Differential Distributions for t-channel Single Top-Quark Production and Decay at Next-to-Next-to-Leading Order in QCD

We present a detailed phenomenological study of the next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) QCD corrections for $t$-channel single top (anti-)quark production and its semi-leptonic decay at the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We find the NNLO corrections for the total inclusive rates at the LHC with different center of mass energies are generally smaller than the NLO corrections, indicative of improved convergence. However, they can be large for differential distributions, reaching a level of $10\%$ or more in certain regions of the transverse momentum distributions of the top (anti-)quark and the pseudo-rapidity distributions of the leading jet in the event. In all cases the perturbative hard scale uncertainties are greatly reduced after the NNLO corrections are included. We also show a comparison of the normalized parton-level distributions to recent data from the 8 TeV measurement of the ATLAS Collaboration. The NNLO corrections tend to shift the theoretical predictions closer to the measured transverse momentum distribution of the top (anti)-quark. Importantly, for the LHC at 13 TeV, we present NNLO cross sections in a fiducial volume with decays of the top quark included.

Charm-quark production in deep-inelastic neutrino scattering at NNLO in QCD

We present a fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of charm quark production in charged-current deep-inelastic scattering, with full charm-quark mass dependence. The next-to-next-to-leading order corrections in perturbative quantum chromodynamics are found to be comparable in size to the next-to-leading order corrections in certain kinematic regions. We compare our predictions with data on dimuon production in (anti-)neutrino scattering from a heavy nucleus. Our results can be used to improve the extraction of the parton distribution function of a strange quark in the nucleon.

NNLO QCD Corrections to t-channel Single Top-Quark Production and Decay

We present a fully differential next-to-next-to-leading order calculation of t-channel single top-quark production and decay at the LHC under narrow-width approximation and neglecting cross-talk between incoming protons. We focus on the fiducial cross sections at 13 TeV, finding that the next-to-next-to-leading order QCD corrections can reach the level of -6%. The scale variations are reduced to the level of a percent. Our results can be used to improve experimental acceptance estimates and the measurements of the single top-quark production cross section and the top-quark electroweak couplings.

Hadronic production of $W$ and $Z$ bosons at large transverse momentum

We introduce a modified factorization formalism in quantum chromodynamics for hadronic production of $W$ and $Z$ bosons at large transverse momentum $p_T$. When $p_T$ is much larger than the invariant mass $Q$ of the vector boson, this new factorization formalism systematically resums the large fragmentation logarithms, $α_s^m\ln^m(p_T^2/Q^2)$, to all orders in the strong coupling $α_s$. Using our modified factorization formalism, we calculate the next-to-leading order (NLO) predictions for $W$ and $Z$ boson production at high $p_T$ at the CERN Large Hadron Collider and at a future 100 TeV proton-proton collider. Our NLO results are about $5\%$ larger in normalization, and they show improved convergence and moderate reduction of the scale variation compared to the NLO predictions derived in a conventional fixed-order perturbative expansion.

The twofold emergence of the $a_1$ axial vector meson in high energy hadronic production

The high statistics COMPASS results on diffractive dissociation $πN \rightarrow πππN$ suggest that the isospin $I=1$ spin-parity $J^{PC}= 1^{++}$ $a_1(1260)$ resonance could be split into two states: $a_1(1260)$ decaying into an S-wave $ρπ$ system, and $a_1^\prime(1420)$ decaying into a P-wave $f_0(980)π$ system. We analyse the reaction by incorporating our previous treatment of resonant re-scattering corrections in the Drell-Deck forward production process. Our results show that the COMPASS results are fully consistent with the existence of a single axial-vector $a_1$ resonance. The characteristic structure of the production process, which differs in the two orbital angular momentum states, plays a crucial role in this determination. Provided the theoretical analysis of the reaction is done in a consistent manner, this single resonance produces two peaks at different locations in the two channels, with a rapid increase of the phase difference between their amplitudes arising mainly from the structure of the production process itself, and not from a dynamical resonance effect. In addition, this analysis clarifies questions related to the mass, width, and decay rates of the $a_1$ resonance.

Higgs boson physics and broken flavor symmetry -- LHC phenomenology

The LHC implications are presented of a simplified model of broken flavor symmetry in which a new scalar (a flavon) emerges with mass in the TeV range. We summarize the influence of the model on Higgs boson physics, notably on the production cross section and decay branching fractions. Limits are obtained on the flavon $φ$ from heavy Higgs boson searches at the LHC at 7 and 8 TeV. The branching fractions of the flavon are computed as a function of the flavon mass and the Higgs-flavon mixing angle. We explore possible discovery of the flavon at 14 TeV, particularly via the $φ\rightarrow Z^0Z^0$ decay channel in the $2\ell2\ell'$ final state, and through standard model Higgs boson pair production $φ\rightarrow hh$ in the $b\bar{b}γγ$ final state. The flavon mass range up to $500$ GeV could probed down to quite small values of the Higgs-flavon mixing angle with 100 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at 14 TeV.

Higgs-flavon mixing and LHC phenomenology in a simplified model of broken flavor symmetry

The LHC phenomenology of a low-scale gauged flavor symmetry model with inverted hierarchy is studied, through introduction of a simplified model of broken flavor symmetry. A new scalar (a flavon) and a new neutral top-philic massive gauge boson emerge with mass in the TeV range along with a new heavy fermion associated with the standard model top quark. After checking constraints from electroweak precision observables, we investigate the influence of the model on Higgs boson physics, notably on its production cross section and decay branching fractions. Limits on the flavon $φ$ from heavy Higgs boson searches at the LHC at 7 and 8 TeV are presented. The branching fractions of the flavon are computed as a function of the flavon mass and the Higgs-flavon mixing angle. We also explore possible discovery of the flavon at 14 TeV, particularly via the $φ\rightarrow Z^0Z^0$ decay channel in the $2\ell2\ell'$ final state, and through standard model Higgs boson pair production $φ\rightarrow hh$ in the $b\bar{b}γγ$ final state. We conclude that the flavon mass range up to $500$ GeV could probed down to quite small values of the Higgs-flavon mixing angle with 100 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at 14 TeV.

Interpretations and Implications of the Top Quark Rapidity Asymmetries $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^{\ell}$

Forward-backward asymmetries $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^\ell$ are observed in the top quark $t$ rapidity distribution and in the rapidity distribution of charged leptons $\ell$ from top quark decay at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider, and a charge asymmetry $A_C$ is seen in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In this paper, we update our previous studies of the Tevatron asymmetries using the most recent data. We provide expectations for $A_C$ at the LHC based first on model independent extrapolations from the Tevatron, and second based on new physics models that can explain the Tevatron asymmetries. We examine the relationship of the two asymmetries $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^\ell$. We show their connection through the $(V-A)$ spin correlation between the charged lepton and the top quark with different polarization states. We show that the ratio of the two asymmetries provides independent insight into new physics models that are invoked to fit the top quark asymmetry. We emphasize the value of the measurement of both asymmetries, and we conclude that a model which produces more right-handed than left-handed top quarks is favored by the present Tevatron data.

LHC and Tevatron constraints on a W' model interpretation of the top quark forward-backward asymmetry

Aspects of a flavor-changing W' model with right-handed couplings are addressed in this paper in light of Tevatron and LHC data. Our fit to the Tevatron top-quark forward-backward asymmetry and the tt_bar inclusive cross section includes higher-order loop effects in the effective interaction. The higher order corrections change the best fit value of the W' effective coupling strength as a function of the W' mass. The consistency of the model is checked against the shape of the tt_bar invariant mass distribution. We use these updated W' parameters to compute the expected contributions from W't associated production and, for the first time, W'W' pair production at the LHC. We do a full Monte Carlo simulation of the tt_bar+X final state, including interference between the tW' induced tt_bar j process and the standard model tt_bar j process. Interference effects are shown to be quantitatively important, particularly when the W' mass is large. The jet multiplicity distribution in tt_bar-jet production at 8 TeV constrains the W' model severely.

Measuring Top-Quark Polarization in Top-Pair + Missing Energy Events

The polarization of a top-quark can be sensitive to new physics beyond the standard model. We propose a novel method to measure top-quark polarization, based on the charged lepton energy fraction in top-quark decay, and illustrate the method with a detailed simulation of top-quark pairs produced in supersymmetric top squark pair production. We show that the lepton energy ratio distribution that we define is very sensitive to the top-quark polarization but insensitive to the precise measurement of the top-quark energy.

Top Quark Polarization and the Search for New Physics

Forward-backward asymmetries $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^\ell$ are observed in the top quark $t$ rapidity distribution and in the rapidity distribution of charged leptons $\ell$ from top quark decay at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider, and a charge asymmetry $A_C$ is seen in proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). In this presentation, I summarize research my collaborators and I have done on the interpretation and implications of the Tevatron asymmetries and provide expectations for $A_C$ at the LHC. The two asymmetries $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^\ell$ are connected through the $(V-A)$ spin correlation between the charged lepton and the top quark with different polarization states. The ratio of the two asymmetries provides independent insight into the physics interpretation of the top quark asymmetry. A new physics model which produces more right-handed than left-handed top quarks appears to be indicated by the present Tevatron data, but an improvement in precision is desirable.

Associated Higgs plus vector boson test of a fermiophobic Higgs boson

Production in association with an electroweak vector boson V is a distinctive mode of production for a Higgs boson H without tree-level couplings to fermions, known as a fermiophobic Higgs boson. We focus on HV associated production with H decay into a pair of photons, and V into a pair of jets, with the goal of distinguishing a fermiophobic Higgs boson from the standard model Higgs boson. Performing a simulation of the signal and pertinent QCD backgrounds, and using the same event selection cuts employed by the LHC ATLAS Collaboration, we argue that existing LHC data at 7 TeV with 4.9 fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity may distinguish a fermiophobic Higgs boson from a standard model Higgs boson near 125 GeV at about 1.9 standard deviation signal significance (1.9 sigma) per experiment. At 8 TeV we show that associated production could yield 2.8 sigma significance per experiment with 10 fb^{-1} of data.

Measuring Top Quark Polarization in Top Pair plus Missing Energy Events

The polarization of a top quark can be sensitive to new physics beyond the standard model. Since the charged lepton from top quark decay is maximally correlated with the top quark spin, it is common to measure the polarization from the distribution in the angle between the charged lepton and the top quark directions. We propose a novel method based on the charged lepton energy fraction and illustrate the method with a detailed simulation of top quark pairs produced in supersymmetric top squark pair production. We show that the lepton energy ratio distribution that we define is very sensitive to the top quark polarization but insensitive to the precise measurement of the top quark energy.

The Top Quark Production Asymmetries $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^{\ell}$

A large forward-backward asymmetry is seen in both the top quark rapidity distribution $A_{FB}^t$ and in the rapidity distribution of charged leptons $A_{FB}^\ell$ from top quarks produced at the Tevatron. We study the kinematic and dynamic aspects of the relationship of the two observables arising from the spin correlation between the charged lepton and the top quark with different polarization states. We emphasize the value of both measurements, and we conclude that a new physics model which produces more right-handed than left-handed top quarks is favored by the present data.

Calculation of Associated Production of a Top Quark and a W' at the LHC

We investigate collider signatures of a top-philic W' model, in which the W' boson couples only to the third-generation quarks of the standard model. The main discovery channel for this W' is through associated production of the W' and top quark, yielding a top-quark pair plus an extra bottom quark jet as a signal. We do a full simulation of the signal and relevant backgrounds. We develop a method of analysis that allows us to conclude that discovery of the W' is promising at the LHC despite large standard model backgrounds. Bottom quark tagging of the extra jet is key to suppressing the backgrounds.

Calculation of W b bbar Production via Double Parton Scattering at the LHC

We investigate the potential to observe double parton scattering at the Large Hadron Collider in p p -> W b bbar X -> l nu b bbar X at 7 TeV. Our analysis tests the efficacy of several kinematic variables in isolating the double parton process of interest from the single parton process and relevant backgrounds for the first 10 inverse fb of integrated luminosity. These variables are constructed to expose the independent nature of the two subprocesses in double parton scattering, pp -> l nu X and pp -> b bbar X. We use next-to-leading order perturbative predictions for the double parton and single parton scattering components of W b bbar and for the pertinent backgrounds. The next-to-leading order contributions are important for a proper description of some of the observables we compute. We find that the double parton process can be identified and measured with significance S/sqrt(B) ~ 10, provided the double parton scattering effective cross section sigma_{eff} ~ 12 mb.

Dynamical Origin of the Correlation between the Asymmetries $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^{\ell}$

A larger than expected forward-backward asymmetry in rapidity is observed in top quark pairs produced in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron. The asymmetry is seen in both the top quark distribution $A_{FB}^t$ and in the distribution of charged leptons $A_{FB}^\ell$ from top quark decay. In this paper, we study the kinematic and dynamic aspects of the tight relationship of the two observables arising from the spin correlation between the charged lepton and the top quark with different polarization states. We also consider two benchmark new physics models, an axigluon model and a flavor-changing $W^\prime$ model. These models could explain the values of both $A_{FB}^t$ and $A_{FB}^\ell$. We emphasize the value of both measurements, and we conclude that a model which produces more right-handed than left-handed top quarks is favored by the present data.

Investigations of Double Parton Scattering: Example of $pp \rightarrow b \bar{b} \rm{jet~jet} X$

Signature kinematic variables and characteristic concentrations in phase space of double parton scattering are discussed. These properties should allow the double parton contribution to $pp \rightarrow b \bar{b} \rm {jet jet} X$ at Large Hadron Collider energies to be distinguished from the usual single parton scattering contribution. A methodology is suggested to measure the size of the double-parton cross section.

Tevatron Top Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry -- Implications for Same-sign Top Quark Pair Production

The forward-backward asymmetry for top quarks measured in proton-antiproton collisions at the Tevatron shows an interesting deviation from standard model expectations. Among possible interpretations, the exchange of a non-universal, flavor-changing $Z^\prime$ is of some interest as it naturally predicts a top quark in the forward region of rapidity. To reproduce the size of the Tevatron asymmetry, the couplings of the $Z^\prime$ to standard model quarks must be large, inevitably leading to production of same-sign top quark pairs at the Tevatron and at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We discuss the constraints on this model from (a) the Tevatron $t \bar{t}$ cross section, (b) the Tevatron $t \bar{t}$ invariant mass distribution, and the limits at the Tevatron on the same sign top quark pair cross section. We explore the discovery potential for $tt$ and $ttj$ production in early LHC experiments at 7 TeV and conclude that if a $tt$ signal is not observed with 1 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, then a non-universal $Z^\prime$ alone cannot explain the Tevatron forward-backward asymmetry. Limits on the same sign cross section at the LHC from the CMS collaboration already disfavor this interpretation of the reported asymmetry.

Top Quark Forward-Backward Asymmetry and Same-Sign Top Quark Pairs

The top quark forward-backward asymmetry measured at the Tevatron collider shows a large deviation from standard model expectations. Among possible interpretations, a non-universal $Z^\prime$ model is of particular interest as it naturally predicts a top quark in the forward region of large rapidity. To reproduce the size of the asymmetry, the couplings of the $Z^\prime$ to standard model quarks must be large, inevitably leading to copious production of same-sign top quark pairs at the energies of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). We explore the discovery potential for $tt$ and $ttj$ production in early LHC experiments at 7-8 TeV and conclude that if {\it no} $tt$ signal is observed with 1 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, then a non-universal $Z^\prime$ alone cannot explain the Tevatron forward-backward asymmetry.

Top Quark Polarization As A Probe of Models with Extra Gauge Bosons

New heavy gauge bosons exist in many models of new physics beyond the standard model of particle physics. Discovery of these W^\prime and Z^\prime resonances and the establishment of their spins, couplings, and other quantum numbers would shed light on the gauge structure of the new physics. The measurement of the polarization of the SM fermions from the gauge boson decays would decipher the handedness of the coupling of the new states, an important relic of the primordial new physics symmetry. Since the top quark decays promptly, its decay preserves spin information. We show how decays of new gauge bosons into third generation fermions (W^\prime \to tb, Z^\prime\to t\bar{t}) can be used to determine the handedness of the couplings of the new states and to discriminate among various new physics models.

Color Sextet Scalars in Early LHC Experiments

We explore the potential for discovery of an exotic color sextet scalar in same-sign top quark pair production in early running at the LHC. We present the first phenomenological analysis at colliders of color sextet scalars with full top quark spin correlations included. We demonstrate that one can measure the scalar mass, the top quark polarization, and confirm the scalar resonance with 1 inverse fb of integrated luminosity. The top quark polarization can distinguish gauge triplet and singlet scalars.

Color Sextet Vector Bosons and Same-Sign Top Quark Pairs at the LHC

We investigate the production of beyond-the-standard-model color-sextet vector bosons at the Large Hadron Collider and their decay into a pair of same-sign top quarks. We demonstrate that the energy of the charged lepton from the top quark semi-leptonic decay serves as a good measure of the top-quark polarization, which, in turn determines the quantum numbers of the boson and distinguishes vector bosons from scalars.

Constraints on color-octet fermions from a global parton distribution analysis

We report a parton distribution function (PDF) analysis of a complete set of hadron scattering data, in which a color-octet fermion (such as a gluino of supersymmetry) is incorporated as an extra parton constituent along with the usual standard model constituents. The data set includes the most up-to-date results from deep-inelastic scattering and from jet production in hadron collisions. Another feature is the inclusion in the fit of data from determinations of the strong coupling alpha_s(Q) at large and small values of the hard scale Q. Our motivation is to determine the extent to which the global PDF analysis may provide constraints on the new fermion, as a function of its mass and alpha_s(M_Z), independent of assumptions such as the mechanism of gluino decays. Based on this analysis, we find that gluino masses as low as 30 to 50 GeV may be compatible with the current hadronic data. Gluino masses below 15 GeV (25 GeV) are excluded if alpha_s(M_Z) varies freely (is equal to 0.118). At the outset, stronger constraints had been anticipated from jet production cross sections, but experimental systematic uncertainties, particularly in normalization, reduce the discriminating power of these data.

Higgs Boson Search Sensitivity in the $H \to WW$ Dilepton Decay Mode at $\sqrt s = 7$ and 10 TeV

Prospects for discovery of the standard model Higgs boson are examined at center of mass energies of $7$ and $10$ TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. We perform a simulation of the signal and principal backgrounds for Higgs boson production and decay in the $W^+ W^-$ dilepton mode, finding good agreement with the ATLAS and CMS collaboration estimates of signal significance at 14 TeV for Higgs boson masses near $m_H = 160$~GeV. At the lower energy of $7$~TeV, using the same analysis cuts as these collaborations, we compute expected signal sensitivities of about $2$ standard deviations ($σ$'s) at $m_H = 160$~GeV in the ATLAS case, and about 3.6~$σ$ in the CMS case for $1$~fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity. Integrated luminosities of 8~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ and 3~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ are needed in the ATLAS case at $7$ and $10$~TeV, respectively, for $5~σ$ level discovery. In the CMS case, the numbers are 2~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ and 1~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ at $7$ and $10$~TeV. Our different stated expectations for the two experiments arise from the more restrictive analysis cuts in the CMS case. Recast as exclusion limits, our results show that with $1~{\rm fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at 7~TeV, the LHC may be able to exclude $m_H$ values in the range 160 to 180~GeV provided no signal is seen.

Isolated leptons from heavy flavor decays: Theory and data

Events with isolated leptons play a prominent role in signatures of new physics phenomena at high energy collider physics facilities. In earlier publications, we examine the standard model contribution to isolated lepton production from bottom and charm mesons and baryons through their semileptonic decays (b, c -> l + X), showing that this source can overwhelm the effects of other standard model processes in some kinematic domains. In this paper, we show that we obtain good agreement with recent Tevatron collider data, both validating our simulations and showing that we underestimate the magnitude of the heavy-flavor contribution to the isolated lepton yields. We also show that the isolation requirement acts as a narrow bandpass filter on the momentum of the isolated lepton, and we illustrate the effect of this filter on the background to Higgs boson observation in the dilepton mode. We introduce and justify a new rule of thumb: isolated electrons and muons from heavy flavor decay are produced with roughly the same distributions as b and c quarks, but with 1/200 times the rates of b and c production, respectively.

Next-to-Leading Order Cross Sections for New Heavy Fermion Production at Hadron Colliders

We evaluate the cross sections for new heavy fermion production at three Large Hadron Collider energies accurate to next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics. We treat the cases of pair production of heavy quarks via strong interactions, single heavy quark production via electroweak interactions, and the production of heavy leptons. Theoretical uncertainties associated with the choice of the renormalization scale and the parton distribution functions are specified. We derive a simple and useful parameterization of our results which should facilitate phenomenological studies of new physics models that predict new heavy quarks and/or leptons.

Characteristics and Estimates of Double Parton Scattering at the Large Hadron Collider

We evaluate the kinematic distributions in phase space of 4-parton final-state subprocesses produced by double parton scattering, and we contrast these with the final-state distributions that originate from conventional single parton scattering. Our goal is to establish the distinct topologies of events that arise from these two sources and to provide a methodology for experimental determination of the relative magnitude of the double parton and single parton contributions at Large Hadron Collider energies. We examine two cases in detail, the $b \bar{b} \rm{jet jet}$ and the 4 jet final states. After full parton-level simulations, we identify a few variables that separate the two contributions remarkably well, and we suggest their use experimentally for an empirical measurement of the relative cross section. We show that the double parton contribution falls off significantly more rapidly with the transverse momentum of the leading jet, but, up to issues of the relative normalization, may be dominant at modest values of this transverse momentum.

Higgs Boson Decay into a Pair of Leptons

The decay of a Higgs boson into a pair of W bosons h --> W^+W^-, is a dominant mode for Higgs boson masses above 135 GeV. At hadron colliders, searches for this decay focus on channels in which both W bosons decay leptonically into charged leptons, h --> W^+ W^- --> l^+ l^- plus missing energy. We show that semileptonic decays of heavy flavors are an important background to this signal. Lepton isolation provides too little suppression of heavy flavor contributions, and an additional 4 to 8 orders-of-magnitude suppression must come from physics cuts. An increase of the cut on the the minimum transverse momentum of non-leading leptons in multilepton events is one effective way to achieve the needed suppression, without appreciable loss of the Higgs boson signal.

Production of Prompt Photons

After a brief review of the production dynamics of prompt single photons in hadron collisions, I summarize a new QCD calculation of the transverse momentum distribution of continuum prompt photon pairs produced by QCD subprocesses, including all-orders soft-gluon resummation valid at next-to-next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. Resummation is necessary to obtain reliable predictions, as well as good agreement with data from the Fermilab Tevatron, in the range of transverse momentum where the cross section is largest. Transverse momentum distribution of Upsilon production in hadronic collisions

We calculate the transverse momentum p_T distribution for production of the Upsilon states in hadronic reactions. For small $p_T (\leq M_Υ)$, we resum to all orders in the strong coupling alpha_s the process-independent large logarithmic contributions that arise from initial-state gluon showers. We demonstrate that the p_T distribution at low p_T is dominated by the region of small impact parameter b and that it may be computed reliably in perturbation theory. We express the cross section at large p_T by the alpha_s^3 lowest-order non-vanishing perturbative contribution. Our results are consistent with data from the Fermilab Tevatron collider.

Hadronic decays of $\bm{χ_{bJ}}$ into light bottom squarks

We calculate the rates for inclusive hadronic decay of the three $χ_{bJ}$ states into a pair of light bottom squarks as a function of the masses of the bottom squark and the gluino. We include color-singlet and color-octet configurations. The color-octet contribution is found to be insignificant for the $χ_{b0}$ but can dominate in the $χ_{b2}$ case if current lattice estimates are used for the color-octet matrix element. In comparison with the standard model values, bottom squark decays can increase the predicted hadronic width of the $χ_{b0}$ by as much as 35%, for very small bottom squark masses and gluino masses in the range of 12 GeV, but make a small contribution in the cases of $χ_{b1}$ and $χ_{b2}$. Data from decays of the $χ_{bJ}$ states could provide significant new bounds on the existence and masses of supersymmetric particles.

The Puzzle of the Bottom Quark Production Cross Section

The production rate of bottom quarks at hadron colliders exceeds the expectations of next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics. An additional contribution from pair-production of light gluinos, of mass 12 to 16 GeV, with two-body decays into bottom quarks and light bottom squarks, yields a differential cross section for bottom quarks in better agreement with data. The masses of the gluino and bottom squark are restricted further by the ratio of like-sign to opposite-sign leptons at hadron colliders. For values of the transverse momentum Q_T greater than roughly half the pair mass Q, Q_T > Q/2, we show that the differential cross section is dominated by subprocesses initiated by incident gluons, provided that the polarized gluon density is not too small. Massive lepton-pair differential cross sections should be a good source of independent constraints on the polarized gluon density, free from the experimental and theoretical complications of photon isolation that beset studies of prompt photon production. We provide predictions for the spin-averaged and spin-dependent differential cross sections as a function of Q_T at energies relevant for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven, and we compare these with predictions for real prompt photon production.

Massive Lepton Pairs as a Prompt Photon Surrogate

We discuss the transverse momentum distribution for the production of massive lepton-pairs in hadron reactions at fixed target and collider energies within the context of next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics. For values of the transverse momentum $Q_T$ greater than the pair mass $Q$, $Q_T > Q$, we show that the differential cross section is dominated by subprocesses initiated by incident gluons. Massive lepton-pair differential cross sections are an advantageous source of constraints on the gluon density, free from the experimental and theoretical complications of photon isolation that beset studies of prompt photon production. We compare calculations with data and provide predictions for the differential cross section as a function of $Q_T$ in proton-antiproton reactions at center-of-mass energies of 1.8 TeV, and in proton-nucleon reactions at fixed target and LHC energies.

Spin Dependence of Associated Production of a Prompt Photon and a Charm Quark at Next-to-Leading Order in QCD

A second order, $O(α^2_s)$, calculation in perturbative quantum chromodynamics is presented of the longitudinal spin dependence of the cross section for the two particle inclusive reaction $p + p \to γ+ c + X$ for large values of the transverse momentum of the prompt photon and charm quark. Differential distributions are provided for the spin-averaged cross section and for the two-spin longitudinal polarization asymmetry $A_{LL}$ at the energy of the Brookhaven Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. An assessment is given of the prospects for determination of the spin dependence of the charm quark density.

Longitudinal Structure Function at Intermediate x and the Gluon Density

Calculations are presented of the longitudinal structure function $F_L(x, Q^2)$. We use next-to-leading order expressions in QCD $({\cal{O}}(α_s^2))$ plus parton densities determined previously from global fits to data on deep inelastic lepton scattering, prompt photon production, and bottom quark production. Anticipated data from the DESY ep collider HERA should provide discriminating information on the gluon density, particularly for values of $x < 0.05$.

Transverse Momentum Distributions for Heavy Quark Pairs

We study the transverse momentum distribution for a $pair$ of heavy quarks produced in hadron-hadron interactions. Predictions for the large transverse momentum region are based on exact order $α_s^3$ QCD perturbation theory. For the small transverse momentum region, we use techniques for all orders resummation of leading logarithmic contributions associated with initial state soft gluon radiation. The combination provides the transverse momentum distribution of heavy quark pairs for all transverse momenta. Explicit results are presented for $b\bar b$ pair production at the Fermilab Tevatron collider and for $c\bar c$ pair production at fixed target energies.
