Correlative mapping of local hysteresis properties in VO$_2$

We have developed a new optical microscopy technique able to track micron-sized surface clusters as temperature is varied. Potential candidates for study include phase separated metal-insulator materials, ferroelectrics, and porous structures. Several key techniques (including autofocus, step motor/cross correlation alignments, single-pixel thresholding, pair connectivity correlation length and image convolution) were implemented in order to obtain a time series of thresholded images. Here, we apply this new method to probe the archetypal phase separated insulator-metal transition in VO$_2$. A precise time and temperature series of the insulator-metal transition was achieved, allowing us to construct for the first time in this material spatial maps of the transition temperature T$_c$. These maps reveal multiple interesting features such as fractal electronic patterns on micron scales, regions of the sample with an extremely large or nearly absent local hysteresis, a positive correlation between the T$_c$ value and the hysteresis width $Δ$T$_c$, and high cycle-to-cycle reproducibility of the transition. These maps also allow for the identification of individual pixels with unique transition characteristics. This unprecedented knowledge of the local properties of each spot along with the behavior of the entire network paves the way to novel electronics applications enabled by, {\em e.g.}, addressing specific regions with desired memory and/or switching characteristics, as well as detailed explorations of open questions in the theory of hysteresis.

Effective operators on an attractive magnetic edge

The semiclassical Laplacian with discontinuous magnetic field is considered in two dimensions. The magnetic field is sign changing with exactly two distinct values and is discontinuous along a smooth closed curve, thereby producing an attractive magnetic edge. Various accurate spectral asymptotics are established by means of a dimensional reduction involving a microlocal phase space localization allowing to deal with the discontinuity of the field.

Eigenvalue asymptotics for confining magnetic Schrödinger operators with complex potentials

This article is devoted to the spectral analysis of the electro-magnetic Schrödinger operator on the Euclidean plane. In the semiclassical limit, we derive a pseudo-differential effective operator that allows us to describe the spectrum in various situations and appropriate regions of the complex plane. Not only results of the selfadjoint case are proved (or recovered) in the proposed unifying framework, but new results are established when the electric potential is complex-valued. In such situations, when the non-selfadjointness comes with its specific issues (lack of a "spectral theorem", resolvent estimates), the analogue of the "low-lying eigenvalues" of the selfadjoint case are still accurately described and the spectral gaps estimated.

Semiclassical spectral gaps of the 3D Neumann Laplacian with constant magnetic field

This article deals with the spectral analysis of the semiclassical Neumann magnetic Laplacian on a smooth bounded domain in dimension three. When the magnetic field is constant and in the semiclassical limit, we establish a four-term asymptotic expansion of the low-lying eigenvalues, involving a geometric quantity along the apparent contour of the domain in the direction of the field. In particular, we prove that they are simple.

Purely magnetic tunneling effect in two dimensions

The semiclassical magnetic Neumann Schrödinger operator on a smooth, bounded, and simply connected domain $Ω$ of the Euclidean plane is considered. When $Ω$ has a symmetry axis, the semiclassical splitting of the first two eigenvalues is analyzed. The first explicit tunneling formula in a pure magnetic field is established. The analysis is based on a pseudo-differential reduction to the boundary and the proof of the first known optimal purely magnetic Agmon estimates.

Magnetic confinement for the 3D Robin Laplacian

We determine accurate asymptotics of the lowest eigenvalue for the Laplace operator with a smooth magnetic field and Robin boundary conditions in a smooth 3D domain, when the Robin parameter tends to $+\infty$. Our results identify a critical regime where the contribution of the magnetic field and the Robin condition are of the same order. In this critical regime, we derive an effective operator defined on the boundary of the domain.

On the semiclassical spectrum of the Dirichlet-Pauli operator

This paper is devoted to semiclassical estimates of the eigenvalues of the Pauli operator on a bounded open set whose boundary carries Dirichlet conditions. Assuming that the magnetic field is positive and a few generic conditions, we establish the simplicity of the eigenvalues and provide accurate asymptotic estimates involving Segal-Bargmann and Hardy spaces associated with the magnetic field.

On the two-dimensional quantum confined Stark effect in strong electric fields

We consider a Stark Hamiltonian on a two-dimensional bounded domain with Dirichlet boundary conditions. In the strong electric field limit we derive, under certain local convexity conditions, a three-term asymptotic expansion of the low-lying eigenvalues. This shows that the excitation frequencies are proportional to the square root of the boundary curvature at a certain point determined by the direction of the electric field.

On the semiclassical Laplacian with magnetic field having self-intersecting zero set

This paper is devoted to the spectral analysis of the Neumann realization of the 2D magnetic Laplacian with semiclassical parameter h > 0 in the case when the magnetic field vanishes along a smooth curve which crosses itself inside a bounded domain. We investigate the behavior of its eigenpairs in the limit h $\rightarrow$ 0. We show that each crossing point acts as a potential well, generating a new decay scale of h 3/2 for the lowest eigenvalues, as well as exponential concentration for eigenvectors around the set of crossing points. These properties are consequences of the nature of associated model problems in R 2 for which the zero set of the magnetic field is the union of two straight lines. In this paper we also analyze the spectrum of model problems when the angle between the two straight lines tends to 0.

A general multiblock method for structured variable selection

Regularised canonical correlation analysis was recently extended to more than two sets of variables by the multiblock method Regularised generalised canonical correlation analysis (RGCCA). Further, Sparse GCCA (SGCCA) was proposed to address the issue of variable selection. However, for technical reasons, the variable selection offered by SGCCA was restricted to a covariance link between the blocks (i.e., with $τ=1$). One of the main contributions of this paper is to go beyond the covariance link and to propose an extension of SGCCA for the full RGCCA model (i.e., with $τ\in[0, 1]$). In addition, we propose an extension of SGCCA that exploits structural relationships between variables within blocks. Specifically, we propose an algorithm that allows structured and sparsity-inducing penalties to be included in the RGCCA optimisation problem. The proposed multiblock method is illustrated on a real three-block high-grade glioma data set, where the aim is to predict the location of the brain tumours, and on a simulated data set, where the aim is to illustrate the method's ability to reconstruct the true underlying weight vectors.

Magnetic WKB Constructions

This paper is devoted to the semiclassical magnetic Laplacian. Until now WKB expansions for the eigenfunctions were only established in presence of a non-zero electric potential. Here we tackle the pure magnetic case. Thanks to Feynman-Hellmann type formulas and coherent states decomposition, we develop here a magnetic Born-Oppenheimer theory. Exploiting the multiple scales of the problem, we are led to solve an effective eikonal equation in pure magnetic cases and to obtain WKB expansions. We also investigate explicit examples for which we can improve our general theorem: global WKB expansions, quasi-optimal estimates of Agmon and upper bound of the tunelling effect (in symmetric cases). We also apply our strategy to get more accurate descriptions of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions in a wide range of situations analyzed in the last two decades.

Tunneling for the Robin Laplacian in smooth planar domains

We study the low-lying eigenvalues of the semiclassical Robin Laplacian in a smooth planar domain symmetric with respect to an axis. In the case when the curvature of the boundary of the domain attains its maximum at exactly two points away from the axis of symmetry, we establish an explicit asymptotic formula for the splitting of the first two eigenvalues. This is a rigorous derivation of the semiclassical tunneling effect induced by the domain's geometry. Our approach is close to the Born-Oppenheimer one and yields, as a byproduct, a Weyl formula of independent interest.

Band functions in the presence of magnetic steps

We complete the analysis of the band functions for two-dimensional magnetic Schrödinger operators with piecewise constant magnetic fields. The discontinuity of the magnetic field can create edge currents that ow along the discontinuity that have been described by physicists. Properties of these edge currents are directly related to the behavior of the band functions. The effective potential of the fiber operator is an asymmetric double well (eventually degenerated) and the analysis of the splitting of the bands incorporates the asymmetry. If the magnetic field vanishes, the reduced operator has essential spectrum and we provide an explicit description of the band functions located below the essential spectrum. For non degenerate magnetic steps, we provide an asymptotic expansion of the band functions at infinity. We prove that when the ratio of the two magnetic fields is rational, a splitting of the band functions occurs and has a natural order, predicted by numerical computations.

Magnetic Wells in Dimension Three

This paper deals with semiclassical asymptotics of the three-dimensional magnetic Laplacian in presence of magnetic confinement. Using generic assumptions on the geometry of the confinement, we exhibit three semiclassical scales and their corresponding effective quantum Hamiltonians, by means of three microlocal normal forms à la Birkhoff. As a consequence, when the magnetic field admits a unique and non degenerate minimum, we are able to reduce the spectral analysis of the low-lying eigenvalues to a one-dimensional $\hbar$-pseudo-differential operator whose Weyl's symbol admits an asymptotic expansion in powers of $\hbar^{\frac1 2}$.

Semiclassical tunneling and magnetic flux effects on the circle

This paper is devoted to semiclassical tunneling estimates induced on the circle by a double well electric potential in the case when a magnetic field is added. When the two electric wells are connected by two geodesics for the Agmon distance, we highlight an oscillating factor (related to the circulation of the magnetic field) in the splitting estimate of the first two eigenvalues.

Optimal magnetic Sobolev constants in the semiclassical limit

This paper is devoted to the semiclassical analysis of the best constants in the magnetic Sobolev embeddings in the case of a bounded domain of the plane carrying Dirichlet conditions. We provide quantitative estimates of these constants (with an explicit dependence on the semiclassical parameter) and analyze the exponential localization in $L^\infty$-norm of the corresponding minimizers near the magnetic wells.

preprint2014arXiv

Strong confinement limit for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation constrained on a curve

This paper is devoted to the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation in a two dimensional waveguide with shrinking cross section of order $ε$. For a Cauchy data living essentially on the first mode of the transverse Laplacian, we provide a tensorial approximation of the solution $ψ^ε$ in the limit $ε\to 0$, with an estimate of the approximation error, and derive a limiting nonlinear Schrödinger equation in dimension one. If the Cauchy data $ψ^ε_0$ has a uniformly bounded energy, then it is a bounded sequence in $H^1$ and we show that the approximation is of order $\mathcal O(\sqrtε)$. If we assume that $ψ^ε_0$ is bounded in the graph norm of the Hamiltonian, then it is a bounded sequence in $H^2$ and we show that the approximation error is of order $\mathcal O(ε)$.

Magnetic effects in curved quantum waveguides

The interplay among the spectrum, geometry and magnetic field in tubular neighbourhoods of curves in Euclidean spaces is investigated in the limit when the cross section shrinks to a point. Proving a norm resolvent convergence, we derive effective, lower-dimensional models which depend on the intensity of the magnetic field and curvatures. The results are used to establish complete asymptotic expansions for eigenvalues. Spectral stability properties based on Hardy-type inequalities induced by magnetic fields are also analysed.

Magnetic Neumann Laplacian on a sharp cone

This paper is devoted to the spectral analysis of the Laplacian with constant magnetic field on a cone of aperture $α$ and Neumann boundary condition. We analyze the influence of the orientation of the magnetic field. In particular, for any orientation of the magnetic field, we prove the existence of discrete spectrum below the essential spectrum in the limit $α\to 0$ and establish a full asymptotic expansion for the $n$-th eigenvalue and the $n$-th eigenfunction.

The magnetic Laplacian in shrinking tubular neighbourhoods of hypersurfaces

The Dirichlet Laplacian between two parallel hypersurfaces in Euclidean spaces of any dimension in the presence of a magnetic field is considered in the limit when the distance between the hypersurfaces tends to zero. We show that the Laplacian converges in a norm-resolvent sense to a Schroedinger operator on the limiting hypersurface whose electromagnetic potential is expressed in terms of principal curvatures and the projection of the ambient vector potential to the hypersurface. As an application, we obtain an effective approximation of bound-state energies and eigenfunctions in thin quantum layers.

Sharp asymptotics for the Neumann Laplacian with variable magnetic field : case of dimension 2

The aim of this paper is to establish estimates of the lowest eigenvalue of the Neumann realization of $(i\nabla+B\textbf{A})^2$ on an open bounded subset of $\mathbb{R}^2$ $Ω$ with smooth boundary as $B$ tends to infinity. We introduce a "magnetic" curvature mixing the curvature of $\partialΩ$ and the normal derivative of the magnetic field and obtain an estimate analogous with the one of constant case. Actually, we give a precise estimate of the lowest eigenvalue in the case where the restriction of magnetic field to the boundary admits a unique minimum which is non degenerate. We also give an estimate of the third critical field in Ginzburg-Landau theory in the variable magnetic field case.
