On the Estimation of Pointwise Dimension

Our goal in this paper is to develop an effective estimator of fractal dimension. We survey existing ideas in dimension estimation, with a focus on the currently popular method of Grassberger and Procaccia for the estimation of correlation dimension. There are two major difficulties in estimation based on this method. The first is the insensitivity of correlation dimension itself to differences in dimensionality over data, which we term "dimension blindness". The second comes from the reliance of the method on the inference of limiting behavior from finite data. We propose pointwise dimension as an object for estimation in response to the dimension blindness of correlation dimension. Pointwise dimension is a local quantity, and the distribution of pointwise dimensions over the data contains the information to which correlation dimension is blind. We use a "limit-free" description of pointwise dimension to develop a new estimator. We conclude by discussing potential applications of our estimator as well as some challenges it raises.

Ranks of elliptic curves over cyclic cubic, quartic, and sextic extensions

For a given group $G$ and an elliptic curve $E$ defined over a number field $K$, I discuss the problem of finding $G$-extensions of $K$ over which $E$ gains rank. I prove the following theorem, extending a result of Fearnley, Kisilevsky, and Kuwata: Let $n = 3,4,$ or $6$. If $K$ contains its $n^{th}$-roots of unity then, for any elliptic curve $E$ over $K$, there are infinitely many $\mathbb{Z}/n\mathbb{Z}$-extensions of $K$ over which $E$ gains rank.

Cross-wired lamplighter groups

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a locally compact group to be isomorphic to a closed cocompact subgroup in the isometry group of a Diestel-Leader graph. As a consequence of this condition, we see that every cocompact lattice in the isometry group of a Diestel-Leader graph admits a transitive, proper action on some other Diestel-Leader graph. We also give some examples of lattices that are not virtually lamplighters. This implies the class of discrete groups commensurable to lamplighter groups is not closed under quasi-isometries and, combined with work of Eskin, Fisher and Whyte, gives a characterization of their quasi-isometry class.
