Whitham Deformations of Seiberg-Witten Curves for Classical Gauge Groups

Gorsky et al. presented an explicit construction of Whitham deformations of the Seiberg-Witten curve for the $SU(N+1)$ $\calN = 2$ SUSY Yang-Mills theory. We extend their result to all classical gauge groups and some other cases such as the spectral curve of the $A^{(2)}_{2N}$ affine Toda Toda system. Our construction, too, uses fractional powers of the superpotential $W(x)$ that characterizes the curve. We also consider the $u$-plane integral of topologically twisted theories on four-dimensional manifolds $X$ with $b_2^{+}(X) = 1$ in the language of these explicitly constructed Whitham deformations and an integrable hierarchy of the KdV type hidden behind.

Monodromy Transform Approach to Solution of Some Field Equations in General Relativity and String Theory

A monodromy transform approach, presented in this communication, provides a general base for solution of space-time symmetry reductions of Einstein equations in all known integrable cases, which include vacuum, electrovacuum, massless Weyl spinor field and stiff matter fluid, as well as some string theory induced gravity models. It was found a special finite set of functional parameters, defined as the monodromy data for the fundamental solution of associated spectral problem. Similarly to the scattering data in the inverse scattering transform, these monodromy data can be used for characterization of any local solution of the field equations. A "direct" and "inverse" problems of such monodromy transform admit unambiguous solutions. For the linear singular integral equation with a scalar (i.e. non-matrix) kernel, which solves the inverse problem of this monodromy transform, an equivalent regularization -- a Fredholm linear integral equation of the second kind is constrcuted in several convenient forms. For arbitrary choice of the monodromy data a simple iterative method leads to an effective construction of the solution in terms of homogeneously convergent functiona

Backlund Transformations in 10D susy Yang-Mills Theories

This is a continuation of hep-th/9811108, hep-th/9903218, hep-th/9910235, on exact integration technics for modified dynamical equations in ten dimensional supersymmetric gauge theory. A Bäcklund transformation is derived for the Yang type (super) equations previously derived (hep-th/9811108) by M. Saveliev and the author, from the ten dimensional super Yang-Mills field equations in an on-shell light cone gauge. It is shown to be based upon a particular gauge transformation satisfying nonlinear conditions which ensure that the particular form of the equations is retained. These Yang type field equations are shown to be precisely such that they automatically provide a solution of these conditions. This Bäcklund transformation is similar to the one proposed by A. Lesnov for self-dual Yang-Mills in four dimensions. In the introduction a personal recollection on the birth of supersymmetry is given.

$A_n^{(1)}$ Toda Solitons: a Relation between Dressing transformations and Vertex Operators

Affine Toda equations based on simple Lie algebras arise by imposing zero curvature condition on a Lax connection which belongs to the corresponding loop Lie algebra in the principal gradation. In the particular case of $A_n^{(1)}$ Toda models, we exploit the symmetry of the underlying linear problem to calculate the dressing group element which generates arbitrary $N$-soliton solution from the vacuum. Starting from this result we recover the vertex operator representation of the soliton tau functions.

Shock waves in the dissipative Toda lattice

We consider the propagation of a shock wave (SW) in the damped Toda lattice. The SW is a moving boundary between two semi-infinite lattice domains with different densities. A steadily moving SW may exist if the damping in the lattice is represented by an ``inner'' friction, which is a discrete analog of the second viscosity in hydrodynamics. The problem can be considered analytically in the continuum approximation, and the analysis produces an explicit relation between the SW's velocity and the densities of the two phases. Numerical simulations of the lattice equations of motion demonstrate that a stable SW establishes if the initial velocity is directed towards the less dense phase; in the opposite case, the wave gradually spreads out. The numerically found equilibrium velocity of the SW turns out to be in a very good agreement with the analytical formula even in a strongly discrete case. If the initial velocity is essentially different from the one determined by the densities (but has the correct sign), the velocity does not significantly alter, but instead the SW adjusts itself to the given velocity by sending another SW in the opposite direction.

Quantum Dynamical R-matrices and Quantum Frobenius Group

We propose an algebraic scheme for quantizing the rational Ruijsenaars-Schneider model in the R-matrix formalism. We introduce a special parameterization of the cotangent bundle over GL(N,C). In new variables the standard symplectic structure is described by a classical (Frobenius) r-matrix and by a new dynamical $\bar{r}$-matrix. Quantizing both of them we find the quantum L-operator algebra and construct its particular representation corresponding to the rational Ruijsenaars-Schneider system. Using the dual parameterization of the cotangent bundle we also derive the algebra for the L-operator of the trigonometric Calogero-Moser system.

Toda lattices with indefinite metric II: Topology of the iso-spectral manifolds

We consider the iso-spectral real manifolds of tridiagonal Hessenberg matrices with real eigenvalues. The manifolds are described by the iso-spectral flows of indefinite Toda lattice equations introduced by the authors [Physica, 91D (1996), 321-339]. These Toda lattices consist of $2^{N-1}$ different systems with hamiltonians $H = (1/2) \sum_{k=1}^{N} y_k^2 + \sum_{k=1}^{N-1} s_ks_{k+1} \exp(x_k-x_{k+1})$, where $s_i=\pm 1$. We compactify the manifolds by adding infinities according to the Toda flows which blow up in finite time except the case with all $s_is_{i+1}=1$. The resulting manifolds are shown to be nonorientable for $N>2$, and the symmetric group is the semi-direct product of $(\ZZ_2)^{N-1}$ and the permutation group $S_N$. These properties identify themselves with ``small covers'' introduced by Davis and Januszkiewicz [Duke Mathematical Journal, 62 (1991), 417-451]. As a corollary of our construction, we give a formula on the total numbers of zeroes for a system of exponential polynomials generated as Hankel determinant.

Yang-Baxter Algebra for the n-Harmonic Oscillator Realisation of sp(2n,R)

Using a rational R-matrix associated with the 4 x 4 defining matrix representation of c_2=sp(4), the Lie algebra of Sp(4), a one-site operator solution of the associated Yang-Baxter algebra acting in the Fock space of two harmonic oscillators is derived. This is used to define N-site integrable systems, which are soluble by a version of the algebraic Bethe ansatz method without nesting. All essential aspects of the work generalise directly from c_2 to c_n.

Symmetries of a class of Nonlinear Third Order Partial Differential Equations

In this paper we study symmetry reductions of a class of nonlinear third order partial differential equations $u_t -εu_{xxt} +2κu_x= u u_{xxx} +αu u_x +βu_x u_{xx}$ where $ε$, $κ$, $α$ and $β$ are arbitrary constants. Three special cases of equation (1) have appeared in the literature, up to some rescalings. In each case the equation has admitted unusual travelling wave solutions: the Fornberg-Whitham equation, for the parameters $ε=1$, $α=-1$, $β=3$ and $κ=\tfr12$, admits a wave of greatest height, as a peaked limiting form of the travelling wave solution; the Rosenau-Hyman equation, for the parameters $ε=0$, $α=1$, $β=3$ and $κ=0$, admits a ``compacton'' solitary wave solution; and the Fuchssteiner-Fokas-Camassa-Holm equation, for the parameters $ε=1$, $α=-3$ and $β=2$, has a ``peakon'' solitary wave solution. A catalogue of symmetry reductions for equation (1) is obtained using the classical Lie method and the nonclassical method due to Bluman and Cole.

Properties of equations of the continuous Toda type

We study a modified version of an equation of the continuous Toda type in 1+1 dimensions. This equation contains a friction-like term which can be switched off by annihilating a free parameter $\ep$. We apply the prolongation method, the symmetry and the approximate symmetry approach. This strategy allows us to get insight into both the equations for $\ep =0$ and $\ep \ne 0$, whose properties arising in the above frameworks are mutually compared. For $\ep =0$, the related prolongation equations are solved by means of certain series expansions which lead to an infinite- dimensional Lie algebra. Furthermore, using a realization of the Lie algebra of the Euclidean group $E_{2}$, a connection is shown between the continuous Toda equation and a linear wave equation which resembles a special case of a three-dimensional wave equation that occurs in a generalized Gibbons-Hawking ansatz \cite{lebrun}. Nontrivial solutions to the wave equation expressed in terms of Bessel functions are determined. For $\ep\,\ne\,0,$ we obtain a finite-dimensional Lie algebra with four elements. A matrix representation of this algebra yields solutions of the modified continuous Toda equation associated with a

On an integrable discretization of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation

We find time discretizations for the two ''second flows'' of the Ablowitz-Ladik hierachy. These discretizations are described by local equations of motion, as opposed to the previously known ones, due to Taha and Ablowitz. Certain superpositions of our maps allow a one-field reduction and serve therefore as valid space-time discretizations of the modified Korteweg-de Vries equation. We expect the performance of these discretizations to be much better then that of the Taha-Ablowitz scheme. The way of finding interpolating Hamiltonians for our maps is also indicated, as well as the solution of an initial value problem in terms of matrix factorizations.

Factorization and the Dressing Method for the Gel'fand-Dikii Hierarch

The isospectral flows of an $n^{th}$ order linear scalar differential operator $L$ under the hypothesis that it possess a Baker-Akhiezer function were originally investigated by Segal and Wilson from the point of view of infinite dimensional Grassmanians, and the reduction of the KP hierarchy to the Gel'fand-Dikii hierarchy. The associated first order systems and their formal asymptotic solutions have a rich Lie algebraic structure which was investigated by Drinfeld and Sokolov. We investigate the matrix Riemann-Hilbert factorizations for these systems, and show that different factorizations lead respectively to the potential, modified, and ordinary Gel'fand-Dikii flows. Lie algebra decompositions (the Adler-Kostant-Symes method) are obtained for the modified and potential flows. For $n>3$ the appropriate factorization for the Gel'fand-Dikii flows is not a group factorization, as would be expected; yet a modification of the dressing method still works. A direct proof, based on a Fredholm determinant associated with the factorization problem, is given that the potentials are meromorphic in $x$ and in the time variables. Potentials with Baker-Akhiezer functions include th

Generalized Hirota bilinear identity and integrable q-difference and lattice hierarchies.

Hirota bilinear identity for Cauchy-Baker-Akhieser (CBA) kernel is introduced as a basic tool to construct integrable hierarchies containing lattice and q-difference times. Determinant formula for the action of meromorphic function on CBA kernel is derived. This formula gives opportunity to construct generic solutions for integrable lattice equations.

Explicit Integration of the Full Symmetric Toda Hierarchy and the Sorting Property

We give an explicit formula for the solution to the initial value problem of the full symmetric Toda hierarchy. The formula is obtained by the orthogonalization procedure of Szegö, and is also interpreted as a consequence of the QR factorization method of Symes \cite{symes}. The sorting property of the dynamics is also proved for the case of a generic symmetric matrix in the sense described in the text, and generalizations of tridiagonal formulae are given for the case of matrices with $2M+1$ nonzero diagonals.

Separation of Variables. New Trends.

The review is based on the author's papers since 1985 in which a new approach to the separation of variables (\SoV) has being developed. It is argued that \SoV, understood generally enough, could be the most universal tool to solve integrable models of the classical and quantum mechanics. It is shown that the standard construction of the action-angle variables from the poles of the Baker-Akhiezer function can be interpreted as a variant of \SoV, and moreover, for many particular models it has a direct quantum counterpart. The list of the models discussed includes XXX and XYZ magnets, Gaudin model, Nonlinear Schrödinger equation, $SL(3)$-invariant magnetic chain. New results for the 3-particle quantum Calogero-Moser system are reported.

Approximate Lie Group Analysis of a Model Advection Equation on an Unstructured Grid

A technique of ``approximate group analysis'' recently developed by Baikov, Gazizov and Ibragimov is applied to a differential approximation (otherwise referred to as an equivalent differential equation) corresponding to the finite difference approximation of a nonlinear advection equation on unstructured grid. We determine which groups from the infinite variety of groups admitted by a nonlinear advection equation ``survive'' the discretization. The situations arising for different choices of an arbitrary function (local speed of propagation) are also studied.

Equations with an infinite number of explicit Conservation Laws

A large class of first order partial nonlinear differential equations in two independent variables which possess an infinite set of polynomial conservation laws derived from an explicit generating function is constructed. The conserved charge densities are all homogeneous polynomials in the unknown functions which satisfy the differential equations in question. The simplest member of the class of equations is related to the Born-Infeld equation in two dimensions. It is observed that some members of this class possess identical charge densities. This enables the construction of a set of multivariable equations with an infinite number of conservation laws.
