A One-Loop Test of the near-AdS$_2$/near-CFT$_1$ Correspondence

We analyze quantum fluctuations around black hole solutions to the Jackiw-Teitelboim model. We use harmonic analysis on Euclidean AdS$_2$ to show that the logarithmic corrections to the partition function are determined entirely by quadratic holomorphic differentials, even when conformal symmetry is broken and harmonic modes are no longer true zero modes. Our quantum-corrected partition function agrees precisely with the SYK result. We argue that our effective quantum field theory methods and results generalize to other theories of two-dimensional dilaton gravity.

AdS$_5$ Black Hole Entropy near the BPS Limit

We analyze AdS$_5$ black holes that are nearly supersymmetric. They depart from the BPS limit in two distinct ways: a temperature takes them above extremality and a potential violates a certain constraint. We study the thermodynamics of these deformations and their interplay in detail. We discuss recent microscopic computations of BPS black hole entropy in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM and generalize methods to the nearBPS regime by relaxing constraints imposed by supersymmetry. The computations recover gravitational results from microscopics also for nearBPS black holes.

The Scales of Black Holes with nAdS$_2$ Geometry

We study nearly extreme black holes with nearly AdS$_2$ horizon geometry in various settings inspired by string theory. Our focus is on the scales of the nAdS$_2$ region and their relation to microscopic theory. These scales are determined by a generalization of the attractor mechanism for extremal black holes and realized geometrically as the normal derivatives along the extremal attractor flow. In some cases the scales are equivalently determined by the charge dependence of the extremal attractor by itself. Our examples include near extreme black holes in $D\geq 4$ dimensions, AdS boundary conditions, rotation, and 5D black holes on the non-BPS branch.

Kerr-Newman Black Holes with String Corrections

We study $\mathcal{N}=2$ supergravity with higher-derivative corrections that preserve the $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry and show that Kerr-Newman black holes are solutions to these theories. Modifications of the black hole entropy due to the higher derivatives are universal and apply even in the BPS and Schwarzschild limits. Our solutions and their entropy are greatly simplified by supersymmetry of the theory even though the black holes generally do not preserve any of the supersymmetry.

Divergences and Boundary Modes in N=8 Supergravity

We reconsider the one loop divergence of ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity in four dimensions. We compute the finite effective potential of ${\cal N}=8$ anti-deSitter supergravity and interpret it as logarithmic running of the cosmological constant. We find that quantum inequivalence between fields that are classically dual is due to boundary modes in AdS$_4$. Some subtleties are traced to the difference between the Euler characteristic of global and thermal AdS$_4$.

Quantum Corrections to Supergravity on AdS$_2\times S^2$

We compute the off-shell spectrum of supergravity on AdS$_2\times S^2$ by explicit diagonalization of the equations of motion for an effective AdS$_2$ theory where all fields are dualized to scalars and spin-${1\over 2}$ fermions. Classifying all bulk modes as physical, gauge violating, and pure gauge let us identify boundary modes as physical fields on $S^2$ that are formally pure gauge but with gauge function that is non-normalizable on AdS$_2$. As an application we compute the leading quantum correction to AdS$_2\times S^2$ as a sum over physical fields including boundary states.

Universal Corrections to Black Hole Entropy in $\mathcal{N} \geq 2$ Supergravity

We embed general solutions to 4D Einstein-Maxwell theory into $\mathcal{N} \geq 2$ supergravity and study quadratic fluctuations of the supergravity fields around the background. We compute one-loop quantum corrections for all fields and show that the $c$-anomaly vanishes for complete $\mathcal{N}=2$ multiplets. Logarithmic corrections to the entropy of Kerr-Newman black holes are therefore universal and independent of black hole parameters.

Black Holes with Intrinsic Spin

We analyze the general black hole solutions to the four dimensional STU model recently constructed by Chow and Compere. We define a dilute gas limit where the black holes can be interpreted as excited states of an extremal ground state. In this limit we express the black hole entropy and the excitation energy in terms of physical quantities with no need for parametric charges. We discuss a dual microscopic CFT description that incorporates all electric and magnetic charges. This description is recovered geometrically by identification of a near horizon BTZ region. We construct the subtracted geometry with no restrictions on charges by analyzing the scalar wave equation in the full geometry. We determine the matter sources that support the subtracted geometry by studying a scaling limit and show that the general geometry permits a dilute gas description with parameters that we specify.

Logarithmic Corrections to $N \geq 2$ Black Hole Entropy

We revisit the computation of logarithmic corrections to black holes with N equal or greater than 2 supersymmetry. We employ an on-shell method that takes advantage of the symmetries in the AdS(2) x S**2 near horizon geometry. For bulk modes interactions are incorporated through the spectrum of chiral primaries that we derive afresh. The spectrum of boundary states is computed explicitly by analyzing gauge variations. Elementary heat kernels in 4D and 2D then give the logarithmic corrections to the black hole entropy. Our computation represents a streamlined and simplified derivation that agrees with the results recently found by A. Sen.

Conformal Symmetry for Black Holes in Four Dimensions

We show that the asymptotic boundary conditions of general asymptotically flat black holes in four dimensions can be modified such that a conformal symmetry emerges. The black holes with the asymptotic geometry removed in this manner satisfy the equations of motion of minimal supergravity in five dimensions. We develop evidence that a two dimensional CFT dual of general black holes in four dimensions account for their black hole entropy.

Separability of Black Holes in String Theory

We analyze the origin of separability for rotating black holes in string theory, considering both massless and massive geodesic equations as well as the corresponding wave equations. We construct a conformal Killing-Stackel tensor for a general class of black holes with four independent charges, then identify two-charge configurations where enhancement to an exact Killing-Stackel tensor is possible. We show that further enhancement to a conserved Killing-Yano tensor is possible only for the special case of Kerr-Newman black holes. We construct natural null congruences for all these black holes and use the results to show that only the Kerr-Newman black holes are algebraically special in the sense of Petrov. Modifying the asymptotic behavior by the subtraction procedure that induces an exact SL(2)^2 also preserves only the conformal Killing-Stackel tensor. Similarly, we find that a rotating Kaluza-Klein black hole possesses a conformal Killing-Stackel tensor but has no further enhancements.

preprint2011arXiv

Conformal Symmetry for General Black Holes

We show that the warp factor of a generic asymptotically flat black hole in five dimensions can be adjusted such that a conformal symmetry emerges. The construction preserves all near horizon properties of the black holes, such as the thermodynamic potentials and the entropy. We interpret the geometry with modified asymptotic behavior as the "bare" black hole, with the ambient flat space removed. Our warp factor subtraction generalizes hidden conformal symmetry and applies whether or not rotation is significant. We also find a relation to standard AdS/CFT correspondence by embedding the black holes in six dimensions. The asymptotic conformal symmetry guarantees a dual CFT description of the general rotating black holes.

Helical Luttinger Liquids and Three Dimensional Black Holes

Cold interacting fermions in two dimensions form exactly solvable Luttinger liquids, whose characteristic scaling exponents differ from those of conventional Fermi liquids. We use the AdS/CFT correspondence to discuss an equivalence between a class of helical, strongly coupled Luttinger liquids and fermions propagating in the background of a 3D black hole. The microscopic Lagrangian is explicitly known and the construction is fully embeddable in string theory. The retarded Green function at low temperature and energy arises from the geometry very near the black hole horizon. This structure is universal for all cold, charged liquids with a dual description in gravity.

Heterotic Flux Attractors

We find attractor equations describing moduli stabilization for heterotic compactifications with generic SU(3)-structure. Complex structure and Kähler moduli are treated on equal footing by using SU(3)xSU(3)-structure at intermediate steps. All independent vacuum data, including VEVs of the stabilized moduli, is encoded in a pair of generating functions that depend on fluxes alone. We work out an explicit example that illustrates our methods.

preprint2010arXiv

Holographic Non-Fermi Liquids and the Luttinger Theorem

We show that the Luttinger theorem, a robust feature of Fermi liquids, can be violated in non-Fermi liquids. We compute non-Fermi liquid Green functions using duality to black holes and find that the volume of the Fermi surface depends exponentially on the scaling dimension, which is a measure of the coupling. This demonstrates that Luttinger's theorem does not extend to non-Fermi liquids. We comment on possible experimental signatures.

Hypermoduli Stabilization, Flux Attractors, and Generating Functions

We study stabilization of hypermoduli with emphasis on the effects of generalized fluxes. We find a class of no-scale vacua described by ISD conditions even in the presence of geometric flux. The associated flux attractor equations can be integrated by a generating function with the property that the hypermoduli are determined by a simple extremization principle. We work out several orbifold examples where all vector moduli and many hypermoduli are stabilized, with VEVs given explicitly in terms of fluxes.

Three Dimensional Origin of AdS_2 Quantum Gravity

We study AdS_2 quantum gravity with emphasis on consistency with results from AdS_3. We lift AdS_2 black holes to three dimensions and map fluctuations around the solutions. Comparison with near extremal BTZ are discussed, with due emphasis on global aspects. The results confirm that parameters like central charges and conformal weights computed directly in 2D are consistent with standard results in 3D. Applying our results to the thermodynamics of near extreme Kerr black holes, we show that AdS_2 quantum gravity gives the correct central charge c=12J, and the entropy of excitations above the extremal limit is captured correctly.

Precision Entropy of Spinning Black Holes

We construct spinning black hole solutions in five dimensions that take into account the mixed gauge-gravitational Chern-Simons term and its supersymmetric completion. The resulting entropy formula is discussed from several points of view. We include a Taub-NUT base space in order to test recent conjectures relating 5D black holes to 4D black holes and the topological string. Our explicit results show that certain charge shifts have to be taken into account for these relations to hold. We also compute corrections to the entropy of black rings in terms of near horizon data.

5D Attractors with Higher Derivatives

We analyze higher derivative corrections to attractor geometries in five dimensions. We find corrected AdS_3xS^2 geometries by solving the equations of motion coming from a recently constructed four-derivative supergravity action in five dimensions. The result allows us to explicitly verify a previous anomaly based derivation of the AdS_3 central charges of this theory. Also, by dimensional reduction we compare our results with those of the 4D higher derivative attractor, and find complete agreement.

5D Black Holes and Strings with Higher Derivatives

We find asymptotically flat black hole and string solutions to 5D supergravity in the presence of higher derivative terms. In some cases, including the fundamental heterotic string solution, the higher derivative terms smooth out naked singularities into regular geometries carrying zero entropy. We also compute corrections to the entropy of 5D Calabi-Yau black holes, and discuss the relation to previous results.

Partition functions and elliptic genera from supergravity

We develop the spacetime aspects of the computation of partition functions for string/M-theory on AdS(3) xM. Subleading corrections to the semi-classical result are included systematically, laying the groundwork for comparison with CFT partition functions via the AdS(3)/CFT(2) correspondence. This leads to a better understanding of the "Farey tail" expansion of Dijkgraaf et. al. from the point of view of bulk physics. Besides clarifying various issues, we also extend the analysis to the N=2 setting with higher derivative effects included.

Holographic Gravitational Anomalies

In the AdS/CFT correspondence one encounters theories that are not invariant under diffeomorphisms. In the boundary theory this is a gravitational anomaly, and can arise in 4k+2 dimensions. In the bulk, there can be gravitational Chern-Simons terms which vary by a total derivative. We work out the holographic stress tensor for such theories, and demonstrate agreement between the bulk and boundary. Anomalies lead to novel effects, such as a nonzero angular momentum for global AdS(3). In string theory such Chern-Simons terms are known with exact coefficients. The resulting anomalies, combined with symmetries, imply corrections to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of black holes that agree exactly with the microscopic counting.

Microscopic Black Hole Entropy in Theories with Higher Derivatives

We discuss higher derivative corrections to black hole entropy in theories that allow a near horizon AdS_3 x X geometry. In arbitrary theories with diffeomorphism invariance we show how to obtain the spacetime central charge in a simple way. Black hole entropy then follows from the Euclidean partition function, and we show that this gives agreement with Wald's formula. In string theory there are certain diffeomorphism anomalies that we exploit. We thereby reproduce some recent computations of corrected entropy formulas, and extend them to the nonextremal, nonsupersymetric context. Examples include black holes in M-theory on K3 x T^2, whose entropy reproduces that of the perturbative heterotic string with both right and left movers excited and angular momentum included. Our anomaly based approach also sheds light on why exact results have been obtained in four dimensions while ignoring R^4 type corrections.

Inflation and de Sitter Holography

We develop the relation between de Sitter holography and inflation in detail, with particular attention to cosmic density perturbations. We set up the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism to present a systematic treatment of the logarithmic corrections to a scale invariant spectrum. Our computations can be interpreted without reference to holography, as strong infra-red effects in gravity. This point of view may be relevant for the fine-tuning problems inherent to inflation.

preprint2003arXiv

Squeezed States in the de Sitter Vacuum

We discuss the treatment of squeezed states as excitations in the Euclidean vacuum of de Sitter space. A comparison with the treatment of these states as candidate no-particle states, or alpha-vacua, shows important differences already in the free theory. At the interacting level alpha-vacua are inconsistent, but squeezed state excitations seem perfectly acceptable. Indeed, matrix elements can be renormalized in the excited states using precisely the standard local counterterms of the Euclidean vacuum. Implications for inflationary scenarios in cosmology are discussed.

Kaluza-Klein Black Holes in String Theory

Non-supersymmetric black holes carrying both electric and magnetic charge with respect to a single Kaluza-Klein gauge field have much in common with supersymmetric black holes. Angular momentum conservation and other general physics principles underlies some of their basic features. Kaluza-Klein black holes are interpreted in string theory as bound states of D6-branes and D0-branes. The microscopic theory reproduces the full nonlinear mass formula of the extremal black holes.

Currents and Moduli in the (4,0) theory

We consider black strings in five dimensions and their description as a (4,0) CFT. The CFT moduli space is described explicitly, including its subtle global structure. BPS conditions and global symmetries determine the spectrum of charged excitations, leading to an entropy formula for near-extreme black holes in four dimensions with arbitrary charge vector. In the BPS limit, this formula reduces to the quartic E(7,7) invariant. The prospects for a description of the (4,0) theory as a solvable CFT are explored.

U(1) Charges and Moduli in the D1-D5 System

The decoupling limit of the D1-D5 system compactified on T^4\times S^1 has a rich spectrum of U(1) charged excitations. Even though these states are not BPS in the limit, BPS considerations determine the mass and the semiclassical entropy for a given charge vector. The dependence of the mass formula on the compactification moduli situates the symmetric orbifold Sym^N(T^4) x T^4 conformal field theory in the moduli space. A detailed analysis of the global identifications of the moduli space yields a picture of multiple weak-coupling limits - one for each factorization of N into D1 and D5 charges d1 and d5=N/d1 - joined through regions of strong coupling in the CFT moduli space.

Resolution of Cosmological Singularities

We show that a class of 3+1 dimensional Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies can be embedded within a variety of solutions of string theory. In some realizations the apparent singularities associated with the big bang or big crunch are resolved at non-singular horizons of higher-dimensional quasi-black hole solutions (with compactified real time); in others plausibly they are resolved at D-brane bound states having no conventional space-time interpretation.

Geometric Entropy, Wave Functionals, and Fermions

We develop techniques for calculating the ground state wave functional and the geometric entropy for some simple field theories. Special attention is devoted to fermions, which present special technical difficulties in this regard. Explicit calculations are carried through for free mass bosons and fermions in two dimensions, using an adaptation of Unruh's technique to treat black hole radiance.
