The Chinese Hα Solar Explorer (CHASE) mission: An overview

The Chinese Hα Solar Explorer (CHASE), dubbed "Xihe" - Goddess of the Sun, was launched on October 14, 2021 as the first solar space mission of China National Space Administration (CNSA). The CHASE mission is designed to test a newly developed satellite platform and to acquire the spectroscopic observations in the Hα waveband. The Hα Imaging Spectrograph (HIS) is the scientific payload of the CHASE satellite. It consists of two observational modes: raster scanning mode and continuum imaging mode. The raster scanning mode obtains full-Sun or region-of-interest spectral images from 6559.7 to 6565.9 Å and from 6567.8 to 6570.6 Å with 0.024 Å pixel spectral resolution and 1 minute temporal resolution. The continuum imaging mode obtains photospheric images in continuum around 6689 Å with the full width at half maximum of 13.4 Å. The CHASE mission will advance our understanding of the dynamics of solar activity in the photosphere and chromosphere. In this paper, we present an overview of the CHASE mission including the scientific objectives, HIS instrument overview, data calibration flow, and first results of on-orbit observations.

Inhibition of Current-spike Formation Based on Longitudinal Phase Space Manipulation for High-Repetition-Rate X-ray FEL

The formation of a double-horn current profile is a challenging issue in the achievement of electron bunch with high peak current, especially for high-repetition-rate X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) where more nonlinear and intricate beam dynamics propagation is involved. Here, we propose to correct the nonlinear beam longitudinal phase space distortion in the photoinjector section with a dual-mode buncher. In combination with the evolutionary many-objective beam dynamics optimization, this method is shown to be effective in manipulating the longitudinal phase space at the injector exit. Furthermore, the formation of the current spike is avoided after the multi-stage charge density modulation and electron bunch with a peak current of 1.6 kA is achieved for 100-pC bunch charge.Start-to-end simulations based on the Shanghai high-repetition-rate XFEL and extreme light facility demonstrate that the proposed scheme can increase the FEL pulse energy by more than 3 times in a cascading operation of echo-enabled harmonic generation and high-gain harmonic generation. Moreover, this method can also be used for longitudinal phase space shaping of electron beams operating at a high repetition rate to meet the specific demands of different researches.

Self-Amplification of Coherent Energy Modulation in Seeded Free-Electron Lasers

The spectroscopic techniques for time-resolved fine analysis of matter require coherent X-ray radiation with femtosecond duration and high average brightness. Seeded free-electron lasers (FELs), which use the frequency up-conversion of an external seed laser to improve temporal coherence, are ideal for providing fully coherent soft X-ray pulses. However, it is difficult to operate seeded FELs at a high repetition rate due to the limitations of present state-of-the-art laser systems. Here, we report the novel self-modulation method for enhancing laser-induced energy modulation, thereby significantly reducing the requirement of an external laser system. Driven by this scheme, we experimentally realize high harmonic generation in a seeded FEL using an unprecedentedly small energy modulation. An electron beam with a laser-induced energy modulation as small as 1.8 times the slice energy spread is used for lasing at the 7th harmonic of a 266-nm seed laser in a single-stage high-gain harmonic generation (HGHG) setup and the 30th harmonic of the seed laser in a two-stage HGHG setup. The results mark a major step towards a high-repetition-rate, fully coherent X-ray FEL.

Cooper Pairing in A Doped 2D Antiferromagnet with Spin-Orbit Coupling

We study the two-dimensional Hubbard model with the Rashba type spin-orbit coupling within and beyond the mean-field theory. The antiferromagnetic ground state for the model at half-filling and the Cooper pairing induced by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations near half-filling are examined based on the random-phase approximation. We show that the antiferromagnetic order is suppressed and the magnetic susceptibility turns out to be anisotropic in the presence of the spin-orbit coupling. Energy spectrums of transverse spin fluctuations are obtained and the effective interactions between holes mediated by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are deduced in the case of low hole doping. It seems that the spin-orbit coupling tends to form s+p-wave Cooper pairs, while the s+d-wave pairing is dominant when the spin-orbit coupling is absent.

Effect of plasmonic near field on the emittance of plasmon-enhanced photocathode

The introduction of the surface plasmon polarizations makes the emittance of the photocathode complicated. In this paper, the emittance of plasmon-enhanced photocathode is analyzed. It is first demonstrated that the plasmonic near field can increase the emittance of the plasmon-enhanced photocathode. A simulation method has been used to estimate the emittance caused by plasmonic near field, and the suppression method also has been discussed, both of which are significant for the design of high performance plasmon-enhanced photocathode.

Collisionless spin dynamics in a magnetic field gradient

We study the collisionless spin dynamics of a harmonically trapped Fermi gas in a magnetic field gradient. In the absence of interactions, the system evolution is periodic: the magnetization develops twists, which evolve into a longitudinal polarization. Recurrences follow. For weak interaction, the exchange interactions lead to beats in these oscillations. We present an array of analytic and numerical techniques for studying this physics.

Demonstration of nonlinear-energy-spread compensation in relativistic electron bunches with corrugated structures

High quality electron beams with flat distributions in both energy and current are critical for many accelerator-based scientific facilities such as free-electron lasers and MeV ultrafast electron diffraction and microscopes. In this Letter we report on using corrugated structures to compensate for the beam nonlinear energy chirp imprinted by the curvature of the radio-frequency field, leading to a significant reduction in beam energy spread. By using a pair of corrugated structures with orthogonal orientations, we show that the quadrupole wake fields which otherwise increase beam emittance can be effectively canceled. This work also extends the applications of corrugated structures to the low beam charge (a few pC) and low beam energy (a few MeV) regime and may have a strong impact in many accelerator-based facilities.

Trapped Bose-Einstein condensates in synthetic magnetic field

Rotating properties of Bose-Einstein condensates in synthetic magnetic field are studied by numerically solving the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and compared with condensates confined in the rotating trap. It seems that it is more difficult to add large angular momentum to condensates spined up by the synthetic magnetic field than by the rotating trap. However, strengthening the repulsive interaction between atoms is an effective and realizable route to overcome this problem and can at least generate vortex-lattice-like structures. In addition, the validity of the Feynman rule for condensates in synthetic magnetic field is verified.

Analysis of the microbunching instability in a mid-energy electron linac

Microbunching instability usually exists in the linear accelerator (linac) of a free electron laser (FEL) facility. If it is not controlled effectively, the beam quality will be damaged seriously and the machine will not operate properly. In the electron linac of a soft X-Ray FEL device, because the electron energy is not very high, the problem can become even more serious. As a typical example, the microbunching instability in the linac of the proposed Shanghai Soft X-ray Free Electron Laser facility (SXFEL) is investigated in detail by means of both analytical formulae and simulation tools. In the study, a new mechanism of introducing random noise into the beam current profile as the beam passes through a chicane-type bunch compressor is proposed. The higher-order modes that appear in the simulations suggest that further improvement of the current theoretical model of the instability is needed.

Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in two dimensional random-bond XY model on a square lattice

We perform Monte Carlo simulations to study the two dimensional random-bond XY model on a square lattice. Two kinds of bond randomness with the coupling coefficient obeying the Gaussian or uniform distribution are discussed. It is shown that the two kinds of disorder lead to similar thermodynamic behaviors if their variances take the same value. This result implies that the variance can be chosen as a characteristic parameter to evaluate the strength of the randomness. In addition, the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition temperature decreases as the variance increases and the transition can even be destroyed as long as the disorder is strong enough.

Double ellipsoidal Fermi surface model of the normal state of ferromagnetic superconductors

We model the normal state of ferromagnetic superconductors with two general ellipsoidal Fermi surfaces (FSs), one for each spin projection $σ=\{\uparrow,\downarrow\}$, each with its ferromagnetically split chemical potential $μ_σ$ and its three distinct single particle effective masses, $\{m_{iσ}\}$, the geometric mean of which is $m_σ$. We study this model in the presence of an arbitrarily oriented magnetic induction, ${\bf B}=μ_{0}{\bf H}+{\bf M_{0}}$, where ${\bf M_{0}}$ includes the Ising-like spontaneous ferromagnetic order, which for URhGe is in the $c$-axis direction above the superconducting transition temperature $T_c$. We assume the low-$T$ total particle density $Σ_σ n_σ({\bf B})$ to be independent of ${\bf B}$, and obtain a self-consistent asymptotic expansion for $\sum_σΠ^{3/2}_σ({\bf B})$ in even powers of ${\bf B}$, where $Π_σ({\bf B})=m_σ({\bf B})μ_σ({\bf B})$. We assume that the $μ_σ({\bf B})$ are linear in ${\bf B}$ for both spins due to the Zeeman interaction and that the remaining even ${\bf B}$ dependence in the $Π_σ({\bf B})$ arises only from $m_{\downarrow}({\bf B})$. Our analogous expression for the Sommerfeld constant $γ({\bf B})$ leads to good fits to the $γ({\bf H})$ data of Aoki and Flouquet [J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. \textbf{81}, 011003 (2012)] obtained for the ferromagnetic superconductor URhGe in the ferromagnetic, non-superconducting phase, with the applied magnetic field ${\bf H}$ along each of the three crystallographic directions. We discuss this model in terms of the reentrant superconducting properties of URhGe and UCoGe. This model can be generalized to an arbitrary number of ellipsoidal FSs.

Experimental demonstration of longitudinal beam phase space linearizer in a free-electron laser facility by corrugated structures

Removal of residual linear energy chirp and intrinsic nonlinear energy curvature in the relativistic electron beam from radiofrequency linear accelerator is of paramount importance for efficient lasing of a high-gain free-electron laser. Recently, it was theoretically and experimentally demonstrated that the longitudinal wakefield excited by the electrons itself in the corrugated structure allows for precise control of the electron beam phase space. In this Letter, we report the first utilization of a corrugated structure as beam linearizer in the operation of a seeded free-electron laser driven by a 140 MeV linear accelerator, where a gain of ~10,000 over spontaneous emission was achieved at the second harmonic of the 1047 nm seed laser, and a free-electron laser bandwidth narrowing by about 50% was observed, in good agreement with the theoretical expectations.

First-order chiral to non-chiral transition in the angular dependence of the upper critical induction of the Scharnberg-Klemm $p$-wave pair state

We calculate the temperature $T$ and angular $(θ,ϕ)$ dependence of the upper critical induction $B_{c2}(θ,ϕ,T)$ for parallel-spin superconductors with an axially symmetric $p$-wave pairing interaction pinned to the lattice and a dominant ellipsoidal Fermi surface (FS). For all FS anisotropies, the chiral Scharnberg-Klemm state $B_{c2}(θ,ϕ,T)$ exceeds that of the chiral Anderson-Brinkman-Morel state, and exhibits a kink at $θ=θ^{*}(T,ϕ)$, indicative of a first-order transition from its chiral, nodal-direction behavior to its non-chiral, antinodal-direction behavior. Applicability to Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, UCoGe, and topological superconductors such as Cu$_x$Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is discussed.

Is the anisotropy of the upper critical field of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ consistent with a helical $p$-wave state?

We calculate the angular and temperature $T$ dependencies of the upper critical field $H_{c2}(θ,ϕ,T)$ for the $C_{4v}$ point group helical $p$-wave states, assuming a single uniaxial ellipsoidal Fermi surface, Pauli limiting, and strong spin-orbit coupling that locks the spin-triplet $\vec{\bf d}$-vectors onto the layers. Good fits to the Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ $H_{c2,a}(θ,T)$ data of Kittaka {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. B {\bf 80}, 174514 (2009)] are obtained. Helical states with $\vec{\bf d}(\vec{\bf k})=k_x\vec{\bf x}-k_y\vec{\bf y}$ and $k_y\vec{\bf x}+k_x\vec{\bf y}$ (or $k_x\vec{\bf x}+k_y\vec{\bf y}$ and $k_y\vec{\bf x}-k_x\vec{\bf y}$) produce $H_{c2}(90^{\circ},ϕ,T)$ that greatly exceed (or do not exhibit) the four-fold azimuthal anisotropy magnitudes observed in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ by Kittaka {\it et al.} and by Mao {\it et al.} [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 84}, 991 (2000)], respectively.

Also it is suitable to study parameter optimization of SLED and analyze the effect from the parameters variations. Simulation results of our method are also presented.

Route to observing topological edge modes in ultracold fermions

We show how to exploit the rich hyperfine structure of fermionic alkali atoms to produce a quasi-1D topological superfluid while avoiding excessive heating from off-resonant scattering. We model interacting fermions where four hyperfine states are coupled by a variety of optical and microwave fields. We calculate the local density of states in a trap, finding regimes with zero energy topological edge modes. Heating rates in this system are significantly suppressed compared to simple Raman-induced spin-orbit coupling approaches.

Superconductivity in a two-dimensional superconductor with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings

We present a general model with both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings to describe a two-dimensional noncentrosymmetric superconductor. The combined effects of the two spin-orbit couplings on superconductivity are investigated in the framework of mean-field theory. We find that the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings result in similar effects on superconductivity if they are present solely in the system. Mixing of spin-singlet and triplet pairings in electron band is induced under the assumption that each quasiparticle band is p-wave paired. If the two types of spin-orbit couplings appear jointly, both the singlet and triplet pairings are weakened and decreased down to their minimum values in the equal-Rashba-Dresselhaus case.

Thermodynamic properties of rotating trapped ideal Bose gases

Ultracold atomic gases can be spined up either by confining them in rotating frame, or by introducing ``synthetic" magnetic field. In this paper, thermodynamics of rotating ideal Bose gases are investigated within truncated-summation approach which keeps to take into account the discrete nature of energy levels, rather than to approximate the summation over single-particle energy levels by an integral as does in semi-classical approximation. Our results show that Bose gases in rotating frame exhibit much stronger dependence on rotation frequency than those in ``synthetic" magnetic field. Consequently, BEC can be more easily suppressed in rotating frame than in ``synthetic" magnetic field.

X-Band deflecting cavity design for ultra-short bunch length measurement of SXFEL at SINAP

For the development of the X-ray Free Electron Lasers test facility (SXFEL) at SINAP, ultra-short bunch is the crucial requirement for excellent lasing performance. It's a big challenge for deflecting cavity to measure the length of ultra-short bunch, and higher deflecting gradient is required for higher measurement resolution. X-band travelling wave deflecting structure has features of higher deflecting voltage and compact structure, which is good performance at ultra-short bunch length measurement. In this paper, a new X-band deflecting structure has been designed operated at HEM11-2pi/3 mode. For suppressing the polarization of deflecting plane of the HEM11 mode, two symmetrical caves are added on the cavity wall to separate two polarized modes. More details of design and simulation results are presented in this paper.

Anomalous angular dependence of the upper critical induction of orthorhombic ferromagnetic superconductors with completely broken p-wave symmetry

We employ the Klemm-Clem transformations to map the equations of motion for the Green functions of a clean superconductor with a general ellipsoidal Fermi surface (FS) characterized by the effective masses $m_1, m_2$, and $m_3$ in the presence of an arbitrarily directed magnetic induction ${\bm B}=B(\sinθ\cosϕ,\sinθ\sinϕ,\cosθ)$ onto those of a spherical FS. We then obtain the transformed gap equation for a transformed pairing interaction $\tilde{V}(\hat{\tilde{\bm k}},\hat{\tilde{\bm k}}')$ appropriate for any orbital order parameter symmetry. We use these results to calculate the upper critical induction $B_{c2}(θ,ϕ)$ for an orthorhombic ferromagnetic superconductor with transition temperatures $T_{\rm Curie}>T_c$. We assume the FS is split by strong spin-orbit coupling, with a single parallel-spin ($\uparrow\uparrow$) pairing interaction of the \textit{p}-wave polar state form locked onto the $\hat{\bm e}_3$ crystal axis normal to the spontaneous magnetization ${\bm M}_0\perp\hat{\bm e}_3$ due to the ferromagnetism. The orbital harmonic oscillator eigenvalues are modified according to $B\rightarrow Bα$, where $α(θ,ϕ)=\sqrt{m_3/m}\sqrt{\cos^2θ+γ^{-2}(ϕ)\sin^2θ}$, $γ^2(ϕ)=m_3/(m_1\cos^2ϕ+m_2\sin^2ϕ)$ and $m=(m_1m_2m_3)^{1/3}$. At fixed $ϕ$, the order parameter anisotropy causes $B_{c2}$ to exhibit a novel $θ$-dependence, which for $γ^2(ϕ)>3$ becomes a double peak at $0^{\circ}<θ^{*}<90^{\circ}$ and at $180^{\circ}-θ^{*}$, providing a sensitive bulk test of the order parameter orbital symmetry in both phases of URhGe and in similar compounds still to be discovered.

Coexistence of p-wave Cooper pairing and ferromagnetism

A two-band model for coexistence of p-wave superconductivity with localized ferromagnetism is studied using the equation of motion approach. It shows that ferromagnetic and superconducting states enhance each other but in a different way from that of the one-band model. The Curie temperature is not only determined by the exchange interactions between localized spins, but also can be increased with the coupling between electrons and spins, and with the p-wave Cooper-pairing interaction. These results are complementary to those of the one-band model, which suggest that the Curie temperature is unlikely to ever be below the superconducting transition temperature.

Dynamics of Bose-Einstein condensates in a one-dimensional optical lattice with double-well potential

We study dynamical behaviors of the weakly interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in the one-dimensional optical lattice with an overall double-well potential by solving the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. It is observed that the double-well potential dominates the dynamics of such a system even if the lattice depth is several times larger than the height of the double-well potential. This result suggests that the condensate flows without resistance in the periodic lattice just like the case of a single particle moving in periodic potentials. Nevertheless, the effective mass of atoms is increased, which can be experimentally verified since it is connected to the Josephson oscillation frequency. Moreover, the periodic lattice enhances the nonlinearity of the double-well condensate, making the condensate more "self-trapped" in the $π$-mode self-trapping regime.

Dynamics of double-well Bose-Einstein Condensates subject to external Gaussian white noise

Dynamical properties of the Bose-Einstein condensate in double-well potential subject to Gaussian white noise are investigated by numerically solving the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The Gaussian white noise is used to describe influence of the random environmental disturbance on the double-well condensate. Dynamical evolutions from three different initial states, the Josephson oscillation state, the running phase and $π$-mode macroscopic quantum self-trapping states are considered. It is shown that the system is rather robust with respect to the weak noise whose strength is small and change rate is high. If the evolution time is sufficiently long, the weak noise will finally drive the system to evolve from high energy states to low energy states, but in a manner rather different from the energy-dissipation effect. In presence of strong noise with either large strength or slow change rate, the double-well condensate may exhibit very irregular dynamical behaviors.

Magnetic properties of two-dimensional charged spin-1 Bose gases

Within the mean-field theory, we investigate the magnetic properties of a charged spin-1 Bose gas in two dimension. In this system the diamagnetism competes with paramagnetism, where Lande-factor $g$ is introduced to describe the strength of the paramagnetic effect. The system presents a crossover from diamagnetism to paramagnetism with the increasing of Lande-factor. The critical value of the Lande-factor, $g_{c}$, is discussed as a function of the temperature and magnetic field. We get the same value of $g_{c}$ both in the low temperature and strong magnetic field limit. Our results also show that in very weak magnetic field no condensation happens in the two dimensional charged spin-1 Bose gas.

Plasma effect in the longitudinal space charge induced microbunching instability for low energy electron beams

The microbunching instability usually exists in the LINAC of a free electron laser (FEL) facility. In many cases, the longitudinal space charge (LSC) is a dominant factor that generates the instability. For the highly bright electron beams, the plasma effect is found to be non-trivial in the development of the instability. In this paper, starting from the Vlasov and Poisson equations in the multiple-dimensional phase space, we perform the straightforward analysis of the microbunching instability based on the explicit formula of the longitudinal electric field introduced by the density perturbation in the longitudinal direction, in such a way to be highly comparable to the well-developed method for higher energy beams. This method generally applies in both the cases with and without acceleration and independent of lattice components. The results show that for a electron beam with small transverse emittance at low energies, which is always the case in the injector of a free electron laser device, the plasma effect results in the oscillation of the longitudinal electric field in the modified plasma frequency that depends on the transverse size of the beam, and the Landau damping effect in the longitudinal electric field due to the uncorrelated longitudinal velocity spread during the beam transportation. These two effects both play important roles in the development of the instability. As the result, the energy modulation driven by the LSC impedance differs from the regular value significantly and the discrepancy leads to the noticeable change of the final gain of the instability.

Radio frequency spectrum of fermions near a narrow Feshbach resonance

We calculate the radio frequency (RF) spectrum of fermionic atoms near a narrow Feshbach resonance, explaining observations made in ultracold samples of $^6\rm{Li}$ [E. L. Hazlett {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 108}, 045304 (2012)]. We use a two channel resonance model to show that the RF spectrum contains two peaks. In the wide-resonance limit, nearly all spectral weight lies in one of these peaks, and typically the second peak is very broad. We find strong temperature dependence, which can be traced to the energy dependence of the two-particle scattering. In addition to microscopic calculations, we use sum rule arguments to find generic features of the spectrum which are model independent.

Simulation studies on laser pulse stability for Dalian Coherent Light Source

Dalian Coherent Light Source will use a 300MeV LINAC to produce fully coherent photon pulses in the wavelength range between 150-50nm by high gain harmonic generation free electron laser (FEL) scheme. To generate stable FEL pulses, stringent tolerance budget is required for the LINAC output parameters, such as the mean beam energy stability, electron bunch arrival time jitter, peak current variation and the transverse beam position offset. In order to provide guidance for the design of the Dalian Coherent Light Source, in this paper, the sensitivity of FEL pulse energy fluctuation to various error sources of the electron bunch was performed using intensive start-to-end FEL simulations.

Study of microbunching instability in the linac of a soft X-ray FEL Facility

The development of the microbunching instability is studied for the linac of the proposed Shanghai Soft X-ray Free-Electron-Laser facility (SXFEL) by analytic formulae as well as numerical simulations with the aid of two different codes. The process is investigated in detail and the growth rates (gains) of the instability under various conditions are compared. The results indicate that the limitations from numerical computations in the present simulation model must be taken into account. Moreover, the appearance of higher-order mode excitations in the simulations suggests that further improvement of the current theory is necessary. A mechanism of introducing shot noise into beam profile as the beam passes through a chicane is proposed. The key issues that drive the instability are analyzed.

Dissipation effect in the double-well Bose-Einstein Condensate

Dynamics of the double-well Bose-Einstein condensate subject to energy dissipation is studied by solving a reduced one-dimensional time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation numerically. We first reproduce the phase space diagram of the system without dissipation systematically, and then calculate evolutionary trajectories of dissipated systems. It is clearly shown that the dissipation can drive the system to evolve gradually from the $π$-mode quantum macroscopic self-trapping state, a state with relatively higher energy, to the lowest energy stationary state in which particles distribute equally in the two wells. The average phase and phase distribution in each well are discussed as well. We show that the phase distribution varies slowly in each well but may exhibit abrupt changes near the barrier. This sudden change occurs at the minimum position in particle density profile. We also note that the average phase in each well varies much faster with time than the phase difference between two wells.

Magnetic properties of charged spin-1 Bose gases with ferromagnetic coupling

Magnetic properties of a charged spin-1 Bose gas with ferromagnetic interactions is investigated within mean-field theory. It is shown that a competition between paramagnetism, diamagnetism and ferromagnetism exists in this system. It is shown that diamagnetism, being concerned with spontaneous magnetization, cannot exceed ferromagnetism in very weak magnetic field. The critical value of reduced ferromagnetic coupling of paramagnetic phase to ferromagnetic phase transition $\bar I_{c}$ increases with increasing temperature. The Lande-factor $g$ is introduced to describe the strength of paramagnetic effect which comes from the spin degree of freedom. The magnetization density $\bar M$ increases monotonically with $g$ for fixed reduced ferromagnetic coupling $\bar I$ as $\bar I>\bar I_{c}$. In a weak magnetic field, ferromagnetism makes immense contribution to the magnetization density. While at a high magnetic field, the diamagnetism inclines to saturate. Evidence for condensation can be seen in the magnetization density at weak magnetic field.

The system is described by the frustrated XY model and the critical temperature is calculated though the absence of central peak of the wave function in momentum space, which can be directly measured by the time-of-flight absorbing imaging in cold atoms experiments. Dynamics of Two-Component Bose-Einstein Condensates Coupled with Environment

We investigate the dynamics of an open Bose-Einstein condensate system consisting of two hyperfine states of the same atomic species which are coupled by tunable Raman laser. It is already suggested that the detuning between the laser frequency and transition frequency affect significantly on the dynamics of the pure condensate. Here we show that the detuning effect is suppressed by noise and dissipation caused by the environment. The increase of coherence and purity are also displayed for specific parameters. As a verification to the lowest-order approximation we derive the hierarchy of motion equations in the second-order approximation. It turns out that the former one can describe the dynamical evolution qualitatively for weak noise and dissipation and quantitatively for strong noise and dissipation.

Spontaneous separation of two-component Fermi gases in a double-well trap

The two-component Fermi gas in a double-well trap is studied using the density functional theory and the density profile of each component is calculated within the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We show that the two components are spatially separate in the two wells once the repulsive interaction exceeds the Stoner point, signaling the occurrence of the ferromagnetic transition. Therefore, the double-well trap helps to explore itinerant ferromagnetism in atomic Fermi gases, since the spontaneous separation can be examined by measuring component populations in one well.

The QE numerical simulation of PEA semiconductor photocathode

Several kinds of models have already been proposed for explaining the photoemission process. The exact photoemission theory of semiconductor photocathode was not well established after decades of research. In this paper an integral equation of quantum efficiency (QE) is constructed to describe the photoemission of positive electron affinity (PEA) semiconductor photocathode based on three-step photoemission model. The influences of forbidden gap, electron affinity, photon energy, incident angle, degree of polarization, refractive index, extinction coefficient, initial/final electron energy, relaxation time and external electric field on the QE of PEA semiconductor photocathode are taken into account. In addition, a computer code is also programmed to calculate the QE of K2CsSb photocathode theoretically at 532nm wavelength, the result is in line with the experimental value by and large. What are the reasons caused to the distinction between the experimental measuring and theoretical QE are discussed.

Competition between paramagnetism and diamagnetism in charged Fermi gases

The charged Fermi gas with a small Lande-factor $g$ is expected to be diamagnetic, while that with a larger $g$ could be paramagnetic. We calculate the critical value of the $g$-factor which separates the dia- and para-magnetic regions. In the weak-field limit, $g_{c}$ has the same value both at high and low temperatures, $g_{c}=1/\sqrt{12}$. Nevertheless, $g_{c}$ increases with the temperature reducing in finite magnetic fields. We also compare the $g_{c}$ value of Fermi gases with those of Boltzmann and Bose gases, supposing the particle has three Zeeman levels $σ=\pm1, 0$, and find that $g_{c}$ of Bose and Fermi gases is larger and smaller than that of Boltzmann gases, respectively.

Diamagnetism versus Paramagnetism in charged spin-1 Bose gases

It has been suggested that either diamagnetism or paramagnetism of Bose gases, due to the charge or spin degrees of freedom respectively, appears solely to be extraordinarily strong. We investigate magnetic properties of charged spin-1 Bose gases in external magnetic field, focusing on the competition between the diamagnetism and paramagnetism, using the Lande-factor $g$ of particles to evaluate the strength of paramagnetic effect. We propose that a gas with $g<{1/\sqrt{8}}$ exhibits diamagnetism at all temperatures, while a gas with $g>{1/2}$ always exhibits paramagnetism. Moreover, a gas with the Lande-factor in between shows a shift from paramagnetism to diamagnetism as the temperature decreases. The paramagnetic and diamagnetic contributions to the total magnetization density are also calculated in order to demonstrate some details of the competition.

Thermodynamics of rotating Bose gases in a trap

Novel ground state properties of rotating Bose gases have been intensively studied in the context of neutral cold atoms. We investigate the rotating Bose gas in a trap from a thermodynamic perspective, taking the charged ideal Bose gas in magnetic field (which is equivalent to a neutral gas in a synthetic magnetic field) as an example. It is indicated that the Bose-Einstein condensation temperature is irrelevant to the magnetic field, conflicting with established intuition that the critical temperature decreases with the field increasing. The specific heat and Landau diamagnetization also exhibit intriguing behaviors. In contrast, we demonstrate that the condensation temperature for neutral Bose gases in a rotating frame drops to zero in the fast rotation limit, signaling a non-condensed quantum phase in the ground state.

Enhancement of ferromagnetism by p-wave Cooper pairing in superconducting ferromagnets

In superconducting ferromagnets for which the Curie temperature $T_{m}$ exceeds the superconducting transition temperature $T_{c}$, it was suggested that ferromagnetic spin fluctuations could lead to superconductivity with p-wave spin triplet Cooper pairing. Using the Stoner model of itinerant ferromagnetism, we study the feedback effect of the p-wave superconductivity on the ferromagnetism. Below $T_{c}$, the ferromagnetism is enhanced by the p-wave superconductivity. At zero temperature, the critical Stoner value for itinerant ferromagnetism is reduced by the strength of the p-wave pairing potential, and the magnetization increases correspondingly. More important, our results suggest that once Stoner ferromagnetism is established, $T_m$ is unlikely to ever be below $T_c$. For strong and weak ferromagnetism, three and two peaks in the temperature dependence of the specific heat are respectively predicted, the upper peak in the latter case corresponding to a first-order transition.

Phase-imprint induced domain formations and spin dynamics in spinor condensates

We demonstrate that certain domain structures can be created both in ferro- and antiferro-magnetic spinor condensates if the initial phase is spatially modulated. Meanwhile, spin dynamics of the condensate with modulated phases exhibits exotic features in comparison with those of a condensate with a uniform phase. We expect that these phenomena could be observed experimentally using a phase-imprinting method.

Reentrance of Bose-Einstein condensation in spinor atomic gases in magnetic field

We calculate the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) temperature of spin-1 atomic bosons in external magnetic field, taking into account the influence of the quadratic Zeeman effect. In case that the quadratic Zeeman coefficient is positive, the BEC temperature exhibits a nontrivial dependance on the magnetic field and a magnetic-field-induced reentrant phenomenon of BEC is observed. This phenomenon could be well understood by the competition between the linear and quadratic Zeeman effects. Reentrance of BEC in a trapped spinor Bose gas is also discussed.

Ferromagnetic phase transition in spinor Bose gases

The achievement in cooling alkali atomic gases, such as $^{87}$Rb, $^{23}$Na and $^{7}$Li, to quantum degeneracy opens up a way to study magnetism in spinor bosons, because these constituent atoms usually have a hyperfine spin degree of freedom. This article reviews several basic problems related to the ferromagnetic phase transition in spinor atomic Bose gases from a theoretical perspective. After a brief discussion on various possible origins of the ferromagnetic interaction, the phase diagram of the ferromagnetically coupled spinor bosons is investigated. It is found that the ferromagnetic transition occurs always above Bose-Einstein condensation and the Bose condensate is fully polarized. The low-lying collective excitations of the spinor condensate, including spin and density modes, are discussed. The spectrum of the density mode is of the Bogliubov form and the spin wave spectrum has a $k^2$-formed dispersion relation at long wavelengths. The spin-wave stiffness coefficient contains contribut
