A characterization of BV and Sobolev functions via nonlocal functionals in metric spaces

We study a characterization of BV and Sobolev functions via nonlocal functionals in metric spaces equipped with a doubling measure and supporting a Poincaré inequality. Compared with previous works, we consider more general functionals. We also give a counterexample in the case $p=1$ demonstrating that unlike in Euclidean spaces, in metric measure spaces the limit of the nonlocal functions is only comparable, not necessarily equal, to the variation measure $\| Df\|(Ω)$.

Metric quasiconformality and Sobolev regularity in non-Ahlfors regular spaces

Given a homeomorphism $f\colon X\to Y$ between $Q$-dimensional spaces $X,Y$, we show that $f$ satisfying the metric definition of quasiconformality outside suitable exceptional sets implies that $f$ belongs to the Sobolev class $N_{\rm{loc}}^{1,p}(X;Y)$, where $1< p\le Q$, and also implies one direction of the geometric definition of quasiconformality. Unlike previous results, we only assume a pointwise version of Ahlfors $Q$-regularity, which particularly enables various weighted spaces to be included in the theory. Unexpectedly, we can apply this to obtain results that are new even in the classical Euclidean setting. In particular, in spaces including the Carnot groups, we are able to prove the Sobolev regularity $f\in N_{\rm{loc}}^{1,Q}(X;Y)$ without the strong assumption of the infinitesimal distortion $h_f$ belonging to $L^{\infty}(X)$.

Quasiconformal, Lipschitz, and BV mappings in metric spaces

Consider a mapping $f\colon X\to Y$ between two metric measure spaces. We study generalized versions of the local Lipschitz number $\mathrm{Lip} f$, as well as of the distortion number $H_f$ that is used to define quasiconformal mappings. Using these, we give sufficient conditions for $f$ being a BV mapping $f\in BV_{\mathrm{loc}}(X;Y)$ or a Newton-Sobolev mapping $f\in N_{\mathrm{loc}}^{1,p}(X;Y)$, with $1\le p<\infty$.

Asymptotic behavior of BV functions and sets of finite perimeter in metric measure spaces

In this paper, we study the asymptotic behavior of BV functions in complete metric measure spaces equipped with a doubling measure supporting a $1$-Poincaré inequality. We show that at almost every point $x$ outside the Cantor and jump parts of a BV function, the asymptotic limit of the function is a Lipschitz continuous function of least gradient on a tangent space to the metric space based at $x$. We also show that, at co-dimension $1$ Hausdorff measure almost every measure-theoretic boundary point of a set $E$ of finite perimeter, there is an asymptotic limit set $(E)_\infty$ corresponding to the asymptotic expansion of $E$ and that every such asymptotic limit $(E)_\infty$ is a quasiminimal set of finite perimeter. We also show that the perimeter measure of $(E)_\infty$ is Ahlfors co-dimension $1$ regular.

A new Federer-type characterization of sets of finite perimeter in metric spaces

Federer's characterization states that a set $E\subset \mathbb{R}^n$ is of finite perimeter if and only if $\mathcal H^{n-1}(\partial^*E)<\infty$. Here the measure-theoretic boundary $\partial^*E$ consists of those points where both $E$ and its complement have positive upper density. We show that the characterization remains true if $\partial^*E$ is replaced by a smaller boundary consisting of those points where the \emph{lower} densities of both $E$ and its complement are at least a given number. This result is new even in Euclidean spaces but we prove it in a more general complete metric space that is equipped with a doubling measure and supports a Poincaré inequality.

Notions of Dirichlet problem for functions of least gradient in metric measure spaces

We study two notions of Dirichlet problem associated with BV energy minimizers (also called functions of least gradient) in bounded domains in metric measure spaces whose measure is doubling and supports a $(1,1)$-Poincaré inequality. Since one of the two notions is not amenable to the direct method of the calculus of variations, we construct, based on an approach of [23, 29], solutions by considering the Dirichlet problem for $p$-harmonic functions, $p>1$, and letting $p\to 1$. Tools developed and used in this paper include the inner perimeter measure of a domain.

Strong approximation of sets of finite perimeter in metric spaces

In the setting of a metric space equipped with a doubling measure that supports a Poincaré inequality, we show that any set of finite perimeter can be approximated in the BV norm by a set whose topological and measure theoretic boundaries almost coincide. This result appears to be new even in the Euclidean setting. The work relies on a quasicontinuity-type result for BV functions proved by Lahti and Shanmugalingam (2016).

Fine properties and a notion of quasicontinuity for BV functions on metric spaces

On a metric space equipped with a doubling measure supporting a Poincaré inequality, we show that given a BV function, discarding a set of small $1$-capacity makes the function continuous outside its jump set and ``one-sidedly" continuous in its jump set. We show that such a property implies, in particular, that the measure theoretic boundary of a set of finite perimeter separates the measure theoretic interior of the set from its measure theoretic exterior, both in the sense of the subspace topology outside sets of small $1$-capacity, and in the sense of $1$-almost every curve.

Trace theorems for functions of bounded variation in metric spaces

In this paper we show existence of traces of functions of bounded variation on the boundary of a certain class of domains in metric measure spaces equipped with a doubling measure supporting a $1$-Poincaré inequality, and obtain $L^1$ estimates of the trace functions. In contrast with the treatment of traces given in other papers on this subject, the traces we consider do not require knowledge of the function in the exterior of the domain. We also establish a Maz'ya-type inequality for functions of bounded variation that vanish on a set of positive capacity.

Extensions and traces of functions of bounded variation on metric spaces

In the setting of a metric space equipped with a doubling measure and supporting a Poincaré inequality, and based on results by Björn and Shanmugalingam (2007), we show that functions of bounded variation can be extended from any bounded uniform domain to the whole space. Closely related to extensions is the concept of boundary traces, which have previously been studied by Hakkarainen et al. (2014). On spaces that satisfy a suitable locality condition for sets of finite perimeter, we establish some basic results for the traces of functions of bounded variation. Our analysis of traces also produces novel results on the behavior of functions of bounded variation in their jump sets.

Relaxation and integral representation for functionals of linear growth on metric measure spaces

This article studies an integral representation of functionals of linear growth on metric measure spaces with a doubling measure and a Poincaré inequality. Such a functional is defined through relaxation, and it defines a Radon measure on the space. For the singular part of the functional, we get the expected integral representation with respect to the variation measure. A new feature is that in the representation for the absolutely continuous part, a constant appears already in the weighted Euclidean case. As an application we show that in a variational minimization problem related to the functional, boundary values can be presented as a penalty term.

Stability and continuity of functions of least gradient

In this note we prove that on metric measure spaces, functions of least gradient, as well as local minimizers of the area functional (after modification on a set of measure zero) are continuous everywhere outside their jump sets. As a tool, we develop some stability properties of sequences of least gradient functions. We also apply these tools to prove a maximum principle for functions of least gradient that arise as solutions to a Dirichlet problem.
