Bounded Weak Solutions to a Class of Degenerate Cross-Diffusion Systems

Bounded weak solutions are constructed for a degenerate parabolic system with a full diffusion matrix, which is a generalized version of the thin film Muskat system. Boundedness is achieved with the help of a sequence $(\mathcal{E}_n)_{n\ge 2}$ of Liapunov functionals such that $\mathcal{E}_n$ is equivalent to the $L_n$-norm for each $n \ge 2$ and $\mathcal{E}_n^{1/n}$ controls the $L_\infty$-norm in the limit $n\to\infty$. Weak solutions are built by a compactness approach, special care being needed in the construction of the approximation in order to preserve the availability of the above-mentioned Liapunov functionals.

The multiphase Muskat problem with general viscosities in two dimensions

In this paper we study the two-dimensional multiphase Muskat problem describing the motion of three immiscible fluids with general viscosities in a vertical homogeneous porous medium under the influence of gravity. Employing Rellich type identities in the regime where the fluids are ordered according to their viscosities, respectively a Neumann series argument when the fluids are not ordered by viscosity, we may recast the governing equations as a strongly coupled nonlinear and nonlocal evolution problem for the functions that parameterize the sharp interfaces that separate the fluids. This problem is of parabolic type if the Rayleigh-Taylor condition is satisfied at each interface. Based on this property, we then show that the multiphase Muskat problem is well-posed in all $L_2$-subcritical Sobolev spaces and that it features some parabolic smoothing properties.

The nonlocal mean curvature flow of periodic graphs

We establish the well-posedness of the nonlocal mean curvature flow of order ${α\in(0,1)}$ for periodic graphs on $\mathbb{R}^n$ in all subcritical little Hölder spaces ${\rm h}^{1+β}(\mathbb{T}^n)$ with $β\in(0,1)$. Furthermore, we prove that if the solution is initially sufficiently close to its integral mean in ${\rm h}^{1+β}(\mathbb{T}^n)$, then it exists globally in time and converges exponentially fast towards a constant. The proofs rely on the reformulation of the equation as a quasilinear evolution problem, which is shown to be of parabolic type by a direct localization approach, and on abstract parabolic theories for such problems.

A characterization of the symmetric steady water waves in terms of the underlying flow

In this paper we present a characterization of the symmetric rotational periodic gravity water waves of finite depth and without stagnation points in terms of the underlying flow. Namely, we show that such a wave is symmetric and has a single crest and trough per period if and only if there exists a vertical line within the fluid domain such that all the fluid particles located on that line minimize there simultaneously their distance to the fluid bed as they move about. Our analysis uses the moving plane method, sharp elliptic maximum principles, and the principle of analytic continuation.

Self-similarity in a thin film Muskat problem

The large time behavior of non-negative weak solutions to a thin film approximation of the two-phase Muskat problem is studied. A classification of self-similar solutions is first provided: there is always a unique even self-similar solution while a continuum of non-symmetric self-similar solutions exist for certain fluid configurations. Despite this non-uniqueness, convergence of all non-negative weak solutions towards a self-similar solution is proved.

Capillary-gravity water waves with discontinuous vorticity: existence and regularity results

In this paper we construct periodic capillarity-gravity water waves with an arbitrary bounded vorticity distribution. This is achieved by reexpressing, in the height function formulation of the water wave problem, the boundary condition obtained from Bernoulli's principle as a nonlocal differential equation. This enables us to establish the existence of weak solutions of the problem by using elliptic estimates and bifurcation theory. Secondly, we investigate the a priori regularity of these weak solutions and prove that they are in fact strong solutions of the problem, describing waves with a real-analytic free surface. Moreover, assuming merely integrability of the vorticity function, we show that any weak solution corresponds to flows having real-analytic streamlines.

On the existence of steady periodic capillary-gravity stratified water waves

We prove the existence of small steady periodic capillary-gravity water waves for general stratified flows, where we allow for stagnation points in the flow. We establish the existence of both laminar and non-laminar flow solutions for the governing equations. This is achieved by using bifurcation theory and estimates based on the ellipticity of the system, where we regard, in turn, the mass-flux and surface tension as bifurcation parameters.

Steady periodic water waves with unbounded vorticity: equivalent formulations and existence results

In this paper we consider the steady water wave problem for waves that possess a merely $L_r-$integrable vorticity, with $r\in(1,\infty)$ being arbitrary. We first establish the equivalence of the three formulations--the velocity formulation, the stream function formulation, and the height function formulation-- in the setting of strong solutions, regardless of the value of $r$. Based upon this result and using a suitable notion of weak solution for the height function formulation, we then establish, by means of local bifurcation theory, the existence of small amplitude capillary and capillary-gravity water waves with a $L_r-$integrable vorticity.

Steady-state fingering patterns for a periodic Muskat problem

We study global bifurcation branches consisting of stationary solutions of the Muskat problem. It is proved that the steady-state fingering patterns blow up as the surface tension increases: we find a threshold value for the cell height with the property that below this value the fingers will touch the boundaries of the cell when the surface tension approaches a finite value from below; otherwise, the maximal slope of the fingers tends to infinity.

A thin film approximation of the Muskat problem with gravity and capillary forces

Existence of nonnegative weak solutions is shown for a thin film approximation of the Muskat problem with gravity and capillary forces taken into account. The model describes the space-time evolution of the heights of the two fluid layers and is a fully coupled system of two fourth order degenerate parabolic equations. The existence proof relies on the fact that this system can be viewed as a gradient flow for the 2-Wasserstein distance in the space of probability measures with finite second moment.

Non-negative global weak solutions for a degenerated parabolic system approximating the two-phase Stokes problem

We establish the existence of non-negative global weak solutions for a strongly couple degenerated parabolic system which was obtained as an approximation of the two-phase Stokes problem driven solely by capillary forces. Moreover, the system under consideration may be viewed as a two-phase generalization of the classical Thin Film equation.

On periodic water waves with Coriolis effects and isobaric streamlines

In this paper we prove that solutions of the f-plane approximation for equatorial geophysical deep water waves, which have the property that the pressure is constant along the streamlines and do not possess stagnation points, are Gerstner-type waves. Furthermore, for waves traveling over a flat bed, we prove that there are only laminar flow solutions with these properties.

A gradient flow approach to a thin film approximation of the Muskat problem

A fully coupled system of two second-order parabolic degenerate equations arising as a thin film approximation to the Muskat problem is interpreted as a gradient flow for the 2-Wasserstein distance in the space of probability measures with finite second moment. A variational scheme is then set up and is the starting point of the construction of weak solutions. The availability of two Liapunov functionals turns out to be a central tool to obtain the needed regularity to identify the Euler-Lagrange equation in the variational scheme.

On the parabolicity of the Muskat problem: Well-posedness, fingering, and stability results

We consider in this paper the Muskat problem in a periodic geometry and incorporate capillary as well as gravity effects in the modelling. The problem re-writes as an abstract evolution equation and we use this property to prove well-posedness of the problem and to establish exponential stability of some flat equilibrium. Using bifurcation theory we also find finger shaped steady-states which are all unstable.

A generalised Rayleigh-Taylor condition for the Muskat problem

In this paper we consider the evolution of two fluid phases in a porous medium. The fluids are separated from each other and also the wetting phase from air by interfaces which evolve in time. We reduce the problem to an abstract evolution equation. A generalised Rayleigh-Taylor condition characterizes the parabolicity regime of the problem and allows us to establish a general well-posedness result and to study stability properties of flat steady-states. When considering surface tension effects at the interface between the fluids and if the more dense fluid lies above, we find bifurcating finger-shaped equilibria which are all unstable.

Analysis of a mathematical model describing necrotic tumor growth

In this paper we study a model describing the growth of necrotic tumors in different regimes of vascularisation. The tumor consists of a necrotic core of death cells and a surrounding nonnecrotic shell. The corresponding mathematical formulation is a moving boundary problem where both boundaries delimiting the nonnecrotic shell are allowed to evolve in time.We determine all radially symmetric stationary solutions of the problem and reduce the moving boundary problem into a nonlinear evolution. Parabolic theory provides us the perfect context in order to show local well-posed of the problem for small initial data.
