Field Theory of Interacting Boundary Gravitons

Pure three-dimensional gravity is a renormalizable theory with two free parameters labelled by $G$ and $Λ$. As a consequence, correlation functions of the boundary stress tensor in AdS$_3$ are uniquely fixed in terms of one dimensionless parameter, which is the central charge of the Virasoro algebra. The same argument implies that AdS$_3$ gravity at a finite radial cutoff is a renormalizable theory, but now with one additional parameter corresponding to the cutoff location. This theory is conjecturally dual to a $T\overline{T}$-deformed CFT, assuming that such theories actually exist. To elucidate this, we study the quantum theory of boundary gravitons living on a cutoff planar boundary and the associated correlation functions of the boundary stress tensor. We compute stress tensor correlation functions to two-loop order ($G$ being the loop counting parameter), extending existing tree level results. This is made feasible by the fact that the boundary graviton action simplifies greatly upon making a judicious field redefinition, turning into the Nambu-Goto action. After imposing Lorentz invariance, the correlators at this order are found to be unambiguous up to a single undetermined renormalization parameter.

Adding Flavor to the Narain Ensemble

We revisit the proposal that the ensemble average over free boson CFTs in two dimensions - parameterized by Narain's moduli space - is dual to an exotic theory of gravity in three dimensions dubbed $U(1)$ gravity. We consider flavored partition functions, where the usual genus $g$ partition function is weighted by Wilson lines coupled to the conserved $U(1)$ currents of these theories. These flavored partition functions obey a heat equation which relates deformations of the Riemann surface moduli to those of the chemical potentials which measure these $U(1)$ charges. This allows us to derive a Siegel-Weil formula which computes the average of these flavored partition functions. The result takes the form of a "sum over geometries," albeit with modifications relative to the unflavored case.

Quantum thermalization and Virasoro symmetry

We initiate a systematic study of high energy matrix elements of local operators in 2d CFT. Knowledge of these is required in order to determine whether the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis (ETH) can hold in such theories. Most high energy states are high level Virasoro descendants, and by employing an oscillator representation of the Virasoro algebra we develop an efficient method for computing matrix elements of primary operators in such states. In parameter regimes where we expect (e.g. from AdS/CFT intuition) thermalization to occur, we observe striking patterns in the matrix elements: diagonal matrix elements are smoothly varying and off-diagonal elements, while nonzero, are power-law suppressed compared to the diagonal elements. We discuss the implications of these universal properties of 2d CFTs in regard to their compatibility with ETH.

Holographic conformal blocks from interacting Wilson lines

We present a simple prescription for computing conformal blocks and correlation functions holographically in AdS$_3$ in terms of Wilson lines merging at a bulk vertex. This is shown to reproduce global conformal blocks and heavy-light Virasoro blocks. In the case of higher spin theories the space of vertices is in one-to-one correspondence with the space of ${\cal W}_N$ conformal blocks, and we show how the latter are obtained by explicit computations.

Nature abhors a horizon

The information paradox can be resolved if we recognize that the wavefunctional in gravity $Ψ[g]$ should be considered on the {\it whole} of superspace, the space of possible $g$. The largeness of the Bekenstein entropy implies a vast space of gravitational solutions, which are conjectured to be fuzzball configurations. In the WKB approximation, the wavefunctional for a collapsing shell is oscillatory in a small region of superspace, and the classical approximation picks out this part. But the wavefunctional will be damped (`under the barrier') in the remainder of this vast superspace. We perform a simple computation to show that at the threshold of black hole formation, the barrier is lowered enough to make the latter part oscillatory; this alters the classical evolution and avoids horizon formation.

General Results for Higher Spin Wilson Lines and Entanglement in Vasiliev Theory

We develop tools for the efficient evaluation of Wilson lines in 3D higher spin gravity, and use these to compute entanglement entropy in the hs$[λ]$ Vasiliev theory that governs the bulk side of the duality proposal of Gaberdiel and Gopakumar. Our main technical advance is the determination of SL(N) Wilson lines for arbitrary $N$, which, in suitable cases, enables us to analytically continue to hs$[λ]$ via $N \rightarrow -λ$. We apply this result to compute various quantities of interest, including entanglement entropy expanded perturbatively in the background higher spin charge, chemical potential, and interval size. This includes a computation of entanglement entropy in the higher spin black hole of the Vasiliev theory. These results are consistent with conformal field theory calculations. We also provide an alternative derivation of the Wilson line, by showing how it arises naturally from earlier work on scalar correlators in higher spin theory. The general picture that emerges is consistent with the statement that the SL(N) Wilson line computes the semiclassical $W_N$ vacuum block, and our results provide an explicit result for this object.

Semiclassical Virasoro Blocks from AdS$_3$ Gravity

We present a unified framework for the holographic computation of Virasoro conformal blocks at large central charge. In particular, we provide bulk constructions that correctly reproduce all semiclassical Virasoro blocks that are known explicitly from conformal field theory computations. The results revolve around the use of geodesic Witten diagrams, recently introduced in arXiv:1508.00501, evaluated in locally AdS$_3$ geometries generated by backreaction of heavy operators. We also provide an alternative computation of the heavy-light semiclassical block -- in which two external operators become parametrically heavy -- as a certain scattering process involving higher spin gauge fields in AdS$_3$; this approach highlights the chiral nature of Virasoro blocks. These techniques may be systematically extended to compute corrections to these blocks and to interpolate amongst the different semiclassical regimes.

Witten Diagrams Revisited: The AdS Geometry of Conformal Blocks

We develop a new method for decomposing Witten diagrams into conformal blocks. The steps involved are elementary, requiring no explicit integration, and operate directly in position space. Central to this construction is an appealingly simple answer to the question: what object in AdS computes a conformal block? The answer is a "geodesic Witten diagram," which is essentially an ordinary exchange Witten diagram, except that the cubic vertices are not integrated over all of AdS, but only over bulk geodesics connecting the boundary operators. In particular, we consider the case of four-point functions of scalar operators, and show how to easily reproduce existing results for the relevant conformal blocks in arbitrary dimension.

Worldline approach to semi-classical conformal blocks

We extend recent results on semi-classical conformal blocks in 2d CFT and their relation to 3D gravity via the AdS/CFT correspondence. We consider four-point functions with two heavy and two light external operators, along with the exchange of a light operator. By explicit computation, we establish precise agreement between these CFT objects and a simple picture of particle worldlines joined by cubic vertices propagating in asymptotically AdS$_3$ geometries (conical defects or BTZ black holes). We provide a simple argument that explains this agreement.

A new spin on entanglement entropy

We argue that the usual notions of thermodynamic and entanglement entropy have novel analogs in the context of higher spin theories. In particular, the Wald and Ryu-Takayanagi formulas have natural higher spin extensions that we work out and study. On the CFT side, just as standard entanglement entropy in CFT_2 can be computed from twist field correlators, we demonstrate that by introducing corresponding operators carrying higher spin charge we can precisely reproduce our results from the bulk. We also show that the first law for entanglement entropy implies the linearized field equations for the metric and higher spin fields, generalizing recent work on deriving the linearized Einstein equations from the first law.

An Entropy Formula for Higher Spin Black Holes via Conical Singularities

We consider the entropy of higher spin black holes in 2+1 dimensions using the conical singularity approach. By introducing a conical singularity along a non contractible cycle and carefully evaluating its contribution to the Chern Simons action, we derive a simple expression for the entropy of a general stationary higher spin black hole. The resulting formula is shown to satisfy the first law of thermodynamics, and yields agreement with previous results based on integrating the first law.

Matching four-point functions in higher spin AdS_3/CFT_2

Working in the context of the proposed duality between 3D higher spin gravity and 2D W_N minimal model CFTs, we compute a class of four-point functions in the bulk and on the boundary, and demonstrate precise agreement between them. This is the first computation of a correlator in 3D higher spin gravity whose functional form is not fixed by conformal invariance. In the bulk we make use of elegant methods to solve the scalar field equation using only matrix manipulations, while on the CFT side we employ the Coulomb gas representation. Comparison is made in the semiclassical limit, in which the central charge is taken to infinity at fixed N. Along the way, we establish the rules for computing correlation functions of multi-trace operators in higher spin gravity. The method involves solving the scalar master field equation in a general representation of the bulk gauge algebra. Although most of our work is carried out for the bulk theory based on sl(N) x sl(N), we also discuss how our methods can be adapted to the hs[λ] x hs[λ] theory, which is relevant in the 't Hooft limit.

Probing higher spin black holes

We study the propagation of scalar fields on various backgrounds in three dimensional higher spin gravity. Our main emphasis is on obtaining the bulk-boundary propagator, which can be efficiently computed using group theory and higher spin gauge symmetry and from which we can extract scalar two-point functions in the dual CFT. As an illustration, we obtain a simple closed form expression for the propagator in a particular spin-3 deformation of AdS_3. In the case of higher spin black holes, we prove on general grounds that the propagator respects an imaginary time periodicity consistent with the thermal nature of the black hole; in doing so we make progress in understanding the group exponentiation of the higher spin Lie algebra hs[λ], and its center. We also explicitly compute the propagator in the black hole background at first order in the higher spin charge. Evaluated on the Lorentzian section, the result is consistent with an interpretation in which the black hole has two causally disconnected boundary components, as is the case for the BTZ black hole.

Black holes in three dimensional higher spin gravity: A review

We review recent progress in the construction of black holes in three dimensional higher spin gravity theories. Starting from spin-3 gravity and working our way toward the theory of an infinite tower of higher spins coupled to matter, we show how to harness higher spin gauge invariance to consistently generalize familiar notions of black holes. We review the construction of black holes with conserved higher spin charges and the computation of their partition functions to leading asymptotic order. In view of the AdS/CFT correspondence as applied to certain vector-like conformal field theories with extended conformal symmetry, we successfully compare to CFT calculations in a generalized Cardy regime. A brief recollection of pertinent aspects of ordinary gravity is also given.

Charge Expulsion from Black Brane Horizons, and Holographic Quantum Criticality in the Plane

Quantum critical behavior in 2+1 dimensions is established via holographic methods in a 5+1-dimensional Einstein gravity theory with gauge potential form fields of rank 1 and 2. These fields are coupled to one another via a tri-linear Chern-Simons term with strength k. The quantum phase transition is physically driven by the expulsion of the electric charge from inside the black brane horizon to the outside, where it gets carried by the gauge fields which acquire charge thanks to the Chern-Simons interaction. At a critical value k=k_c, zero temperature, and any finite value of the magnetic field, the IR behavior is governed by a near-horizon Lifshitz geometry. The associated dynamical scaling exponent depends on the magnetic field. For k<k_c, the flow towards low temperature is governed by a Reissner-Nordstrom-like black brane whose charge and entropy density are non-vanishing at zero temperature. For k > k_c, the IR flow is towards the purely magnetic brane in AdS_6. Its near-horizon geometry is AdS_4 \times R^2, so that the entropy density vanishes quadratically with temperature, and all charge is carried by the gauge fields outside of the horizon.

Quantum Criticality via Magnetic Branes

Holographic methods are used to investigate the low temperature limit, including quantum critical behavior, of strongly coupled 4-dimensional gauge theories in the presence of an external magnetic field, and finite charge density. In addition to the metric, the dual gravity theory contains a Maxwell field with Chern-Simons coupling. In the absence of charge, the magnetic field induces an RG flow to an infrared AdS$_3 \times {\bf R}^2$ geometry, which is dual to a 2-dimensional CFT representing strongly interacting fermions in the lowest Landau level. Two asymptotic Virasoro algebras and one chiral Kac-Moody algebra arise as {\sl emergent symmetries} in the IR. Including a nonzero charge density reveals a quantum critical point when the magnetic field reaches a critical value whose scale is set by the charge density. The critical theory is probed by the study of long-distance correlation functions of the boundary stress tensor and current. All quantities of major physical interest in this system, such as critical exponents and scaling functions, can be computed analytically. We also study an asymptotically AdS$_6$ system whose magnetic field induced quantum critical point is governed by a IR Lifshitz geometry, holographically dual to a D=2+1 field theory. The behavior of these holographic theories shares important similarities with that of real world quantum critical systems obtained by tuning a magnetic field, and may be relevant to materials such as Strontium Ruthenates.

Charged Magnetic Brane Correlators and Twisted Virasoro Algebras

Prior work using gauge/gravity duality has established the existence of a quantum critical point in the phase diagram of 3+1-dimensional gauge theories at finite charge density and background magnetic field. The critical theory, obtained by tuning the dimensionless charge density to magnetic field ratio, exhibits nontrivial scaling in its thermodynamic properties, and an associated nontrivial dynamical critical exponent. In the present work, we analytically compute low energy correlation functions in the background of the charged magnetic brane solution to 4+1-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory, which represents the bulk description of the critical point. Results are obtained for neutral scalar operators, the stress tensor, and the U(1)-current. The theory is found to exhibit a twisted Virasoro algebra, constructed from a linear combination of the original stress tensor and chiral U(1)-current. The effective speed of light in the IR is renormalized downward for one chirality, but not the other, by finite density, a behavior that is consistent with a Luttinger liquid description of fermions in the lowest Landau level. The results obtained here do not directly shed light on the mechanism driving the phase transition, and we comment on why this is so.

Higher Spin Black Holes

We study classical solutions of three dimensional higher spin gravity in the Chern-Simons formulation. We find solutions that generalize the BTZ black hole and carry spin-3 charge. The black hole entropy formula yields a result for the asymptotic growth of the partition function at finite spin-3 chemical potential. Along the way, we develop technology for computing AdS/CFT correlation functions involving higher spin operators.

Partition functions of higher spin black holes and their CFT duals

We find black hole solutions of D=3 higher-spin gravity in the hs[λ] + hs[λ] Chern-Simons formulation. These solutions have a spin-3 chemical potential, and carry nonzero values for an infinite number of charges of the asymptotic W_{\infty}[λ] symmetry. Applying a previously developed set of rules for ensuring smooth solutions, we compute the black hole partition function perturbatively in the chemical potential. At λ=0, 1 we compare our result against boundary CFT computations involving free bosons and fermions, and find perfect agreement. For generic λ we expect that our gravity result will match the partition function of the coset CFTs conjectured by Gaberdiel and Gopakumar to be dual to these bulk theories.

Spacetime Geometry in Higher Spin Gravity

Higher spin gravity is an interesting toy model of stringy geometry. Particularly intriguing is the presence of higher spin gauge transformations that redefine notions of invariance in gravity: the existence of event horizons and singularities in the metric become gauge dependent. In previous work, solutions of spin-3 gravity in the SL(3,R) x SL(3,R) Chern-Simons formulation were found, and were proposed to play the role of black holes. However, in the gauge employed there, the spacetime metric describes a traversable wormhole connecting two asymptotic regions, rather than a black hole. In this paper, we show explicitly that under a higher spin gauge transformation these solutions can be transformed to describe black holes with manifestly smooth event horizons, thereby changing the spacetime causal structure. A related aspect is that the Chern-Simons theory admits two distinct AdS_3 vacua with different asymptotic W-algebra symmetries and central charges. We show that these vacua are connected by an explicit, Lorentz symmetry-breaking RG flow, of which our solutions represent finite temperature generalizations. These features will be present in any SL(N,R) x SL(N,R) Chern-Simons theory of higher spins.

Universality and exactness of Schrodinger geometries in string and M-theory

We propose an organizing principle for classifying and constructing Schrodinger-invariant solutions within string theory and M-theory, based on the idea that such solutions represent nonlinear completions of linearized vector and graviton Kaluza-Klein excitations of AdS compactifications. A crucial simplification, derived from the symmetry of AdS, is that the nonlinearities appear only quadratically. Accordingly, every AdS vacuum admits infinite families of Schrodinger deformations parameterized by the dynamical exponent z. We exhibit the ease of finding these solutions by presenting three new constructions: two from M5 branes, both wrapped and extended, and one from the D1-D5 (and S-dual F1-NS5) system. From the boundary perspective, perturbing a CFT by a null vector operator can lead to nonzero beta-functions for spin-2 operators; however, symmetry restricts them to be at most quadratic in couplings. This point of view also allows us to easily prove nonrenormalization theorems: for any Sch(z) solution of two-derivative supergravity constructed in the above manner, z is uncorrected to all orders in higher derivative corrections if the deforming KK mode lies in a short multiplet of an AdS supergroup. Furthermore, we find infinite classes of 1/4 BPS solutions with 4-,5- and 7-dimensional Schrodinger symmetry that are exact.

Charged Magnetic Brane Solutions in AdS_5 and the fate of the third law of thermodynamics

We construct asymptotically AdS_5 solutions to 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with Chern-Simons term which are dual to 4-dimensional gauge theories, including N=4 SYM theory, in the presence of a constant background magnetic field B and a uniform electric charge density ρ. For the solutions corresponding to supersymmetric gauge theories, we find numerically that a small magnetic field causes a drastic decrease in the entropy at low temperatures. The near-horizon AdS_2 \times R^3 geometry of the purely electrically charged brane thus appears to be unstable under the addition of a small magnetic field. Based on this observation, we propose a formulation of the third law of thermodynamics (or Nernst theorem) that can be applied to black holes in the AdS/CFT context. We also find interesting behavior for smaller, non-supersymmetric, values of the Chern-Simons coupling k. For k=1 we exhibit exact solutions corresponding to warped AdS_3 black holes, and show that these can be connected to asymptotically AdS_5 spacetime. For k\leq 1 the entropy appears to go to a finite value at extremality, but the solutions still exhibit a mild singularity at strictly zero temperature. In addition to our numerics, we carry out a complete perturbative analysis valid to order B^2, and find that this corroborates our numerical results insofar as they overlap.

Holographic Metamagnetism, Quantum Criticality, and Crossover Behavior

Using high-precision numerical analysis, we show that 3+1 dimensional gauge theories holographically dual to 4+1 dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory undergo a quantum phase transition in the presence of a finite charge density and magnetic field. The quantum critical theory has dynamical scaling exponent z=3, and is reached by tuning a relevant operator of scaling dimension 2. For magnetic field B above the critical value B_c, the system behaves as a Fermi liquid. As the magnetic field approaches B_c from the high field side, the specific heat coefficient diverges as 1/(B-B_c), and non-Fermi liquid behavior sets in. For B<B_c the entropy density s becomes non-vanishing at zero temperature, and scales according to s \sim \sqrt{B_c - B}. At B=B_c, and for small non-zero temperature T, a new scaling law sets in for which s\sim T^{1/3}. Throughout a small region surrounding the quantum critical point, the ratio s/T^{1/3} is given by a universal scaling function which depends only on the ratio (B-B_c)/T^{2/3}. The quantum phase transition involves non-analytic behavior of the specific heat and magnetization but no change of symmetry. Above the critical field, our numerical results are consistent with those predicted by the Hertz/Millis theory applied to metamagnetic quantum phase transitions, which also describe non-analytic changes in magnetization without change of symmetry. Such transitions have been the subject of much experimental investigation recently, especially in the compound Sr_3 Ru_2 O_7, and we comment on the connections.

Magnetic Brane Solutions in AdS

We construct asymptotically AdS_5 solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory dual to N=4 SYM theory on R^{3,1} in the presence of a background magnetic field. The solutions interpolate between AdS_5 and a near horizon AdS_3\times T^2. The central charge of the near horizon region, and hence low temperature entropy of the solution, is found to be \sqrt{4\over 3} times that of free N=4 SYM theory. The entropy vanishes at zero temperature. We also present the generalization of these solutions to arbitrary spacetime dimensionality.

Magnetic Field Induced Quantum Criticality via new Asymptotically AdS_5 Solutions

Using analytical methods, we derive and extend previously obtained numerical results on the low temperature properties of holographic duals to four-dimensional gauge theories at finite density in a nonzero magnetic field. We find a new asymptotically AdS_5 solution representing the system at zero temperature. This solution has vanishing entropy density, and the charge density in the bulk is carried entirely by fluxes. The dimensionless magnetic field to charge density ratio for these solutions is bounded from below, with a quantum critical point appearing at the lower bound. Using matched asymptotic expansions, we extract the low temperature thermodynamics of the system. Above the critical magnetic field, the low temperature entropy density takes a simple form, linear in the temperature, and with a specific heat coefficient diverging at the critical point. At the critical magnetic field, we derive the scaling law s ~ T^{1/3} inferred previously from numerical analysis. We also compute the full scaling function describing the region near the critical point, and identify the dynamical critical exponent: z=3. These solutions are expected to holographically represent boundary theories in which strongly interacting fermions are filling up a Fermi sea. They are fully top-down constructions in which both the bulk and boundary theories have well known embeddings in string theory.

RG Flow of Magnetic Brane Correlators

The magnetic brane solution to five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory provides a holographic description of the RG flow from four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory in the presence of a constant magnetic field to a two-dimensional low energy CFT. We compute two-point correlators involving the U(1) current and the stress tensor, and use their leading IR behavior to confirm the existence of a single chiral current algebra, and of left- and right-moving Virasoro algebras in the low energy CFT. The common central charge of the Virasoro algebras is found to match the Brown-Henneaux formula, while the level of the current algebra is related to the Chern-Simons coupling. The coordinate reparametrizations produced by the Virasoro algebras on the AdS_3 near-horizon geometry arise from physical non-pure gauge modes in the asymptotic AdS_5 region, thereby providing a concrete example for the emergence of IR symmetries. Finally, we interpret the infinite series of sub-leading IR contributions to the correlators in terms of certain double-trace interactions generated by the RG flow in the low energy CFT.

S-duality in AdS/CFT magnetohydrodynamics

We study the nonlinear hydrodynamics of a 2+1 dimensional charged conformal fluid subject to slowly varying external electric and magnetic fields. Following recent work on deriving nonlinear hydrodynamics from gravity, we demonstrate how long wavelength perturbations of the AdS dyonic black brane solution of 4D supergravity are governed by equations equivalent to fluid dynamics equations in the boundary theory. We investigate the implications of $S$-duality for our system, and derive restrictions imposed on the transport coefficients of a generic fluid invariant under the S operation. We also expand on our earlier work and determine a new set of previously undetermined transport coefficients for the conformal fluid with an AdS gravity dual. Quite surprisingly, we discover that half of the transport coefficients allowed by symmetry vanish in the holographic fluid at linear order in the hydrodynamic expansion.

Precision Entropy of Spinning Black Holes

We construct spinning black hole solutions in five dimensions that take into account the mixed gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons term and its supersymmetric completion. The resulting entropy formula is discussed from several points of view. We include a Taub-NUT base space in order to test recent conjectures relating 5D black holes to 4D black holes and the topological string. Our explicit results show that certain charge shifts have to be taken into account for these relations to hold. We also compute corrections to the entropy of black rings in terms of near horizon data.

5D Attractors with Higher Derivatives

We analyze higher derivative corrections to attractor geometries in five dimensions. We find corrected AdS_3xS^2 geometries by solving the equations of motion coming from a recently constructed four-derivative supergravity action in five dimensions. The result allows us to explicitly verify a previous anomaly based derivation of the AdS_3 central charges of this theory. Also, by dimensional reduction we compare our results with those of the 4D higher derivative attractor, and find complete agreement.

5D Black Holes and Strings with Higher Derivatives

We find asymptotically flat black hole and string solutions to 5D supergravity in the presence of higher derivative terms. In some cases, including the fundamental heterotic string solution, the higher derivative terms smooth out naked singularities into regular geometries carrying zero entropy. We also compute corrections to the entropy of 5D Calabi-Yau black holes, and discuss the relation to previous results.

Partition functions and elliptic genera from supergravity

We develop the spacetime aspects of the computation of partition functions for string/M-theory on AdS(3) xM. Subleading corrections to the semi-classical result are included systematically, laying the groundwork for comparison with CFT partition functions via the AdS(3)/CFT(2) correspondence. This leads to a better understanding of the "Farey tail" expansion of Dijkgraaf et. al. from the point of view of bulk physics. Besides clarifying various issues, we also extend the analysis to the N=2 setting with higher derivative effects included.

Holographic Gravitational Anomalies

In the AdS/CFT correspondence one encounters theories that are not invariant under diffeomorphisms. In the boundary theory this is a gravitational anomaly, and can arise in 4k+2 dimensions. In the bulk, there can be gravitational Chern-Simons terms which vary by a total derivative. We work out the holographic stress tensor for such theories, and demonstrate agreement between the bulk and boundary. Anomalies lead to novel effects, such as a nonzero angular momentum for global AdS(3). In string theory such Chern-Simons terms are known with exact coefficients. The resulting anomalies, combined with symmetries, imply corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of black holes that agree exactly with the microscopic counting.

Microscopic Black Hole Entropy in Theories with Higher Derivatives

We discuss higher derivative corrections to black hole entropy in theories that allow a near horizon AdS_3 x X geometry. In arbitrary theories with diffeomorphism invariance we show how to obtain the spacetime central charge in a simple way. Black hole entropy then follows from the Euclidean partition function, and we show that this gives agreement with Wald's formula. In string theory there are certain diffeomorphism anomalies that we exploit. We thereby reproduce some recent computations of corrected entropy formulas, and extend them to the nonextremal, nonsupersymetric context. Examples include black holes in M-theory on K3 x T^2, whose entropy reproduces that of the perturbative heterotic string with both right and left movers excited and angular momentum included. Our anomaly based approach also sheds light on why exact results have been obtained in four dimensions while ignoring R^4 type corrections.

On the Matter of the Dijkgraaf--Vafa Conjecture

With the aim of extending the gauge theory -- matrix model connection to more general matter representations, we prove that for various two-index tensors of the classical gauge groups, the perturbative contributions to the glueball superpotential reduce to matrix integrals. Contributing diagrams consist of certain combinations of spheres, disks, and projective planes, which we evaluate to four and five loop order. In the case of $Sp(N)$ with antisymmetric matter, independent results are obtained by computing the nonperturbative superpotential for $N=4,6$ and 8. Comparison with the Dijkgraaf-Vafa approach reveals agreement up to $N/2$ loops in matrix model perturbation theory, with disagreement setting in at $h=N/2+1$ loops, $h$ being the dual Coxeter number. At this order, the glueball superfield $S$ begins to obey nontrivial relations due to its underlying structure as a product of fermionic superfields. We therefore find a relatively simple example of an ${\cal N}=1$ gauge theory admitting a large $N$ expansion, whose dynamically generated superpotential differs from the one obtained in the matrix model approach.

Bulk vs. Boundary Dynamics in Anti-de Sitter Spacetime

We investigate the details of the bulk-boundary correspondence in Lorentzian signature anti-de Sitter space. Operators in the boundary theory couple to sources identified with the boundary values of non-normalizable bulk modes. Such modes do not fluctuate and provide classical backgrounds on which bulk excitations propagate. Normalizable modes in the bulk arise as a set of saddlepoints of the action for a fixed boundary condition. They fluctuate and describe the Hilbert space of physical states. We provide an explicit, complete set of both types of modes for free scalar fields in global and Poincaré coordinates. For $\ads{3}$, the normalizable and non-normalizable modes originate in the possible representations of the isometry group $\SL_L\times\SL_R$ for a field of given mass. We discuss the group properties of mode solutions in both global and Poincaré coordinates and their relation to different expansions of operators on the cylinder and on the plane. Finally, we discuss the extent to which the boundary theory is a useful description of the bulk spacetime.

Microcanonical D-branes and Back Reaction

We compare the emission rates from excited D-branes in the microcanonical ensemble with back reaction corrected emission rates from black holes in field theory. In both cases, the rates in the high energy tail of the spectrum differ markedly from what a canonical ensemble or free field theory approach would yield. Instead of being proportional to a Bose-Einstein distribution function, the rates in the high energy tail are proportional to $\exp (-ΔS_{BH})$ where $ΔS_{BH}$ is the difference in black hole entropies before and after emission. After including the new effects, we find agreement, at leading order, between the D-brane and field theory rates over the entire range of the spectrum.

Non-thermal aspects of black hole radiance

The phenomenon of black hole thermodynamics raises several deep issues which any proper theory of quantum gravity must confront: to what extent does the inclusion of the back-reaction alter the thermal character of the radiation, how can the entropy be understood from a microscopic standpoint, what is the ultimate fate of an evaporating black hole, and is the outcome reconcilable with unitary time evolution in quantum mechanics? In the first part of this thesis, we address the issue of determining what the actual emission spectrum from a black hole is, once the gravitational field of the emitted quanta is included in a quantum mechanical manner. To make the problem tractable, we employ two important approximations: we quantize only the s-wave sector of the full theory, and we consider only single particle emission. By proceeding in the framework of a Hamiltonian path integral description of this system, we are able to integrate out the gravitational field, thereby obtaining an effective action depending only on the matter degrees of freedom. This effective action can then be second quantized in terms of new, corrected, mode solutions thus enabling the calculation of the emission spectrum from modified Bogoliubov coefficients. The results are particularly interesting in the case of emission from Reissner-Nordstrom black holes, since in the extremal limit our results are dramatically different from what a naive, and incorrect, semi-classical calculation would yield. The other major topic which we discuss is the dynamics of quantum fields on background geometries which undergo quantum tunneling. An example of such a system which has important implications for both cosmology and quantum gravity in general, is the tunneling of a false vacuum bubble leading to the creation

Effect of Self-Interaction on Charged Black Hole Radiance

We extend our previous analysis of the modification of the spectrum of black hole radiance due to the simplest and probably most quantitatively important back-reaction effect, that is self-gravitational interaction, to the case of charged holes. As anticipated, the corrections are small for low-energy radiation when the hole is well away from extremality, butbecome qualitatively important near extremality. A notable result is that radiation which could leave the hole with mass and charge characteristic of a naked singularity, predicted in the usual approximation of fixed space-time geometry, is here suppressed. We discuss the nature of our approximations, and show how they work in a simpler electromagnetic analogue problem.
