A direct construction of a full family of Whitham solitary waves

Starting with the periodic waves earlier constructed for the gravity Whitham equation, we parameterise the solution curves through relative wave height, and use a limiting argument to obtain a full family of solitary waves. The resulting branch starts from the zero solution, traverses unique points in the wave speed-wave height space, and reaches a singular highest wave at $φ(0) = \fracμ{2}$. The construction is based on uniform estimates improved from earlier work on periodic waves for the same equation, together with limiting arguments and a Galilean transform to exclude vanishing waves and waves levelling off at negative surface depth. In fact, the periodic waves can be proved to converge locally uniformly to a wave with negative tails, which is then transformed to the desired branch of solutions. The paper also contains some proof concerning uniqueness and continuity for signed solutions (improved touching lemma).

Properties of the Semigroup in $L_1$ Associated with Age-Structured Diffusive Populations

The linear semigroup associated with age-structured diffusive populations is investigated in the $L_1$-setting. A complete determination of its generator is given along with detailed spectral information that imply, in particular, an asynchronous exponential growth of the semigroup. Moreover, regularizing effects inherited from the diffusion part are exploited to derive additional properties of the semigroup.

The nonlocal mean curvature flow of periodic graphs

We establish the well-posedness of the nonlocal mean curvature flow of order ${α\in(0,1)}$ for periodic graphs on $\mathbb{R}^n$ in all subcritical little Hölder spaces ${\rm h}^{1+β}(\mathbb{T}^n)$ with $β\in(0,1)$. Furthermore, we prove that if the solution is initially sufficiently close to its integral mean in ${\rm h}^{1+β}(\mathbb{T}^n)$, then it exists globally in time and converges exponentially fast towards a constant. The proofs rely on the reformulation of the equation as a quasilinear evolution problem, which is shown to be of parabolic type by a direct localization approach, and on abstract parabolic theories for such problems.

The Principle of Linearized Stability in Age-Structured Diffusive Populations

The principle of linearized stability is established for age-structured diffusive populations incorporating nonlinear death and birth processes. More precisely, asymptotic exponential stability is shown for equilibria for which the semigroup associated with the linearization at the equiblibrium has a negative growth bound. The result is derived in an abstract framework and applied in concrete situations.

Energy minimizers for an asymptotic MEMS model with heterogeneous dielectric properties

A model for a MEMS device, consisting of a fixed bottom plate and an elastic plate, is studied. It was derived in a previous work as a reinforced limit when the thickness of the insulating layer covering the bottom plate tends to zero. This asymptotic model inherits the dielectric properties of the insulating layer. It involves the electrostatic potential in the device and the deformation of the elastic plate defining the geometry of the device. The electrostatic potential is given by an elliptic equation with mixed boundary conditions in the possibly non-Lipschitz region between the two plates. The deformation of the elastic plate is supposed to be a critical point of an energy functional which, in turn, depends on the electrostatic potential due to the force exerted by the latter on the elastic plate. The energy functional is shown to have a minimizer giving the geometry of the device. Moreover, the corresponding Euler-Lagrange equation is computed and the maximal regularity of the electrostatic potential is established.

Shape derivative of the Dirichlet energy for a transmission problem

For a transmission problem in a truncated two-dimensional cylinder located beneath the graph of a function u, the shape derivative of the Dirichlet energy (with respect to u) is shown to be well-defined and is computed. The main difficulties in this context arise from the weak regularity of the domain and the possible non-empty intersection of the graph of u and the transmission interface. The result is applied to establish the existence of a solution to a free boundary transmission problem for an electrostatic actuator.

Stationary solutions to a nonlocal fourth-order elliptic obstacle problem

Existence of stationary solutions to a nonlocal fourth-order elliptic obstacle problem arising from the modelling of microelectromechanical systems with heterogeneous dielectric properties is shown. The underlying variational structure of the model is exploited to construct these solutions as minimizers of a suitably regularized energy, which allows us to weaken considerably the assumptions on the model used in a previous article.

Finite time singularity in a MEMS model revisited

A free boundary problem modeling a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) consisting of a fixed ground plate and a deformable top plate is considered, the plates being held at different electrostatic potentials. It couples a second order semilinear parabolic equation for the deformation of the top plate to a Laplace equation for the electrostatic potential in the device. The validity of the model is expected to break down in finite time when the applied voltage exceeds a certain value, a finite time singularity occurring then. This result, already known for non-positive initial configurations of the top plate, is here proved for arbitrary ones and thus now includes, in particular, snap-through instabilities.

Vanishing aspect ratio limit for a fourth-order mems model

So far most studies on mathematical models for microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) are focused on the so-called small aspect ratio model which is a wave or beam equation with a singular source term. It is formally derived by setting the aspect ratio equal to zero in a more complex model involving a moving boundary. A rigorous justification of this derivation is provided here when bending is taken into account.

On a three-dimensional free boundary problem modeling electrostatic mems

We consider the dynamics of an electrostatically actuated thin elastic plate being clamped at its boundary above a rigid plate. The model includes the harmonic electrostatic potential in the three-dimensional time-varying region between the plates along with a fourth-order semilinear parabolic equation for the elastic plate deflection which is coupled to the square of the gradient trace of the electrostatic potential on this plate. The strength of the coupling is tuned by a parameter $λ$ proportional to the square of the applied voltage. We prove that this free boundary problem is locally well-posed in time and that for small values of $λ$ solutions exist globally in time. We also derive the existence of a branch of asymptotically stable stationary solutions for small values of $λ$ and non-existence of stationary solutions for large values thereof, the latter being restricted to a disc-shaped plate.

A variational approach to a stationary free boundary problem modeling MEMS

A variational approach is employed to find stationary solutions to a free boundary problem modeling an idealized electrostatically actuated MEMS device made of an elastic plate coated with a thin dielectric film and suspended above a rigid ground plate. The model couples a non-local fourth-order equation for the elastic plate deflection to the harmonic electrostatic potential in the free domain between the elastic and the ground plate. The corresponding energy is non-coercive reflecting an inherent singularity related to a possible touchdown of the elastic plate. Stationary solutions are constructed using a constrained minimization problem. A by-product is the existence of at least two stationary solutions for some values of the applied voltage.

Bounded traveling waves for a thin film with gravity and insoluble surfactant

Lubrication equations for a surfactant-driven flow of a thin layer of fluid are considered with a singular surfactant-dependent surface tension. It is shown that there exists a bounded traveling wave solution which connects a fully surfactant-coated film to an uncoated film. The regularity of the traveling wave depends on whether or not surface diffusion of the insoluble surfactant is included.

The time singular limit for a fourth-order damped wave equation for MEMS

We consider a free boundary problem modeling electrostatic microelectromechanical systems. The model consists of a fourth-order damped wave equation for the elastic plate displacement which is coupled to an elliptic equation for the electrostatic potential. We first review some recent results on existence and non-existence of steady-states as well as on local and global well-posedness of the dynamical problem, the main focus being on the possible touchdown behavior of the elastic plate. We then investigate the behavior of the solutions in the time singular limit when the ratio between inertial and damping effects tends to zero.

A free boundary problem modeling electrostatic MEMS: I. Linear bending effects

The dynamical and stationary behaviors of a fourth-order evolution equation with clamped boundary conditions and a singular nonlocal reaction term, which is coupled to an elliptic free boundary problem on a non-smooth domain, are investigated. The equation arises in the modeling of microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) and includes two positive parameters $λ$ and $\varepsilon$ related to the applied voltage and the aspect ratio of the device, respectively. Local and global well-posedness results are obtained for the corresponding hyperbolic and parabolic evolution problems as well as a criterion for global existence excluding the occurrence of finite time singularities which are not physically relevant. Existence of a stable steady state is shown for sufficiently small $λ$. Non-existence of steady states is also established when $\varepsilon$ is small enough and $λ$ is large enough (depending on $\varepsilon$).

A free boundary problem modeling electrostatic MEMS: II. nonlinear bending effects

Well-posedness of a free boundary problem for electrostatic microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) is investigated when nonlinear bending effects are taken into account. The model describes the evolution of the deflection of an electrically conductive elastic membrane suspended above a fixed ground plate together with the electrostatic potential in the free domain between the membrane and the fixed ground plate. The electrostatic potential is harmonic in that domain and its values are held fixed along the membrane and the ground plate. The equation for the membrane deflection is a parabolic quasilinear fourth-order equation, which is coupled to the gradient trace of the electrostatic potential on the membrane.

Dynamics of a free boundary problem with curvature modeling electrostatic MEMS

The dynamics of a free boundary problem for electrostatically actuated microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) is investigated. The model couples the electric potential to the deformation of the membrane, the deflection of the membrane being caused by application of a voltage difference across the device. More precisely, the electrostatic potential is a harmonic function in the angular domain that is partly bounded by the deformable membrane. The gradient trace of the electric potential on this free boundary part acts as a source term in the governing equation for the membrane deformation. The main feature of the model considered herein is that, unlike most previous research, the small deformation assumption is dropped, and curvature for the deformation of the membrane is taken into account what leads to a quasilinear parabolic equation. The free boundary problem is shown to be well-posed, locally in time for arbitrary voltage values and globally in time for small voltages values. Furthermore, existence of asymptotically stable steady-state configurations is proved in case of small voltage values as well as non-existence of steady-states if the applied voltage difference is large. Finally, convergence of solutions of the free boundary problem to the solutions of the well-established small aspect ratio model is shown.

Sign-Preserving Property for Some Fourth-Order Elliptic Operators in One Dimension and Radial Symmetry

For a class of one-dimensional linear elliptic fourth-order equations with homogeneous Dirichlet boundary conditions it is shown that a non-positive and non-vanishing right-hand side gives rise to a negative solution. A similar result is obtained for the same class of equations for radially symmetric solutions in a ball or in an annulus. Several applications are given, including applications to nonlinear equations and eigenvalue problems.

A parabolic free boundary problem modeling electrostatic MEMS

The evolution problem for a membrane based model of an electrostatically actuated microelectromechanical system (MEMS) is studied. The model describes the dynamics of the membrane displacement and the electric potential. The latter is a harmonic function in an angular domain, the deformable membrane being a part of the boundary. The former solves a heat equation with a right hand side that depends on the square of the trace of the gradient of the electric potential on the membrane. The resulting free boundary problem is shown to be well-posed locally in time. Furthermore, solutions corresponding to small voltage values exist globally in time while global existence is shown not to hold for high voltage values. It is also proven that, for small voltage values, there is an asymptotically stable steady-state solution. Finally, the small aspect ratio limit is rigorously justified.

A stationary free boundary problem modeling electrostatic MEMS

A free boundary problem describing small deformations in a membrane based model of electrostatically actuated MEMS is investigated. The existence of stationary solutions is established for small voltage values. A justification of the widely studied narrow-gap model is given by showing that steady state solutions of the free boundary problem converge toward stationary solutions of the narrow-gap model when the aspect ratio of the device tends to zero.

Weak solutions to a thin film model with capillary effects and insoluble surfactant

The paper focuses on a model describing the spreading of an insoluble surfactant on a thin viscous film with capillary effects taken into account. The governing equation for the film height is degenerate parabolic of fourth order and coupled to a second order parabolic equation for the surfactant concentration. It is shown that nonnegative weak solutions exist under natural assumptions on the surface tension coefficient.

On Positive Solutions of Some System of Reaction-Diffusion Equations with Nonlocal Initial Conditions

The paper focuses on positive solutions to a coupled system of parabolic equations with nonlocal initial conditions. Such equations arise as steady-state equations in an age-structured predator-prey model with diffusion. By using global bifurcation techniques, we describe the structure of the set of positive solutions with respect to two parameters measuring the intensities of the fertility of the species. In particular, we establish co-existence steady-states, i.e. solutions which are nonnegative and nontrivial in both components.

Positive solutions of some parabolic system with cross-diffusion and nonlocal initial conditions

The paper is concerned with a system consisting of two coupled nonlinear parabolic equations with a cross-diffusion term, where the solutions at positive times define the initial states. The equations arise as steady state equations of an age-structured predator-prey system with spatial dispersion. Based on unilateral global bifurcation methods for Fredholm operators and on maximal regularity for parabolic equations, global bifurcation of positive solutions is derived.

Thin Film Equations with Soluble Surfactant and Gravity: Modeling and Stability of Steady States

A thin film on a horizontal solid substrate and coated with a soluble surfactant is considered. The governing degenerate parabolic equations for the film height and the surfactant concentrations on the surface and in the bulk are derived using a lubrication approximation when gravity is taken into account. It is shown that the steady states are asymptotically stable.
