Deep Forest with Hashing Screening and Window Screening

As a novel deep learning model, gcForest has been widely used in various applications. However, the current multi-grained scanning of gcForest produces many redundant feature vectors, and this increases the time cost of the model. To screen out redundant feature vectors, we introduce a hashing screening mechanism for multi-grained scanning and propose a model called HW-Forest which adopts two strategies, hashing screening and window screening. HW-Forest employs perceptual hashing algorithm to calculate the similarity between feature vectors in hashing screening strategy, which is used to remove the redundant feature vectors produced by multi-grained scanning and can significantly decrease the time cost and memory consumption. Furthermore, we adopt a self-adaptive instance screening strategy to improve the performance of our approach, called window screening, which can achieve higher accuracy without hyperparameter tuning on different datasets. Our experimental results show that HW-Forest has higher accuracy than other models, and the time cost is also reduced.

Design considerations and performance analysis of fiber laser array system for structuring orbital angular momentum beams

Since the advent of optical orbital angular momentum (OAM), advances in the generation and manipulation of OAM beams have continuously impacted on intriguing applications including optical communication, optical tweezers, and remote sensing. To realize the generation of high-power and fast switchable OAM beams, coherent combining of fiber lasers offers a promising way. Here in this contribution, we comprehensively investigate the coherent fiber laser array system for structuring OAM beams in terms of the design considerations and performance analysis. The performance metric and evaluation method of the laser array system are presented and introduced. Accordingly, the effect of the main sections of the laser array system, namely the high-power laser sources, emitting array configuration, and dynamic control system, on the performance of the output coherently combined OAM beams is evaluated, which reveals the system tolerance of perturbative factors and provides the guidance on system design and optimization. This work could provide beneficial reference on the practical implementation of spatially structuring high-power, fast switchable OAM beams with fiber laser arrays.

QoS-Driven Video Uplinking in NOMA-Based IoT

In recent years, with the explosive growth of visual sensors and a large number of related video applications in Internet of Things (IoT), massive video data is generated by IoT devices. Since the volume of video data is far greater than traditional data in IoT, it is challenging to ensure high Quality of Service (QoS) for video uplinking in IoT. To address this challenge, we integrate non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) and scalable video coding (SVC) in IoT. To improve the video quality, we formulate a power allocation problem to maximize the average QoS in the proposed integrated system. Due to that the problem is non-convex, we transform it into a monotonic problem based on its hidden monotonicity. Then a power allocation algorithm based on polyblock outer approximation is proposed to solve the problem effectively. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm outperforms existing OMA and NOMA based schemes for video uplinking in IoT in terms of QoS and energy efficiency.

User-Centric Cooperative MEC Service Offloading

Mobile edge computing provides users with a cloud environment close to the edge of the wireless network, supporting the computing intensive applications that have low latency requirements. The combination of offloading with the wireless communication brings new challenges. This paper investigates the service caching problem during the long-term service offloading in the user-centric wireless network. To meet the time-varying service demands of a typical user, a cooperative service caching strategy in the unit of the base station (BS) cluster is proposed. We formulate the caching problem as a time-averaged completion delay minimization problem and transform it into time-decoupled instantaneous problems with a virtual caching cost queue at first. Then we propose a distributed algorithm which is based on the consensus-sharing alternating direction method of multipliers to solve each instantaneous problem. The simulations validate that the proposed online distributed service caching algorithm can achieve the optimal time-averaged completion delay of offloading tasks with the smallest caching cost in the unit of a BS cluster.

Effects of four-wave-mixing in high-power Raman fiber amplifiers

In this work, we derive and present the coupled amplitude equations to describe the evolutions of different spectral components in different transverse modes for Raman fiber amplifiers (RFAs). Both the effects of the four-wave-mixing in the fundamental mode (FM FWM) and the inter-modal four-wave-mixing (IM FWM) on high-power RFAs are demonstrated through numerical simulations. Specifically, effective FM FWM interactions could occur and lead to a drop of the Raman threshold for RFAs by over 50%, despite that the corresponding wave-vector mismatch is rather big. In addition, the IM FWM could also impact the Raman threshold for RFAs with additional generation of the first order Raman Stokes light in the higher-order mode. We also investigate the effects of the intensity fluctuations in the initial inserted pump and seed lasers on high-power RFAs. It reveals that the temporal stability of the initial inserted pump laser have much more significant impacts on high-power RFAs than that of the initial inserted seed laser. Notably, through applying temporal stable laser as the initial inserted pump laser, both the FM FWM and IM FWM effects could be effectively suppressed, and the Raman threshold for high-power RFAs could be increased by over twice.

Kilowatt-level Yb-Raman fiber amplifier with narrow-linewidth and near-diffraction-limited beam quality

By focusing on a typical emitting wavelength of 1120 nm as an example, we present the first demonstration of a high-efficiency, narrow-linewidth kilowatt-level all-fiber amplifier based on hybrid ytterbium-Raman (Yb-Raman) gains. Notably, two temporally stable, phase-modulated single-frequency lasers operating at 1064 nm and 1120nm, respectively, were applied in the fiber amplifier, to alleviate the spectral broadening of the 1120 signal laser and suppress the stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) effect simultaneously. Over 1 kW narrow-linewidth 1120 nm signal laser was obtained with a slope efficiency of ~ 77% and a beam quality of M2~1.21. The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise in the fiber amplifier was effectively suppressed by incorporating an ASE-filtering system between the seed laser and the main amplifier. Further examination of the influence of power ratios between the two seed lasers on the conversion efficiency had proved that the presented amplifier could work efficiently when the power ratio of 1120 nm seed laser ranged from 31% to 61%. Overall, this setup could provide a well reference for obtaining high power narrow-linewidth fiber lasers operating within 1100-1200 nm.

Influence of core NA on Thermal-Induced Mode Instabilities in High Power Fiber Amplifiers

We report on the influence of core NA on thermal-induced mode instabilities (MI) in high power fiber amplifiers. Influence of core NA and V-parameter on MI has been investigated numerically. It shows that core NA has larger influence on MI for fibers with smaller core-cladding-ratio, and the influence of core NA on threshold is more obvious when the amplifiers are pumped at 915nm. The dependence of threshold on V-parameter revealed that the threshold increases linearly as V-parameter decreases when V-parameter is larger than 3.5, and the threshold shows exponentially increase as V-parameter decreases when V-parameter is less than 3.5. We also discussed the effect of linewidth on MI, which indicates that the influence of linewidth can be neglected for linewidth smaller than 1nm when the fiber core NA is smaller than 0.07 and fiber length is shorter than 20m. Fiber amplifiers with different core NA were experimentally analyzed, which agreed with the theoretical predictions.

Polarization Effects on Thermal-Induced Mode Instabilities in High Power Fiber Lasers

We present detailed studies of the effect of polarization on thermal-induced mode instability (MI) in ytterbium-doped fiber amplifiers. Based on a steady-state theoretical model, which takes both electric fields along the two principal axes into consideration, the effect of polarization effects on the gain of Stokes wave was analyzed, which shows that the polarization characteristics of the fiber laser have no impact on the threshold of MI. Experimental validation of the theoretical analysis is presented with experimental results agreeing well with the theoretical results, in which polarization-maintained and non-polarization-maintained fiber lasers with core/inner cladding diameter of 30/250um and core NA of 0.07 were employed. The MI threshold power is measured to be about 367~386W.

Study of dopant concentrations on thermal induced mode instability in high power fiber amplifiers

Dependence of mode instabilities (MI) on ytterbium dopant concentrations in high power fiber amplifiers has been investigated. It is theoretically shown that, by only varying the fiber length to maintain the same total small-signal pump absorption, the MI threshold is independent of dopant concentration. MI thresholds of gain fibers with ytterbium dopant concentration of 5.93X10^25/m3 and 1.02X10^26/m3 have been measured, which exhibit similar thresholds and agree with theoretical results. The result indicates that heavy doping of active fiber can be adopted to suppress nonlinear effects without decreasing MI threshold, which provides a method of maximizing the power output of fiber laser, taking into account the stimulated Brillouin scattering, stimulated Raman Scattering, and MI thresholds simultaneously.

Study of wavelength dependence of mode instability based on a semi-analytical model

We present theoretical study of wavelength dependence of mode instability (MI) in high power fiber lasers, which employs an improved semi-analytical theoretical model. The influence of pump / seed wavelength and photodarkening on threshold has been studied. The results indicate promising MI suppression through pumping or seeding at an appropriate wavelength. Small amounts of photodarkening can lead to significant impact on MI.

1.3kW monolithic linearly-polarized single-mode MOPA and strategies for mitigating mode instabilities

We report on the high power amplification of 1064nm linearly-polarized laser in all-fiber polarization-maintained MOPA, which can operate at output power level of 1.3kW. The main amplifier was pumped with six 915nm laser diodes, and the slope efficiency is 65.3%. The beam quality (M2) was measured to be <1.2 at full power operation. The polarization extinction rate of the fiber amplifier was measured to be above 94% before mode instabilities (MI) sets in, which reduced to about 90% after the onset of MI. Power scaling capability of strategies for suppressing MI is analyzed based on a novel semi-analytical model, the theoretical results of which agree with the experimental results. It shows that mitigating MI by coiling the gain fiber is an effective and practical way in standard double-cladding large mode area fiber, and, by tight coiling of the gain fiber to the radius of 5.5cm, the MI threshold can be increased to 3 times higher than that without coiling or loose coiling. Experimental study has been carried out to verify the idea, which has proved that MI was suppressed successfully in the amplifier by tight coiling.

Mitigating of Modal Instabilities in Linearly-Polarized Fiber Amplifiers by Shifting Pump Wavelength

We investigated the effct of pump wavelength on the modal instabilities (MI) in high power linearly-polarized Yb-doped fiber amplifiers. We built a novel semi-analytical model to determine the frequency coupling characteristics and power threshold of MI, which indicates promising MI suppression through pumping at an appropriate wavelength. By pumping at 915nm, the threshold can be enhanced by a factor of 2.36 as compared to that pumped at 976nm. Based on a high power linearly-polarized fiber amplifier platform, we studied the influence of pump wavelength experimentally. The threshold has been increased by a factor of 2 at 915nm, which agrees with the theoretical calculation and verified our theoretical model. Furthermore, we show that MI suppression by detuning the pump wavelength is weakened for fiber with large core-to-cladding ratio.
