On the quasi-isometric classification of locally compact groups

This (quasi-)survey addresses the quasi-isometry classification of locally compact groups, with an emphasis on amenable hyperbolic locally compact groups. This encompasses the problem of quasi-isometry classification of homogeneous negatively curved manifolds. A main conjecture provides a general description; an extended discussion reduces this conjecture to more specific statements. In the course of the paper, we provide statements of quasi-isometric rigidity for general symmetric spaces of noncompact type and also discuss accessibility issues in the realm of compactly generated locally compact groups.

Realizations of groups of piecewise continuous transformations of the circle

We study the near action of the group PC of piecewise continuous self-transformations of the circle. Elements of this group are only defined modulo indeterminacy on a finite subset, which raises the question of realizability: a subgroup of PC is said to be realizable if it can be lifted to a group of permutations of the circle. We show that every finitely generated abelian subgroup of PC is realizable. We show that this is not true for arbitrary subgroups, by exhibiting a non-realizable finitely generated subgroup of the group of interval exchanges with flips. The group of (oriented) interval exchanges is obviously realizable (choosing the unique left-continuous representative). We show that it has only two realizations (up to conjugation by a finitely supported permutation): the left and right-continuous ones.

On sublinear bilipschitz equivalence of groups

We discuss the notion of sublinearly bilipschitz equivalences (SBE), which generalize quasi-isometries, allowing some additional terms that behave sublinearly with respect to the distance from the origin. Such maps were originally motivated by the fact they induce bilipschitz homeomorphisms between asymptotic cones. We prove here that for hyperbolic groups, they also induce Hölder homeomorphisms between the boundaries. This yields many basic examples of hyperbolic groups that are pairwise non-SBE. Besides, we check that subexponential growth is an SBE-invariant. The central part of the paper addresses nilpotent groups. While classification up to sublinearly bilipschitz equivalence is known in this case as a consequence of Pansu's theorems, its quantitative version is not. We introduce a computable algebraic invariant $e=e_G<1$ for every such group $G$, and check that $G$ is $O(r^e)$-bilipschitz equivalent to its associated Carnot group. Here $r\mapsto r^e$ is a quantitive sublinear bound. Finally, we define the notion of large-scale contractable and large-scale homothetic metric spaces. We check that these notions imply polynomial growth under general hypotheses, and formulate conjectures about groups with these properties.

Densely related groups

We study the class of densely related groups. These are finitely generated (or more generally, compactly generated locally compact) groups satisfying a strong negation of being finitely presented, in the sense that new relations appear at all scales. Here, new relations means relations that do not follow from relations of smaller size. Being densely related is a quasi-isometry invariant among finitely generated groups. We check that a densely related group has none of its asymptotic cones simply connected. In particular a lacunary hyperbolic group cannot be densely related. We prove that the Grigorchuk group is densely related. We also show that a finitely generated group that is (infinite locally finite)-by-cyclic and which satisfies a law must be densely related. Given a class $\mathcal{C}$ of finitely generated groups, we consider the following dichotomy: every group in $\mathcal{C}$ is either finitely presented or densely related. We show that this holds within the class of nilpotent-by-cyclic groups and the class of metabelian groups. In contrast, this dichotomy is no longer true for the class of $3$-step solvable groups.

Gradings on Lie algebras, systolic growth, and cohopfian properties of nilpotent groups

We study the existence of various types of gradings on Lie algebras, such as Carnot gradings or gradings in positive integers, and prove that the existence of such gradings is invariant under extensions of scalars. As an application, we prove that if G is a finitely generated nilpotent group, its systolic growth is asymptotically equivalent to its word growth if and only if the Malcev completion of G is Carnot. We also characterize when G is non-cohopfian, in terms of the existence of a non-trivial grading in non-negative integers, and deduce that this property only depends on its real (or even complex) Malcev completion.

Metric geometry of locally compact groups

This book offers to study locally compact groups from the point of view of appropriate metrics that can be defined on them, in other words to study "Infinite groups as geometric objects", as Gromov writes it in the title of a famous article. The theme has often been restricted to finitely generated groups, but it can favorably be played for locally compact groups. The development of the theory is illustrated by numerous examples, including matrix groups with entries in the the field of real or complex numbers, or other locally compact fields such as p-adic fields, isometry groups of various metric spaces, and, last but not least, discrete group themselves. Word metrics for compactly generated groups play a major role. In the particular case of finitely generated groups, they were introduced by Dehn around 1910 in connection with the Word Problem. Some of the results exposed concern general locally compact groups, such as criteria for the existence of compatible metrics on locally compact groups. Other results concern special classes of groups, for example those mapping onto the group of integers (the Bieri-Strebel splitting theorem for locally compact groups). Prior to their applications to groups, the basic notions of coarse and large-scale geometry are developed in the general framework of metric spaces. Coarse geometry is that part of geometry concerning properties of metric spaces that can be formulated in terms of large distances only. In particular coarse connectedness, coarse simple connectedness, metric coarse equivalences, and quasi-isometries of metric spaces are given special attention. The final chapters are devoted to the more restricted class of compactly presented groups, generalizing finitely presented groups to the locally compact setting. They can indeed be characterized as those compactly generated locally compact groups that are coarsely simply connected.

Conjugate complex homogeneous spaces with non-isomorphic fundamental groups

Let X=G/H be the quotient of a connected reductive algebraic C-group G defined over the field of complex numbers C by a finite subgroup H. We describe the topological fundamental group of the homogeneous space X, which is nonabelian when H is nonabelian. Further, we construct an example of a homogeneous space X and an automorphism s of C such that the topological fundamental groups of X and of the conjugate variety sX are not isomorphic.

Contracting automorphisms and L^p-cohomology in degree one

We characterize those Lie groups, and algebraic groups over a local field of characteristic zero, whose first reduced L^p-cohomology is zero for all p>1, extending a result of Pansu. As an application, we obtain a description of Gromov-hyperbolic groups among those groups. In particular we prove that any non-elementary Gromov-hyperbolic algebraic group over a non-Archimedean local field of zero characteristic is quasi-isometric to a 3-regular tree. We also extend the study to semidirect products of a general locally compact group by a cyclic group acting by contracting automorphisms.

On the Koszul map of Lie algebras

We motivate and study the reduced Koszul map, relating the invariant bilinear maps on a Lie algebra and the third homology. We show that it is concentrated in degree 0 for any grading in a torsion-free abelian group, and in particular it vanishes whenever the Lie algebra admits a positive grading. We also provide an example of a 12-dimensional nilpotent Lie algebra whose reduced Koszul map does not vanish. In an appendix, we reinterpret the results of Neeb and Wagemann about the second homology of current Lie algebras, which are closely related to the reduced Koszul map.

Dehn function and asymptotic cones of Abels' group

We prove that Abels' group over an arbitrary nondiscrete locally compact field has a quadratic Dehn function. As applications, we exhibit connected Lie groups and polycyclic groups whose asymptotic cones have uncountable abelian fundamental group. We also obtain, from the case of finite characteristic, uncountably many non-quasi-isometric finitely generated solvable groups, as well as peculiar examples of fundamental groups of asymptotic cones.

Sofic profile and computability of Cremona groups

In this paper, we show that Cremona groups are sofic. We actually introduce a quantitative notion of soficity, called sofic profile, and show that the group of birational transformations of a d-dimensional variety has sofic profile at most polynomial of degree d. We also observe that finitely generated subgroups of the Cremona group have a solvable word problem. This provides examples of finitely generated groups with no embeddings into any Cremona group, answering a question of S. Cantat.

Asymptotic cones of Lie groups and cone equivalences

We introduce cone bilipschitz equivalences between metric spaces. These are maps, more general than quasi-isometries, that induce a bilipschitz homeomorphism between asymptotic cones. Non-trivial examples appear in the context of Lie groups, and we thus prove that the study of asymptotic cones of connected Lie groups can be reduced to that of solvable Lie groups of a special form. We also focus on asymptotic cones of nilpotent groups.

Bounded characteristic classes and flat bundles

Let G be a connected Lie group, G^d the underlying discrete group, and BG, BG^d their classifying spaces. Let R denote the radical of G. We show that all classes in the image of the canonical map in cohomology H^*(BG,R)->H^*(BG^d,R) are bounded if and only if the derived group [R,R] is simply connected. We also give equivalent conditions in terms of stable commutator length and distortion.

Cross-wired lamplighter groups

We give a necessary and sufficient condition for a locally compact group to be isomorphic to a closed cocompact subgroup in the isometry group of a Diestel-Leader graph. As a consequence of this condition, we see that every cocompact lattice in the isometry group of a Diestel-Leader graph admits a transitive, proper action on some other Diestel-Leader graph. We also give some examples of lattices that are not virtually lamplighters. This implies the class of discrete groups commensurable to lamplighter groups is not closed under quasi-isometries and, combined with work of Eskin, Fisher and Whyte, gives a characterization of their quasi-isometry class.

On equivariant embeddings of generalized Baumslag-Solitar groups

Let G be a group acting cocompactly without inversion on a tree X, with all vertex and edge stabilizers isomorphic to the same free abelian group Z^n. We prove that G has the Haagerup Property if and only if G is weakly amenable, and we give a necessary and sufficient condition for this to happen. In particular, denoting by d the rank of the fundamental group of the graph X modded out by G, we deduce that G has the Haagerup Property if either d=0, d=1, or n=1. In these three cases, we show that the L^p-compression rate of G is 1, and that its equivariant L^p-compression rate is max{1/p,1/2} (provided G is non-amenable). We also discuss quasi-isometric embeddings of G into a product of finitely many regular trivalent trees.

Metabelian groups with quadratic Dehn function and Baumslag-Solitar groups

We prove that groups in a certain class of metabelian locally compact groups, have quadratic Dehn function. As an application, we embed the solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups into finitely presented metabelian groups with quadratic Dehn function. Also, we prove that Baumslag's finitely presented metabelian groups, in which the lamplighter groups embed, have quadratic Dehn function.

A characterization of relative Kazhdan Property T for semidirect products with abelian groups

Let A be a locally compact abelian group, and H a locally compact group acting on A. Let G=HA be the semidirect product. We prove that the pair (G,A) has Kazhdan's Property T if and only if the only countably approximable H-invariant mean on the Borel subsets of the Pontryagin dual of A, supported at the neighbourhood of the trivial character, is the Dirac measure.

Compactly presented groups

This survey purports to be an elementary introduction to compactly presented groups, which are the analogue of finitely presented groups in the broader realm of locally compact groups. In particular, compact presentation is interpreted as a coarse simple connectedness condition on the Cayley graph, and in particular is a quasi-isometry invariant. In the appendix, an example of a Lie group, not quasi-isometric to any homogeneous graph, is given; the short argument relies on results of Trofimov and Pansu, anterior to~1990.

On Property (FA) for wreath products

We characterize permutational wreath products with Property (FA). For instance, the standard wreath product A wr B of two nontrivial countable groups A,B, has Property (FA) if and only if B has Property (FA) and A is a finitely generated group with finite abelianisation. We also prove an analogous result for hereditary Property (FA). On the other hand, we prove that many wreath products with hereditary Property (FA) are not quotients of finitely presented groups with the same property.

The Howe-Moore property for real and p-adic groups

We consider in this paper a relative version of the Howe-Moore Property, about vanishing at infinity of coefficients of unitary representations. We characterize this property in terms of ergodic measure-preserving actions. We also characterize, for linear Lie groups or p-adic Lie groups, the pairs with the relative Howe-Moore Property with respect to a closed, normal subgroup. This involves, in one direction, structural results on locally compact groups all of whose proper closed characteristic subgroups are compact, and, in the other direction, some results about the vanishing at infinity of oscillatory integrals.

A spectral gap property for subgroups of finite covolume in Lie groups

Let G be a real Lie group and H a lattice or, more generally, a closed subgroup of finite covolume in G. We show that the unitary representation lambda_{G/H} of G on L^2(G/H) has a spectral gap, that is, the restriction of lambda_{G/H} to the orthogonal of the constants in L^2(G/H) does not have almost invariant vectors. This answers a question of G. Margulis. We give an application to the spectral geometry of locally symmetric Riemannian spaces of infinite volume.
