Poisson approximation and Weibull asymptotics in the geometry of numbers

Minkowski's First Theorem and Dirichlet's Approximation Theorem provide upper bounds on certain minima taken over lattice points contained in domains of Euclidean spaces. We study the distribution of such minima and show, under some technical conditions, that they exhibit Weibull asymptotics with respect to different natural measures on the space of unimodular lattices in $\bR^d$. This follows from very general Poisson approximation results for shrinking targets which should be of independent interest. Furthermore, we show in the appendix that the logarithm laws of Kleinbock-Margulis, Khinchin and Gallagher can be deduced from our distributional results.

Counting in generic lattices and higher rank actions

We consider the problem of counting lattice points contained in domains in $\mathbb{R}^d$ defined by products of linear forms and we show that the normalized discrepancies in these counting problems satisfy non-degenerate Central Limit Theorems, provided that $d \geq 9$. We also study more refined versions pertaining to "spiraling of approximations". Our techniques are dynamical in nature and exploit effective exponential mixing of all orders for actions of higher-rank abelian groups on the space of unimodular lattices.

Aperiodic order and spherical diffraction, II: Translation bounded measures on homogeneous spaces

We study the auto-correlation measures of invariant random point processes in the hyperbolic plane which arise from various classes of aperiodic Delone sets. More generally, we study auto-correlation measures for large classes of Delone sets in (and even translation bounded measures on) arbitrary locally compact homogeneous metric spaces. We then specialize to the case of weighted model sets, in which we are able to derive more concrete formulas for the auto-correlation. In the case of Riemannian symmetric spaces we also explain how the auto-correlation of a weighted model set in a Riemannian symmetric space can be identified with a (typically non-tempered) positive-definite distribution on $\mathbb R^n$. This paves the way for a diffraction theory for such model sets, which will be discussed in the sequel to the present article.

Aperiodic order and spherical diffraction, III: The shadow transform and the diffraction formula

We define spherical diffraction measures for a wide class of weighted point sets in commutative spaces, i.e. proper homogeneous spaces associated with Gelfand pairs. In the case of the hyperbolic plane we can interpret the spherical diffraction measure as the Mellin transform of the auto-correlation distribution. We show that uniform regular model sets in commutative spaces have a pure point spherical diffraction measure. The atoms of this measure are located at the spherical automorphic spectrum of the underlying lattice, and the diffraction coefficients can be characterized abstractly in terms of the so-called shadow transform of the characteristic functions of the window. In the case of the Heisenberg group we can give explicit formulas for these diffraction coefficients in terms of Bessel and Laguerre functions.

Kudo-Continuity Of Entropy Functionals

We study in this paper real-valued functions on the space of all sub-$σ$-algebras of a probability measure space, and introduce the notion of Kudo-continuity, which is an a priori strengthening of continuity with respect to strong convergence. We show that a large class of entropy functionals are Kudo-continuous. On the way, we establish upper and lower continuity of various entropy functions with respect to asymptotic second order stochastic domination, which should be of independent interest. An application to the study of entropy spectra of $μ$-boundaries associated to random walks on locally compact groups is given.

Random walks on dense subgroups of locally compact groups

Let $Γ$ be a countable discrete group, $H$ a lcsc totally disconnected group and $ρ: Γ\rightarrow H$ a homomorphism with dense image. We develop a general and explicit technique which provides, for every compact open subgroup $L < H$ and bi-$L$-invariant probability measure $θ$ on $H$, a Furstenberg discretization $τ$ of $θ$ such that the Poisson boundary of $(H,θ)$ is a $τ$-boundary. Among other things, this technique allows us to construct examples of finitely supported random walks on certain lamplighter groups and solvable Baumslag-Solitar groups, whose Poisson boundaries are prime, but not $L^p$-irreducible for any $p \geq 1$, answering a conjecture of Bader-Muchnik in the negative. Furthermore, we give an example of a countable discrete group $Γ$ and two spread-out probability measures $τ_1$ and $τ_2$ on $Γ$ such that the boundary entropy spectrum of $(Γ,τ_1)$ is an interval, while the boundary entropy spectrum of $(Γ,τ_2)$ is a Cantor set.

Aperiodic order and spherical diffraction, I: Auto-correlation of model sets

We study uniform and non-uniform model sets in arbitrary locally compact second countable (lcsc) groups, which provide a natural generalization of uniform model sets in locally compact abelian groups as defined by Meyer and used as mathematical models of quasi-crystals. We then define a notion of auto-correlation for subsets of finite local complexitiy in arbitrary lcsc groups, which generalizes Hof's classical definition beyond the class of amenable groups, and provide a formula for the auto-correlation of a regular model set. Along the way we show that the punctured hull of an arbitrary regular model set admits a unique invariant probability measure, even in the case where the punctured hull is non-compact and the group is non-amenable. In fact this measure is also the unique stationary measure with respect to any admissible probability measure.

Product set phenomena for measured groups

Following the works of Furstenberg and Glasner on stationary means, we strengthen and extend in this paper some recent results by Di Nasso, Goldbring, Jin, Leth, Lupini and Mahlburg on piecewise syndeticity of product sets in countable \textsc{amenable} groups to general countable measured groups. We point out several fundamental differences between the behavior of products of "large" sets in Liouville and non-Liouville measured groups. As a (very) special case of our main results, we show that if $G$ is a free group of finite rank, and $A$ and $B$ are "spherically large" subsets of $G$, then there exists a finite set $F \subset G$ such that $AFB$ is thick. The position of the set $F$ is curious, but seems to be necessary; in fact, we can produce \emph{left thick} sets $A, B \subset G$ such that $B$ is "spherically large", but $AB$ is \emph{not} piecewise syndetic. On the other hand, if $A$ is spherically large, then $AA^{-1}$ is always piecewise syndetic \emph{and} left piecewise syndetic. However, contrary to what happens for amenable groups, $AA^{-1}$ may fail to be syndetic. The same phenomena occur for many other (even amenable, but non-Liouville) measured groups. Our proofs are based on some ergodic-theoretical results concerning stationary actions which should be of independent interest.

Random Walks on countable groups

We begin by giving a new proof of the equivalence between the Liouville property and vanishing of the drift for symmetric random walks with finite first moments on finitely generated groups; a result which was first established by Kaimanovich-Vershik and Karlsson-Ledrappier. We then proceed to prove that the product of the Poisson boundary of any countable measured group $(G,μ)$ with any ergodic $(G,\checkμ)$-space is still ergodic, which in particular yields a new proof of weak mixing for the double Poisson boundary of $(G,μ)$ when $μ$ is symmetric. Finally, we characterize the failure of weak-mixing for an ergodic $(G,μ)$-space as the existence of a non-trivial measure-preserving isometric factor.

Product set phenomena for countable groups

We develop in this paper general techniques to analyze local combinatorial structures in product sets of two subsets of a countable group which are "large" with respect to certain classes of (not necessarily invariant) means on the group. As applications of our methods, we extend and quantify a series of recent results by Jin, Bergelson-Furstenberg-Weiss, Beiglböck-Bergelson-Fish, Griesmer and DiNasso-Lupini to general countable groups.

Quasi-state Rigidity for Finite-dimensional Lie Algebras

We say that a Lie algebra $\gfr$ is quasi-state rigid if every Ad-invariant continuous Lie quasi-state on it is the directional derivative of a homogeneous quasimorphism. Extending work of Entov and Polterovich, we show that every reductive Lie algebra, as well as the algebras $\C^n \rtimes Ł{u}(n)$, $n \geq 1$, are rigid. On the other hand, a Lie algebra which surjects onto the three-dimensional Heisenberg algebra is not rigid. For Lie algebras of dimension $\leq 3$ and for solvable Lie algebras which split over a codimension one abelian ideal, we show that this is the only obstruction to rigidity.

Twisted patterns in large subsets of $\mathbb{Z}^N$

Let $E \subset \mathbb{Z}^N$ be a set of positive upper Banach density and let $Γ< \operatorname{GL}_N(\mathbb{Z})$ be a finitely generated, strongly irreducible subgroup whose Zariski closure in $\operatorname{GL}_N(\mathbb{R})$ is a Zariski connected semisimple group with no compact factors. Let $Y$ be any set and suppose that $Ψ: \mathbb{Z}^N \rightarrow Y$ is a $Γ$-invariant function. We prove that for every positive integer $m$, there exists a positive integer $k$ with the property that for every finite set $F \subset \mathbb{Z}^N$ with $|F| = m$, we have \[ Ψ(kF) \subset Ψ(E-b) \quad \textrm{for some $b \in E$}. \] Furthermore, if $E$ is an aperiodic Bohr$_o$-set, we can choose $k = 1$ and $b = 0$. As one of many applications of this result, we show that if $E_o \subset \mathbb{Z}$ has positive upper Banach density, then, for any integer $m$, there exists an integer $k$ with the property for \emph{every} finite set $F \subset \mathbb{Z}$, we can find $x,y,z \in E_o$ such that \[ k^2 F \subset \big\{ (u-x)^2 + (v-y)^2 - (w-z)^2 \, : \, u,v,w \in E_o \big\}. \] In particular, if $E_o \subset \mathbb{Z}$ is an aperiodic Bohr$_o$-set, then every integer can be written on the form $u^2 + v^2 - w^2$ for some $u,v,w \in E_o$. Our techniques use recent results by Benoist-Quint and Bourgain-Furman-Lindenstrauss-Mozes on equidistribution of random walks on automorphism groups of tori.

Ergodic Theorems for coset spaces

We study in this paper the validity of the mean ergodic theorem along \emph{left} Følner sequences in a countable amenable group $G$. Although the \emph{weak} ergodic theorem always holds along \emph{any} left Følner sequence in $G$, we provide examples where the \emph{mean} ergodic theorem fails in quite dramatic ways. On the other hand, if $G$ does not admit any ICC quotients, e.g. if $G$ is virtually nilpotent, then we prove that the mean ergodic theorem does indeed hold along \emph{any} left Følner sequence. In the case when a unitary representation of a countable amenable group is induced from a unitary representation of a "sufficiently thin" subgroup, we prove that the mean ergodic theorem holds along any left Følner sequence for this representation. Furthermore, we show that every countable (infinite) amenable group $L$ embeds into a countable group $G$ which admits a unitary representation with the property that for any left Følner sequence $(F_n)$ in $L$, there exists a sequence $(s_n)$ in $G$ such that the mean (but \emph{not} the weak) ergodic theorem fails for this representation along the sequence $(F_n s_n)$. Finally, we provide examples of countable (not necessarily amenable) groups $G$ with proper, infinite-index subgroups $H$, so that the \emph{pointwise} ergodic theorem holds for averages along \emph{any} strictly increasing and nested sequence of finite subsets of the coset $G/H$.

Five remarks about random walks on groups

The main aim of the present set of notes is to give new, short and essentially self-contained proofs of some classical, as well as more recent, results about random walks on groups. For instance, we shall see that the drift characterization of Liouville groups, due to Kaimanovich-Vershik and Karlsson-Ledrappier (and to Varopoulos in some important special cases) admits a very short and quite elementary proof. Furthermore, we give a new, and rather short proof of (a weak version of) an observation of Kaimanovich (as well as a small strengthening thereof) that the Poisson boundary of any symmetric measured group $(G,μ)$, is doubly ergodic, and the diagonal $G$-action on its product is ergodic with unitary coefficients. We also offer a characterization of weak mixing for ergodic $(G,μ)$-spaces parallel to the measure-preserving case. We shed some new light on Nagaev's classical technique to prove central limit theorems for random walks on groups. In the interesting special case when the measured group admits a product current, we define a Besov space structure on the space of bounded harmonic functions with respect to which the the associated convolution operator is quasicompact without any assumptions on finite exponential moments. For Gromov hyperbolic measured groups, this gives an alternative proof of the fact that every Hölder continuous function with zero integral with respect to the unique stationary probability measure on the Gromov boundary is a co-boundary. Finally, we give a new and almost self-contained proof of a special case of a recent combinatorial result about piecewise syndeticity of product sets in groups by the author and A. Fish.

Plünnecke inequalities for countable abelian groups

We establish in this paper a new form of Plünnecke-type inequalities for ergodic probability measure-preserving actions of any countable abelian group. Using a correspondence principle for product sets, this allows us to deduce lower bounds on the upper and lower Banach densities of any product set in terms of the upper Banach density of an iterated product set of one of its addends. These bounds are new already in the case of the integers. We also introduce the notion of an ergodic basis, which is parallel, but significantly weaker than the analogous notion of an additive basis, and deduce Plünnecke bounds on their impact functions with respect to both the upper and lower Banach densities on any countable abelian group.

Ergodic Theorems for Homogeneous Dilations

In this paper we prove a general ergodic theorem for ergodic and measure preserving actions of R^d on standard Borel spaces. In particular, we cover R.L. Jones ergodic theorem on spheres. Our main theorem is concerned with ergodic averages with respect to homogeneous dilations of Rajchman measures on Rd . We establish mean convergence in Hilbert spaces for general Rajchman measures, and give a criterion in terms of the Fourier dimension of the measure when almost everywhere pointwise convergence holds. Applications include averages over smooth submanifolds and polynomial curves.

Biharmonic functions on groups and limit theorems for quasimorphisms along random walks

We show for very general classes of measures on locally compact second countable groups that every Borel measurable quasimorphism is at bounded distance from a quasi-biharmonic one. This allows us to deduce non-degenerate central limit theorems and laws of the iterated logarithm for such quasimorphisms along regular random walks on topological groups using classical martingale limit theorems of Billingsley and Stout. For quasi-biharmonic quasimorphism on countable groups we also obtain integral representations using martingale convergence.

The asymptotic shape theorem for generalized first passage percolation

We generalize the asymptotic shape theorem in first passage percolation on $\mathbb{Z}^d$ to cover the case of general semimetrics. We prove a structure theorem for equivariant semimetrics on topological groups and an extended version of the maximal inequality for $\mathbb{Z}^d$-cocycles of Boivin and Derriennic in the vector-valued case. This inequality will imply a very general form of Kingman's subadditive ergodic theorem. For certain classes of generalized first passage percolation, we prove further structure theorems and provide rates of convergence for the asymptotic shape theorem. We also establish a general form of the multiplicative ergodic theorem of Karlsson and Ledrappier for cocycles with values in separable Banach spaces with the Radon--Nikodym property.
