groups of suitable sigma-C*-algebras. We also relate equivariant vector bundles to these sigma-C*-algebras and provide sufficient conditions for equivariant vector bundles to generate representable K-theory. Mostly we work in the generality of locally compact groupoids with Haar system.

Homological algebra in bivariant K-theory and other triangulated categories

Bivariant (equivariant) K-theory is the standard setting for non-commutative topology. We may carry over various techniques from homotopy theory and homological algebra to this setting. Here we do this for some basic notions from homological algebra: phantom maps, exact chain complexes, projective resolutions, and derived functors. We introduce these notions and apply them to examples from bivariant K-theory. An important observation of Beligiannis is that we can approximate our category by an Abelian category in a canonical way, such that our homological concepts reduce to the corresponding ones in this Abelian category. We compute this Abelian approximation in several interesting examples, where it turns out to be very concrete and tractable. The derived functors comprise the second tableau of a spectral sequence that, in favourable cases, converges towards Kasparov groups and other interesting objects. This mechanism is the common basis for many different spectral sequences. Here we only discuss the very simple 1-dimensional case, where the spectral sequences reduce to short exact sequences.

Homological algebra in bivariant K-theory and other triangulated categories. II

We use homological ideals in triangulated categories to get a sufficient criterion for a pair of subcategories in a triangulated category to be complementary. We apply this criterion to construct the Baum-Connes assembly map for locally compact groups and torsion-free discrete quantum groups. Our methods are related to the abstract version of the Adams spectral sequence by Brinkmann and Christensen.

Categorical aspects of bivariant K-theory

This survey article on bivariant Kasparov theory and E-theory is mainly intended for readers with a background in homotopical algebra and category theory. We approach both bivariant K-theories via their universal properties and equip them with extra structure such as a tensor product and a triangulated category structure. We discuss the construction of the Baum-Connes assembly map via localisation of categories and explain how this is related to the purely topological construction by Davis and Lueck.

Continuous spectral decompositions of Abelian group actions on C*-algebras

Let G be a locally compact Abelian group. Following Ruy Exel, we view Fell bundles over the Pontrjagin dual of G as continuous spectral decompositions of G-actions on C*-algebras. We classify such spectral decompositions using certain dense subspaces related to Marc Rieffel's theory of square-integrability. There is a unique continuous spectral decomposition if the group acts properly on the primitive ideal space of the C*-algebra. But there are also examples of group actions without or with several inequivalent spectral decompositions.

Creation of multiple nanodots by single ions

In the challenging search for tools that are able to modify surfaces on the nanometer scale, heavy ions with energies of several 10 MeV are becoming more and more attractive. In contrast to slow ions where nuclear stopping is important and the energy is dissipated into a large volume in the crystal, in the high energy regime the stopping is due to electronic excitations only. Because of the extremely local (< 1 nm) energy deposition with densities of up to 10E19 W/cm^2, nanoscaled hillocks can be created under normal incidence. Usually, each nanodot is due to the impact of a single ion and the dots are randomly distributed. We demonstrate that multiple periodically spaced dots separated by a few 10 nanometers can be created by a single ion if the sample is irradiated under grazing angles of incidence. By varying this angle the number of dots can be controlled.

Euler characteristics and Gysin sequences for group actions on boundaries

Let G be a locally compact group, let X be a universal proper G-space, and let Z be a G-equivariant compactification of X that is H-equivariantly contractible for each compact subgroup H of G. Let W be the resulting boundary. Assuming the Baum-Connes conjecture for G with coefficients C and C(W), we construct an exact sequence that computes the map on K-theory induced by the embedding of the reduced group C*-algebra of G into the crossed product of G by C(W). This exact sequence involves the equivariant Euler characteristic of X, which we study using an abstract notion of Poincare duality in bivariant K-theory. As a consequence, if G is torsion-free and the Euler characteristic of the orbit space X/G is non-zero, then the unit element of the boundary crossed product is a torsion element whose order is equal to the absolute value of the Euler characteristic of X/G. Furthermore, we get a new proof of a theorem of Lueck and Rosenberg concerning the class of the de Rham operator in equivariant K-homology.

Homological algebra for Schwartz algebras of reductive p-adic groups

Let G be a reductive group over a non-Archimedean local field. Then the canonical functor from the derived category of smooth tempered representations of G to the derived category of all smooth representations of G is fully faithful. Here we consider representations on bornological vector spaces. As a consequence, if V and W are two tempered irreducible representations and if V or W is square-integrable, then Ext_G^n(V,W) vanishes for all n>0. We use this to prove in full generality a formula for the formal dimension of square-integrable representations due to Schneider and Stuhler.

On a representation of the idele class group related to primes and zeros of L-functions

Let K be a global field. Using natural spaces of functions on the adele ring and the idele class group of K, we construct a virtual representation of the idele class group of K whose character is equal to the Weil distribution that occurs in Andre Weil's Explicit Formula. Hence this representation encodes information about the distribution of the prime ideals of K, and it is a spectral interpretation for the poles and zeros of the L-function. It is closely related to the spectral interpretation of Alain Connes.

The Baum-Connes Conjecture via Localisation of Categories

We redefine the Baum-Connes assembly map using simplicial approximation in the equivariant Kasparov category. This new interpretation is ideal for studying functorial properties and gives analogues of the assembly maps for all equivariant homology theories, not just for the K-theory of the crossed product. We extend many of the known techniques for proving the Baum-Connes conjecture to this more general setting.

A descent principle for the Dirac dual Dirac method

Let G be a torsion free discrete group with a finite dimensional classifying space BG. We show that G has a dual Dirac morphism if and only if a certain coarse (co)-assembly map is an isomorphism. Hence the existence of a dual Dirac morphism for such G is a metric, that is, coarse, invariant of G. We obtain similar results for groups with torsion. The framework that we develop is also suitable for studying the Lipschitz and proper Lipschitz cohomology of Connes, Gromov and Moscovici.

Bornological versus topological analysis in metrizable spaces

Given a metrizable topological vector space, we can also use its von Neumann bornology or its bornology of precompact subsets to do analysis. We show that the bornological and topological approaches are equivalent for many problems. For instance, they yield the same concepts of convergence for sequences of points or linear operators, of continuity of functions, of completeness and completion. We also show that the bornological and topological versions of Grothendieck's approximation property are equivalent for Frechet spaces. These results are important for applications in noncommutative geometry. Finally, we investigate the class of ``smooth'' subalgebras appropriate for local cyclic homology and apply some of our results in this context.

Dualizing the coarse assembly map

We formulate and study a new coarse (co-)assembly map. It involves a modification of the Higson corona construction and produces a map dual in an appropriate sense to the standard coarse assembly map. The new assembly map is shown to be an isomorphism in many cases. For the underlying metric space of a group, the coarse co-assembly map is closely related to the existence of a dual Dirac morphism and thus to the Dirac dual Dirac method of attacking the Novikov conjecture.

Smooth group representations on bornological vector spaces

We develop the basic theory of smooth representations of locally compact groups on bornological vector spaces. In this setup, we are able to formulate better general theorems than in the topological case. Still, smooth representations of totally disconnected groups on vector spaces and of Lie groups on Frechet spaces remain special cases of our theory. We identify smooth representations with essential modules over an appropriate convolution algebra. We examine smoothening functors on representations and modules and show that they agree if they are both defined. We establish the basic properties of induction and compact induction functors using adjoint functor techniques. We describe the center of the category of smooth representations.

Equivariant Kasparov theory and generalized homomorphisms

Let G be a locally compact group. We describe elements of KK^G (A,B) by equivariant homomorphisms, following Cuntz's treatment in the non-equivariant case. This yields another proof for the universal property of KK^G: It is the universal split exact stable homotopy functor. To describe a Kasparov triple (E, phi, F) by an equivariant homomorphism, we have to arrange for the Fredholm operator F to be equivariant. This can be done if A is of the form K(L^2G) otimes A' and more generally if the group action on A is proper in the sense of Rieffel and Exel.

preprint2000arXiv

Generalized fixed point algebras and square-integrable group actions

We analzye Rieffel's construction of generalized fixed point algebras in the setting of group actions on Hilbert modules. Let G be a locally compact group acting on a C*-algebra B. We construct a Hilbert module F over the reduced crossed product of G and B, using a pair (E, R), where E is an equivariant Hilbert module over B and R is a dense subspace of E with certain properties. The generalized fixed point algebra is the C*-algebra of compact operators on F. Any Hilbert module over the reduced crossed product arises by this construction for a pair (E, R) that is unique up to isomorphism. A necessary condition for the existence of R is that E be square-integrable. The consideration of square-integrable representations of Abelian groups on Hilbert space shows that this condition is not sufficient and that different choices for R may yield different generalized fixed point algebras. If B is proper in Kasparov's sense, there is a unique R with the required properties. Thus the generalized fixed point algebra only depends on E.
