On a three-dimensional free boundary problem modeling electrostatic mems

We consider the dynamics of an electrostatically actuated thin elastic plate being clamped at its boundary above a rigid plate. The model includes the harmonic electrostatic potential in the three-dimensional time-varying region between the plates along with a fourth-order semilinear parabolic equation for the elastic plate deflection which is coupled to the square of the gradient trace of the electrostatic potential on this plate. The strength of the coupling is tuned by a parameter $λ$ proportional to the square of the applied voltage. We prove that this free boundary problem is locally well-posed in time and that for small values of $λ$ solutions exist globally in time. We also derive the existence of a branch of asymptotically stable stationary solutions for small values of $λ$ and non-existence of stationary solutions for large values thereof, the latter being restricted to a disc-shaped plate.

A variational approach to a stationary free boundary problem modeling MEMS

A variational approach is employed to find stationary solutions to a free boundary problem modeling an idealized electrostatically actuated MEMS device made of an elastic plate coated with a thin dielectric film and suspended above a rigid ground plate. The model couples a non-local fourth-order equation for the elastic plate deflection to the harmonic electrostatic potential in the free domain between the elastic and the ground plate. The corresponding energy is non-coercive reflecting an inherent singularity related to a possible touchdown of the elastic plate. Stationary solutions are constructed using a constrained minimization problem. A by-product is the existence of at least two stationary solutions for some values of the applied voltage.

Absence of gelation and self-similar behavior for a coagulation-fragmentation equation

The dynamics of a coagulation-fragmentation equation with multiplicative coagulation kernel and critical singular fragmentation is studied. In contrast to the coagulation equation, it is proved that fragmentation prevents the occurrence of the gelation phenomenon and a mass-conserving solution is constructed. The large time behavior of this solution is shown to be described by a self-similar solution. In addition, the second moment is finite for positive times whatever its initial value. The proof relies on the Laplace transform which maps the original equation to a first-order nonlinear hyperbolic equation with a singular source term. A precise study of this equation is then performed with the method of characteristics.

Bounded traveling waves for a thin film with gravity and insoluble surfactant

Lubrication equations for a surfactant-driven flow of a thin layer of fluid are considered with a singular surfactant-dependent surface tension. It is shown that there exists a bounded traveling wave solution which connects a fully surfactant-coated film to an uncoated film. The regularity of the traveling wave depends on whether or not surface diffusion of the insoluble surfactant is included.

Large time behavior for the fast diffusion equation with critical absorption

We study the large time behavior of nonnegative solutions to the Cauchy problem for a fast diffusion equation with critical zero order absorption $$ \partial_{t}u-Δu^m+u^q=0 \quad \quad \hbox{in} \ (0,\infty)\times\real^N\, $$ with $m_c:=(N-2)_{+}/N < m < 1$ and $q=m+2/N$. Given an initial condition $u_0$ decaying arbitrarily fast at infinity, we show that the asymptotic behavior of the corresponding solution $u$ is given by a Barenblatt profile with a logarithmic scaling, thereby extending a previous result requiring a specific algebraic lower bound on $u_0$. A by-product of our analysis is the derivation of sharp gradient estimates and a universal lower bound, which have their own interest and hold true for general exponents $q > 1$.

Self-similarity in a thin film Muskat problem

The large time behavior of non-negative weak solutions to a thin film approximation of the two-phase Muskat problem is studied. A classification of self-similar solutions is first provided: there is always a unique even self-similar solution while a continuum of non-symmetric self-similar solutions exist for certain fluid configurations. Despite this non-uniqueness, convergence of all non-negative weak solutions towards a self-similar solution is proved.

The time singular limit for a fourth-order damped wave equation for MEMS

We consider a free boundary problem modeling electrostatic microelectromechanical systems. The model consists of a fourth-order damped wave equation for the elastic plate displacement which is coupled to an elliptic equation for the electrostatic potential. We first review some recent results on existence and non-existence of steady-states as well as on local and global well-posedness of the dynamical problem, the main focus being on the possible touchdown behavior of the elastic plate. We then investigate the behavior of the solutions in the time singular limit when the ratio between inertial and damping effects tends to zero.

A free boundary problem modeling electrostatic MEMS: I. Linear bending effects

The dynamical and stationary behaviors of a fourth-order evolution equation with clamped boundary conditions and a singular nonlocal reaction term, which is coupled to an elliptic free boundary problem on a non-smooth domain, are investigated. The equation arises in the modeling of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and includes two positive parameters $λ$ and $\varepsilon$ related to the applied voltage and the aspect ratio of the device, respectively. Local and global well-posedness results are obtained for the corresponding hyperbolic and parabolic evolution problems as well as a criterion for global existence excluding the occurrence of finite time singularities which are not physically relevant. Existence of a stable steady state is shown for sufficiently small $λ$. Non-existence of steady states is also established when $\varepsilon$ is small enough and $λ$ is large enough (depending on $\varepsilon$).

A free boundary problem modeling electrostatic MEMS: II. nonlinear bending effects

Well-posedness of a free boundary problem for electrostatic microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) is investigated when nonlinear bending effects are taken into account. The model describes the evolution of the deflection of an electrically conductive elastic membrane suspended above a fixed ground plate together with the electrostatic potential in the free domain between the membrane and the fixed ground plate. The electrostatic potential is harmonic in that domain and its values are held fixed along the membrane and the ground plate. The equation for the membrane deflection is a parabolic quasilinear fourth-order equation, which is coupled to the gradient trace of the electrostatic potential on the membrane.

Dynamics of a free boundary problem with curvature modeling electrostatic MEMS

The dynamics of a free boundary problem for electrostatically actuated microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) is investigated. The model couples the electric potential to the deformation of the membrane, the deflection of the membrane being caused by application of a voltage difference across the device. More precisely, the electrostatic potential is a harmonic function in the angular domain that is partly bounded by the deformable membrane. The gradient trace of the electric potential on this free boundary part acts as a source term in the governing equation for the membrane deformation. The main feature of the model considered herein is that, unlike most previous research, the small deformation assumption is dropped, and curvature for the deformation of the membrane is taken into account what leads to a quasilinear parabolic equation. The free boundary problem is shown to be well-posed, locally in time for arbitrary voltage values and globally in time for small voltages values. Furthermore, existence of asymptotically stable steady-state configurations is proved in case of small voltage values as well as non-existence of steady-states if the applied voltage difference is large. Finally, convergence of solutions of the free boundary problem to the solutions of the well-established small aspect ratio model is shown.

Sign-Preserving Property for Some Fourth-Order Elliptic Operators in One Dimension and Radial Symmetry

For a class of one-dimensional linear elliptic fourth-order equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions it is shown that a non-positive and non-vanishing right-hand side gives rise to a negative solution. A similar result is obtained for the same class of equations for radially symmetric solutions in a ball or in an annulus. Several applications are given, including applications to nonlinear equations and eigenvalue problems.

A parabolic free boundary problem modeling electrostatic MEMS

The evolution problem for a membrane based model of an electrostatically actuated microelectromechanical system (MEMS) is studied. The model describes the dynamics of the membrane displacement and the electric potential. The latter is a harmonic function in an angular domain, the deformable membrane being a part of the boundary. The former solves a heat equation with a right hand side that depends on the square of the trace of the gradient of the electric potential on the membrane. The resulting free boundary problem is shown to be well-posed locally in time. Furthermore, solutions corresponding to small voltage values exist globally in time while global existence is shown not to hold for high voltage values. It is also proven that, for small voltage values, there is an asymptotically stable steady-state solution. Finally, the small aspect ratio limit is rigorously justified.

A phase-field approximation of the Willmore flow with volume and area constraints

The well-posedness of a phase-field approximation to the Willmore flow with area and volume constraints is established when the functional approximating the area has no critical point satisfying the two constraints. The existence proof relies on the underlying gradient flow structure of the problem: the time discrete approximation is solved by a variational minimization principle. The main difficulty stems from the nonlinearity of the area constraint.

A thin film approximation of the Muskat problem with gravity and capillary forces

Existence of nonnegative weak solutions is shown for a thin film approximation of the Muskat problem with gravity and capillary forces taken into account. The model describes the space-time evolution of the heights of the two fluid layers and is a fully coupled system of two fourth order degenerate parabolic equations. The existence proof relies on the fact that this system can be viewed as a gradient flow for the 2-Wasserstein distance in the space of probability measures with finite second moment.

Eternal solutions to a singular diffusion equation with critical gradient absorption

The existence of nonnegative radially symmetric eternal solutions of exponential self-similar type $u(t,x)=e^{-pβt/(2-p)} f_β(|x|e^{-βt};β)$ is investigated for the singular diffusion equation with critical gradient absorption \partial_{t} u-Δ_{p} u+|\nabla u|^{p/2}=0 \quad \;\;\hbox{in}\;\; (0,\infty)\times\real^N where $2N/(N+1) < p < 2$. Such solutions are shown to exist only if the parameter $β$ ranges in a bounded interval $(0,β_*]$ which is in sharp contrast with well-known singular diffusion equations such as $\partial_{t}ϕ-Δ_{p} ϕ=0$ when $p=2N/(N+1)$ or the porous medium equation $\partial_{t}ϕ-Δϕ^m=0$ when $m=(N-2)/N$. Moreover, the profile $f(r;β)$ decays to zero as $r\to\infty$ in a faster way for $β=β_*$ than for $β\in (0,β_*)$ but the algebraic leading order is the same in both cases. In fact, for large $r$, $f(r;β_*)$ decays as $r^{-p/(2-p)}$ while $f(r;β)$ behaves as $(\log r)^{2/(2-p)} r^{-p/(2-p)}$ when $β\in (0,β_*)$.

A gradient flow approach to a thin film approximation of the Muskat problem

A fully coupled system of two second-order parabolic degenerate equations arising as a thin film approximation to the Muskat problem is interpreted as a gradient flow for the 2-Wasserstein distance in the space of probability measures with finite second moment. A variational scheme is then set up and is the starting point of the construction of weak solutions. The availability of two Liapunov functionals turns out to be a central tool to obtain the needed regularity to identify the Euler-Lagrange equation in the variational scheme.

A stationary free boundary problem modeling electrostatic MEMS

A free boundary problem describing small deformations in a membrane based model of electrostatically actuated MEMS is investigated. The existence of stationary solutions is established for small voltage values. A justification of the widely studied narrow-gap model is given by showing that steady state solutions of the free boundary problem converge toward stationary solutions of the narrow-gap model when the aspect ratio of the device tends to zero.

Positivity, decay, and extinction for a singular diffusion equation with gradient absorption

We study qualitative properties of non-negative solutions to the Cauchy problem for the fast diffusion equation with gradient absorption \partial_t u -Δ_{p}u+|\nabla u|^{q}=0\quad in\;\; (0,\infty)\times\RR^N, where $N\ge 1$, $p\in(1,2)$, and $q>0$. Based on gradient estimates for the solutions, we classify the behavior of the solutions for large times, obtaining either positivity as $t\to\infty$ for $q>p-N/(N+1)$, optimal decay estimates as $t\to\infty$ for $p/2\le q\le p-N/(N+1)$, or extinction in finite time for $0 < q < p/2$. In addition, we show how the diffusion prevents extinction in finite time in some ranges of exponents where extinction occurs for the non-diffusive Hamilton-Jacobi equation.

Weak solutions to a thin film model with capillary effects and insoluble surfactant

The paper focuses on a model describing the spreading of an insoluble surfactant on a thin viscous film with capillary effects taken into account. The governing equation for the film height is degenerate parabolic of fourth order and coupled to a second order parabolic equation for the surfactant concentration. It is shown that nonnegative weak solutions exist under natural assumptions on the surface tension coefficient.

Weak solutions to the continuous coagulation equation with multiple fragmentation

The existence of weak solutions to the continuous coagulation equation with multiple fragmentation is shown for a class of unbounded coagulation and fragmentation kernels, the fragmentation kernel having possibly a singularity at the origin. This result extends previous ones where either boundedness of the coagulation kernel or no singularity at the origin for the fragmentation kernel were assumed.

Convergence to separate variables solutions for a degenerate parabolic equation with gradient source

The large time behaviour of nonnegative solutions to a quasilinear degenerate diffusion equation with a source term depending solely on the gradient is investigated. After a suitable rescaling of time, convergence to a unique profile is shown for global solutions. The proof relies on the half-relaxed limits technique within the theory of viscosity solutions and on the construction of suitable supersolutions and barrier functions to obtain optimal temporal decay rates and boundary estimates. Blowup of weak solutions is also studied.

Global-in-time solutions for the isothermal Matovich-Pearson equations

In this paper we study the Matovich-Pearson equations describing the process of glass fiber drawing. These equations may be viewed as a 1D-reduction of the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations including free boundary, valid for the drawing of a long and thin glass fiber. We concentrate on the isothermal case without surface tension. Then the Matovich-Pearson equations represent a nonlinearly coupled system of an elliptic equation for the axial velocity and a hyperbolic transport equation for the fluid cross-sectional area. We first prove existence of a local solution, and, after constructing appropriate barrier functions, we deduce that the fluid radius is always strictly positive and that the local solution remains in the same regularity class. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first global existence and uniqueness result for this important system of equations.

Refined asymptotics for the infinite heat equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions

The nonnegative viscosity solutions to the infinite heat equation with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions are shown to converge as time increases to infinity to a uniquely determined limit after a suitable time rescaling. The proof relies on the half-relaxed limits technique as well as interior positivity estimates and boundary estimates. The expansion of the support is also studied.

Weak solutions to lubrication equations in the presence of strong slippage

The existence of global weak solutions is proved for one-dimensional lubrication models that describe the dewetting process of nanoscopic thin polymer films on hydrophobyzed substrates and take account of large slippage at the polymer-substrate interface. The convergence of these solutions as either the Reynolds number or the capillarity goes to zero, as well as their limiting behaviour as the slip length goes to zero or infinity are investigated.

A stochastic min-driven coalescence process and its hydrodynamical limit

A stochastic system of particles is considered in which the sizes of the particles increase by successive binary mergers with the constraint that each coagulation event involves a particle with minimal size. Convergence of a suitably renormalised version of this process to a deterministic hydrodynamical limit is shown and the time evolution of the minimal size is studied for both deterministic and stochastic models.

Finite mass self-similar blowing-up solutions of a chemotaxis system with non-linear diffusion

For a specific choice of the diffusion, the parabolic-elliptic Patlak-Keller-Segel system with non-linear diffusion (also referred to as the quasi-linear Smoluchowski-Poisson equation) exhibits an interesting threshold phenomenon: there is a critical mass $M_c>0$ such that all the solutions with initial data of mass smaller or equal to $M_c$ exist globally while the solution blows up in finite time for a large class of initial data with mass greater than $M_c$. Unlike in space dimension 2, finite mass self-similar blowing-up solutions are shown to exist in space dimension $d?3$.
