Compact Group Actions with the Tracial Rokhlin Property

We define a "tracial" analog of the Rokhlin property for actions of second countable compact groups on infinite dimensional simple separable unital C*-algebras. We prove that fixed point algebras under such actions (and, in the appropriate cases, crossed products by such actions) preserve simplicity, Property (SP), tracial rank zero, tracial rank at most one, the Popa property, tracial Jiang-Su stability, Jiang-Su stability when the algebra is nuclear, infiniteness, and pure infiniteness. We also show that the radius of comparison of the fixed point algebra is no larger than that of the original algebra. Our version of the tracial Rokhlin property is an exact generalization of the tracial Rokhlin property for actions of finite groups on classifiable C*-algebras (in the sense of the Elliott program), but for actions of finite groups on more general C*-algebras it may be stronger. We discuss several alternative versions of the tracial Rokhlin property. We give examples of actions of a totally disconnected infinite compact group on a UHF algebra, and of the circle group on a simple unital AT algebra and on the Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal{O}}_{\infty}$, which have our version of the tracial Rokhlin property, but do not have the Rokhlin property, or even finite Rokhlin dimension with commuting towers.

Group actions on simple tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing C*-algebras

We show that if $A$ is a simple (not necessarily unital) tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing C*-algebra and $α\colon G \to \mathrm{Aut} (A)$ is an action of a finite group $G$ on $A$ with the weak tracial Rokhlin property, then the crossed product $C^*(G, A,α)$ and the fixed point algebra $A^α$ are simple and tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing, and they are $\mathcal{Z}$-stable if, in addition, $A$ is separable and nuclear. The same conclusion holds for all intermediate C*-algebras of the inclusions $A^α\subseteq A$ and $A \subseteq C^*(G, A,α)$. We prove that if $A$ is a simple tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing C*-algebra, then, under a finiteness condition, the permutation action of the symmetric group $S_m$ on the minimal $m$-fold tensor product of $A$ has the weak tracial Rokhlin property. We define the weak tracial Rokhlin property for automorphisms of simple C*-algebras and we show that -- under a mild assumption -- (tracial) $\mathcal{Z}$-absorption is preserved under crossed products by such automorphisms.

Simple tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing C*-algebras

We define a notion of tracial $\mathcal{Z}$-absorption for simple not necessarily unital C*-algebras, study it systematically, and prove its permanence properties. This extends the notion defined by Hirshberg and Orovitz for unital C*-algebras. The Razak-Jacelon algebra, simple C*-algebras with tracial rank zero, and simple purely infinite C*-algebras are tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing. We obtain the first purely infinite examples of tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing C*-algebras which are not $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing. We use techniques from reduced free products of von~Neumann algebras to construct these examples. A stably finite example was given by Z. Niu and Q. Wang in 2021. We study the Cuntz semigroup of a simple tracially $\mathcal{Z}$-absorbing C*-algebra and prove that it is almost unperforated and the algebra is weakly almost divisible.

The SHAI property for the operators on L^p

A Banach space X has the SHAI (surjective homomorphisms are injective) property provided that for every Banach space Y, every continuous surjective algebra homomorphism from the bounded linear operators on X onto the bounded linear operators on Y is injective. The main result gives a sufficient condition for X to have the SHAI property. The condition is satisfied for L^p (0, 1) for 1 < p < \infty, spaces with symmetric bases that have finite cotype, and the Schatten p-spaces for 1 < p < \infty.

Centrally Large Subalgebras and Tracial ${\mathcal{Z}}$-Absorption

Let $A$ be a simple infinite dimensional stably finite unital C*-algebra, and let $B$ be a centrally large subalgebra of $A$. We prove that if $A$ is tracially ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing if and only if $B$ is tracially ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing. If $A$ and $B$ are also separable and nuclear, we prove that $A$ is ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing if and only if $B$ is ${\mathcal{Z}}$-absorbing.

Permanence of stable rank one for centrally large subalgebras and crossed products by minimal homeomorphisms

We define centrally large subalgebras of simple unital C*-algebras, strengthening the definition of large subalgebras in previous work. We prove that if A is any infinite dimensional simple separable unital C*-algebra which contains a centrally large subalgebra with stable rank one, then A has stable rank one. We also prove that large subalgebras of crossed product type are automatically centrally large. We use these results to prove that if X is a compact metric space which has a surjective continuous map to the Cantor set, and h is a minimal homeomorphism of X, then C* (Z, X, h) has stable rank one, regardless of the dimension of X or the mean dimension of h. In particular, the Giol-Kerr examples give crossed products with stable rank one but which are not stable under tensoring with the Jiang-Su algebra and are therefore not classifiable in terms of the Elliott invariant.

Simple nuclear C*-algebras not equivariantly isomorphic to their opposites

We exhibit examples of simple separable nuclear C*-algebras, along with actions of the circle group and outer actions of the integers, which are not equivariantly isomorphic to their opposite algebras. In fact, the fixed point subalgebras are not isomorphic to their opposites. The C*-algebras we exhibit are well behaved from the perspective of structure and classification of nuclear C*-algebras: they are unital C*-algebras in the UCT class, with finite nuclear dimension. One is an AH-algebra with unique tracial state and absorbs the CAR algebra tensorially. The other is a Kirchberg algebra.

Rokhlin dimension: obstructions and permanence properties

This paper is a further study of finite Rokhlin dimension for actions of finite groups and the integers on C*-algebras, introduced by the first author, Winter, and Zacharias. We extend the definition of finite Rokhlin dimension to the nonunital case. This definition behaves well with respect to extensions, and is sufficient to establish permanence of finite nuclear dimension and Z-absorption. We establish K-theoretic obstructions to the existence of actions of finite groups with finite Rokhlin dimension (in the commuting tower version). In particular, we show that there are no actions of any nontrivial finite group on the Jiang-Su algebra or on the Cuntz algebra O_\infty with finite Rokhlin dimension in this sense.

A Simple Separable Exact C*-Algebra not Anti-isomorphic to Itself

We give an example of an exact, stably finite, simple. separable C*-algebra D which is not isomorphic to its opposite algebra. Moreover, D has the following additional properties. It is stably finite, approximately divisible, has real rank zero and stable rank one, has a unique tracial state, and the order on projections over D is determined by traces. It also absorbs the Jiang-Su algebra Z, and in fact absorbs the 3^{\infty} UHF algebra. We can also explicitly compute the K-theory of D, namely K_0 (D) = Z[1/3] with the standard order, and K_1 (D) = 0, as well as the Cuntz semigroup of D.

Crossed products by spectrally free actions

We define spectral freeness for actions of discrete groups on C*-algebras. We relate spectral freeness to other freeness conditions; an example result is that for an action of a finite group, spectral freeness is equivalent to strong pointwise outerness, and also to the condition that the strong Connes spectrum of the action of the integers generated by a nontrivial group element is always nontrivial. We then prove permanence results for reduced crossed products by exact spectrally free actions, for crossed products by arbitrary actions of the two element group, and for extensions, direct limits, stable isomorphism, and several related constructions, for the following properties: The combination of pure infiniteness and the ideal property. Residual hereditary infiniteness (closely related to pure infiniteness). Residual (SP) (a strengthening of Property (SP) suitable for nonsimple C*-algebras). The weak ideal property (closely related to the ideal property). For the weak ideal property, we can allow arbitrary crossed products by any finite abelian group. These properties of C*-algebras are shown to have formulations of the same general type, allowing them all to be handled using a common set of theorems.

Crossed products of $L^p$ operator algebras and the K-theory of Cuntz algebras on $L^p$ spaces

For $p \in [1, \infty),$ we define and study full and reduced crossed products of algebras of operators on $σ$-finite $L^p$ spaces by isometric actions of second countable locally compact groups. We give universal properties for both crossed products. When the group is abelian, we prove the existence of a dual action on the full and reduced $L^p$ operator crossed products. When the group is discrete, we construct a conditional expectation to the original algebra which is faithful in a suitable sense. For a free action of a discrete group on a compact metric space $X,$ we identify all traces on the reduced $L^p$ operator crossed product, and if the action is also minimal we show that the reduced $L^p$ operator crossed product is simple. We prove that the full and reduced $L^p$ operator crossed products of an amenable $L^p$ operator algebra by a discrete amenable group are again amenable. We prove a Pimsner-Voiculescu exact sequence for the K-theory of reduced $L^p$ operator crossed products by ${\mathbb{Z}}.$ We show that the $L^p$ analogs ${\mathcal{O}}_d^p$ of the Cuntz algebras ${\mathcal{O}}_d$ are stably isomorphic to reduced $L^p$ operator crossed products of stabilized $L^p$ UHF algebra by ${\mathbb{Z}},$ and show that $K_0 ({\mathcal{O}}_d^p) \cong {\mathbb{Z}} / (d - 1) {\mathbb{Z}}$ and $K_1 ({\mathcal{O}}_d^p) = 0.$

Isomorphism, nonisomorphism, and amenability of L^p UHF algebras

In a previous paper, we introduced L^p UHF algebras for p in [1, \infty). We concentrated on the spatial L^p UHF algebras, which are classified up to isometric isomorphism by p and the scaled ordered K_0-group. In this paper, we concentrate on a larger class, the L^p UHF algebras of tensor product type constructed using diagonal similarities. Such an algebra is still simple and has the same K-theory as the corresponding spatial L^p UHF algebra. For each choice of p and the K-theory, we provide uncountably many nonisomorphic such algebras. We further characterize the spatial algebras among them. In particular, if A is one of these algebras, then A is isomorphic (not necessarily isometrically) to a spatial L^p UHF algebra if and only if A is amenable as a Banach algebra, also if and only if A has approximately inner tensor flip. These conditions are also equivalent to a natural numerical condition defined in terms of the ingredients used to construct the algebra.

Simplicity of UHF and Cuntz algebras on $L^p$~spaces

We prove that, for $p \in [1, \infty),$ and integers $d$ at least 2, the $L^p$ analog ${\mathcal{O}}_d^p$ of the Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal{O}}_d$ is a purely infinite simple amenable Banach algebra. The proof requires what we call the spatial $L^p$ UHF algebras, which are analogs of UHF algebras acting on $L^p$ spaces. As for the usual UHF C*-algebras, they have associated supernatural numbers. For fixed $p \in [1, \infty),$ we prove that any spatial $L^p$ UHF algebra is simple and amenable, and that two such algebras are isomorphic if and only if they have the same supernatural number (equivalently, the same scaled ordered $K_0$-group). For distinct $p_1, p_2 \in [1, \infty),$ we prove that no spatial $L^{p_1}$ UHF algebra is isomorphic to any spatial $L^{p_2}$ UHF algebra.

Analogs of Cuntz algebras on $L^p$ spaces

For $d = 2, 3, \ldots$ and $p \in [1, \infty),$ we define a class of representations $ρ$ of the Leavitt algebra $L_d$ on spaces of the form $L^p (X, μ),$ which we call the spatial representations. We prove that for fixed $d$ and $p,$ the Banach algebra ${\mathcal{O}_{d}^{p}}$ obtained as the closure of the image of $L_d$ under the representation $ρ$ is the same for all spatial representations $ρ.$ When $p = 2,$ we recover the usual Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal{O}}_{d}.$ We give a number of equivalent conditions for a representation to be spatial. We show that for distinct $p_1$ and $p_2$ in $[1, \infty)$ and arbitrary $d_1$ and $d_2$ in $\{ 2, 3, \ldots \},$ there is no nonzero continuous homomorphism from ${\mathcal{O}}_{d_1}^{p_1}$ to ${\mathcal{O}}_{d_2}^{p_2}.$

Permanence properties for crossed products and fixed point algebras of finite groups

For an action of a finite group on a C*-algebra, we present some conditions under which properties of the C*-algebra pass to the crossed product or the fixed point algebra. We mostly consider the ideal property, the projection property, topological dimension zero, and pure infiniteness. In many of our results, additional conditions are necessary on the group, the algebra, or the action. Sometimes the action must be strongly pointwise outer, and in a few results it must have the Rokhlin property. When the group is finite abelian, we prove that crossed products and fixed point algebras preserve topological dimension zero with no condition on the action. We give an example to show that the ideal property and the projection property do not pass to fixed point algebras (even for the two element group). The construction also gives an example of a C*-algebra which does not have the ideal property but such that the algebra of 2 by 2 matrices over it does have the ideal property; in fact, this matrix algebra has the projection property.

Profinite pro-C*-algebras and pro-C*-algebras of profinite groups

We define the profinite completion of a C*-algebra, which is a pro-C*-algebra, as well as the pro-C*-algebra of a profinite group. We show that the continuous representations of the pro-C*-algebra of a profinite group correspond to the unitary representations of the group which factor through a finite group. We define natural homomorphisms from the C*-algebra of a locally compact group and its profinite completion to the pro-C*-algebra of the profinite completion of the group. We give some conditions for injectivity or surjectivity of these homomorphisms, but an important question remains open.

The tracial Rokhlin property is generic

We prove several results of the following general form: automorphisms of (or actions of ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$ on) certain kinds of simple separable unital C*-algebras $A$ which have a suitable version of the Rokhlin property are generic among all automorphisms (or actions), or in a suitable class of automorphisms. That is, the ones with the version of the Rokhlin property contain a dense $G_δ$-subset of the set of all such automorphisms (or actions). Specifically, we prove the following. If $A$ is stable under tensoring with the Jiang-Su algebra $Z,$ and has tracial rank zero, then automorphisms with the tracial Rokhlin property are generic. If $A$ has tracial rank zero, or, more generally, $A$ is tracially approximately divisible together with a technical condition, then automorphisms with the tracial Rokhlin property are generic among the approximately inner automorphisms. If $A$ is stable under tensoring with the Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal{O}}_{\infty}$ or with a UHF algebra of infinite type, then actions of ${\mathbb{Z}}^d$ on $A$ with the Rokhlin property are generic among all actions of ${\mathbb{Z}}^d.$ We further give a related but more restricted result for actions of finite groups.

Equivariant semiprojectivity

We define equivariant semiprojectivity for C*-algebras equipped with actions of compact groups. We prove that the following examples are equivariantly semiprojective: arbitrary finite dimensional C*-algebras with arbitrary actions of compact groups; the Cuntz algebras ${\mathcal{O}}_d$ and extended Cuntz algebras $E_d,$ for finite $d,$ with quasifree actions of compact groups; the Cuntz algebra ${\mathcal{O}}_{\infty}$ with any quasifree action of a finite group. For actions of finite groups, we prove that equivariant semiprojectivity is equivalent to a form of equivariant stability of generators and relations. We also prove that if $G$ is finite, then $C^* (G)$ is graded semiprojective.

Realization of a simple higher dimensional noncommutative torus as a transformation group C*-algebra

Let $θ$ be a nondegenerate skew symmetric real $d$ by $d$ matrix, and let $A_θ$ be the corresponding simple higher dimensional noncommutative torus. Suppose that $d$ is odd, or that $d$ is greater or equal to 4 and the entries of $θ$ are not contained in a quadratic extension of $\mathbb{Q}$. Then $A_θ$ is isomorphic to the transformation group C*-algebra obtained from a minimal homeomorphism of a compact connected one dimensional space locally homeomorphic to the product of the interval and the Cantor set. The proof uses classification theory of C*-algebras.

Examples of different minimal diffeomorphisms giving the same C*-algebras

We give examples of minimal diffeomorphisms of compact connected manifolds which are not topologically orbit equivalent, but whose transformation group C*-algebras are isomorphic. The examples show that the following properties of a minimal diffeomorphism are not invariants of the transformation group C*-algebra: having topologically quasidiscrete spectrum; the action on singular cohomology (when the manifolds are diffeomorphic); the homotopy type of the manifold (when the manifolds have the same dimension); and the dimension of the manifold. These examples also give examples of nonconjugate isomorphic Cartan subalgebras, and of nonisomorphic Cartan subalgebras, of simple separable nuclear unital C*-algebras with tracial rank zero and satisfying the Universal Coefficient Theorem.

Embedding of exact C*-algebras and continuous fields in the Cuntz algebra O_2

We prove that any separable exact C*-algebra is isomorphic to a subalgebra of the Cuntz algebra ${\cal O}_2.$ We further prove that if $A$ is a simple separable unital nuclear C*-algebra, then ${\cal O}_2 \otimes A \cong {\cal O}_2,$ and if, in addition, $A$ is purely infinite, then ${\cal O}_{\infty} \otimes A \cong A.$ The embedding of exact C*-algebras in $\OA{2}$ is continuous in the following sense. If $A$ is a continuous field of C*-algebras over a compact manifold or finite CW complex $X$ with fiber $A (x)$ over $x \in X,$ such that the algebra of continuous sections of $A$ is separable and exact, then there is a family of injective homomorphisms $ϕ_x : A (x) \to {\cal O}_2$ such that for every continuous section $a$ of $A$ the function $x \mapsto ϕ_x (a (x))$ is continuous. Moreover, one can say something about the modulus of continuity of the functions $x \mapsto ϕ_x (a (x))$ in terms of the structure of the continuous field. In particular, we show that the continuous field $θ\mapsto A_θ$ of rotation algebras posesses unital embeddings $ϕ_θ$ in ${\cal O}_2$ such that the standard generators $u (θ)$ and $v (θ)$ are mapped to $\operatorname{Lip}^{1/2}$ functions.

C*-Algebras with the Approximate Positive Factorization Property

We say that a unital C*-algrebra A has the approximate positive factorization property (APFP) if every element of A is a norm limit of products of positive elements of A. (There is also a definition for the nonunital case.) T. Quinn has recently shown that a unital AF algebra has the APFP if and only if it has no finite dimensional quotients. This paper is a more systematic investigation of C*-algebras with the APFP. We prove various properties of such algebras. For example: They have connected invertible group, trivial K_1, and stable rank 1. In the unital case, the K_0 group separates the tracial states. The APFP passes to matrix algebras. and if I is an ideal in A such that I and A/I have the APFP, then so does A. We also give some new examples of C*-algebras with the APFP, including type II_1 factors and infinite-dimensional simple unital direct limits with slow dimension growth, real rank zero, and trivial K_1 group. An infinite- dimensional simple unital direct limit with slow dimension growth and with the APFP must have real rank zero, but we also give examples of unital algebras with the APFP which do not have real rank zero. Our analysis also leads to the introduction of a new concept of rank for a C*-algebra that may be of interest in the future.
