Data assimilation and parameter identification for water waves using the nonlinear Schrödinger equation and physics-informed neural networks

The measurement of deep water gravity wave elevations using in-situ devices, such as wave gauges, typically yields spatially sparse data. This sparsity arises from the deployment of a limited number of gauges due to their installation effort and high operational costs. The reconstruction of the spatio-temporal extent of surface elevation poses an ill-posed data assimilation problem, challenging to solve with conventional numerical techniques. To address this issue, we propose the application of a physics-informed neural network (PINN), aiming to reconstruct physically consistent wave fields between two designated measurement locations several meters apart. Our method ensures this physical consistency by integrating residuals of the hydrodynamic nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE) into the PINN's loss function. Using synthetic wave elevation time series from distinct locations within a wave tank, we initially achieve successful reconstruction quality by employing constant, predetermined NLSE coefficients. However, the reconstruction quality is further improved by introducing NLSE coefficients as additional identifiable variables during PINN training. The results not only showcase a technically relevant application of the PINN method but also represent a pioneering step towards improving the initialization of deterministic wave prediction methods.

Extreme wave excitation from localized phase-shift perturbations

The modulation instability is a focusing mechanism responsible for the formation of strong wave localizations not only on the water surface, but also in a variety of nonlinear dispersive media. Such dynamics is initiated from the injection of side-bands, which translate into an amplitude modulation of the wave field. The nonlinear stage of unstable wave evolution can be described by exact solutions of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE). In that case, the amplitude modulation of such coherent extreme wave structures is connected to a particular phase-shift seed in the carrier wave. In this letter, we show that phase-shifts localization applied to the background, excluding any amplitude modulation excitation, can indeed trigger extreme events. Such rogue waves can be for instance generated by considering the parametrization of fundamental breathers and thus, by seeding only the local phase-shift information to the regular carrier wave. Our wave tank experiments show an excellent agreement with the expected NLSE hydrodynamics and confirm that even though delayed in their evolution, breather-type extreme waves can be generated from a purely regular wave train. Such novel focusing mechanism awaits experimental confirmation in other nonlinear media, such optics, plasma, and Bose-Einstein condensates.

Galilean-transformed solitons and supercontinuum generation in dispersive media

The Galilean transformation is a universal operation connecting the coordinates of a dynamical system, which move relative to each other with a constant speed. In the context of exact solutions of the universal nonlinear Schrödinger equation (NLSE), inducing a Galilean velocity (GV) to the pulse involves a frequency shift to satisfy the symmetry of the wave equation. As such, the Galilean transformation has been deemed to be not applicable to wave groups in nonlinear dispersive media. In this paper, we demonstrate that in a wave tank generated Galilean transformed envelope and Peregrine solitons show clear variations from their respective pure dynamics on the water surface. The type of deviations depends on the sign of the GV and can be captured by the modified NLSE or the Euler equations. Moreover, we show that positive Galilean-translated envelope soliton pulses exhibit self-modulation. While designated GS and wave steepness values expedite multi-soliton dynamics, the strong focusing of such higher-order coherent waves inevitably lead to the generation of supercontinua as a result of soliton fission. We anticipate that kindred experimental and numerical studies might be implemented in other dispersive wave guides governed by nonlinearity.

Degeneration of torsors over families of del Pezzo surfaces

Let S be a split family of del Pezzo surfaces over a discrete valuation ring such that the general fiber is smooth and the special fiber has ADE-singularities. Let G be the reductive group given by the root system of these singularities. We construct a G-torsor over S whose restriction to the generic fiber is the extension of structure group of the universal torsor. This extends a construction of Friedman and Morgan for individual singular del Pezzo surfaces. In case of very good residue characteristic, this torsor is unique and infinitesimally rigid.

Nonlinear vibration localisation in a symmetric system of two coupled beams

We report nonlinear vibration localisation in a system of two symmetric weakly coupled nonlinear oscillators. A two degree-of-freedom model with piecewise linear stiffness shows bifurcations to localised solutions. An experimental investigation employing two weakly coupled beams touching against stoppers for large vibration amplitudes confirms the nonlinear localisation.

On the rationality problem for forms of moduli spaces of stable marked curves of positive genus

Let $M_{g, n}$ (respectively, $\overline{M_{g, n}}$) be the moduli space of smooth (respectively stable) curves of genus $g$ with $n$ marked points. Over the field of complex numbers, it is a classical problem in algebraic geometry to determine whether or not $M_{g, n}$ (or equivalently, $\overline{M_{g, n}}$) is a rational variety. Theorems of J. Harris, D. Mumford, D. Eisenbud and G. Farkas assert that $M_{g, n}$ is not unirational for any $n \geqslant 0$ if $g \geqslant 22$. Moreover, P. Belorousski and A. Logan showed that $M_{g, n}$ is unirational for only finitely many pairs $(g, n)$ with $g \geqslant 1$. Finding the precise range of pairs $(g, n)$, where $M_{g, n}$ is rational, stably rational or unirational, is a problem of ongoing interest. In this paper we address the rationality problem for twisted forms of $\overline{M_{g, n}}$ defined over an arbitrary field $F$ of characteristic $\neq 2$. We show that all $F$-forms of $\overline{M_{g, n}}$ are stably rational for $g = 1$ and $3 \leqslant n \leqslant 4$, $g = 2$ and $2 \leqslant n \leqslant 3$, $g = 3$ and $1 \leqslant n \leqslant 14$, $g = 4$ and $1 \leqslant n \leqslant 9$, $g = 5$ and $1 \leqslant n \leqslant 12$.

On the essential dimension of coherent sheaves

We characterize all fields of definition for a given coherent sheaf over a projective scheme in terms of projective modules over a finite-dimensional endomorphism algebra. This yields general results on the essential dimension of such sheaves. Applying them to vector bundles over a smooth projective curve C, we obtain an upper bound for the essential dimension of their moduli stack. The upper bound is sharp if the conjecture of Colliot-Thélène, Karpenko and Merkurjev holds. We find that the genericity property proved for Deligne-Mumford stacks by Brosnan, Reichstein and Vistoli still holds for this Artin stack, unless the curve C is elliptic.

The Picard group of a coarse moduli space of vector bundles in positive characteristic

Let C be a smooth projective curve over an algebraically closed field of arbitrary characteristic. Let M_{r,L}^{ss} denote the projective coarse moduli scheme of semistable rank r vector bundles over C with fixed determinant L. We prove Pic(M_{r,L}^{ss}) = Z, identify the ample generator, and deduce that M_{r,L}^{ss} is locally factorial. In characteristic zero, this has already been proved by Drézet and Narasimhan. The main point of the present note is to circumvent the usual problems with Geometric Invariant Theory in positive caracteristic.

Independent parameters for special instanton bundles on P^{2n+1}

Motivated by Yang-Mills theory in 4n dimensions, and generalizing the notion due to Atiyah, Drinfeld, Hitchin and Manin for n=1, Okonek, Spindler and Trautmann introduced instanton bundles and special instanton bundles as certain algebraic vector bundles of rank 2n on the complex projective space P^{2n+1}. The moduli space of special instanton bundles is shown to be rational.

New Examples of Stable Bundles on Calabi-Yau Threefolds

In this paper we present a construction of stable bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds using the method of bundle extensions. This construction applies to any given Calabi-Yau threefold with h^{1,1}>1. We give examples of stable bundles of rank 2 and 4 constructed out of pure geometric data of the given Calabi-Yau space. As an application, we find that some of these bundles satisfy the physical constraint imposed by heterotic string anomaly cancellation.

SU(5) Heterotic Standard Model Bundles

We construct a class of stable SU(5) bundles on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold with two sections, a variant of the ordinary Weierstrass fibration, which admits a free involution. The bundles are invariant under the involution, solve the topological constraint imposed by the heterotic anomaly equation and give three generations of Standard Model fermions after symmetry breaking by Wilson lines of the intermediate SU(5) GUT-group to the Standard Model gauge group. Among the solutions we find some which can be perturbed to solutions of the Strominger system. Thus these solutions provide a step toward the construction of phenomenologically realistic heterotic flux compactifications via non-Kahler deformations of Calabi-Yau geometries with bundles. This particular class of solutions involves a rank two hidden sector bundle and does not require background fivebranes for anomaly cancellation.

Poincaré families of G-bundles on a curve

Let G be a reductive group over an algebraically closed field k. Consider the moduli space of stable principal G-bundles on a smooth projective curve C over k. We give necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of Poincaré bundles over open subsets of this moduli space, and compute the orders of the corresponding obstruction classes. This generalizes the previous results of Newstead, Ramanan and Balaji-Biswas-Nagaraj-Newstead to all reductive groups, to all topological types of bundles, and also to all characteristics.

Torelli theorem for the Deligne--Hitchin moduli space

Fix integers $g\geq 3$ and $r\geq 2$, with $r\geq 3$ if $g=3$. Given a compact connected Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g$, let $\MDH(X)$ denote the corresponding $\text{SL}(r, {\mathbb C})$ Deligne--Hitchin moduli space. We prove that the complex analytic space $\MDH(X)$ determines (up to an isomorphism) the unordered pair $\{X, \overline{X}\}$, where $\overline{X}$ is the Riemann surface defined by the opposite almost complex structure on $X$.

Stability of Arakelov bundles and tensor products without global sections

This paper deals with Arakelov vector bundles over an arithmetic curve, i.e. over the set of places of a number field. The main result is that for each semistable bundle E, there is a bundle F such that $E \otimes F$ has at least a certain slope, but no global sections. It is motivated by an analogous theorem of Faltings for vector bundles over algebraic curves and contains the Minkowski-Hlawka theorem on sphere packings as a special case. The proof uses an adelic version of Siegel's mean value formula.
