Harmonic analysis of 2d CFT partition functions

We apply the theory of harmonic analysis on the fundamental domain of $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ to partition functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We decompose the partition function of $c$ free bosons on a Narain lattice into eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of worldsheet moduli space $\mathbb H/SL(2,\mathbb Z)$, and of target space moduli space $O(c,c;\mathbb Z)\backslash O(c,c;\mathbb R)/O(c)\times O(c)$. This decomposition manifests certain properties of Narain theories and ensemble averages thereof. We extend the application of spectral theory to partition functions of general two-dimensional conformal field theories, and explore its meaning in connection to AdS$_3$ gravity. An implication of harmonic analysis is that the local operator spectrum is fully determined by a certain subset of degeneracies.

Harnessing S-Duality in $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM & Supergravity as $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$-Averaged Strings

We develop a new approach to extracting the physical consequences of S-duality of four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ super Yang-Mills (SYM) and its string theory dual, based on $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ spectral theory. We observe that CFT observables $\mathcal{O}$, invariant under $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ transformations of a complexified gauge coupling $τ$, admit a unique spectral decomposition into a basis of square-integrable functions. This formulation has direct implications for the analytic structure of $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM data, both perturbatively and non-perturbatively in all parameters. For example, $k$-instanton sectors are uniquely determined by the zero- and one-instanton sectors, and Borel summable series around $k$-instantons have convergence radii with simple $k$-dependence. In large $N$ limits, we derive the existence and scaling of non-perturbative effects, which we exhibit for certain $\mathcal{N}=4$ SYM observables. An elegant benchmark for these techniques is the integrated four-point function conjecturally determined by [arXiv:2102.09537] for all $τ$ for $SU(N)$ gauge group; we derive and elucidate its form. These results have ramifications for holography. We explain how $\langle\mathcal{O}\rangle$, the ensemble average over the $\mathcal{N}=4$ supersymmetric conformal manifold with respect to the Zamolodchikov measure, is cleanly isolated by the spectral decomposition. We prove that the large $N$ limit of $\langle\mathcal{O}\rangle$ equals the large $N$, large 't Hooft coupling limit of $\mathcal{O}$. Holographically speaking, $\langle\mathcal{O}\rangle = \mathcal{O}_{\rm sugra}$, its value in type IIB supergravity on AdS$_5 \times$ S$^5$. This result, which extends to all orders in $1/N$, embeds ensemble averaging into the traditional AdS/CFT paradigm. The statistics of the $SL(2,\mathbb{Z})$ ensemble exhibit both perturbative and non-perturbative $1/N$ effects.

Discreteness and Integrality in Conformal Field Theory

Various observables in compact CFTs are required to obey positivity, discreteness, and integrality. Positivity forms the crux of the conformal bootstrap, but understanding of the abstract implications of discreteness and integrality for the space of CFTs is lacking. We systematically study these constraints in two-dimensional, non-holomorphic CFTs, making use of two main mathematical results. First, we prove a theorem constraining the behavior near the cusp of integral, vector-valued modular functions. Second, we explicitly construct non-factorizable, non-holomorphic cuspidal functions satisfying discreteness and integrality, and prove the non-existence of such functions once positivity is added. Application of these results yields several bootstrap-type bounds on OPE data of both rational and irrational CFTs, including some powerful bounds for theories with conformal manifolds, as well as insights into questions of spectral determinacy. We prove that in rational CFT, the spectrum of operator twists $t\geq {c \over 12}$ is uniquely determined by its complement. Likewise, we argue that in generic CFTs, the spectrum of operator dimensions $Δ> {c-1\over 12}$ is uniquely determined by its complement, absent fine-tuning in a sense we articulate. Finally, we discuss implications for black hole physics and the (non-)uniqueness of a possible ensemble interpretation of AdS$_3$ gravity.

Unitarity Methods in AdS/CFT

We develop a systematic unitarity method for loop-level AdS scattering amplitudes, dual to non-planar CFT correlators, from both bulk and boundary perspectives. We identify cut operators acting on bulk amplitudes that put virtual lines on shell, and show how the conformal partial wave decomposition of the amplitudes may be efficiently computed by gluing lower-loop amplitudes. A central role is played by the double discontinuity of the amplitude, which has a direct relation to these cuts. We then exhibit a precise, intuitive map between the diagrammatic approach in the bulk using cutting and gluing, and the algebraic, holographic unitarity method of arXiv:1612.03891 that constructs the non-planar correlator from planar CFT data. Our analysis focuses mostly on four-point, one-loop diagrams -- we compute cuts of the scalar bubble, triangle and box, as well as some one-particle reducible diagrams -- in addition to the five-point tree and four-point double-ladder. Analogies with S-matrix unitarity methods are drawn throughout.

Bounding the Space of Holographic CFTs with Chaos

Thermal states of quantum systems with many degrees of freedom are subject to a bound on the rate of onset of chaos, including a bound on the Lyapunov exponent, $λ_L\leq 2π/β$. We harness this bound to constrain the space of putative holographic CFTs and their would-be dual theories of AdS gravity. First, by studying out-of-time-order four-point functions, we discuss how $λ_L=2π/β$ in ordinary two-dimensional holographic CFTs is related to properties of the OPE at strong coupling. We then rule out the existence of unitary, sparse two-dimensional CFTs with large central charge and a set of higher spin currents of bounded spin; this implies the inconsistency of weakly coupled AdS$_3$ higher spin gravities without infinite towers of gauge fields, such as the $SL(N)$ theories. This fits naturally with the structure of higher-dimensional gravity, where finite towers of higher spin fields lead to acausality. On the other hand, unitary CFTs with classical $W_{\infty}[λ]$ symmetry, dual to 3D Vasiliev or hs[$λ$] higher spin gravities, do not violate the chaos bound, instead exhibiting no chaos: $λ_L=0$. Independently, we show that such theories violate unitarity for $|λ|>2$. These results encourage a tensionless string theory interpretation of the 3D Vasiliev theory. We also perform some CFT calculations of chaos in Rindler space in various dimensions.

Small Black Holes and Near-Extremal CFTs

Pure theories of AdS$_3$ quantum gravity are conjectured to be dual to CFTs with sparse spectra of light primary operators. The sparsest possible spectrum consistent with modular invariance includes only black hole states above the vacuum. Witten conjectured the existence of a family of extremal CFTs, which realize this spectrum for all admissible values of the central charge. We consider the quantum corrections to the classical spectrum, and propose a specific modification of Witten's conjecture which takes into account the existence of "small" black hole states. These have zero classical horizon area, with a calculable entropy attributed solely to loop effects. Our conjecture passes various consistency checks, especially when generalized to include theories with supersymmetry. In theories with $\mathcal{N}=2$ supersymmetry, this "near-extremal CFT" proposal precisely evades the no-go results of Gaberdiel et al.

General Results for Higher Spin Wilson Lines and Entanglement in Vasiliev Theory

We develop tools for the efficient evaluation of Wilson lines in 3D higher spin gravity, and use these to compute entanglement entropy in the hs$[λ]$ Vasiliev theory that governs the bulk side of the duality proposal of Gaberdiel and Gopakumar. Our main technical advance is the determination of SL(N) Wilson lines for arbitrary $N$, which, in suitable cases, enables us to analytically continue to hs$[λ]$ via $N \rightarrow -λ$. We apply this result to compute various quantities of interest, including entanglement entropy expanded perturbatively in the background higher spin charge, chemical potential, and interval size. This includes a computation of entanglement entropy in the higher spin black hole of the Vasiliev theory. These results are consistent with conformal field theory calculations. We also provide an alternative derivation of the Wilson line, by showing how it arises naturally from earlier work on scalar correlators in higher spin theory. The general picture that emerges is consistent with the statement that the SL(N) Wilson line computes the semiclassical $W_N$ vacuum block, and our results provide an explicit result for this object.

Positivity, negativity, and entanglement

We explore properties of the universal terms in the entanglement entropy and logarithmic negativity in 4d CFTs, aiming to clarify the ways in which they behave like the analogous entanglement measures in quantum mechanics. We show that, unlike entanglement entropy in finite-dimensional systems, the sign of the universal part of entanglement entropy is indeterminate. In particular, if and only if the central charges obey $a>c$, the entanglement across certain classes of entangling surfaces can become arbitrarily negative, depending on the geometry and topology of the surface. The negative contribution is proportional to the product of $a-c$ and the genus of the surface. Similarly, we show that in $a>c$ theories, the logarithmic negativity does not always exceed the entanglement entropy.

Renyi Entropies, the Analytic Bootstrap, and 3D Quantum Gravity at Higher Genus

We compute the contribution of the vacuum Virasoro representation to the genus-two partition function of an arbitrary CFT with central charge $c>1$. This is the perturbative pure gravity partition function in three dimensions. We employ a sewing construction, in which the partition function is expressed as a sum of sphere four-point functions of Virasoro vacuum descendants. For this purpose, we develop techniques to efficiently compute correlation functions of holomorphic operators, which by crossing symmetry are determined exactly by a finite number of OPE coefficients; this is an analytic implementation of the conformal bootstrap. Expanding the results in $1/c$, corresponding to the semiclassical bulk gravity expansion, we find that---unlike at genus one---the result does not truncate at finite loop order. Our results also allow us to extend earlier work on multiple-interval Renyi entropies and on the partition function in the separating degeneration limit.

Semiclassical Virasoro Blocks from AdS$_3$ Gravity

We present a unified framework for the holographic computation of Virasoro conformal blocks at large central charge. In particular, we provide bulk constructions that correctly reproduce all semiclassical Virasoro blocks that are known explicitly from conformal field theory computations. The results revolve around the use of geodesic Witten diagrams, recently introduced in arXiv:1508.00501, evaluated in locally AdS$_3$ geometries generated by backreaction of heavy operators. We also provide an alternative computation of the heavy-light semiclassical block -- in which two external operators become parametrically heavy -- as a certain scattering process involving higher spin gauge fields in AdS$_3$; this approach highlights the chiral nature of Virasoro blocks. These techniques may be systematically extended to compute corrections to these blocks and to interpolate amongst the different semiclassical regimes.

Virasoro conformal blocks in closed form

Virasoro conformal blocks are fixed in principle by symmetry, but a closed-form expression is unknown in the general case. In this work, we provide three closed-form expansions for the four-point Virasoro blocks on the sphere, for arbitrary operator dimensions and central charge $c$. We do so by solving known recursion relations. One representation is a sum over hypergeometric global blocks, whose coefficients we provide at arbitrary level. Another is a sum over semiclassical Virasoro blocks obtained in the limit in which two external operator dimensions scale linearly with large $c$. In both cases, the $1/c$ expansion of the Virasoro blocks is easily extracted. We discuss applications of these expansions to entanglement and thermality in conformal field theories and particle scattering in three-dimensional quantum gravity.

Witten Diagrams Revisited: The AdS Geometry of Conformal Blocks

We develop a new method for decomposing Witten diagrams into conformal blocks. The steps involved are elementary, requiring no explicit integration, and operate directly in position space. Central to this construction is an appealingly simple answer to the question: what object in AdS computes a conformal block? The answer is a "geodesic Witten diagram," which is essentially an ordinary exchange Witten diagram, except that the cubic vertices are not integrated over all of AdS, but only over bulk geodesics connecting the boundary operators. In particular, we consider the case of four-point functions of scalar operators, and show how to easily reproduce existing results for the relevant conformal blocks in arbitrary dimension.

A universal feature of CFT Renyi entropy

We show that for a d-dimensional CFT in flat space, the Renyi entropy S_q across a spherical entangling surface has the following property: in an expansion around q=1, the first correction to the entanglement entropy is proportional to C_T, the coefficient of the stress tensor vacuum two-point function, with a fixed d-dependent coefficient. This is equivalent to a similar statement about the free energy of CFTs living on S^1 x H^{d-1} with inverse temperature β=2πq. In addition to furnishing a direct argument applicable to all CFTs, we exhibit this result using a handful of gravity and field theory computations. Knowledge of C_T thus doubles as knowledge of Renyi entropies in the neighborhood of q=1, which we use to establish new results in 3d vector models at large N.

Comments on Renyi entropy in AdS$_3$/CFT$_2$

We extend and refine recent results on Renyi entropy in two-dimensional conformal field theories at large central charge. To do so, we examine the effects of higher spin symmetry and of allowing unequal left and right central charges, at leading and subleading order in large total central charge. The result is a straightforward generalization of previously derived formulae, supported by both gravity and CFT arguments. The preceding statements pertain to CFTs in the ground state, or on a circle at unequal left- and right-moving temperatures. For the case of two short intervals in a CFT ground state, we derive certain universal contributions to Renyi and entanglement entropy from Virasoro primaries of arbitrary scaling weights, to leading and next-to-leading order in the interval size; this result applies to any CFT. When these primaries are higher spin currents, such terms are placed in one-to-one correspondence with terms in the bulk 1-loop determinants for higher spin gauge fields propagating on handlebody geometries.

Holographic entanglement entropy and gravitational anomalies

We study entanglement entropy in two-dimensional conformal field theories with a gravitational anomaly. In theories with gravity duals, this anomaly is holographically represented by a gravitational Chern-Simons term in the bulk action. We show that the anomaly broadens the Ryu-Takayanagi minimal worldline into a ribbon, and that the anomalous contribution to the CFT entanglement entropy is given by the twist in this ribbon. The entanglement functional may also be interpreted as the worldline action for a spinning particle -- that is, an anyon -- in three-dimensional curved spacetime. We demonstrate that the minimization of this action results in the Mathisson-Papapetrou-Dixon equations of motion for a spinning particle in three dimensions. We work out several simple examples and demonstrate agreement with CFT calculations.

Renyi entropy, stationarity, and entanglement of the conformal scalar

We extend previous work on the perturbative expansion of the Renyi entropy, $S_q$, around $q=1$ for a spherical entangling surface in a general CFT. Applied to conformal scalar fields in various spacetime dimensions, the results appear to conflict with the known conformal scalar Renyi entropies. On the other hand, the perturbative results agree with known Renyi entropies in a variety of other theories, including theories of free fermions and vector fields and theories with Einstein gravity duals. We propose a resolution stemming from a careful consideration of boundary conditions near the entangling surface. This is equivalent to a proper treatment of total-derivative terms in the definition of the modular Hamiltonian. As a corollary, we are able to resolve an outstanding puzzle in the literature regarding the Renyi entropy of ${\cal N}=4$ super-Yang-Mills near $q=1$. A related puzzle regards the question of stationarity of the renormalized entanglement entropy (REE) across a circle for a (2+1)-dimensional massive scalar field. We point out that the boundary contributions to the modular Hamiltonian shed light on the previously-observed non-stationarity. Moreover, IR divergences appear in perturbation theory about the massless fixed point that inhibit our ability to reliably calculate the REE at small non-zero mass.

Universality in the geometric dependence of Renyi entropy

We derive several new results for Renyi entropy, $S_n$, across generic entangling surfaces. We establish a perturbative expansion of the Renyi entropy, valid in generic quantum field theories, in deformations of a given density matrix. When applied to even-dimensional conformal field theories, these results lead to new constraints on the $n$-dependence, independent of any perturbative expansion. In 4d CFTs, we show that the $n$-dependence of the universal part of the ground state Renyi entropy for entangling surfaces with vanishing extrinsic curvature contribution is in fact fully determined by the Renyi entropy across a sphere in flat space. Using holography, we thus provide the first computations of Renyi entropy across non-spherical entangling surfaces in strongly coupled 4d CFTs. Furthermore, we address the possibility that in a wide class of 4d CFTs, the flat space spherical Renyi entropy also fixes the $n$-dependence of the extrinsic curvature contribution, and hence that of arbitrary entangling surfaces. Our results have intriguing implications for the structure of generic modular Hamiltonians.

Matching four-point functions in higher spin AdS_3/CFT_2

Working in the context of the proposed duality between 3D higher spin gravity and 2D W_N minimal model CFTs, we compute a class of four-point functions in the bulk and on the boundary, and demonstrate precise agreement between them. This is the first computation of a correlator in 3D higher spin gravity whose functional form is not fixed by conformal invariance. In the bulk we make use of elegant methods to solve the scalar field equation using only matrix manipulations, while on the CFT side we employ the Coulomb gas representation. Comparison is made in the semiclassical limit, in which the central charge is taken to infinity at fixed N. Along the way, we establish the rules for computing correlation functions of multi-trace operators in higher spin gravity. The method involves solving the scalar master field equation in a general representation of the bulk gauge algebra. Although most of our work is carried out for the bulk theory based on sl(N) x sl(N), we also discuss how our methods can be adapted to the hs[λ] x hs[λ] theory, which is relevant in the 't Hooft limit.

Probing higher spin black holes

We study the propagation of scalar fields on various backgrounds in three dimensional higher spin gravity. Our main emphasis is on obtaining the bulk-boundary propagator, which can be efficiently computed using group theory and higher spin gauge symmetry and from which we can extract scalar two-point functions in the dual CFT. As an illustration, we obtain a simple closed form expression for the propagator in a particular spin-3 deformation of AdS_3. In the case of higher spin black holes, we prove on general grounds that the propagator respects an imaginary time periodicity consistent with the thermal nature of the black hole; in doing so we make progress in understanding the group exponentiation of the higher spin Lie algebra hs[λ], and its center. We also explicitly compute the propagator in the black hole background at first order in the higher spin charge. Evaluated on the Lorentzian section, the result is consistent with an interpretation in which the black hole has two causally disconnected boundary components, as is the case for the BTZ black hole.

Probing higher spin black holes from CFT

In a class of 2D CFTs with higher spin symmetry, we compute thermal two-point functions of certain scalar primary operators in the presence of nonzero chemical potential for higher spin charge. These are shown to agree with the same quantity calculated holographically using scalar fields propagating in a charged black hole background of 3D higher spin gravity. This match serves as further evidence for the duality between W_N minimal models at large central charge and 3D higher spin gravity. It also supports a recent prescription for computing boundary correlators of multi-trace scalar primary operators in higher spin theories.

Black holes in three dimensional higher spin gravity: A review

We review recent progress in the construction of black holes in three dimensional higher spin gravity theories. Starting from spin-3 gravity and working our way toward the theory of an infinite tower of higher spins coupled to matter, we show how to harness higher spin gauge invariance to consistently generalize familiar notions of black holes. We review the construction of black holes with conserved higher spin charges and the computation of their partition functions to leading asymptotic order. In view of the AdS/CFT correspondence as applied to certain vector-like conformal field theories with extended conformal symmetry, we successfully compare to CFT calculations in a generalized Cardy regime. A brief recollection of pertinent aspects of ordinary gravity is also given.

Hyperscaling violation from supergravity

In recent applications of AdS/CFT to condensed matter physics, a metric that transforms covariantly under dilatation has been argued to signal hyperscaling violation in a dual quantum field theory. We contextualize and introduce large, in some cases infinite, families of supergravity solutions with this property, focusing on scale covariant generalizations of AdS and Schrodinger spacetimes. These embeddings rely on various aspects of dimensional reduction and flux compactification of eleven-dimensional supergravity. Our top-down approach can be viewed as a partial holographic classification of the landscape of strongly coupled, UV complete quantum field theories with hyperscaling violation.

The semiclassical limit of W_N CFTs and Vasiliev theory

We propose a refinement of the Gaberdiel-Gopakumar duality conjecture between W_N conformal field theories and 2+1-dimensional higher spin gravity. We make an identification of generic representations of the W_N CFT in the semiclassical limit with bulk configurations. By studying the spectrum of the semiclassical limit of the W_N theories and mapping to solutions of Euclidean Vasiliev gravity at λ=-N, we propose that the `light states' of the W_N minimal models in the 't Hooft limit map not to the conical defects of the Vasiliev theory, but rather to bound states of perturbative scalar fields with these defects. Evidence for this identification comes from comparing charges and from holographic relations between CFT null states and bulk symmetries. We also make progress in understanding the coupling of scalar matter to sl(N) gauge fields.

Partition functions of higher spin black holes and their CFT duals

We find black hole solutions of D=3 higher-spin gravity in the hs[λ] + hs[λ] Chern-Simons formulation. These solutions have a spin-3 chemical potential, and carry nonzero values for an infinite number of charges of the asymptotic W_{\infty}[λ] symmetry. Applying a previously developed set of rules for ensuring smooth solutions, we compute the black hole partition function perturbatively in the chemical potential. At λ=0, 1 we compare our result against boundary CFT computations involving free bosons and fermions, and find perfect agreement. For generic λ we expect that our gravity result will match the partition function of the coset CFTs conjectured by Gaberdiel and Gopakumar to be dual to these bulk theories.

Spacetime Geometry in Higher Spin Gravity

Higher spin gravity is an interesting toy model of stringy geometry. Particularly intriguing is the presence of higher spin gauge transformations that redefine notions of invariance in gravity: the existence of event horizons and singularities in the metric become gauge dependent. In previous work, solutions of spin-3 gravity in the SL(3,R) x SL(3,R) Chern-Simons formulation were found, and were proposed to play the role of black holes. However, in the gauge employed there, the spacetime metric describes a traversable wormhole connecting two asymptotic regions, rather than a black hole. In this paper, we show explicitly that under a higher spin gauge transformation these solutions can be transformed to describe black holes with manifestly smooth event horizons, thereby changing the spacetime causal structure. A related aspect is that the Chern-Simons theory admits two distinct AdS_3 vacua with different asymptotic W-algebra symmetries and central charges. We show that these vacua are connected by an explicit, Lorentz symmetry-breaking RG flow, of which our solutions represent finite temperature generalizations. These features will be present in any SL(N,R) x SL(N,R) Chern-Simons theory of higher spins.

Universality and exactness of Schrodinger geometries in string and M-theory

We propose an organizing principle for classifying and constructing Schrodinger-invariant solutions within string theory and M-theory, based on the idea that such solutions represent nonlinear completions of linearized vector and graviton Kaluza-Klein excitations of AdS compactifications. A crucial simplification, derived from the symmetry of AdS, is that the nonlinearities appear only quadratically. Accordingly, every AdS vacuum admits infinite families of Schrodinger deformations parameterized by the dynamical exponent z. We exhibit the ease of finding these solutions by presenting three new constructions: two from M5 branes, both wrapped and extended, and one from the D1-D5 (and S-dual F1-NS5) system. From the boundary perspective, perturbing a CFT by a null vector operator can lead to nonzero beta-functions for spin-2 operators; however, symmetry restricts them to be at most quadratic in couplings. This point of view also allows us to easily prove nonrenormalization theorems: for any Sch(z) solution of two-derivative supergravity constructed in the above manner, z is uncorrected to all orders in higher derivative corrections if the deforming KK mode lies in a short multiplet of an AdS supergroup. Furthermore, we find infinite classes of 1/4 BPS solutions with 4-,5- and 7-dimensional Schrodinger symmetry that are exact.

Domain Wall Holography for Finite Temperature Scaling Solutions

We investigate a class of near-extremal solutions of Einstein-Maxwell-scalar theory with electric charge and power law scaling, dual to charged IR phases of relativistic field theories at low temperature. These are exact solutions of theories with domain wall vacua; hence, we use nonconformal holography to relate the bulk and boundary theories. We numerically construct a global interpolating solution between the IR charged solutions and the UV domain wall vacua for arbitrary physical choices of Lagrangian parameters. By passing to a conformal frame in which the domain wall metric becomes that of AdS, we uncover a generalized scale invariance of the IR scaling solution, indicating a connection to the physics of Lifshitz fixed points. Finally, guided by effective field theoretic principles and the physics of nonconformal D-branes, we argue for the applicability of domain wall holography even in theories with AdS critical points, namely those theories for which a scalar potential is dominated by a single exponential term over a large range.
