Optimal Hardy Inequality for Fractional Laplacians on the Lattice

We study the fractional Hardy inequality on the integer lattice. We prove null-criticality of the Hardy weight and hence optimality of the constant. More specifically, we present a family of Hardy weights with respect to a parameter and show that below a certain threshold the Hardy weight is positive critical while above the threshold it is subcritical. In particular, the Hardy weight at the threshold is optimal in the sense that any larger weight would fail to be a Hardy weight and the Hardy inequality does not allow for a minimizer. A crucial ingredient in our proof is an asymptotic expansion of the fractional discrete Riesz kernel.

Aperiodic order and spherical diffraction, II: Translation bounded measures on homogeneous spaces

We study the auto-correlation measures of invariant random point processes in the hyperbolic plane which arise from various classes of aperiodic Delone sets. More generally, we study auto-correlation measures for large classes of Delone sets in (and even translation bounded measures on) arbitrary locally compact homogeneous metric spaces. We then specialize to the case of weighted model sets, in which we are able to derive more concrete formulas for the auto-correlation. In the case of Riemannian symmetric spaces we also explain how the auto-correlation of a weighted model set in a Riemannian symmetric space can be identified with a (typically non-tempered) positive-definite distribution on $\mathbb R^n$. This paves the way for a diffraction theory for such model sets, which will be discussed in the sequel to the present article.

Aperiodic order and spherical diffraction, III: The shadow transform and the diffraction formula

We define spherical diffraction measures for a wide class of weighted point sets in commutative spaces, i.e. proper homogeneous spaces associated with Gelfand pairs. In the case of the hyperbolic plane we can interpret the spherical diffraction measure as the Mellin transform of the auto-correlation distribution. We show that uniform regular model sets in commutative spaces have a pure point spherical diffraction measure. The atoms of this measure are located at the spherical automorphic spectrum of the underlying lattice, and the diffraction coefficients can be characterized abstractly in terms of the so-called shadow transform of the characteristic functions of the window. In the case of the Heisenberg group we can give explicit formulas for these diffraction coefficients in terms of Bessel and Laguerre functions.

From Hardy to Rellich inequalities on graphs

We show how to deduce Rellich inequalities from Hardy inequalities on infinite graphs. Specifically, the obtained Rellich inequality gives an upper bound on a function by the Laplacian of the function in terms of weighted norms. These weights involve the Hardy weight and a function which satisfies an eikonal inequality. The results are proven first for Laplacians and are extended to Schrödinger operators afterwards.

Aperiodic order and spherical diffraction, I: Auto-correlation of model sets

We study uniform and non-uniform model sets in arbitrary locally compact second countable (lcsc) groups, which provide a natural generalization of uniform model sets in locally compact abelian groups as defined by Meyer and used as mathematical models of quasi-crystals. We then define a notion of auto-correlation for subsets of finite local complexitiy in arbitrary lcsc groups, which generalizes Hof's classical definition beyond the class of amenable groups, and provide a formula for the auto-correlation of a regular model set. Along the way we show that the punctured hull of an arbitrary regular model set admits a unique invariant probability measure, even in the case where the punctured hull is non-compact and the group is non-amenable. In fact this measure is also the unique stationary measure with respect to any admissible probability measure.

Convergence theorems for graph sequences

In this paper, we deal with a notion of Banach space-valued mappings defined on a set consisting of finite graphs with uniformly bounded vertex degree. These functions will be endowed with certain boundedness and additivity criteria. We examine their normalized long-term behaviour along a particular class of graph sequences. Using techniques developed by Elek, we show convergence in the topology of the Banach space if the corresponding graph sequence possesses a hyperfinite structure. These considerations extend and complement the corresponding results for amenable groups. As an application, we verify the uniform approximation of the integrated density of states for bounded, finite range operators on discrete structures. Further, we extend results concerning an abstract version of Fekete's Lemma for amenable groups and cancellative semigroups to the geometric situation of convergent graph sequences.

Geometry and spectrum of rapidly branching graphs

We study graphs whose vertex degree tends and which are, therefore, called rapidly branching. We prove spectral estimates, discreteness of spectrum, first order eigenvalue and Weyl asymptotics solely in terms of the vertex degree growth. The underlying techniques are estimates on the isoperimetric constant. Furthermore, we give lower volume growth bounds and we provide a new criterion for stochastic incompleteness.

Sectional curvature of polygonal complexes with planar substructures

In this paper we introduce a class of polygonal complexes for which we can define a notion of sectional combinatorial curvature. These complexes can be viewed as generalizations of 2-dimensional Euclidean and hyperbolic buildings. We focus on the case of non-positive and negative combinatorial curvature. As geometric results we obtain a Hadamard-Cartan type theorem, thinness of bigons, Gromov hyperbolicity and estimates for the Cheeger constant. We employ the latter to get spectral estimates, show discreteness of the spectrum in the sense of a Donnelly-Li type theorem and present corresponding eigenvalue asymptotics. Moreover, we prove a unique continuation theorem for eigenfunctions and the solvability of the Dirichlet problem at infinity.

Uniform existence of the integrated density of states on metric Cayley graphs

Given a finitely generated amenable group we consider ergodic random Schrödinger operators on a Cayley graph with random potentials and random boundary conditions. We show that the normalised eigenvalue counting functions of finite volume parts converge uniformly. The integrated density of states as the limit can be expressed by a Pastur-Shubin formula. The spectrum supports the corresponding measure and discontinuities correspond to the existence of compactly supported eigenfunctions.

A Banach space-valued ergodic theorem for amenable groups and applications

In this paper we study unimodular amenable groups. The first part is devoted to results on the existence of uniform families of epsilon-quasi tilings for these groups. In this context, constructions of Ornstein and Weiss are extended by quantitative estimates for the covering properties of the corresponding decompositions. Afterwards, we apply the developed methods to obtain an abstract ergodic theorem for a class of functions mapping subsets of a countable, amenable group into some Banach space. This significantly extends and complements the previous results of Lenz, Müller, Schwarzenberger and Veselić. Further, using the Lindenstrauss ergodic theorem, we describe a link of our results to classical ergodic theory. We conclude with two important applications: the uniform approximation of the integrated density of states on amenable Cayley graphs, as well as the almost-sure convergence of cluster densities in an amenable bond percolation model.

Spectrum of Lebesgue measure zero for Jacobi matrices of quasicrystals

We study one-dimensional random Jacobi operators corresponding to strictly ergodic dynamical systems. In this context, we characterize the spectrum of these operators by non-uniformity of the transfer matrices and the set where the Lyapunov exponent vanishes. Adapting this result to subshifts satisfying the so-called Boshernitzan condition, it turns out that the spectrum is supported on a Cantor set with Lebesgue measure zero. This generalizes earlier results for Schrödinger operators.
