Point spectrum and hypercyclicity problem for a class of truncated Toeplitz operators

In this note we discuss an open problem whether a truncated Toeplitz operator on a model space can be hypercyclic. We compute point spectrum and eigenfunctions for a class of truncated Toeplitz operators with polynomial analytic and antianalytic parts. We show that, for a class of model spaces, truncated Toeplitz operators with symbols of the form $Φ(z) =a \bar{z} +b + cz$, $|a| \ne |c|$, have complete sets of eigenvectors, and, in particular, are not hypercyclic.

Cauchy-de Branges spaces, geometry of their reproducing kernels and multiplication operators

Cauchy-de Branges spaces are Hilbert spaces of entire functions defined in terms of Cauchy transforms of discrete measures on the plane and generalizing the classical de Branges theory. We consider extensions of two important properties of de Branges spaces to this, more general, setting. First, we discuss geometric properties (completeness, Riesz bases) of systems of reproducing kernels corresponding to the zeros of certain entire functions associated to the space. In the case of de Branges spaces they correspond to orthogonal bases of reproducing kernels. The second theme of the paper is a characterization of the density of the domain of multiplication by $z$ in Cauchy-de Branges spaces.

Localization of zeros in Cauchy-de Branges spaces

We study the class of discrete measures in the complex plain with the following property: up to a finite number, all zeros of any Cauchy transform of the measure (with $\ell^2$-data) are localized near the support of the measure. We find several equivalent forms of this property and prove that the parts of the support attracting zeros of Cauchy transforms are ordered by inclusion modulo finite sets.

Backward shift and nearly invariant subspaces of Fock-type spaces

We study the structure of the backward shift invariant and nearly invariant subspaces in weighted Fock-type spaces $\mathcal{F}_W^p$, whose weight $W$ is not necessarily radial. We show that in the spaces $\mathcal{F}_W^p$ which contain the polynomials as a dense subspace (in particular, in the radial case) all nontrivial backward shift invariant subspaces are of the form $\mathcal{P}_n$, i.e., finite dimensional subspaces consisting of polynomials of degree at most $n$. In general, the structure of the nearly invariant subspaces is more complicated. In the case of spaces of slow growth (up to zero exponential type) we establish an analogue of de Branges' Ordering Theorem. We then construct examples which show that the result fails for general Fock-type spaces of larger growth.

Boundedness of the differentiation operator in model spaces and application to Peller type inequalities

Given an inner function $Θ$ in the unit disc $\mathbb{D}$, we study the boundedness of the differentiation operator which acts from from the model subspace $K\_Θ=\left(ΘH^{2}\right)^{\perp}$ of the Hardy space $H^{2},$ equiped with the $BMOA$-norm, to some radial-weighted Bergman space. As an application, we generalize Peller's inequality for Besov norms of rational functions $f$ of degree $n\geq1$ having no poles in the closed unit disc $\overline{\mathbb{D}}$.

Geometry of reproducing kernels in model spaces near the boundary

We study two geometric properties of reproducing kernels in model spaces $K\_θ$where $θ$ is an inner function in the disc: overcompleteness and existence of uniformly minimalsystems of reproducing kernels which do not contain Riesz basic sequences. Both of these properties are related to the notion of the Ahern--Clark point. It is shown that "uniformly minimal non-Riesz"$ $ sequences of reproducing kernelsexist near each Ahern--Clark point which is not an analyticity point for $θ$, whileovercompleteness may occur only near the Ahern--Clark points of infinite orderand is equivalent to a "zero localization property". In this context the notion ofquasi-analyticity appears naturally, and as a by-product of our results we give conditions in thespirit of Ahern--Clark for the restriction of a model space to a radius to be a class ofquasi-analyticity.

Spectral synthesis in de Branges spaces

We solve completely the spectral synthesis problem for reproducing kernels in the de Branges spaces $\mathcal{H}(E)$. Namely, we describe the de Branges spaces $\mathcal{H}(E)$ such that all $M$-bases of reproducing kernels (i.e., complete and minimal systems $\{k_λ\}_{λ\inΛ}$ with complete biorthogonal $\{g_λ\}_{λ\inΛ}$) are strong $M$-bases (i.e., every mixed system $\{k_λ\}_{λ\inΛ\setminus\tilde Λ} \cup\{g_λ\}_{λ\in \tilde Λ}$ is also complete). Surprisingly this property takes place only for two essentially different classes of de Branges spaces: spaces with finite spectral measure and spaces which are isomorphic to Fock-type spaces of entire functions. The first class goes back to de Branges himself, the second class appeared in a recent work of A. Borichev and Yu. Lyubarskii. Moreover, we are able to give a complete characterisation of this second class in terms of the spectral data for $\mathcal{H}(E)$. In addition, we obtain some results about possible codimension of mixed systems for a fixed de Branges space $\mathcal{H}(E)$, and prove that any minimal system of reproducing kernels in $\mathcal{H}(E)$ is contained in an exact system of reproducing kernels.

Localization of zeros for Cauchy transforms

We study the localization of zeros of Cauchy transforms of discrete measures on the real line. This question is motivated by the theory of canonical systems of differential equations. In particular, we prove that the spaces of Cauchy transforms having the localization property are in one-to-one correspondence with the canonical systems of special type, namely, those whose Hamiltonians consist only of indivisible intervals accumulating on the left. Various aspects of the localization phenomena are studied in details. Connections with the density of polynomials and other topics in analysis are discussed.

Sampling, interpolation and Riesz bases in small Fock spaces

We give a complete description of Riesz bases of reproducing kernels in small Fock spaces. This characterization is in the spirit of the well known Kadets--Ingham 1/4 theorem for Paley--Wiener spaces. Contrarily to the situation in Paley--Wiener spaces, a link can be established between Riesz bases in the Hilbert case and corresponding complete interpolating sequences in small Fock spaces with associated uniform norm. These results allow to show that if a sequence has a density stricly different from the critical one then either it can be completed or reduced to a complete interpolating sequence. In particular, this allows to give necessary and sufficient conditions for interpolation or sampling in terms of densities.

A model space approach to some classical inequalities for rational functions

We consider the set \mathcal{R}_{n} of rational functions of degree at most n\geq1 with no poles on the unit circle \mathbb{T} and its subclass \mathcal{R}_{n,\, r} consisting of rational functions without poles in the annulus \left\{ξ:\; r\leq|ξ|\leq\frac{1}{r}\right\}. We discuss an approach based on the model space theory which brings some integral representations for functions in \mathcal{R}_{n} and their derivatives. Using this approach we obtain L^{p}-analogs of several classical inequalities for rational functions including the inequalities by P. Borwein and T. Erdélyi, the Spijker Lemma and S.M. Nikolskii's inequalities. These inequalities are shown to be asymptotically sharp as n tends to infinity and the poles of the rational functions approach the unit circle \mathbb{T}.

Subspaces of $C^\infty$ invariant under the differentiation

Let $L$ be a proper differentiation invariant subspace of $C^\infty(a,b)$ such that the restriction operator $\frac{d}{dx}\bigl{|}_L$ has a discrete spectrum $Λ$ (counting with multiplicities). We prove that $L$ is spanned by functions vanishing outside some closed interval $I\subset(a,b)$ and monomial exponentials $x^ke^{λx}$ corresponding to $Λ$ if its density does not exceed the critical value $\frac{|I|}{2π}$, and moreover, we show that the result is not necessarily true when the density of $Λ$ equals the critical value. This answers a question posed by the first author and B. Korenblum. Finally, if the residual part of $L$ is trivial, then $L$ is spanned by the monomial exponentials it contains.

A Bernstein-type inequality for rational functions in weighted Bergman spaces

Given $n\geq1$ and $r\in[0, 1),$ we consider the set $\mathcal{R}_{n, r}$ of rational functions having at most $n$ poles all outside of $\frac{1}{r}\mathbb{D},$ were $\mathbb{D}$ is the unit disc of the complex plane. We give an asymptotically sharp Bernstein-type inequality for functions in $\mathcal{R}_{n, r}\:$ (as n tends to infinity and r tends to 1-) in weighted Bergman spaces with "polynomially" decreasing weights. We also prove that this result can not be extended to weighted Bergman spaces with "super-polynomially" decreasing weights.

De Branges' theorem on approximation problems of Bernstein type

The Bernstein approximation problem is to determine whether or not the space of all polynomials is dense in a given weighted $C_0$-space on the real line. A theorem of L. de Branges characterizes non--density by existence of an entire function of Krein class being related with the weight in a certain way. An analogous result holds true for weighted sup--norm approximation by entire functions of exponential type at most $τ$ and bounded on the real axis ($τ>0$ fixed). We consider approximation in weighted $C_0$-spaces by functions belonging to a prescribed subspace of entire functions which is solely assumed to be invariant under division of zeros and passing from $F(z)$ to $\bar{F(\bar z)}$, and establish the precise analogue of de Branges' theorem. For the proof we follow the lines of de Branges' original proof, and employ some results of L. Pitt.

Hereditary completeness for systems of exponentials and reproducing kernels

We solve the spectral synthesis problem for exponential systems on an interval. Namely, we prove that any complete and minimal system of exponentials $\{e^{iλ_n t}\}$ in $L^2(-a,a)$ is hereditarily complete up to a one-dimensional defect. This means that there is at most one (up to a constant factor) function $f$ which is orthogonal to all the summands in its formal Fourier series $\sum_n (f,\tilde e_n) e^{iλ_n t}$, where $\{\tilde e_n\}$ is the system biorthogonal to $\{e^{iλ_n t}\}$. However, this one-dimensional defect is possible and, thus, there exist nonhereditarily complete exponential systems. Analogous results are obtained for systems of reproducing kernels in de Branges spaces. For a wide class of de Branges spaces we construct nonhereditarily complete systems of reproducing kernels, thus answering a question posed by N. Nikolski.

Recent developments in spectral synthesis for exponential systems and for non-self-adjoint operators

We survey recent results concerning the hereditary completeness of some special systems of functions and the spectral synthesis problem for a related class of linear operators. We present a solution of the spectral synthesis problem for systems of exponentials in $L^2(-π, π)$. Analogous results are obtained for the systems of reproducing kernels in the de Branges spaces of entire functions. We also apply these results (via a functional model) to the spectral theory of rank one perturbations of compact self-adjoint operators.

Systems of reproducing kernels and their biorthogonal: completeness or incompleteness?

Let $\{v_n\}$ be a complete minimal system in a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ and let $\{w_m\}$ be its biorthogonal system. It is well known that $\{w_m\}$ is not necessarily complete. However the situation may change if we consider systems of reproducing kernels in a reproducing kernel Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ of analytic functions. We study the completeness problem for a class of spaces with a Riesz basis of reproducing kernels and for model subspaces $K_Θ$ of the Hardy space. We find a class of spaces where systems biorthogonal to complete systems of reproducing kernels are always complete, and show that in general this is not true. In particular we answer the question posed by N.K. Nikolski and construct a model subspace with a non-complete biorthogonal system.

Symbols of truncated Toeplitz operators

We consider three problems connected with coinvariant subspaces of the backward shift operator in Hardy spaces $H^p$: 1) properties of truncated Toeplitz operators; 2) Carleson-type embedding theorems for the coinvariant subspaces; 3) factorizations of pseudocontinuable functions from $H^1$. These problems turn out to be closely connected and even, in a sense, equivalent. The new approach based on the factorizations allows us to answer a number of challenging questions about truncated Toeplitz operators posed by Donald Sarason.

Majorization in de Branges spaces I. Representability of subspaces

In this series of papers we study subspaces of de Branges spaces of entire functions which are generated by majorization on subsets $D$ of the closed upper half-plane. The present, first, part is addressed to the question which subspaces of a given de Branges space can be represented by means of majorization. Results depend on the set $D$ where majorization is permitted. Significantly different situations are encountered when $D$ is close to the real axis or accumulates to $i\infty$.

Majorization in de Branges spaces II. Banach spaces generated by majorants

This is the second part in a series dealing with subspaces of de Branges spaces of entire function generated by majorization on subsets of the closed upper half-plane. In this part we investigate certain Banach spaces generated by admissible majorants. We study their interplay with the original de Branges space structure, and their geometry. In particular, we will show that, generically, they will be nonreflexive and nonseparable.

The Feichtinger conjecture for reproducing kernels in model subspaces

We obtain two results concerning the Feichtinger conjecture for systems of normalized reproducing kernels in the model subspace $K_Θ= H^2\ominus ΘH^2$ of the Hardy space $H^2$, where $Θ$ is an inner function. First, we verify the Feichtinger conjecture for the kernels $ \tilde k_{λ_n} = k_{λ_n}/\|k_{λ_n}\|$ under the assumption that $\sup_n |Θ(λ_n)|<1$. Secondly, we prove the Feichtinger conjecture in the case where $Θ$ is a one-component inner function, meaning that the set $\{z:|Θ(z)|<\varepsilon\}$ is connected for some $\varepsilon\in(0,1)$.

Majorants of meromorphic functions with fixed poles

Let $B$ be a meromorphic Blaschke product in the upper half-plane with zeros $z_n$ and let $K_B=H^2\ominus BH^2$ be the associated model subspace of the Hardy class. In other words, $K_B$ is the space of square summable meromorphic functions with the poles at the points $\bar z_n$. A nonnegative function $w$ on the real line is said to be an admissible majorant for $K_B$ if there is a non-zero function $f\in K_B$ such that $|f|\le w$ a.e. on $\mathbb{R}$. We study the relations between the distribution of the zeros of a Blaschke product $B$ and the class of admissible majorants for the space $K_B$.
