On discrepancy, intrinsic Diophantine approximation, and spectral gaps

In the present paper we establish bounds for the size of the spectral gap for actions of algebraic groups on certain homogeneous spaces. Our approach is based on estimating operator norms of suitable averaging operators, and we develop techniques for establishing both upper and lower bounds for such norms. We shall show that this analytic problem is closely related to the arithmetic problem of establishing bounds on the discrepancy of distribution for rational points on algebraic group varieties. As an application, we show how to establish an effective bound for property $τ$ of congruence subgroups of arithmetic lattices in algebraic groups which are forms of $SL(2)$, using estimates in intrinsic Diophantine approximation which follow from Heath-Brown's analysis of rational points on 3-dimensional quadratic surfaces.

Poisson approximation and Weibull asymptotics in the geometry of numbers

Minkowski's First Theorem and Dirichlet's Approximation Theorem provide upper bounds on certain minima taken over lattice points contained in domains of Euclidean spaces. We study the distribution of such minima and show, under some technical conditions, that they exhibit Weibull asymptotics with respect to different natural measures on the space of unimodular lattices in $\bR^d$. This follows from very general Poisson approximation results for shrinking targets which should be of independent interest. Furthermore, we show in the appendix that the logarithm laws of Kleinbock-Margulis, Khinchin and Gallagher can be deduced from our distributional results.

Counting in generic lattices and higher rank actions

We consider the problem of counting lattice points contained in domains in $\mathbb{R}^d$ defined by products of linear forms and we show that the normalized discrepancies in these counting problems satisfy non-degenerate Central Limit Theorems, provided that $d \geq 9$. We also study more refined versions pertaining to "spiraling of approximations". Our techniques are dynamical in nature and exploit effective exponential mixing of all orders for actions of higher-rank abelian groups on the space of unimodular lattices.

Convergence of measures on compactifications of locally symmetric spaces

We conjecture that the set of homogeneous probability measures on the maximal Satake compactification of an arithmetic locally symmetric space $S=Γ\backslash G/K$ is compact. More precisely, given a sequence of homogeneous probability measures on $S$, we expect that any weak limit is homogeneous with support contained in precisely one of the boundary components (including $S$ itself). We introduce several tools to study this conjecture and we prove it in a number of cases, including when $G={\rm SL}_3(\mathbb{R})$ and $Γ={\rm SL}_3(\mathbb{Z})$.

Counting lattice points in norm balls on higher rank simple Lie groups

We establish an error estimate for counting lattice points in Euclidean norm balls (associated to an arbitrary irreducible linear representation) for lattices in simple Lie groups of real rank at least two. Our approach utilizes refined spectral estimates based on the existence of universal pointwise bounds for spherical functions on the groups involved. We focus particularly on the case of the special linear groups where we give a detailed proof of error estimates which constitute the first improvement of the best current bound established by Duke, Rudnick and Sarnak in 1991, and are nearly twice as good in some cases.

Simultaneous Diophantine approximation - logarithmic improvements

This paper is devoted to the study of a problem of Cassels in multiplicative Diophantine approximation which involves minimising values of a product of affine linear forms computed at integral points. It was previously known that values of this product become arbitrary close to zero, and we establish that, in fact, they approximate zero with an explicit rate. Our approach is based on investigating quantitative density of orbits of higher-rank abelian groups.

Towards a complete DMT classification of division algebra codes

This work aims at providing new bounds for the diversity multiplexing gain trade-off of a general class of division algebra based lattice codes. In the low multiplexing gain regime, some bounds were previously obtained from the high signal-to-noise ratio estimate of the union bound for the pairwise error probabilities. Here these results are extended to cover a larger range of multiplexing gains. The improvement is achieved by using ergodic theory in Lie groups to estimate the behavior of the sum arising from the union bound. In particular, the new bounds for lattice codes derived from Q-central division algebras suggest that these codes can be divided into two subclasses based on their Hasse invariants at the infinite places. Algebras with ramification at the infinite place seem to provide better diversity-multiplexing gain tradeoff.

Diophantine approximation exponents on homogeneous varieties

Recent years have seen very important developments at the interface of Diophantine approximation and homogeneous dynamics. In the first part of the paper we give a brief exposition of a dictionary developed by Dani and Kleinbock-Margulis which relates Diophantine properties of vectors to distribution of orbits of flows on the space of unimodular lattices. In the second part of the paper we briefly describe an extension of this dictionary recently developed by the authors, which establishes an analogous dynamical correspondence for general lattice orbits on homogeneous spaces. We concentrate specifically on the problem of estimating exponents of Diophantine approximation by arithmetic lattices acting on algebraic varieties. In the third part of the paper, we exemplify our results by establishing explicit bounds for the Diophantine exponent of dense lattice orbits in a number of basic cases. These include the linear and affine actions on affine spaces, and the action on the variety of matrices of fixed determinant. In some cases, these exponents are shown to be best possible.

Counting orbits of integral points in families of affine homogeneous varieties and diagonal flows

In this paper, we study the distribution of integral points on parametric families of affine homogeneous varieties. By the work of Borel and Harish-Chandra, the set of integral points on each such variety consists of finitely many orbits of arithmetic groups, and we establish an asymptotic formula (on average) for the number of the orbits indexed by their Siegel weights. In particular, we deduce asymptotic formulas for the number of inequivalent integral representations by decomposable forms and by norm forms in division algebras, and for the weighted number of equivalence classes of integral points on sections of quadratic surfaces. Our arguments use the exponential mixing property of diagonal flows on homogeneous spaces.

Ergodic theory and the duality principle on homogeneous spaces

We prove mean and pointwise ergodic theorems for the action of a discrete lattice subgroup in a connected algebraic Lie group, on infinite volume homogeneous algebraic varieties. Under suitable necessary conditions, our results are quantitative, namely we establish rates of convergence in the mean and pointwise ergodic theorems, which can be estimated explicitly. Our results give a precise and in most cases optimal quantitative form to the duality principle governing dynamics on homogeneous spaces. We illustrate their scope in a variety of equidistribution problems.

Exponential Mixing of Nilmanifold Automorphisms

We study dynamical properties of automorphisms of compact nilmanifolds and prove that every ergodic automorphism is exponentially mixing and exponentially mixing of higher orders. This allows to establish probabilistic limit theorems and regularity of solutions of the cohomological equation for such automorphisms. Our method is based on the quantitative equidistribution results for polynomial maps combined with Diophantine estimates.

Metric Diophantine approximation on homogeneous varieties

We develop the metric theory of Diophantine approximation on homogeneous varieties of semisimple algebraic groups and prove results analogous to the classical Khinchin and Jarnik theorems. In full generality our results establish simultaneous Diophantine approximation with respect to several completions, and Diophantine approximation over general number fields using S-algebraic integers. In several important examples, the metric results we obtain are optimal. The proof uses quantitative equidistribution properties of suitable averaging operators, which are derived from spectral bounds in automorphic representations.

Diophantine approximation and automorphic spectrum

The present paper establishes qunatitative estimates on the rate of diophantine approximation in homogeneous varieties of semisimple algebraic groups. The estimates established generalize and improve previous ones, and are sharp in a number of cases. We show that the rate of diophantine approximation is controlled by the spectrum of the automorphic representation, and is thus subject to the generalised Ramanujan conjectures.

On Arnold's and Kazhdan's equidistribution problems

We consider isometric actions of lattices in semisimple algebraic groups on (possibly non-compact) homogeneous spaces with (possibly infinite) invariant Radon measure. We assume that the action has a dense orbit, and demonstrate two novel and non-classical dynamical phenomena that arise in this context. The first is the existence of a mean ergodic theorem even when the invariant measure is infinite, which implies the existence of an associated limiting distribution, possibly different than the invariant measure. The second is uniform quantitative equidistribution of all orbits in the space, which follows from a quantitative mean ergodic theorem for such actions. In turn, these results imply quantitative ratio ergodic theorems for isometric actions of lattices. This sheds some unexpected light on certain equidistribution problems posed by Arnol'd and also on the equidistribution conjecture for dense subgroups of isometries formulated by Kazhdan. We briefly describe the general problem regarding ergodic theorems for actions of lattices on homogeneous spaces and its solution via the duality principle \cite{GN2}, and give a number of examples to demonstrate our results. Finally, we also prove results on quantitative equidistribution for transitive actions.

Distribution of lattice orbits on homogeneous varieties

Given a lattice Γin a locally compact group G and a closed subgroup H of G, one has a natural action of Γon the homogeneous space V=H\G. For an increasing family of finite subsets {Γ_T: T>0}, a dense orbit vΓ, v\in V, and compactly supported function ϕon V, we consider the sums S_{ϕ,v}(T)=\sum_{γ\in Γ_T} ϕ(v γ). Understanding the asymptotic behavior of S_{ϕ,v}(T) is a delicate problem which has only been considered for certain very special choices of H, G and {Γ_T}. We develop a general abstract approach to the problem, and apply it to the case when G is a Lie group and either H or G is semisimple. When G is a group of matrices equipped with a norm, we have S_{ϕ,v}(T) \sim \int_{G_T} ϕ(vg) dg, where G_T={g\in G:||g||<T} and Γ_T = G_T \cap Γ. We also show that the asymptotics of S_{ϕ,v}(T) is governed by \int_V ϕdν, where νis an explicit limiting density depending on the choice of v and the norm.
