Parabolic vector bundles and Lie algebroid connections

Given a holomorphic Lie algebroid on an m-pointed Riemann surface, we define parabolic Lie algebroid connections on any parabolic vector bundle equipped with parabolic structure over the marked points. An analogue of the Atiyah exact sequence for parabolic Lie algebroids is constructed. For any Lie algebroid whose underlying holomorphic vector bundle is stable, we give a complete characterization of all the parabolic vector bundles that admit a parabolic Lie algebroid connection.

Ramified covering maps of singular curves and stability of pulled back bundles

Let $f : X \rightarrow Y$ be a generically smooth nonconstant morphism between irreducible projective curves, defined over an algebraically closed field, which is étale on an open subset of $Y$ that contains both the singular locus of $Y$ and the image, in $Y$, of the singular locus of $X$. We prove that the following statements are equivalent: \begin{enumerate} \item The homomorphism of étale fundamental groups $$f_* : π_1^{\rm et}(X) \rightarrowπ_1^{\rm et}(Y)$$ induced by $f$ is surjective. \item There is no nontrivial étale covering $ϕ: Y' \rightarrow Y$ admitting a morphism $q: X \rightarrow Y'$ such that $ϕ\circ q = f$. \item The fiber product $X\times_Y X$ is connected. \item $\dim H^0(X, f^*f_* {\mathcal O}_X)= 1$. \item ${\mathcal O}_Y \subset f_*{\mathcal O}_X$ is the maximal semistable subsheaf. \item The pullback $f^*E$ of every stable sheaf $E$ on $Y$ is also stable. \end{enumerate}

Connections and genuinely ramified maps of curves

Given a singular connection $D$ on a vector bundle $E$ over an irreducible smooth projective curve $X$, defined over an algebraically closed field, we show that there is a unique maximal subsheaf of $E$ on which $D$ induces a nonsingular connection. Given a generically smooth map $ϕ: Y \rightarrow\ X$ between irreducible smooth projective curves, and a singular connection $(V, D)$ on $Y$, the direct image $ϕ_*V$ has a singular connection. Let $\textbf{R}(ϕ_*{\mathcal O}_Y)$ be the unique maximal subsheaf on which the singular connection on $ϕ_*{\mathcal O}_Y$ -- corresponding to the trivial connection on ${\mathcal O}_Y$ -- induces a nonsingular connection. We prove that the homomorphism of étale fundamental groups $ϕ_*: π_1^{\rm et}(Y, y_0) \rightarrow π_1^{\rm et}(X, ϕ(y_0))$ induced by $ϕ$ is surjective if and only if ${\mathcal O}_X \subset \textbf{R}(ϕ_*{\mathcal O}_Y)$ is the unique maximal semistable subsheaf. When the characteristic of the base field is zero, this homomorphism $ϕ_*$ is surjective if and only if ${\mathcal O}_X = \textbf{R}(ϕ_*{\mathcal O}_Y)$. For any nonsingular connection $D$ on a vector bundle $V$ over $X$, there is a natural map $V\hookrightarrow {\bf R}(ϕ_*ϕ^*V)$. When the characteristic of the base field is zero, we prove that the map $ϕ$ is genuinely ramified if and only if $V ={\bf R}(ϕ_*ϕ^*V)$.

Degenerations of Bundle Moduli

Over a family $\mathbb X$ of genus $g$ complete curves, which gives the degeneration of a smooth curve into one with nodal singularities, we build a moduli space which is the moduli space of ${\rm SL}(n, \mathbb C)$ bundles over the generic smooth curve $X_t$ in the family, and is a moduli space of bundles equipped with extra structure at the nodes for the nodal curves in the family. This moduli space is a quotient by $(\mathbb C^*)^s$ of a moduli space on the desingularisation. Taking a "maximal" degeneration of the curve into a nodal curve built from the glueing of three-pointed spheres, we obtain a degeneration of the moduli space of bundles into a $(\mathbb C^*)^{(3g-3)(n-1)}$-quotient of a $(2g-2)$-th power of a space associated to the three-pointed sphere. Via the Narasimhan-Seshadri theorem, the moduli of bundles on the smooth curve is a space of representations of the fundamental group into ${\rm SU}(n)$ (the "symplectic picture"). We obtain the degenerations also in this symplectic context, in a way that is compatible with the holomorphic degeneration, so that our limit space is also a $(S^1)^{(3g-3)(n-1)}$ symplectic quotient of a $(2g-2)$-th power of a space associated to the three-pointed sphere.

Branched SL(r,C)-opers

We define the branched analog of SL(r,C)-opers and investigate their properties. For the usual SL(r,C)-opers, the underlying holomorphic vector bundle is independent of the opers. For the branched SL(r,C)-opers, the underlying holomorphic vector bundle depends on the oper. Given a branched SL(r,C)-oper, we associate to it another holomorphic vector bundle equipped with a logarithmic connection. This holomorphic vector bundle does not depend on the branched oper. We characterize the branched SL(r,C)-opers in terms of the logarithmic connections on this fixed holomorphic vector bundle.

Deformation Theory of Holomorphic Cartan Geometries, II

In this continuation of \cite{BDS}, we investigate the deformations of holomorphic Cartan geometries where the underlying complex manifold is allowed to move. The space of infinitesimal deformations of a flat holomorphic Cartan geometry is computed. We show that the natural forgetful map, from the infinitesimal deformations of a flat holomorphic Cartan geometry to the infinitesimal deformations of the underlying flat principal bundle on the topological manifold, is an isomorphism.

Genuinely ramified maps and stability of pulled-back parabolic bundles

Let $f : X \rightarrow Y$ be a genuinely ramified map between irreducible smooth projective curves defined over an algebraically closed field. Let $P$ be a branch data on $Y$ such that $P(y)$ and $B_f(y)$ where $B_f$ is branch data for $f$ are linearly disjoint for every $y \in, Y$. Further assume that either $P$ is tame or $f$ is Galois. Then the pullback, by $f$, of any stable parabolic bundle on $Y$ with respect to $P$ is actually a stable parabolic bundle on $X$ with respect to $f^*P$.

Genuinely ramified maps and stable vector bundles

Let $f : X \rightarrow Y$ be a separable finite surjective map between irreducible normal projective varieties defined over an algebraically closed field, such that the corresponding homomorphism between étale fundamental groups $f_* : π_1^{\rm et}(X)\rightarrowπ_1^{\rm et}(Y)$ is surjective. Fix a polarization on $Y$ and equip $X$ with the pullback, by $f$, of this polarization on $Y$. Given a stable vector bundle $E$ on $X$, we prove that there is a vector bundle $W$ on $Y$ with $f^*W$ isomorphic to $E$ if and only if the direct image $f_*E$ contains a stable vector bundle $F$ such that $$ \frac{{\rm degree}(F)}{{\rm rank}(F)}= \frac{1}{{\rm degree}(f)}\cdot \frac{{\rm degree}(E)}{{\rm rank}(E)} $$ We also prove that $f^*V$ is stable for every stable vector bundle $V$ on $Y$.

Homotopy type of the nilpotent orbits in classical Lie algebras

In the paper "The Second cohomology of nilpotent orbits in classical Lie algebras, Kyoto J. Math. 60 (2020), no. 2, 717-799" by I. Biswas, P. Chatterjee and C. Maity homotopy types of nilpotent orbits are explicitly described in the case of real simple classical Lie algebras for which any maximal compact subgroup in the associated adjoint group is not semisimple. In this paper we extend the above description of homotopy type of nilpotent orbits to the remaining cases of real simple classical Lie algebras for which any maximal compact subgroup in the associated adjoint group is semisimple.

Infinitesimal deformations of parabolic connections and parabolic opers

We compute the infinitesimal deformations of quadruples of the form $$(X, S, E_*, D),$$ where $(X, S)$ is a compact Riemann surface with $n$ marked points, $E_*$ is a parabolic vector bundle on $X$ with parabolic structure over $S$, and $D$ is a parabolic connection on $E_*$. Using it we compute the infinitesimal deformations of $(X, S, D)$, where $D$ is a parabolic SL(r, C)-oper on $(X, S)$. It is shown that the monodromy map, from the moduli space of triples $(X, S, D)$, where $D$ is a parabolic SL(r, C)-oper on $(X, S)$, to the SL(r, C)-character variety of X - S, is an immersion.

The monodromy map from differential systems to character variety is generically immersive

Let $G$ be a connected reductive affine algebraic group defined over $\mathbb C$ and $\mathfrak g$ its Lie algebra. We study the monodromy map from the space of $\mathfrak g$-differential systems on a compact connected Riemann surface $Σ$ of genus $g \,\geq\, 2$ to the character variety of $G$-representations of the fundamental group of $Σ$. If the complex dimension of $G$ is at least three, we show that the monodromy map is an immersion at the generic point.

The second cohomology groups of nilpotent orbits in classical Lie algebras

The second de Rham cohomology groups of nilpotent orbits in non-compact real forms of classical complex simple Lie algebras are explicitly computed. Furthermore, the first de Rham cohomology groups of nilpotent orbits in non-compact classical simple Lie algebras are computed; they are proven to be zero for nilpotent orbits in all the complex simple Lie algebras. A key component in these computations is a description of the second and first cohomology groups of homogeneous spaces of general connected Lie groups which is obtained here. This description, which generalizes a previous theorem of the first two authors, may be of independent interest.

Branes and moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on smooth projective varieties

Given a smooth complex projective variety $M$ and a smooth closed curve $X \subset M$ such that the homomorphism of fundamental groups $π_1(X) \rightarrow π_1(M)$ is surjective, we study the restriction map of Higgs bundles, namely from Higgs bundles on $M$ to those on $X$. In particular, we investigate the interplay between this restriction map and various types of branes contained in the moduli spaces of Higgs bundles on $M$ and $X$. We also consider the set-up where a finite group is acting on $M$ via holomorphic automorphisms or anti-holomorphic involutions, and the curve $X$ is preserved by the action. Branes are studied in this context.

Higgs bundles and flat connections over compact Sasakian manifolds

Given a compact Kähler manifold $X$, there is an equivalence of categories between the completely reducible flat vector bundles on $X$ and the polystable Higgs bundles $(E,\, θ)$ on $X$ with $c_1(E)= 0= c_2(E)$ \cite{SimC}, \cite{Cor}, \cite{UY}, \cite{DonI}. We extend this equivalence of categories to the context of compact Sasakian manifolds. We prove that on a compact Sasakian manifold, there is an equivalence between the category of semi-simple flat bundles on it and the category of polystable basic Higgs bundles on it with trivial first and second basic Chern classes. We also prove that any stable basic Higgs bundle over a compact Sasakian manifold admits a basic Hermitian metric that satisfies the Yang--Mills--Higgs equation.

Ramified covering maps and stability of pulled back bundles

Let $f:C\rightarrow D$ be a nonconstant separable morphism between irreducible smooth projective curves defined over an algebraically closed field. We say that $f$ is genuinely ramified if ${\mathcal O}_D$ is the maximal semistable subbundle of $f_*{\mathcal O}_C$ (equivalently, the homomorphism of etale fundamental groups is surjective). We prove that the pullback $f^*E\rightarrow C$ is stable for every stable vector bundle $E$ on $D$ if and only if $f$ is genuinely ramified.

Surface group representations in ${\rm SL}_2({\mathbb C})$ with finite mapping class orbits

Given an oriented surface of positive genus with finitely many punctures, we classify the finite orbits of the mapping class group action on the moduli space of semisimple complex special linear two dimensional representations of the fundamental group of the surface. For surfaces of genus at least two, such orbits correspond to homomorphisms with finite image. For genus one, they correspond to the finite or special dihedral representations. We also obtain an analogous result for bounded orbits in the moduli space.

Uniformization of branched surfaces and Higgs bundles

Given a compact Riemann surface $Σ$ of genus $g_Σ\, \geq\, 2$, and an effective divisor $D\, =\, \sum_i n_i x_i$ on $Σ$ with $\text{degree}(D)\, <\, 2(g_Σ-1)$, there is a unique cone metric on $Σ$ of constant negative curvature $-4$ such that the cone angle at each $x_i$ is $2πn_i$ (see McOwen and Troyanov [McO,Tr]). We describe the Higgs bundle corresponding to this uniformization associated to the above conical metric. We also give a family of Higgs bundles on $Σ$ parametrized by a nonempty open subset of $H^0(Σ,\,K_Σ^{\otimes 2}\otimes{\mathcal O}_Σ(-2D))$ that correspond to conical metrics of the above type on moving Riemann surfaces. These are inspired by Hitchin's results in [Hi1], for the case $D\,=\, 0$.

Abel-Jacobi map and curvature of the pulled back metric

Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus at least two. The Abel-Jacobi map $φ: {\rm Sym}^d(X) \rightarrow {\rm Pic}^d(X)$ is an embedding if $d$ is less than the gonality of $X$. We investigate the curvature of the pull-back, by $φ$, of the flat metric on ${\rm Pic}^d(X)$. In particular, we show that when $d=1$, the curvature is strictly negative everywhere if $X$ is not hyperelliptic, and when $X$ is hyperelliptic, the curvature is nonpositive with vanishing exactly on the points of $X$ fixed by the hyperelliptic involution.

Branched projective structures, branched SO(3,C)-opers and logarithmic connections on jet bundle

We study the branched holomorphic projective structures on a compact Riemann surface $X$ with a fixed branching divisor $S\, =\, \sum_{i=1}^d x_i$, where $x_i \,\in\, X$ are distinct points. After defining branched ${\rm SO}(3,{\mathbb C})$--opers, we show that the branched holomorphic projective structures on $X$ are in a natural bijection with the branched ${\rm SO}(3,{\mathbb C})$--opers singular at $S$. It is deduced that the branched holomorphic projective structures on $X$ are also identified with a subset of the space of all logarithmic connections on $J^2((TX)\otimes {\mathcal O}_X(S))$ singular over $S$, satisfying certain natural geometric conditions.

Etale triviality of finite vector bundles over compact complex manifolds

A vector bundle $E$ over a projective variety $M$ is called finite if it satisfies a nontrivial polynomial equation with nonnegative integral coefficients. Introducing finite bundles, Nori proved that $E$ is finite if and only if the pullback of $E$ to some finite étale covering of $M$ is trivializable \cite{No1}. The definition of finite bundles extends naturally to holomorphic vector bundles over compact complex manifolds. We prove that a holomorphic vector bundle over a compact complex manifold $M$ is finite if and only if the pullback of $E$ to some finite étale covering of $M$ is holomorphically trivializable. Therefore, $E$ is finite if and only if it admits a flat holomorphic connection with finite monodromy.

Fourier-Mukai transformation and logarithmic Higgs bundles on punctual Hilbert schemes

Given a vector bundle $E$ on a smooth projective curve or surface $X$ carrying the structure of a $V$-twisted Hitchin pair for some vector bundle $V$, we observe that the associated tautological bundle $E^{[n]}$ on the punctual Hilbert scheme of points $X^{[n]}$ has an induced structure of a $((V^\vee)^{[n]})^\vee$-twisted Hitchin pair, where $(V^\vee)^{[n]}$ is a vector bundle on $X^{[n]}$ constructed using the dual $V^\vee$ of $V$. In particular, a Higgs bundle on $X$ induces a logarithmic Higgs bundle on the Hilbert scheme $X^{[n]}$. We then show that the known results on stability of tautological bundles and reconstruction from tautological bundles generalize to tautological Hitchin pairs.

Fujiki class $\mathcal C$ and holomorphic geometric structures

For compact complex manifolds with vanishing first Chern class that are compact torus principal bundles over Kähler manifolds, we prove that all holomorphic geometric structures on them, of affine type, are locally homogeneous. For a compact simply connected complex manifold in Fujiki class $\mathcal C$, whose dimension is strictly larger than the algebraic dimension, we prove that it does not admit any holomorphic rigid geometric structure, and also it does not admit any holomorphic Cartan geometry of algebraic type. We prove that compact complex simply connected manifolds in Fujiki class $\mathcal {C}$ and with vanishing first Chern class do not admit any holomorphic Cartan geometry of algebraic type.

Generalized B-Opers

Opers were introduced by Beilinson-Drinfeld [arXiv:math.AG/0501398]. In [J. Math. Pures Appl. 82 (2003), 1-42] a higher rank analog was considered, where the successive quotients of the oper filtration are allowed to have higher rank. We dedicate this paper to introducing and studying generalized $B$-opers (where "$B$" stands for "bilinear"), obtained by endowing the underlying vector bundle with a bilinear form which is compatible with both the filtration and the connection. In particular, we study the structure of these $B$-opers, by considering the relationship of these structures with jet bundles and with geometric structures on a Riemann surface.

Holomorphic bundles trivializable by proper surjective holomorphic map

Given a compact complex manifold $M$, we investigate the holomorphic vector bundles $E$ on $M$ such that $φ^* E$ is trivial for some surjective holomorphic map $φ$, to $M$, from some compact complex manifold. We prove that these are exactly those holomorphic vector bundles that admit a flat holomorphic connection with finite monodromy homomorphism. A similar result is proved for holomorphic principal $G$-bundles, where $G$ is a connected reductive complex affine algebraic group.

Holomorphic GL(2)-geometry on compact complex manifolds

We study holomorphic GL(2) and SL(2) geometries on compact complex manifolds. We show that a compact Kähler manifold of complex even dimension higher than two admitting a holomorphic GL(2)-geometry is covered by a compact complex torus. We classify compact Kähler-Einstein manifolds and Fano manifolds bearing holomorphic GL(2)-geometries. Among the compact Kähler-Einstein manifolds we prove that the only examples bearing holomorphic GL(2)-geometry are those covered by compact complex tori, the three dimensional quadric and those covered by the three dimensional Lie ball (the non compact dual of the quadric).

Positivity of vector bundles on homogeneous varieties

We study the following question: Given a vector bundle on a projective variety $X$ such that the restriction of $E$ to every closed curve $C \,\subset\, X$ is ample, under what conditions $E$ is ample? We first consider the case of an abelian variety $X$. If $E$ is a line bundle on $X$, then we answer the question in the affirmative. When $E$ is of higher rank, we show that the answer is affirmative under some conditions on $E$. We then study the case of $X \,=\, G/P$, where $G$ is a reductive complex affine algebraic group, and $P$ is a parabolic subgroup of $G$. In this case, we show that the answer to our question is affirmative if $E$ is $T$--equivariant, where $T\, \subset\, P$ is a fixed maximal torus. Finally, we compute the Seshadri constant for such vector bundles defined on $G/P$.

Projective structures on Riemann surface and natural differential operators

We investigate the holomorphic differential operators on a Riemann surface $M$. This is done by endowing $M$ with a projective structure. Let $\mathcal L$ be a theta characteristic on $M$. We explicitly describe the jet bundle $J^k(E\otimes {\mathcal L}^{\otimes n})$, where $E$ is a holomorphic vector bundle on $M$ equipped with a holomorphic connection, for all $k$ and $n$. This provides a description of holomorphic differential operators from $E\otimes {\mathcal L}^{\otimes n}$ to another holomorphic vector bundle $F$ using the natural isomorphism $\text{Diff}^k(E\otimes {\mathcal L}^{\otimes n}, F)= F\otimes (J^k(E\otimes {\mathcal L}^{\otimes n}))^*$.

Logarithmic Cartan geometry on complex manifolds

We pursue the study of holomorphic Cartan geometry with singularities. We introduce the notion of logarithmic Cartan geometry on a complex manifold, with polar part supported on a normal crossing divisor. In particular, we show that the push-forward of a Cartan geometry constructed using a finite Galois ramified covering is a logarithmic Cartan geometry (the polar part is supported on the ramification locus). We also study the specific case of the logarithmic Cartan geometry with the model being the complex affine space.

Logarithmic connections on principal bundles over a Riemann surface

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a $T$-invariant logarithmic connection on $E_G$ singular over $D$ such that the residue over each $x \in D$ is $w_x$. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a logarithmic connection on $E_G$ singular over $D$ such that the residue over each $x \in D$ is $w_x$, under the assumption that each $w_x$ is $T$-rigid.

A criterion for a degree-one holomorphic map to be a biholomorphism

Let $X$ and $Y$ be compact connected complex manifolds of the same dimension with $b_2(X)= b_2(Y)$. We prove that any surjective holomorphic map of degree one from $X$ to $Y$ is a biholomorphism. A version of this was established by the first two authors, but under an extra assumption that $\dim H^1(X {\mathcal O}_X)\,=\,\dim H^1(Y {\mathcal O}_Y)$. We show that this condition is actually automatically satisfied.

A no-go theorem for nonabelionic statistics in gauged linear sigma-models

Gauged linear sigma-models at critical coupling on Riemann surfaces yield self-dual field theories, their classical vacua being described by the vortex equations. For local models with structure group ${\rm U}(r)$, we give a description of the vortex moduli spaces in terms of a fibration over symmetric products of the base surface $Σ$, which we assume to be compact. Then we show that all these fibrations induce isomorphisms of fundamental groups. A consequence is that all the moduli spaces of multivortices in this class of models have abelian fundamental groups. We give an interpretation of this fact as a no-go theorem for the realization of nonabelions through the ground states of a supersymmetric version (topological via an A-twist) of these gauged sigma-models. This analysis is based on a semi-classical approximation of the QFTs via supersymmetric quantum mechanics on their classical moduli spaces.

Abelianization of the F-divided fundamental group scheme

The Albanese morphism for $(X ,x_0)$ produces a homomorphism from the abelianization of the $F$-divided fundamental group scheme of $X$ to the $F$-divided fundamental group of the Albanese variety of $X$. We prove that this homomorphism is surjective with finite kernel. The kernel is also described.

Automorphisms of the generalized quot schemes

Given a compact connected Riemann surface $X$ of genus $g \geq 2$, and integers $r\geq 2$, $d_p > 0$ and $d_z > 0$, in \cite{BDHW}, a generalized quot scheme ${\mathcal Q}_X(r,d_p,d_z)$ was introduced. Our aim here is to compute the holomorphic automorphism group of ${\mathcal Q}_X(r,d_p,d_z)$. It is shown that the connected component of $\text{Aut}( {\mathcal Q}_X(r,d_p,d_z))$ containing the identity automorphism is $\text{PGL}(r,{\mathbb C})$. As an application of it, we prove that if the generalized quot schemes of two Riemann surfaces are holomorphically isomorphic, then the two Riemann surfaces themselves are isomorphic.

Equality of the algebraic and geometric ranks of Cartan subalgebras and applications to linearization of a system of ordinary differential equations

If $L$ is a semisimple Lie algebra of vector fields on R^N with a split Cartan subalgebra C, then it is proved that the dimension of the generic orbit of C coincides with the dimension of C. As a consequence one obtains a local canonical form of L in terms of exponentials of coordinate functions and vector fields that are independent of these coordinates -- for a suitable choice of coordinates. This result is used to classify semisimple algebras of vector fields on R^3 and to determine all representations of sl(N, R) as vector fields on R^N. These representations are used to find linearizing coordinates for any second order ordinary differential equation that admits sl(3, R) as its symmetry algebra and for a system of two second order ordinary differential equations that admits sl(4, R) as its symmetry algebra.

Holomorphic affine connections on non-Kähler manifolds

Isomonodromic deformations of irregular connections and stability of bundles

Let $G$ be a reductive affine algebraic group defined over $\mathbb C$, and let $\nabla_0$ be a meromorphic $G$-connection on a holomorphic $G$-bundle $E_0$, over a smooth complex curve $X_0$, with polar locus $P_0 \subset X_0$. We assume that $\nabla_0$ is irreducible in the sense that it does not factor through some proper parabolic subgroup of $G$. We consider the universal isomonodromic deformation $(E_t\to X_t, \nabla_t, P_t)_{t\in \mathcal{T}}$ of $(E_0\to X_0, \nabla_0, P_0)$, where $\mathcal{T}$ is a certain quotient of a certain framed Teichmüller space we describe. We show that if the genus $g$ of $X_0$ satisfies $g\geq 2$, then for a general parameter $t\in \mathcal{T}$, the $G$-bundle $E_t\to X_t$ is stable. For $g\geq 1$, we are able to show that for a general parameter $t\in \mathcal{T}$, the $G$-bundle $E_t\to X_t$ is semistable.

On connections on principal bundles

A new construction of a universal connection was given in \cite{BHS}. The main aim here is to explain this construction. A theorem of Atiyah and Weil says that a holomorphic vector bundle $E$ over a compact Riemann surface admits a holomorphic connection if and only if the degree of every direct summand of $E$ is degree. In \cite{AB}, this criterion was generalized to principal bundles on compact Riemann surfaces. This criterion for principal bundles is also explained.

On the Kaehler metrics over ${mathrm{Sym}^{d}(X)$

Let $X$ be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus $g$, with $g \geq 2$. For each $d <η(X)$, where $η(X)$ is the gonality of $X$, the symmetric product $\text{Sym}^d(X)$ embeds into $\text{Pic}^d(X)$ by sending an effective divisor of degree $d$ to the corresponding holomorphic line bundle. Therefore, the restriction of the flat Kähler metric on $\text{Pic}^d(X)$ is a Kähler metric on $\text{Sym}^d(X)$. We investigate this Kähler metric on $\text{Sym}^d(X)$. In particular, we estimate it's Bergman kernel. We also prove that any holomorphic automorphism of $\text{Sym}^d(X)$ is an isometry.

Let S be a compact connected oriented orbifold surface We show that using Bers simultaneous uniformization, the moduli space of projective structure on S can be mapped biholomorphically onto the total space of the holomorphic cotangent bundle of the Teichmüller space for S. The total space of the holomorphic cotangent bundle of the Teichmüller space is equipped with the Liouville symplectic form, and the moduli space of projective structures also has a natural holomorphic symplectic form. The above identification is proved to be compatible with these symplectic structures. Similar results are obtained for biholomorphisms constructed using uniformizations provided by Schottky groups and Earle's version of simultaneous uniformization.

The Weil-Petersson current for moduli of vector bundles and applications to orbifolds

We investigate stable holomorphic vector bundles on a compact complex Kähler manifold and more generally on an orbifold that is equipped with a Kähler structure. We use the existence of Hermite-Einstein connections in this set-up and construct a generalized Weil-Petersson form on the moduli space of stable vector bundles with fixed determinant bundle. We show that the Weil-Petersson form extends as a (semi-)positive closed current for degenerating families that are restrictions of coherent sheaves. Such an extension will be called a Weil-Petersson current. When the orbifold is of Hodge type, there exists a determinant line bundle on the moduli space; this line bundle carries a Quillen metric, whose curvature coincides with the generalized Weil-Petersson form. As an application we show that the determinant line bundle extends to a suitable compactification of the moduli space.

Vector bundles over a real elliptic curve

Given a geometrically irreducible smooth projective curve of genus 1 defined over the field of real numbers, and a pair of integers r and d, we determine the isomorphism class of the moduli space of semi-stable vector bundles of rank r and degree d on the curve. When r and d are coprime, we describe the topology of the real locus and give a modular interpretation of its points. We also study, for arbitrary rank and degree, the moduli space of indecomposable vector bundles of rank r and degree d, and determine its isomorphism class as a real algebraic variety.

A splitting theorem for good complexifications

The purpose of this paper is to produce restrictions on fundamental groups of manifolds admitting good complexifications by proving the following Cheeger-Gromoll type splitting theorem: Any closed manifold $M$ admitting a good complexification has a finite-sheeted regular covering $M_1$ such that $M_1$ admits a fiber bundle structure with base $(S^1)^k$ and fiber $N$ that admits a good complexification and also has zero virtual first Betti number. We give several applications to manifolds of dimension at most 5.

Anti-holomorphic involutions of the moduli spaces of Higgs bundles

These involutions are defined by fixing anti-holomorphic involutions on both $X$ and $G$. We analyze the fixed point locus in the moduli space and their relation with representations of the orbifold fundamental group of $X$ equipped with the anti-holomorphic involution. We also study the relation with branes. This generalizes work by Biswas--Garc\'ıa-Prada--Hurtubise and Baraglia--Schaposnik.

Deligne pairing and Quillen metric

Let $X\rightarrow S$ be a smooth projective surjective morphism of relative dimension $n$, where $X$ and $S$ are integral schemes over $\mathbb C$. Let $L\rightarrow X$ be a relatively very ample line bundle. For every sufficiently large positive integer $m$, there is a canonical isomorphism of the Deligne pairing $\langle L ,\cdots , L\rangle\rightarrow S$ with the determinant line bundle ${\rm Det}((L- {\mathcal O}_{X})^{\otimes (n+1)}\otimes L^{\otimes m})$ \cite{PRS}. If we fix a hermitian structure on $L$ and a relative Kähler form on $X$, then each of the line bundles ${\rm Det}((L- {\mathcal O}_{X})^{\otimes (n+1)}\otimes L^{\otimes m})$ and $\langle L\, ,\cdots\, ,L\rangle$ carries a distinguished hermitian structure. We prove that the above mentioned isomorphism between $\langle L\, ,\cdots\, ,L\rangle\longrightarrow S$ and ${\rm Det}((L- {\mathcal O}_{X})^{\otimes (n+1)}\otimes L^{\otimes m})$ is compatible with these hermitian structures. This holds also for the isomorphism in \cite{BSW} between a Deligne paring and a certain determinant line bundle.

Kähler structure on Hurwitz spaces

The classical Hurwitz spaces, that parameterize compact Riemann surfaces equipped with covering maps to ${\mathbb P}_1$ of fixed numerical type with simple branch points, are extensively studied in the literature. We apply deformation theory, and present a study of the Kähler structure of the Hurwitz spaces, which reflects the variation of the complex structure of the Riemann surface as well as the variation of the meromorphic map. We introduce a generalized Weil-Petersson Kähler form on the Hurwitz space. This form turns out to be the curvature of a Quillen metric on a determinant line bundle. Alternatively, the generalized Weil-Petersson Kähler form can be characterized as the curvature form of the hermitian metric on the Deligne pairing of the relative canonical line bundle and the pull back of the anti-canonical line bundle on ${\mathbb P}_1$. Replacing the projective line by an arbitrary but fixed curve $Y$, we arrive at a generalized Hurwitz space with similar properties. The determinant line bundle extends to a compactification of the (generalized) Hurwitz space as a line bundle, and the Quillen metric yields a singular hermitian metric on the compactification so that a power of the determinant line bundle provides an embedding of the Hurwitz space in a projective space.

Homotopical Height

Given a group $G$ and a class of manifolds $\CC$ (e.g. symplectic, contact, Kähler etc), it is an old problem to find a manifold $M_G \in \CC$ whose fundamental group is $G$. This article refines it: for a group $G$ and a positive integer $r$ find $M_G \in \CC$ such that $π_1(M_G)=G$ and $π_i(M_G)=0$ for $1<i<r$. We thus provide a unified point of view systematizing known and new results in this direction for various different classes of manifolds. The largest $r$ for which such an $M_G \in \CC$ can be found is called the homotopical height $ht_\CC(G)$. Homotopical height provides a dimensional obstruction to finding a $K(G,1)$ space within the given class $\CC$, leading to a hierarchy of these classes in terms of "softness" or "hardness" à la Gromov. We show that the classes of closed contact, CR, and almost complex manifolds as well as the class of (open) Stein manifolds are soft. The classes $\SP$ and $\CA$ of closed symplectic and complex manifolds exhibit intermediate "softness" in the sense that every finitely presented group $G$ can be realized as the fundamental group of a manifold in $\SP$ and a manifold in $\CA$. For these classes, $ht_\CC(G)$ provides a numerical invariant for finitely presented groups. We give explicit computations of these invariants for some standard finitely presented groups. We use the notion of homotopical height within the "hard" category of Kähler groups to obtain partial answers to questions of Toledo regarding second cohomology and second group cohomology of Kähler groups. We also modify and generalize a construction due to Dimca, Papadima and Suciu to give a potentially large class of projective groups violating property FP.

Rigidity of holomorphic maps between fiber spaces

In the study of holomorphic maps, the term "rigidity" refers to certain types of results that give us very specific information about a general class of holomorphic maps owing to the geometry of their domains or target spaces. Under this theme, we begin by studying when, given two compact connected complex manifolds $X$ and $Y$, a degree-one holomorphic map $f: Y\to X$ is a biholomorphism. Given that the real manifolds underlying $X$ and $Y$ are diffeomorphic, we provide a condition under which $f$ is a biholomorphism. Using this result, we deduce a rigidity result for holomorphic self-maps of the total space of a holomorphic fiber space. Lastly, we consider products $X=X_1\times X_2$ and $Y=Y_1\times Y_2$ of compact connected complex manifolds. When $X_1$ is a Riemann surface of genus $\geq 2$, we show that any non-constant holomorphic map $F:Y\to X$ is of a special form.

The vortex equation on affine manifolds

Let M be a compact connected special affine manifold equipped with an affine Gauduchon metric. We show that a pair (E, ϕ), consisting of a flat vector bundle E over M and a flat nonzero section ϕ of E, admits a solution to the vortex equation if and only if it is polystable. To prove this, we adapt the dimensional reduction techniques for holomorphic pairs on Kähler manifolds to the situation of flat pairs on affine manifolds.

Automorphisms of the Quot schemes associated to compact Riemann surfaces

Let X be a compact connected Riemann surface of genus at least two. Fix positive integers r and d. Let Q denote the Quot scheme that parametrizes the torsion quotients of {\mathcal O}^{\oplus r}_X of degree d. This Q is also the moduli space of vortices for the standard action of U(r) on {\mathbb C}^r. The group \text{PGL}(r, {\mathbb C}) acts on Q via the action of $\text{GL}(r, {\mathbb C})$ on ${\mathcal O}^{\oplus r}_X$. We prove that this subgroup $\text{PGL}(r, {\mathbb C})$ is the connected component, containing the identity element, of the holomorphic automorphism group Aut(\mathcal Q). As an application of it, we prove that the isomorphism class of the complex manifold Q uniquely determines the isomorphism class of the Riemann surface X.

Moduli of vortices and Grassmann manifolds

We use the framework of Quot schemes to give a novel description of the moduli spaces of stable n-pairs, also interpreted as gauged vortices on a closed Riemann surface with target Mat(r x n, C), where n >= r. We then show that these moduli spaces embed canonically into certain Grassmann manifolds, and thus obtain natural Kaehler metrics of Fubini-Study type; these spaces are smooth at least in the local case r=n. For abelian local vortices we prove that, if a certain "quantization" condition is satisfied, the embedding can be chosen in such a way that the induced Fubini-Study structure realizes the Kaehler class of the usual L^2 metric of gauged vortices.

On the logarithmic connections over curves

We study two different actions on the moduli spaces of logarithmic connections over smooth complex projective curves. Firstly, we establish a dictionary between logarithmic orbifold connections and parabolic logarithmic connections over the quotient curve. Secondly, we prove that fixed points on the moduli space of connections under the action of finite order line bundles are exactly the push-forward of logarithmic connections on a certain unramified Galois cover of the base curve. In the coprime case, this action of finite order line bundles on the moduli space is cohomologically trivial.

Principal bundles over a real algebraic curve

Let X be a compact connected Riemann surface equipped with an anti-holomorphic involution σ. Let G be a connected complex reductive affine algebraic group, and let σ_G be a real form of G. We consider holomorphic principal G-bundles on X satisfying compatibility conditions with respect to σand σ_G. We prove that the points defined over $\mathbb R$ of the smooth locus of a moduli space of principal G-bundles on X are precisely these objects, under the assumption that {\rm genus}(X) > 2. Stable, semistable and polystable bundles are defined in this context. Relationship between any of these properties and the corresponding property of the underlying holomorphic principal G-bundle is explored. A bijective correspondence between unitary representations and polystable objects is established.

Pseudo-real principal Higgs bundles on compact Kaehler manifolds

Let $X$ be a compact connected Kähler manifold equipped with an anti-holomorphic involution which is compatible with the Kähler structure. Let $G$ be a connected complex reductive affine algebraic group equipped with a real form $σ_G$. We define pseudo-real principal $G$--bundles on $X$; these are generalizations of real algebraic principal $G$--bundles over a real algebraic variety. Next we define stable, semistable and polystable pseudo-real principal $G$--bundles. Their relationships with the usual stable, semistable and polystable principal $G$--bundles are investigated. We then prove that the following Donaldson--Uhlenbeck--Yau type correspondence holds: a pseudo-real principal $G$--bundle admits a compatible Einstein-Hermitian connection if and only if it is polystable. A bijection between the following two sets is established: 1) The isomorphism classes of polystable pseudo-real principal $G$--bundles such that all the rational characteristic classes of the underlying topological principal $G$--bundle vanish. 2) The equivalence classes of twisted representations of the extended fundamental group of $X$ in a $σ_G$--invariant maximal compact subgroup of $G$. (The twisted representations are defined using the central element in the definition of a pseudo-real principal $G$--bundle.) All these results are also generalized to the pseudo-real Higgs $G$--bundle.

Given a holomorphic line bundle $L$ on a compact complex torus $A$, there are two naturally associated holomorphic $Ω_A$--torsors over $A$: one is constructed from the Atiyah exact sequence for $L$, and the other is constructed using the line bundle $(p^*_1 L^*)\otimes (α^*L)$, where $α$ is the addition map on $A\times A$, and $p_1$ is the projection of $A\times A$ to the first factor. In \cite{BHR}, it was shown that these two torsors are isomorphic. The aim here is to produce a canonical isomorphism between them through an explicit construction.

Real projective structures on a real curve

Given a compact connected Riemann surface $X$ equipped with an antiholomorphic involution $τ$, we consider the projective structures on $X$ satisfying a compatibility condition with respect to $τ$. For a projective structure $P$ on $X$, there are holomorphic connections and holomorphic differential operators on $X$ that are constructed using $P$. When the projective structure $P$ is compatible with $τ$, the relationships between $τ$ and the holomorphic connections, or the differential operators, associated to $P$ are investigated. The moduli space of projective structures on a compact oriented $C^\infty$ surface of genus $g\, \geq\, 2$ has a natural holomorphic symplectic structure. It is known that this holomorphic symplectic manifold is isomorphic to the holomorphic symplectic manifold defined by the total space of the holomorphic cotangent bundle of the Teichmüller space ${\mathcal T}_g$ equipped with the Liouville symplectic form. We show that there is an isomorphism between these two holomorphic symplectic manifolds that is compatible with $τ$.

Three manifold groups, Kaehler groups and complex surfaces

Let $ 1 \rightarrow N \rightarrow G \rightarrow Q \rightarrow 1$ be an exact sequence of finitely presented groups where Q is infinite and not virtually cyclic, and is the fundamental group of some closed 3-manifold. If G is Kaehler, we show that Q is either the 3-dimensional Heisenberg group or the fundamental group of the Cartesian product of a closed oriented surface of positive genus and the circle. As a corollary, we obtain a new proof of a theorem of Dimca and Suciu by taking N to be the trivial group, If G is the fundamental group of a compact complex surface, we show that Q must be the fundamental group of a Seifert-fibered space and G the fundamental group of an elliptic fibration. We also give an example showing that the relation of quasi-isometry does not preserve Kaehler groups. This gives a negative answer to a question of Gromov which asks whether Kaehler groups can be characterized by their asymptotic geometry.

Determinant line bundle on moduli space of parabolic bundles

In \cite{BR1}, \cite{BR2}, a parabolic determinant line bundle on a moduli space of stable parabolic bundles was constructed, along with a Hermitian structure on it. The construction of the Hermitian structure was indirect: The parabolic determinant line bundle was identified with the pullback of the determinant line bundle on a moduli space of usual vector bundles over a covering curve. The Hermitian structure on the parabolic determinant bundle was taken to be the pullback of the Quillen metric on the determinant line bundle on the moduli space of usual vector bundles. Here a direct construction of the Hermitian structure is given. Thurston boundary of Teichmüller spaces and the commensurability modular group

If $p : Y \to X$ is an unramified covering map between two compact oriented surfaces of genus at least two, then it is proved that the embedding map, corresponding to $p$, from the Teichmüller space ${\cal T}(X)$, for $X$, to ${\cal T}(Y)$ actually extends to an embedding between the Thurston compactification of the two Teichmüller spaces. Using this result, an inductive limit of Thurston compactified Teichmüller spaces has been constructed, where the index for the inductive limit runs over all possible finite unramified coverings of a fixed compact oriented surface of genus at least two. This inductive limit contains the inductive limit of Teichmüller spaces, constructed in \cite{BNS}, as a subset. The universal commensurability modular group, which was constructed in \cite{BNS}, has a natural action on the inductive limit of Teichmüller spaces. It is proved here that this action of the universal commensurability modular group extends continuously to the inductive limit of Thurston compactified Teichmüller spaces.

Weil-Petersson geometry and determinant bundles on inductive limits of moduli spaces

In an earlier paper [Acta Mathematica, v. 176, 1996, 145-169, alg-geom/9505024 ] the present authors and Dennis Sullivan constructed the universal direct system of the classical Teichmüller spaces of Riemann surfaces of varying genus. The direct limit, which we called the universal commensurability Teichmüller space, $T_{infty}$, was shown to carry on it a natural action of the universal commensurability mapping class group, $MC_{\infty}$. In this paper we identify an interesting cofinal sub-system corresponding to the tower of finite-sheeted characteristic coverings over any fixed base surface. Utilizing a certain subgroup inside $MC_{\infty}$, (associated intimately to the inverse system of characteristic coverings), we can now descend to an inductive system of moduli spaces, and construct the direct limit ind-variety $M_{\infty}$. Invoking curvature properties of Quillen metrics on determinant bundles, and naturality under finite coverings of Weil-Petersson forms, we are able to construct on $M_{\infty}$ the natural sequence of determinant of cohomology line bundles, as well as the Mumford isomorphisms connecting these.
