Direct Detection and LHC constraints on a $t$-Channel Simplified Model of Majorana Dark Matter at One Loop

An interesting class of models posits that the dark matter is a Majorana fermion which interacts with a quark together with a colored scalar mediator. Such a theory can be tested in direct detection experiments, through dark matter scattering with heavy nuclei, and at the LHC, via jets and missing energy signatures. Motivated by the fact that such theories have spin-independent interactions that vanish at tree level, we examine them at one loop (along with RGE improvement to resum large logs), and find that despite its occurrence at a higher order of perturbation theory, the spin-independent scattering searches typically impose the strongest constraints on the model parameter space. We further analyze the corresponding LHC constraints at one loop and find that it is important to take them into account when interpreting the implications of searches for jets plus missing momentum on this class of models, thus providing the corresponding complementary information for this class of models.

Factorization of the forward-backward charge asymmetry and measurements of the weak mixing angle and proton structure at hadron colliders

The forward-backward charge asymmetry (AFB) at hadron colliders is sensitive to both the electroweak (EW) symmetry breaking represented by the effective weak mixing angle, and the proton structure information in the initial state modeled by the parton distribution functions (PDFs). Due to their strong correlation, the precisions of the determination on the weak mixing angle and PDFs using the measured AFB spectrum are limited. In this paper, we define a set of structure parameters which factorize the unique proton information of the relative difference between quarks and antiquarks in the AFB observation. Other than the conventional way of extracting the weak mixing angle fro the convolution of PDF and EW calculations, we propose a new method to simultaneously determine the value of the weak mixing angle and the proton structure terms by fitting to the observed AFB distribution, and point out the necessity of specifying additional observations to further reduce the uncertainties on the proton structure terms respectively, so that the model-independent high precision measurements can be achieved at the future LHC experiments.

General heavy-flavor mass scheme for charged-current DIS at NNLO and beyond

Incompleteness in current knowledge of neutrino interactions with nuclear matter imposes a primary limitation in searches for leptonic CP violation carried out at long-baseline neutrino experiments. In this paper, we present a new computation that elevates the theoretical accuracy to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD for charged-current deeply-inelastic scattering (DIS) processes relevant for ongoing and future neutrino programs. Mass-dependent quark contributions are consistently included across a wide range of momentum transfers in the SACOT-$χ$ general-mass scheme. When appropriate, we further include N$^3$LO corrections in the zero-mass scheme. We show theoretical predictions for several experiments with neutrinos over a wide range of energies and at the upcoming Electron-Ion Collider. Our prediction reduces perturbative uncertainties to $\sim\!1\%$, sufficient for the high-precision objectives of future charged-current DIS measurements, and provides important theoretical inputs to experimental studies of leptonic mixing and CP violations.

Impact of lattice $s(x)-\bar{s}(x)$ data in the CTEQ-TEA global analysis

We study the impact of the lattice data on the determination of the strangeness asymmetry distribution $s_-(x) \equiv s(x) - {\bar s}(x)$ in the general CTEQ-TEA global analysis of parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. Firstly, we find that allowing a non-vanishing $s_-(x)$, at the initial $Q_0=1.3$ GeV scale, in a global PDF analysis leads to the quality of the CT18As fit similar to CT18A. Secondly, including the lattice data in the CT18As\_Lat fit greatly reduces the $s_-$-PDF error band size in the large $x$ region. To further reduce its error would require more precise lattice data, extended to smaller $x$ values.

Jet Charge: A new tool to probe the anomalous $Zb\bar{b}$ couplings at the EIC

We propose to utilize the average jet charge weighted single-spin asymmetry $A_e^{bQ}$ in the neutral current DIS scattering with one $b$-tagged jet produced at the EIC to probe the $Zb\bar{b}$ interactions. This novel observable is sensitive to the axial-vector component of the $Zb\bar{b}$ coupling and is complementary to the single-spin asymmetry measurement at the EIC and the $gg\to Zh$ cross section measurement at the HL-LHC in the determination of the $Zb\bar{b}$ couplings. We show that the apparent degeneracy of the $Zb\bar{b}$ couplings, implied by the LEP and SLC precision electroweak data, can be broken by the $A_e^{bQ}$ measurement at the EIC. With a large enough integrated luminosity collected at the EIC, the measurement of $A_e^{bQ}$ could also resolve the long-standing discrepancy of $A_{\rm FB}^b$ at the LEP, strongly dependent on the $b$-tagging efficiency.

Lattice QCD Calculations of Parton Physics

In this document, we summarize the status and challenges of calculating parton physics in lattice QCD for the US Particle Physics Community Planning Exercise (a.k.a. "Snowmass"). While PDF-moments calculations have been very successful and been continuously improved, new methods have been developed to calculate distributions directly in $x$-space. Many recent lattice studies have been focused on calculating isovector PDFs of the pion and nucleon, learning to control systematics associated with excited-state contamination, renormalization and continuum extrapolations, pion-mass and finite-volume effects, etc. Although in some cases, the lattice results are already competitive with experimental data, to reach the level of precision in a wide range of $x$ for unpolarized nucleon PDFs impactful for future collider physics remains a challenge, and may require exascale supercomputing power. The new theoretical methods open the door for calculating other partonic observables which will be the focus of the experimental program in nuclear physics, including generalized parton distributions and transverse-momentum dependent PDFs. A fruitful interplay between experimental data and lattice-QCD calculations will usher in a new era for parton physics and hadron structure.

NNLO constraints on proton PDFs from the SeaQuest and STAR experiments and other developments in the CTEQ-TEA global analysis

We review progress in the global QCD analysis by the CTEQ-TEA group since the publication of CT18 parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton. Specifically, we discuss comparisons of CT18 NNLO predictions with the LHC 13 TeV measurements as well as with the FNAL SeaQuest and BNL STAR data on lepton pair production. The specialized CT18X PDFs approximating saturation effects are compared with the CT18sx PDFs obtained using NLL/NLO small-$x$ resummation. Short summaries are presented for the special CT18 parton distributions with fitted charm and with lattice QCD inputs. A recent comparative analysis of the impact of deuteron nuclear effects on the parton distributions by the CTEQ-JLab and CTEQ-TEA groups is summarized.

Probing the $Zb\bar{b}$ anomalous couplings via exclusive $Z$ boson decay

We propose to utilize the exclusive $Z$-boson rare decays $Z\to Υ(ns)+γ$ to constrain the $Zb\bar{b}$ couplings at the HL-LHC and 100 TeV proton-proton collider. We demonstrate that the event yield of the proposed processes is sensitive to the axial-vector component of the $Zb\bar{b}$ coupling and can provide complementary information to the jet-charge weighted single-spin asymmetry measurement at the EIC and the $gg\to Zh$ production rate measurement at the LHC. By applying the NRQCD factorization formalism, we calculate the partial decay width of $Z\to Υ(ns)+γ$ to the NLO accuracy in strong interaction, which is found to agree with those obtained from the light-cone distribution amplitude approach. We show that the HL-LHC can break the degeneracy of the $Zb\bar{b}$ couplings, as implied by the precision electroweak data at LEP and SLC, if the signal efficiency can be improved by a factor of 1.7 from the present ATLAS analysis at the 13 TeV LHC with an integrated luminosity of $36.1~{\rm fb}^{-1}$.

ResBos2 and the CDF W Mass Measurement

The recent CDF $W$ mass measurement of 80,433 $\pm$ 9 MeV is the most precise direct measurement. However, this result deviates from the Standard Model predicted mass of 80,359.1 $\pm$ 5.2 MeV by $7σ$. The CDF experiment used an older version of the ResBos code that was only accurate at NNLL+NLO, while the ResBos2 code is able to make predictions at N${}^3$LL+NNLO accuracy. We determine that the data-driven techniques used by CDF capture most of the higher order corrections, and using higher order corrections would result in a decrease in the value reported by CDF by at most 10 MeV.

The PDF4LHC21 combination of global PDF fits for the LHC Run III

A precise knowledge of the quark and gluon structure of the proton, encoded by the parton distribution functions (PDFs), is of paramount importance for the interpretation of high-energy processes at present and future lepton-hadron and hadron-hadron colliders. Motivated by recent progress in the PDF determinations carried out by the CT, MSHT, and NNPDF groups, we present an updated combination of global PDF fits: PDF4LHC21. It is based on the Monte Carlo combination of the CT18, MSHT20, and NNPDF3.1 sets followed by either its Hessian reduction or its replica compression. Extensive benchmark studies are carried out in order to disentangle the origin of the differences between the three global PDF sets. In particular, dedicated fits based on almost identical theory settings and input datasets are performed by the three groups, highlighting the role played by the respective fitting methodologies. We compare the new PDF4LHC21 combination with its predecessor, PDF4LHC15, demonstrating their good overall consistency and a modest reduction of PDF uncertainties for key LHC processes such as electroweak gauge boson production and Higgs boson production in gluon fusion. We study the phenomenological implications of PDF4LHC21 for a representative selection of inclusive, fiducial, and differential cross sections at the LHC. The PDF4LHC21 combination is made available via the LHAPDF library and provides a robust, user-friendly, and efficient method to estimate the PDF uncertainties associated to theoretical calculations for the upcoming Run III of the LHC and beyond.

Impact of LHCb 13 TeV $W$ and $Z$ pseudo-data on the Parton Distribution Functions

We study the potential of the LHCb 13 TeV single $W^{\pm}$ and $Z$ boson pseudo-data for constraining the parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton. As an example, we demonstrate the sensitivity of the LHCb 13 TeV data, collected with integrated luminosities of 5 fb$^{-1}$ and 300 fb$^{-1}$, to reducing the PDF uncertainty bands of the CT14HERA2 PDFs, using the error PDF updating package {\sc ePump}. The sensitivities of various experimental observables are compared. Generally, sizable reductions in PDF uncertainties can be observed in the 300 fb$^{-1}$ data sample, particularly in the small-$x$ region. The double-differential cross section measurement of $Z$ boson $p_T$ and rapidity can greatly reduce the uncertainty bands of $u$ and $d$ quarks in almost the whole $x$ range, as compared to various single observable measurements.

Detecting a μτ-philic Z' boson via photon initiated processes at the LHC

Discrepancy between the measured value and the Standard Model prediction of the muon anomalous magnetic moment is a possible hint for new physics. A $Z^\prime$ particle with $μτ$ flavor violating couplings can give a large contribution to the muon anomalous magnetic moment due to the $τ$ mass enhancement at the one-loop level, and is known to explain the above discrepancy. In this paper, we study the potential of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) for detecting such a $Z^\prime$ boson via the $p p \toμ^-μ^-τ^+τ^+ $ process. Earlier studies in the literature only considered the production channel with quark initial states ($p p \to q \bar q \toμ^-μ^-τ^+τ^+ $). Here, we show that the photon initiated process, $p p \to γγ\to μ^-μ^-τ^+τ^+ $, is in fact the dominant production mode, for a heavy $Z^\prime$ boson of mass greater than a few hundred GeV. The potential of the high luminosity (HL) LHC is also considered.

Determining the Shape of Higgs Potential at Future Colliders

Although the Higgs boson has been discovered, its self-couplings are poorly constrained. This leaves the nature of the Higgs boson undetermined. Motivated by different Higgs potential scenarios other than the Landau-Ginzburg type in the standard model, we systematically organize various new physics scenarios -- elementary Higgs, Nambu-Goldstone Higgs, Coleman-Weinberg Higgs, and Tadpole-induced Higgs, etc. We find that double-Higgs production at the 27 TeV high energy LHC can be used to discriminate different Higgs potential scenarios, while it is necessary to use triple-Higgs production at a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider to fully determine the shape of the Higgs potential.

New CTEQ global analysis of quantum chromodynamics with high-precision data from the LHC

We present the new parton distribution functions (PDFs) from the CTEQ-TEA collaboration, obtained using a wide variety of high-precision Large Hadron Collider (LHC) data, in addition to the combined HERA I+II deep-inelastic scattering data set, along with the data sets present in the CT14 global QCD analysis. New LHC measurements in single-inclusive jet production with the full rapidity coverage, as well as production of Drell-Yan pairs, top-quark pairs, and high-$p_T$ $Z$ bosons, are included to achieve the greatest sensitivity to the PDFs. The parton distributions are determined at NLO and NNLO, with each of these PDFs accompanied by error sets determined using the Hessian method. Fast PDF survey techniques, based on the Hessian representation and the Lagrange Multiplier method, are used to quantify the preference of each data set to quantities such as $α_s(m_Z)$, and the gluon and strange quark distributions. We designate the main resulting PDF set as CT18. The ATLAS 7 TeV precision $W/Z$ data are not included in CT18, due to their tension with other data sets in the global fit. Alternate PDF sets are generated including the ATLAS precision 7 TeV $W/Z$ data (CT18A), a new scale choice for low-$x$ DIS data (CT18X), or all of the above with a slightly higher choice for the charm mass (CT18Z). Theoretical calculations of standard candle cross sections at the LHC (such as the $gg$ fusion Higgs boson cross section) are presented.

Probing $Zt\bar{t}$ couplings using $Z$ boson polarization in $ZZ$ production at hadron colliders

We propose to utilize the polarization information of the $Z$ bosons in $ZZ$ production, via the gluon-gluon fusion process $gg\to ZZ$, to probe the $Zt\bar{t}$ gauge coupling. The contribution of longitudinally polarized $Z$ bosons is sensitive to the axial-vector component ($a_t$) of the $Zt\bar{t}$ coupling. We demonstrate that the angular distribution of the charged lepton from $Z$ boson decays serves well for measuring the polarization of $Z$ bosons and the determination of $a_t$. We show that $ZZ$ production via the $gg\to ZZ$ process complement to $Zt\bar{t}$ and $tZj$ productions in measuring the $Zt\bar{t}$ coupling at hadron colliders.

CT14QED PDFs from Isolated Photon Production in Deep Inelastic Scattering

We describe the implementation of Quantum Electrodynamic (QED) evolution at Leading Order (LO) along with Quantum Chromodynamic (QCD) evolution at Next-to-Leading Order (NLO) in the CTEQ-TEA Global analysis package. The inelastic contribution to the photon Parton Distribution Function (PDF) is described by a two-parameter ansatz, coming from radiation off the valence quarks, and based on the CT14 NLO PDFs. Setting the two parameters to be equal allows us to completely specify the inelastic photon PDF in terms of the inelastic momentum fraction carried by the photon, $p_0^γ$, at the initial scale $Q_0=1.295$ GeV. We obtain constraints on the photon PDF by comparing with ZEUS data~\cite{Chekanov:2009dq} on the production of isolated photons in deep inelastic scattering, $ep\rightarrow eγ+X$. For this comparison we present a new perturbative calculation of the process that consistently combines the photon-initiated contribution with the quark-initiated contribution. Comparison with the data allows us to put a constraint at the 90\% confidence level of $p_0^γ\lesssim0.14\%$ for the inelastic photon PDF at the initial scale of $Q_0=1.295$ GeV in the one-parameter radiative ansatz. The resulting inelastic CT14QED PDFs will be made available to the public. In addition, we also provide CT14QEDinc PDFs, in which the {\em inclusive} photon PDF at the scale $Q_0$ is defined by the sum of the inelastic photon PDF and the elastic photon distribution obtained from the Equivalent Photon Approximation.

Long Range Correlation in Higgs Boson Plus Two Jets Production at the LHC

We study Higgs boson plus two high energy jets production at the LHC in the kinematics where the two jets are well separated in rapidity. The partonic processes are dominated by the t-channel weak boson fusion (WBF) and gluon fusion (GF) contributions. We derive the associated QCD resummation formalism for the correlation analysis where the total transverse momentum q_\perp of the Higgs boson and two jets is small. Because of different color structures, the resummation results lead to distinguished behaviors: the WBF contribution peaks at relative low q_\perp while all GF channel contributions are strongly de-correlated and spread to a much wider q_\perp range. By applying a kinematic cut on q_\perp, one can effectively increase the WBF signal to the GF background by a significant factor. This greatly strengthens the ability to investigate the WBF channel in Higgs boson production and study the couplings of Higgs to electroweak bosons.

NNLO QCD Corrections to t-channel Single Top-Quark Production and Decay

We present a fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of t-channel single top-quark production and decay at the LHC under narrow-width approximation and neglecting cross-talk between incoming protons. We focus on the fiducial cross sections at 13 TeV, finding that the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections can reach the level of -6%. The scale variations are reduced to the level of a percent. Our results can be used to improve experimental acceptance estimates and the measurements of the single top-quark production cross section and the top-quark electroweak couplings.

Transverse Momentum Resummation for Dijet Correlation in Hadronic Collisions

We study the transverse momentum resummation for dijet correlation in hadron collisions based on the Collins-Soper-Sterman formalism. The complete one-loop calculations are carried out in the collinear factorization framework for the differential cross sections at low imbalance transverse momentum between the two jets. Important cross checks are performed to demonstrate that the soft divergences cancelled out between different diagrams, and in particular, those associated with final state jets. The leading and sub-leading logarithms are identified. All order resummation is derived following the transverse momentum dependent factorization at this order. Its phenomenological applications are also presented.

Universal Non-perturbative Functions for SIDIS and Drell-Yan Processes

We update the well-known BLNY fit to the low transverse momentum Drell-Yan lepton pair productions in hadronic collisions, by considering the constraints from the semi-inclusive hadron production in deep inelastic scattering (SIDIS) from HERMES and COMPASS experiments. We follow the Collins-Soper-Sterman (CSS) formalism with the b_*-prescription. A universal non-perturbative form factor associated with the transverse momentum dependent quark distributions is found in the analysis with a new functional form different from that of BLNY. This releases the tension between the BLNY fit to the Drell-Yan data with the SIDIS data from HERMES/COMPASS in the CSS resummation formalism.

Higgs Boson Cross Section from CTEQ-TEA Global Analysis

We study the uncertainties of the Higgs boson production cross section through the gluon fusion subprocess at the LHC (with $\sqrt s=7, 8$ and $14$ TeV) arising from the uncertainties of the parton distribution functions (PDFs) and of the value of the strong coupling constant $α_s(M_Z)$. These uncertainties are computed by two complementary approaches, based on the Hessian and the Lagrange Multiplier methods within the CTEQ-TEA global analysis framework. We find that their predictions for the Higgs boson cross section are in good agreement. Furthermore, the result of the Lagrange Multiplier method supports the prescriptions we have previously provided for using the Hessian method to calculate the combined PDF and $α_s$ uncertainties, and to estimate the uncertainties at the $68\%$ confidence level by scaling them from the $90\%$ confidence level.

Intrinsic Charm Parton Distribution Functions from CTEQ-TEA Global Analysis

We study the possibility of intrinsic (non-perturbative) charm in parton distribution functions (PDF) of the proton, within the context of the CT10 next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) global analysis. Three models for the intrinsic charm (IC) quark content are compared: (i) $\hat{c}(x) = 0$ (zero-IC model); (ii) $\hat{c}(x)$ is parametrized by a valence-like parton distribution (BHPS model); (iii) $\hat{c}(x)$ is parametrized by a sea-like parton distribution (SEA model). In these models, the intrinsic charm content, $\hat{c}(x)$, is included in the charm PDF at the matching scale $Q_c=m_c=1.3$ GeV. The best fits to data are constructed and compared. Correlations between the value of $m_c$ and the amount of IC are also considered.

Kinematical correlations for Higgs boson plus High Pt Jet Production at Hadron Colliders

We investigate the effect of QCD resummation to kinematical correlations in the Higgs boson plus high transverse momentum (Pt) jet events produced at hadron colliders. We show that at the complete one-loop order, the Collins-Soper-Sterman resummation formalism can be applied to derive the Sudakov form factor, which is found to be independent of jet-finding algorithm. We compare the singular behavior of resummation calculation to fixed order prediction in the case that Higgs boson and high Pt jet are produced nearly back-to-back in their transverse momenta, and find a perfect agreement. The phenomenological importance of the resummation effect at the LHC is also demonstrated.

NLO QCD corrections to dijet production via quark contact interactions

We present the exact next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to dijet production at the LHC via quark contact interactions, with different color and chiral structures induced from new physics. Following the recent analysis of quark compositeness search at the LHC, we find that the NLO QCD corrections can lower the dijet cross sections by several tens percent, depending on the theory parameters and the selected kinematic regions, and reduce the dependence of the cross sections on factorization and renormalization scales. We also calculate the renormalization group (RG) improved NLO cross sections by summing over the large logarithms from the RG running of Wilson coefficients. Moreover, we investigate the NLO QCD effects on various experimental observables and exclusion limits of quark compositeness scale.

Soft Gluon Resummations in Dijet Azimuthal Angular Correlations at the Collider

We derive all order soft gluon resummation in dijet azimuthal angular correlation in hadronic collisions at the next-to-leading logarithmic level. The relevant coefficients for the Sudakov resummation factor, the soft and hard factors, are calculated. The theory predictions agree well with the experimental data from D0 Collaboration at the Tevatron. This provides a benchmark calculation for the transverse momentum dependent QCD resummation for jet productions in hadron collisions and can be readily applied at the CERN LHC.

The CT10 NNLO Global Analysis of QCD

We present next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) parton distribution functions (PDFs) from the CTEQ-TEA group. The CT10NNLO PDF fit is based on essentially the same global data sets used in the CT10 and CT10W NLO PDF analyses. After exploring the goodness of the fits to the HERA combined data and the Tevatron jet data, we present various predictions at NNLO accuracy for both existing and forthcoming precision measurements from the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The range of variations in the gluon distribution introduced by correlated systematic effects in inclusive jet production is also examined.

Discriminating Higgs production mechanisms using jet energy profiles

We present a new tool for precision measurements of the Higgs boson production mechanisms at the LHC. We study events with a Higgs boson produced with two forward jets. Even with fairly stringent cuts, one expects a significant contamination of gluon fusion (GF) in addition to vector-boson fusion (VBF) in the event sample. By measuring the jet energy profile of the most central jet, we find that SM production can be distinguished from either pure VBF or pure GF at the $5σ$ level with 100 fb$^{-1}$ of luminosity at the 14 TeV LHC. Moreover, this discrimination technique can be used to validate or rule out new physics models that predict similar observable branching fractions as the 125 GeV SM Higgs but have different production mechanisms.

Heavy Quarkonium Production at Low Pt in NRQCD with Soft Gluon Resummation

We extend the non-relativistic QCD (NRQCD) prediction for the production of heavy quarkonium with low transverse momentum in hadronic collisions by taking into account effects from all order soft gluon resummation. Following the Collins-Soper-Sterman formalism, we resum the most singular terms in the partonic subprocesses. The theoretical predictions of $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ productions are compared to the experimental data from the fixed target experiments (E866) and the collider experiments (RHIC, Tevatron, LHC). The associated non-perturbative Sudakov form factor for the gluon distributions is found to be different from the previous assumption of rescaling the quark form factor by the ratio of color factors. This conclusion should be further checked by future experiments on Higgs boson and/or di-photon production in $pp$ collisions. We also comment on the implication of our results on determining the color-octet matrix elements associated with the $J/ψ$ and $Υ$ productions in the NRQCD factorization formalism.

Parton Distribution Benchmarking with LHC Data

We present a detailed comparison of the most recent sets of NNLO PDFs from the ABM, CT, HERAPDF, MSTW and NNPDF collaborations. We compare parton distributions at low and high scales and parton luminosities relevant for LHC phenomenology. We study the PDF dependence of LHC benchmark inclusive cross sections and differential distributions for electroweak boson and jet production in the cases in which the experimental covariance matrix is available. We quantify the agreement between data and theory by computing the chi2 for each data set with all the various PDFs. PDF comparisons are performed consistently for common values of the strong coupling. We also present a benchmark comparison of jet production at the LHC, comparing the results from various available codes and scale settings. Finally, we discuss the implications of the updated NNLO PDF sets for the combined PDF+alphaS uncertainty in the gluon fusion Higgs production cross section.

QCD resummation for light-particle jets

We construct an evolution equation for the invariant-mass distribution of light-quark and gluon jets in the framework of QCD resummation. The solution of the evolution equation exhibits a behavior consistent with Tevatron CDF data: the jet distribution vanishes in the small invariant-mass limit, and its peak moves toward the high invariant-mass region with the jet energy. We also construct an evolution equation for the energy profile of the light-quark and gluon jets in the similar framework. The solution shows that the energy accumulates faster within a light-quark jet cone than within a gluon jet cone. The jet energy profile convoluted with hard scattering and parton distribution functions matches well with the Tevatron CDF and the large-hadron-collider (LHC) CMS data. Moreover, comparison with the CDF and CMS data implies that jets with large (small) transverse momentum are mainly composed of the light-quark (gluon) jets. At last, we discuss the application of the above solutions for the light-particle jets to the identification of highly-boosted heavy particles produced at LHC.

Discovery and Identification of W' and Z' in SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) Models at the LHC

We explore the discovery potential of W' and Z' boson searches for various SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) models at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), after taking into account the constraints from low energy precision measurements and direct searches at both the Tevatron (1.96 TeV) and the LHC (7 TeV). In such models, the W' and Z' bosons emerge after the electroweak symmetry is spontaneously broken. Two patterns of the symmetry breaking are considered in this work: one is SU(2)_L x SU(2)_2 x U(1)_X to SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y (BP-I), another is SU(2)_1 x SU(2)_2 x U(1)_Y to SU(2)_L x U(1)_Y (BP-II). Examining the single production channel of W' and Z' with their subsequent leptonic decays, we find that the probability of detecting W' and Z' bosons in the considered models at the LHC (with 14 TeV) is highly limited by the low energy precision data constraints. We show that observing Z' alone, without seeing a W', does not rule out new physics models with non-Abelian gauge extension, such as the phobic models in BP-I. Models in BP-II would predict the discovery of degenerate W' and Z' bosons at the LHC.

General-mass treatment for deep inelastic scattering at two-loop accuracy

We present a next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) realization of a general quark mass scheme (S-ACOT-$χ$) in deep inelastic scattering and explore the impact of NNLO terms on heavy-quark structure functions $F_{2,L}^{c}(x,Q)$. An amended QCD factorization theorem for DIS is discussed that validates the S-ACOT-$χ$ scheme to all orders in the QCD coupling strength. As a new feature, kinematical constraints on collinear production of heavy quarks that are crucial near the heavy-quark threshold are included in the amended factorization theorem. An algorithmic procedure is outlined for implementing this scheme at NNLO by using mass-dependent and massless results from literature. At two loops in QCD cut diagrams, the S-ACOT-$χ$ scheme reduces scale dependence of heavy-quark DIS cross sections as compared to the fixed-flavor number scheme.

Improved resummation prediction on Higgs boson production at hadron colliders

We improve the resummation calculations in the ResBos program for the Higgs boson production via gluon-gluon fusion by including the NNLO Wilson coefficient functions and G-functions. The improvement leads to increasing the total cross section predictions of the new ResBos program, dubbed as ResBos2, for Higgs boson production by about 8% and 6% at the Tevatron and the LHC, respectively, as compared to the old ResBos program. Furthermore, the improved predictions are compared with those from the programs HNNLO and HqT2. We find that they agree well for the total cross sections but differ slightly for the transverse momentum $Q_T$ distributions. With ResBos2, we present the distributions of the two variables $a_T$ and $ϕ^{*}$, which can have better experimental resolutions than $Q_T$, for the process of Higgs boson decaying into a photon pair. Theoretical uncertainties of the ResBos2 predictions are also discussed.

MEKS: a program for computation of inclusive jet cross sections at hadron colliders

EKS is a numerical program that predicts differential cross sections for production of single-inclusive hadronic jets and jet pairs at next-to-leading order (NLO) accuracy in a perturbative QCD calculation. We describe MEKS 1.0, an upgraded EKS program with increased numerical precision, suitable for comparisons to the latest experimental data from the Large Hadron Collider and Tevatron. The program integrates the regularized patron-level matrix elements over the kinematical phase space for production of two and three partons using the VEGAS algorithm. Precise QCD predictions on top quark pair production mediated by massive color octet vector boson at hadron colliders

We present a theoretical framework for systematically calculating next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD effects to various experimental observables in models with massive COVB in a model independent way at hadron colliders. Specifically, we show the numerical results for the NLO QCD corrections to total cross sections, invariant mass distribution and AFB of top quark pairs production mediated by a massive COVB in both the fixed scale (top quark mass) scheme and the dynamical scale (top pair invariant mass) scheme. Our results show that the NLO QCD calculations in the dynamical scale scheme is more reasonable than the fixed scheme and the naive estimate of the NLO effects by simple rescaling of the LO results with the SM NLO K-factor is not appropriate.

Calculation of Associated Production of a Top Quark and a W' at the LHC

We investigate collider signatures of a top-philic W' model, in which the W' boson couples only to the third-generation quarks of the standard model. The main discovery channel for this W' is through associated production of the W' and top quark, yielding a top-quark pair plus an extra bottom quark jet as a signal. We do a full simulation of the signal and relevant backgrounds. We develop a method of analysis that allows us to conclude that discovery of the W' is promising at the LHC despite large standard model backgrounds. Bottom quark tagging of the extra jet is key to suppressing the backgrounds.

Improved Predictions for Higgs Q_T at the Tevatron and the LHC

The search for the Higgs boson at the Tevatron and the LHC relies on detailed calculations of the kinematics of Higgs boson production and decay. In this paper, we improve the calculation of the distribution in transverse momentum, $Q_T$, of the Higgs boson in the gluon fusion production process, $gg\to H$, by matching the resummed distribution at small $Q_T$ with the ${\cal O}(α_{s}^4)$ fixed-order perturbative calculation at high $Q_T$ in the ResBos Monte Carlo program. The distribution is higher at large $Q_T$ than with the old ${\cal O}(α_{s}^3)$ fixed-order perturbative calculation, and the matching with the resummed calculation is much smoother. The total cross section is also increased, more in line with next-to-next-to-leading-order calculations. We also study the effect of the new calculation on the distribution of $Δϕ_{\ell\ell}$ in the overall process $gg\to H\to W^{+} W^{-}\to\ell^{+}\ell^{-}ν\barν$, and the effect of PDF uncertainties on the distributions at the Tevatron and the LHC.

Next-to-leading QCD effect to the quark compositeness search at the LHC

Recently, the CMS and ATLAS Collaborations at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) have set exclusion limits on the quark compositeness scale by comparing their data to the leading order and the scaled next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculations, respectively. In this Letter, we present the exact NLO QCD corrections to the dijet production induced by the quark contact interactions. We show that as compared to the exact calculation, the scaled NLO QCD prediction adopted by the ATLAS Collaboration has overestimated the new physics effect on some direct observables by more than 30% and renders a higher limit on the quark compositeness scale. The destructive contribution from the exact NLO correction will also lower the compositeness scale limit set by the CMS Collaboration.

One-loop Helicity Amplitudes for Top Quark Pair Production in Randall-Sundrum Model

In this paper, we show how to calculate analytically the one-loop helicity amplitudes for the process $q\bar{q} rightarrow t\bar{t}$ induced by KK gluon, using the spinor-helicity formalism. A minimal set of Feynman rules which are uniquely fixed by gauge invariance and the color representation of the KK gluon are derived and used in the calculation. Our results can be applied to a variety of models containing a massive color octet vector boson.

QCD resummation for jet substructures

We provide a novel development in jet physics by predicting the energy profiles of light-quark and gluon jets in the framework of perturbative QCD. Resumming large logarithmic contributions to all orders in the coupling constant, our predictions are shown to agree well with Tevatron CDF and Large-Hadron-Collider CMS data. We also extend our resummation formalism to the invariant mass distributions of light-quark and gluon jets produced in hadron collisions. The predicted peak positions and heights in jet mass distributions are consistent with CDF data within uncertainties induced by parton distribution functions.

Axigluons cannot explain the observed top quark forward-backward asymmetry

We study an SU(3)^2 axigluon model introduced by Frampton, Shu, and Wang to explain the recent Fermilab Tevatron observation of a significant positive enhancement in the top quark forward-backward asymmetry relative to standard model predictions. First, we demonstrate that data on neutral B_d-meson mixing excludes the region of model parameter space where the top asymmetry is predicted to be the largest. Keeping the gauge couplings below the critical value that would lead to fermion condensation imposes further limits at large axigluon mass, while precision electroweak constraints on the model are relatively mild. Furthermore, by considering an extension to an SU(3)^3 color group, we demonstrate that embedding the model in an extra-dimensional framework can only dilute the axigluon effect on the forward-backward asymmetry. We conclude that axigluon models are unlikely to be the source of the observed top quark asymmetry.

Global Analysis of General SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1) Models with Precision Data

We present the results of a global analysis of a class of models with an extended electroweak gauge group of the form SU(2) x SU(2) x U(1), often denoted as G(221) models, which include as examples the left-right, the lepto-phobic, the hadro-phobic, the fermio-phobic, the un-unified, and the non-universal models. Using an effective Lagrangian approach, we compute the shifts to the coefficients in the electroweak Lagrangian due to the new heavy gauge bosons, and obtain the lower bounds on the masses of the Z' and W' bosons. The analysis of the electroweak parameter bounds reveals a consistent pattern of several key observables that are especially sensitive to the effects of new physics and thus dominate the overall shape of the respective parameter contours.

New parton distributions for collider physics

We extract new parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton by global analysis of hard scattering data in the general-mass framework of perturbative quantum chromodynamics. Our analysis includes new theoretical developments together with the most recent collider data from deep-inelastic scattering, vector boson production, and single-inclusive jet production. Due to the difficulty in fitting both the DO Run-II W lepton asymmetry data and some fixed-target DIS data, we present two families of PDFs, CT10 and CT10W, without and with these high-luminosity W lepton asymmetry data included in the global analysis. With both sets of PDFs, we study theoretical predictions and uncertainties for a diverse selection of processes at the Fermilab Tevatron and the CERN Large Hadron Collider.

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to a heavy resonance production and decay into top quark pair at the LHC

We present a complete next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD calculation to a heavy resonance production and decay into a top quark pair at the LHC, where the resonance could be either a Randall-Sundrum (RS) Kaluza-Klein (KK) graviton $G$ or an extra gauge boson $Z'$. The complete NLO QCD corrections can enhance the total cross sections by about $80\%- 100\%$ and $20\%- 40\%$ for the $G$ and the $Z'$, respectively, depending on the resonance mass. We also explore in detail the NLO corrections to the polar angle distributions of the top quark, and our results show that the shapes of the NLO distributions can be different from the leading order (LO) ones for the KK graviton. Moreover, we study the NLO corrections to the spin correlations of the top quark pair production via the above process, and find that the corrections are small.

The spin is preserved in production and decay by using the narrow width approximation for the (anti)top quark. We show the effect of different O(alpha_s) contributions on the inclusive cross section and various kinematic distributions at parton level after imposing relevant kinematic cuts to select s-channel single top quark events. We also discuss several possibilities for measuring the top quark polarization.

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the top quark decay via the Flavor-Changing Neutral-Current operators with mixing effects

In this paper detailed calculations of the complete $\mathcal{O}(α_s)$ corrections to top quark decay widths $Γ(t\to q+V)$ are presented ($V=g,γ,Z$). Besides describing in detail the calculations in our previous paper (arXiv:0810.3889), we also include the mixing effects of the Flavor-Changing Neutral-Current (FCNC) operators for $t\to q+γ$ and $t\to q+Z$, which were not considered in our previous paper. The results for $t\to q+g$ are the same as in our previous paper. But the mixing effects can either be large or small, and increase or decrease the branching ratios for $t\to q+γ$ and $t\to q+Z$, depending on the values of the anomalous couplings ($κ^{g,γ,Z}_{\mathrm{tq}}/Λ$, $f^{g,γ,Z}_{\mathrm{tq}}$ and $h^{g,γ,Z}_{\mathrm{tq}}$).

Parton Distributions for Event Generators

In this paper, conventional Global QCD analysis is generalized to produce parton distributions optimized for use with event generators at the LHC. This optimization is accomplished by combining the constraints due to existing hard-scattering experimental data with those from anticipated cross sections for key representative SM processes at LHC (by the best available theory) as joint input to the global analyses. The PDFs obtained in these new type of global analyses using matrix elements calculated in any given order will be best suited to work with event generators of that order, for predictions at the LHC. This is most useful for LO event generators at present. Results obtained from a few candidate PDF sets (labeled as CT09MCS, CT09MC1 and CT09MC2) for LO event generators produced in this way are compared with those from other approaches.

Uncertainty induced by QCD coupling in the CTEQ global analysis of parton distributions

We examine the dependence of parton distribution functions (PDFs) on the value of the QCD coupling strength $α_{s}(M_{Z})$. We explain a simple method that is rigorously valid in the quadratic approximation normally applied in PDF fitting, and fully reproduces the correlated dependence of theoretical cross sections on $α_s$ and PDF parameters. This method is based on a statistical relation that allows one to add the uncertainty produced by $α_s$, computed with some special PDF sets, in quadrature with the PDF uncertainty obtained for the fixed $α_s$ value (such as the CTEQ6.6 PDF set). A series of four CTEQ6.6AS PDFs realizing this approach, for $α_s$ values in the interval $0.116 \leq α_{s}(M_{Z}) \leq 0.120$, is presented. Using these PDFs, the combined $α_{s}$ and PDF uncertainty is assessed for theoretical predictions at the Fermilab Tevatron and Large Hadron Collider.

Collider Inclusive Jet Data and the Gluon Distribution

Inclusive jet production data are important for constraining the gluon distribution in the global QCD analysis of parton distribution functions. With the addition of recent CDF and D0 Run II jet data, we study a number of issues that play a role in determining the up-to-date gluon distribution and its uncertainty, and produce a new set of parton distributions that make use of that data. We present in detail the general procedures used to study the compatibility between new data sets and the previous body of data used in a global fit. We introduce a new method in which the Hessian matrix for uncertainties is ``rediagonalized'' to obtain eigenvector sets that conveniently characterize the uncertainty of a particular observable.

Heavy Quark Mass Effects in Deep Inelastic Scattering and Global QCD Analysis

A new implementation of the general PQCD formalism of Collins, including heavy quark mass effects, is described. Important features that contribute to the accuracy and efficiency of the calculation of both neutral current (NC) and charged current (CC) processess are explicitly discussed. This new implementation is applied to the global analysis of the full HERA I data sets on NC and CC cross sections, with correlated systematic errors, in conjunction with the usual fixed-target and hadron collider data sets. By using a variety of parametrizations to explore the parton parameter space, robust new parton distribution function (PDF) sets (CTEQ6.5) are obtained. The new quark distributions are consistently higher in the region x ~ 10^{-3} than previous ones, with important implications on hadron collider phenomenology, especially at the LHC. The uncertainties of the parton distributions are reassessed and are compared to the previous ones. A new set of CTEQ6.5 eigenvector PDFs that encapsulates these uncertainties is also presented.

The Strange Parton Distribution of the Nucleon: Global Analysis and Applications

The strangeness degrees of freedom in the parton structure of the nucleon are explored in the global analysis framework, using the new CTEQ6.5 implementation of the general mass perturbative QCD formalism of Collins. Higgs Boson Production and Decay in Little Higgs Models with T-parity

We study Higgs boson production and decay in a certain class of Little Higgs models with T-parity in which some T-parity partners of the Standard Model (SM) fermions gain their masses through Yukawa-type couplings. We find that the Higgs boson production cross section of a 120 GeV Higgs boson at the CERN LHC via gg fusion process at one-loop level could be reduced by about 45%, 35% and 20%, as compared to its SM prediction, for a relatively low new particle mass scale f = 600, 700 and 1000 GeV, respectively. On the other hand, the weak boson fusion cross section is close to the SM value. Furthermore, the Higgs boson decay branching ratio into di-photon mode can be enhanced by about 35% in small Higgs mass region in certain case, for the total decay width of Higgs boson in the Little Higgs model is always smaller than that in the SM.

We study the production of Higgs boson (phi) via the e^{-}e^{+}--> e^{-}e^{+} phi process at a future International Linear Collider (ILC) with sqrt{S}=1 TeV. At this energy the ZZ-fusion rate, as predicted by the Standard Model, dominates over the associated ZH production rate. Here, we consider a class of theory models based on the effective phi-VV (with V=Z, gamma) couplings generated by dimension-6 operators. We also show how to use the kinematical distributions of the final state leptons to discriminate the CP-even and CP-odd Higgs bosons produced at the ILC, when the phi-gamma-gamma coupling dominates the Higgs boson production rate.

Higgs Boson Production at Hadron Colliders with Soft Gluon Effects: I. Backgrounds

The gold-plated discovery mode of a Standard Model like Higgs boson at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the H -> Z^0 Z^0 decay mode. To find and then measure the properties of the Higgs, it is crucial to have the most precise theoretical prediction both for the signal and the QCD background in this mode. In this work we calculate the effects of the initial-state multiple soft-gluon emission on the kinematic distributions of photon and Z^0 pairs produced in hadron collisions. The Collins-Soper-Sterman formalism is extended to resum the large logarithmic terms due to soft-gluons. The resummed total rates, the invariant mass, transverse momentum, and rapidity distributions of the photon and Z^0 pairs, and the transverse momentum distributions of the individual vector bosons are presented and compared to the fixed order predictions in the whole kinematic range, for the LHC energies and for the upgraded Fermilab Tevatron. Our conclusion is that the resummed predictions should be used when extracting the Higgs signal at the LHC.

Next-to-Leading Order Corrections to Single Top Quark Production and Decay at the Tevatron: 1. s-channel Process

We present a study of s-channel single top quark production at the upgraded Tevatron $p\bar{p}$ collider, including the next-to-leading order (NLO) QCD corrections to the production and the decay of the top quark. The "modified" narrow width approximation was adopted to preserve the spin of the top quark in its production and decay. We discuss the effect of the different $O(α_s)$ contributions on the inclusive cross section as well as various kinematic distributions after imposing the relevant cuts to select s-channel single top signal events. In particular the $O(α_s)$ decay contribution, while small in size, has a significant impact on several distributions. With the help of the best-jet algorithm to reconstruct the top quark we demonstrate that it is possible to study kinematical and spin correlations in s-channel single top events. We furthermore compare top quark spin measurements in two different basis and show how NLO corrections have to be taken into consideration in searches for the Higgs boson through $W^{\pm}H$ associated production at the Tevatron.

q_T Uncertainties for W and Z Production

Analysis of semi-inclusive DIS hadroproduction suggests broadening of transverse momentum distributions at small x below 1E-3 ~ 1E-2 which can be modeled in the Collins-Soper-Sterman formalism by a modification of impact parameter dependent parton densities. We investigate these consequences for the production of electroweak bosons at the Tevatron and the LHC. Anomalous Gauge Interactions of the Higgs Boson: Precision Constraints and Weak Boson Scatterings

Interaction of Higgs scalar (H) with weak gauge bosons (V=W,Z) is the {\it key} to understand electroweak symmetry breaking (EWSB) mechanism. New physics effects in the HVV interactions, as predicted by models of compositeness, supersymmetry and extra dimensions, can be formulated as anomalous couplings via a generic effective Lagrangian. We first show that the existing electroweak precision data already impose nontrivial indirect constraints on the anomalous HVV couplings. Then, we systematically study VV --> VV scatterings in the TeV region, via Gold-plated pure leptonic decay modes of the weak bosons. We demonstrate that, even for a light Higgs boson in the mass range 115GeV < m_H < 300GeV, this process can directly probe the anomalous HVV interactions at the LHC with an integrated luminosity of 300fb^{-1}, which further supports the ``No-Lose'' theorem for the LHC to uncover the EWSB mechanism. Comparisons with the constraints from measuring the cross section of VH associate production and the Higgs boson decay width are also given.

New Physics in the Third Family and its Effect on Low Energy Data

We investigate, in detail, a model in which the third family fermions are subjected to an SU(2) dynamics different from the first two families. Constrained by the precision Z-pole data, the heavy gauge boson mass is bounded from below to be about 1.7 TeV at the $2σ$ level. The flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) in the lepton sector can be significant in $τ\leftrightarrow e$ and $τ\leftrightarrow μ$ transitions. In the latter case, the ratio $Br(τ\to μ\bar{ν_μ} ν_τ)/ Br(τ\to e \bar{ν_e} ν_τ)$ and $Br(τ\to μμμ)$ can constrain the model better than LEP/SLC data in some region of the parameter space. Furthermore, FCNCs are unavoidable in the quark sector. Significant effects to the $B^0-\bar{B^0}$ mixing and the rare decays of the K and B mesons, such as $K^\pm \to π^\pm ν{\bar ν}$, $b \to s ν{\bar ν}, B_s \to τ^+τ^-, μ^+μ^-$ and $B_{s,d} \to μ^\pm τ^\mp$, are expected.

QCD Corrections to Scalar Production via Heavy Quark Fusion at Hadron Colliders

We recently proposed that, due to the top-quark-mass enhanced Yukawa coupling, the s-channel production of a charged scalar or pseudo-scalar from heavy quark fusion can be an important new mechanism for discovering non-standard spin-0 particles. In this work, we present the complete O(alpha_s) QCD corrections to this s-channel production process at hadron colliders, including the results of QCD resummation over multiple soft-gluon emission. The systematic QCD-improved production and decay rates at the FermiLab Tevatron and the CERN LHC are given for the charged top-pions in the topcolor models and for the charged Higgs bosons in the generic two Higgs doublet model. The direct extension to the production of the neutral (pseudo-)scalars via bb\bar fusion is studied in the minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) with large tan(beta), and in the topcolor model with large bottom Yukawa coupling.

Semi-Inclusive Hadron Production at HERA: the Effect of QCD Gluon Resummation

The formalism is based on all-order resummation of large logarithms arising in the perturbative treatment of hadron multiplicities and energy flows in this region. It is shown that the current region of semi-inclusive DIS is similar to the region of small transverse momenta in vector boson production at hadron colliders. We use this resummation formalism to describe transverse energy flows and charged particle multiplicity measured at the electron-proton collider HERA. Effects of QCD Resummation on $W^+h$ and $t\bar b$ Production at the Tevatron

The resummation of multiple soft gluon emission affects the production rate and kinematic distributions of $W^+h$ (where h is a Higgs boson) and $t \bar b$ pairs at the Tevatron with $\sqrt{s}=2$ TeV. Using the Collins-Soper-Sterman resummation formalism, the production rate is enhanced over the next-to-leading-order (NLO) prediction by 2-3% for the $W^+h$ process, for Higgs boson masses between 80-120 GeV, and over 3% for the $t\bar b$ process for $m_t=175$ GeV. After resummation, the $t\bar b$ rate changes by 12-13% when $m_t$ is varied by $\pm 5$ GeV. Various kinematic distributions are presented for the individual final state particles and for the pair. The explicit radiation of hard gluons in NLO QCD is included also for the $t\bar b$ final state.

Probing Flavor Changing Neutral Higgs Couplings at LHC

Uniquely heavy with mass at the weak scale, the top quark may have large flavor changing couplings to Higgs bosons that are as yet unexplored. We show that such couplings can be directly probed at the LHC through the parton subprocess $c(\bar c)g \to t (\bar t)A^0$, where the pseudoscalar $A^0$ subsequently decays into $t \bar c$ or ${\bar t} c$, giving rise to the intriguing final state of like sign top quark pairs. After demanding $\ell^\pm\ell^\pm$, missing energy and two $b$-jets, the major background turns out to be $q\bar q' \to Wt \bar t$, which can be partially suppressed by jet counting. The signal can then manifest itself in the asymmetry of numbers of $\ell^+\ell^+$ and $\ell^-\ell^-$ events. To further improve the signal over background, efficient $t$ vs. $\bar t$ tagging methods should be developed.

Supersymmetric Electroweak Parity Nonconservation in Top Quark Pair Production at the Fermilab Tevatron

We evaluate the supersymmetric (SUSY) electroweak corrections to the effect of parity nonconservation in $q {\bar q} \to t {\bar t}$ production at the Fermilab Tevatron predicted by the Minimal Supersymmetric Model (MSSM). We find that the parity nonconserving asymmetry from the SUSY electroweak and SUSY Yukawa loop corrections predicted by the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model and the MSSM models with scenarios motivated by current data is about one percent. It will be challenging to observe such a small asymmetry at the Tevatron with 10 fb^{-1} of luminosity. It could however be observable if both the top- and bottom-squarks are light and $\tan β$ is smaller than 1, though theses parameters are not favored by mSUGRA.

Top Quark Interactions and the Search for New Physics

We give a complete set of 19 independent effective dimension 5 interactions involving the top and bottom quarks with the electroweak gauge bosons within the context of the chiral Lagrangian. The anomalous operators contribute to the leading energy power E^3 of the V_L V_L -> t\bar t or t\bar b amplitudes. We also show the top quark production rates at the LHC and the LC via V_L V_L fusion processes. If no anomalous production rate is found, then these coefficients can be bound (based on the naive dimensional analysis) to be of order 10^{-2} or 10^{-1}. This is about an order of magnitude more stringent than the bounds for the next-to-leading order bosonic operators commonly studied in V_L V_L -> V_L V_L scatterings. The effect on a CP-odd observable is also briefly discussed.

Then we estimate the contributions of ``all'' next-to-leading order (NLO) bosonic operators to the amplitudes of the relevant scattering processes which can be measured at high energy colliders, such as the LHC and future Linear Colliders. Based upon these results, we globally classify the sensitivities of testing all NLO bosonic operators for probing the electroweak symmetry breaking mechanism at high energy colliders.

Probing the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Sector with the Top Quark

A study on effective anomalous interactions up to dimension 5 of the top quark with the electroweak gauge bosons is made in the non-linear Chiral Lagrangian approach. Bounds on the anomalous dimension four terms are obtained from their contribution to low energy data. Also, the potential contribution to the production of top quarks at hadron colliders (the Tevatron and the LHC) and the electron Linear Collider from both dimension 4 and 5 operators is analysed.

Detecting a Light Stop from Top Decays at the Tevatron

We study the possibility of discovering or excluding a light top squark (stop) based on top quark decays in the t-tbar events produced at the Fermilab Tevatron. In particular, we consider the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model with the sparticle spectrum m_{chi^+_1}+m_b, M_W+m_{chi^0_1}+m_b > m_{stop} > m_{chi^0_1}+m_c, where chi^0_1 is the lightest neutralino and chi^+_1 is the lightest chargino, so that t -> stop chi^0_1 and stop -> c chi^0_1. All other sparticle masses are assumed to be heavier than m_t. Such a spectrum seeks to explain the experimental values of alpha_s(M_Z^2), R_b and A_{LR} obtained from LEP/SLC data. We find that the prospect to observe a light stop via this channel at the Tevatron is very promising.

Equivalence Theorem and Probing the Electroweak Symmetry Breaking Sector

We examine the Lorentz non-invariance ambiguity in longitudinal weak-boson scatterings and the precise conditions for the validity of the Equivalence Theorem (ET). {\it Safe} Lorentz frames for applying the ET are defined, and the intrinsic connection between the longitudinal weak-boson scatterings and probing the symmetry breaking sector is analyzed. A universal precise formulation of the ET is presented for both the Standard Model and the Chiral Lagrangian formulated Electro-Weak Theories. It is shown that in electroweak theories with strongly interacting symmetry breaking sector, the longitudinal weak-boson scattering amplitude {\it under proper conditions} can be replaced by the corresponding Goldstone-boson scattering amplitude in which all the internal weak-boson lines and fermion loops are ignored.

Strategies for Probing CP Properties in the Top Quark System at $e^-e^+$ and Hadron Colliders

I discuss strategies for probing CP properties in the top quark system at $e^-e^+$ and hadron Colliders. The magnitudes of CP violation effects predicted by various models are reviewed. I also discuss the potential of various current and future colliders in measuring the CP asymmetry associated with the productions and/or decays of the top quarks.

A Probe of New Physics in Top Quark Pair Production at $e^-e^+$ Colliders

We describe how to probe new physics through examination of the form factors describing the Ztt couplings via the scattering process e^-e^+->t+tbar. We focus on experimental methods on how the top quark momentum can be determined and show how this can be applied to select polarized samples of $t\bar{t}$ pairs through the angular correlations in the final state leptons. We also study the dependence on the energy and luminosity of an \ee\ collider to probe a CP violating asymmetry at the $10^{-2}$ level.}

Proposals for Studying TeV $W_L W_L \rightarrow W_L W_L$ Interactions Experimentally

We discuss how to experimentally study the symmetry breaking sector by observing $W_L W_L \rightarrow W_L W_L$ interactions in the TeV region. We discuss some general features of the event structure in the signal and background events. Various tricks to enhance the signal--to--background ratio are also presented. We show how to detect longitudinal $W$--bosons either in the central rapidity region of the detector or in the beam pipe direction.
