Effective operators on an attractive magnetic edge

The semiclassical Laplacian with discontinuous magnetic field is considered in two dimensions. The magnetic field is sign changing with exactly two distinct values and is discontinuous along a smooth closed curve, thereby producing an attractive magnetic edge. Various accurate spectral asymptotics are established by means of a dimensional reduction involving a microlocal phase space localization allowing to deal with the discontinuity of the field.

Helical magnetic fields and semi-classical asymptotics of the lowest eigenvalue

We study the 3D Neuman magnetic Laplacian in the presence of a semi-classical parameter and a non-uniform magnetic field with constant intensity. We determine a sharp two term asymptotics for the lowest eigenvalue, where the second term involves a quantity related to the magnetic field and the geometry of the domain. In the special case of the unit ball and a helical magnetic field, the concentration takes place on two symmetric points of the unit sphere.

Tunneling effect induced by a curved magnetic edge

Experimentally observed magnetic fields with nanoscale variations are theoretically modeled by a piece-wise constant function with jump discontinuity along a smooth curve, the magnetic edge. Assuming the edge is a closed curve with an axis of symmetry and the field is sign changing and with exactly two distinct values, we prove that semi-classical tunneling occurs and calculate the magnitude of this tunneling effect.

Courant-sharp eigenvalues of compact flat surfaces: Klein bottles and cylinders

The question of determining for which eigenvalues there exists an eigenfunction which has the same number of nodal domains as the label of the associated eigenvalue (Courant-sharp property) was motivated by the analysis of minimal spectral partitions. In previous works, many examples have been analyzed corresponding to squares, rectangles, disks, triangles, tori, Möbius strips,\ldots . A natural toy model for further investigations is the flat Klein bottle, a non-orientable surface with Euler characteristic $0$, and particularly the Klein bottle associated with the square torus, whose eigenvalues have higher multiplicities. In this note, we prove that the only Courant-sharp eigenvalues of the flat Klein bottle associated with the square torus (resp. with square fundamental domain) are the first and second eigenvalues. We also consider the flat cylinders $(0,π) \times \mathbb{S}^1_r$ where $r \in \{0.5,1\}$ is the radius of the circle $\mathbb{S}^1_r$, and we show that the only Courant-sharp Dirichlet eigenvalues of these cylinders are the first and second eigenvalues.

Courant-sharp property for Dirichlet eigenfunctions on the Möbius strip

The question of determining for which eigenvalues there exists an eigenfunction which has the same number of nodal domains as the label of the associated eigenvalue (Courant-sharp property) was motivated by the analysis of minimal spectral partitions. In previous works, many examples have been analyzed corresponding to squares, rectangles, disks, triangles, tori, \ldots . A natural toy model for further investigations is the Möbius strip, a non-orientable surface with Euler characteristic $0$, and particularly the "square" Möbius strip whose eigenvalues have higher multiplicities. In this case, we prove that the only Courant-sharp Dirichlet eigenvalues are the first and the second, and we exhibit peculiar nodal patterns.

Magnetic confinement for the 3D Robin Laplacian

We determine accurate asymptotics of the lowest eigenvalue for the Laplace operator with a smooth magnetic field and Robin boundary conditions in a smooth 3D domain, when the Robin parameter tends to $+\infty$. Our results identify a critical regime where the contribution of the magnetic field and the Robin condition are of the same order. In this critical regime, we derive an effective operator defined on the boundary of the domain.

Non-boundedness of the number of super level domains of eigenfunctions

Generalizing Courant's nodal domain theorem, the "Extended Courant property" is the statement that a linear combination of the first $n$ eigenfunctions has at most $n$ nodal domains. A related question is to estimate the number of connected components of the (super) level sets of a Neumann eigenfunction $u$. Indeed, in this case, the first eigenfunction is constant, and looking at the level sets of $u$ amounts to looking at the nodal sets $\{u-a=0\}$, where $a$ is a real constant. In the first part of the paper, we prove that the Extended Courant property is false for the subequilateral triangle and for regular $N$-gons ($N$ large), with the Neumann boundary condition. More precisely, we prove that there exists a Neumann eigenfunction $u_k$ of the $N$-gon, with labelling $k$, $4 \le k \le 6$, such that the set $\{u_k \not = 1\}$ has $(N+1)$ connected components. In the second part, we prove that there exists a metric $g$ on $\mathbb{T}^2$ (resp. on $\mathbb{S}^2$), which can be chosen arbitrarily close to the flat metric (resp. round metric), and an eigenfunction $u$ of the associated Laplace-Beltrami operator, such that the set $\{u \not = 1\}$ has infinitely many connected components. In particular the Extended Courant property is false for these closed surfaces. These results are strongly motivated by a recent paper by Buhovsky, Logunov and Sodin. As for the positive direction, in Appendix~B, we prove that the Extended Courant property is true for the isotropic quantum harmonic oscillator in $\mathbb{R}^2$.

On the spectrum of some Bloch-Torrey vector operators

We consider the Bloch-Torrey operator in $L^2(I,{\mathbb R}^3)$ where $I\subseteq{\mathbb R}$. In contrast with the $L^2(I,{\mathbb R}^2)$ (as well as the $L^2({\mathbb R}^k,{\mathbb R}^2)$) case considered in previous works. We obtain that ${\mathbb R}_+$ is in the continuous spectrum for $I={\mathbb R}$ as well as discrete spectrum outside the real line. For a finite interval we find the left margin of the spectrum. In addition, we prove that the Bloch-Torrey operator must have an essential spectrum for a rather general setup in ${\mathbb R}^k$, and find an effective description for its domain.

On the stability of laminar flows between plates

Consider a two-dimensional laminar flow between two plates, so that $(x_1,x_2)\in {\mathbb R} \times[-1,1]$, given by ${\mathbf v}(x_1,x_2)=(U(x_2),0)$, where $U\in C^4([-1,1])$ satisfies $U^\prime\neq0$ in $[-1,1]$. We prove that the flow is linearly stable in the large Reynolds number limit, in two different cases: $\bullet$ $\sup_{x\in[-1,1]} |U"(x)| + \sup_{x\in[-1,1]} |U"(x)| \ll \min_{x\in[-1,1]}|U^\prime(x)|$ (nearly Couette flows), $\bullet$ $U^{\prime\prime}\neq0$ in $[-1,1]$. We assume either no-slip or fixed traction force conditions on the plates, and an arbitrary large (but much smaller than the Reynolds number) period in the $x_1$ direction.

Level sets of certain Neumann eigenfunctions under deformation of Lipschitz domains. Application to the Extended Courant Property

In this paper, we prove that the Extended Courant Property fails to be true for certain smooth, strictly convex domains with Neumann boundary condition: there exists a linear combination of a second and a first Neumann eigenfunctions, with three nodal domains. For the proof, we revisit a deformation argument of Jerison and Nadirashvili (J. Amer. Math. Soc. 2000, vol. 13). This argument being interesting in itself, we give full details. In particular, we carefully control the dependence of the constants on the geometry of our Lipschitz domains along the deformations.

On Courant's nodal domain property for linear combinations of eigenfunctions, Part II

Generalizing Courant's nodal domain theorem, the "Extended Courant property" is the statement that a linear combination of the first $n$ eigenfunctions has at most $n$ nodal domains. In a previous paper (Documenta Mathematica, 2018, Vol. 23, pp. 1561--1585), we gave simple counterexamples to this property, including convex domains. In the present paper, using some input from numerical computations, we pursue the investigation of the Extended Courant property with two new examples, the equilateral rhombus and the regular hexagon.

Thin domain limit and counterexamples to strong diamagnetism

We study the magnetic Laplacian and the Ginzburg-Landau functional in a thin planar, smooth, tubular domain and with a uniform applied magnetic field. We provide counterexamples to strong diamagnetism, and as a consequence, we prove that the transition from the superconducting to the normal state is non-monotone. In some non-linear regime, we determine the structure of the order parameter and compute the super-current along the boundary of the sample. Our results are in agreement with what was observed in the Little-Parks experiment, for a thin cylindrical sample.

On Courant's nodal domain property for linear combinations of eigenfunctions, Part I

According to Courant's theorem, an eigenfunction as\-sociated with the $n$-th eigenvalue $λ\_n$ has at most $n$ nodal domains. A footnote in the book of Courant and Hilbert, states that the same assertion is true for any linear combination of eigenfunctions associated with eigenvalues less than or equal to $λ\_n$. We call this assertion the \emph{Extended Courant Property}.\smallskipIn this paper, we propose simple and explicit examples for which the extended Courant property is false: convex domains in $\R^n$ (hypercube and equilateral triangle), domains with cracks in $\mathbb{R}^2$, on the round sphere $\mathbb{S}^2$, and on a flat torus $\mathbb{T}^2$.

Sturm's theorem on the zeros of sums of eigenfunctions: Gelfand's strategy implemented

In the second section "Courant-Gelfand theorem" of his last published paper (Topological properties of eigenoscillations in mathematical physics, Proc. Steklov Institute Math. 273 (2011) 25--34), Arnold recounts Gelfand's strategy to prove that the zeros of any linear combination of the $n$ first eigenfunctions of the Sturm-Liouville problem $$-\, y"(s) + q(x)\, y(x) = λ\, y(x) \mbox{ in } ]0,1[\,, \mbox{ with } y(0)=y(1)=0\,,$$divide the interval into at most $n$ connected components, and concludes that "the lack of a published formal text with a rigorous proof \dots is still distressing." Inspired by Quantum mechanics, Gelfand's strategy consists in replacing the ana\-lysis of linear combinations of the $n$ first eigenfunctions by that of their Slater determinant which is the first eigenfunction of the associated $n$-particle operator acting on Fermions. In the present paper, we implement Gelfand's strategy, and give a complete proof of the above assertion. As a matter of fact, refining Gelfand's strategy, we prove a stronger property taking the multiplicity of zeros into account, a result which actually goes back to Sturm (1836).

Sturm's theorem on zeros of linear combinations of eigenfunctions

Motivated by recent questions about the extension of Courant's nodal domain theorem, we revisit a theorem published by C. Sturm in 1836, which deals with zeros of linear combination of eigenfunctions of Sturm-Liouville problems. Although well known in the nineteenth century, this theorem seems to have been ignored or forgotten by some of the specialists in spectral theory since the second half of the twentieth-century. Although not specialists in History of Sciences, we have tried to put these theorems into the context of nineteenth century mathematics.

Peierls' substitution for low lying spectral energy windows

We consider a $2d$ magnetic Schrödinger operator perturbed by a weak magnetic field which slowly varies around a positive mean. In a previous paper we proved the appearance of a `Landau type' structure of spectral islands at the bottom of the spectrum, under the hypothesis that the lowest Bloch eigenvalue of the unperturbed operator remained simple on the whole Brillouin zone, even though its range may overlap with the range of the second eigenvalue. We also assumed that the first Bloch spectral projection was smooth and had a zero Chern number. In this paper we extend our previous results to the only two remaining possibilities: either the first Bloch eigenvalue remains isolated while its corresponding spectral projection has a non-zero Chern number, or the first two Bloch eigenvalues cross each other.

Some nodal properties of the quantum harmonic oscillator and other Schr{ö}dinger operators in $\mathbb{R}^2$

For the spherical Laplacian on the sphere and for the Dirichlet Laplacian in the square}, Antonie Stern claimed in her PhD thesis (1924) the existence of an infinite sequence of eigenvalues whose corresponding eigenspaces contain an eigenfunction with exactly two nodal domains. These results were given complete proofs respectively by Hans Lewy in 1977, and the authors in 2014 (see also Gauthier-Shalom--Przybytkowski, 2006). In this paper, we obtain similar results for the two dimensional isotropic quantum harmonic oscillator. In the opposite direction, we construct an infinite sequence of regular eigenfunctions with as many nodal domains as allowed by Courant's theorem, up to a factor $\frac{1}{4}$. A classical question for a $2$-dimensional bounded domain is to estimate the length of the nodal set of a Dirichlet eigenfunction in terms of the square root of the energy. In the last section, we consider some Schr{ö}dinger operators $-Δ+ V$ in $\mathbb{R}^2$ and we provide bounds for the length of the nodal set of an eigenfunction with energy $λ$ in the classically permitted region $\{V(x) < λ\}$.

Decay of superconductivity away from the magnetic zero set

We establish exponential bounds on the Ginzburg-Landau order parameter away from the curve where the applied magnetic field vanishes. In the units used in this paper, the estimates are valid when the parameter measuring the strength of the applied magnetic field is comparable with the Ginzburg-Landau parameter. This completes a previous work by the authors analyzing the case when this strength was much higher. Our results display the distribution of surface and bulk superconductivity and are valid under the assumption that the magnetic field is Hölder continuous.

On nodal domains in Euclidean balls

Å. Pleijel (1956) has proved that in the case of the Laplacian with Dirichlet condition, the equality in the Courant nodal theorem (Courant sharp situation) can only be true for a finite number of eigenvalues when the dimension is $\geq 2$. Recently Polterovich extended the result to the Neumann problem in two dimensions in the case when the boundary is piecewise analytic. A question coming from the theory of spectral minimal partitions has motivated the analysis of the cases when one has equality in Courant's theorem. In this note, we identify the Courant sharp eigenvalues for the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians in balls in $\mathbb R^d$, $d\geq 2$. The result for the Dirichlet Laplacian in the disc in $\mathbb R^2$ was obtained by B. Helffer, T. Hoffmann-Ostenhof and S. Terracini.

On the semi-classical analysis of the groundstate energy of the Dirichlet Pauli operator

We discuss the results of a recent paper by Ekholm, Kovařík and Portmann in connection with a question of C. Guillarmou about the semiclassical expansion of the lowest eigenvalue of the Pauli operator with Dirichlet conditions. We exhibit connections with the properties of the torsion function in mechanics, the exit time of a Brownian motion and the analysis of the low eigenvalues of some Witten Laplacian.

Pleijel's theorem for Schrödinger operators with radial potentials

In 1956 $Å$. Pleijel gave his celebrated theorem showing that the inequality in Courant's theorem on the number of nodal domains is strict for large eigenvalues of the Laplacian. This was a consequence of a stronger result giving an asymptotic upper bound for the number of nodal domains of the eigenfunctions as the eigenvalues tend to $+\infty$. A similar question occurs naturally for Schr"\odinger operators. The first significant result has been obtained recently by the first author for the harmonic oscillator. The purpose of this paper is to consider more general potentials which are radial. We will analyze the case when the potential tends to $+\infty$ and the case when the potential is negative and tends to zero, where the considered eigenfucntion are associated to the eigenvalues below the essential spectrum.

The weak Pleijel theorem with geometric control

Let $Ω\subset \mathbb R^d\,, d\geq 2$, be a bounded open set, and denote by $λ\_j(Ω), j\geq 1$, the eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian arranged in nondecreasing order, with multiplicities. The weak form of Pleijel's theorem states that the number of eigenvalues $λ\_j(Ω)$, for which there exists an associated eigenfunction with precisely $j$ nodal domains (Courant-sharp eigenvalues), is finite. The purpose of this note is to determine an upper bound for Courant-sharp eigenvalues, expressed in terms of simple geometric invariants of $Ω$. We will see that this is connected with one of the favorite problems considered by Y. Safarov.

Tunneling for the Robin Laplacian in smooth planar domains

We study the low-lying eigenvalues of the semiclassical Robin Laplacian in a smooth planar domain symmetric with respect to an axis. In the case when the curvature of the boundary of the domain attains its maximum at exactly two points away from the axis of symmetry, we establish an explicit asymptotic formula for the splitting of the first two eigenvalues. This is a rigorous derivation of the semiclassical tunneling effect induced by the domain's geometry. Our approach is close to the Born-Oppenheimer one and yields, as a byproduct, a Weyl formula of independent interest.

A review on large k minimal spectral k-partitions and Pleijel's Theorem

In this survey, we review the properties of minimal spectral $k$-partitions in the two-dimensional case and revisit their connections with Pleijel's Theorem. We focus on the large $k$ problem (and the hexagonal conjecture) in connection with two recent preprints by J. Bourgain and S. Steinerberger on the Pleijel Theorem. This leads us also to discuss some conjecture by I. Polterovich, in relation with square tilings. We also establish a Pleijel Theorem for Aharonov-Bohm Hamiltonians and deduce from it, via the magnetic characterization of the minimal partitions, some lower bound for the number of critical points of a minimal partition.

Courant-sharp eigenvalues for the equilateral torus, and for the equilateral triangle

We address the question of determining the eigenvalues $λ\_n$ (listed in nondecreasing order, with multiplicities) for which Courant's nodal domain theorem is sharp i.e., for which there exists an associated eigenfunction with $n$ nodal domains (Courant-sharp eigenvalues). Following ideas going back to Pleijel (1956), we prove that the only Courant-sharp eigenvalues of the flat equilateral torus are the first and second, and that the only Courant-sharp Dirichlet eigenvalues of the equilateral triangle are the first, second, and fourth eigenvalues. In the last section we sketch similar results for the right-angled isosceles triangle and for the hemiequilateral triangle.

Dirichlet eigenfunctions on the cube, sharpening the Courant nodal inequality

This paper is devoted to the refine analysis of Courant's theorem for the Dirichlet Laplacian. Many papers (and some of them quite recent) have investigated in which cases this inequality in Courant's theorem is an equality: Pleijel, Helffer--Hoffmann-Ostenhof--Terracini, Helffer--Hoffmann-Ostenhof, Bérard-Helffer, Helffer--Persson-Sundqvist, Léna, Leydold. All these results were devoted to $(2D)$-cases in open sets in $\mathbb R^2$ or in surfaces like $\mathbb S^2$ or $\mathbb T^2$. The aim of the current paper is to look for analogous results for domains in $\mathbb{R}^3$ and, as $Å.$Pleijel was suggesting in his 1956 founding paper, for the simplest case of the cube. More precisely, we will prove that the only eigenvalues of the Dirichlet Laplacian which are Courant sharp are the two first eigenvalues.

Eigenvalues for the Robin Laplacian in domains with variable curvature

We determine accurate asymptotics for the low-lying eigenvalues of the Robin Laplacian when the Robin parameter goes to $-\infty$. The two first terms in the expansion have been obtained by K. Pankrashkin in the $2D$-case and by K. Pankrashkin and N. Popoff in higher dimensions. The asymptotics display the influence of the scalar curvature and the splitting between every two consecutive eigenvalues. The analysis is based on the approach developed by Fournais-Helffer for the semi-classical magnetic Laplacian. We also propose a WKB construction as a candidate for the ground state energy.

From constant to non-degenerately vanishing magnetic fields in superconductivity

We explore the relationship between two reference functions arising in the analysis of the Ginzburg-Landau functional. The first function describes the distribution of superconductivity in a type II superconductor subjected to a constant magnetic field. The second function describes the distribution of superconductivity in a type II superconductor submitted to a variable magnetic field that vanishes non-degenerately along a smooth curve.

Lower bound for the number of critical points of minimal spectral k-partitions for k large

In a recent paper with Thomas Hoffmann-Ostenhof, we proved that the number of critical points in the boundary set of a k-minimal partition tends to infinity as k tends to infinity. In this note, we show that this number increases linearly with k as suggested by a hexagonal conjecture about the asymptotic behavior of the energy of these minimal partitions. As the original proof by Pleijel, this involves Faber-Krahn's inequality and Weyl's formula, but this time, due to the magnetic characterization of the minimal partitions, we have to establish a Weyl's formula for Aharonov-Bohm operator controlled with respect to a k-dependent number of poles.

Magnetic Wells in Dimension Three

This paper deals with semiclassical asymptotics of the three-dimensional magnetic Laplacian in presence of magnetic confinement. Using generic assumptions on the geometry of the confinement, we exhibit three semiclassical scales and their corresponding effective quantum Hamiltonians, by means of three microlocal normal forms à la Birkhoff. As a consequence, when the magnetic field admits a unique and non degenerate minimum, we are able to reduce the spectral analysis of the low-lying eigenvalues to a one-dimensional $\hbar$-pseudo-differential operator whose Weyl's symbol admits an asymptotic expansion in powers of $\hbar^{\frac1 2}$.

Mixed normal-superconducting states in the presence of strong electric currents

We study the Ginzburg-Landau equations in the presence of large electric currents, that are smaller than the critical current where the normal state losses its stability. For steady-state solutions in the large $κ$ limit, we prove that the superconductivity order parameter is exponentially small in a significant part of the domain, and small in the rest of it. Similar results are obtained for the time-dependent problem, in continuation of the paper by the two first authors [3]. We conclude by obtaining some weaker results, albeit similar, for steady-state solutions in the large domain limit.

On a magnetic characterization of spectral minimal partitions

Given a bounded open set $Ω$ in $ \mathbb R^n$ (or in a Riemannian manifold) and a partition of $Ω$ by $k$ open sets $D_j$, we consider the quantity $\max_j λ(D_j)$ where $λ(D_j)$ is the ground state energy of the Dirichlet realization of the Laplacian in $D_j$. If we denote by $ \mathfrak L_k(Ω)$ the infimum over all the $k$-partitions of $ \max_j λ(D_j)$, a minimal $k$-partition is then a partition which realizes the infimum. When $k=2$, we find the two nodal domains of a second eigenfunction, but the analysis of higher $k$'s is non trivial and quite interesting. In this paper, we give the proof of one conjecture formulated previously by V. Bonnaillie-Noel and B. Helffer about a magnetic characterization of the minimal partitions when $n=2$.

These two statements were given complete proofs respectively by Hans Lewy in 1977, and the authors in 2014 (see also Gauthier-Shalom--Przybytkowski (2006)). On the spectrum of non-selfadjoint Schrödinger operators with compact resolvent

We determine the Schatten class for the compact resolvent of Dirichlet realizations, in unbounded domains, of a class of non-selfadjoint differential operators. This class consists of operators that can be obtained via analytic dilation from a Schrödinger operator with magnetic field and a complex electric potential. As an application, we prove, in a variety of examples motivated by Physics, that the system of generalized eigenfunctions associated with the operator is complete, or at least the existence of an infinite discrete spectrum.

The Ginzburg-Landau functional with vanishing magnetic field

We study the infimum of the Ginzburg-Landau functional in the case of a vanishing external magnetic field in a two dimensional simply connected domain. We obtain an energy asymptotics which is valid when the Ginzburg-Landau parameter is large and the strength of the external field is comparable with the third critical field. Compared with the known results when the external magnetic field does not vanish, we show in this regime a concentration of the energy near the zero set of the external magnetic field. Our results complete former results obtained by K. Attar and X-B. Pan--K-H.~Kwek.

Accurate semiclassical spectral asymptotics for a two-dimensional magnetic Schrödinger operator

We revisit the problem of semiclassical spectral asymptotics for a pure magnetic Schrödinger operator on a two-dimensional Riemannian manifold. We suppose that the minimal value $b_0$ of the intensity of the magnetic field is strictly positive, and the corresponding minimum is unique and non-degenerate. The purpose is to get the control on the spectrum in an interval $(hb_0, h(b_0 +γ_0)]$ for some $γ_0>0$ independent of the semiclassical parameter $h$. The previous papers by Helffer-Mohamed and by Helffer-Kordyukov were only treating the ground-state energy or a finite (independent of $h$) number of eigenvalues. Note also that N. Raymond and S. Vu Ngoc have recently developed a different approach of the same problem.

Global stability of the normal state of superconductors in the presence of a strong electric current

We consider the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model of superconductivity in the presence of an electric current flowing through a two-dimensional wire. We show that when the current is sufficiently strong the solution converges in the long-time limit to the normal state. We provide two types of upper bounds for the critical current where such global stability is achieved: by using the principal eigenvalue of the magnetic Laplacian associated with the normal magnetic field, and through the norm of the resolvent of the linearized steady-state operator. In the latter case we estimate the resolvent norm in large domains by the norms of approximate operators defined on the plane and the half-plane. We also obtain a lower bound, in large domains, for the above critical current by obtaining the current for which the normal state looses its local stability.

Semiclassical spectral asymptotics for a magnetic Schrödinger operator with non-vanishing magnetic field

We suppose that the minimal value $b_0$ of the module $|\vec{B}|$ of the vector magnetic field $\vec{B}$ is strictly positive, and there exists a unique minimum point of $|\vec{B}|$, which is non-degenerate. The main result of the paper is upper estimates for the low-lying eigenvalues of the operator $H^h$ in the semiclassical limit. Semiclassical spectral asymptotics for a two-dimensional magnetic Schrödinger operator II: The case of degenerate wells

We continue our study of a magnetic Schrödinger operator on a two-dimensional compact Riemannian manifold in the case when the minimal value of the module of the magnetic field is strictly positive. We analyze the case when the magnetic field has degenerate magnetic wells. The main result of the paper is an asymptotics of the groundstate energy of the operator in the semiclassical limit. The upper bounds are improved in the case when we have a localization by a miniwell effect of lowest order. These results are applied to prove the existence of an arbitrary large number of spectral gaps in the semiclassical limit in the corresponding periodic setting.

Sharp trace asymptotics for a class of 2D-magnetic operators

In this paper we prove a two-term asymptotic formula for for the spectral counting function for a 2D magnetic Schrödinger operator on a domain (with Dirichlet boundary conditions) in a semiclassical limit and with strong magnetic field. By scaling, this is equivalent to a thermodynamic limit of a 2D Fermi gas submitted to a constant external magnetic field. The original motivation comes from a paper by H. Kunz in which he studied, among other things, the boundary correction for the grand-canonical pressure and density of such a Fermi gas. Our main theorem yields a rigorous proof of the formulas announced by Kunz. Moreover, the same theorem provides several other results on the integrated density of states for operators of the type $(-ih\nabla- μ{\bf A})^2$ in $L^2(Ω)$ with Dirichlet boundary conditions.

On semi-Classical Questions Related to Signal Analysis

This study explores the reconstruction of a signal using spectral quantities associated with some self-adjoint realization of an h-dependent Schrödinger operator when the parameter h tends to 0. Theoretical results in semi-classical analysis are proved. Some numerical results are also presented. We first consider as a toy model the sech^2 function. Then we study a real signal given by arterial blood pressure measurements. This approach seems to be very promising in signal analysis. Indeed it provides new spectral quantities that can give relevant information on some signals as it is the case for arterial blood pressure signal.

We suppose that the minimal value $b_0$ of the magnetic field $b$ is strictly positive, and there exists a unique minimum point of $b$, which is non-degenerate. The main result of the paper is a complete asymptotic expansion for the low-lying eigenvalues of the operator $H^h$ in the semiclassical limit. We also apply these results to prove the existence of an arbitrary large number of spectral gaps in the semiclassical limit in the corresponding periodic setting.

Superconductivity between HC2 and HC3

Superconductivity for Type II superconductors in external magnetic fields of magnitude between the second and third critical fields is known to be restricted to a narrow boundary region. The profile of the superconducting order parameter in the Ginzburg-Landau model is expected to be governed by an effective one-dimensional model. This is known to be the case for external magnetic fields sufficiently close to the third critical field. In this text we prove such a result on a larger interval of validity.
