On the asymptotic behavior of Jacobi polynomials with first varying parameter

We investigate the large nn behavior of Jacobi polynomials with varying parameters Pn(an+α, bn+β)(1−2λ2)P_{n}^{(an+α,\,bn+β)}(1-2λ^{2}) for a,b>−1a,b >-1 and λ∈(0, 1)λ\in(0,\,1). This is a well-studied topic in the literature but some of the published results appear to be discordant. To address this issue we provide an in-depth investigation of the case b=0b = 0, which is most relevant for our applications. Our approach is based on a new and surprisingly simple representation of Pn(an+α, β)(1−2λ2), a>−1P_{n}^{(an+α,\,β)}(1-2λ^{2}),\:a>-1 in terms of two integrals. The integrals' asymptotic behavior is studied using standard tools of asymptotic analysis: one is a Laplace integral and the other is treated via the method of stationary phase. As a consequence we prove that if a∈(2λ1−λ,∞)a\in(\frac{2λ}{1-λ},\infty) then λanPn(an+α,β)(1−2λ2)λ^{an}P_{n}^{(an+α,β)}(1-2λ^{2}) shows exponential decay and we derive simple exponential upper bounds in this region. If a∈(−2λ1+λ, 2λ1−λ)a\in(\frac{-2λ}{1+λ},\,\frac{2λ}{1-λ}) then the decay of λanPn(an+α,β)(1−2λ2)λ^{an}P_{n}^{(an+α,β)}(1-2λ^{2}) is O(n−1/2)\mathcal{O}(n^{-1/2}) and if a∈{−2λ1+λ, 2λ1−λ}a\in\{\frac{-2λ}{1+λ},\,\frac{2λ}{1-λ}\} then λanPn(an+α,β)(1−2λ2)λ^{an}P_{n}^{(an+α,β)}(1-2λ^{2}) decays as O(n−1/3)\mathcal{O}(n^{-1/3}). A new phenomenon occurs in the parameter range a∈(−1,−2λ1+λ)a\in(-1,\frac{-2λ}{1+λ}), where we find that the behavior depends on whether or not an+αan+α is an integer: If a∈(−1,−2λ1+λ)a\in(-1,\frac{-2λ}{1+λ}) and an+αan+α is an integer then λanPn(an+α,β)(1−2λ2)λ^{an}P_{n}^{(an+α,β)}(1-2λ^{2}) decays exponentially. If a∈(−1,−2λ1+λ)a\in(-1,\frac{-2λ}{1+λ}) and an+αan+α is not an integer then λanPn(an+α,β)(1−2λ2)λ^{an}P_{n}^{(an+α,β)}(1-2λ^{2}) may increase exponentially depending on the proximity of the sequence (an+α)n(an + α)_n to integers.

Interpolation without commutants

We introduce a "dual-space approach" to mixed Nevanlinna-Pick/Carathéodory-Schur interpolation in Banach spaces X of holomorphic functions on the disk. Our approach can be viewed as complementary to the well-known commutant lifting approach of D. Sarason and B. Nagy-C.Foiaş. We compute the norm of the minimal interpolant in X by a version of the Hahn-Banach theorem, which we use to extend functionals defined on a subspace of kernels without increasing their norm. This Functional extensions lemma plays a similar role as Sarason's Commutant lifting theorem but it only involves the predual of X and no Hilbert space structure is needed. As an example, we present the respective Pick-type interpolation theorems for Beurling-Sobolev spaces.

lpl_{p}-norms of Fourier coefficients of powers of a Blaschke factor

We determine the asymptotic behavior of the lpl_{p}-norms of the sequence of Taylor coefficients of bnb^{n}, where b=z−λ1−λˉzb=\frac{z-λ}{1-\barλz} is an automorphism of the unit disk, p∈[1,∞]p\in[1,\infty], and nn is large. It is known that in the parameter range p∈[1,2]p\in[1,2] a sharp upper bound \begin{align*} \left|\!\left|b^{n}\right|\!\right|_{l_{p}^A}\leq C_{p}n^{\frac{2-p}{2p}} \end{align*} holds. In this article we find that this estimate is valid even when p∈[1,4)p\in[1,4). We prove that \begin{align*} \left|\!\left|b^{n}\right|\!\right|_{l_{4}^A}\leq C_{4}\left(\frac{\log n}{n}\right)^{\frac{1}{4}} \end{align*} and for p∈(4,∞]p\in(4,\infty] that \begin{align*} \left|\!\left|b^{n}\right|\!\right|_{l_{p}^A}\leq C_{p}n^{\frac{1-p}{3p}} & . \end{align*} We prove that our upper bounds are sharp as nn tends to ∞\infty i.e. they have the correct asymptotic nn dependence.

A constructive approach to Schaeffer's conjecture

J.J. Schaeffer proved that for anyany induced matrix norm and anyany invertible T=T(n)T=T(n) the inequality ∣det⁡T∣∥T−1∥≤S∥T∥n−1\left|\det T\right|\left\Vert T^{-1}\right\Vert \leq\mathcal{S}\left\Vert T\right\Vert ^{n-1} holds with S=S(n)≤en\mathcal{S}=\mathcal{S}(n)\leq\sqrt{en}. He conjectured that the best S\mathcal{S} was actually bounded. This was rebutted by Gluskin-Meyer-Pajor and subsequent contributions by J. Bourgain and H. Queffelec that successively improved lower estimates on S\mathcal{S}. These articles rely on a link to the theory of power sums of complex numbers. A probabilistic or number theoretic analysis of such inequalities is employed to prove the existence of TT with growing S\mathcal{S} but the explicit construction of such TT remains an open task. In this article we propose a constructive approach to Schaeffer's conjecture that is not related to power sum theory. As a consequence we present an explicit sequence of Toeplitz matrices with singleton spectrum {λ}⊂D−{0}\{λ\}\subset\mathbb{D}-\{0\} such that S≥c(λ)n\mathcal{S}\geq c(λ)\sqrt{n}. Our framework naturally extends to provide lower estimates on the resolvent ∥(ζ−T)−1∥\left\Vert (ζ-T)^{-1}\right\Vert when ζ≠0ζ\neq0. We also obtain new upper estimates on the resolvent when the spectrum is given. This yields new upper bounds on ∥T−1∥\left\Vert T^{-1}\right\Vert in terms of the eigenvalues of TT which slightly refine Schaeffer's original estimate.

Boundedness of the differentiation operator in model spaces and application to Peller type inequalities

Given an inner function ΘΘ in the unit disc D\mathbb{D}, we study the boundedness of the differentiation operator which acts from from the model subspace K_Θ=(ΘH2)⊥K\_Θ=\left(ΘH^{2}\right)^{\perp} of the Hardy space H2,H^{2}, equiped with the BMOABMOA-norm, to some radial-weighted Bergman space. As an application, we generalize Peller's inequality for Besov norms of rational functions ff of degree n≥1n\geq1 having no poles in the closed unit disc D‾\overline{\mathbb{D}}.

A model space approach to some classical inequalities for rational functions

We consider the set \mathcal{R}_{n} of rational functions of degree at most n\geq1 with no poles on the unit circle \mathbb{T} and its subclass \mathcal{R}_{n,\, r} consisting of rational functions without poles in the annulus \left\{ξ:\; r\leq|ξ|\leq\frac{1}{r}\right\}. We discuss an approach based on the model space theory which brings some integral representations for functions in \mathcal{R}_{n} and their derivatives. Using this approach we obtain L^{p}-analogs of several classical inequalities for rational functions including the inequalities by P. Borwein and T. Erdélyi, the Spijker Lemma and S.M. Nikolskii's inequalities. These inequalities are shown to be asymptotically sharp as n tends to infinity and the poles of the rational functions approach the unit circle \mathbb{T}.

Décomposition effective de Jordan-Chevalley et ses retombées en enseignement

The purpose of this paper is to point the effectiveness of the Jordan-Chevalley decomposition, i.e. the decomposition of a square matrix UU with coefficients in a field kk containing the eigenvalues of UU as a sum U=D+N,U=D+N, where DD is a diagonalizable matrix and NN a nilpotent matrix which commutes with D.D. The most general version of this decomposition shows that every separable element uu of a kk-algebra AA can be written in a unique way as a sum u=d+n,u=d+n, where d∈Ad \in A is absolutely semi-simple and where n∈An\in A is nilpotent and commutes with d.d. In fact an algorithm, due to C. Chevalley, allows to compute this decomposition: this algorithm is an adaptation to this context of the Newton method, which gives here the exact value of the absolutely semi-simple part dd of uu after a finite number of iterations. We illustrate the effectiveness of this method by computing the decomposition of a 15×1515 \times 15 matrix having eigenvalues of multiplicity 3 which are not computable exactly. We also discuss the other classical method, based on the chinese remainder theorem, which gives the Jordan-Chevalley decomposition under the form u=q(u)+[u−q(u)],u=q(u) +[u-q(u)], with q(u)q(u) absolutely semi-simple, u−q(u)u-q(u) nilpotent, where qq is any solution of a system of congruence equations related to the roots of a polynomial p∈k[x]p\in k[x] such that p(u)=0.p(u)=0. It is indeed possible to compute qq without knowing the roots of pp by applying the algorithm discussed above to π(x),π(x), where π:k[x]→k[x]/pk[x]π: k[x] \to k[x]/pk[x] is the canonical surjection. We obtain this way after 2 iterations the polynomial qq of degree 14 associated to the 15×1515\times 15 matrix mentioned above. We justify by historical considerations the use of the name "Jordan-Chevalley decomposition", instead of the name "Dunford decomposition" which also appears in the literature, and we discuss multiplicative versions of this decomposition in semi-simple Lie groups. We conclude this paper showing why this decomposition should play a central role in a linear algebra course, even at a rather elementary level. Our arguments are based on a teaching experience of more than 10 years in an engineering school located on the Basque Coast.

A Bernstein-type inequality for rational functions in weighted Bergman spaces

Given n≥1n\geq1 and r∈[0,1),r\in[0, 1), we consider the set Rn,r\mathcal{R}_{n, r} of rational functions having at most nn poles all outside of 1rD,\frac{1}{r}\mathbb{D}, were D\mathbb{D} is the unit disc of the complex plane. We give an asymptotically sharp Bernstein-type inequality for functions in Rn,r \mathcal{R}_{n, r}\: (as n tends to infinity and r tends to 1-) in weighted Bergman spaces with "polynomially" decreasing weights. We also prove that this result can not be extended to weighted Bergman spaces with "super-polynomially" decreasing weights.

Interpolation avec contraintes sur des ensembles finis du disque

Given a finite set σof the unit disc \mathbb{D}=\{z\in\mathbb{C}:,\,| z|<1\} and a holomorphic function f in \mathbb{D} which belongs to a class X, we are looking for a function g in another class Y (smaller than X) which minimizes the norm ||g||_{Y} among all functions g such that g_{|σ}=f_{|σ}. For Y=H^{\infty}, and for the corresponding interpolation constant c(σ,\, X,\, H^{\infty}), we show that c(σ,\, X,\, H^{\infty})\leq aϕ_{X}(1-\frac{1-r}{n}) where n=#σ, r=max_{λ\inσ}|λ| and where ϕ_{X}(t) stands for the norm of the evaluation functional f\mapsto f(λ) on the space X. The upper bound is sharp over sets σwith given n and r.

Sharpening a result by E.B. Davies and B. Simon

E. B. Davies et B. Simon have shown (among other things) the following result: if T is an n\times n matrix such that its spectrum σ(T) is included in the open unit disc \mathbb{D}=\{z\in\mathbb{C}:\,|z|<1\} and if C=sup_{k\geq0}||T^{k}||_{E\rightarrow E}, where E stands for \mathbb{C}^{n} endowed with a certain norm |.|, then ||R(1,\, T)||_{E\rightarrow E}\leq C(3n/dist(1,\,σ(T)))^{3/2} where R(λ,\, T) stands for the resolvent of T at point λ. Here, we improve this inequality showing that under the same hypotheses (on the matrix T), ||R(λ,\, T)|| \leq C(5π/3+2\sqrt{2})n^{3/2}/dist(λ,\,σ), for all λ\notinσ(T) such that |λ|\geq1.

Toeplitz condition numbers as an H∞H^{\infty} interpolation problem

The condition numbers CN(T)==∣∣T∣∣.∣∣T−1∣∣CN(T)==||T|| .||T^{-1}|| of Toeplitz and analytic n×nn\times n matrices TT are studied. It is shown that the supremum of CN(T)CN(T) over all such matrices with ∣∣T∣∣≤1||T|| \leq1 and the given minimum of eigenvalues r=mini=1..n∣λi∣>0r=min_{i=1..n}|λ_{i}|>0 behaves as the corresponding supremum over all n×nn\times n matrices (i.e., as 1rn\frac{1}{r{}^{n}} (Kronecker)), and this equivalence is uniform in nn and rr. The proof is based on a use of the Sarason-Sz.Nagy-Foias commutant lifting theorem.

Effective H^{\infty} interpolation constrained by Hardy and Bergman weighted norms

Given a finite set σσ of the unit disc D\mathbb{D} and a holomorphic function ff in D\mathbb{D} which belongs to a class XX we are looking for a function gg in another class YY which minimizes the norm ∣g∣Y|g|_{Y} among all functions gg such that g∣σ=f∣σg_{|σ}=f_{|σ}. Generally speaking, the interpolation constant considered is c(σ, X, Y)=supf∈X, ∥f∥X≤1inf{∣g∣Y: g∣σ=f∣σ} .c(σ,\, X,\, Y)={sup}{}_{f\in X,\,\parallel f\parallel_{X}\leq1}{inf}\{|g|_{Y}:\, g_{|σ}=f_{|σ}\} \,. When Y=H∞Y=H^{\infty}, our interpolation problem includes those of Nevanlinna-Pick (1916), Caratheodory-Schur (1908). Moreover, Carleson's free interpolation (1958) has also an interpretation in terms of our constant c(σ, X, H∞)c(σ,\, X,\, H^{\infty}).} If XX is a Hilbert space belonging to the scale of Hardy and Bergman weighted spaces, we show that c(σ, X, H∞)≤aϕX(1−1−rn)c(σ,\, X,\, H^{\infty})\leq aϕ_{X}(1-\frac{1-r}{n}) where $n=#σ$, r=maxλ∈σ∣λ∣r={max}{}_{λ\inσ}|λ| and where ϕX(t)ϕ_{X}(t) stands for the norm of the evaluation functional f↦f(t)f\mapsto f(t) on the space XX. The upper bound is sharp over sets σσ with given nn and rr.} If XX is a general Hardy-Sobolev space or a general weighted Bergman space (not necessarily of Hilbert type), we also found upper and lower bounds for c(σ, X, H∞)c(σ,\, X,\, H^{\infty}) (sometimes for special sets σσ) but with some gaps between these bounds.} This constrained interpolation is motivated by some applications in matrix analysis and in operator theory.}
