Solutions of the Strominger System via Stable Bundles on Calabi-Yau Threefolds

We prove that a given Calabi-Yau threefold with a stable holomorphic vector bundle can be perturbed to a solution of the Strominger system provided that the second Chern class of the vector bundle is equal to the second Chern class of the tangent bundle. If the Calabi-Yau threefold has strict SU(3) holonomy then the equations of motion derived from the heterotic string effective action are also satisfied by the solutions we obtain.

New Examples of Stable Bundles on Calabi-Yau Threefolds

In this paper we present a construction of stable bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds using the method of bundle extensions. This construction applies to any given Calabi-Yau threefold with h^{1,1}>1. We give examples of stable bundles of rank 2 and 4 constructed out of pure geometric data of the given Calabi-Yau space. As an application, we find that some of these bundles satisfy the physical constraint imposed by heterotic string anomaly cancellation.

SU(5) Heterotic Standard Model Bundles

We construct a class of stable SU(5) bundles on an elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefold with two sections, a variant of the ordinary Weierstrass fibration, which admits a free involution. The bundles are invariant under the involution, solve the topological constraint imposed by the heterotic anomaly equation and give three generations of Standard Model fermions after symmetry breaking by Wilson lines of the intermediate SU(5) GUT-group to the Standard Model gauge group. Among the solutions we find some which can be perturbed to solutions of the Strominger system. Thus these solutions provide a step toward the construction of phenomenologically realistic heterotic flux compactifications via non-Kahler deformations of Calabi-Yau geometries with bundles. This particular class of solutions involves a rank two hidden sector bundle and does not require background fivebranes for anomaly cancellation.

Heterotic Non-Kahler Geometries via Polystable Bundles on Calabi-Yau Threefolds

In arXiv:1008.1018 it is shown that a given stable vector bundle $V$ on a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ which satisfies $c_2(X)=c_2(V)$ can be deformed to a solution of the Strominger system and the equations of motion of heterotic string theory. In this note we extend this result to the polystable case and construct explicit examples of polystable bundles on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds where it applies. The polystable bundle is given by a spectral cover bundle, for the visible sector, and a suitably chosen bundle, for the hidden sector. This provides a new class of heterotic flux compactifications via non-Kahler deformation of Calabi-Yau geometries with polystable bundles. As an application, we obtain examples of non-Kahler deformations of some three generation GUT models.

On possible Chern Classes of stable Bundles on Calabi-Yau threefolds

Supersymmetric heterotic string models, built from a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ endowed with a stable vector bundle $V$, usually lead to an anomaly mismatch between $c_2(V)$ and $c_2(X)$; this leads to the question whether the difference can be realized by a further bundle in the hidden sector. In math.AG/0604597 a conjecture is stated which gives sufficient conditions on cohomology classes on $X$ to be realized as the Chern classes of a stable reflexive sheaf $V$; a weak version of this conjecture predicts the existence of such a $V$ if $c_2(V)$ is of a certain form. In this note we prove that on elliptically fibered $X$ infinitely many cohomology classes $c\in H^4(X, {\bf Z})$ exist which are of this form and for each of them a stable SU(n) vector bundle with $c=c_2(V)$ exists.

Spectral Bundles and the DRY-Conjecture

Supersymmetric heterotic string models, built from a Calabi-Yau threefold $X$ endowed with a stable vector bundle $V$, usually start from a phenomenologically motivated choice of a bundle $V_v$ in the visible sector, the spectral cover construction on an elliptically fibered $X$ being a prominent example. The ensuing anomaly mismatch between $c_2(V_v)$ and $c_2(X)$, or rather the corresponding differential forms, is often 'solved', on the cohomological level, by including a fivebrane. This leads to the question whether the difference can be alternatively realized by a further stable bundle. The 'DRY'-conjecture of Douglas, Reinbacher and Yau in math.AG/0604597 gives a sufficient condition on cohomology classes on $X$ to be realized as the Chern classes of a stable sheaf. In arXiv:1010.1644 we showed that infinitely many classes on $X$ exist for which the conjecture ist true. In this note we give the sufficient condition for the mentioned fivebrane classes to be realized by a further stable bundle in the hidden sector. Using a result obtained in arXiv:1011.6246 we show that corresponding bundles exist, thereby confirming this version of the DRY-Conjecture.

From Local to Global in F-Theory Model Building

When locally engineering F-theory models some D7-branes for the gauge group factors are specified and matter is localized on the intersection curves of the compact parts of the world-volumes. In this note we discuss to what extent one can draw conclusions about F-theory models by just restricting the attention locally to a particular seven-brane. Globally the possible D7-branes are not independent from each other and the (compact part of the) D7-brane can have unavoidable intrinsic singularities. Many special intersecting loci which were not chosen by hand occur inevitably, notably codimension three loci which are not intersections of matter curves. We describe these complications specifically in a global SU(5) model and also their impact on the tadpole cancellation condition.

Towards the Standard Model spectrum from elliptic Calabi-Yau

We show that it is possible to construct supersymmetric three-generation models of Standard Model gauge group in the framework of non-simply-connected elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau, without section but with a bi-section. The fibrations on a cover Calabi-Yau, where the model has 6 generations of SU(5) and the bundle is given via the spectral cover description, use a different description of the elliptic fibre which leads to more than one global section. We present two examples of a possible cover Calabi-Yau with a free involution: one is a fibre product of rational elliptic surfaces $dP_9$; another example is an elliptic fibration over a Hirzebruch surface. There we give the necessary amount of chiral matter by turning on in the bundles a further parameter, related to singularities of the fibration and the branching of the spectral cover.

U(n) Vector Bundles on Calabi-Yau Threefolds for String Theory Compactifications

An explicit description of the spectral data of stable U(n) vector bundles on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds is given, extending previous work of Friedman, Morgan and Witten. The characteristic classes are computed and it is shown that part of the bundle cohomology vanishes. The stability and the dimension of the moduli space of the U(n) bundles are discussed. As an application, it is shown that the U(n) bundles are capable to solve the basic topological constraints imposed by heterotic string theory. Various explicit solutions of the Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau equation are given. The heterotic anomaly cancellation condition is analyzed; as a result an integral change in the number of fiber wrapping five-branes is found. This gives a definite prediction for the number of three-branes in a dual F-theory model. The net-generation number is evaluated, showing more flexibility compared with the SU(n) case.

Comments on N=1 Heterotic String Vacua

We analyze three aspects of N=1 heterotic string compactifications on elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau threefolds: stability of vector bundles, five-brane instanton transitions and chiral matter. First we show that relative Fourier-Mukai transformation preserves absolute stability. This is relevant for vector bundles whose spectral cover is reducible. Then we derive an explicit formula for the number of moduli which occur in (vertical) five-brane instanton transitions provided a certain vanishing argument applies. Such transitions increase the holonomy of the heterotic vector bundle and cause gauge changing phase transitions. In an M-theory description the transitions are associated with collisions of bulk five-branes with one of the boundary fixed planes. In F-theory they correspond to three-brane instanton transitions. Our derivation relies on an index computation with data localized along the curve which is related to the existence of chiral matter in this class of heterotic vacua. Finally, we show how to compute the number of chiral matter multiplets for this class of vacua allowing to discuss the associated Yukawa couplings.

N=1 Heterotic/F-Theory Duality

We review aspects of N=1 duality between the heterotic string and F-theory. After a description of string duality intended for the non-specialist the framework and the constraints for heterotic/F-theory compactifications are presented. The computations of the necessary Calabi-Yau manifold and vector bundle data, involving characteristic classes and bundle moduli, are given in detail. The matching of the spectrum of chiral multiplets and of the number of heterotic five-branes respectively F-theory three-branes, needed for anomaly cancellation in four-dimensional vacua, is pointed out. Several examples of four-dimensional dual pairs are constructed where on both sides the geometry of the involved manifolds relies on del Pezzo surfaces.
