Electroweak phase transition triggered by fermion sector

To realize first-order electroweak phase transition, it is necessary to generate a barrier in the thermal Higgs potential, which is usually triggered by scalar degree of freedom. We instead investigate phase transition patterns in pure fermion extensions of the standard model, and find that additional fermions with mass hierarchy and mixing could develop such barrier and realize strongly first-order phase transition in such models. In the Higgs potential with polynomial parametrization, the barrier can be generated in the following two patterns: (I) positive quadratic term, negative cubic term and positive quartic term or (II) positive quadratic term, negative quartic term and positive higher dimensional term, such as dimensional 6 operator.

A New Observable for Measuring CP Property of Top-Higgs Interaction

We propose a new dihedral angle observable to measure the CP property of the interaction of top quark and Higgs boson in the $t\bar{t}H$ production at the 14~TeV LHC. We consider two decay modes of the Higgs boson, $H\to b\bar{b}$ and $H\to γγ$ and show that the dihedral angle distribution is able to distinguish the CP-even and the CP-odd hypothesis at 95\% confidence level with an integrated luminosity of $\sim 180~{\rm fb}^{-1}$.

Probing $Zt\bar{t}$ couplings using $Z$ boson polarization in $ZZ$ production at hadron colliders

We propose to utilize the polarization information of the $Z$ bosons in $ZZ$ production, via the gluon-gluon fusion process $gg\to ZZ$, to probe the $Zt\bar{t}$ gauge coupling. The contribution of longitudinally polarized $Z$ bosons is sensitive to the axial-vector component ($a_t$) of the $Zt\bar{t}$ coupling. We demonstrate that the angular distribution of the charged lepton from $Z$ boson decays serves well for measuring the polarization of $Z$ bosons and the determination of $a_t$. We show that $ZZ$ production via the $gg\to ZZ$ process complement to $Zt\bar{t}$ and $tZj$ productions in measuring the $Zt\bar{t}$ coupling at hadron colliders.

Collider Phenomenology of the 3-3-1 Model

We study collider phenomenology of the so-called 331 model with $SU(3)_C\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ gauge structure at the large hadron collider, including single and double Higgs boson productions, Higgs boson rare decay, $Z^\prime$ boson production, new charged gauge boson pair production, and heavy quark pair production. We discuss all the possible collider signatures of new particle productions. Four benchmark 331 models, $β=\pm \sqrt{3}$ and $β=\pm 1/\sqrt{3}$, are studied in this work.

One Bump or Two Peaks? The 750 GeV Diphoton Excess and Dark Matter with a Complex Mediator

We consider the possibility that the recently observed excess in the diphoton invariant mass spectrum around 750 GeV is due to two narrow scalars. We demonstrate that there is no need to introduce invisible decay modes to enlarge the widths as long as the two scalars exhibit an appropriate mass splitting. Nevertheless we investigate the possible connection of these two scalars to the dark matter in a toy model with a Majorana fermionic dark matter candidate. We explore how large the widths of the two scalar widths could be taking into account various constraints from collider and dark matter experiments. Introducing two scalars alleviates the tension between the diphoton production and dark matter constraints.

Probing dark particles indirectly at the CEPC

When dark matter candidate and its parent particles are nearly degenerate, it would be difficult to probe them at the Large Hadron Collider directly. We propose to explore their quantum loop effects at the CEPC through the golden channel process $e^+e^-\to μ^+μ^-$. We use a renormalizable toy model consisting of a new scalar and a fermion to describe new physics beyond the Standard Model. The new scalar and fermion are general multiplets of the $SU(2)_L\times U(1)_Y$ symmetry, and couple to the muon lepton through Yukawa interaction. We calculate their loop contributions to anomalous $γμ^+μ^-$ and $Zμ^+μ^-$ couplings which can be applied to many new physics models. The prospects of their effects at the CEPC are also examined assuming a 0.002 accuracy in the cross section measurement.

The Diphoton Excess, Low Energy Theorem and the 331 Model

We interpret the diphoton anomaly as a heavy scalar $H_3$ in the so-called 331 model. The scalar is responsible for breaking the $SU(3)_C\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$ gauge symmetry down to the standard model electroweak gauge group. It mainly couples to the standard model gluons and photons through quantum loops involving heavy quarks and leptons. Those quarks and leptons, in together with the SM quarks and leptons, form the fundamental representation of the 331 model. We use low energy theorem to calculate effective coupling of $H_3gg$, $H_3γγ$, $H_3ZZ$, $H_3WW$ and $H_3Zγ$. The analytical results can be applied to new physics models satisfying the low energy theorem. We show that the heavy quark and lepton contribution cannot produce enough diphoton pairs. It is crucial to include the contribution of charged scalars to explain the diphoton excess. The extra neutral $Z^\prime$ boson could also explain the 2 TeV diboson excess observed at the LHC Run-I.

Determining $V_{tb}$ at Electron-Positron Colliders

Verifying $V_{tb} \simeq 1$ is critical to test the three generation assumption of the Standard Model. So far our best knowledge of $V_{tb}$ is inferred either from the $3\times 3$ unitarity of CKM matrix or from single top-quark productions upon the assumption of universal weak couplings. The unitarity could be relaxed in new physics models with extra heavy quarks and the universality of weak couplings could also be broken if the $Wtb$ coupling is modified in new physics models. In this work we propose to measure $V_{tb}$ in the process of $e^+ e^- \to t\bar{t}$ without prior knowledge of the number of fermion generations or the strength of the $Wtb$ coupling. Using an effective Lagrangian approach, we perform a model-independent analysis of the interactions among electroweak gauge bosons and the third generation quarks, i.e. the $Wtb$, $Zt\bar{t}$ and $Zb\bar{b}$ couplings. The electroweak symmetry of the Standard Model specifies a pattern of deviations of the $Z$-$t_L$-$t_L$ and $W$-$t_L$-$b_L$ couplings after one imposes the known experimental constraint on the $Z$-$b_L$-$b_L$ coupling. We demonstrate that, making use of the predicted pattern and the accurate measurements of top-quark mass and width from the energy threshold scan experiments, one can determine $V_{tb}$ from the cross section and the forward-backward asymmetry of top-quark pair production at an {\it unpolarized} electron-positron collider.

Probing $HZγ$ and $Hγγ$ anomalous couplings in the process of $e^+e^- \to Hγ$

Rare decay of the Higgs boson is a powerful tool to probe new physics beyond the standard model. The rare decays occur through quantum loops in which the standard model and new physics contributions might cancel each other out. We consider a faked-no-new-physics scenario that the new physics contributions are about minus two times the standard model contribution such that partial widths of Higgs boson rare decays are the same as the standard model predictions. We propose to measure the $HZγ$ and $Hγγ$ anomalous couplings in the process of $e^+ e^- \to Hγ$ that is strongly correlated to Higgs boson rare decays. We show that the faked-no-new-physics scenario can be fully probed at a high energy electron-positron collider.

Probing $HZγ$ and $Hγγ$ Anomalous Couplings in the Process of $e^+e^- \to Hγ$

We propose to measure the $HZγ$ and $Hγγ$ anomalous couplings in the process of $e^{+}e^{-}\rightarrow Hγ$ with the sequential decay of $H\to b{\bar b}$. The discovery potential of observing the anomalous couplings are explored in details. Our study shows that the electron-positron collider has a great potential of testing the $HZγ$ and $Hγγ$ couplings. Conservative bounds on the two anomalous couplings are also derived when no new physics signal were detected on top of the SM backgrounds.

Resolving the Degeneracy in Single Higgs Production with Higgs Pair Production

The Higgs boson production can be affected by several anomalous couplings, e.g. $c_t$ and $c_g$ anomalous couplings. Precise measurement of $gg\to h$ production yields two degenerate parameter spaces of $c_t$ and $c_g$; one parameter space exhibits the SM limit while the other does not. Such a degeneracy could be resolved by Higgs boson pair production. In this work we adapt the strategy suggested by the ATLAS collaboration to explore the potential of distinguishing the degeneracy at the 14 TeV LHC. If the $c_t$ anomalous coupling is induced only by the operator $H^†H \bar Q_L \tilde{H} t_R$, then the non-SM-like band could be excluded with an integrated luminosity of $\sim 235~{\rm fb}^{-1}$. Making use of the fact that the Higgs boson pair is mainly produced through an $s$-wave scattering, we propose an analytical function to describe the fraction of signal events surviving a series of experimental cuts for a given invariant mass of Higgs boson pair. The function is model independent and can be applied to estimate the discovery potential of various NP models.

Simple non-Abelian extensions of the standard model gauge group and the diboson excesses at the LHC

The ATLAS collaboration reported excesses at around 2 TeV in the di-boson production decaying into hadronic final states. We consider the possibility of explaining the excesses with extra gauge bosons in two simple non-Abelian extensions of the Standard Model. One is the so-called $G(221)$ models with a symmetry structure of $SU(2)_1\otimes SU(2)_2\otimes U(1)_X$ and the other is the $G(331)$ models with an extended symmetry of $SU(3)_C\otimes SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X$. The $W'$ and $Z'$ bosons emerge after the electroweak symmetry is spontaneously broken. Two patterns of symmetry breaking in the $G(221)$ models are considered in this work: one is $SU(2)_L\otimes SU(2)_2 \otimes U(1)_X \to SU(2)_L\otimes U(1)_Y$, the other is $SU(2)_1\otimes SU(2)_2 \otimes U(1)_Y \to SU(2)_L\otimes U(1)_Y$. The symmetry breaking of the $G(331)$ model is $SU(3)_L\otimes U(1)_X \to SU(2)_L \otimes U(1)_Y$. We perform a global analysis of $W^\prime$ and $Z^\prime$ phenomenology in ten new physics models, including all the channels of $W^\prime/Z^\prime$ decay. Our study shows that the leptonic mode and the dijet mode of $W^\prime/Z^\prime$ decays impose a very stringent bound on the parameter space in several new physics models. Such tight bounds provide a useful guide for building new physics models to address on the diboson anomalies. We also note that the Left-Right and Lepton-Phobic models can explain the $3.4σ$ $WZ$ excess if the $2.6σ$ deviation in the $W^+W^-$ pair around 2~TeV were confirmed to be a fluctuation of the SM backgrounds.

Testing LHT at the LHC Run-II

We study the Littlest Higgs model with T-parity (LHT) in the process of $pp \to W_H^+W_H^- \to W^+W^- A_H A_H$ at the 14 TeV LHC. With the $W$-jet tagging technique, we demonstrate that the bulk of the model parameter space can be probed at the level of more than $5σ$ in the signature of two fat $W$-jets plus large missing energy. Furthermore, we propose a novel strategy of measuring the principle parameter $f$ that is crucial to testify the LHT model and to fix mass spectrum, including dark matter particle. Our proposal can be easily incorporated into current experimental program of diboson searches at the LHC Run-II.

Interpretations and Implications of the Top Quark Rapidity Asymmetries $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^{\ell}$

Forward-backward asymmetries $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^\ell$ are observed in the top quark $t$ rapidity distribution and in the rapidity distribution of charged leptons $\ell$ from top quark decay at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider, and a charge asymmetry $A_C$ is seen in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In this paper, we update our previous studies of the Tevatron asymmetries using the most recent data. We provide expectations for $A_C$ at the LHC based first on model independent extrapolations from the Tevatron, and second based on new physics models that can explain the Tevatron asymmetries. We examine the relationship of the two asymmetries $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^\ell$. We show their connection through the $(V-A)$ spin correlation between the charged lepton and the top quark with different polarization states. We show that the ratio of the two asymmetries provides independent insight into new physics models that are invoked to fit the top quark asymmetry. We emphasize the value of the measurement of both asymmetries, and we conclude that a model which produces more right-handed than left-handed top quarks is favored by the present Tevatron data.

Measuring Top-Quark Polarization in Top-Pair + Missing Energy Events

The polarization of a top-quark can be sensitive to new physics beyond the standard model. We propose a novel method to measure top-quark polarization, based on the charged lepton energy fraction in top-quark decay, and illustrate the method with a detailed simulation of top-quark pairs produced in supersymmetric top squark pair production. We show that the lepton energy ratio distribution that we define is very sensitive to the top-quark polarization but insensitive to the precise measurement of the top-quark energy.

Searching for Charged Higgs Boson in Polarized Top Quark

The charged Higgs boson is quite common in many new physics models. In this study we examine the potential of observing a heavy charged Higgs boson in its decay mode of top-quark and bottom-quark in the Type-II Two-Higgs-Doublet-Model. In this model, the chirality structure of the coupling of charged Higgs boson to the top- and bottom-quark is very sensitive to the value of $\tanβ$. As the polarization of the top-quark can be measured experimentally from the top-quark decay products, one could make use of the top-quark polarization to determine the value of $\tanβ$. We preform a detailed analysis of measuring top-quark polarization in the production channels $gb\to tH^-$ and $g\bar{b}\to \bar{t}H^+$. We calculate the helicity amplitudes of the charged Higgs boson production and decay. Our calculation shows that the top-quark from the charged Higgs boson decay provides a good probe for measuring $\tanβ$, especially for the intermediate $\tanβ$ region. On the contrary, the top-quark produced in association with the charged Higgs boson cannot be used to measure $\tanβ$ because its polarization is highly contaminated by the $t$-channel kinematics.

Discovery and Identification of W' and Z' in SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) Models at the LHC

We explore the discovery potential of W' and Z' boson searches for various SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) models at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), after taking into account the constraints from low energy precision measurements and direct searches at both the Tevatron (1.96 TeV) and the LHC (7 TeV). In such models, the W' and Z' bosons emerge after the electroweak symmetry is spontaneously broken. Two patterns of the symmetry breaking are considered in this work: one is SU(2)_L x SU(2)_2 x U(1)_X to SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y (BP-I), another is SU(2)_1 x SU(2)_2 x U(1)_Y to SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y (BP-II). Examining the single production channel of W' and Z' with their subsequent leptonic decays, we find that the probability of detecting W' and Z' bosons in the considered models at the LHC (with 14 TeV) is highly limited by the low energy precision data constraints. We show that observing Z' alone, without seeing a W', does not rule out new physics models with non-Abelian gauge extension, such as the phobic models in BP-I. Models in BP-II would predict the discovery of degenerate W' and Z' bosons at the LHC.

Measuring Top Quark Polarization in Top Pair plus Missing Energy Events

The polarization of a top quark can be sensitive to new physics beyond the standard model. Since the charged lepton from top quark decay is maximally correlated with the top quark spin, it is common to measure the polarization from the distribution in the angle between the charged lepton and the top quark directions. We propose a novel method based on the charged lepton energy fraction and illustrate the method with a detailed simulation of top quark pairs produced in supersymmetric top squark pair production. We show that the lepton energy ratio distribution that we define is very sensitive to the top quark polarization but insensitive to the precise measurement of the top quark energy.

The Top Quark Production Asymmetries $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^{\ell}$

A large forward-backward asymmetry is seen in both the top quark rapidity distribution $A_{FB}^t$ and in the rapidity distribution of charged leptons $A_{FB}^\ell$ from top quarks produced at the Tevatron. We study the kinematic and dynamic aspects of the relationship of the two observables arising from the spin correlation between the charged lepton and the top quark with different polarization states. We emphasize the value of both measurements, and we conclude that a new physics model which produces more right-handed than left-handed top quarks is favored by the present data.

Calculation of Associated Production of a Top Quark and a W' at the LHC

We investigate collider signatures of a top-philic W' model, in which the W' boson couples only to the third-generation quarks of the standard model. The main discovery channel for this W' is through associated production of the W' and top quark, yielding a top-quark pair plus an extra bottom quark jet as a signal. We do a full simulation of the signal and relevant backgrounds. We develop a method of analysis that allows us to conclude that discovery of the W' is promising at the LHC despite large standard model backgrounds. Bottom quark tagging of the extra jet is key to suppressing the backgrounds.

Dynamical Origin of the Correlation between the Asymmetries $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^{\ell}$

A larger than expected forward-backward asymmetry in rapidity is observed in top quark pairs produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron. The asymmetry is seen in both the top quark distribution $A_{FB}^t$ and in the distribution of charged leptons $A_{FB}^\ell$ from top quark decay. In this paper, we study the kinematic and dynamic aspects of the tight relationship of the two observables arising from the spin correlation between the charged lepton and the top quark with different polarization states. We also consider two benchmark new physics models, an axigluon model and a flavor-changing $W^\prime$ model. These models could explain the values of both $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^\ell$. We emphasize the value of both measurements, and we conclude that a model which produces more right-handed than left-handed top quarks is favored by the present data.

Effective Dark Matter Model: Relic density, CDMS II, Fermi LAT and LHC

The Cryogenic Dark Matter Search recently announced the observation of two signal events with a 77% confidence level. Although statistically inconclusive, it is nevertheless suggestive. In this work we present a model-independent analysis on the implication of a positive signal in dark matter scattering off nuclei. Assuming the interaction between (scalar, fermion or vector) dark matter and the standard model induced by unknown new physics at the scale $Λ$, we examine various dimension-6 tree-level induced operators and constrain them using the current experimental data, e.g. the WMAP data of the relic abundance, CDMS II direct detection of the spin-independent scattering, and indirect detection data (Fermi LAT cosmic gamma-ray), etc. Finally, the LHC reach is also explored.

Improved Predictions for Higgs Q_T at the Tevatron and the LHC

The search for the Higgs boson at the Tevatron and the LHC relies on detailed calculations of the kinematics of Higgs boson production and decay. In this paper, we improve the calculation of the distribution in transverse momentum, $Q_T$, of the Higgs boson in the gluon fusion production process, $gg\to H$, by matching the resummed distribution at small $Q_T$ with the ${\cal O}(α_{s}^4)$ fixed-order perturbative calculation at high $Q_T$ in the ResBos Monte Carlo program. The distribution is higher at large $Q_T$ than with the old ${\cal O}(α_{s}^3)$ fixed-order perturbative calculation, and the matching with the resummed calculation is much smoother. The total cross section is also increased, more in line with next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations. We also study the effect of the new calculation on the distribution of $Δϕ_{\ell\ell}$ in the overall process $gg\to H\to W^{+} W^{-}\to\ell^{+}\ell^{-}ν\barν$, and the effect of PDF uncertainties on the distributions at the Tevatron and the LHC.

Nonzero Theta13 for Neutrino Mixing in a Supersymmetric B-L Gauge Model with T_7 Lepton Flavor Symmetry

We discuss how θ_{13} \neq 0 is accommodated in a recently proposed renormalizable model of neutrino mixing using the non-Abelian discrete symmetry T_7 in the context of a supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model with gauged U(1)_{B-L}. We predict a correlation between θ_{13} and θ_{23}, as well as the effective neutrino mass m_{ee} in neutrinoless double beta decay.

Observable T_7 Lepton Flavor Symmetry at the Large Hadron Collider

More often than not, models of flavor symmetry rely on the use of nonrenormalizable operators (in the guise of flavons) to accomplish the phenomenologically successful tribimaximal mixing of neutrinos. We show instead how a simple renormalizable two-parameter neutrino mass model of tribimaximal mixing can be constructed with the non-Abelian discrete symmetry T_7 and the gauging of B-L. This is also achieved without the addition of auxiliary symmetries and particles present in almost all other proposals. Most importantly, it is verifiable at the Large Hadron Collider.

Probing Lepton Flavor Triality with Higgs Boson Decay

If neutrino tribimaximal mixing is explained by a non-Abelian discrete symmetry such as $A_4$, $T_7$, $Δ(27)$, etc., the charged-lepton Higgs sector has a $Z_3$ residual symmetry (lepton flavor triality), which may be observed directly in the decay chain $H^0 \to ψ_2^0 \barψ_2^0$, then $ψ_2^0 (\barψ_2^0) \to l_i^+ l_j^- ~(i \neq j)$, where $H^0$ is a standard-model-like Higgs boson and $ψ_2^0$ is a scalar particle needed for realizing the original discrete symmetry. Top Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry and Same-Sign Top Quark Pairs

The top quark forward-backward asymmetry measured at the Tevatron collider shows a large deviation from standard model expectations. Among possible interpretations, a non-universal $Z^\prime$ model is of particular interest as it naturally predicts a top quark in the forward region of large rapidity. To reproduce the size of the asymmetry, the couplings of the $Z^\prime$ to standard model quarks must be large, inevitably leading to copious production of same-sign top quark pairs at the energies of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We explore the discovery potential for $tt$ and $ttj$ production in early LHC experiments at 7-8 TeV and conclude that if {\it no} $tt$ signal is observed with 1 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, then a non-universal $Z^\prime$ alone cannot explain the Tevatron forward-backward asymmetry.

Top Quark Polarization As A Probe of Models with Extra Gauge Bosons

New heavy gauge bosons exist in many models of new physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. Discovery of these W^\prime and Z^\prime resonances and the establishment of their spins, couplings, and other quantum numbers would shed light on the gauge structure of the new physics. The measurement of the polarization of the SM fermions from the gauge boson decays would decipher the handedness of the coupling of the new states, an important relic of the primordial new physics symmetry. Since the top quark decays promptly, its decay preserves spin information. We show how decays of new gauge bosons into third generation fermions (W^\prime \to tb, Z^\prime\to t\bar{t}) can be used to determine the handedness of the couplings of the new states and to discriminate among various new physics models.

W plus two jets from a quasi-inert Higgs doublet

We show that, the result recently reported by the CDF collaboration showing an excess in the invariant mass distribution of jet pairs produced in association with a W-boson can be explained by a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM) with an additional quasi-inert Higgs doublet. The two additional neutral Higgs states H^0 and A^0 have a mass of about 150 GeV and decay into a pair of jets. W^\pm H^0/A^0 pairs are produced from the decay of the heavier charged Higgs boson H^\pm. Depending on the precise masses of the neutral and charged Higgs bosons, the model is shown to be in agreement with constraints from electroweak precision tests and from flavor physics for a broad range of the Standard Model-like Higgs mass from 100 GeV to several hundreds of GeV. Other possible signals of this model at the Tevatron and the LHC are discussed.

Forward-Backward Asymmetry of Top Quark Pair Production

We adopt a Markov Chain Monte Carlo method to examine various new physics models which can generate the forward-backward asymmetry in top quark pair production observed at the Tevatron by the CDF Collaboration. We study the following new physics models: (1) exotic gluon $G^\prime$, (2) extra $Z^\prime$ boson with flavor-conserving interaction, (3) extra $Z^\prime$ with flavor-violating $u$-$t$-$Z^\prime$ interaction, (4) extra $W^\prime$ with flavor-violating $d$-$t$-$W^\prime$ interaction, and (5) extra scalars $S$ and $S^\pm$ with flavor-violating $u$-$t$-$S$ and $d$-$t$-$S^\pm$ interactions. After combining the forward-backward asymmetry with the measurement of the top pair production cross section and the $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass distribution at the Tevatron, we find that an axial vector exotic gluon $G^\prime$ of mass about $1 {\rm TeV}$ or $2 {\rm TeV}$ or a $W^\prime$ of mass about $2 {\rm TeV}$ offer an improvement over the Standard Model. The other models considered do not fit the data significantly better than the Standard Model. We also emphasize a few points which have been long ignored in the literature for new physics searches: (1) heavy resonance width effects, (2) renormalization scale dependence, and (3) NLO corrections to the $t\bar{t}$ invariant mass spectrum. We argue that these three effects are crucial to test or exclude new physics effects in the top quark pair asymmetry.

From Pamela to CDMS and Back

We take the recent result from the CDMS collaboration as a hint that the dark matter has an elastic scattering cross section with the nucleon in the vicinity of 10^-7 pb. By crossing symmetry such a cross section implies annihilation of dark matter into hadrons inside the halo, resulting in an anti-proton flux that could be constrained by data from the PAMELA collaboration if one includes a large boost factor necessary to explain the PAMELA excess in the positron fraction. As an illustration, we present a model-independent analysis for a fermionic dark matter and study the upper bound on the boost factor using the PAMELA anti-proton flux.

Higgs Boson Search Sensitivity in the $H \to WW$ Dilepton Decay Mode at $\sqrt s = 7$ and 10 TeV

Prospects for discovery of the standard model Higgs boson are examined at center of mass energies of $7$ and $10$ TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We perform a simulation of the signal and principal backgrounds for Higgs boson production and decay in the $W^+ W^-$ dilepton mode, finding good agreement with the ATLAS and CMS collaboration estimates of signal significance at 14 TeV for Higgs boson masses near $m_H = 160$~GeV. At the lower energy of $7$~TeV, using the same analysis cuts as these collaborations, we compute expected signal sensitivities of about $2$ standard deviations ($σ$'s) at $m_H = 160$~GeV in the ATLAS case, and about 3.6~$σ$ in the CMS case for $1$~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Integrated luminosities of 8~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ and 3~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ are needed in the ATLAS case at $7$ and $10$~TeV, respectively, for $5~σ$ level discovery. In the CMS case, the numbers are 2~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ and 1~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ at $7$ and $10$~TeV. Our different stated expectations for the two experiments arise from the more restrictive analysis cuts in the CMS case. Recast as exclusion limits, our results show that with $1~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at 7~TeV, the LHC may be able to exclude $m_H$ values in the range 160 to 180~GeV provided no signal is seen.

Next-to-Leading Order Cross Sections for New Heavy Fermion Production at Hadron Colliders

In addition to the operator originated from the Higgs mechanism, two dimension-five operators, one CP-even and one CP-odd, are generated only at the loop-level. Simple formulas are derived for the differential decay distributions when the Z pair subsequently decay into four leptons by computing the helicity amplitudes, from which it is shown the CP-odd operator merely induces a phase shift in the azimuthal angular distribution between the two decay planes of the Z bosons. We also investigate new physics scenarios giving rise to loop-induced decays of a scalar into ZZ pair, and argue that the total decay width of such a scalar would be order-of-magnitude smaller than that of a Higgs boson, should such decays be observed in the early running of the LHC. Therefore, the total decay width alone is a strong indicator of the Higgs nature, or the lack thereof, of a scalar resonance in ZZ final states. In addition, we study the possibility of using the azimuthal angular distribution to disentangle effects among all three operators.

A Dark Matter Model with Non-Abelian Gauge Symmetry

We propose a dark matter model in which the dark sector is gauged under a new SU(2) group. The dark sector consists of SU(2) dark gauge fields, two triplet dark Higgs fields, and two dark fermion doublets (dark matter candidates in this model). The dark sector interacts with the SM sector through kinetic and mass mixing operators. The model explains both PAMELA and Fermi LAT data very well and also satisfies constraints from both the DM relic density and Standard Model precision observables. The phenomenology of the model at the LHC is also explored.

Probing the CP nature of Higgs boson through e^-e^+ --> e^-e^+ phi

We study the production of Higgs boson (phi) via the e^{-}e^{+}--> e^{-}e^{+} phi process at a future International Linear Collider (ILC) with sqrt{S}=1 TeV. At this energy the ZZ-fusion rate, as predicted by the Standard Model, dominates over the associated ZH production rate. Here, we consider a class of theory models based on the effective phi-VV (with V=Z, gamma) couplings generated by dimension-6 operators. We also show how to use the kinematical distributions of the final state leptons to discriminate the CP-even and CP-odd Higgs bosons produced at the ILC, when the phi-gamma-gamma coupling dominates the Higgs boson production rate.

Next-to-Leading Order Corrections to Single Top Quark Production and Decay at the Tevatron: 1. s-channel Process

We present a study of s-channel single top quark production at the upgraded Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ collider, including the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the production and the decay of the top quark. The "modified" narrow width approximation was adopted to preserve the spin of the top quark in its production and decay. We discuss the effect of the different $O(α_s)$ contributions on the inclusive cross section as well as various kinematic distributions after imposing the relevant cuts to select s-channel single top signal events. In particular the $O(α_s)$ decay contribution, while small in size, has a significant impact on several distributions. With the help of the best-jet algorithm to reconstruct the top quark we demonstrate that it is possible to study kinematical and spin correlations in s-channel single top events. We furthermore compare top quark spin measurements in two different basis and show how NLO corrections have to be taken into consideration in searches for the Higgs boson through $W^{\pm}H$ associated production at the Tevatron.

Next-to-Leading Order Corrections to Single Top Quark Production and Decay at the Tevatron: 2. $t$-channel Process

We present a study of the $t$-channel mode of single top quark production at the upgraded Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ collider, including the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the production and the decay of a single top quark. The narrow width approximation was adopted in order to preserve the spin of the top quark in its production and decay. We discuss the effects of different $O(α_s)$ contributions on the inclusive cross section as well as various kinematic distributions after imposing the relevant cuts to select $t$-channel single top signal events.

Combined Effect of QCD Resummation and QED Radiative Correction to W boson Observables at the Tevatron

A precise determination of the W boson mass at the Fermilab Tevatron requires a theoretical calculation in which the effects of the initial-state multiple soft-gluon emission and the final-state photonic correction are simultaneously included . Here, we present such a calculation and discuss its prediction on the transverse mass distribution of the W boson and the transverse momentum distribution of its decay charged lepton, which are the most relevant observables for measuring the W boson mass at hadron colliders.
