A categorical perspective on extended metric-topological spaces

Motivated by the analysis and geometry of metric-measure structures in infinite dimensions, we study the category of extended metric-topological spaces, along with many of its distinguished subcategories (such as the one of compact spaces). One of the main achievements is the proof of the bicompleteness (i.e. of the existence of all small limits and colimits) of the aforementioned categories.

Duals and pullbacks of normed modules

We give a general description of the dual of the pullback of a normed module. Ours is the natural generalization to the context of modules of the well-known fact that the dual of the Lebesgue-Bochner space $L^p([0,1],B)$ consists - quite roughly said - of $L^q$ maps from $[0,1]$ to the dual $B'$ of $B$ equipped with the weak$^*$ topology. In order to state our result, we study various fiberwise descriptions of a normed module that are of independent interest.

Variational problems concerning sub-Finsler metrics in Carnot groups

This paper is devoted to the study of geodesic distances defined on a subdomain of a given Carnot group, which are bounded both from above and from below by fixed multiples of the Carnot-Carathéodory distance. We show that the uniform convergence (on compact sets) of these distances can be equivalently characterized in terms of $Γ$-convergence of several kinds of variational problems. Moreover, we investigate the relation between the class of intrinsic distances, their metric derivatives and the sub-Finsler convex metrics defined on the horizontal bundle.

Isoperimetric sets in spaces with lower bounds on the Ricci curvature

In this paper we study regularity and topological properties of volume constrained minimizers of quasi-perimeters in $\sf RCD$ spaces where the reference measure is the Hausdorff measure. A quasi-perimeter is a functional given by the sum of the usual perimeter and of a suitable continuous term. In particular, isoperimetric sets are a particular case of our study. We prove that on an ${\sf RCD}(K,N)$ space $({\rm X},{\sf d},\mathcal{H}^N)$, with $K\in\mathbb R$, $N\geq 2$, and a uniform bound from below on the volume of unit balls, volume constrained minimizers of quasi-perimeters are open bounded sets with $(N-1)$-Ahlfors regular topological boundary coinciding with the essential boundary. The proof is based on a new Deformation Lemma for sets of finite perimeter in ${\sf RCD}(K,N)$ spaces $({\rm X},{\sf d},\mathfrak m)$ and on the study of interior and exterior points of volume constrained minimizers of quasi-perimeters. The theory applies to volume constrained minimizers in smooth Riemannian manifolds, possibly with boundary, providing a general regularity result for such minimizers in the smooth setting.

Ultralimits of pointed metric measure spaces

The aim of this paper is to study ultralimits of pointed metric measure spaces (possibly unbounded and having infinite mass). We prove that ultralimits exist under mild assumptions and are consistent with the pointed measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence. We also introduce a weaker variant of pointed measured Gromov-Hausdorff convergence, for which we can prove a version of Gromov's compactness theorem by using the ultralimit machinery. This compactness result shows that, a posteriori, our newly introduced notion of convergence is equivalent to the pointed measured Gromov one. Another byproduct of our ultralimit construction is the identification of direct and inverse limits in the category of pointed metric measure spaces.

A short proof of the infinitesimal Hilbertianity of the weighted Euclidean space

We provide a quick proof of the following known result: the Sobolev space associated with the Euclidean space, endowed with the Euclidean distance and an arbitrary Radon measure, is Hilbert. Our new approach relies upon the properties of the Alberti-Marchese decomposability bundle. As a consequence of our arguments, we also prove that if the Sobolev norm is closable on compactly-supported smooth functions, then the reference measure is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure.

Testing the Sobolev property with a single test plan

We prove that in a vast class of metric measure spaces (namely, those whose associated Sobolev space is separable) the following property holds: a single test plan can be used to recover the minimal weak upper gradient of any Sobolev function. This means that, in order to identify which are the exceptional curves in the weak upper gradient inequality, it suffices to consider the negligible sets of a suitable Borel measure on curves, rather than the ones of the $p$-modulus. Moreover, on $\sf RCD$ spaces we can improve our result, showing that the test plan can be also chosen to be concentrated on an equi-Lipschitz family of curves.

Infinitesimal Hilbertianity of weighted Riemannian manifolds

The main result of this paper is the following: any `weighted' Riemannian manifold $(M,g,μ)$ - i.e. endowed with a generic non-negative Radon measure $μ$ - is `infinitesimally Hilbertian', which means that its associated Sobolev space $W^{1,2}(M,g,μ)$ is a Hilbert space. We actually prove a stronger result: the abstract tangent module (à la Gigli) associated to any weighted reversible Finsler manifold $(M,F,μ)$ can be isometrically embedded into the space of all measurable sections of the tangent bundle of $M$ that are $2$-integrable with respect to $μ$.

Behaviour of the reference measure on $\sf RCD$ spaces under charts

Mondino and Naber recently proved that finite dimensional $\sf RCD$ spaces are rectifiable. Here we show that the push-forward of the reference measure under the charts built by them is absolutely continuous with respect to the Lebesgue measure. This result, read in conjunction with another recent work of us, has relevant implications on the structure of tangent spaces to $\sf RCD$ spaces. A key tool that we use is a recent paper by De Philippis-Rindler about the structure of measures on the Euclidean space.

Equivalence of two different notions of tangent bundle on rectifiable metric measure spaces

We prove that for a suitable class of metric measure spaces, the abstract notion of tangent module as defined by the first author can be isometrically identified with the space of $L^2$-sections of the `Gromov-Hausdorff tangent bundle'. The class of spaces $({\rm X},{\sf d},{\mathfrak m})$ we consider are PI spaces that for every $\varepsilon>0$ admit a countable collection of Borel sets $(U_i)$ covering ${\mathfrak m}$-a.e.\ ${\rm X}$ and corresponding $(1+\varepsilon)$-biLipschitz maps $φ_i:U_i\to{\mathbb R}^{k_i}$ such that $(φ_i)_*{\mathfrak m}\lower3pt\hbox{$|_{U_i}$}\ll\mathcal L^{k_i}$. This class is known to contain ${\sf RCD}^*(K,N)$ spaces. Part of the work we carry out is that to give a meaning to notion of $L^2$-sections of the Gromov-Hausdorff tangent bundle, in particular explaining what it means to have a measurable map assigning to ${\mathfrak m}$-a.e.\ $x\in {\rm X}$ an element of the pointed-Gromov-Hausdorff limit of the blow-up of ${\rm X}$ at $x$.
