Snowmass White Paper: String Perturbation Theory

The purpose of this White Paper is to review recent progress towards elucidating and evaluating string amplitudes, relating them to quantum field theory amplitudes, applying their predictions to string dualities, exploring their connection with gravitational physics, and deepening our understanding of their mathematical structure. We also present a selection of targets for future research.

Asymptotics of the $D^8 R^4$ genus-two string invariant

We continue our investigation of the modular graph functions and string invariants that arise at genus-two as coefficients of low energy effective interactions in Type II superstring theory. In previous work, the non-separating degeneration of a genus-two modular graph function of weight $w$ was shown to be given by a Laurent polynomial in the degeneration parameter $t$ of degree $(w,w)$. The coefficients of this polynomial generalize genus-one modular graph functions, up to terms which are exponentially suppressed in $t$ as $t \to \infty$. In this paper, we evaluate this expansion explicitly for the modular graph functions associated with the $D^8 {\cal R}^4$ effective interaction for which the Laurent polynomial has degree $(2,2)$. We also prove that the separating degeneration is given by a polynomial in the degeneration parameter $\ln (|v|)$ up to contributions which are power-behaved in $v$ as $v \to 0$. We further extract the complete, or tropical, degeneration and compare it with the independent calculation of the integrand of the sum of Feynman diagrams that contributes to two-loop type II supergravity expanded to the same order in the low energy expansion. We find that the tropical limit of the string theory integrand reproduces the supergravity integrand as its leading term, but also includes sub-leading terms proportional to odd zeta values that are absent in supergravity and can be ascribed to higher-derivative stringy interactions.

Integrating three-loop modular graph functions and transcendentality of string amplitudes

Modular graph functions (MGFs) are $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$-invariant functions on the Poincaré upper half-plane associated with Feynman graphs of a conformal scalar field on a torus. The low-energy expansion of genus-one superstring amplitudes involves suitably regularized integrals of MGFs over the fundamental domain for $\mathrm{SL}(2,\mathbb{Z})$. In earlier work, these integrals were evaluated for all MGFs up to two loops and for higher loops up to weight six. These results led to the conjectured uniform transcendentality of the genus-one four-graviton amplitude in Type II superstring theory. In this paper, we explicitly evaluate the integrals of several infinite families of three-loop MGFs and investigate their transcendental structure. Up to weight seven, the structure of the integral of each individual MGF is consistent with the uniform transcendentality of string amplitudes. Starting at weight eight, the transcendental weights obtained for the integrals of individual MGFs are no longer consistent with the uniform transcendentality of string amplitudes. However, in all the cases we examine, the violations of uniform transcendentality take on a special form given by the integrals of triple products of non-holomorphic Eisenstein series. If Type II superstring amplitudes do exhibit uniform transcendentality, then the special combinations of MGFs which enter the amplitudes must be such that these integrals of triple products of Eisenstein series precisely cancel one another. Whether this indeed is the case poses a novel challenge to the conjectured uniform transcendentality of genus-one string amplitudes.

Modular graph functions and odd cuspidal functions -- Fourier and Poincaré series

Modular graph functions are $SL(2,{\mathbb Z})$-invariant functions associated with Feynman graphs of a two-dimensional conformal field theory on a torus of modulus $τ$. For one-loop graphs they reduce to real analytic Eisenstein series. We obtain the Fourier series, including the constant and non-constant Fourier modes, of all two-loop modular graph functions, as well as their Poincaré series with respect to $Γ_\infty \backslash PSL(2,{\mathbb Z})$. The Fourier and Poincaré series provide the tools to compute the Petersson inner product of two-loop modular graph functions using Rankin-Selberg-Zagier methods. Modular graph functions which are odd under $τ\to - \bar τ$ are cuspidal functions, with exponential decay near the cusp, and exist starting at two loops. Holomorphic subgraph reduction and the sieve algorithm, developed in earlier work, are used to give a lower bound on the dimension of the space $\mathfrak{A}_w$ of odd two-loop modular graph functions of weight $w$. For $w \leq 11$ the bound is saturated and we exhibit a basis for $\mathfrak{A}_w$.

Absence of irreducible multiple zeta-values in melon modular graph functions

The expansion of a modular graph function on a torus of modulus $τ$ near the cusp is given by a Laurent polynomial in $y= π\Im (τ)$ with coefficients that are rational multiples of single-valued multiple zeta-values, apart from the leading term whose coefficient is rational and exponentially suppressed terms. We prove that the coefficients of the non-leading terms in the Laurent polynomial of the modular graph function $D_N(τ)$ associated with a melon graph is free of irreducible multiple zeta-values and can be written as a polynomial in odd zeta-values with rational coefficients for arbitrary $N \geq 0$. The proof proceeds by expressing a generating function for $D_N(τ)$ in terms of an integral over the Virasoro-Shapiro closed-string tree amplitude.

An Alternative Method for Extracting the von Neumann Entropy from Renyi Entropies

An alternative method is presented for extracting the von Neumann entropy $-\operatorname{Tr} (ρ\ln ρ)$ from $\operatorname{Tr} (ρ^n)$ for integer $n$ in a quantum system with density matrix $ρ$. Instead of relying on direct analytic continuation in $n$, the method uses a generating function $-\operatorname{Tr} \{ ρ\ln [(1-z ρ) / (1-z)] \}$ of an auxiliary complex variable $z$. The generating function has a Taylor series that is absolutely convergent within $|z|<1$, and may be analytically continued in $z$ to $z = -\infty$ where it gives the von Neumann entropy. As an example, we use the method to calculate analytically the CFT entanglement entropy of two intervals in the small cross ratio limit, reproducing a result that Calabrese et al. obtained by direct analytic continuation in $n$. Further examples are provided by numerical calculations of the entanglement entropy of two intervals for general cross ratios, and of one interval at finite temperature and finite interval length.

Two-loop superstring five-point amplitudes I: Construction via chiral splitting and pure spinors

The full two-loop amplitudes for five massless states in Type~II and Heterotic superstrings are constructed in terms of convergent integrals over the genus-two moduli space of compact Riemann surfaces and integrals of Green functions and Abelian differentials on the surface. The construction combines elements from the BRST cohomology of the pure spinor formulation and from chiral splitting with the help of loop momenta and homology invariance. The $α' \to 0$ limit of the resulting superstring amplitude is shown to be in perfect agreement with the previously known amplitude computed in Type~II supergravity. Investigations of the $α'$ expansion of the Type~II amplitude and comparisons with predictions from S-duality are relegated to a first companion paper. A construction from first principles in the RNS formulation of the genus-two amplitude with five external NS states is relegated to a second companion paper.

$AdS_2 \times S^6$ versus $AdS_6 \times S^2$ in Type IIB supergravity

We obtain the complete local solutions with 16 supersymmetries to Type IIB supergravity on a space-time of the form $AdS_{2}\times S^{6}$ warped over a Riemann surface $Σ$ in terms of two locally holmorphic functions on $Σ$. We construct the general Ansatz for the bosonic supergravity fields and supersymmetry generators compatible with the $SO(2,1)\oplus SO(7)$ isometry algebra of space-time, which extends to the corresponding real form of the exceptional Lie superalgebra $F(4)$. We reduce the BPS equations to this Ansatz, obtain their general local solutions, and show that these local solutions solve the full Type IIB supergravity field equations and Bianchi identities. We contrast the $AdS_{2}\times S^{6}$ solution with the closely related $AdS_6\times S^2$ case and present our results for both in parallel. Finally, we present a preliminary analysis of positivity and regularity conditions for $AdS_{2}\times S^{6}$, but postpone the construction of globally regular solutions to a subsequent paper.

Emergent Super-Virasoro on Magnetic Branes

The low energy limit of the stress tensor, gauge current, and supercurrent two-point correlators are calculated in the background of the supersymmetric magnetic brane solution to gauged five-dimensional supergravity constructed by Almuhairi and Polchinski. The resulting correlators provide evidence for the emergence of an N=2 super-Virasoro algebra of right-movers, in addition to a bosonic Virasoro algebra and a $U(1) \oplus U(1)$-current algebra of left-movers (or the parity transform of left- and right-movers depending on the sign of the magnetic field), in the holographically dual strongly interacting two-dimensional effective field theory of the lowest Landau level.

Exact M-Theory Solutions, Integrable Systems, and Superalgebras

In this paper, an overview is presented of the recent construction of fully back-reacted half-BPS solutions in 11-dimensional supergravity which correspond to near-horizon geometries of M2 branes ending on, or intersecting with, M5 and M5$'$ branes along a self-dual string. These solutions have space-time manifold ${\rm AdS}_3 \times S^3 \times S^3$ warped over a Riemann surface $Σ$, and are invariant under the exceptional Lie superalgebra $D(2,1;γ) \oplus D(2,1;γ)$, where $γ$ is a real continuous parameter and $|γ|$ is governed by the ratio of the number of M5 and M5$'$ branes. The construction proceeds by mapping the reduced BPS equations onto an integrable field theory on $Σ$ which is of the Liouville sine-Gordon type. Families of regular solutions are distinguished by the sign of $γ$, and include a two-parameter Janus solution for $γ>0$, and self-dual strings on M5 as well as asymptotically ${\rm AdS}_4/{\mathbb Z}_2$ solutions for $γ<0$.

Higher Order Deformations of Complex Structures

Deformations of complex structures by finite Beltrami differentials are considered on general Riemann surfaces. Exact formulas to any fixed order are derived for the corresponding deformations of the period matrix, Green's functions, and correlation functions in conformal field theories with vanishing total central charge. The stress tensor is shown to give a simple representation of these deformations valid to all orders. Such deformation formulas naturally enter into the evaluation of superstring amplitudes at two-loop order with Ramond punctures, and at higher loop order, in the supergravity formulation of the RNS superstring.

On the modular structure of the genus-one Type II superstring low energy expansion

The analytic contribution to the low energy expansion of Type II string amplitudes at genus-one is a power series in space-time derivatives with coefficients that are determined by integrals of modular functions over the complex structure modulus of the world-sheet torus. These modular functions are associated with world-sheet vacuum Feynman diagrams and given by multiple sums over the discrete momenta on the torus. In this paper we exhibit exact differential and algebraic relations for a certain infinite class of such modular functions by showing that they satisfy Laplace eigenvalue equations with inhomogeneous terms that are polynomial in non-holomorphic Eisenstein series. Furthermore, we argue that the set of modular functions that contribute to the coefficients of interactions up to order D**10 R*4 are linear sums of functions in this class and quadratic polynomials in Eisenstein series and odd Riemann zeta values. Integration over the complex structure results in coefficients of the low energy expansion that are rational numbers multiplying monomials in odd Riemann zeta values.

Proof of a modular relation between 1-, 2- and 3-loop Feynman diagrams on a torus

The coefficients of the higher-derivative terms in the low energy expansion of genus-one graviton Type II superstring scattering amplitudes are determined by integrating sums of non-holomorphic modular functions over the complex structure modulus of a torus. In the case of the four-graviton amplitude, each of these modular functions is a multiple sum associated with a Feynman diagram for a free massless scalar field on the torus. The lines in each diagram join pairs of vertex insertion points and the number of lines defines its weight $w$, which corresponds to its order in the low energy expansion. Previous results concerning the low energy expansion of the genus-one four-graviton amplitude led to a number of conjectured relations between modular functions of a given $w$, but different numbers of loops $\le w-1$. In this paper we shall prove the simplest of these conjectured relations, namely the one that arises at weight $w=4$ and expresses the three-loop modular function $D_4$ in terms of modular functions with one and two loops. As a byproduct, we prove three intriguing new holomorphic modular identities.

The Super Period Matrix with Ramond Punctures in the supergravity formulation

In a very recent preprint, Witten showed how to construct a $g|r \, \times \, g|r$ super period matrix for super Riemann surfaces of genus $g$ with $2r$ Ramond punctures, which is symmetric in the ${\bf Z}_2$ graded sense. He also showed how it can be applied to analyze supersymmetry breaking in string compactifications which are supersymmetric at tree-level. Witten's construction is in the purely holomorphic formulation of super Riemann surfaces. In this paper, a construction is given in the formulation of two-dimensional supergravity. The variations of the super period matrix with respect to supermoduli deformations are also given, as well as an explicit illustration of how the super period matrix with two Ramond punctures would emerge from a degeneration of the super period matrix without punctures in higher genus.

Holographic Entropy and Calabi's Diastasis

The entanglement entropy for interfaces and junctions of two-dimensional CFTs is evaluated on holographically dual half-BPS solutions to six-dimensional Type 4b supergravity with m anti-symmetric tensor supermultiplets. It is shown that the moduli space for an N-junction solution projects to N points in the Kaehler manifold SO(2,m)/( SO(2) x SO(m)). For N=2 the interface entropy is expressed in terms of the central charge and Calabi's diastasis function on SO(2,m)/(SO(2) x SO(m)), thereby lending support from holography to a proposal of Bachas, Brunner, Douglas, and Rastelli. For N=3, the entanglement entropy for a 3-junction decomposes into a sum of diastasis functions between pairs, weighed by combinations of the three central charges, provided the flux charges are all parallel to one another or, more generally, provided the space of flux charges is orthogonal to the space of unattracted scalars. Under similar assumptions for N>3, the entanglement entropy for the N-junction solves a variational problem whose data consist of the N central charges, and the diastasis function evaluated between pairs of N asymptotic AdS_3 x S^3 regions.

M-theory Solutions Invariant under $D(2,1;γ) \oplus D(2,1;γ)$

We simplify and extend the construction of half-BPS solutions to 11-dimensional supergravity, with isometry superalgebra D(2,1;γ) \oplus D(2,1;γ). Their space-time has the form AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 warped over a Riemann surface Σ. It describes near-horizon geometries of M2 branes ending on, or intersecting with, M5 branes along a common string. The general solution to the BPS equations is specified by a reduced set of data (γ, h, G), where γis the real parameter of the isometry superalgebra, and h and G are functions on Σwhose differential equations and regularity conditions depend only on the sign of γ. The magnitude of γenters only through the map of h, G onto the supergravity fields, thereby promoting all solutions into families parametrized by |γ|. By analyzing the regularity conditions for the supergravity fields, we prove two general theorems: (i) that the only solution with a 2-dimensional CFT dual is AdS_3 x S^3 x S^3 x R^2, modulo discrete identifications of the flat R^2, and (ii) that solutions with γ< 0 cannot have more than one asymptotic higher-dimensional AdS region. We classify the allowed singularities of h and G near the boundary of Σ, and identify four local solutions: asymptotic AdS_4/Z_2 or AdS_7' regions; highly-curved M5-branes; and a coordinate singularity called the "cap". By putting these "Lego" pieces together we recover all known global regular solutions with the above symmetry, including the self-dual strings on M5 for $γ< 0$, and the Janus solution for γ> 0, but now promoted to families parametrized by |γ|. We also construct exactly new regular solutions which are asymptotic to AdS_4/Z_2 for γ< 0, and conjecture that they are a different superconformal limit of the self-dual string.

Matching the $D^6 {\cal R}^4$ interaction at two-loops

The coefficient of the $D^6 {\cal R}^4$ interaction in the low energy expansion of the two-loop four-graviton amplitude in type II superstring theory is known to be proportional to the integral of the Zhang-Kawazumi (ZK) invariant over the moduli space of genus-two Riemann surfaces. We demonstrate that the ZK invariant is an eigenfunction with eigenvalue 5 of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in the interior of moduli space. Exploiting this result, we evaluate the integral of the ZK invariant explicitly, finding agreement with the value of the two-loop $D^6 {\cal R}^4$ interaction predicted on the basis of S-duality and supersymmetry. A review of the current understanding of the $D^{2p} {\cal R}^4$ interactions in type II superstring theory compactified on a torus $T^d$ with $p \leq 3$ and $d \leq 4$ is included.

Topics in Two-Loop Superstring Perturbation Theory

In this contribution to the Proceedings of the Conference on Analysis, Complex Geometry, and Mathematical Physics, an expository overview of superstring perturbation theory to two loop order is presented to an audience of mathematicians and physicists. Recent results on perturbative supersymmetry breaking effects in Heterotic string theory compactified on Z_2 \times Z_2 Calabi-Yau orbifolds, and the calculation of the two-loop vacuum energy in these theories are discussed in detail, and the appearance of a new modular identity with respect to Sp(4,Z)/Z_4 is reviewed.

Zhang-Kawazumi Invariants and Superstring Amplitudes

Invariance of Type IIB superstring theory under SL(2,Z) or S-duality implies dependence on the complex coupling T through real and complex modular forms in T. Their structure may be understood explicitly in an expansion of superstring corrections to Einstein's equations of gravity, in powers of derivatives D and curvature R. The perturbative loop expansion in the string coupling for the 4-string amplitude governs corrections of the form D^{2p} R^4 for all p. We show that, at two-loop order, the D^6 R^4 term is proportional to the integral of a modular invariant introduced by Zhang and Kawazumi in number theory and related to the Faltings delta-invariant studied for genus-two by Bost. The structure of two-loop superstring amplitudes for p>3 leads to higher invariants, which generalize Zhang--Kawazumi invariants at genus two. An explicit formula is derived for the unique higher invariant associated with order D^8 R^4. In an attempt to compare the prediction for the D^6 R^4 correction from superstring perturbation theory with the one produced by S-duality and supersymmetry of Type IIB, various reformulations of the invariant are given. This comparison with string theory leads to a predicted value for the integral of the Zhang-Kawazumi invariant over the moduli space of genus-two surfaces.

Two-loop vacuum energy for Calabi-Yau orbifold models

A precise evaluation of the two-loop vacuum energy is provided for certain Z_2 x Z_2 Calabi-Yau orbifold models in the Heterotic string. The evaluation is based on the recent general prescription for superstring perturbation theory in terms of integration over cycles in supermoduli space, implemented at two-loops with the gauge-fixing methods based on the natural projection of supermoduli space onto moduli space using the super-period matrix. It is shown that the contribution from the interior of supermoduli space (computed with the procedure that has been used in previous two-loop computations) vanishes identically for both the E_8 x E_8 and Spin (32)/Z_2 Heterotic strings. The contribution from the boundary of supermoduli space is also evaluated, and shown to vanish for the E_8 x E_8 string but not for the Spin (32)/Z_2 string, thus breaking supersymmetry in this last model. As a byproduct, the vacuum energy in Type II superstrings is shown to vanish as well for these orbifolds.

Charge Expulsion from Black Brane Horizons, and Holographic Quantum Criticality in the Plane

Quantum critical behavior in 2+1 dimensions is established via holographic methods in a 5+1-dimensional Einstein gravity theory with gauge potential form fields of rank 1 and 2. These fields are coupled to one another via a tri-linear Chern-Simons term with strength k. The quantum phase transition is physically driven by the expulsion of the electric charge from inside the black brane horizon to the outside, where it gets carried by the gauge fields which acquire charge thanks to the Chern-Simons interaction. At a critical value k=k_c, zero temperature, and any finite value of the magnetic field, the IR behavior is governed by a near-horizon Lifshitz geometry. The associated dynamical scaling exponent depends on the magnetic field. For k<k_c, the flow towards low temperature is governed by a Reissner-Nordstrom-like black brane whose charge and entropy density are non-vanishing at zero temperature. For k > k_c, the IR flow is towards the purely magnetic brane in AdS_6. Its near-horizon geometry is AdS_4 \times R^2, so that the entropy density vanishes quadratically with temperature, and all charge is carried by the gauge fields outside of the horizon.

Quantum Criticality via Magnetic Branes

Holographic methods are used to investigate the low temperature limit, including quantum critical behavior, of strongly coupled 4-dimensional gauge theories in the presence of an external magnetic field, and finite charge density. In addition to the metric, the dual gravity theory contains a Maxwell field with Chern-Simons coupling. In the absence of charge, the magnetic field induces an RG flow to an infrared AdS$_3 \times {\bf R}^2$ geometry, which is dual to a 2-dimensional CFT representing strongly interacting fermions in the lowest Landau level. Two asymptotic Virasoro algebras and one chiral Kac-Moody algebra arise as {\sl emergent symmetries} in the IR. Including a nonzero charge density reveals a quantum critical point when the magnetic field reaches a critical value whose scale is set by the charge density. The critical theory is probed by the study of long-distance correlation functions of the boundary stress tensor and current. All quantities of major physical interest in this system, such as critical exponents and scaling functions, can be computed analytically. We also study an asymptotically AdS$_6$ system whose magnetic field induced quantum critical point is governed by a IR Lifshitz geometry, holographically dual to a D=2+1 field theory. The behavior of these holographic theories shares important similarities with that of real world quantum critical systems obtained by tuning a magnetic field, and may be relevant to materials such as Strontium Ruthenates.

Charged Magnetic Brane Correlators and Twisted Virasoro Algebras

Prior work using gauge/gravity duality has established the existence of a quantum critical point in the phase diagram of 3+1-dimensional gauge theories at finite charge density and background magnetic field. The critical theory, obtained by tuning the dimensionless charge density to magnetic field ratio, exhibits nontrivial scaling in its thermodynamic properties, and an associated nontrivial dynamical critical exponent. In the present work, we analytically compute low energy correlation functions in the background of the charged magnetic brane solution to 4+1-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory, which represents the bulk description of the critical point. Results are obtained for neutral scalar operators, the stress tensor, and the U(1)-current. The theory is found to exhibit a twisted Virasoro algebra, constructed from a linear combination of the original stress tensor and chiral U(1)-current. The effective speed of light in the IR is renormalized downward for one chirality, but not the other, by finite density, a behavior that is consistent with a Luttinger liquid description of fermions in the lowest Landau level. The results obtained here do not directly shed light on the mechanism driving the phase transition, and we comment on why this is so.

Exact half-BPS string-junction solutions in six-dimensional supergravity

We construct SO(2,1) x SO(3)-invariant half-BPS solutions in six-dimensional (0,4) supergravity with m tensor multiplets. The space-time manifold of each one of these solutions consists of an AdS_2 x S^2 warped over a Riemann surface Sigma with boundary. The most general local solution is parametrized by one real harmonic function, and m+2 holomorphic functions which are subject to a quadratic constraint and a hermitian inequality, both of which are manifestly SO(2,m) invariant. Imposing suitable conditions on these harmonic and holomorphic functions, we construct globally regular supergravity solutions with N distinct AdS_3 x S^3 asymptotic regions and contractible Sigma. These solutions have an intricate moduli space, whose dimension equals 2(m+1)N -m-2 and matches the counting of three-form charge vectors and un-attracted scalars of the tensor multiplet. Exact explicit formulas for all supergravity fields are obtained in terms of the moduli. Our solutions give the near-horizon geometries for junctions of N self-dual strings in six dimensions, and are holographic duals to CFTs defined on N half-planes which share a common interface line. For m=5, the solutions lift to quarter-BPS solutions for six-dimensional (4,4) supergravity.

Simple holographic duals to boundary CFTs

By relaxing the regularity conditions imposed in arXiv:1107.1722 on half-BPS solutions to six-dimensional Type~4b supergravity, we enlarge the space of solutions to include two new half-BPS configurations, which we refer to as the \kap\ and the \funnel. We give evidence that the \kap\ and \funnel\ can be interpreted as fully back-reacted brane solutions with respectively $AdS_2$ and $AdS_2\times S^2$ world volumes. \kap\ and \funnel\ solutions with a single asymptotic $AdS_3 \times S^3$ region are constructed analytically. We argue that \kap\ solutions provide simple examples of holographic duals to boundary CFTs in two dimensions and present calculations of their holographic boundary entropy to support the BCFT dual picture.

Charged Magnetic Brane Solutions in AdS_5 and the fate of the third law of thermodynamics

We construct asymptotically AdS_5 solutions to 5-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory with Chern-Simons term which are dual to 4-dimensional gauge theories, including N=4 SYM theory, in the presence of a constant background magnetic field B and a uniform electric charge density ρ. For the solutions corresponding to supersymmetric gauge theories, we find numerically that a small magnetic field causes a drastic decrease in the entropy at low temperatures. The near-horizon AdS_2 \times R^3 geometry of the purely electrically charged brane thus appears to be unstable under the addition of a small magnetic field. Based on this observation, we propose a formulation of the third law of thermodynamics (or Nernst theorem) that can be applied to black holes in the AdS/CFT context. We also find interesting behavior for smaller, non-supersymmetric, values of the Chern-Simons coupling k. For k=1 we exhibit exact solutions corresponding to warped AdS_3 black holes, and show that these can be connected to asymptotically AdS_5 spacetime. For k\leq 1 the entropy appears to go to a finite value at extremality, but the solutions still exhibit a mild singularity at strictly zero temperature. In addition to our numerics, we carry out a complete perturbative analysis valid to order B^2, and find that this corroborates our numerical results insofar as they overlap.

Holographic Metamagnetism, Quantum Criticality, and Crossover Behavior

Using high-precision numerical analysis, we show that 3+1 dimensional gauge theories holographically dual to 4+1 dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory undergo a quantum phase transition in the presence of a finite charge density and magnetic field. The quantum critical theory has dynamical scaling exponent z=3, and is reached by tuning a relevant operator of scaling dimension 2. For magnetic field B above the critical value B_c, the system behaves as a Fermi liquid. As the magnetic field approaches B_c from the high field side, the specific heat coefficient diverges as 1/(B-B_c), and non-Fermi liquid behavior sets in. For B<B_c the entropy density s becomes non-vanishing at zero temperature, and scales according to s \sim \sqrt{B_c - B}. At B=B_c, and for small non-zero temperature T, a new scaling law sets in for which s\sim T^{1/3}. Throughout a small region surrounding the quantum critical point, the ratio s/T^{1/3} is given by a universal scaling function which depends only on the ratio (B-B_c)/T^{2/3}. The quantum phase transition involves non-analytic behavior of the specific heat and magnetization but no change of symmetry. Above the critical field, our numerical results are consistent with those predicted by the Hertz/Millis theory applied to metamagnetic quantum phase transitions, which also describe non-analytic changes in magnetization without change of symmetry. Such transitions have been the subject of much experimental investigation recently, especially in the compound Sr_3 Ru_2 O_7, and we comment on the connections.

Magnetic Brane Solutions in AdS

We construct asymptotically AdS_5 solutions of Einstein-Maxwell theory dual to N=4 SYM theory on R^{3,1} in the presence of a background magnetic field. The solutions interpolate between AdS_5 and a near horizon AdS_3\times T^2. The central charge of the near horizon region, and hence low temperature entropy of the solution, is found to be \sqrt{4\over 3} times that of free N=4 SYM theory. The entropy vanishes at zero temperature. We also present the generalization of these solutions to arbitrary spacetime dimensionality.

Magnetic Field Induced Quantum Criticality via new Asymptotically AdS_5 Solutions

Using analytical methods, we derive and extend previously obtained numerical results on the low temperature properties of holographic duals to four-dimensional gauge theories at finite density in a nonzero magnetic field. We find a new asymptotically AdS_5 solution representing the system at zero temperature. This solution has vanishing entropy density, and the charge density in the bulk is carried entirely by fluxes. The dimensionless magnetic field to charge density ratio for these solutions is bounded from below, with a quantum critical point appearing at the lower bound. Using matched asymptotic expansions, we extract the low temperature thermodynamics of the system. Above the critical magnetic field, the low temperature entropy density takes a simple form, linear in the temperature, and with a specific heat coefficient diverging at the critical point. At the critical magnetic field, we derive the scaling law s ~ T^{1/3} inferred previously from numerical analysis. We also compute the full scaling function describing the region near the critical point, and identify the dynamical critical exponent: z=3. These solutions are expected to holographically represent boundary theories in which strongly interacting fermions are filling up a Fermi sea. They are fully top-down constructions in which both the bulk and boundary theories have well known embeddings in string theory.

Open Worldsheets for Holographic Interfaces

Type IIB supergravity admits Janus and multi-Janus solutions with eight unbroken supersymmetries that are locally asymptotic to AdS_3 x S^3 x M_4 (where M_4 is either T^4 or K_3). These solutions are dual to two or more CFTs defined on half-planes which share a common line interface. Their geometry consists of an AdS_2 x S^2 x M_4 fibration over a simply connected Riemann surface Sigma with boundary. In the present paper, we show that regular exact solutions exist also for surfaces Sigma which are not simply connected. Specifically, we construct in detail solutions for which Sigma has the topology of an annulus. This construction is generalized to produce solutions for any surface Sigma with the topology of an open string worldsheet with g holes.

RG Flow of Magnetic Brane Correlators

The magnetic brane solution to five-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory provides a holographic description of the RG flow from four-dimensional Yang-Mills theory in the presence of a constant magnetic field to a two-dimensional low energy CFT. We compute two-point correlators involving the U(1) current and the stress tensor, and use their leading IR behavior to confirm the existence of a single chiral current algebra, and of left- and right-moving Virasoro algebras in the low energy CFT. The common central charge of the Virasoro algebras is found to match the Brown-Henneaux formula, while the level of the current algebra is related to the Chern-Simons coupling. The coordinate reparametrizations produced by the Virasoro algebras on the AdS_3 near-horizon geometry arise from physical non-pure gauge modes in the asymptotic AdS_5 region, thereby providing a concrete example for the emergence of IR symmetries. Finally, we interpret the infinite series of sub-leading IR contributions to the correlators in terms of certain double-trace interactions generated by the RG flow in the low energy CFT.

Rigidity of SU(2,2|2)-symmetric solutions in Type IIB

We investigate the existence of half-BPS solutions in Type IIB supergravity which are invariant under the superalgebra SU(2,2|2) realized on either AdS_5 x S^2 x S^1 or AdS_5 x S^3 warped over a Riemann surface Σwith boundary. We prove that, in both cases, the only solution is AdS_5 x S^5 itself. We argue that this result provides evidence for the non-existence of fully back-reacted intersecting D3/D7 branes with either AdS_5 x S^2 x S^1 x Σor AdS_5 x S^3 x Σnear-horizon limits.

Janus solutions in M-theory

We present a one-parameter deformation of the AdS_{4} x S^{7} vacuum, which is a regular solution in M-theory, invariant under SO(2,2) x SO(4) x SO(4), and which preserves 16 supersymmetries. The solution corresponds to a holographic realization of a Janus-like interface/defect theory, despite the absence of a dilaton in M-theory. The 2+1-dimensional CFT dual results from the maximally symmetric CFT through the insertion of a dimension 2 operator which is localized along a 1+1-dimensional linear interface/defect, thereby partially breaking the superconformal symmetry. The solution admits a regular ABJM reduction to a quotient solution which is invariant under SO(2,2) x SO(4) x U(1)^2, preserves 12 supersymmetries, and provides a Janus-like interface/defect solution in ABJM theory.

Exact Half-BPS Flux Solutions in M-theory I, Local Solutions

The complete eleven-dimensional supergravity solutions with 16 supersymmetries on manifolds of the form $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3 \times Σ$, with isometry $SO(2,2) \times SO(4) \times SO(4)$, and with either $AdS_4 \times S^7$ or $AdS_7 \times S^4$ boundary behavior, are obtained in exact form. The two-dimensional parameter space $Σ$ is a Riemann surface with boundary, over which the product space $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3$ is warped. By mapping the reduced BPS equations to an integrable system of the sine-Gordon/Liouville type, and then mapping this integrable system onto a linear equation, the general local solutions are constructed explicitly in terms of one harmonic function on $Σ$, and an integral transform of two further harmonic functions on $Σ$. The solutions to the BPS equations are shown to automatically solve the Bianchi identities and field equations for the 4-form field, as well as Einstein's equations. The solutions we obtain have non-vanishing 4-form field strength on each of the three factors of $AdS_3 \times S^3 \times S^3$, and include fully back-reacted M2-branes in $AdS_7 \times S^4$ and M5-branes in $AdS_4 \times S^7$. No interpolating solutions exist with mixed $AdS_4 \times S^7$ and $AdS_7 \times S^4$ boundary behavior. Global regularity of these local solutions, as well as the existence of further solutions with neither $AdS_4 \times S^7$ nor $AdS_7 \times S^4$ boundary behavior will be studied elsewhere.

Integrable systems from supergravity BPS equations

Integrable systems of the sine-Gordon/Liouville type, which arise from reducing the BPS equations for solutions invariant under 16 supersymmetries in Type IIB supergravity and M-theory, are shown to be special cases of an infinite family of integrable systems, parametrized by an arbitrary real function $f$ of a real variable. It is shown that, for each function $f$, this generalized integrable system may be mapped onto a system of linear equations, which in turn may be integrated in terms of the two linearly independent solutions of an ordinary linear second order differential equation which depends only on the function $f$.

Two-Loop Superstrings V: Gauge Slice Independence of the N-Point Function

A systematic construction of superstring scattering amplitudes for $N$ massless NS bosons to two loop order is given, based on the projection of supermoduli space onto super period matrices used earlier for the superstring measure in the first four papers of this series. The one important new difficulty arising for the $N$-point amplitudes is the fact that the projection onto super period matrices introduces corrections to the chiral vertex operators for massless NS bosons which are not pure (1,0) differential forms. However, it is proved that the chiral amplitudes are closed differential forms, and transform by exact differentials on the worldsheet under changes of gauge slices. Holomorphic amplitudes and independence of left from right movers are recaptured after the extraction of terms which are Dolbeault exact in one insertion point, and de Rham closed in the remaining points. This allows a construction of GSO projected, integrated superstring scattering amplitudes which are independent of the choice of gauge slices and have only physical kinematical singularities.

Asyzygies, modular forms, and the superstring measure I

The goal of this paper and of a subsequent continuation is to find some viable ansatze for the three-loop superstring chiral measure. For this, two alternative formulas are derived for the two-loop superstring chiral measure. Unlike the original formula, both alternates admit modular covariant generalizations to higher genus. One of these two generalizations is analyzed in detail in the present paper, with the analysis of the other left to the next paper of the series.

Graviton exchange and complete 4-point functions in the AdS/CFT correspondence

The graviton exchange diagram for the correlation function of arbitrary scalar operators is evaluated in anti-de Sitter space, AdS(d+1). This enables us to complete the computation of the 4-point amplitudes of dilaton and axion fields in IIB supergravity on AdS5 X S5. By the AdS/CFT correspondence, we obtain the 4-point functions of the marginal operators Tr (F^2+...) and Tr(F F~ +...) in N=4, d=4 SU(N) SYM at large N, large g^2 N. The short distance asymptotics of the amplitudes are studied. We find that in the direct channel the leading power singularity agrees with the expected contribution of the stress-energy tensor in a double OPE expansion. Logarithmic singularities occur in the complete 4-point functions at subleading orders.

The Operator Product Expansion of N=4 SYM and the 4-point Functions of Supergravity

We give a detailed Operator Product Expansion interpretation of the results for conformal 4-point functions computed from supergravity through the AdS/CFT duality. We show that for an arbitrary scalar exchange in AdS(d+1) all the power-singular terms in the direct channel limit (and only these terms) exactly match the corresponding contributions to the OPE of the operator dual to the exchanged bulk field and of its conformal descendents. The leading logarithmic singularities in the 4-point functions of protected N=4 super-Yang Mills operators (computed from IIB supergravity on AdS(5) X S(5) are interpreted as O(1/N^2) renormalization effects of the double-trace products appearing in the OPE. Applied to the 4-point functions of the operators Ophi ~ tr F^2 + ... and Oc ~ tr FF~ + ..., this analysis leads to the prediction that the double-trace composites [Ophi Oc] and [Ophi Ophi - Oc Oc] have anomalous dimension -16/N^2 in the large N, large g_{YM}^2 N limit. We describe a geometric picture of the OPE in the dual gravitational theory, for both the power-singular terms and the leading logarithms. We comment on several possible extensions of our results.

High energy scattering of non-critical strings

We summarize recent work, in which we consider scattering amplitudes of non-critical strings in the limit where the energy of all external states is large compared to the string tension. We show that the high energy limit is dominated by a saddle point that can be mapped onto an electrostatic equilibrium configuration of an assembly of charges associated with the external states, together with a density of charges arising from the Liouville field. The Liouville charges accumulate on line segments, which produce quadratic branch cuts on the worldsheet. The electrostatics problem is solved for string tree level in terms of hyperelliptic integrals and is given explicitly for the 3- and 4-point functions. For generic values of the central charge, the high energy limit behaves in a string-like fashion, with exponential energy dependence.

Effective Energy for QED$_{2+1}$ with Semi-Localized Static Magnetic Fields: A Solvable Model

We evaluate the exact ${\rm QED}_{2+1}$ effective energy for charged spin zero and spin half fields in the presence of a family of static magnetic field profiles localized in a strip of width $λ$. The exact result yields an infinite set of relations between the terms in the derivative expansion of the effective energy for a general magnetic field. Upon addition of the standard Maxwell magneto-static energy, the minimum energy configuration at fixed flux corresponds to a uniform magnetic field.

Invariant Effective Actions, Cohomology of Homogeneous Spaces and Anomalies

We construct the most general local effective actions for Goldstone boson fields associated with spontaneous symmetry breakdown from a group $G$ to a subgroup $H$. In a preceding paper, it was shown that any $G$-invariant term in the action, which results from a non-invariant Lagrangian density, corresponds to a non-trivial generator of the de Rham cohomology classes of $G/H$. Here, we present an explicit construction of all the generators of this cohomology for any coset space $G/H$ and compact, connected group $G$. Generators contributing to actions in 4-dimensional space-time arise either as products of generators of lower degree such as the Goldstone-Wilczek current, or are of the Wess-Zumino-Witten type. The latter arise if and only if $G$ has a non-zero $G$-invariant symmetric $d$-symbol, which vanishes when restricted to the subgroup $H$, i.e. when $G$ has anomalous representations in which $H$ is embedded in an anomaly free way. Coupling of additional gauge fields leads to actions whose gauge variation coincides with the chiral anomaly, which is carried here by Goldstone boson fields at tree level. Generators contributing to actions in 3-dimensional space-time arise as Chern-Simons terms evaluated on connections that are composites of the Goldstone field.

Dispersion Relations in String Theory

We analyze the analytic continuation of the formally divergent one-loop amplitude for scattering of the graviton multiplet in the Type II Superstring. In particular we obtain explicit double and single dispersion relations, formulas for all the successive branch cuts extending out to plus infinity, as well as for the decay rate of a massive string state of arbitrary mass 2N into two string states of lower mass. We compare our results with the box diagram in a superposition of $ϕ^3$-like field theories. The stringy effects are traced to a convergence problem in this superposition.
