Computing cohomology groups that classify bundles of strongly self-absorbing $C^*$-algebras

Locally trivial bundles of $C^*$-algebras with fibre $D \otimes \mathcal{K}$ for a strongly self-absorbing $C^*$-algebra $D$ over a finite CW-complex $X$ form a group $E^1_D(X)$ that is the first group of a cohomology theory $E^*_D(X)$. In this paper we compute these groups by expressing them in terms of ordinary cohomology and connective $K$-theory. To compare the $C^*$-algebraic version of $gl_1(KU)$ with its classical counterpart we also develop a uniqueness result for the unit spectrum of complex periodic topological $K$-theory.

Bundles of strongly self-absorbing $C^*$-algebras with a Clifford grading

We extend our previous results on generalized Dixmier-Douady theory to graded $C^*$-algebras, as means for explicit computations of the invariants arising for bundles of ungraded $C^*$-algebras. For a strongly self-absorbing $C^*$-algebra $D$ and complex Clifford algebras $\mathbb{C}\ell_{n}$ we show that the classifying spaces of the groups of graded automorphisms $\mathrm{Aut}_{\text{gr}}(\mathbb{C}\ell_{n}\otimes \mathcal{K }\otimes D)$ admit compatible infinite loop space structures giving rise to a cohomology theory $\hat{E}^*_D(X)$. For $D$ stably finite and $X$ a finite CW-complex, we show that the tensor product operation defines a group structure on the isomorphism classes of locally trivial bundles of graded $C^*$-algebras with fibers $ \mathbb{C}\ell_{k}\otimes D \otimes \mathcal{K}$ and that this group is isomorphic to $H^0(X,\mathbb{Z}/2)\oplus \hat{E}^1_{D}(X)$. Moreover, we establish isomorphisms $\hat{E}^1_{D}(X)\cong H^1(X;\mathbb{Z}/2) \times_{_{tw}} E^1_{D}(X)$ and $\hat{E}^1_{D}(X)\cong E^1_{D\otimes \mathcal{O}_\infty}(X)$, where $E^1_{D}(X)$ is the group that classifies the locally trivial bundles with fibers $D\otimes \mathcal{K}$. In particular $E^1_{\mathcal{O}_\infty}(X)\cong H^1(X;\mathbb{Z}/2) \times_{_{tw}} E^1_{\mathcal{Z}}(X)$ where $\mathcal{Z}$ is the Jiang-Su algebra and the multiplication on the last two factors is twisted similarly to the Brauer theory for bundles with fibers the graded compact operators on a finite and respectively infinite dimensional Hilbert space.

Quasi-representations of groups and two-homology

The Exel-Loring formula asserts that two topological invariants associated to a pair of almost commuting unitary matrices coincide. Such a pair can be viewed as a quasi-representation of $\mathbb{Z}^2$. We give a generalization of this formula for countable discrete groups. We also show the nontriviality of the corresponding invariants for quasidiagonal groups which are coarsely embeddable in a Hilbert space and have nonvanishing second Betti number.

Simple nuclear C*-algebras not equivariantly isomorphic to their opposites

We exhibit examples of simple separable nuclear C*-algebras, along with actions of the circle group and outer actions of the integers, which are not equivariantly isomorphic to their opposite algebras. In fact, the fixed point subalgebras are not isomorphic to their opposites. The C*-algebras we exhibit are well behaved from the perspective of structure and classification of nuclear C*-algebras: they are unital C*-algebras in the UCT class, with finite nuclear dimension. One is an AH-algebra with unique tracial state and absorbs the CAR algebra tensorially. The other is a Kirchberg algebra.

Almost flat K-theory of classifying spaces

We give a rigorous account and prove continuity properties for the correspondence between almost flat bundles on a triangularizable compact connected space and the quasi-representations of its fundamental group. For a discrete countable group $Γ$ with finite classifying space $BΓ$, we study a correspondence between between almost flat K-theory classes on $BΓ$ and group homomorphism $K_0(C^*(Γ))\to \mathbb{Z}$ that are implemented by pairs of discrete asymptotic homomorphisms from $C^*(Γ)$ to matrix algebras.

Deformations of nilpotent groups and homotopy symmetric $C^*$-algebras

The homotopy symmetric $C^*$-algebras are those separable $C^*$-algebras for which one can unsuspend in E-theory. We find a new simple condition that characterizes homotopy symmetric nuclear $C^*$-algebras and use it to show that the property of being homotopy symmetric passes to nuclear $C^*$-subalgebras and it has a number of other significant permanence properties. As an application, we show that if $I(G)$ is the kernel of the trivial representation $ι:C^*(G)\to \mathbb{C}$ for a countable discrete torsion free nilpotent group $G$, then $I(G)$ is homotopy symmetric and hence the Kasparov group $KK(I(G),B)$ can be realized as the homotopy classes of asymptotic morphisms $[[I(G),B \otimes \mathcal{K}]]$ for any separable $C^*$-algebra $B$.

On groups with quasidiagonal C*-algebras

We examine the question of quasidiagonality for C*-algebras of discrete amenable groups from a variety of angles. We give a quantitative version of Rosenberg's theorem via paradoxical decompositions and a characterization of quasidiagonality for group C*-algebras in terms of embeddability of the groups. We consider several notable examples of groups, such as topological full groups associated with Cantor minimal systems and Abels' celebrated example of a finitely presented solvable group that is not residually finite, and show that they have quasidiagonal C*-algebras. Finally, we study strong quasidiagonality for group C*-algebras, exhibiting classes of amenable groups with and without strongly quasidiagonal C*-algebras.

Quasi-representations of surface groups

By a quasi-representation of a group $G$ we mean an approximately multiplicative map of $G$ to the unitary group of a unital $C^*$-algebra. A quasi-representation induces a partially defined map at the level $K$-theory. In the early 90s Exel and Loring associated two invariants to almost-commuting pairs of unitary matrices $u$ and $v$: one a $K$-theoretic invariant, which may be regarded as the image of the Bott element in $K_0(C(\mathbb{T}^2))$ under a map induced by quasi-representation of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ in U(n); the other is the winding number in $\mathbb{C}\setminus \{0\}$ of the closed path $t\mapsto \det(tvu + (1-t)uv)$. The so-called Exel-Loring formula states that these two invariants coincide if $\|uv - vu\|$ is sufficiently small. A generalization of the Exel-Loring formula for quasi-representations of a surface group taking values in U(n) was given by the second-named author. Here we further extend this formula for quasi-representations of a surface group taking values in the unitary group of a tracial unital $C^*$-algebra.

Unit spectra of K-theory from strongly self-absorbing C*-algebras

We give an operator algebraic model for the first group of the unit spectrum $gl_1(KU)$ of complex topological K-theory, i.e. $[X, BGL_1(KU)]$, by bundles of stabilized infinite Cuntz C*-algebras $O_{\infty} \otimes \K$. We develop similar models for the localizations of $KU$ at a prime $p$ and away from $p$. Our work is based on the $\mathcal{I}$-monoid model for the units of $K$-theory by Sagave and Schlichtkrull and it was motivated by the goal of finding connections between the infinite loop space structure of the classifying space of the automorphism group of stabilized strongly self-absorbing C*-algebras that arose in our generalization of the Dixmier-Douady theory and classical spectra from algebraic topology.

Recovering the Elliott invariant from the Cuntz semigroup

Let $A$ be a simple, separable C$^*$-algebra of stable rank one. We prove that the Cuntz semigroup of $\CC(\T,A)$ is determined by its Murray-von Neumann semigroup of projections and a certain semigroup of lower semicontinuous functions (with values in the Cuntz semigroup of $A$). This result has two consequences. First, specializing to the case that $A$ is simple, finite, separable and $\mathcal Z$-stable, this yields a description of the Cuntz semigroup of $\CC(\T,A)$ in terms of the Elliott invariant of $A$. Second, suitably interpreted, it shows that the Elliott functor and the functor defined by the Cuntz semigroup of the tensor product with the algebra of continuous functions on the circle are naturally equivalent.

The C*-algebra of a vector bundle

We prove that the Cuntz-Pimsner algebra O(E) of a vector bundle E over a compact metrizable space X is determined up to an isomorphism of C(X)-algebras by the ideal (1-[E])K(X) of the K-theory ring K(X). Moreover, if E and F are vector bundles of rank >1, then a unital embedding of C(X)-algebras of O(E) into O(F) exists if and only if 1-[E] is divisible by 1-[F] in the ring K(X). We introduce related, but more computable K-theory and cohomology invariants for O(E) and study their completeness. As an application we classify the unital separable continuous fields with fibers isomorphic to the Cuntz algebra O(m+1) over a finite connected CW complex X of dimension d< 2m+4 provided that the cohomology of X has no m-torsion.

E-Theory for C*-algebras over topological spaces

We define E-theory for separable C*-algebras over second countable topological spaces and establish its basic properties. This includes an approximation theorem that relates the E-theory over a general space to the E-theories over finite approximations to this space. We obtain effective criteria for determining the invertibility of E-theory elements over possibly infinite-dimensional spaces. Furthermore, we prove a Universal Multicoefficient Theorem for C*-algebras over totally disconnected metrisable compact spaces.

On the topology of the Kasparov groups and its applications

In this paper we establish a direct connection between stable approximate unitary equivalence for $*$-homomorphisms and the topology of the KK-groups which avoids entirely C*-algebra extension theory and does not require nuclearity assumptions. To this purpose we show that a topology on the Kasparov groups can be defined in terms of approximate unitary equivalence for Cuntz pairs and that this topology coincides with both Pimsner's topology and the Brown-Salinas topology. We study the generalized Rørdam group $KL(A,B)=KK(A,B)/\bar{0}$, and prove that if a separable exact residually finite dimensional C*-algebra satisfies the universal coefficient theorem in KK-theory, then it embeds in the UHF algebra of type $2^\infty$. In particular such an embedding exists for the C*-algebra of a second countable amenable locally compact maximally almost periodic group.
