Besov class via heat semigroup on Dirichlet spaces III: BV functions and sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates

With a view toward fractal spaces, by using a Korevaar-Schoen space approach, we introduce the class of bounded variation (BV) functions in a general framework of strongly local Dirichlet spaces with a heat kernel satisfying sub-Gaussian estimates. Under a weak Bakry-Émery curvature type condition, which is new in this setting, this BV class is identified with a heat semigroup based Besov class. As a consequence of this identification, properties of BV functions and associated BV measures are studied in detail. In particular, we prove co-area formulas, global $L^1$ Sobolev embeddings and isoperimetric inequalities. It is shown that for nested fractals or their direct products the BV class we define is dense in $L^1$. The examples of the unbounded Vicsek set, unbounded Sierpinski gasket and unbounded Sierpinski carpet are discussed.

Conformal transformation of uniform domains under weights that depend on distance to the boundary

The sphericalization procedure converts a Euclidean space into a compact sphere. In this note we propose a variant of this procedure for locally compact, rectifiably path-connected, non-complete, unbounded metric spaces by using conformal deformations that depend only on the distance to the boundary of the metric space. This deformation is locally bi-Lipschitz to the original domain near its boundary, but transforms the space into a bounded domain. We will show that if the original metric space is a uniform domain with respect to its completion, then the transformed space is also a uniform domain.

Neumann problems for $p$-harmonic functions, and induced nonlocal operators in metric measure spaces

Following ideas of Caffarelli and Silvestre in~\cite{CS}, and using recent progress in hyperbolic fillings, we define fractional $p$-Laplacians $(-Δ_p)^θ$ with $0<θ<1$ on any compact, doubling metric measure space $(Z,d,ν)$, and prove existence, regularity and stability for the non-homogenous non-local equation $(-Δ_p)^θu =f.$ These results, in turn, rest on the new existence, global Hölder regularity and stability theorems that we prove for the Neumann problem for $p$-Laplacians $Δ_p$, $1<p<\infty$, in bounded domains of measure metric spaces endowed with a doubling measure that supports a Poincaré inequality. Our work also extends beyond the compact setting, and includes as special cases much of the previous results by other authors in the Euclidean, Riemannian and Carnot group settings. Unlike other recent contributions in the metric measure spaces context, our work does not rely on the assumption that $(Z,d,ν)$ supports a Poincaré inequality.

Extension and trace results for doubling metric measure spaces and their hyperbolic fillings

In this paper we study connections between Besov spaces of functions on a compact metric space $Z$, equipped with a doubling measure, and the Newton--Sobolev space of functions on a uniform domain $X_\varepsilon$. This uniform domain is obtained as a uniformization of a (Gromov) hyperbolic filling of $Z$. To do so, we construct a family of hyperbolic fillings in the style of the work of Bonk and Kleiner and the work of Bourdon and Pajot. Then for each parameter $β>0$ we construct a lift $μ_β$ of the doubling measure $ν$ on $Z$ to $X_\varepsilon$, and show that $μ_β$ is doubling and supports a $1$-Poincaré inequality. We then show that for each $θ$ with $0<θ<1$ and $p\ge 1$ there is a choice of $β=p(1-θ)\logα$ such that the Besov space $B^θ_{p,p}(Z)$ is the trace space of the Newton--Sobolev space $N^{1,p}(X_\varepsilon,μ_β)$ when $\varepsilon=\logα$. Finally, we exploit the tools of potential theory on $X_\varepsilon$ to obtain fine properties of functions in $B^θ_{p,p}(Z)$, such as their quasicontinuity and quasieverywhere existence of $L^q$-Lebesgue points with $q=s_νp/(s_ν-pθ)$, where $s_ν$ is a doubling dimension associated with the measure $ν$ on $Z$. Applying this to compact subsets of Euclidean spaces improves upon a result of Netrusov in $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Asymptotic behavior of BV functions and sets of finite perimeter in metric measure spaces

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of BV functions in complete metric measure spaces equipped with a doubling measure supporting a $1$-Poincaré inequality. We show that at almost every point $x$ outside the Cantor and jump parts of a BV function, the asymptotic limit of the function is a Lipschitz continuous function of least gradient on a tangent space to the metric space based at $x$. We also show that, at co-dimension $1$ Hausdorff measure almost every measure-theoretic boundary point of a set $E$ of finite perimeter, there is an asymptotic limit set $(E)_\infty$ corresponding to the asymptotic expansion of $E$ and that every such asymptotic limit $(E)_\infty$ is a quasiminimal set of finite perimeter. We also show that the perimeter measure of $(E)_\infty$ is Ahlfors co-dimension $1$ regular.

Besov class via heat semigroup on Dirichlet spaces I: Sobolev type inequalities

We introduce heat semigroup-based Besov classes in the general framework of Dirichlet spaces. General properties of those classes are studied and quantitative regularization estimates for the heat semigroup in this scale of spaces are obtained. As a highlight of the paper, we obtain a far reaching $L^p$-analogue, $p \ge 1$, of the Sobolev inequality that was proved for $p=2$ by N. Varopoulos under the assumption of ultracontractivity for the heat semigroup. The case $p=1$ is of special interest since it yields isoperimetric type inequalities.

Besov class via heat semigroup on Dirichlet spaces II: BV functions and Gaussian heat kernel estimates

We introduce the class of bounded variation (BV) functions in a general framework of strictly local Dirichlet spaces with doubling measure. Under the 2-Poincaré inequality and a weak Bakry-Émery curvature type condition, this BV class is identified with the heat semigroup based Besov class $\mathbf{B}^{1,1/2}(X)$ that was introduced in our previous paper. Assuming furthermore a quasi Bakry-Émery curvature type condition, we identify the Sobolev class $W^{1,p}(X)$ with $\mathbf{B}^{p,1/2}(X)$ for $p>1$. Consequences of those identifications in terms of isoperimetric and Sobolev inequalities with sharp exponents are given.

Equivalence of solutions of eikonal equation in metric spaces

In this paper we prove the equivalence between some known notions of solutions to the eikonal equation and more general analogs of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations in complete and rectifiably connected metric spaces. The notions considered are that of curve-based viscosity solutions, slope-based viscosity solutions, and Monge solutions. By using the induced intrinsic (path) metric, we reduce the metric space to a length space and show the equivalence of these solutions to the associated Dirichlet boundary problem. Without utilizing the boundary data, we also localize our argument and directly prove the equivalence for the definitions of solutions. Regularity of solutions related to the Euclidean semi-concavity is discussed as well.

Traces and extensions of certain weighted Sobolev spaces on $\mathbb{R}^n$ and Besov functions on Ahlfors regular compact subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$

The focus of this paper is on Ahlfors $Q$-regular compact sets $E\subset\mathbb{R}^n$ such that, for each $Q-2<α\le 0$, the weighted measure $μ_α$ given by integrating the density $ω(x)=\text{dist}(x, E)^α$ yields a Muckenhoupt $\mathcal{A}_p$-weight in a ball $B$ containing $E$. For such sets $E$ we show the existence of a bounded linear trace operator acting from $W^{1,p}(B,μ_α)$ to $B^θ_{p,p}(E, \mathcal{H}^Q\vert_E)$ when $0<θ<1-\tfrac{α+n-Q}{p}$, and the existence of a bounded linear extension operator from $B^θ_{p,p}(E, \mathcal{H}^Q\vert_E)$ to $W^{1,p}(B, μ_α)$ when $1-\tfrac{α+n-Q}{p}\le θ<1$. We illustrate these results with $E$ as the Sierpiński carpet, the Sierpiński gasket, and the von Koch snowflake.

Infinity modulus and the essential metric

We study $\infty$-modulus on general metric spaces and establish its relation to shortest lengths of paths. This connection was already known for modulus on graphs, but the formulation in metric measure spaces requires more attention to exceptional families. We use this to define a metric that we call the essential metric, and show how this recovers a metric that had already been advanced in the literature by De Cecco and Palmieri.

Locally $p$-admissible measures on $\mathbb{R}$

In this note we show that locally $p$-admissible measures on $\mathbb{R}$ necessarily come from local Muckenhoupt $A_p$ weights. In the proof we employ the corresponding characterization of global $p$-admissible measures on $\mathbb{R}$ in terms of global $A_p$ weights due to Björn, Buckley and Keith, together with tools from analysis in metric spaces, more specifically preservation of the doubling condition and Poincaré inequalities under flattening, due to Durand-Cartagena and Li. As a consequence, the class of locally $p$-admissible weights on $\mathbb{R}$ is invariant under addition and satisfies the lattice property. We also show that measures that are $p$-admissible on an interval can be partially extended by periodical reflections to global $p$-admissible measures. Surprisingly, the $p$-admissibility has to hold on a larger interval than the reflected one, and an example shows that this is necessary.

The Liouville theorem for $p$-harmonic functions and quasiminimizers with finite energy

We show that, under certain geometric conditions, there are no nonconstant quasiminimizers with finite $p$th power energy in a (not necessarily complete) metric measure space equipped with a globally doubling measure supporting a global $p$-Poincaré inequality. The geometric conditions are that either (a) the measure has a sufficiently strong volume growth at infinity, or (b) the metric space is annularly quasiconvex (or its discrete version, annularly chainable) around some point in the space. Moreover, on the weighted real line $\mathbf{R}$, we characterize all locally doubling measures, supporting a local $p$-Poincaré inequality, for which there exist nonconstant quasiminimizers of finite $p$-energy, and show that a quasiminimizer is of finite $p$-energy if and only if it is bounded. As $p$-harmonic functions are quasiminimizers they are covered by these results.

Dichotomy of global capacity density in metric measure spaces

The variational capacity cap_p in Euclidean spaces is known to enjoy the density dichotomy at large scales, namely that for every subset E of R^n, inf_{x in R^n} (cap_p(E \cap B(x,r),B(x,2r)) / cap_p(B(x,r),B(x,2r))) is either zero or tends to 1 as r tends to infinity. We prove that this property still holds in unbounded complete geodesic metric spaces equipped with a doubling measure supporting a p-Poincaré inequality, but that it can fail in nongeodesic metric spaces and also for the Sobolev capacity in R^n. It turns out that the shape of balls impacts the validity of the density dichotomy. Even in more general metric spaces, we construct families of sets, such as John domains, for which the density dichotomy holds. Our arguments include an exact formula for the variational capacity of superlevel sets for capacitary potentials and a quantitative approximation from inside of the variational capacity.

Neumann problem for p-Laplace equation in metric spaces using a variational approach: existence, boundedness, and boundary regularity

We employ a variational approach to study the Neumann boundary value problem for the $p$-Laplacian on bounded smooth-enough domains in the metric setting, and show that solutions exist and are bounded. The boundary data considered are Borel measurable bounded functions. We also study boundary continuity properties of the solutions. One of the key tools utilized is the trace theorem for Newton-Sobolev functions, and another is an analog of the De Giorgi inequality adapted to the Neumann problem.

Notions of Dirichlet problem for functions of least gradient in metric measure spaces

We study two notions of Dirichlet problem associated with BV energy minimizers (also called functions of least gradient) in bounded domains in metric measure spaces whose measure is doubling and supports a $(1,1)$-Poincaré inequality. Since one of the two notions is not amenable to the direct method of the calculus of variations, we construct, based on an approach of [23, 29], solutions by considering the Dirichlet problem for $p$-harmonic functions, $p>1$, and letting $p\to 1$. Tools developed and used in this paper include the inner perimeter measure of a domain.

Trace and extension theorems for functions of bounded variation

In this paper we show that every $L^1$-integrable function on $\partialΩ$ can be obtained as the trace of a function of bounded variation in $Ω$ whenever $Ω$ is a domain with regular boundary $\partialΩ$ in a doubling metric measure space. In particular, the trace class of $BV(Ω)$ is $L^1(\partialΩ)$ provided that $Ω$ supports a 1-Poincaré inequality. We also construct a bounded linear extension from a Besov class of functions on $\partialΩ$ to $BV(Ω)$.

A characterization of BMO self-maps of a metric measure space

This paper studies functions of bounded mean oscillation (BMO) on metric spaces equipped with a doubling measure. The main result gives characterizations for mappings that preserve BMO. This extends the corresponding Euclidean results by Gotoh to metric measure spaces. The argument is based on a generalizations Uchiyama's construction of certain extremal BMO-functions and John-Nirenberg's lemma.

Boundary measures, generalized Gauss-Green formulas, and mean value property in metric measure spaces

We study mean value properties of harmonic functions in metric measure spaces. The metric measure spaces we consider have a doubling measure and support a (1,1)- Poincaré inequality. The notion of harmonicity is based on the Dirichlet form defined in terms of a Cheeger differentiable structure. By studying fine properties of the Green function on balls, we characterize harmonic functions in terms of a mean value property. As a consequence, we obtain a detailed description of Poisson kernels. We shall also obtain a Gauss-Green type formula for sets of finite perimeter which posses a Minkowski content characterization of the perimeter. For the Gauss-Green formula we introduce a suitable notion of the interior normal trace of a regular ball.

Fine properties and a notion of quasicontinuity for BV functions on metric spaces

On a metric space equipped with a doubling measure supporting a Poincaré inequality, we show that given a BV function, discarding a set of small $1$-capacity makes the function continuous outside its jump set and ``one-sidedly" continuous in its jump set. We show that such a property implies, in particular, that the measure theoretic boundary of a set of finite perimeter separates the measure theoretic interior of the set from its measure theoretic exterior, both in the sense of the subspace topology outside sets of small $1$-capacity, and in the sense of $1$-almost every curve.

Trace theorems for functions of bounded variation in metric spaces

In this paper we show existence of traces of functions of bounded variation on the boundary of a certain class of domains in metric measure spaces equipped with a doubling measure supporting a $1$-Poincaré inequality, and obtain $L^1$ estimates of the trace functions. In contrast with the treatment of traces given in other papers on this subject, the traces we consider do not require knowledge of the function in the exterior of the domain. We also establish a Maz'ya-type inequality for functions of bounded variation that vanish on a set of positive capacity.

Geometry of prime end boundary and the Dirichlet problem for bounded domains in metric spaces

In this note we study the Dirichlet problem associated with a version of prime end boundary of a bounded domain in a complete metric measure space equipped with a doubling measure supporting a Poincare inequality. We show the resolutivity of functions that are continuous on the prime end boundary and are Lipschitz regular when restricted to the subset of all prime ends whose impressions are singleton sets. We also consider a new notion of capacity adapted to the prime end boundary, and show that bounded perturbations of such functions on subsets of the prime end boundary with zero capacity are resolutive and that their Perron solutions coincide with the Perron solution of the original functions. We also describe some examples which demonstrate the efficacy of the prime end boundary approach in obtaining new results even for the classical Dirichlet problem for some Euclidean domains.

Hajlasz Gradients Are Upper Gradients

Let $(X, d, μ)$ be a metric measure space, with $μ$ a Borel regular measure. In this paper, we prove that, if $u\in L^1_{\mathop\mathrm{\,loc\,}}(X)$ and $g$ is a Hajłasz gradient of $u$, then there exists $\widetilde u$ such that $\widetilde u=u$ almost everywhere and $4g$ is a $p$-weak upper gradient of $\widetilde u$. This result avoids a priori assumption on the quasi-continuity of $u$ used in [Rev. Mat. Iberoamericana 16 (2000), 243-279]. As an application, an embedding of the Morrey-type function spaces based on Hajłasz-gradients into the corresponding function spaces based on upper gradients is obtained. We also introduce the notion of local Hajłasz gradient, and investigate the relations between local Hajłasz gradient and upper gradient.

Stability and continuity of functions of least gradient

In this note we prove that on metric measure spaces, functions of least gradient, as well as local minimizers of the area functional (after modification on a set of measure zero) are continuous everywhere outside their jump sets. As a tool, we develop some stability properties of sequences of least gradient functions. We also apply these tools to prove a maximum principle for functions of least gradient that arise as solutions to a Dirichlet problem.

Intrinsic Geometry and Analysis of Diffusion Processes and $L^\infty$-Variational Problems

The aim of this paper is two-fold: First, we obtain a better understanding of the intrinsic distance of diffusion processes. Precisely, (i) for all $n\ge1$, the diffusion matrix $A$ is weak upper semicontinuous on $Ω$ if and only if the intrinsic differential and the local intrinsic distance structures coincide; (ii) if $n=1$, or if $n\ge2$ and $A$ is weak upper semicontinuous on $Ω$, the intrinsic distance and differential structures always coincide; (iii) if $n\ge2$ and $A$ fails to be weak upper semicontinuous on $Ω$, the (non-) coincidence of the intrinsic distance and differential structures depend on the geometry of the non-weak-upper-semicontinuity set of $A$. Second, for an arbitrary diffusion matrix $A$, we show that the intrinsic distance completely determines the absolute minimizer of the corresponding $L^\infty$-variational problem, and then obtain the existence and uniqueness for given boundary data. We also give an example of a diffusion matrix $A$ for which there is an absolute minimizer that is not of class $C^1$. When $A$ is continuous, we also obtain the linear approximation property of the absolute minimizer.

The Dirichlet problem for p-harmonic functions with respect to the Mazurkiewicz boundary

In this paper we develop the Perron method for solving the Dirichlet problem for the analog of the p-Laplacian, i.e. for p-harmonic functions, with Mazurkiewicz boundary values. The setting considered here is that of metric spaces, where the boundary of the domain in question is replaced with the Mazurkiewicz boundary. Resolutivity for Sobolev and continuous functions, as well as invariance results for perturbations on small sets, are obtained. We use these results to improve the known resolutivity and invariance results for functions on the standard (metric) boundary. We also illustrate the results of this paper by discussing several examples.

The Mazurkiewicz distance and sets that are finitely connected at the boundary

We study local connectedness, local accessibility and finite connectedness at the boundary, in relation to the compactness of the Mazurkiewicz completion of a bounded domain in a metric space. For countably connected planar domains we obtain a complete characterization. It is also shown exactly which parts of this characterization fail in higher dimensions and in metric spaces.

Prime ends for domains in metric spaces

In this paper we propose a new definition of prime ends for domains in metric spaces under rather general assumptions. We compare our prime ends to those of Carathéodory and Näkki. Modulus ends and prime ends, defined by means of the \p-modulus of curve families, are also discussed and related to the prime ends. We provide characterizations of singleton prime ends and relate them to the notion of accessibility of boundary points, and introduce a topology on the prime end boundary. We also study relations between the prime end boundary and the Mazurkiewicz boundary. Generalizing the notion of John domains, we introduce almost John domains, and we investigate prime ends in the settings of John domains, almost John domains and domains which are finitely connected at the boundary.

Comparisons of relative BV-capacities and Sobolev capacity in metric spaces

We study relations between the variational Sobolev 1-capacity and versions of variational BV-capacity in a complete metric space equipped with a doubling measure and supporting a weak $(1,1)$-Poincaré inequality. We prove the equality of 1-modulus and 1-capacity, extending the known results for $1 < p < \infty$ to also cover the more geometric case $p = 1$. Then we give alternative definitions for variational BV-capacities and obtain equivalence results between them. Finally we study relations between total 1-capacity and versions of BV-capacity.

Regularity of sets with quasiminimal boundary surfaces in metric spaces

This paper studies regularity of perimiter quasiminimizing sets in metric measure spaces with a doubling measure and a Poincare inequality. The main result shows that the measure theoretic boundary of a quasiminimizing set coincides with the topological boundary. We also show that such a set has finite Minkowski content and apply the regularity theory to study rectifiability issues related to quasiminimal sets in strong A_{\infty}-weighted Euclidean case.

A Rigidity Property of Some Negatively Curved Solvable Lie Groups

We show that for some negatively curved solvable Lie groups, all self quasiisometries are almost isometries. We prove this by showing that all self quasisymmetric maps of the ideal boundary (of the solvable Lie groups) are bilipschitz with respect to the visual metric. We also define parabolic visual metrics on the ideal boundary of Gromov hyperbolic spaces and relate them to visual metrics.

Equivalence and self-improvement of p-fatness and Hardy's inequality, and association with uniform perfectness

We present an easy proof that $p$--Hardy's inequality implies uniform $p$--fatness of the boundary when $p=n$. The proof works also in metric space setting and demonstrates the self--improving phenomenon of the $p$--fatness. We also explore the relationship between $p$-fatness, $p$-Hardy inequality, and the uniform perfectness for all $p\ge 1$, and demonstrate that in the Ahlfors $Q$-regular metric measure space setting with $p=Q$, these three properties are equivalent.
